-Dolph Ziggler d. Tyler Breeze(w/ Summer Rae) after the superkick (7:02 aired).
-Ryback d. Alexander Rusev(w/ Lana Perry) by countout; Lana was accidentally knocked down at ringside and Rusev elected to check on his fiancee instead of beating the ten-count (joined in progress; 1:45 aired).
-The Dudley Boys(Buh-Buh Ray & D-Von) & Tommy Dreamer(!) fought Luke Harper, Erick Rowan, & Braun Strowman(w/ Bray Wyatt) to a no-contest when all six men brawled in the ring (joined in progress; 3:29 aired).  The Wyatts got the upper hand, but Buh-Buh Ray knocked Bray off the ring apron and through a table.
-U.S. Champion Alberto Del Rio(w/ Zeb Colter) d. Goldust(non-title) with the Tree Of Woe double-stomp off the top rope (1:58).
-Jimmy & Jey Uso vs. The Lucha Dragons(Sin Cara & Kalisto) ended in a no-contest when Tag Team Champions The New Day(Big E Langston, Kofi Kingston, & Xavier Woods) attacked both teams (2:53).
-Sasha Banks(w/ Naomi Night & Tamina Snuka) d. Brie Bella(w/ Alicia Fox) with the Bank Statement(modified Crippler Crossface) (4:58).
-Roman Reigns d. WWE Champion Sheamus O'Shaunessy by DQ when Alexander Rusev, U.S. Champion Alberto Del Rio, and King Wade "Bad News" Barrett interfered (4:36).  Reigns had to win in 5:15(the length of his title reign) to win the title; if he lost, Dean Ambrose would lose his earned Intercontinental Title shot and Jimmy & Jey Uso would lose their upcoming Tag Team Title shot.  Sheamus dubbed his group "The League Of Nations"; Ambrose and the Usos made the save.
-Women's Champion Charlotte Flair(w/ Ric Flair) d. Becky Lynch(non-title); Paige Knight did commentary.  Charlotte appeared to tweak her knee or ankle at one point, but she was playing possum and rolled up Becky for the pin after a distraction by Ric (4:37).
-WWE Champion Sheamus O'Shaunessy, U.S. Champion Alberto Del Rio, Tag Team Champions The New Day(Big E Langston, Kofi Kingston, & Xavier Woods), King Wade "Bad News" Barrett, & Alexander Rusev d. Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, & Jimmy & Jey Uso in a handicap match when Sheamus pinned Ambrose after the Brogue Kick (17:46 aired).

Dynamo Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Dynamo Pro Wrestling show at The Ready Room in St. Louis, Missouri.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

Thanksgiving weekend was unusually busy this year; independent promotions usually shy away from the holidays.  As it turned out, there were three shows in the area on Saturday; Wrestling Invades America has traditionally run on Sundays, but they had an event in Swansea on Saturday.  Also, World Powerhouse Wrestling had a show in Collinsville...from the sound of things, each of the weekend shows had good draws.  (On a semi-related note, I was unaware that WIA's Nicholas Newman and MMWA's Prince Moses were one and the same...now we know and knowing is half the battle.)

This was Dynamo's debut at the local concert venue...as a few people put it, this was what Dynamo had hoped for Off Broadway to be.  With a more appealing weekend slot and more potential for "walk-by" interest from people in the Grove neighborhood, they got quite a few new eyes on the product.  Street parking was available, but I didn't want to risk the possibility of missing a "residential parking only" sign so I coughed up the four dollars for a secure lot.  Saw my comedian friend Tree Sanchez afterwards; knew she was a wrestling fan but she hadn't been to an indie show before.  Also caught up to a familiar face in attendance:  Dingo!  Hadn't seen him in a long time; always cool to see him around the shows.

Your ring announcer was Chris Roedel, your assistant ring announcer was Luke Roberts, and your referee was Patrick Hook.

"The Dirdey Intelligent Monster" Jake Dirden vs. "The Cowboy" Ric Maverick:  Dirden was fresh off his brief suspension from competition and vowed that he wasn't done with Heavyweight Champion Ricky Cruz by a longshot...hoo boy.  I wasn't that aware of Maverick's backstory, but he had wrestled in the area several years ago and only recently returned to action.  This opener was a glorified squash as Maverick couldn't mount much offense against the big man; Maverick fought back after Dirden's first chokeslam, but Dirden hit a second chokeslam and finished with the Asiatic Spike in 5:04.  Dirden continued to assault Maverick after the bell until co-promoter Crystal Yount ordered security guards to eject Dirden from the building.  In particular, one security guard rivaled Dirden in height and size...wonder if he'll play a bigger role down the line.

"Young & Dangerous" Evan Morris vs. Jayson Khaos(w/ Shawn Reel), D-1 Title Qualifier:  Speaking of returns to action, the former Shawn Almighty made his official comeback to the wrestling scene in the corner of the artist formerly known as D'Mon G.  The duo will apparently be known as The Midnight Society...I like the name and look so far.  Khaos is still working off the ring rust; he hadn't wrestled since his Gateway Championship Wrestling stint that ended in 2004.  The winner would advance in the competition for the newly-created D-1 Title; the winners of three six-way dances advance to a three-way finale for the championship.  (Jayden Fenix and Elvis Aliaga advanced at previous shows.)  I wasn't sure who would win this one as the momentum shifted several times and Reel interfered on a few occasions...Morris got the victory with a TKO onto the knee in 7:34.

Justin D'Air vs. Varik Morgan, D-1 Title Qualifier:  Morgan is a rookie who recently started at the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance; this was his Dynamo debut.  I was impressed by his performance, but I'm admittedly a huge mark for focused limb work in a match; Varik worked on the leg to keep the high-flyer grounded.  D'Air had trouble climbing the ropes due to both the leg damage and the ceiling beams, allowing Morgan to cut off his rallies...D'Air missed the 450 Splash and Morgan nearly scored the upset with a Whiplash/Cradle Shock, but D'Air kicked out at 2 1/2.  Morgan cut off D'Air on the turnbuckles, but D'Air fought out of a superplex attempt and delivered the Buff Blockbuster for the win in 8:22.  Nicely done!

The Bumrush Brothers("The Don Mega" Shorty Biggs & Outtkast) vs. The Bite Club(Rocket Mapache & Jackal) vs. "The Alternative" Ozzie Gallagher & Bahamut:  Having seen more match videos from the first Wood River show, I recognized The Snitch's cornerman "The Informant" as Bahamut under a different name; his official in-ring debut was at the 4 Hands Brewery show against Ric Maverick.  The match was oddly structured with two fan favorite duos and one rulebreaking team...Gallagher was the established personality on that team as Bahamut has just been a silent big guy.  One of the spots of the night saw Jackal hang onto a ceiling beam to deliver a flying rana on Gallagher!  All three teams are jockeying for position in the tag team ranks with High Level Enterprise(Jack Gamble & Jon Webb) awaiting their next challengers; it was the former champs who came out on top as Outtkast pinned Gallagher after Kast dropkicked Gallagher into a Samoan Drop by Shorty in 14:10.  Gallagher immediately blamed his teammate for the loss...and Bahamut laid him out with a Blackhole Slam.  Ouchie.

Billy McNeil vs. Ace Hawkins, D-1 Title Qualifier:  I don't think these two had crossed paths before(maybe in IHW?).  The Midnight Society came out to watch the matchup but didn't interfere at all...hmm.  These two had a good competitive matchup; Billy's toned down his style in recent years, but you'll still see something "ridiculously dangerous" on occasion.  The bout was longer than expected; McNeil won with a splash off the top rope in 15:53(!).  That puts Evan Morris, Justin D'Air, and McNeil in the next six-way dance en route to the crowning of the first D-1 Champion.

Intermission~!  Per Ben Simon, your concession report:  One Coca-Cola(thank you, Timothy Miller) and one pair of Reese's peanut butter cups.  All righty then.

"The Millenial" Danny Adams vs. Brandon Espinosa:  Espy claimed that Mike Outlaw had car problems and couldn't make it to the show...heavily insinuating that he knew more about said car problems than he was letting on.  Adams was in the unusual position of being a fan favorite for the night, but he was announced as hailing from south St. Louis so that helped his cause.  During the match, Jake Dirden made his way back into the building (having bought a ticket, bwahahaha) but tried to remain as inconspicuous as a 6'7" guy could possibly be.  Adams had control late in the bout, but Espy blatantly bashed him with a chair for the DQ in 10:11...BOO~!  Espinosa sought to do more damage, but Outlaw hit the ring in his street clothes for the save.  Outlaw did a fired-up promo about how he somehow had FOUR flat tires and suggested that Espy had something to do with it...if Espy wants to use low blows(as he did in Fenton) and chairs, how about a no-DQ match at the next show?  That'll work...  (The date of the next show was a slight surprise, as I'll get to shortly...)

Heavyweight Champion "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz vs. Kevin Lee Davidson for the Missouri Wrestling Revival Missouri State Title: Cruz's Dynamo Heavyweight Championship was not at stake as K.L.D. had not earned a shot within the ranks of DPW. K.L.D. is the current MMWA Heavyweight Champion and became the undisputed Heavyweight Champ of Wrestling Invades America earlier in the evening; it was a busy night for a few people who worked both Dynamo and WIA on Saturday. These two had a good bout at the 4 Hands Brewery show, but this was destined for a non-finish with Dirden's presence at ringside. I didn't catch the name of the guy who was in K.L.D.'s corner; I think he was associated with one of the show sponsors (EDIT: Chris Roedel tells me his name was Jamie Sasser). Hopefully I'll get to see what these two can do in a full-length main-event bout in the near future, but I guess the non-finish was the diplomatic solution(since K.L.D. holds other belts in the area). Dirden raised a ruckus from his spot in the crowd and that drew Ricky's attention as he was rallying...the locker room quickly emptied to separate the two, causing a no-contest in 4:57(BOO~!).

Crystal Yount blew a gasket as this was the second time Dirden had disrupted a show's main event...Ricky was furious and challenged Dirden to face him, saying he would put every championship in his possession at stake.  He even dropped an F-Bomb in the middle of it all...eep.  Crystal, facing the possibility of the issue not being settled otherwise, said the match was on for the next show:  January 9th.  The fans weren't too happy with the wait between shows...but Ricky and Jake kept going after each other and the wrestlers and security had to work overtime to separate them!

I don't know much about why the scheduled December 5th show was cancelled and I don't know how much I would be at liberty to discuss...I'll simply say that it's a complicated situation and hopefully it will be resolved ASAP.  At any rate, Dynamo may have found another good venue for their shows...it's good to see their reach expanding lately.

Post-show, myself and Drew Abbenhaus met up with Brian Kelley and Ben Simon(who were at WIA) and went to Denny's for the traditional post-show face-stuffing...with a paid comedy gig in my recent past, I indulged a bit with the Moons Over My-Hammy.  Only had water to drink; don't want to overload on caffeine.

At any rate, December looks like this:

-Saturday 12/5:  Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance in St. Louis, MO; Metro Pro Wrestling in Kansas City, KS
-Sunday 12/6:  Pro Wrestling Championship Series in Alton, IL
-Saturday 12/12:  Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in East Carondelet, IL

That's my special comment for this, the sixty-sixth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2015.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

-After the match, Vincent asked promoter Herb Simmons to book one more match between himself and Curtis Wylde...inside a steel cage!
-"Night Train/Great One/Gorgeous" Gary Jackson(w/ Big Daddy) d. Ax Allwardt by DQ when Brandon Espinosa interfered to break up the Texas Cloverleaf.  Ken Kasa made the save to run off Espy...and that led to Gary asking Herb to book another cage match for December:  Himself vs. Attila Khan (Herb lifted the suspensions of both Khan and Travis Cook).

-Nate Redwing d. "The Fittest Wrestler On Earth" Mark Sterling with the rewind powerslam to win the Heavyweight Title (2:29).

-Heavyweight Champion "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz fought Kevin Lee Davidson to a no-contest to retain the Missouri Wrestling Revival Missouri State Title.  Jake Dirden had bought a ticket to re-enter the building and repeatedly distracted Cruz, leading to another Cruz/Dirden confrontation; Crystal Yount emptied the locker room to keep the two separate (4:57).  Cruz angrily offered to put every title in his possession on the line to get Dirden back in the ring...Crystal made the match for the January 9th show!

Location:  American Legion Post 252 (Breese, IL)
Emcee:  John Dougherty
After:  Jerry Wahl
Before:  Derek Bennett
Headliner:  Tyrone Robinson

I crossed paths with Derek at Heavy Anchor recently and he was impressed with my set, so he invited me to perform at this show.  I indulged in the local cuisine(Ski soda) and did a ten-minute set; it's nice to know that I'm capable of doing a performance of that length without a note sheet with no problems whatsoever.  Also, a paid gig is always a plus(WOO~!).  I plan on checking out the Sunday night show at the Westport Funny Bone...the show has J.R. Brow headlining, A.J. Finney featuring, and Dan Walsh hosting.  Hopefully I can score a guest set or something...hint hint, anyone who might be reading this in a position to make that happen...

NXT + Main Event

WWE NXT

-Commentators:  Rich Brennan, Byron Saxton, & Corey Graves.
-With General Manager S. William Regal recovering from recent neck surgery, Michael Cole presided over the contract signing for the upcoming Takeover main event between NXT Champion Finn Bálor and Samoa Joe.  Cole said that Regal would not have approved the Bayley-Eva Marie NXT Women's Title match, but "WWE Corporate" made a phone call and the match will happen(hmm...).  Joe simply walked into the ring, signed the contract, and left without looking the champion in the eye...ouch.  Bálor signed the contract as well, but Joe attacked Bálor from behind as he left the ringside area.  Referees tried to restore order, but Bálor fought back and they had to be separated by the officials...but not before Joe took Bálor down in the Kokita Clutch.
-Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder d. The Vaudevillains("The Artiste" Aiden English & Simon Gotch) to retain the NXT Tag Team Titles when Wilder pinned English after the Shatter Machine(Flapjack-into-Codebreaker) (4:50 aired).  After the match, Enzo Amore & "Big Cass" Colin Cassady made their return and were all business as they brawled with the champions.
-Backstage:  Tom Phillips interviewed Eva Marie in Regal's office...she said she needed a bigger place to prepare for her title match.  Tom asked why the match was "inevitable" in her mind...she said it was time for a "real woman" to hold the title.  After showing off the gifts she got from her Total Divas castmates, she introduced Tom to her good friend Nia Jax and said that "nothing beats friendship"...
-Coming soon:  "The Drifter" Elias Samson.
-Asuka Urai vs. "The Total Diva" Dana Brooke never officially started as Emma Tayla attacked Asuka from behind.  Emma caught Asuka in the Emma Lock(inverted STF) as Dana trash-talked from the arena floor.

-Returning soon:  Sami Zayn.

-Next week:  Tommaso Ciampa vs. Samoa Joe.
-Bayley Rose d. Eva Marie(w/ Nia Jax) to retain the NXT Women's Title.  The main referee was pulled out by Jax in the early going, so Robinson entered the match and was "conveniently" distracted at other times when Jax interfered.  Robinson's intervention led to Eva hitting the Sliced Red #2 for a close near-fall.  Bayley blocked a second attempt at Eva's finisher and pushed Bayley into Robinson, knocking him to the floor.  Bayley momentarily fought off Jax and delivered a top-rope Belly-To-Bayley Hugplex for the win as the original referee re-entered to count three (6:40).  Jax laid out Bayley after the match, hitting several Legdrops O' Doom before dropping the belt on Bayley and leaving the ring.

Dynamo Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Dynamo Pro Wrestling show at the Knights Of Columbus Hall in Wood River, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

It was a tough choice of shows on Saturday as Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling had their monthly offering in East Carondelet.  Several factors weighed on my decision:  Driving distance, lineups(such as they were), and potential to see the match videos in the near future.  Dynamo is apparently not releasing a DVD of the previous Wood River event from May(I went to Pro Wrestling Championship Series that night); I've seen most of the match videos but not all of them.  (If anyone could drop me the Keon Option-Brandon Espinosa or Mike Outlaw-Snitch matches from that event, I'd appreciate it.)  I should be able to catch up on SICW via Wrestling Explosion; thanks to Drew Abbenhaus for updating me on the goings-on.  December will be a big show for them as they'll have THREE cage matches; I should be in attendance for that event and it'll most likely be my final wrestling show of the calendar year.  (Scroll down for the other quick 'n' dirty results from the weekend.)

Dynamo had a nice little turnout for the show; I've always liked the Wood River venue as the crowd noise sounds great.  It's the anti-Glen Carbon in that regard, as I put it.  These shows have been a homecoming of sorts for The Professionals as they used to frequent the building with Metro East Championship Wrestling.  The show also featured the presence of former MECW Champion Eric Allen as a referee; though he's more or less retired from in-ring competition, he has contributed his artistic talents to the wrestling world in recent years (including CHIKARA).

The focus of the Wood River shows has been the younger up-and-coming wrestlers on the roster.  After the show-ending brawl in Fenton, Heavyweight Champion Ricky Cruz and Jake Dirden were both suspended from competition; Ricky was in attendance but didn't appear in an official capacity.  Jake Dirden was wrestling elsewhere on this night.  Several of the other Dynamo regulars were at SICW or Gateway Elite Wrestling in Lake Ozark(particularly the World League Wrestling crew).  Only a handful of matches were publicized beforehand:  Outlaw-Stallion and Bite Club-Professionals were announced Monday on the Brothers On Whatever Show on 920 AM(that radio station seems familiar for some reason...).  McNeil-Espinosa was announced on the day of the show.

Your ring announcer was Chris Roedel, your assistant ring announcer was Luke Roberts, and your referees were Michael Crase and Eric Allen.

Justin D'Air vs. C.J. Berry:  Berry made his debut at the previous Wood River show in a loss to then-new champion Jake Dirden.  D'Air acknowledged the low ceiling by climbing to the top turnbuckle and doing an impromptu ropewalk with the ceiling's assistance.  This was essentially a battle of fan favorites, though D'Air seemed to have the edge in crowd support.  Both probably wished there was more ceiling clearance for aerial moves, but it was not to be.  This was a solid opener; D'Air won in 9:20 with a running Diamond Cutter while pulling Berry off the turnbuckles.

Garrett Shanks vs. Sean Orleans:  Both men were making their Dynamo debuts, but this was Shanks' first match ever.  He portrayed a surfer/beach-type character and was billed as hailing from Santa Cruz...a nod to our old buddy Mike Gordon?  The match wasn't that great, but perhaps it was a case of debut nerves...we'll see how Shanks does in future outings.  I've seen Orleans in better outings with different opponents, particularly the best-of-three-falls match with Everett Connors this past spring.  Orleans focused on the leg for the majority of the match, eventually winning with the advanced curbstomp in 8:25.

Billy McNeil(w/ C.J. McManus) vs. Brandon Espinosa:  I was looking forward to this one.  C.J. is Billy's new manager and seems to be persuading him to the Dark Side of The Force, pushing him away from his usual fan interaction.  C.J. also put Billy in more conservative entrance attire, something that clearly didn't sit well with him.  As expected, the match was really good with Espy focusing his attack on Billy's arm to set up the cross-armbreaker.  McNeil rallied, but was momentarily distracted by McManus encouraging him to go to the top rope.  As a result, he missed a Spiral Tap and Espy set up for a flying knee strike...but C.J. grabbed Espy's foot to stop him.  Billy took exception to the interference and stepped through the ropes to argue with his manager, but that allowed Espy to come back and deliver a deadlift superplex followed by a brainbuster...for two!  McNeil came back with a rolling prawn cradle out of nowhere for a near-fall, but Espy got him in the cross-armbreaker for the tapout in 10:25.

After the match, Billy left the ringside area, but C.J. told the fans that he had a new protege that wouldn't "let him down" like McNeil had.  That heralded the debut of Jason Khaos...who turned out to be the artist formerly known as D'Mon G!  I hadn't seen him in the ring in a long time...probably not since his later days in Gateway Championship Wrestling in 2004.  He had been talking about a potential comeback, but this was his first match in about a decade.

Prince Moses vs. Jason Khaos(w/ C.J. McManus):  Moses is a trainee at the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance and recently made his debut at South Broadway.  Khaos has done some training in mixed martial arts and it showed in his updated ring style.  "The Prince Of The People" got some token offense, but C.J. distracted him as he climbed the ropes and Khaos cut him off.  Khaos got the tapout win with a rear naked choke(aka Samoa Joe's Kokita Clutch) in 8:43...nicely done.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon-Endorsed Concession Count:  Two root beers.

Kevin Lee Davidson vs. Bahamut(w/ Sophie Darling):  Darling made her managerial debut at the previous Wood River show in the corner of The Snitch.  (Presumably The Snitch was in witness protection for the evening and couldn't complete.)  Bahamut is a bigger masked guy who made his debut at the 4 Hands Brewery show a few months ago; he also competed at the October event in Glen Carbon.  This turned out to be a really good HOSS~! battle between the two heavyweights and it was one of my favorite matches of the night.  I worried for the safety of the ring, as did several fans around me...especially when Bahamut slammed K.L.D. and followed up with a running senton.  On top of that, K.L.D. was able to pick up Bahamut for his Regal Roll...yikes!  K.L.D. picked up the victory after the spinebuster in 6:41...good stuff!

The Bite Club(Rocket Mapache & Jackal) vs. The Professionals(Shawn Santel & Mauler McDarby):  Jackal was once against sporting a Jynx T-shirt for his matchup...notably, the Jynx T-shirts were also on sale at the merchandise table.  (Whatever happened to that Jynx guy, anyway?)  With new Tag Team Champions in the form of High Level Enterprise(Jack Gamble & Jon Webb), both teams are jockeying for position in the rankings.  Santel & McDarby won a triple threat match over The Bite Club and The Bumrush Brothers(Shorty Biggs & Outtkast) via Shenanigans(tm) to earn a shot, but they came up short against H.L.E. in Fenton so they're looking for another opportunity.  Rocket and Jackal came oh-so-close to capturing the tag team gold on a few occasions when The Black Hand Warriors(Michael Magnuson & Dave DeLorean) had the belts, but they haven't quite reached that level yet.  There were a lot of quick tags on both sides and the momentum swung a few times as the match progressed.  However, it was chicanery that spelled the difference; Rocket and McDarby were battling and the referee was stunned by an accidental elbow, allowing Santel to whack Rocket with his shillelagh.  That allowed McDarby to get the tainted pin in 12:10...are The Professionals due for another title shot?

Mike Outlaw vs. "The Lone Star" Curt Stallion:  These two have battled in other parts of the country (including a steel cage match!), but this was their first encounter in the greater St. Louis area.  Stallion came out as a fan favorite, but he established the tone with a more intense version of the standard SPORTSMANSHIP~! handshake.  They had a really good competitive matchup with Outlaw as the definite fan favorite and Stallion working heelish without outright cheating.  The finish saw Stallion attempt a top-rope Frankensteiner only to be headbutted off the turnbuckles to the mat.  Outlaw didn't have much ceiling clearance, but still managed to land the High Noon(top-rope elbowdrop) for the win in 12:49.  They shook hands after the match and all is well...

Thanksgiving weekend will be uncharacteristically busy this year with three shows on Saturday.  Dynamo makes its debut at The Ready Room in St. Louis, Wrestling Invades America returns to Swansea, and World Powerhouse Wrestling has a show in Collinsville.

December looks like this:
-Saturday 12/5: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in Fenton, MO; Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance in St. Louis, MO
-Sunday 12/6: Pro Wrestling Championship Series in Alton, IL
-Saturday 12/12: Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in East Carondelet, IL

That's my special comment for this, the sixty-fifth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2015.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

P.S. We are all marks.

Comedy Part 628: Hey Guys, Open-Mics Are Moving

Location:  Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee:  Gary Schultz
After:  Chris Harris
Before:  Rex & Echo Selix

Open-mics will be on the second and fifth Wednesdays of December at Hey Guys Comedy, then will be moving to every Thursday night in 2016...hopefully they'll generate more interest when they're not directly opposing the Valley Park Funny Bone open-mic shows.  We got a decent little turnout for tonight's show and we each got ten minutes...I'm feeling a lot more confident that I'm capable of doing a feature-length set.  It's just a matter of remembering all of that material and doing it in one shot.  I wondered if a "freedom fries" reference would be too soon given current events, but it's gone over well in the past several evenings.  Next week will be the two Funny Bone open-mics...wouldn't mind taking it easy for the Thanksgiving weekend, but I do have a show in Breese, IL on Friday.  Hope to see you at the shows!

WWE Smackdown

-Commentators:  Rich Brennan, Jerry Lawler, & Booker T.
-Antonio Cesaro d. Mike Mizanin with the Crippler Crossface (0:47).
-"The Man That Gravity Forgot" Adrian Neville & The Dudley Boys(Buh-Buh Ray & D-Von) d. Stardust & The Ascension(Konnor O'Brian & Rick Viktor) when Buh-Buh pinned Viktor after the Dudley Death Drop (5:29 aired).
-Tyler Breeze(w/ Summer Rae) d. Zack Ryder with the Unprettier (1:19).  Dolph Ziggler made a mess of Breeze's V.I.P. area and superkicked him after the match.
-Women's Champion Charlotte Flair d. Brie Bella(w/ Alicia Fox)(non-title) with the Figure-Eight Leglock(bridging figure-four) (4:22).
-Tag Team Champion Big E Langston(w/ Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods) d. Kalisto(w/ Sin Cara) after a Warrior Splash (1:18).  Ryback saved the Lucha Dragons from a post-match attack.
-Roman Reigns & Dean Ambrose fought Intercontinental Champion Kevin Owens & U.S. Champion Alberto Del Rio(w/ Zeb Colter) to a double countout (8:17 aired).

TNA Impact

-Commentators:  Josh Mathews & "The Pope" D'Angelo Dinero.
-World Title Series:  Amazing Kong d. Brooke Tessmacher after a chokeslam (6:15).
-World Title Series:  X-Division Champion Tigre Uno d. Manik(non-title) with a corkscrew split-legged moonsault (6:53).
-World Title Series:  Eric Young d. James Storm; the referee was bumped and Young delivered a punt to the groin from behind, followed by the piledriver for the win (5:53 aired).
-World Title Series:  Mahabali Shera d. Aiden O'Shea via Skyhigh (4:50).
-World Title Series:  Eli Drake d. Tommy "Crimson" Mercer with a standing armbar (5:17).
-World Title Series:  King Of The Mountain Champion Bobby Roode d. Abyss(non-title) via spinebuster (9:11 aired).
-Next week:  Bobby Lashley vs. Austin Aries, Davey Richards vs. Robbie Eckos, and Micah Camacho vs. Jessie Godderz.  Also next week:  Tigre Uno vs. Manik vs. D.J. Shiima Xion to break the tie in the X-Division Block(all three have six points).  The unique format:  The winner of the first decision will leave the match and the remaining two will compete until a second decision is rendered.  The winners of the two falls will be the ones to advance in the Series.

-Nia Jax d. Carmella Van Damme with the Rock Bottom and Legdrop O' Doom (2:49).
-Backstage:  Alexa Bliss(w/ Wesley Blake & Buddy Murphy) said she's tired of hearing about the Ironman Match...respect is fine, but she wants the NXT Women's Title.  However, a referee informed her that Blake & Murphy are banned from ringside...she took that news in stride, all things considered.
-Jason Jordan & Chad Gable d. The Ascension(Konnor O'Brian & Rick Viktor) when Gable pinned Viktor with the Grand Amplitude(Jordan belly-to-back throw into Gable bridging back suplex) (6:23).
-Backstage:  Tom Phillips interviewed NXT Women's Champion Bayley Rose about tonight's title defense against Alexa...she can't just steal the title, she'll have to earn it.
-Emma Tayla d. Mary Kate with the Emma Lock(inverted STF) (3:09).
-Backstage last week:  Baron Corbin would like to say that it wasn't personal with Apollo Crews...but it was.  He issued a challenge for NXT Takeover: London...that show is shaping up in a hurry.
-NXT Tag Team Champions Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder d. Corey Hollis & John Skyler(non-title) when Dawson pinned Skyler after the Shatter Machine(Flapjack-into-Codebreaker) (5:04).  The Vaudevillains("The Artiste" Aiden English & Simon Gotch) will get their rematch for the Tag Titles on next week's show.
-Backstage:  Tom Phillips interviewed Asuka Urai...but Dana Brooke interrupted before she could speak, challenging her to a match on next week's show.  Asuka was all too happy to accept.
-On location:  Samoa Joe said that he wasn't allowed in the building due to the tense situation between him and NXT Champion Finn Bálor...they sign the contract on next week's show for the title match at NXT Takeover: London.
-Bayley Rose d. Alexa Bliss with the Belly-To-Bayley Hugplex to retain the NXT Women's Title (8:24 aired).  After the match, Bayley's celebration was interrupted by Eva Marie...she said she was getting the next title shot on next week's show.

Comedy Part 627: Jacobsmeyer's II-Electric Boogaloo

Location:  Jacobsmeyer's Tavern in Granite City
Emcee:  Mike McGuire
After:  Jim Scariot
Before:  Greg McClintock

Darin Duffin asked me to do this comedy showcase, so I performed in front of a somewhat sparse audience...the mic volume was turned up REALLY high, so I had to adjust my tone to compensate.  I'm not sure how much time I did, but I had my notebook on stage so I probably relied on it too much to remember jokes.  The rest of the show lineup consisted of Larry Greene, Josh Miller, Kathy Zeman, and Landon Meyer...good times.  Next up for me:  Open-mic at Hey Guys Comedy tomorrow night!

Comedy Part 626: Raining Down Jokes

Location:  Westport Funny Bone
Emcee:  Tim Convy
After:  Andrew Topping
Before:  Max Price

Still working out the extended version of my "raver girl" joke...have a few more ideas to add to it.  Also tried out a new idea stemming from current events...not sure where it falls on the "topical" vs. "too soon" scale, but it involves "freedom fries".  Anywho, I went up fairly early and feel like I did pretty well...a friend from the local wrestling scene has been checking out the open-mics on a regular basis, so it's been cool to see him at the shows.  Next up for me:  Performing at Jacobsmeyer's Tavern in Granite City tomorrow night...showtime is 8:00!

SLA Special Comment (Part 2)

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's St. Louis Anarchy show at the Spaulding Hall Club in Alton, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

The doors didn't open until five minutes before 7:00 on Friday, but Saturday went a bit smoother as they let us in around 6:35.  (It probably helped that everything was already set up.)  I've learned from both independent wrestling and local comedy that shows rarely start on time, so that was no big deal...just a heads-up to those unfamiliar with either scene.  *thumbs-up*

Card changes:  Noted cancellations for the weekend were Angelus Layne and Sugar Dunkerton(personal reasons), Andy Dalton(injury), and Donovan Danhausen(unknown).  Jeremy Wyatt wasn't on the Saturday show for unknown reasons.  As a result, Cage faced Danny Adams and Trik faced Mike Outlaw.

Your ring announcer was Kyle McNeil; your referees were P.J. Drummond, Brandon Tolle, and the other guy from Friday who I didn't recognize.

Jordan Lacey came out for the preshow match, but said he was frustrated to be in that position and would rather hang up the tights than be reduced to that spot.  That brought out Heavyweight Champion Gerald James & Dorian Victor to lay the badmouth on their fellow LWA original...Lacey got fed up and challenged Gerald with the mindset of having nothing to lose.  Gerald and Dorian wanted it to be more interesting and Lacey said he would never challenge for the title again if he didn't win it.  However, Dorian said that he was talking about retirement, so why not put his career on the line?  That set up the night's championship match (A title match had been advertised but no opponent had been announced.)

Jojo Bravo vs. Christian Rose(w/ Greg Jovi):  Rose used Wyatt's usual theme music and people were expecting Wyatt...TROLL~!  Rose came out in a Chicago Cubs baseball cap...hey, it's still topical.  Jojo apologized to referee P.J. Drummond for the shoving match that occurred on Friday, so he was in a better state of mind on this night.  Unfortunately, the result of the match left him more frustrated than before; Bravo got Rose in his own No-Leaf Clover(Liontamer-style Boston crab), but Jovi distracted the ref so he didn't see Rose's tapout.  That allowed Rose to recover and turn the tide, hooking the No-Leaf Clover for the submission in 8:30.

"The Money" Matt Cage vs. Danny Adams(w/ The Cause):  Before the match, The Cause members brought out referee Austin Blackburn in a wheelchair and neckbrace...they proclaimed him to be their newest recruit as he respected THE RULES~! the previous night.  (If I'm not mistaken, he refereed The Cause's previous matches and several of those had finishes where he was "conveniently" distracted...)  The numbers game was overwhelmingly against Cage, even with Blackburn "wheelchair-bound" for the night.  Adams had several near-wins, but Cage survived long enough to block a sunset flip for the surprise win in 13:26.  The Cause retreated...but then Alex Castle made his way through the audience from the front door and attacked Cage from behind.  Castle finished the beatdown with a Pedigree...this feud MUST CONTINUE~!

Mike Outlaw vs. Trik Davis:  This was a good solid matchup that came down to the experience gap between the two...they seemed to be evenly matched in most other categories.  It can be a shock to the system to work for a different promotion than your "home base"; you're essentially starting from square one all over again.  However, it's a necessary step to get out of one's comfort zone to work with different people in front of different audiences...it's one of the most effective ways to truly get better.  Davis won with the Cattle Mutilation in 8:01...I feel like I've seen someone else use that hold before, but the person's name escapes me.

The Hooligans(Devin & Mason Cutter) vs. Roscoe Eat Lisa("The Big Mustache On Campus" Mikey McFinnegan & "Zesty" Zakk Sawyers):  This was essentially a battle of fan-favorite teams, but it's tough to get cheers against The Hooligans in this neck of the woods.  The Cutters used a chair with no disqualification called, so I guessed that the previous night's DQ was strictly an angle to put Blackburn with The Cause.  The Hooligans won a comepetitive match when Devin(I think) pinned Sawyers after the wheelbarrow/flying second-rope DDT combo in 13:56...cue post-match mutual respect.  Zakk doesn't have a whole lot of momentum going into his title shot at Gerald James in a few weeks...

D.J. Shiima Xion vs. Everett Connors(w/ The Cause):  It was an interesting choice of a second opponent for D.J. Z., but the junior members of The Cause looked good in their respective singles bouts on this night.  Like Cage before him, D.J. Z had to fend off interference from the other members of the stable...and like Cage, he was able to overcome the odds(though I didn't really expect him to lose twice in the same weekend anyway).  The D.J. won with the "ZDT" in 10:12...somewhere Jake "The Snake" Roberts shed a tear as a DDT finished a match.

Intermission~!  I briefly crossed paths with Mark Bland and immediately wondered if he would be in the Rumble.  Anywho, on to Ben Simon's favorite part of my commentaries...concession tally~!  I had two root beers and a Mountain Dew for the night, though two of those sodas were bought for me by other people...much appreciation to Timothy Miller(taking in his first St. Louis Anarchy show) and Dave McCutcheon.

Gerald James(w/ Dorian Victor) vs. Gorgeous Jordan Lacey for the Heavyweight Title, best-of-three-falls match:  Lacey went old-school-ish with the robe, feather boa, and smaller tights...he even gave a few lucky(?) fans an impromptu lap dance.  However, the heels went the subterfuge route in a hurry as Victor blindsided him with a chair before the bell...then Gerald ran in from the front door and quickly encouraged the referee to start the match.  James delivered a "Shadows Over Hell-Bow"(top-rope elbowdrop on a bent-over opponent) to win the first fall in 15 seconds...a few fans didn't realize it was two-out-of-three and thought it was already over.  Despite the early advantage, Lacey battled back and they brawled outside the ring, leading to the big man diving off the ledge by the building stairway!  He took out Gerald, Dorian, and the ringside security guards...Hardcore Andy just CAN'T catch a break these days.  The match went back into the ring and Lacey caught him in the Jenna Jameson(swinging uranagi) for a clean second fall in 7:20...DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?!?  Gerald fought back but couldn't keep the challenger down in the deciding fall, so he blatantly beat him down with a chair and got disqualified in 10:11.  (Okay...so the rule-enforcement seems to be a bit more arbitrary than I thought.)  Gerald escaped with the title and his 25-month title reign continues...

While Jordan Lacey technically won the match, he didn't win the title...and he acknowledged that it was his last match.  Several wrestlers came out, primarily Lethal Wrestling Alliance originals like Adam Caster, Evan Gelistico, promoter Pierre Abernathy, and The Viking War Party.  They noted that Lacey has made a lot of contributions behind the scenes in both the LWA and SLA, even dating back to when several of the local-based wrestlers got started.  Lacey got a great ovation for his retirement...he flew under the radar compared to his contemporaries who traveled outside of the area, but he was a solid guy with an entertaining character(particularly in his "Gorgeous" days).  All the best to Jordan Lacey and his family...thank you!

30-Man Anarchy Rumble:  Rumble-style battle royals tend to vary wildly in their entrance intervals...often within the same match and usually settling somewhere in the realm of "whenever it's dramatically appropriate".  I've seen a few on the indie scene(Dynamo did a 20-wrestler Rumble about a year and a half ago) but this was the first to be specifically advertised as a 30-man Rumble.  People who didn't work twice on the show:  Mike Outlaw, The Hooligans, Jordan Lacey(retired), Gerald James(since the Rumble was for a guaranteed future title shot).  A blow-by-blow would be nearly impossible, but I'll do my best to hit the high points here...it had been hinted to me that a few surprise entrants would be in the match, but I wasn't sure who to expect...

#1 was Davey Vega, putting him in the position for an endurance mark.  #2 was Tag Team Champion Evan Gelistico of The Cause, rekindling an old rivalry; Gelistico once defeated Vega for the LWA Heavyweight Title, leading to him being "grandfathered in" as the first St. Louis Anarchy Champion.  #3 was Steve O. Reno and #4 was Mikey McFinnegan...#5 was Danny Adams, putting the numbers game in favor of The Cause.  McFinnegan was the first one gone at the hands of Gelistico.  #6 was the first surprise entrant:  Billy McNeil, making his first SLA appearance in a long time.  However, his night didn't go well as #7 was Everett Connors, putting three members of The Cause in the ring at once.  Connors eliminated McNeil to the delight of a partisan section of the crowd...no idea what that was about.  #8 was Matt Cage, who nearly went out quickly but landed in the lap of the wheelchair-bound Austin Blackburn, thus not touching the floor.  HA!  #9 was "The Littlest Viking" Jake Parnell...the scale tipped toward the fan-favorite side of the ledger, but The Cause had teamwork on their side as Gelistico & Connors threw out Reno and Parnell(respectively).  #10 was Trik Davis, but he didn't last long as he was thrown out by Cage.

#11 was Alex Castle, reigniting the feud between the Kentucky Buffet members.  #12 was...Sean Orleans?  Sure, why not.  #13 was "The Freestyle Phenom" Jay Howard who threw a few guys around with relative ease.  #14 was another random entry:  Greg Jovi.  He immediately tangled with Orleans...who do you root for in THAT exchange?  Orleans threw out Jovi, but The Cause members quickly ganged up on Orleans to dump him to the floor.  #15 was Dash Rando, cheerful as ever...but his night was short-lived as Castle sent him floorward.  Suddenly the ring went into clearance mode as bodies went flying:  Gelistico tossed Howard, Cage got some payback as he eliminated Castle, and The Cause members threw out Cage.  Just as quickly, The Cause's night went south as Vega eliminated Adams and Connors at the same time, then sent Gelistico to the floor!  #16 was Austin Blackburn who MIRACULOUSLY~! rose from his wheelchair...and just as quickly left the ring courtesy of Vega, so he humbly returned to his seat.

#17 was "All About Me" Mallaki Matthews and Vega's momentum didn't appear to be taking any sudden turns...ditto for #18, Super Electro.  #19 was Mat Fitchett, changing the complexion of the match in a hurry...Vega disposed of Mallaki in short order and Fitchett threw out Electro.  #20 was Dorian Victor, making his first official in-ring appearance in several years...was it that long ago that he was main-eventing against Samoa Joe in the LWA?

Victor was in a bad spot against both Vega and Fitchett...#21 was Zakk Sawyers and that didn't help his cause.  #22 was "The Alaskan Heatthrob" Jack Adonis...wait, WHAT?  He was resplendent in his shiny new "Hateway Championship Wrestling" T-shirt, drawing a few "GCW" chants...ah, memories.  It seemed like he had been eliminated quickly, but he only went through the ropes and retreated to the backstage area for some reason.  Dorian eliminated Sawyers(putting another damper on Zakk's weekend), but Vega disposed of Dorian...that led to Dorian dragging Vega out of the ring and beating him down on the floor, putting him out of the action for a short time.

#23 was Paco Gonzalez and #24 was Christian Rose(adding some more rulebreaking flavor to the bout).  #25 was Tag Team Champion Adam Caster of The Cause...despite his power advantage, he didn't make as much of an impact as I would have guessed.  #26 was Mike Sharona(!), sporting the same HCW shirt as Adonis...Adonis accompanied him to ringside and the two bided their time on the floor as the action raged in the ring.  That was because the third member of their group was on his way out...lucky #27 was Nikki Strychnine!

Strychnine had resurfaced on Twitter this weekend, but I had no idea he'd be a part of this show...I got a suspicion when Adonis and then Sharona showed up, but here he was with the barbed-wire "crown of thorns" and toxic waste can in tow.  Adonis and Sharona finally entered the ring as Nikki bided his time...he seems to be obsessed with social media to spread his message of hatred these days.  (Given recent events, probably a wise move.)  #28 was Jojo Bravo and #29 was "The American Viking" Alexandre Rudolph...Rudolph quickly cleaned house, dishing out chokeslams for everyone.  Fitchett eliminated Adonis(for real this time), then Rose went on a tear by throwing out Sharona, Rudolph, and finally Strychnine...Nikki was barely affected as he continued to tweet to his followers.  Har har.

#30 was Ricky Starks(having earned his slot in his match on Friday), rounding out our field...the final seven were Vega, Fitchett, Paco, Rose, Caster, Jojo, and Starks.  Vega eliminated Caster, putting The Cause out of the match for good.  Bravo threw out Starks and Rose eliminated Paco.  The referee were occupied on the other side of the ring and didn't see Jojo throw out Rose, so Rose got back into the ring and tossed Jojo(another case of bad officiating leading to Jojo's downfall!).  Rose was left with Vega and Fitchett and the odds were against him, leading to Vega throwing him out for good.

That left friends and tag partners Vega and Fitchett as the final two...both of whom had previously challenged Gerald James for the title and come very close to unseating him.  It went down to the wire as each men took the other over the top rope and they battled on the ring apron.  I feared a potential draw finish as Vega landed a superkick, but Fitchett fired off a Pele Kick out of nowhere and it was Vega who fell to the floor, giving Fitchett the win in 48:35!

As it stands right now, Fitchett will await the winner of next month's Gerald James-Zakk Sawyers title match at Pro Wrestling Championship Series' season finale...notably, that event will take place at the Alton venue instead of Granite City as it's a joint effort from both SLA and PWCS.  Questions abound as it relates to the Rumble entrants...will the HCW trio stick around?  We shall see...

Post-show, I went to Denny's in north St. Louis County with Brian Kelley and Gary Weiss, meeting up with Drew Abbenhaus after his ring announcing gig at SICW's Swansea show.  Placemats are very effective advertisements as I ordered a Bacon Lover's Steakburger with fries...only water to drink as I'm watching my weight.  (Har har.)
