Comedy Part 496: McChatty

Location: McDill's
Emcee: Bruce Veach
After: Bruce Veach
Before: Andrew Hagan

Our loyal(?) audience nearly bailed on us to corral a stray dog...yay Collinsville? Thankfully, we did have a decent group of onlookers for our performances. The people in attendance were a bit talkative...I'm not really good at dealing with that, but I considered it good practice in hindsight. Tried to use different material than I used the previous week...I finally have a few new ideas for bits but I still need to write them out. I'd like to do the Bethalto shows more often, but I'm also trying to balance my expenses and gas prices are still high...

-Brie Bella d. Natalya Neidhart after Nikki Bella distracted Nattie with a duck-call whistle(see, she's an "ugly duckling"), leading to Brie getting the rollup pin.
-Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel(w/ Paul Heyman) vs. "R-Truth" Ron Killings ended in a no-contest when C.M. Punk ran out to attack Axel and Heyman.
-WWE Champion John Cena d. Ryback in a table match(non-title) after an F-U through a table in the corner.  Daniel Bryan came out to get a good look at the belt, then played a brief game of keep-away with it until Cena grabbed it back.

FIST Combat Special Comment

Rare weekend with a wrestling show on Friday and no wrestling show on Saturday...next weekend will be open for me, so might as well get to it.

The St. Louis wrestling scene was in the media spotlight for an unfortunate reason this past week...I saw a news van at Pop's on Friday and it sounds like the reporters tried to interview some people about "The Future" Donovan Ruddick. While I did know him, others around here knew him better and I don't know if I'm qualified to speak on the situation. I knew him as a good guy and that was my main experience with him. Something similar happened with a WGNU talk show host who I once worked with...we were cool and we talked a lot about wrestling off the air. It's a shock when you know someone like that and then hear news like this.

I don't know when the next FIST Combat show will be...promoter Mike Gordon has been busy with his other ventures(particularly his Beach Bum Alcoholics band). Attendance was a bit down from the previous show but the fans were still energetic.

Billy McNeil won the tournament at the previous show and was retroactively named the FIST Combat Champion(though they don't have a belt yet). The setup for this show was another tournament with the winner to challenge Billy in the main event.

The tourney matches were shuffled a bit as the scheduled first-round matches were Ricky Cruz vs. Dave Vaughn and Dash Rando vs. Jonathan Gresham. It was changed to Cruz-Gresham and Rando-Vaughn. Tracey Smothers was originally advertised for the show but was quietly taken off the show listing.

The Juggalo-inspired Local Kingz attacked Poodoo The Cow & Dash Rando at the previous show...they were thrown out of the building and vowed to make another impact on this night. They attacked Poodoo at ringside during the Vaughn-Rando opener and then busted up the tag match between the Bumrush Brothers and the Hooligans. Not sure where this is leading unless some of them are training to wrestle...

The in-ring content was solid across the board, as expected from the people on the show.

Vaughn may have caught a break with the match change as his past luck against Cruz hasn't been the best. Travis Cook was conspicuous by his absence.

I honestly hadn't seen much of Gresham before this. He was usually in tag or schmozz matches at previous shows I attended. The size difference between him and Ricky was...very noticable, but they had a good match. Gresham did get up after the finisher and pin a bit quickly...just saying.

Dirden made ground beef out of Poodoo...bad night for Team Bizarro(even with the addition of C.J. McManus at ringside).

Some LWA Superfans were in the house for the rematch between Adam Raw and Alexandre Rudolph. Another good power battle ended with Rudolph evening the score between the two.

Really liked the tag match; the Hooligans worked heel which was a switch from other recent times I've seen them. Sounds like it won't be the last battle between them and the Bumrush Bros....I do not have a problem with that.

The four-corner match was set up with one face and three heels, but recent tag partners Dirden and Rudolph locked horns a few times(including the finish). Thought the match went well; any sort of multi-way schmozz can be tricky to execute with a good flow. Rudolph abused referee Jay King after the match...and then King had to officiate the main event so he had a long night.

EDIT: I forgot to mention something that happened during Rudolph's entrance for the four-corner bout...he got into an argument with Jake Parnell(who was attending the show as a fan) and slugged him. Between that and the Juggalo involvement, the audience doesn't seem to be a safe area at these shows...

The main event played out normally though Dirden had been in two prior matches while McNeil was fresh. McNeil escaped the Asiatic Spike setup but fell to the chokeslam...and stayed down well after the pin. Now that's how to sell a finisher.

Anywho, next weekend is clear. The rest of August looks like this:

Friday 8/9: SLA in Alton, IL
Saturday 8/10: SICW in Sauget, IL at GCS Stadium (MMWA is in St. Louis that night as well)
Saturday 8/17: SICW in East Carondelet, IL
Saturday 8/31: CSCW in Cahokia, IL

As always: #yaywrestling

Anarchy Wrestling TV #390

-Commentators:  Bret Wolverton & Andrew Pendleton III.
-Sammy Guevara won a triple threat match with William "The Hammer" Roberts and Kharn Alexander; Roberts hit Alexander with a Meltdown, but Guevara low-bridged Roberts out of the ring and then pinned Alexander for the win.
-Tag Team Champions The Washington Bullets(Jon & Trey Williams) wondered aloud about Najasism's absence...that led to The Vandal trying to get some payback and getting BELTed by the Bullets.
-B.J. Hancock & Joey Rhymer won a four-way dance with Hot Commodity(Young Lions' Champion C.B. Suave & Tommy Penirelli)(w/ Charlie Cash), Kevin Blue & Brandon Parker, & The Movement(Najasism & The Vandal)(w/o Najasism as noted above).  Penirelli immediately pinned Vandal for the first elimination after the Bullets' pre-match assault.  After the other two teams beat each other up for a few minutes, Penirelli tagged himself in on Hancock and hit Parker with a fisherman buster for the second elimination.  Rhymer small-packaged Penirelli to counter another fisherman buster and Suave turned the move over behind the ref's back, but Hancock turned it back over as the ref was with Suave...the referee turned around to make the three-count for Rhymer's win.
-Match 3 Of Best-Of-5 Series(Henry leading 2-0):  Seth Delay d. Anthony Henry(w/ Miss Rachel) via grapevine anklelock.
-John Skyler d. Steven Walters; Skyler nearly won at one point after countering a rana with a powerbomb and putting his feet on the ropes, but promoter Franklin Dove pushed his feet off the ropes.  As the referee was occupied with Dove, Skyler hit Walters with a low blow and rolled him up for the cheap win.

Weekend wrestling

ROH TV

Commentators:  Kevin Kelly & Steve Corino.

The American Wolves(Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards) d. Mike Sydal & Zizou Middoux when Richards pinned Middoux after a double-stomp off the top rope.

Michael Elgin, Kevin Steen, Jay Lethal, & B.J. Whitmer d. Rhino, Jimmy Jacobs, Rhett Titus, & Cliff Compton in Steel Cage Warfare.  Whitmer and Jacobs started the bout, then the next few entries were Titus, Elgin, and Compton(who threw powder in Elgin's eyes).  Elgin was zip-tied to the top rope by the SCUM team, then Titus pinned Whitmer after a spike piledriver with Compton.  Lethal entered with chair in hand and put it to good use before cutting Elgin free.

Rhino entered and Gored Elgin, but then Gored Titus by mistake and Lethal pinned Rhino after the Injection(back-handspring Cutter).  Kevin Steen was the last entrant but Matt Hardy attacked him in the aisleway, leading to the fight spilling out of the open cage door.  Lethal pinned Titus after another Injection.  Jacobs hit Jay with a chair and then speared him through a table, leading to Compton pinning Lethal.

Elgin pinned Compton after a sitout superbomb, but Corino left the broadcast table and FIREBALL~!ed Elgin so that Jacobs could eliminate him.  Hardy entered with a Twist Of Fate on Steen and Corino brought out lighter fluid(even Jacobs objected to that)...so Nigel McGuinness entered the cage and took out Corino with a lariat.  Steen saved Nigel from a Twist Of Fate and hit Hardy with the package piledriver, then Nigel threw Jacobs to him for another package piledriver and the final eimination.  Steen and Nigel shook hands(as Adam Cole watched from the aisleway)...

SICW Wrestling Explosion

-Commentator:  Larry Matysik.
-Flashback to May 1979:  David & Fritz Von Erich(w/ Kevin) won a mini-gauntlet match against Harley Race.  Race went for a diving headbutt off the second rope, but David caught him in the iron claw(leaving Race bloody) and the referee called the submission after three arm drops.

NXT + Impact

WWE NXT

Commentators:  Tom Phillips & Brad Maddox.  Ring announcer:  Byron Saxton.

We start with comments from our two participants in the Women's Title bout...Paige sums it up by saying that she's the "fighter" and Emma's the "dancer".

Paige Knight vs. Emma Tayla, Women's Title Tournament Final:  Paige defeated Tamina Snuka and Alicia Fox to get here; Emma beat Aksana Raudoniene in the first round and upset Summer Rae in the semifinals.  The fan support is split here with a SLIGHT edge to Paige...YAY WRESTLING~!  Neither lady holds a sustained advantage for long, but Emma pulls out a nice escape from a backslide setup and gets Paige in the Tarantula in the same motion!  Paige responds by kicking Emma out of the ring, turning the aggression up a notch...

Brad exaggerates a bit on Paige's debut age though the truth is still impressive(age 13).  NOW YOU'RE GONNA SEE A PERFECTPLEX~! but Paige only gets two.  Emma turns things around with a well-timed hair-yank, then hits the low cross-body with Paige slumped in the corner...getting a two-count on the pin attempt.  Paige's sunset flip is blocked by Emma for two, but Paige completes the move for two.  Emma slows the pace a bit but Paige backs her into the corner, then elbows her repeatedly before taking her down into a half-crab!  Emma's a long way from the ropes but kicks Paige away, then gets a small package...for two.  Emma takes her down for an attempted Dil-Emma(inverted STF), but Paige gets to the ropes and knees her in the face.  Paige goes to the top rope but Emma cuts her off...superplex!  The fans note that This Is Awesome(tm)...Emma's slow to cover and Paige barely gets a foot on the bottom rope!  Paige gets off a couple of side-kicks to the midsection...then hits the Paige Turner out of nowhere and that's it!  We have a NEWWWWW NXT Women's Champion!

Several of the women enter to congratulate Paige...hey, Rosa Mendes sighting!  We even get a visit from Triple H to raise Paige's hand...well done.

Zeb Colter(w/ Antonio Cesaro) enlightens us with the Don't Tread On Me flag in the background.  Zeb notes that they did a background check on Sami Zayn and couldn't find anything...he also notes that Zayn once wore a mask, so that means he probably snuck into the country across the Mexican border(OLE~!).  They threaten deportation...okay then.

Angelo Dawkins(already in the ring) vs. Tyler Breeze(fka Mike Dalton):  Dawkins is making his NXT TV debut and I don't like his chances.  Breeze has his camera phone out and takes "selfies" all the way to the ring...he makes his seasonal residence in Milan, Italy.  On top of that, those boots are ridiculous...and he's STILL taking selfies.  He's rudely interrupted by the opening bell...oh yeah, wrestling match!  Dawkins finally takes it upon himself to go on the attack...but Breeze turns the tide in a hurry.  Angelo gets a rollup for two and O'Connor Roll for two, but Breeze puts the boots to him in response...before going back to his camera phone to check his hair.  Satisfied that his good looks haven't been compromised, Breeze takes out Dawkins with one big spinning heel kick and that's the ballgame.  Back to the camera phone for more selfies on the way out...can't fault him for lack of dedication.

Aiden English & Mickey Keegan vs. The Ascension(Conor O'Brian & Rick Victor):  Let's try this Ascension tag team thing again!  English & Keegan actually get an entrance and that's the high point of this segment for them.  Keegan never tags into the match as Aiden takes the entire beating.  English takes a double-hiptoss-into-a-powerbomb, then a new version of Total Elimination with O'Brian legsweeping English as Victor hits him from the front with a flying European uppercut.  That puts him out of his misery as Victor gets the three-count...

Sheamus O'Shaunessy vs. Luke Harper(w/ Bray Wyatt & Erick Rowan):  Don't expect too many flying headscissors in this one, to quote Gorilla Monsoon.  Sheamus stopped Wyatt from interfering in last week's main event, leading to Harper & Rowan losing the Tag Team Titles to Corey Graves & Adrian Neville.  Big ol' lockup to start...Brad notes his own in-ring experience against Sheamus(though he claims to have had "flu-like symptoms" that night).  Not a lot of technical grappling here...just two big guys beating the hell out of each other.  Rowan gets involved and takes a clubbing too, but Harper elbows Sheamus out of the ring where Rowan lies in wait with a cheapshot.

Harper dominates the action for a few minutes(with Rowan adding his two cents from the arena floor)...but Sheamus surprises him with a tilt-a-whirl slam.  I smell a rally...the slugfest resumes with Sheamus getting the upper hand, but Harper escapes a Regal Roll to hit the sitout Bossman Slam for two.  Harper misses a splash off the second rope and Sheamus hits the Regal Roll this time...for two.  Harper cuts off a top-rope move and then avoids the Brogue Kick before nailing the discus lariat...for 2 1/2!  Corner clothesline hits, but Sheamus boots Harper in the mush before running him into Rowan...White Noise hits!  Brogue Kick follows and that'll do it!  Bray Wyatt is oddly amused by this turn of events...

Next week:  NXT Champion Bo Dallas & Sami Zayn vs. Antonio Cesaro & Leo Kruger.

TNA Impact

-Commentators:  Mike Tenay & Jeremy Borash.
-Manik won an Ultimate X Match with Sonjay Dutt and Greg Marasciulo to win the vacant X-Division Title, retrieving the belt from above the ring.
-Bound For Glory Series:  Ken Anderson d. Shawn Hernandez after the Mic Check.
-Mickie James d. Gail Kim to retain the Women's Title as Gail was arguing with referee O.D.B.  Velvet Sky watched the match from ringside.
-Bound For Glory Series:  Christopher Daniels d. Samoa Joe; a distraction by Ken Anderson allowed Daniels to clip the knee, then hit the Best Moonsault Ever twice in a row for the pin.
-Bound For Glory Series:  A.J. Styles d. Jeff Hardy via Calf Killer submission.

SICW Special Comment

Not much to say about this show, honestly...it was a good event. It ran a bit longer than usual but that wasn't too big of a deal.

Props to Drew Abbenhaus for his ring announcing debut...nicely done. Ben Simon was filling in on camera duty with the usual operator absent.

The turnout was a bit lower than the previous month's standing-room-only crowd; there was a picnic in Dupo that evening which may have been a factor.

Bobby D's DQ win over Alexandre Rudolph was a slight surprise, but Bobby's been on a pretty good run of success lately.

Heath Hatton and Ax Allwardt have faced each other in Pro Wrestling Collision so I figured they'd work well together. Good heel work as the referee stopped Ax from using a chain as a weapon, so he pulled out a smaller chain to hit Hatton behind the official's back.

As expected, quite a few people weren't happy with how Ken Kasa won the Classic Title...including people like Ron Powers and Flash Flanagan who felt like they should have had the title shot instead.

Joker made his SICW debut against Waco...it was a fairly quick bout with Waco Cheating To Win(tm).

I thought I had heard Gary Jackson vs. The Big Texan would be on the card, but it was Jackson vs. Jake Parnell instead. I've liked Parnell's heel work so far.

Dave Vaughn can finish with a few different moves these days...the spear may not look as effective against larger opponents like Adam Raw. It took two spears to put Raw down for the count...it was the longest match of the night up to that point.

The building marquee was delightfully straightforward: "WRESTLING THIS SAT MIDGETS". :-D They got more ring time than anyone up to that point...I guess you couldn't exactly cut them short. *ducks thrown objects* In all seriousness, it was an entertaining match...Beautiful Bobby Dean and Little Kato are veterans and have been wrestling each other for a long time now. It seemed like they couldn't decide who the heel would be, but the fans enjoyed the bout nonetheless...they also sold a lot of merchandise during the second intermission.

Solid tag match with Cruz & Hargas against Powers & Flanagan...gotta consider Hargas among the contenders to Kasa's title.

Fine main event...outside distraction led to Kasa getting the flash pin to retain his title. Good setup for the GCS Stadium shows...either Herb or Travis will be getting an unwanted haircut!

FIST Combat on Friday, nothing on Saturday...will have to check up on the August schedule.

Comedy Part 495: Comedy Shenanigans

Location: Shenanigans
Emcee: Me
Lineup: Joe "The Animal" Lancey, Jim "The Dad" Keith, Andrew Hagan, Hoppy, Landon Meyer, Greg McClintock

Had a good time at the first Shenanigans outing even though my set didn't go that well. It just reinforced to me that I need to write new material...I don't pay much attention to current events and that might help me in that regard. I push my shows all the time, but it seems like no one I know is able to attend...it can be frustrating, to be honest. Oh well...we'll see what happens next week.

-Sheamus O'Shaunessy d. Jack Swagger(w/ Zeb Colter) via Brogue Kick.
-Sin Cara d. Drew McIntyre(w/ Heath Slater & Jinder Mahal) after hitting a Frankensteiner while Drew was on his knees, spiking Drew's head to the mat.
-Damien Sandow d. Justin Gabriel after a full nelson slam.

TNA XPlosion

-Commentators:  Mike Tenay & Jeremy Borash.
-Joseph Park d. Brother Devon after the splash off the second rope.

Comedy Part 494: 15 Minutes?

Location: McDill's
Emcee: Bruce Veach
After: Bruce Veach
Before: Joe "The Animal" Lancey

With four comics on the show(Bruce, myself, Joe, and Andrew Hagan), Bruce asked if we could do longer sets...sure, why not? That was probably as long of a comedy set as I've ever done...my previous mark was around twelve minutes and Andrew said I did about fifteen. Good to know I'm still capable of an extended set...don't even think I used my notes very often. Pretty good audience too, been liking this venue so far. Onward to Shenanigans in Belleville!

Comedy Part 493: Stryke Three

Location: Strykrz
Emcee: Me
Lineup: Hoppy, Joe "The Animal" Lancey, Greg McClintock, Bruce Veach

The Bethalto shows seem to have developed a regular audience...good to see. I just wish this wasn't my longest drive out of the four new Illinois shows. I did my best to mix up my material...I have enough jokes for that, but I also had a few topical lines to try out. A good time was had...don't know if I'll do this show on a regular basis, but it's good a good enough crowd to be worth attending. I've done my best to alert Illinois comics about the new options available to them...hope to see some people get back into the game.

-Billy Buck d. T.V. Champion Bobby Moore(w/ Charlie Cash) by DQ; Buck hit the Buck Wild superkick and had the win, but Cash pulled the referee out of the ring to get Moore disqualified and save the title.  Buck went after Cash but Moore leveled him with his possibly-loaded forearm pad.
-Gauntlet Match(Heavyweight Champion Jeremy Vain did commentary):  Azrael d. Alexander James with the Green Manalishi With The Two-Pronged Crown(modified Michinoku Driver).  Se7en(w/ Jeff G. Bailey) d. Azrael after his chokeslam/spinebuster finisher.  Shadow Jackson fought Se7en(w/ Bailey) to a five-minute draw (meaning both men were eliminated).  Slim J d. Jagged Edge(w/ Bailey) when Jeff G.'s interference backfired, allowing Slim J to get the rollup pin; Jagged Edge took out Slim J with a running powerslam after the fall.  Geter d. Slim J via big splash.  Geter d. Shaun Tempers(w/ Bailey) as the other gauntlet participants fought at ringside; Slim J confronted Bailey and that distracted Tempers from delivering his Rude Awakening finisher.  Geter took advantage with a belly-to-belly suplex for the final fall.

-Roderick Strong d. Adam Cole by DQ; the referee was bumped and Corino left the broadcast table to throw a chain into the ring.  Strong got the chain but Cole got it away from him, then hit Strong with it...but the ref saw that and called for the disqualification.  (Cole didn't see Corino throw the chain into the ring; he only saw Strong with the chain and felt he was defending himself.)
-Jay Briscoe d. Matt Hardy(w/ Steve Corino) to retain the Heavyweight Title; Jay survived multiple Twists Of Fate and countered the final attempt with a small package for the flash pin.  Rhino Gored Jay afterwards; Mark made the save only to be hit in the head by Corino with a roll of coins.  This triggered a brawl between SCUM members and Team ROH(Michael Elgin, Jay Lethal, & B.J. Whitmer); SCUM got the better of it as the good guys got zip-tied to the corners and Rhino gave Mark several solo Conchairtos in a row.  The locker room finally emptied to settle things down, but Hardy Pillmanized Jay's injured shoulder with the chair.
-Next week:  Steel Cage Warfare.

-Ken Kasa(w/ Travis Cook & Dave Vaughn) d. Chaz Wesson to retain the Classic Title; after distractions by Vaughn & Cook, Kasa was able to counter a Pedigree attempt into a jackknife cradle for the flash pin.  Travis got out the hair trimmers but promoter Herb Simmons passed Wesson a chair and Commissioner Keith Smith hit the ring with his own chair to hold off the Travis Cook Organization.

TNA XPlosion

-Chavo Guerrero Jr. d. Kenny King with the frog splash.

WWE NXT

Commentators:  Tony Dawson & S. William Regal.  Ring announcer:  Kendall Skye.

Sami Zayn(OLE~!) vs. Leo Kruger vs. Antonio Cesaro:  Winner gets the next NXT Title shot at Bo Dallas.  It doesn't take long for Zayn and Cesaro to renew their rivalry but Zayn cleans house against both opponents.  Leo reinserts himself with a hammerlock snap suplex on Zayn...Antonio drags Kruger to the floor so Sami joins them with a huge somersault plancha!

Zayn tries to follow up with a top-rope move but Cesaro catches him in a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker...then Kruger picks a fight with Antonio.  Leo tries a high-cradle Tazplex on Zayn but Cesaro German-suplexes Kruger, throwing both men at once!  A deadlift gutwrench sends Kruger out of the ring, then Cesaro grabs Zayn in his version of the chinlock.  Leo re-enters to break up a Neutralizer with a lariat to the back of the head, then covers Zayn...for two.  Zayn fights back with a move that DDTs Leo and Flatliners Antonio at the same time...nice.  Time for El Big Comeback...Zayn gets Kruger with an O'Connor Roll for two.  The kickout sends him into Antonio and he executes a high-altitude rana...for two.  Sami throws Leo to the floor but runs into a big EUROUPPERCUT from Cesaro...Antonio hits the Neutralizer, but Kruger re-enters to toss Cesaro out of the ring and steals the pin on Zayn!

NXT Champion Bo Dallas vs. Scott Dawson(w/ Sylvester Lefort), non-title:  Seems like Bo's still a face despite his recent attitude shift and the traditional fan response to him.  Dallas wins a good quick bout with the snap belly-to-belly suplex, but Kruger jumps him after the bell and plants him with the corkscrew snapmare driver.

Charlotte Flair(w/ Ric Flair) vs. Bayley Rose:  This is the TV debut of Ric's daughter...no pressure!  She has a background in gymnastics, we are told.  Charlotte gets a unique bridging rollup for two, then Bayley comes back with a jackknife cradle for two, backslide for two, and Oklahoma roll for two.  YAY WRESTLING~!  Charlotte pulls out a classic Flair Flip before ramming Bayley into the turnbuckle, then somersaults into a Diamond Cutter as Bayley's down on all fours!  That'll do it and Charlotte makes a successful debut!  Stereo struts~!

Backstage, Tony Dawson interviews the visiting Sheamus O'Shaunessy...he's wrestling next week, but this week he gets jumped by the Wyatt Family!  Bray informs us to Follow The Buzzards(tm)...

Introducing:  Tyler Breeze(fka Mike Dalton).  He makes his (re-)debut next week.

The Wyatt Family(Luke Harper & Erick Rowan)(w/ Bray Wyatt) vs. Corey Graves & Adrian Neville for the Tag Team Titles:  Graves & Kassius Ohno earned a title shot, but Ohno was injured by the Family so Neville is taking his place.  The challengers control the early pace, but IT'S THE BIG FOOT by Harper puts Graves on his back.

The champs isolate Graves for a while...Corey surprises Harper with a sunset flip, but Luke gets off his back in a hurry and hits a dropkick(!).  Graves won't stop fighting but he runs into a sitout Bossman Slam by Harper...for two!  Luke lines up for IT'S THE BIG FOOT again but misses this time and hangs himself up on the ropes...tags on both sides!  Neville's a house afire!  A roundhouse kick from the apron fells Rowan, then Harper tries to intervene from the floor only to take a flying rana off the apron!  Wyatt's stopped rocking...Adrian low-bridges Rowan, then nails both heels with a huge springboard moonsault to the floor!  Neville throws Rowan back into the ring and nails a second-rope Phoenix Splash(!)...Harper breaks up the pin!  Third floor again, but this time Bray nails Adrian behind the ref's back and Rowan covers...for 2 1/2!  Enter Sheamus...he rushes Wyatt and runs him into the steel ring steps!  Graves takes down Rowan with a leg dive, then Neville goes topside and hits the Red Arrow(corkscrew shooting star press) for NEWWWWW Tag Team Champions!

Next week:  Paige Knight vs. Emma Tayla to crown the first NXT Women's Champion, plus Sheamus vs. Luke Harper and the debut of Tyler Breeze.

Comedy Part 492: McComedy

Location:  McDill's
Emcee:  Bruce Veach
After:  Bruce Veach
Before:  Andrew Hagan

The new weekly comedy cavalcade rolls on.  After the shows in Bethalto and O'Fallon, IL, I ventured to Collinsville for tonight's show.  Along with Bruce and Andrew, Joe The Animal and Ron Finger performed for a handful of onlookers.  They seemed to have a good time and wanted to come back for the next show, so that's a bonus.  I did a standard set, still trying to get the jokes back to the front of my brain...good times?

MMWA Special Comment

Disclaimer: The following commentary contains constructive criticism. Reader discretion is advised.

Broadway had some downtime as far as attendance numbers went but they seem to be back up to speed these days. The crowd energy was pretty good for most of the night as well.

The show went about three hours...since it was the Christmas In July event, they did a lot of raffle drawings throughout the night.

Only three matches were announced ahead of time. The Jr. Heavyweight Title match was set up as A.J. Williams defending against Andrew Wilder but it became a triple threat match with J-Mal Swagg included.

Got to shake Dr. Tom Pritchard's hand before the show...wasn't aware of how long he'd been wrestling until I saw a very young Pritchard on one of the SICW TV show's classic clips. It sounds like he had some headaches with the Missouri State Athletic Commission...it would have sucked if they had been burned again like they were with Rhino a few years ago.

When a special guest is in the house(especially one who scouts talent), a promotion should put its best foot forward with regards to the in-ring content; to be frank, this show may not have been a good example of that.

Espinosa and Raphael King had matches at other shows in the area recently...they had a fine opener though there were a few rough patches. Commissioner Tim Miller played the Theodore Long role: Holla holla tag match, playa!

The triple threat match seemd to be ten minutes of spots in a five-minute bag. There was a Tower Of Doom spot at about the one-minute mark! I don't know if it was A.J.'s first three-way match but I'm almost positive it was the first three-way bout for both of the rookies. Nothing against Swagg at all, but the originally-scheduled singles bout may have produced a better overall matchup. Learn from the experience and put it toward the next outing, you know? Different matches have different "flows" to them, even things as seemingly "mundane" as tag matches or (nowadays) triple threats.

It was my first look at Dark Shadows(WLW wrestler) and he worked with two other Harley proteges in the form of Jack Gamble & Jon Webb. Freddie Fury seems to be popular at South Broadway but he was on the heel team for this night. Wasn't sure if we'd see Gamble's Canadian Destroyer but he did pull it off on Shadows. Solid bout.

I found out on Sunday that Gamble and his family got into a major car wreck on the way home as they were hit by a drunk driver...yikes. Their kid is reportedly okay and so is the worker that rode with them, but Gamble and his wife were pretty messed up. It's easy to forget how much traveling these guys do and crazy things can happen on the road. I can't say that I know Gamble that well since he doesn't live in the area, but all the best to him and his wife in their recovery.

Moondog Rover-Jackson Whitechapel got WAY too much time(around ten minutes). Rover is essentially all schtick so an opponent's best option is to play along...it looked like Whitechapel tried to play it straight and the bout dragged at times.

Espinosa/Hawkins vs. Osborne/King was good from what I saw. The heels were obviously not on the same page since King didn't appreciate Osborne busting up his title shot earlier in the night...that led to a fight after the bout was over.

The T.V. Title match was fine for what it was. I feel like Brian James deserves better on some level. The story seemed bass-ackwards as Phil E. Blunt interfered in the no-DQ match where James won the title, then Jimmy D won it back in fairly clean fashion(didn't see if tights or ropes were involved in the fall).

Wasn't sure what to expect out of Dr. Tom's in-ring contribution, but he worked more of the tag match than I expected. Fine main event with the backstory of Mephisto calling out Gary Jackson in recent months. Not sure where Blunt fits into this picture, especially since his last appearance was as a face. He seemed like an odd choice for the Pritchard match since he hasn't been a regular for Broadway in a long time.

Anywho...that covers the weekend. SICW is in East Carondelet on the 20th with MIDGET MADNESS~ FIST Combat returns to Pop's in Sauget on Friday the 26th.

As always: #yaywrestling

Dynamo Special Comment

Double-header weekend...WOO~! I feel old.

Attendance was solid; summer can be a tough time for drawing fans. Crowd energy was up and down throughout the night. Announced lineup had no changes.

It seemed like there were a lot of screwy finishes, even if it was just a brief distraction in a few cases.

Alexandre Rudolph's face/heel status in Dynamo has been a bit wishy-washy in the past year, but it looks like he's now solidified as a face.

I swear the local ring ropes are jinxed...at least in this case it was the bottom rope and didn't affect the match too badly.

I don't know if the match order was changed at all due to the rope issue. Either way, it was fortunate that they did the promo between the no-DQ match and the tornado tag match to separate the two wild brawls.

C.J. McManus did the karaoke/lounge singer wannabe gimmick in the LWA and now it's back for an encore, so to speak...

Had heard that Santel would be making his Dynamo debut and it looks like McDarby's along for the ride. Solid matchup with Kevin X...hope they'll be back in the future.

Strychnine's blatant rulebreaking(particularly the low blows like the Toxic Shock) may not fly too well in the current environment. GCW took the ECW route of "relaxed rules" and Nikki usually got away with tactics like that.

I had wondered about the status of the other Church Of Karrington guys...Dice resurfaced at ringside but Adam Rich is still MIA. Injury?

Quite a few things were set up for the future as we've got Cruz, Kevin X, and Dirden all gunning for Walsh's title. The Tag Title feud continues with the Bumrush Brothers(and Rudolph?) against the Travis Cook Organization, plus we've got the old-school Gateway guys against the Church Of Karrington. Works for me...

WWE Raw

-Commentators:  Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, & John Bradshaw Layfield.
-Randy Orton d. Johnny Fandango(w/ Summer Rae) after the RKO.
-Mark Henry's promo was interrupted by The Shield trio(U.S. Champion Dean Ambrose & Tag Team Champions Roman Reigns & Seth Rollins).  They beat him down, then left him laying with the triple-team spike powerbomb.
-World Champion Alberto Del Rio d. Dolph Ziggler(non-title); Ziggler hit a second-rope Fameasser and went for the pin, but Women's Champion A.J. Lee(upset about being dumped in a backstage segment) rang the bell to distract everyone.  That allowed Alberto to capitalize with a close-range superkick to win.  A.J. slapped Dolph afterwards and he tried to push her away, only to be mowed down by Big E Langston and dropped with the Big Ending.
-"R-Truth" Ron Killings became the latest victim of The Wyatt Family(Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper, & Erick Rowan)...

-Rob Van Dam d. Chris Jericho after the five-star frog splash.
-General Manager Brad Maddox gave WWE Champion John Cena the option to name his SummerSlam opponent and he picked...Daniel Bryan.

Comedy Part 491: Schiappa's Startout

Location:  Schiappa's
Emcee:  Me
Lineup:  Joe "The Animal" Lancey, Trevor Gertonson, Andrew Hagan, Julia Brown, Wayne Wiskow

The turnout for the debut shot at Schiappa's was...basically just the comics, though it was cool of Art Vieluf to stop by.  Gotta build the audience, you know?  I feel like I'm a bit rusty and out of practice lately, but then I haven't performed regularly in a while.  At least I'm finally trying to write some new material, so that's good...yay for motivation!  I had a good time and hopefully we can get some people out to the shows in the near future.

Comedy Part 490: Strykrz Revisited

Location: Strykrz
Emcee: Greg McClintock
After: Hoppy
Before: Bruce Veach

Bruce is setting up a lot of Illinois open-mics, so I hope to get back to performing regularly...planning on going to shows for the next three nights. Got a bit more time since there were only a handful of comics...Chris Smith lives in the area and he stopped in to do a set. Think I did okay for myself...audience was small but fun. Sounds like they had a really good crowd last week and hopefully we'll be able to build an audience for the Illinois shows.

-Next week:  Jay Briscoe vs. Matt Hardy for the Heavyweight Title.

SICW Wrestling Explosion

-Commentator:  Larry Matysik.
-Chris Hargas d. Flash Flanagan by countout; the two fought outside the ring and Flanagan missed with a wild swing of his kendo stick, then backdropped Hargas through the ropes right before the referee's count reached ten.
-Flashback to October 1979:   Gene Kiniski & Kevin Von Erich fought Dick Murdoch & Bulldog Bob Brown to a double DQ when all four men brawled outside the ring.  At one point Murdoch rammed Von Erich's head into the top turnbuckle and got the pin with feet on the ropes, but the second referee told the first what had happened and the pin was waved off.

-Dave Vaughn(w/ Travis Cook & Ken Kasa) d. Tag Team Champion Outtkast in a no-DQ match.  Things got crazy right out of the gate when Outtkast hit them with a baseball slide and knocked the bottom rope loose in the process!  The Travis Cook Organization used the numbers to their advantage with Shorty Biggs out of action; Vaughn focus his attack on the arm and got the win after a double-underhook DDT and shoulderbreaker.  The TCO had their eye on doing more damage to Outtkast but Rudolph re-entered the picture for the save.
-As the bottom rope was repaired, ring announcer Luke Roberts interviewed Heavyweight Champion Dan Walsh about his rivalry with Kevin X and his title defense later in the night against Ricky Cruz.
-K.C. Karrington & Adam Raw(w/ Greg Jovi) d. Jack Adonis & Mike Sharona(w/ Nikki Strychnine) in a tornado tag match; Karrington demanded that Nikki leave the ringside area.  Both teams pulled out all the stops with innovative moves and weapons...the end came when Raw wheelbarrowed Sharona into a Codebreaker by Karrington, then took him over in a wheelbarrow suplex!  That was enough for Karrington to pin Sharona for the win...
-C.J. McManus attempted to entertain the crowd with some karaoke lounge singing but they weren't too appreciative...
-Jake Dirden won a handicap match against Billy McNeil & Dash Rando; it started as a singles match between Dirden and Rando but Billy challenged Dirden to make it a two-on-one bout.  Dirden chokeslammed McNeil, then got the submission win on Rando with the Asiatic Spike.
-Kevin X d. Shawn Santel(w/ Mauler McDarby) after the Pavement Drop; McDarby protested the decision only to be dropped by a superkick.
-Steven Kennedy(w/ Greg Jovi, K.C. Karrington, Adam Raw, & Dice) d. Nikki Strychnine(w/ Jack Adonis & Mike Sharona); Jovi demanded that Adonis & Sharona leave the ringside area.  Nikki set the tone for the bout by choking out official Jay King before the opening bell; after that, the second referee Michael Crase allowed a lot of leeway on the rules.  Karrington inserted himself into the action once too often and Nikki chased him around the ring, leading to Kennedy getting the surprise rollup pin.  However, he paid for his tainted win with a spray of toxic waste in the face!
-Dan Walsh d. Ricky Cruz to retain the Heavyweight Title.  Cruz superkicked Walsh and went for the pin but Kevin X pulled the referee out of the ring.  Jake Dirden jumped the guardrail to interfere but Walsh and Cruz briefly worked together to clear him out of the ring.  Once the field was clear, Walsh hit Cruz with Paydirt to get the win and retain his title.  The two shook hands afterwards...but then Cruz leveled the champion with another superkick.
