LU + Impact

Lucha Underground Season 4 Episode 3

-Commentators:  Matt Striker & Vampiro.
-Backstage:  P.J. Black & Jack Evans are listening to Ricky Mundo tell his story about going to an "Island Of The Dolls", which is where he and his doll "Rosa" met...they are understandably creeped out.  Enter Johnny Mundo & Taya Valkyrie, who have called an emergency meeting regarding their war with the Reptile Tribe.  Mundo tells Jack to call out one of the Reptile Tribe...Black insists that he's the "dragon slayer" and can do it, but Evans isn't exactly jumping at the opportunity.  Mundo asks if anyone has seen AngĂ©lico because he owes him a beating...meanwhile, the doll's voice has been chiming in like it's alive.
-X.O. Lishus(who works as Sonny Kiss on the indies) d. Jack Evans with a split-legged faceslam off the top rope (5:54).
-Lucha Underground Champion Pentagon Jr. talked up his great start to the season, surviving Aztec Warfare and then beating the monster Matanza Cueto to retain his title.  He vowed that no one would take the title from him...that sort of statement was just begging for a response and "They Call Him A Machine" Brian Cage hit the ring to lay out Pentagon with a discus lariat and belt shot.  Cage wasn't done as he powerbombed Pentagon off the ring apron and through a table on the floor.
-Backstage:  Ring announcer Melissa Santos was worried about Fenix's well-being in the main event...Fenix was confident as he had won the previous Grave Consequences Match, but Melissa reminded him that he has two opponents tonight instead of just one.
-Mil Muertes(w/ Catrina Perez) won a Three Way To The Grave(elimination casket) Match with Fenix and Jeremiah Crane.  Crane was eliminated when Ivelisse Velez(getting revenge for Ultima Lucha Tres) attacked Crane with a hammer before shutting him in a casket (12:43).  Muertes won by shutting Fenix in a casket after countering a top-rope move with a mid-air Flatliner (20:09 aired).
-Backstage:  Promoter Antonio Cueto visited his son Matanza, who was chained to the floor.  According to Antonio, he failed his son because he offered him to the gods...but only because he asked them to preserve a sliver of his humanity.  That humanity was contained within the ever-present key to Matanza's cell...Dario kept it close to his heart because he cared for his brother, but caring got Dario killed.  He told Matanza that he was meant to be more than his son and threw him the key, telling him to destroy it and fully embrace his power.  Matanza shattered the key in his hands and broke free of his shackles...Antonio said goodbye to his son to close the show.

-Madison Rayne d. Tessa Blanchard with a crucifix bomb (8:07).  Tessa attacked Madison after the match; she brought in a chair to do more damage, but Women's Champion "The Undead Bride" Su Yung(w/ bridesmaids) made her entrance.  Tessa left the ring, leaving Madison to be beaten down by the bridesmaids with Su's direction; however, Allie Dennis returned to make the save by fighting off the bridesmaids.

-"2.0" Da'Marius Jones d. Barackus via small package to retain the Heavyweight Title (11:24).  Deacon Cash attacked Jones from behind after the match and The Landlord announced that Cash would challenge Jones for the title at the next show on July 14th.

MMWA Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance show on Saturday, June 9th at the South Broadway Athletic Club in St. Louis, Missouri.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

It was time for the MMWA's monthly offering at the beautiful and/or historic SBAC...I was able to score a table by arriving early, but eventually moved away for better viewing since I was essentially flying solo for the night.  Watching alone, watching with friends, and watching with wrestlers all provide different experiences, I have found...

Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus(Ben Simon was out of town); your referees were Shaft, Nick Ridenour, & Jay King.

Brandon Espinosa kicked off the show...after he lost to Cruiserweight Champion Da'Marius Jones at the May show, he left his boots in the ring (usually symbolic of a wrestler's retirement).  He explained that he felt like he was done at the time...he'd taken time off due to personal problems and had to cancel a lot of bookings.  He said that someone close to him had been a victim of sexual assault and the culprit was someone with whom he'd shared a locker room, so he had to take a long hard look at the business and whether he wanted to remain a part of it.  His comments were interrupted by A.J. Williams, who was carrying Espy's boots...he said that he didn't want Espy to walk away from the business until they locked up in the ring one more time.  It was unclear at this point where Espy would accept the challenge, but we would find out later in the night.

"Da Bomb" Brian James vs. Damion Cortess for the Heavyweight Title:  This match was set up by a fan vote to determine the challenger...Cortess was a somewhat surprising winner of that vote as his recent win-loss record hadn't been the best.  These two seemed to work pretty well together, as it turned out...but Deacon Cash had other ideas.  After missing out on a previous title shot due to state blood work AND not being voted into this championship opportunity, Cash made his way to ringside and argued with Commissioner Jim Harris about the situation...then jumped in the ring and speared James, getting Cortess disqualified in 8:35.  This touched off a brawl between Cortess and Cash that required several referees to disperse.

El Diablo Loco vs. "The Righteous One" Johnny Park:  Park has been throwing out open challenges in recent months...something which rarely goes well for the rulebreaking types in the wrestling world in particular.  The masked Loco hadn't had a lot of success in his short tenure in Midwest wrestling, so it seemed like Park might have a chance to reverse his recent fortunes.  However, Loco survived the assault, avoiding a corner kick to the face(Park doesn't wear boots) and getting the surprise rollup pin  in 5:56!  An irate Park beat down Loco afterwards, continuing a trend for the night...

"2.0" Da'Marius Jones(w/ A.J. Williams) vs. The Snitch for the Cruiserweight Title:  This shaped up to be an interesting match as both men are essentially rulebreakers at South Broadway, though the fans REALLY wanted to cheer the 2.0 duo and sided with them in this one.  As far as the actual match flow went, Snitch came off as the lesser of two evils for the night as Williams took his cheapshots at opportune moments.  A.J. provided a distraction at a key moment, allowing Jones to get in a low blow behind the referee's back and roll up Snitch for the pin in 8:21 with a handful of tights.  Once again, Snitch is screwed out of a title opportunity...

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Pepsi and Sierra Mist.

Brandon Espinosa vs. A.J. Williams(w/ Da'Marius Jones):  These two have battled many times in the past over both the MMWA Heavyweight Title and the belt then known as the Jr. Heavyweight Title.  Espy was all business as he made his way to the ring, but the 2.0 members wanted to make light of the situation.  Jones even put on a hot dog hat and danced around to No Way Jose's music, making reference to Espy's recent appearance on Raw as part of Jose's conga line.  A.J. and Espy joined in on the dancing and mini-conga line, but Espy broke rank and took them both out with a suicide dive.  Espy had all the momentum in the world until a trip-up by Jones allowed A.J. to hit his own version of Paydirt for a near-fall.  Espy retaliated by backdropping Williams over the top rope onto his partner, then bringing him back into the ring for the brainbuster...but only getting a two-count.  A.J. managed to fight back and went for a cross-bodyblock off the top rope, but Espy rolled through and stood with Williams in his grip, then lifted him into a second brainbuster to get the win in 14:40!  It was a tremendous matchup...Espy took off his boots as he left the ring...but changed his mind and went back to pick them up before leaving.

"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson vs. Khayman(w/ Abigail):  Gary Jackson Fashion Watch(tm):  Blue jacket, white trunks.  Even though Khayman started his career with the MMWA, the two had never faced each other before this show.  Khayman targeted Jackson's arm in an attempt to set him up for his Fujiwara armbar finisher...the ground game was working, but he went to the top rope and it cost him as he missed the swanton bomb.  Jackson locked Khayman in the Texas Cloverleaf for the tapout in 8:42, scoring a hard-fought win.

"The Supreme" B.T. Daramola(w/ "The Spanish Red Devil" Ricky Rodriguez) vs. "The Caramel Bear" C.J. Shine(w/ The Snitch):  Snitch had an icepack on his groin at ringside, still hurting from the earlier low blow.  As a result, he wasn't much of an outside factor in the match and Rodriguez would have been there to hold him off anyway.  B.T. scored the win with his version of the Codebreaker in 7:33.

Moondog Rover vs. The Big Texan vs. Deacon Cash:  This was set up as a top-contender match for the Heavyweight Title, as Rover and Texan were both recent titleholders; Cash had been pushing for a championship match for months, though ironically he's DROPPED weight in recent months and was practically dwarfed by his larger opponents.  Rivals Moondog and Texan primarily focused on each other as Cash chose to bide his time on the floor and pick his spots.  One referee couldn't realistically be expected to maintain order with the combustible elements in the ring...and then Damion Cortess went after Cash to get revenge for his earlier interference.  Moondog and Rover kept on brawling in and out of the ring and the official finally threw the match out, calling for a no-contest in 6:36.  Referees and wrestlers arrived on the scene in an attempt to restore order, which took some time...the issue between Moondog and Texan is far from settled and now Cash has a problem with Cortess.

"Excalibur" Chase King vs. "The Enforcer" Jimmy D:  Broadway has brought back the tradition of putting an extra match after the advertised main event.  King recently returned to Broadway after a long absence and I am in awe of his new look, sporting longer blonde hair.  Chase scored the victory in 5:26 after a running boot to the face to wrap up the show.

Tonight I'm headed to Wrestling Over Everything in Centreville, Illinois...next weekend I'm planning to make the road trip to Proving Ground Pro in Athens, IL, hopefully carpooling with someone.  I'm slowly but surely getting caught up on these commentaries...my busy three-show weekend from last week is next on the docket.

That's my special comment for this, the thirty-third wrestling show I've attended in the year 2018.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

WLW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about the World League Wrestling show on Saturday, June 2nd at the Race Wrestling Arena in Troy, Missouri.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

As has become tradition for WLW shows, I carpooled with Ben Simon to Troy, Missouri.  Ultimo Dragon and his old manager Sonny Onoo were scheduled to appear at this show, but they cancelled a few weeks ahead of time...as it turned out, they appeared at F1RST Wrestling in Minnesota as Dragon faced Mike Quackenbush in an indie dream match.  Hope I get a chance to watch that match at some point and hope Dragon can stop by this area sometime in the future.  Despite the absence of the special guests, WLW had one of its best shows in terms of in-ring action in recent memory.

Your ring announcer was Dane Horst; your referee was Martin Kattich.

Jaden Roller and Rex Fults had a war of words to hype their lumberjack match later in the night, which turned out to be the main event of the evening.

Jack Gamble vs. Tag Team Champion Superstar Steve Fender(w/ Brandon Espinosa):  Espy was absent at last month's show, but he was more than happy to claim his championship belt from his partner.  Gamble has been showing me a lot lately, scoring an upset win over then-Heavyweight Champion Leland Race and coming very close to capturing the Jr. Heavyweight Title from Jayden Dominic Rose in a strap match.  They had a really strong opener with Espy adding his two cents' worth at times, though sometimes that distracted his own partner.  The finish saw Fender go for the swandive headbutt off the top rope(shades of his original trainer Harley Race, who was conspicuous by his absence), but Gamble rolled out of the way...after Fender crashed to the mat, Gamble caught him with an Oklahoma roll for the flash pin in 13:52!

Jayden Dominic Rose vs. Kyle Roberts for the Jr. Heavyweight Title:  These two worked really well together...with any luck, it'll turn into an ongoing series over the belt.  Hopefully they can bulk up the junior heavyweight division in the near future with the incoming trainees...we shall see.  Roberts has been impressive in his recent outings, including his handicap match with Fender & Espy (and I usually don't care for handicap matches); it's too bad we never got a full-fledged tag match with Roberts and Scott Steiner.  It didn't seem to be a good night for top-rope moves as Roberts went for his finishing frog splash only to land on the raised knees of his opponent...Rose hit a roundhouse kick, then a Kota Ibushi-style trapped-arm knee strike for the victory in 16:03.  I would have liked for the finish to be a bit dirtier to leave room for a potential rematch, but it was competitive enough that it could easily be set up in the near future.

Heavyweight Champion "The Hybrid Ace" Jon Webb vs. Tag Team Champion Brandon Espinosa(w/ Steve Fender), non-title:  I'm unsure why Webb's recent Troy matches have been of the non-title variety...Webb defeated Fender in May so it was Espy's turn to take a shot at the champ.  These two fought to a great twenty-minute draw in Dynamo Pro a few years ago.  Fender was a bit too eager to get involved and got himself ejected from ringside less than five minutes into the bout...whoops.  Espy focused on the arm after hitting a shoulderbreaker, perhaps in preparation for the cross-armbreaker.  The momentum swung back and forth, but the bell rang as the 15:00 time limit expired.  (My stopwatch said 13:32, but hey.)  Fender came back out to check on his partner, but the fans and Webb wanted five more minutes...and since all parties agreed(I assume), we did get a restart!  The action had barely resumed before Webb scored the quick pin with a victory roll in 1:09 of the restart (16:09 total)...I would have no problem with these two gentlemen locking up again in the future.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Pepsi, Mountain Dew, M&M cookies, bottle of water.

Stacey O'Brien vs. "Miss Natural" Heather Patera for the Women's Title:  This was Part MCMXVIII in the ongoing series between the two; Stacey is an eight-time champion while Miss Natural is a seven-time titleholder.  No one else even comes close to those numbers of reigns (Lucy Mendez and Amy Hennig have three each).  Hopefully the new blood of the local women's wrestling scene will have more of a presence in the future; I feel like we'll see more promotions start their own women's championships soon.  The finish saw Stacey bring the title belt into play while the official's back was turned...in a classic Eddy Guerrero ploy, she threw the belt to the challenger and dropped to the mat, making the ref think she had been hit with the championship.  That led to a DQ in 10:59 with Stacey retaining her title...of course, things are never quite settled between these two.

"The Wrestler For The People" Rex Fults vs. "The Heartthrob" Jaden Roller, lumberjack match:  The other wrestlers on the card were at ringside for this one.  Roller scored two previous victories over Rex, including one at Night Of Champions where Rex had a minor assist from "The Mouth Of The South" Jimmy Hart in disposing of manager "Can-Do" Curtis Dearling.  While Curtis seems to be gone, Roller still found ways to escape decisive defeats as he walked out on a match to get counted out in May.  As a result, we got the stipulation bout to prevent Roller from taking a walk again.

In a funny moment, Rex tried to "skin the cat" back into the ring after being thrown over the ropes...and finally pulled it off with the ringside fan favorites' assistance.  These two have a good dynamic with each other as it was the "everyman" Rex against arrogant wannabe superstar Roller.  Rex nearly won with his version of the Bossman Slam but Roller somehow survived, kicking out at two.  Roller fired back with his jumping side kick but THAT only got a near-fall.  The combustible situation on the floor finally exploded as the lumberjacks brawled, leading to Rex diving off the apron onto the pile of humanity(not to mention his opponent).  After a hard-fought battle, Rex finally picked up the win with a huge superplex in 19:35!  Nicely done...it was a fitting blowoff to their recent feud.

Post-show, myself and Ben met up with Brian Kelley and Timothy Miller at the nearby Denny's for the latest meeting of the Midwest Wrestling Illuminate(BWAHAHAHA~!).  I seem to be going a bit simpler on my post-show food choices as I went with the Grand Slam Slugger:  Pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, and orange juice.  I'm a big fan of breakfast food in general, I have discovered...

The last two weekends of June don't have a whole lot in the immediate area...Wrestling Over Everything is in Centreville, IL this coming Sunday.  If you feel like making a road trip, Zero-One USA is in Rantoul, IL and New Breed Wrestling is in Sedalia, MO on Saturday...on Saturday the 30th, Proving Ground Pro is in Athens, IL and Cape Championship Wrestling has its monthly offering in Cape Girardeau, MO.

That's my special comment for this, the thirty-second wrestling show I've attended in the year 2018.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

LU + Impact

Lucha Underground Season 4 Episode 2

-Commentators:  Matt Striker & Vampiro.
-In King Cuerno's trophy room:  Catrina Perez materialized in search of the Gauntlet Of The Gods, but found it missing from its stand...Cuerno said that some trophies are too dangerous to display and that the gauntlet had the power to destroy the seven ancient Aztec tribes.  Catrina said that she needed the gauntlet to get her life force back...Cuerno said he gave the gauntlet to "someone" for safe keeping, adding that he didn't know where or WHEN he hid it.  After that, Catrina disappeared from the room...
-The Trios Champions were scheduled to defend against El Texano Jr., Dr. Wagner Jr., & Famous B...but B(w/ Beautiful Brenda) said that ring announcer Melissa Santos didn't have her facts straight.  However, Texano and Wagner were busy making money for him in Mexico...so he had three new clients.
-Willie Mack, Killshot, & Son Of Havoc d. "The Savage" Jake Strong(fka Jack Swagger), Sammy Guevara, & Big Bad Steve(who previously worked as Pindar)(w/ Famous B & Beautiful Brenda); Strong seemingly had the mtch won with the anklelock on Killshot, but Famous B had the referee's attention at the wrong time.  The champs turned the tide and Havoc pinned Steve after the shooting star press (5:30).  Strong snapped and attacked his partners after the match, even throwing Famous B across the ring and hooking the anklelock, giving it a final twist to seemingly "snap" the ankle.
-Promoter Antonio Cueto announced that the Aztec Medallions would be back in play, starting with the next matchup...
-For Aztec Medallion #1:  Dragon Azteca Jr. d. Drago(w/ Kobra Moon) with a top-rope victory roll (6:08).  Kobra put the badmouth on Drago, but Johnny Mundo arrived to trash-talk the pair (since Mundo eliminated Daga last week, prompting Kobra to send in Vibora after Mundo).  Mundo was simply a distraction as Taya Valkyrie entered the ring from the other side to attack Kobra...then Mundo kicked Drago in the groin from behind and laid him out with a basement knee strike.
-Backstage in Antonio Cueto's office:  Antonio prepared to release Matanza from his cell, but Catrina materialized in his presence.  Catrina said she was stuck between the physical realm and the spirit realm...but she wanted Mil Muertes to face Fenix in Grave Consequences to steal his life force.  Antonio made it so, asking if it'll mean she has to knock next time she visits his office...she said "yes" and BAMFed out of there.
-Pentagon Dark d. Matanza Cueto(w/ Antonio Cueto) after two Canadian Destroyers and the package piledriver to retain the Lucha Underground Title (7:45).  Pentagon went for the armbar/hammerlock combo to break Matanza's arm, but Antonio held up the key and Matanza powered out of the hold before rolling out of the ring.  Antonio slapped the monster and called him "weak" before leading him to the backstage area.
-Backstage:  Jeremiah Crane entered Antonio's office...Antonio was not in the mood, but Crane wanted into the casket match to bury both Fenix and Mil.  Antonio declared that it would happen next week:  The first "Three Way To The Grave" Match!

-"Big Poppa Pump" Scott Steiner d. Kevin Matthews with the Steiner Recliner(camel clutch) (2:42).
-Madison Rayne d. Taya Valkyrie with the Crossrayne(inverted swinging neckbreaker) (6:33).  After the match, Rayne announced that she would be challenging Su Yung for the Women's Title at Slammiversary.
-Pentagon Jr. & El Hijo Del Fantasma d. Ohio Vs. Everything(Jake & Dave Crist)(w/ Sami Callihan) when Pentagon pinned Jake after the pumphandle Michinoku Driver (12:03 aired).  Callihan & OvE beat down Pentagon after the match and nearly ripped off his mask before Fantasma ran them off with a chair.
-Next week:  Rich Swann and The Desi Hit Squad(Rohit Raju & Gursinder Singh) make their Impact debuts.

TBP Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about the "Beard Productions" show on Friday, June 1st at the Knights Of Columbus Hall in Cahokia, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

I heard about this show the day that it happened; Tony Esteem had posted about it on Twitter but I had missed those messages.  Ben Simon contacted me to ask if I would be going, so I decided to check it out...it would definitely prove to be a unique experience and Ben joined me for the evening.  I hadn't been to the Cahokia venue in several years...NWA Central States Championship Wrestling ran there once and Mid-America Xtreme had shows at the venue on a regular basis.

Your ring announcer was Chris Roedel; your referee was Luke Roberts(who hadn't worn the stripes in a long time).

The night started with a beer chugging contest with three contestants...I think two were podcast hosts and a third was an older fan(who ended up winning).  Dynamo Pro Heavyweight Champion "The Wind Of Destruction" Makaze was in the house as a judge for both the beer chugging competition and the boxing and mixed-martial-arts bouts.

Kyle Hammer vs. Jimmi LaFleur:  I've seen Hammer recently at Outlaw Wrestling, Pro Wrestling Championship Wrestling, and Strictly Nsane Pro Wrestling...I first knew him as a ring announcer for St. Louis Anarchy but he's made the transition to an active competitor.  In that regard, he actually had a slight experience edge on relative newcomer LaFleur and got into his head with his trash-talking.  Hammer scored the victory after a DDT in 6:46.

"The Spanish Red Devil" Ricky Rodriguez vs. Tony Esteem:  These guys have been on opposite sides of a recent tag feud with Ricky aligning with the veteran Jackal and Esteem teaming with LaFleur.  Ricky has struggled to pick up wins thus far, but the fans usually get behind him as an underdog.  It looked like Esteem was setting up for the win with his headlock driver finisher, but Ricky countered nicely with a belly-to-back suplex into a rollup for the flash pin in 7:19.  LaFleur hit the ring to help Esteem beat down Rodriguez after the match (I guess Kyle Hammer wasn't available for a save), doing damage with a chair before finishing with their sideslam/top-rope elbowdrop combo.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Mountain Dew and pizza.  I also bought a 50/50 raffle ticket, though I didn't win...one of these days...

Brandon Dalton vs. Jason Thompson, boxing challenge:  I don't think Luke Roberts has officiated too many boxing matches(or MMA bouts for that matter).  Ben Simon(who's far more familiar with the rules of those sports) was decidedly unhappy with the uncalled rule infractions in both bouts...both guys seemed to have trouble keeping their boxing gloves on their hands and they ended up duct-taping them.  Thompson won by second-round knockout when the referee stopped the match.

Jack Tate vs. Collin Reagin, mixed martial arts challenge:  This didn't seem drastically different from the previous match...it seemed like most of the audience at the show was there to see these two matches.  I THINK these guys do a podcast but don't hold me to that.  At any rate, there was more than just punching obviously and it went longer than the previous bout...Tate got the tapout victory with a guillotine hold in the third round.

This was a different sort of show and I didn't know what to expect out of the second half...I imagine my colleagues who are better versed in boxing and MMA would be more qualified to speak on those bouts.

That's my special comment for this, the thirty-first wrestling show I've attended in the year 2018.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.
