Comedy Part 571: Hey Guys, It's A College Crowd

Location:  Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee:  Marcelis Flores
After:  Gary Schultz
Before:  Joe "The Animal" Lancey

We had one of our best crowds for an open-mic night at Hey Guys Comedy to date...woo.  Much appreciation to the newer comics as they brought a lot of people to the show.  Did a good mix of established jokes, newer stuff, and updated older material and had another really good set.  Hopefully this will get the ball rolling as word gets out about the club in general and open-mic night in particular.  Even saw a friend in attendance, which was cool...always a plus.  Next up for me will probably be next week's Valley Park Funny Bone open-mic...hope to see you there!

WWE NXT

Commentators:  Rich Brennan, Byron Saxton, & Corey Graves.

Sami Zayn's music started the show, but it was NXT Champion Kevin Owens who made his entrance(once again wearing a John Cena T-shirt).  He said he would do an open challenge to defend his title, but he's not an insecure person and feels like his challengers should earn their title shots.  He said he's a good person and he allowed the fans to have their moment when Samoa Joe made his big appearance...he would deal with Joe if he showed his face again and he'll deal with Cena at Elimination Chamber.  General Manager S. William Regal confronted Owens...Owens said that Regal put his hands on him first, causing Regal to respond that that was the ONLY reason he still works there.  Owens denied any involvement in Hideo Itami's injury, just in passing.  The segment was interrupted by...Solomon Crowe?  After a few choice words on Crowe's part, Owens decided that Crowe had "earned an opportunity"...and Regal made the non-title match for the show's main event.

Backstage:  Hideo Itami(w/ arm in sling) addressed his injury status.  Someone attacked him from behind and deprived him of his opportunity...he vowed to make a comeback in the near future.

Backstage at last week's Takeover special:  Renee Young interviewed Zack Ryder, but he was interrupted by an overhyped Mojo Rawley.  "And people said *I* was over the top..."

Emma Tayla(w/ Dana Brooke & new music) d. Bayley Rose with the Emma Lock(inverted STF) (4:13).  Dana held Bayley for Emma to slap...Charlotte Flair made the save, but they double-teamed her as well.  Dana held Charlotte for Emma's slap, then dropped Charlotte with the Whiplash.

Backstage at last week's Takeover special:  Renee interviewed Baron Corbin about his win over Rhyno...he said he was the ONLY unstoppable force in NXT.  Rhyno stormed into the interview and said the match was fun...they should do it again sometime.

NXT Tag Team Champions Wesley Blake & Buddy Murphy(w/ Alexa Bliss) d. Elias Samson & Mike Rawlis(non-title); Murphy hit the running suplex on Samson and Blake got the pin after the frog splash (3:15).  Alexa added a Sparkle Splash(corkscrew top-rope splash) on Samson after the bell.

Backstage:  Devin Taylor interviewed Blake, Murphy, & Alexa.  Alexa made it simple; they're all winners and they gravitate toward each other.  Alexa mocked Carmella Van Damme for being the princess of the "garbage dump" known as Staten Island; they'll face each other next week.

Finn Bálor d. Tye Dillinger with the Coup De Grace(top-rope double-stomp) (2:48).

Earlier today:  Greg Hamilton interviewed Jason Jordan at the Performance Center.  He said he'd be just fine without Tye Dillinger and he had found a new tag team partner.  Chad Gable thought it was him...but Jordan turned him down, saying he already had someone else in mind.

NXT Champion Kevin Owens d. Solomon Crowe(non-title) with the pop-up powerbomb (5:41 aired).  Owens set up Crowe for the apron powerbomb, but Samoa Joe made his entrance and Owens backed off to the ring.  Joe went in...and Owens went out.

Comedy Part 570: North By North Westport

Location:  Westport Funny Bone
Emcee:  Scott James
After:  Quentin Wilbert
Before:  Tim Convy

Honestly couldn't remember the last time I was on stage at Westport...checking my previous blogs, it was March of 2013!  My main goals were to focus on newer material and strong delivery...I've entered the comedy competition so I want to be ready for that.  I went up around the middle of the show and felt like I had a strong set, so I accomplished what I wanted to do.  I nailed my time at right around four minutes...I was worried since I hadn't seen the first light, but it turned out okay.  Hopefully I can get back on the radar at Westport since I haven't been there too often in a while.  Next up for me:  Hey Guys Comedy open-mic on Wednesday night!

HRW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Sunday's High Risk Wrestling show at the VFW Hall in Cahokia, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

I did watch the MMWA show from May 9th via YouTube...semi-detailed results are in the blog entry for that weekend.  From what I understand, all of the members of Sean Orleans' team(from the elimination tag match in December) got "title shot at any time" contracts as incentive to be on his side.  The official word is that Espinosa's contract is the only one that remains...I must have missed Laurence Johnson's cash-in unless it was used for one of his Jr. Heavyweight Title shots since that time.

I plan to do video reviews of the Dynamo shows that I have missed in recent times, those being the Pittsfield show from October 2013(when Jake Dirden first won the title) and the Wood River show from the 9th.

Other weekend events included Pointfest on Saturday(previously the site of a couple of outing for Gateway Championship Wrestling) and Comic Con in St. Louis.  WWE Champion Seth Rollins and Paige Knight made appearances at different times...wish I could have gone, but I've gotten old and semi-responsible with my finances.  (One car payment to go!)

HRW has been an interesting topic in recent times.  The group uses a lot of outside talent, including nationally-known independent wrestlers, but it doesn't seem to draw very well.  A number of factors could play into this, including higher ticket prices and scheduling of shows on Sunday afternoons.  The promotion decided on a change of scenery, moving from the Bel-Clair Fairgrounds in Belleville to the VFW Hall in Cahokia(a different venue than previous indie shows I had attended in the town).  I don't know how much the promotion makes from video-on-demand and DVD sales, so I couldn't say if that's making up the difference.

As it turned out, this show was no exception as the draw wasn't very good.  The last two shows have fallen on holiday weekends(Easter & Memorial Day) so that could have been a factor.  Despite the low turnout, the fans in attendance were into the show for the most part...just wish that would translate to ticket sales.  It's not like the shows are bad...the matches have been good.  Maybe it's the lack of consistent storylines...I don't think A.C.H. had any actual feuds as champion.  On that note...

Lineup changes:  Promoter Frank Thurman announced a week or two ago that Heavyweight Champion A.C.H. would not be at the show, resulting in a vacating of the title since he hadn't defended it since December.  (A.C.H. wrestled for AAA in Mexico this past weekend.)  His scheduled opponent Louis Lyndon would face the winner of the Takaaki Watanabe vs. Blake Edward Belakis match for the championship.  John Wayne Murdoch & Reed Bentley were absent; they were scheduled to face Team I.O.U.

I was met by a surprise as I walked in the door:  Angelina Love was sitting at the merchandise table along with Davey Richards.  It took a second for it to click in my head that they were a thing...in fact, I believe they got engaged recently.  Hope those crazy kids can make it.

Your ring announcer was Steve Murphy; your referees were Brian Stoltz & Nick Ridenour.

Takaaki Watanabe vs. Mike Outlaw(w/ Magic Man):  Outlaw had been scheduled to team up with a mystery partner against the debuting Forbidden City Warriors, but Magic Man brought out Watanabe as a mystery opponent in the name of friendly competition.  (The Warriors would take the place of Murdoch & Bentley against Team I.O.U. later in the show.)  Watanabe competes for New Japan Pro Wrestling and worked Ring Of Honor's shows this past week; he made one appearance for St. Louis Anarchy, challenging Gerald James for the Heavyweight Title.

They had a solid opening bout; Outlaw fought out of Watanabe's STO and delivered his middle-rope springboard European uppercut.  However, Watanabe avoided the High Noon(top-rope elbowdrop) and hit the STO on the second try for the win in 6:40.  After the match, Blake Belakis clipped Watanabe's knee from behind...Louis Lyndon ran him off before he could do any more damage, but the point had been made:  Belakis wanted to weaken Watanabe before their contenders' match.

"The Brown Bomber" Keon Option vs. "Dirdey" Jake Dirden:  Dirden fist-bumped with the ringsiders, but he started working heel once it became apparent that Option was the more fan-friendly of the two.  I think this was originally Option vs. Justin D'Air; not sure why it was changed.  At any rate, Option gave him a good fight and even escaped the Asiatic Spike setup, but Dirden put him down with a chokeslam in 8:15.

"The Midwest Jackass" Dale Patricks vs. Jack Verville vs. "The Blue-Eyed Devil" Tripp Cassidy, three-way dance:  This was my first look at all three men; I recognized the names of Patricks and Cassidy from IWA Mid-South show listings.  Patricks came out to "YMCA" by the Village People and was the fan favorite of the match.  Had never heard of Verville before he was announced as appearing on this show.  It was your standard-formula three-way match with the two heels taking turns against Patricks...but Patricks fought off Cassidy long enough to eliminate Verville with a cradle piledriver in 8:25.  Tripp was the largest man in the match and tried to control things with his power advantage, but Patricks pulled out the final win with a frog splash off the second rope in 11:32.  Nicely done.

Davey Richards vs. Tony Kozina:  Kozina's entrance music was "I Love" by Tom T. Hall...just go listen to it.  He seemed embarrassed by the music and Davey made fun of him for it.  That inspired the fans to chant "Quack" to rile him up.  Kozina was in full klutz mode as he tripped over the ropes a few times, prompting a few more chuckles from his longtime buddy and opponent for the evening.  Kozina actually took a tumble off the top rope when he stood up to deliver a move and bumped his head on a ceiling tile...I'm sure there's a joke here somewhere about not thinking his head would touch the ceiling.  (HAHAHAcuzhe'sshort.)  Anywho, it was an entertaining match mostly because it was something different than you would expect from these two...thumbs up from this dork in the crowd.  The finish involved Tony slipping off the turnbuckles AGAIN and stumbling backwards into a schoolboy trip from Davey, leading to Davey getting the pinfall by pure accident in 13:39.  Richards shrugged it off and invited Kozina back into the ring for a post-match hug(HUG IT OUT~!)...but some smart-aleck at the sound board cued up "I Love" again and Kozina got upset.  Davey blocked the incoming cheapshot and...kissed him?  Okay, sure, we'll go with that.

Takaaki Watanabe(w/ Magic Man) vs. Blake Edward Belakis:  The winner would face Louis Lyndon later in the show for the vacant HRW Heavyweight Title.  Magic Man seems to hitch his wagon to whoever's convenient, but he does have that Japanese wrestling background.  Belakis obviously targeted the knee that he injured earlier in the show...I liked that they set up the story and clearly positioned him as the heel due to the cheapshot.  Watanabe made the comeback, but Belakis hung onto the referee and delivered a mule kick to the Universal Weak Point(tm).  One rollup with a handful of tights later, Belakis heeled his way to victory in 7:50.

Intermission~!  Water fountains are good.  Got a burger and a can of root beer.  Yes, I keep track of everything.  Shut up.

"The Supercharged Superstar" Bolt Brady(w/ Magic Man) vs. "Diamond Cut" Ace Perry vs. "Never Say Die" Josh Crane:  Two more new faces appeared in this matchup, both familiar names from recent IWA Mid-South shows.  Perry was featured on last week's RAWlternative webshow in a match with Jimmy Jacobs...a bout that was highlighted by a very insistent female fan chanting Perry's name for practically the entire match.  (From what I understand, the fan is autistic and Ace actually took her to her prom...aww.)  Don't think we saw all these guys are capable of doing...this one was relatively short and I hope to see Perry and Crane again sometime.  This was one-fall and Brady pinned Crane after the Tesla Coil(Angel's Wings-into-lungblower) in 6:05.

Team I.O.U.(Nick Iggy & Kerry Awful) vs. The Forbidden City Warriors(Great Akuma & Jun Hado):  Had heard a lot about I.O.U., especially their series with The Hooligans.  They're a fun duo with a Steiner Brothers vibe; Iggy's the straight-up wrestler and Awful is the big fun-loving goofball.  I hadn't seen the Forbidden City Warriors before; a quick Google search tells me that they're central Illinois guys and have competed for Proving Ground Pro.  I had to look up who was who; Akuma was the guy with longer hair and red face paint and Hado was the guy with shorter hair and green paint.  Dug both teams; Iggy & Awful are an entertaing act.  Iggy took the abuse, Awful cleaned house after the hot tag.  Awful got the pin on Akuma after a unique finisher; Iggy dropkicked Akuma in the head as Awful held him in slam position, giving extra oomph to Awful's Michinoku Driver.  That ended the match at the 9:54 mark.

Louis Lyndon vs. Blake Edward Belakis for the vacant Heavyweight Title:  These guys had my favorite match on the previous HRW show with Lyndon winning to earn a title shot.  Belakis has been a consistent presence on these shows and was in the finals of the tournament to crown the original champion.  These two delivered once again; some people just click well with each other.  I'm sure they would have done more in front of a bigger audience, but they put on a good show for the people that were there.  Lyndon hit a killer suicide dive-into-DDT move at one point.  The referee was knocked down by accident and Belakis delivered a low blow, then rolled up Lyndon...for two.  (Should have held the tights, Blake.)  While he didn't get the win, Lyndon was weakened enough that Belakis went on to win after a running palm strike(LIGER~!) in 14:42.

Belakis is your second High Risk Wrestling Champion...but he didn't have long to celebrate as Magic Man confronted him.  That distraction enabled Takaaki Watanabe to enter the ring and catch Belakis by surprise with the STO.  That sent the fans home happy...Belakis stayed down for a while, stumbled out of the ring, and had to literally be dragged back through the curtain by the ringside security people.  Har har.

HRW is going monthly as they're running in June with Tommaso Ciampa and Silas Young announced for the show...we'll see if they do better in their return engagement.  They've finally got a few stories going...and we'll see if the Tag Team Title situation will be addressed.

Six shows down for the month of May, two to go...here are the "dates and deets" for the upcoming weeks, as they say:

Anarchy Wrestling TV #485

-Commentators:  Brett Wolverton & John "The Body" Johnson.
-Agent/Attorney Jeff G. Bailey started the show by entering the building through the front door (noting that he doesn't have many friends in the locker room).  He didn't expect the sympathetic applause from the fans after he took the piledriver from B.J. Hancock...he was hurt, but he wouldn't give Stephen Platinum the satisfaction of putting him out of wrestling.  Bailey vowed to paint the walls of the Church Of Southern Wrestling with Platinum's blood...and Miss Rachael's blood would make a good second coat.  Bailey told Platinum that he's the wrong guy to mess with...the Internet where he spends so much of his time is a beautiful place.  "I know where you live!  I know where your wife works!  And I know where your children go to school!  Now I'm not threatening your wife or children, but accidents do happen, Stephen!"  (You do NOT out-evil Jeff G. Bailey...)
-The Washington Bullets(Jon & Trey Williams) d. The Beardos(Chris Spectra & Wade Adams) when Trey pinned Adams after the Marion Berry(backcracker by Jon followed by Diamond Cutter by Trey) (4:48).
-"The Modern Classic" B.J. Hancock(w/ Miss Rachael & Lars Manderson) d. "Hit For Hire" Bobby Moore; Manderson distracted the referee as Rachael hit Moore in the midsection with Jerry Palmer's stolen axhandle, allowing Hancock to finish with the piledriver (joined in progress; 9:15 aired).
-"The Encore" Kevin Blue(w/ Miss Rachael) d. Jacob Ashworth to retain the T.V. Title after Brian Blaze interfered, leading to Blue winning after a corner boot (8:01).  Blue & Blaze attacked Ashworth after the match until Shadow Jackson ran them off.
-Shadow Jackson fought Brian Blaze to a double countout (3:31).
-Ironman Challenge:  "The Priest Of Punishment" Mikael Judas d. Lars Manderson(w/ Miss Rachael); B.J. Hancock attempted to interfere but Bobby Moore stopped him, leading to Judas winning with the half-crab (9:57).

-Blake Edward Belakis d. Takaaki Watanabe(w/ Magic Man) to advance to the Heavyweight Title match later in the night.  Belakis targeted Watanabe's injured knee, but it took a mule kick to the groin and a rollup with a handful of tights for Belakis to score the victory (7:50).

Louis Lyndon to win the vacant Heavyweight Title (previous champion A.C.H. hadn't appeared for HRW since December).  The referee was knocked down and didn't see Belakis tapping out to Lyndon's dragon sleeper.  Belakis tried for the same low blow/rollup combo as he did in his match with Watanabe, but only got a two-count.  Lyndon kept fighting, but Belakis was able to get the win after a running palm strike (14:42).  Belakis celebrated with his newly-won championship, but Magic Man distracted him and Watanabe entered the ring to drop Belakis with the STO.

Comedy Part 569: Time Out, Comedy In

Location:  Time Out Sports Bar & Grill
Emcee:  Josh Funneman
After:  Josh Funneman
Before:  Amber Klear

I did a show at this venue a few years ago, but I got more time at this one since there were only three comedians.  I did a fifteen-minute set and dusted off several jokes that I hadn't done in a long time...want to see how much I can expand the repertoire in case I'm in a position to get bigger opportunities.  Want to organize my jokes so I can make better transitions and remember everything...would rather not go to my notes as often as I did on this show.  It was a paid gig, which is always a plus...woo.  Next up for me:  Planning to go to the Westport Funny Bone on Tuesday night for the first time in a while, then Hey Guys Comedy on Wednesday.  See you at the shows!

-Backstage:  Cueto met with The Crew in his office about their main-event ladder match...he told them to make a sacrifice to the gods of his temple.  If that didn't happen, it would anger him AND the gods...and he knew someone(Matanza) who would have no problem "sacrificing" somebody.
-El Texano Jr. d. "The Golden Warrior" DelAvar Daivari by DQ when Big Rycklon Stephens attacked Texano (3:53).  Daivari and Ryck(seemingly paid off by Daivari) double-teamed Texano and Ryck forced the ref to make a three-count as Daivari made a pin cover.
-Backstage:  Cueto was visited by Catrina Perez...she informed him that Mil Muertes was coming back.  Cueto booked Muertes against Fenix for next week's show and Catrina said she wanted a "death match".
-Elsewhere:  Black Lotus began her journey back to the temple...and Aztec Dragon asked a familiar face to keep an eye on her:  Chavo Guerrero Jr.
-Son Of Havoc, Angélico, & Ivelisse Velez d. The Crew(Cortez Castro, Mr. Cisco, & Bael) in a ladder match to retain the Trios Titles when Ivelisse(despite her ankle injury) retrieved the belts from above the ring (13:42).  At one point, Angélico did an insane flying dropkick from the roof of Cueto's office to knock Castro off the ladder!

WWE Smackdown

-Commentators:  Tom Phillips, Jerry Lawler, & Byron Saxton.
-The Lucha Dragons(Sin Cara & Kalisto) won a four-corner match with Antonio Cesaro & Tyson Kidd(w/ Natalya Neidhart), The Ascension(Konnor O'Brian & Rick Viktor), and Los Matadores(Fernando & Diego)(w/ El Torito) when Kalisto pinned Diego by jumping backwards off the second rope into a blind rana pin (6:20 aired).  Xavier Woods(w/ Tag Team Champions Big E Langston & Kofi Kingston) and Titus O'Neil(w/ Darren Young) did commentary.
-Dolph Ziggler d. King Wade "Bad News" Barrett with the Zigzag (4:39 aired).  Lana Perry applauded Ziggler's win from the stage.
-"R-Truth" Ron Killings d. Stardust via Lie Detector(Paydirt) (3:29).
-The Meta Powers("Macho Mandow" Damien Sandow & "Axelmania" Curtis Axel) d. Adam Rose & Heath Slater(w/ Rosa Mendes) when Axel pinned Slater after the Legdrop O' Doom (3:21).
-Dean Ambrose d. Bray Wyatt; Jamie Knoble & Joey Mercury interfered, followed by WWE Champion Seth Rollins.  That brought out Roman Reigns to even things up...in the chaos, Reigns stunned Wyatt with the Superman Punch and Ambrose won after the Dirty Deeds v2.0(double-underhook DDT) (8:29 aired).

WWE NXT Takeover: Unstoppable

-Commentators:  Rich Brennan, Byron Saxton, & Corey Graves.
-Earlier today:  Hideo Itami was injured in the parking lot by an unknown attacker, turning the scheduled triple threat contenders' match into a singles bout.
-Finn Bálor d. Tyler Breeze with the Coup De Grace(top-rope double-stomp) (11:04).
-Charlotte Flair & Bayley Rose d. Emma Tayla & Dana Brooke when Charlotte pinned Emma after the Natural Selection(low-flying somersault cutter) (6:51).
-Baron Corbin d. Rhyno with the End Of Days(short-arm Blackhole Slam into mid-air Flatliner) (7:13).
-Wesley Blake & Buddy Murphy d. Enzo Amore & "Big Cass" Colin Cassady(w/ Carmella Van Damme) to retain the NXT Tag Team Titles; Alexa Bliss attacked Carmella and then crotched Enzo on the top rope, allowing Blake to score the pin (8:53).
-"The Boss" Sasha Banks d. Becky Lynch with the Bank Statement(modified Crippler Crossface) to retain the NXT Women's Title (15:28).
-Kevin Owens d. Sami Zayn to retain the NXT Title when he delivered a pop-up powerbomb into the edge of the ring apron and the referee stopped the match (no closing bell; about 10:00).  Owens continued his assault as referees and trainers attempted to check on Zayn's condition.  General Manager S. William Regal tried to stop him personally but Owens headbutted him out of the ring.  Owens brought in a chair to finish the job...but he was interrupted by SAMOA JOE~!  Owens and Joe had a mid-ring staredown until Owens backed down...

After:  Aaron Sawyer
Before:  Greg Buchek

It was a night where everyone made the list, so I got to perform...woo.  I went up fairly early and tried to focus on new material for the most part.  Most of my productivity on this night was actually on the writing side; I worked on a few new ideas and figured out ways to connect jokes to each other.  I had a decent set, all things considered...some things went over better than others, but it's all a work in progress.  Can I BE any more vague?  Well, you should come to the shows and hear the jokes for yourselves...bwahahaha.  I am performing at the Time Out Bar & Grill in Troy, Illinois on Saturday at 9:00 along with Josh Funneman and Amber Klear...no cover charge, so I hope to see you there!

SICW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling show at the Community Center in East Carondelet, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

First off, best wishes to Dan Walsh as he has decided to retire from the ring due to concussion issues.  I met Dan in the GCW days and he was always an entertaning guy in and out of the ring.  I got started on the comedy thing after going to a few of his open-mic night performances at the Westport Funny Bone...so yeah, that whole thing is his fault.  I also got an interesting story out of the time he randomly chopped me at a bar show at Lloyd & Harry's.  Long story short, it knocked the wind out of me but it was still kinda cool.  #mark

This would be classified as SICW's "big show of the year" as May is the anniversary of the premiere of Wrestling At The Chase.  Several special guests were scheduled to appear, but Mike McGuirk was not in attendance with no explanation given.  Unfortunately Larry Matysik was unable to attend the show, but his wife Pat was in the house.  Understandably, it was a packed house for the big event.

Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus; your referees were Jay King & Denny Thomas.

Promoter Herb Simmons started the show by acknowledging Barbara Goodish(wife of the late King Kong/Bruiser Brody) and Pat Matysik at ringside, as well as former AWA announcer Mick Karch.

"Dirdey" Jake Dirden, Bobby D, & "Dead Sexy" Daniel Gunner vs. "The Elitist" Brandon Espinosa, "Volatile" Curtis Wylde, & Bubba Troll(w/ Wyldefyre):  Hello, match-to-get-as-many-people-as-possible-on-the-show.  It was tough to follow the action on this night with so many people in the building...will probably notice a few more details when I do the commentary for the TV show.  Chaos erupted at the end with everyone fighting, then Wyldefyre tripped her own man by mistake after Bobby D reversed an Irish whip into the ropes.  Bobby D finished off Wylde with a Pedigree in 8:59.

Big Jim Hoffarth vs. Ax Allwardt:  Ax was disqualified against Big Jim in March for using his chain as a weapon, then these two were on opposite sides of last month's mixed tag match that ended in a double DQ.  At some point in the match, Hoffarth's arm or shoulder was injured; I didn't see if Ax did something to the arm or if it was just a freak thing.  Either way, Ax took over from there and the referee actually stopped the match due to the injury in 7:19.  The finish was a bit confusing as people wondered if Hoffarth had been disqualified for pushing the referee(he was trying to convince him to let the fight continue).  Ax wasn't done as he assaulted Hoffarth with his chain after the bell...but once Ax had left the ring area, Hoffarth vowed to get revenge on him.  (EDIT:  Hoffarth went for a clothesline on the floor and accidentally hit the ringpost when Ax moved, causing the initial injury.)

"The Old School Warrior" Chaz Wesson vs. Waco:  Well, something had to be a short segment on this loaded show.  Dropkick, powerslam, and cross-bodyblock off the top rope ended Waco's night in short order in 1:03.  Thanks for coming.

"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson(w/ Big Daddy) vs. Barackus:  This was Barackus' SICW debut but he was up against a familiar opponent.  Big Daddy was notably absent for the April shows but was back for this event; he was in Gary's corner, but he wasn't at ringside for Daniel Eads' match.  Take that for whatever it's worth.  The big man dominated the veteran, but Gary made the comeback until being cut off by a huge Samoan Drop.  Barackus took too much time going for the pin and made an arrogant cover when he did; that allowed Gary to crucifix him for the pinfall in 5:18.

Intermission numero uno~!  I'm getting to the point in my life where soda should be avoided, so I went with bottled water for the night.  Also picked up a cheeseburger...tremendous.

Herb did a brief interview segment with Stan "The Lariat" Hansen(one of Brody's old tag partners) and Barbara Goodish regarding the night's main event:  The Bruiser Brody Memorial Battle Royal.  Briefly chatted with Hansen after the show...he was a nice guy.  I'll admit to not being as familiar with Hansen's work as I would like to be, but the LARIATOOOOO~! was his trademark for a reason.

Paloma Starr vs. "Queen Of Chaos" Lucy Mendez:  These two crossed paths in the aforementioned mixed tag match in April, resulting in a catfight and double DQ; this time around, there were no male tag partners to hold them back.  There was a rough spot or two, but it was a solid matchup for the most part; they've faced each other a few times in the past month or so.  Lucy tends to get a mixed reaction as a heel since guys don't want to boo the good-looking gal...yeah, I know, five hundred feet means five hundred feet.  Anywho, Lucy got the clean win with a hanging DDT in 8:42.

Keith Smith Jr. vs. "Ironman" Ken Kasa(w/ Travis Cook):  This match had a couple of intersecting stories.  On one side, Keith Jr. was working toward his first one-on-one victory.  On the other side, Kasa seemed to be falling out of favor with Cook's Organization since losing the Classic Title; Travis' focus seemed to have shifted to his other charges, particularly Chris Hargas.  Kasa pinned Keith Jr. in last month's tag match, as seen on this week's episode of SICW Wrestling Explosion (expertly called by Drew Abbenhaus and yours truly *cheap plug*).  In a nice touch, Kasa nailed the John Wu Dropkick right out of the gate(that's how he won last month, Maggle!)...but he didn't go to the pin, opting to make the young punk suffer a bit longer.  It was the classic blueprint of the veteran trying to humiliate the rookie, but getting too cocky and making mistakes that allowed the young guy to fight back.  Chaz Wesson came out to root for his tag team partner and Travis got up on the ring apron to protest something or other.  However, that inadvertently distracted his own man who was wondering what the hell he was doing...that gave Keith Jr. the opening for a football-style leg dive.  In a nod to his father's favored finishing maneuver, Keith Jr. locked on the figure-four in the middle of the ring...and with nowhere to go, Kasa finally had to tap out in 10:45!

Things got really interesting after the bell as the Kasa/Cook interaction escalated to a full-blown argument.  Travis berated his charge for losing and it got to the point where Kasa shoved him away.  Cook brought out a chain and went for a cheapshot, but Kasa saw it coming and backed him into the corner.  However, before he could lower the boom, Hargas attacked his now-former friend from behind with a knee clip...ladies and gentlemen, we have a face turn.  The two beat down Kasa with Travis putting the chain to good use...the Travis Cook Organization was thus downsized as Hargas locked Kasa in an STF as Travis put the badmouth on him.

"The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz & Ron Powers vs. Attila Khan & "The Icon" Chris Hargas(w/ Travis Cook):  Hargas was subbing for Bull Bronson.  Not sure if the "King Of Chaos" nickname is still in effect since Ricky's a fan favorite again.  Haven't been sure whether to acknowledge Ricky's connection to Lucy on commentary, especially since she uses the "QUEEN Of Chaos" nickname...however, that alliance never existed on Earth-SICW so I've opted against it.  (How did no one make the "I Love Lucy" reference with regards to Ricky & Lucy?  Oh yeah, I'm old.)  The history between Cruz & Powers is well-documented(some dork did a whole column on Missouri Wrestling Revival about it), but they were on the same page on this night.  Bonzo gonzo at the end and the referee's attention was elsewhere, so KHAAAAAN~! got out his patented whatever-the-heck-his-international-object-of-choice-is and jabbed Ricky in the midsection, then in the throat.  That was enough for him to get the tainted pinfall in 8:11.

Intermission numero dos...tough to get to the restrooms when the building is that crowded.  There was also quite a gathering outside the door during intermissions as people got fresh air or took smoke breaks.

Flash Flanagan vs. "The Man Of Tomorrow" Daniel Eads for the Classic Title:  Flanagan beat down Eads last fall to set up his series with then-champion Heath Hatton, resulting in Flash cheating Hatton out of the belt.  With Heath still out of action due to injuries, Eads worked his way up the ladder for a shot at the champ, resulting in this matchup.  It's odd how the title has been overshadowed by other things in the past year or so, plus it's changed hands a lot more frequently in that time.  Eads gave the titleholder a run for his money, but Flanagan put him away with a double-stomp from the top rope with Eads hung upside-down in the corner...the champ retained in 12:52.

Bruiser Brody Memorial Battle Royal:  The main event featured everyone on the card except Flanagan and Eads, Kasa(injured from the earlier attack), Bobby D(because...reasons...), and the ladies.  It was tough to keep track of everything in the crowded ring, so I didn't always catch who did the eliminating.  Gunner was out first, followed by Barackus(think it was Dirden that got him out) and Wylde.  Powers was surprisingly eliminated, but I wouldn't find out until later that it happened due to Travis Cook low-bridging him by pulling down the top rope.  Dirden took himself and Troll out of the match with a Cactus Clothesline.  Keith Jr. was gone next, then longtime rivals Jackson & Espinosa eliminated each other.  Waco was the next one gone...but at this point, Director Of Affairs Cowboy Bob Orton announced that Powers had been illegally eliminated by Travis Cook and could re-enter the match.  Wesson went out, then Cruz eliminated Khan only to be pulled to the floor by the Mongolian.  It came down to Powers and Hargas, but Powers low-bridged Hargas out of the ring(IRONY~!) and the Brody protege won the battle royal in 8:00!

(EDIT:  Eliminations were:  Gunner by Troll, Barackus by Dirden, Wylde by Cruz, Powers illegally by Travis Cook, Dirden/Troll eliminated each other, Keith Jr. by Hargas, Jackson/Espinosa eliminated each other, Waco by Chaz, Ax by Chaz, Chaz pulled out by Ax, Khan by Cruz, Cruz pulled out by Khan, Hargas by Powers.)

Stan Hansen and Barbara Goodish presented Powers with the trophy, but Herb had some good news/bad news for him:  He had made a decision to settle the Red River Jack situation once and for all.  (I had wondered if R.R.J. would be a late entry into the battle royal after Powers was eliminated, actually...)  At the June show, it would be Ron Powers teaming up with Red River Jack against two members of the Travis Cook Organization.  The plot thickens...Powers seemed to be caught off-guard by that announcement, but said he and the masked man would come out on top at that show.

At any rate, that was my fifth independent wrestling show of the month with three more to go...here's how the next few weeks look:

-Sunday 5/24:  High Risk Wrestling in Cahokia, IL (NOTE: A.C.H. is wrestling in Mexico, so the Heavyweight Title has been vacated; Louis Lyndon will wrestle the winner of the Takaaki Watanabe vs. Blake Belakis match to crown a new champion.)
-Saturday 5/30:  World League Wrestling in Troy, MO
-Sunday 5/31:  Wrestling Invades America in Swansea, IL
-Friday 6/5:  Ring Of Honor in Collinsville, IL

Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

P.S. We are all marks.
