Comedy Part 639: One More For 2015

Location:  Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee:  Gary Schultz
After:  Michael Carroll
Before:  Josh Bertels

Thanks to the holiday season, Hey Guys had its best open-mic attendance to date with 91 people in the audience!  A couple of St. Louis comics were at the show since the Valley Park Funny Bone's open-mic was cancelled due to area flooding...eep.  I went up early and did okay, though I'm still figuring out how to combine two jokes with similar premises.  At any rate, the show was fun...and that'll just about do it for my comedic year of 2015.  (Quick programming note:  The open-mic shows at Hey Guys Comedy will be every Thursday starting next week on January 7th!)  By my count, I had 103 comedy performances in this calendar year...and I hope to do even more in 2016!

Comedy Part 638: Home Stretch

Location:  Westport Funny Bone
Emcee:  Dan Walsh
After:  Shane Lawler
Before:  Larry Greene

Good to make the list again, especially with a packed house on open-mic night.  The set got off to an awkward start(yes, more awkward than usual) as Dan tripped over the microphone cord on the way off stage...whoops.  I did okay, though my attempt to combine a newer joke with an older one didn't go over so well.  I recovered from that and did a decent job, though I would have liked to do more new material.  Perhaps I will do that tomorrow night at Hey Guys Comedy in Fairview Heights, which will likely be my last comedy show of 2015...hope to see you there!

Comedy Part 637: Heading Into The Holidays

Location:  Valley Park Funny Bone
Emcee:  Matt Rose
After:  Tim Convy
Before:  Jack Schurk

It was another strong turnout for a Funny Bone open-mic this week...was thankful to have made the list.  I now have another good line that fits into my "set the tone" material in the early part of my set; it has the added bonus of a local reference("Where'd you go to high school?").  I have a couple of newer bits that could use some work, but I didn't get to them this week.  Longer bits are tough to fit into open-mic sets since they use up a good chunk of your time...joke-pacing is also tricky since you can subconsciously rush through your jokes when the clock is on your mind.  I've had to learn over time to let the laughs play out instead of "stepping" on them with the next line.  I had another really strong set...that makes four times I've performed in the last five days.  Hope my family's not expecting me to be TOO wacky at the Christmas get-togethers...

WWE Smackdown

-Commentators:  Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, & Booker T.
-The New Day(Big E Langston & Kofi Kingston)(w/ Xavier Woods) d. The Lucha Dragons(Sin Cara & Kalisto) to retain the Tag Team Titles; Big E pinned Sin Cara after catching him in mid-Asai moonsault to deliver the Big Ending (9:52 aired).
-The Wyatt Family(Bray Wyatt, Braun Strowman, Luke Harper, & Erick Rowan) d. Kane, Ryback, & The Dudley Boys(Buh-Buh Ray & D-Von) when Wyatt pinned Buh-Buh after the Sister Abigail (8:42 aired).
-U.S. Champion Alberto Del Rio & Alexander Rusev(w/ Sheamus O'Shaunessy & King Wade "Bad News" Barrett) d. Jimmy & Jey Uso when Del Rio pinned Jey after the Tree Of Woe double-stomp off the top rope (6:58 aired).  WWE Champion Roman Reigns saved the Usos from a post-match attack.
-Adrian Neville & Titus O'Neil(w/ Santino Marella) d. The Ascension(Konnor O'Brian & Rick Viktor)(w/ Stardust) when Neville pinned Viktor after the Red Arrow(corkscrew shooting star press) (3:08).
-Women's Champion Charlotte Flair d. Brie Bella(non-title) with the Figure-Eight Leglock(bridging figure-four) (3:26); Becky Lynch did commentary and Team B.A.D.(Sasha Banks, Naomi Night, & Tamina Snuka) harassed her at one point, but Charlotte went for the win instead of helping her friend.
-Dean Ambrose won a triple threat match with Kevin Owens and Dolph Ziggler to retain the Intercontinental Title when he pinned Ziggler after the Dirty Deeds v2.0(double-underhook DDT) (10:28 aired).

Comedy Part 636: Hindsight Is 2020

Location:  Westport Funny Bone
Emcee:  Tim Convy
After:  Andrew Topping
Before:  Larry Greene

The open-mic crowds are usually a lot better on holiday weeks like Thanksgiving and Christmas, so this was a good night to make the list.  I tried several new jokes...one needs work, the other may have come off better on Twitter in text form.  Live and learn, as they say.  Thankfully, my other jokes went pretty well...it was a fun show all around.  Next up for me:  Valley Park Funny Bone tomorrow night!

Saturday 1/3 in Fenton, MO:
-Executive Director Mark Bland started the show by interviewing new Heavyweight Champion Mike Outlaw, but they were quickly interrupted by Travis Cook and his stable(Ken Kasa & The Black Hand Warriors en masse). -High Level Enterprise(Jack Gamble & Jon Webb) d. Mauler McDarby & "Risky Business" Everett Connors(subbing for the absent Shawn Santel). -Brandon Espinosa(w/ Lucy Mendez) d. Dustin Bozworth; Lucy distracted Bozworth and Espinosa knocked him out with a foreign object for the tainted victory (9:16). Espinosa sought to do some post-match damage, but "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz hit the ring to confront him. Lucy went for a low blow from behind, but Ricky blocked the move and confronted her...leading to Espinosa hitting Cruz from behind. However, Bozworth recovered in time to clear Espinosa out of the ring; after that, Ricky raised Bozworth's hand.
-"The Bloodthirsty Vixen" Marriah Moreno d. Lucy Mendez; Lucy tried to cheat with the same foreign object that Espinosa used earlier, but the referee caught her in the act and stopped her. Moreno took advantage with a Northern Lights Bomb for the upset win (9:34).
-The Black Hand Warriors(Michael Magnuson, Dave DeLorean, & Jayden Fenix)(w/ Travis Cook) d. Tag Team Champion Jackal & The Bumrush Brothers("The Don Mega" Shorty Biggs & Outtkast). DeLorean got the pinfall on Outtkast after Magnuson and Fenix delivered a spike Tombstone (19:53).
-Mike Outlaw d. "Ironman" Ken Kasa(w/ Travis Cook) to retain the Heavyweight Title. Cook tripped Outlaw on the top rope behind the referee's back, allowing Kasa to set up Outlaw for a Razor's Edge-style powerbomb. However, he took too long before delivering the move and Outlaw escaped into a sunset flip pin (13:45). After the match, Travis hit Outlaw from behind with his cane and The Black Hand Warriors ran out to gang-attack the champion. Keon Option and Brandon Aarons ran in to help but the numbers were in the favor of the Travis Cook Organization; that allowed Travis to stretch out Outlaw's arm as Kasa delivered a devastating flying knee from the top rope. Dirdey Aggression("Dirdey" Jake Dirden & Jackal) in a handicap match to win the Tag Team Titles; the match was changed due to a legal injunction filed by Cook, leaving Guns & Beer(Bo Gott & Duke Cornell) off the card. Jackal took a beating for most of the match...but when Dirden finally got the tag, he suddenly turned on Jackal and forcibly tagged him back into the ring. -Jackal d. "Dirdey" Jake Dirden in an I Quit Match; Jackal brought out a shopping cart full of weapons for use in the matchup. Dirden tried to use a metal spike to attack Jackal, but Jackal retaliated with tongs to the groin region.
