WWE Raw

-Commentators:  Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, & John Bradshaw Layfield.
-Triple H, Stephanie McMahon-Helmesly, and Kane started the show by bringing out Seth Rollins(w/ Jamie Knoble & Joey Mercury); Rollins said he had his sights set on John Cena in the night's main event.  Randy Orton came out, still upset about taking an advanced curbstomp last week, and the Authority members in the ring had to keep them separated.  HHH attempted to talk him down, but RKOOUTTANOWHERE~! on Rollins and only then did Orton decide to leave.
-Goldust & Stardust d. The Big Show & Mark Henry to retain the Tag Team Titles; Henry took offense to Show tagging himself into the match on a few occasions.  Show PUNCHed Stardust, but Henry turned on his partner with the World's Strongest Slam and put Stardust on top for the pin.  Henry 'Slammed Show two more times after the match and hit him with a big splash on top of that.
-Women's Champion A.J. Lee d. Alicia Fox(non-title); Paige Knight was on commentary and got up to yell at Alicia at one point, leading to A.J. getting the rollup pin.  Paige acted apologetic at first, but then snapped and beat the hell out of Alicia after the match.  (Paige said she blamed Alicia for her loss last night since Alicia threw her back in the ring before she had recovered from a bad fall on the arena floor.)
-Jimmy & Jey Uso d. Mike Mizanin & Damien Sandow; the Usos switched places behind the referee's back and Jey small-packaged Miz for the pin.
-Ryback d. Bo Dallas after the Shellshock.
-Dean Ambrose vs. Antonio Cesaro never started as Ambrose threatened Bray Wyatt, then beat down Cesaro with the microphone.  Wyatt responded from the TitanTron.
-Nikki Bella(w/ Brie Bella) d. Naomi Night with the Rack Attack(torture-rack drop); Brie tripped up Naomi at one point to allow Nikki to get in a cheapshot, leading to the finish.
-Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler d. Kane(non-title) when he escaped a chokeslam attempt by going up and over into a sunset flip for the pin.  Seth Rollins(w/ Knoble & Mercury) attacked Ziggler after the match but John Cena made the save.
-John Cena d. Seth Rollins(w/ Jamie Knoble & Joey Mercury) by DQ when Kane broke up the STF.  Dolph Ziggler ran in to help Cena against the Authority members, but then the locker room emptied and everyone brawled.  The Authority members got away and watched the fight from the stage; the show ended with Cena hitting F-Us on Heath Slater and Bo Dallas.

-C.B. Suave d. "The Encore" Kevin Blue with the Moneymaker(flippy neckbreaker) (6:44 aired).
-William Huckaby & Joe Black d. Nemesis in a handicap match; Nemesis said Shadow Jackson had other business to attend to.  The numbers caught up to Nemesis as Huckaby and Black hit stereo clotheslines from the front and back, allowing Huckaby to get the pin (6:03).
-Joey Rhymer(w/ Miss Rachael) d. Jeremy Foster to retain the Young Lions' Title.  Foster initially got the pin after a flying knee strike, but the referee waved it off when he saw Rhymer's foot on the bottom rope(where Rachael had put it).  Rhymer went on to win after a springboard knee trembler (joined in progress; 3:51 aired).
-The Washington Bullets(Jon & Trey Williams) d. "The Priest Of Punishment" Mikael Judas & "Wrestling's Most Dangerous Weapon" Geter by countout; Agent/Attorney Jeff G. Bailey blinded Judas with powder while he was outside the ring and Judas was unable to beat the ten-count (8:28 aired).
-"The Modern Classic" B.J. Hancock(w/ Miss Rachael) d. "The Lethal Dose" Stryknyn to retain the Heavyweight Title.  Billy Buck stopped Lars Manderson from interfering, but Joey Rhymer springboarded into the ring only to get speared in mid-air by Stryknyn.  Hancock came out top of a counterwrestling sequence to hit the piledriver for the win (10:39 aired).

PWCS Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Pro Wrestling Championship Series show at the YMCA in Granite City, Illinois.

My drive to the show was eventful by itself; Highway 64 was down to one lane for a good stretch and then I was stopped by a train for a minute or so. That added about 15-20 minutes to my usual trip to Granite City, but at least I made it to the show on time. The turnout was decent for the smaller venue and the fans were into the show.

Starting scoreboard: Ego Busters 5-1, Blacklist 3-3, Team Anarchy 2-4, Resurgence 2-4. The top two teams would meet in the team championship match at the next show on January 10th...the Ego Busters had a comfortable lead, but an 0-3 showing on this night could have potentially pushed them out of the running. Oddly, all of the team matches on this night were Ego Busters vs. Team Anarchy and Blacklist vs. Resurgence; not sure if there was an explanation for that setup on one of the YouTube shows.

I didn't know the ring announcer's name; your referees were Thomas Ninos(?), Jay King, and Brian Stoltz.  (EDIT: Thomas Munos.)

For the record, I attempted to time the matches for myself...but I whiffed on the start button during the third bout, so that's why I didn't have a precise time on that one.

Sir Isaac vs. Code Name-Dangerous Deveroux: Isaac was a late replacement for Zakk Sawyers who had another booking. The full bodysuit and mask make it difficult to deduce Deveroux's identity, so I couldn't say if it's someone totally new or an established person in an alternate character. Deveroux targeted Isaac's leg and Isaac did a good job of selling the injury for the duration of the bout. It can be easy to ignore limb work during the comeback phase of a matchup and chalk it up to adrenaline, but that can invalidate the whole segment of a match when the heel is in control. Deveroux won after blocking a powerbomb, rolling up Isaac with a handful of tights in 5:53.

Outtkast(Blacklist) vs. "Risky Business" Everett Connors(Resurgence): Blacklist/Resurgence was essentially face-vs.-face, something that can be a tough order of business. Connors was the obvious underdog against the more experienced Outtkast, but he still had a good showing in this one. Jojo Bravo occasionally popped out of the entranceway to cheerlead for his Blacklist teammate, but the fan support was somewhat divided. Outtkast won with the Case Study in 6:54...but the members of the Ego Busters attacked Outtkast after the match, then dished out a beating on Makaze and Jojo when they tried to intervene. Greg Jovi made it clear that they were targeting their nearest competitors on the scoreboard and attempting to solidify their lead. (Blacklist 4-3, Resurgence 2-5)

Jeff Gant vs. "The Money" Matt Cage vs. "The Alternative" Brandon Gallagher: Gant competes for Anarchy Championship Wrestling in Texas and has appeared for St. Louis Anarchy a few times; he was a late addition to the scheduled Cage-Gallagher "free agent showcase". As it turned out, this made him the underdog face against two heels. It went about eight minutes or so, ending with Evan Gelistico & Pierre Abernathy attacking everyone for the Sportz Entertainment Finish(err, no-contest). The deal was that Davey Vega set the roster for Team Anarchy on this night and that ticked off Pierre(allegedly the team captain) and his partner Gelistico. They voiced their displeasure with being left off the card and Pierre said that Vega couldn't lead the team better than he could... (EDIT: YouTube video of the match is up, so I got the match time as 8:41.)

"The Ace Of Anarchy" Davey Vega(Team Anarchy) vs. Brandon Espinosa(w/ Greg Jovi)(Ego Busters): This was one of the matches I was particularly looking forward to; I'm pretty sure it was their first one-on-one meeting. Evan and Pierre sat with the ring announcer/video commentator to watch their stablemate's match...looking back at the record book, Vega was 1-0 in PWCS(prior to this bout) while Pierre is 0-2 and Evan is 0-1. On the other side of things, Espy was 2-0 going into this matchup. As expected, they had a really good matchup with a lot of near-falls for each man. Vega won with a brainbuster onto the knee in 10:26. (Team Anarchy 3-4, Ego Busters 5-2)

They unveiled the team championship trophy in an in-ring segment with Jay Beaman(host of their YouTube show) and Greg Jovi. Jovi is the real-life promoter of PWCS(explaining his presence) but is also the heel manager of the Ego Busters, so he stuck with the character and vowed that his team would bring home the trophy. After that, he hit Beaman with a low blow for the hell of it.

The Viking War Party("The American Viking" Alexandre Rudolph & "The Littlest Viking" Jake Parnell)(Team Anarchy) vs. Gary Jay & "Walking Reality" Dan Walsh(w/ Greg Jovi)(Ego Busters): This was the PWCS debut for the Vikings and they did their usual chair-throwing entrance...gotta watch out in a confined space like this particular venue. They even tried to roll Hardcore Andy(acting as ringside security) into the ring at one point...heh. Jovi was a bit more actively involved than usual; at one point, he pulled the referee out of the ring to stop a potential pin after Parnell hit a frog splash on Walsh. That seemed to indicate the Ego Busters stealing a win and they nearly did so, but the Vikings came back and Parnell pinned Walsh after a chokebreaker/second-rope double-stomp combo in 14:09. (Team Anarchy 4-4, Ego Busters 5-3)

"Dirdey" Jake Dirden(Resurgence) vs. Jojo Bravo(w/ Outtkast)(Blacklist): Hello, David vs. Goliath formula. Dirden tends to gravitate toward the subtle heel role in a face/face match with a smaller opponent, as he did here. This happened despite a heelish move on the part of the Blacklist: Jojo's "unity exercise" on this night consisted of Outtkast attempting a pre-match attack and being thrown out of the ring. Outtkast didn't get actively involved once the bell rang; Jojo's great in the underdog role and was very entertaining in his offensive flurries. Bravo survived several of Dirden's big moves, including a chokeslam. However, he overstepped his bounds by thinking he could hit the Samurai Driver(WA-SHING~!) on the big man; Dirden grabbed him in the Asiatic Spike and that was all she wrote in 9:21. SPORTSMANSHIP~! ensued after the match. (Resurgence 3-5, Blacklist 4-4)

Makaze(Blacklist) vs. Steven Kennedy(Resurgence): The Resurgence team was on the bubble here and needed a minor miracle to reach the championship round. Makaze entered the match with a limp after the earlier attack by the Ego Busters. Kennedy started off technical, but he eventually went after the leg due to the stakes involved in the matchup. I guess that made Kennedy the heel by default, but it was understandable given the circumstances. Makaze won with the Blizzard Suplex out of nowhere(Northern Lights suplex with a leg hook like a Perfectplex) in 9:42 and eliminated the Resurgence team from contention in the process. Kennedy said he wasn't happy about his 1-2 record in PWCS, but congratulated Makaze and said he'll do better the next time around. (Blacklist 5-4, Resurgence 3-6)

Mat Fitchett(Team Anarchy) vs. Christian Rose(w/ Greg Jovi)(Ego Busters): I noted that a Fitchett win would result in a three-way tie for first with all three remaining stables having 5-4 records. I wasn't entirely clear on how the championship teams would be decided in that case, but PWCS posted a Facebook blog about the different situations that could end the season. From my understanding, the Ego Busters would have been eliminated due to the stables' season records against each other; that put the previous frontrunners in a position to go 0-3 for the night and slide out of contention as a result.

Fitchett and Rose crossed paths in St. Louis Anarchy recently; there's SOME angle crossover from that promotion as Pierre assembled his team from their roster. Unfortunately, internal conflict meant that they weren't quite as successful as they would have liked. For his part, Rose was initially a member of the Blacklist stable, but was said to have taken a payoff from the Ego Busters to abandon his team at the first show. Rose was scheduled to team with Outtkast against Pierre and Alex Castle at Stage One, but Outtkast had to fight alone in a handicap situation (taking advantage of miscommunication to get a flash pin).

At any rate, these guys had a really good matchup. Still not sure about Fitchett's overall status as he simply promised to complete the season for PWCS and has been wrestling for promotions elsewhere in the country. Evan and Pierre tried to interfere against their own stablemate but Vega put a stop to it before they could do any damage. However, it was Jovi's involvement that made the difference as he distracted the referee, allowing Rose to get in a mule kick to the Universal Weak Point. That allowed Rose to hit his Go 2 Sleep variant(Ride The Lightning) for the win in 11:48. (Ego Busters 6-3, Team Anarchy 4-5)

Long story short, the championship finale will be Blacklist vs. Ego Busters in an eight-man elimination tag match on January 10th. Makaze/Outtkast/Jojo are the mainstays for Blacklist, but will the fourth member be Nate Redwing or someone else? The Ego Busters seem set as Gary Jay/Walsh/Rose/Espinosa, but they could also use Jeremy Wyatt...decisions, decisions.

Dynamo Pro Wrestling is next on the agenda; unfortunately, the promotion was the victim of a major theft recently as their ring, trailer, and guardrails were stolen. Their remnants were reportedly "permanently mangled and destroyed for scrap". Not sure what I could say beyond the obvious: It sucks and hopefully the person or people responsible are brought to justice.

The rest of the year looks like this:

-Saturday 11/8: MMWA in St. Louis, MO

-Classic Champion Heath Hatton & "The Man Of Tomorrow" Daniel Eads d. "Ironman" Ken Kasa & Flash Flanagan(w/ Travis Cook); Flanagan brought the kendo stick into the ring, leading to battle with Hatton over its possession. Flanagan repeatedly manhandled referee Jay King and tried to use him as a human shield as Heath threatened him with the weapon...leading to King getting fed up and turning his back so that Hatton could nail Flanagan twice with the kendo stick! Hatton got the pin on Flash after that. After Flanagan recovered, he blew his top and beat down Hatton and Eads with the weapon.

WWE Raw

-Commentators:  Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, & John Bradshaw Layfield.
-Damien Sandow & Tag Team Champions Goldust & Stardust(w/ Mike Mizanin) d. U.S. Champion Sheamus O'Shaunessy & Jimmy & Jey Uso when Sandow rolled up Sheamus with a handful of tights.
-Alicia Fox(w/ Paige Knight) d. Women's Champion A.J. Lee(non-title) via rollup after a distraction by Paige.
-Randy Orton and John Cena had a war of words...Chief Operating Officer Triple H had announced that the winner of their Hell In A Cell match will get the next WWE Title shot at Brock Lesnar.  That brought out Paul Heyman to extol the virtues of his client...Cena teased giving him an F-U but just set him down.  However, Orton had no such mercy and dropped Cena with an RKO...Orton and Heyman gloated, but then Orton RKOed Heyman as well.
-Alexander Rusev(w/ Lana Perry) d. Big E Langston with the Accolade(camel clutch).
-Brie Bella d. Summer Rae with the Bella Buster(X-Factor).
-A promo exchange between Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins featured a visit from Mick Foley, a man who knows Hell In A Cell all too well...
-Antonio Cesaro d. Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler(non-title) after blocking a superkick and delivering a European uppercut.  Cesaro dropped Dolph with a post-match Neutralizer.
-Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, & Kane d. John Cena & Dean Ambrose in a handicap street fight in which the Hell In A Cell cage was lowered midway through the bout; Orton pinned Ambrose after countering a rebound lariat with the RKO.  Rollins took out Orton with the advanced curbstomp after the match, then celebrated on top of the Cell to end the show.

SICW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling show at the Community Center in East Carondelet, Illinois.

Just heard this morning about Ox Baker's passing. Surreal that I just saw him at an SICW event a few months ago...he was one of the great characters in wrestling.

Attendance has remained solid in East Carondelet despite being a bit down from the packed houses earlier in the year. There were some gravel piles in the parking lot that reduced available parking spaces by a bit, but thankfully I was able to find a relatively decent spot.

The start of the show was slightly delayed as a fan had some sort of medical emergency. He was on the opposite side of the building so I don't know exactly what happened, but I saw the ambulance lights outside the door...hope it was nothing serious.

The sound system had a hiccup when the National Anthem was supposed to be played, so a fan in my section started SINGING the Anthem on his own and everyone just kinda went with it. That's a first for me.

Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus, your referees were Keith Smith & Jay King.

"The Old School Warrior" Chaz Wesson & Farmer Billy Hills vs. Ax Allwardt & "Dead Sexy" Daniel Gunner: This was the only change from the announced lineup; it was originally posted as a singles match between Hills and Ax. Lot of "old school" in the ring with Chaz, Ax, and referee Keith Smith. There was a rough spot or two, but then neither side's wrestlers had teamed up with each other before. Ax and Gunner isolated Hills for a while and it got to the point where Chaz offered Keith a fan's glasses so he could see the tag. The end came when Chaz finally blind-tagged into the match and hit a cross-bodyblock off the top rope to pin Gunner in 9:11.

A promo segment featued Ricky Cruz and Travis Cook(w/ Ken Kasa & Bull Bronson) forming a temporary alliance; their goal was to prove that the masked Red River Jack is actually Ron Powers. Ron lost a loser-leaves-town(-for-the-rest-of-2014) match to Ricky and shouldn't be around...this helped to establish to the attending fans that Ron would be banned for life if he is revealed to be under the mask. (That had only been pushed on the TV show prior to this.) Seeing as how they've only got two months before Ron is cleared to return, they'd better work fast. Big Daddy came out with the masked man to return verbal fire, pushing a few matches that would happen later in the show.

Bobby D vs. Frankie "The Thumper" Wyatt: Don't blink as this one ended quickly; Wyatt missed an avalanche and Bobby D got the pin with a jackknife cradle in 1:03.

Drew interviewed promoter Herb Simmons about upcoming shows. As announced on Friday's Brothers On Whatever Show on 920 AM(that radio station seems oddly familiar to me...), Marty Jannetty is scheduled to be the special guest for the November 15th show. Jannetty competed in the later days of Wrestling At The Chase as Marty Oates and I saw him in a few of the flashback segments on SICW Wrestling Explosion; of course, he's best known as one-half of The Rockers with some guy named Shawn Michaels.

They also talked about the benefit show on November 22nd for John Blackheart & Big Momma Love; their house burned down and the local wrestling community is raising money for them. They were a bit before my time, but Blackheart had a hand in training a lot of local wrestlers during his active career. MMWA Co-Commissioner and retired referee Jim Harris was in the house to help promote the event; it'll be the first time in a few years that MMWA and SICW will be co-promoting a show.

"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson vs. Mohamad Ali Vaez: These two fought to a no-contest last month and Vaez interfered in Gary's match with Ricky Cruz last week in Swansea. It's a Wrestling 101 battle of the evil foreigner against the patriotic American(one with a military background, no less). It didn't take long for this one to get out of hand; they brawled to a double countout in 9:41. Gary did a fired-up promo after the match about defending his country...this feud MUST CONTINUE~!

Herb interviewed The One Man Gang, who was the visiting guest for the month. By all accounts, he was really nice to everyone and I shook his hand later in the evening. Unfortunately his heyday was a bit before my time; he was done with the WWF by the time I was watching, though I did see his brief WCW stint when he held the U.S. Title. He notably wrestled at CHIKARA'S King Of Trios a few years ago as part of "Team WWF" with Ax and Smash of Demolition. That led to an entertaining moment when Larry Sweeney(RIP) challenged him to a strut-off and he donned the Akeem hat to the tune of "Jive Soul Bro". It's a wrestling cliche but it's true: You don't realize how big some of these guys are until you see them in person.

Cue intermission numero uno...

The Tornado vs. Attila Khan: I knew very little about Khan before this show and I don't know much more now; I couldn't tell you if he's competed in other parts of the country or if he's a totally new wrestler. I fear some level of evil foreigner overlap with him and Vaez under the same roof. This was a glorified squash, as it should have been; Khan won with some sort of straitjacket hold(I was on the other side of the ring and didn't see the hold too clearly) in 4:55...but he refused to release the hold and the referee reversed the decision. Your winner(?): The Tornado.

Red River Jack(w/ "The Famous" Big Daddy) vs. Bull Bronson(w/ Travis Cook): Travis made it very clear that winning was secondary to unmasking on this night. As a result, this one didn't last long before Kasa and then Cruz stormed the ring for the DQ in 4:08. Big Jim Hoffarth made the save, nicely seguing into the next match(though all parties involved felt the need to return to the backstage area and then come back out)...

Big Jim Hoffarth vs. "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz: These two fought several times when Hoffarth was still under the Big Texan mask, but this was their first encounter since the unmasking. However, Kasa and Bronson(w/ Travis) were quick to exact vengeance for Hoffarth's involvement in their business...that led to another DQ in 5:05. Red River Jack(w/ Big Daddy) arrived to back up Hoffarth...an interesting pairing of the currently masked and the formerly masked. I smell a tag match in the making.

Cue intermission number two...there were a surprising number of indecisive finishes on this show(four in a row, in fact), but they did have purpose and will hopefully lead to management putting its collective foot down in the future about all the interference.

Classic Champion Heath Hatton & "The Man Of Tomorrow" Daniel Eads vs. "Ironman" Ken Kasa & Flash Flanagan(w/ Travis Cook): Current champion Hatton and protege Eads were going up against former champion Kasa and current contender Flanagan...Flanagan had targeted Eads at the September show to draw Hatton's attention, leading to their first title match in Fairmont City. That bout saw Flash initially win after using his kendo stick, but the decision was reversed...leaving Flash in a worse mood than usual. This was a standard solid tag bout...I was admittedly a bit distracted during the later parts of the show and didn't catch everything that happened. Referee Jay King had trouble maintaining order, including a few moments where a guy was thrown into the corner and indirectly went over the top rope as a result. (For reference, deliberately throwing an opponent over the top rope is a DQ in SICW.)

Things broke down near the end of the match and Flash's kendo stick came into play. Hatton got a hold of the weapon and Flash manhandled referee King, using him as a human shield. Jay finally got fed up with Flanagan's actions and deliberately turned his back as Heath laid out Flash with two shots from the kendo stick (earning some retribution for the kendo stick attack in Fairmont City...CONTINUITY~!). Of course, Jay turned around to count the pin when Hatton covered Flanagan...that ended it at 13:33. Flash blew his top and laid out both Hatton and Eads with the weapon after the bell...so Hatton-Flanagan II will take place at the November 15th show.

It's funny how this blog started out as more of a self-reference thing than anything else...over time, I heard from people on the local wrestling scene who said that they read it. I often wonder about my place in the grand scheme of things(both wrestling and otherwise)...I sit here as a 37-year-old guy who has far more life concerns than wrestling nowadays. I appreciate people like Brian Kelley at Missouri Wrestling Revival as well as Ben Simon and Drew Abbenhaus who take some of the load off my shoulders...I wish I could contribute more than I do to MWR, but I don't want my semi-jaded attitude to reflect on my writeups. The people around here deserve a bit better than that. I've said a few times lately that I'm one fan with one seat at the shows and one opinion...if a promotion is drawing good crowds who enjoy the shows, then that's what counts. At any rate: If you're reading this, thanks for your support.

The rest of the year looks like this:

Anarchy Wrestling TV #454

-Commentators:  Brett Wolverton & Jonathan Feltner.
-Jeremy Foster won a four-corner match with "The Encore" Kevin Blue, "The Violence Artist" Trever Aeon, and "The Undead Luchador" Supernatural when he pinned Supernatural after a flying knee strike (7:57 aired).  After the match, Feltner interviewed Foster about the title shot he earned with his win...and representative Bill Behrens suggested a Young Lions' Title shot at Joey Rhymer.  Sounds like a plan.
-Feltner interviewed The Laredo Kid, attempting to act as translator...he was thusly renamed "El Gran Laredo".  Mike Posey interrupted the segment and trashed the masked man, leading to a match...
-El Gran Laredo d. "The New Face Of Oldschool" Mike Posey by countout when "The Stray Cat" Brodie Ray Chase argued with Posey, distracting him from re-entering the ring (5:57 aired).

Hatton got the pin on Flash after that (13:33).  After Flanagan recovered, he blew his top and beat down Hatton and Eads with the weapon.

Comedy Part 530: Hey Guys, It's Contest Time

Location:  Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee:  Bruce Veach
After:  None(up first)
Before:  Max Price

Attendance was affected a bit by Game 4 of the NLCS...go Cards and all that.  I had the unenviable task of going up first...I did all the material I planned to do and I didn't go over my time, so mission accomplished in that regard.  I had some tough competition this week...once Bruce announced that the wildcard standings hadn't changed, I figured that was it for me.  Congrats to the current list of semifinalists:  Andrew Frank, Patrick Mahon, Tyrone Robinson, Ron Finger, Carolyn Agnew, Stryker Spurlock, Dusty Juergens, J.C. Sibala, Nathan Orton, Jim "The Dad" Keith, Ryno Burns, and Kenny Kinds.  Also, the current wildcards:  Andrew Hagan, Doug Morris, Brandon Judd, and Kathy Zeman.
