WWE Flood

WWE Smackdown

-Commentators:  Mauro Ranallo, Byron Saxton, & Jerry Lawler.
-U.S. Champion Kalisto, Antonio Cesaro, & Sami Zayn d. Sheamus O'Shaunessy, Alberto Del Rio, & Alexander Rusev by countout.  Del Rio walked out on his partners after an argument and then a miscommunication led to Rusev following suit...Sheamus was left alone and finally took a walk himself (8:34 aired).
-Baron Corbin d. Damien Sandow with the End Of Days(mid-air Flatliner) (2:10).
-Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady d. Curtis Axel & Bo Dallas(w/ Heath Slater) when Enzo pinned Axel after he and Cass hit the Rocket Launcher (2:48); Tag Team Champions The New Day(Big E Langston, Kofi Kingston, & Xavier Woods) did commentary and The Vaudevillains(Aiden English & Simon Gotch) watched the match from the entranceway.
-Apollo Crews d. Stardust with the delayed Blue Thunder Bomb (3:01).
-WWE Champion Roman Reigns d. Intercontinental Champion Mike Mizanin(w/ Maryse Ouellet-Mizanin)(non-title) via spear (7:11 aired); A.J. Styles watched the match from ringside.  Reigns and Styles had a post-match confrontation, prompting Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows to make their entrance...that led to Reigns brawling with the duo until Jimmy & Jey Uso entered the fray.

-Before the main event, promoter Dario Cueto announced that Angélico had been injured and was being rushed to the hospital...so Son Of Havoc and Ivelisse Velez had to defend the Trios Titles without him.
-Rey Misterio Jr., Prince Puma, & Dragon Azteca Jr. won a four-way dance with Fenix, Jack Evans, & P.J. Black; Son Of Havoc, Angélico, & Ivelisse Velez(C)(w/o Angélico); and The Crew(Cortez Castro & Mr. Cisco) & Joey Ryan to win the Trios Titles.  Eliminations:  Ivelisse pinned Castro with a small package after Castro argued with Ryan (7:43).  Ivelisse hit a Code Red on Evans, but Black broke up the pin with a low superkick and turned the pinning combination to give Evans the three-count (11:06 aired).  After a flurry of offense, Rey pinned Evans after a split-legged moonsault (15:34 aired).
-Elsewhere:  Vampiro met with a wheelchair-bound Pentagon Jr....Vampiro ordered him to get up, finally "convincing him" by dripping hot wax from a candle on him.  However, Pentagon quickly fell and Vampiro told him he was "weak" before leaving him laying on the floor...

Comedy Part 682: Fun Effingshow

Location: Outer Limits Bar & Grill (Effingham, IL)
Emcee: Josh Funneman
After: Nick Hyde
Before: Jeremy Eastep

Jeremy and Josh invited me to perform on this showcase, a trek that gave my new car its first real test...it passed swimmingly.  The lineup also featured Brody Sparks(one of several comics from the Champagne IL area), Lucas Hinderliter, first-timer Cory Clutter, Mason King, Andrew Hagan, and Justin Tuttle.  I did a ten-minute set and did pretty well in a chatty bar setting; local guys like Cory and Jeremy did better than some of the outside guys.  Justin essentially did an all-crowd work set and it went over great...sweet.  Had a good time and hope to be back soon...next up for me is wherever fate takes me on Tuesday night.

Comedy Parts 680-1: Hey Guys + Fitz's

Location: Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee: Brian McDowell
After: Lucas Hinderliter
Before: Ryan Dalton

Location: Fitz's
Emcee: Andrew Mihalevich
After: Tom Hill
Before: Casey Paulsen

My vacation week continued as I performed at Hey Guys' weekly open-mic and also went to Fitz's.  I felt like I had a good set at Hey Guys as I worked on some of my newer jokes.  As for Fitz's, there weren't many non-comics and the audience had thinned from there...I went up fairly late and just decided to use my notebook to dust off some older jokes.  I had a good time with it, at any rate.  Friday evening will be a unique adventure as I'm doing a show in Effingham with several comics from around the Midwest...should be fun.  Woo.

WWE NXT

-Commentators:  Tom Phillips & Corey Graves.
-NXT Women's Champion Asuka Urai d. Eva Marie (non-title) after the spinning roundhouse kick (9:29 aired); Nia Jax came out midway through the match but didn't interfere.  Asuka and Nia had a post-match staredown.
-Highlights were shown from this past weekend in Lowell, Massachusetts when Samoa Joe defeated Finn Bálor to win the NXT Title.
-Backstage:  New NXT Champion Samoa Joe said that his title win was inevitable...Bálor barely survived his previous encounters with Joe, but he wasn't so lucky this time.
-The Revival(Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder) d. Matt Lee & Jeff Parker(aka Shane Matthews & Scott Parker of 3.0) when Wilder pinned Lee after he and Dawson hit the Shatter Machine(Flapjack-into-Codebreaker) (3:13).
-The Hype Bros(Zack Ryder & Mojo Rawley) d. Wesley Blake & Buddy Murphy when Ryder pinned Blake after the Hype Ryder(Mojo pickup/Zack second-rope Rough Ryder) (4:45).  Dawson & Wilder attacked Ryder & Mojo after the match.
-Carmella Van Damme d. Aliyah Areebi via push-up headscissors submission (3:21).
-Shinsuke Nakamura d. Elias Samson after the Kinshasa(flying knee strike) (4:23).

WIA Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Sunday's Wrestling Invades America show at the Improvement Hall in Swansea, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

Real life intervened in a few regards in these past few weeks; I had rented a vehicle the previous weekend with the intention of using it for a day or two, not a week and a half.  As of Monday, I am the proud leaser of a 2016 Nissan Sentra...my first new car and my first vehicle lease.  The 2009 Chevy Aveo served me well for the past six years, but when things go kablooey like they did and one gets overcharged at one's traditional place of vehicular maintenance, one has to make big decisions.

The two wrestling shows on Saturday(Dynamo and High Risk) were on the other side of Missouri, so I took a pass and went to the comedy club on Saturday night after my compatriot Brandon Barr made a last-ditch attempt to fix the Aveo.  Thankfully WIA's Sunday offering was close to home so the trip was negligible.  Attendance was a bit lighter than usual, but live entertainment in the St. Louis area is battling the double-whammy of nicer weather and an overload of sports (Cardinals baseball season starting, Blues hockey season continuing)...I've seen it in local comedy as well.

Your ring announcer was Ben Simon; your referees were Jason Pemberton & Jaylen Davis.

Big Jim Hoffarth wanted to get some revenge on Jimmy D & Bobby D, but neither was in the house...as a result, Hoffarth issued a challenge for the May 22nd show to get one or both of them in the ring.

The promo cavalcade continued as The Landlord attempted to recruit Heavyweight Champion Kevin Lee Davidson, but K.L.D. turned him down in no uncertain terms.  I have trouble keeping track of who's in charge at WIA...I think Landlord is General Manager, but Tyler Copeland is occasionally acknowledged as the real-life promoter.  Landlord seemed to take the champion's decision in stride, but we would see later that that was not the case...

Prince Moses vs. Da'Marius Jones:  These two are on opposite sides of the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance's tag team division as Moses is one-half of the Tag Champs there and Jones is a former titleholder.  My dumb idea is that Moses' axe kick should be called something along the lines of the "Red Sea Parting".  (See, cuz Moses...*ducks thrown objects*)  Moses debuted in October and has been progressing nicely in his rookie year, from what I've seen.  The ceiling of the Swansea venue is not very cooperative when it comes to the high-flyers...Moses had to deliver his finishing Meteora(flying double-kneedrive) off the second rope, scoring the victory in 9:23.  It looked like he may have hurt his knee on the landing, but he seemed okay later in the evening.  Moses challenged Interstate Champion Leone Mephisto to defend his title against him in a straight-up match, rather than challenging him after he'd just competed in a tough battle royal...we'll see if that comes to fruition.

Ben Simon welcomed Kandi Kane back to WIA for the first time in several months...but she didn't get to say much before "Infamous" Tyler Copeland interrupted her.  Kandi upset Copeland in her debut about a year ago, but that didn't seem to change Copeland's misogynist attitude as he told her to go make him a sandwich.  She seemed ready to leave peacefully to shut him up, but LaMarcus Clinton stood up for her and the impromptu match was set up...

LaMarcus Clinton(w/ Kandi Kane) vs. "Infamous" Tyler Copeland:  L.M.C. got his hair cut short and no longer has the wig...I am shocked and saddened by this.  These two had a good matchup at Pro Wrestling Epic last year with Copeland picking up the victory...they got a bit more time in this rematch.  The referee was knocked down(it was the only match officiated by Jaylen Davis as Pemberton handled the rest of the card) and Copeland brought in a chair, but Kandi took it away from him...only to set it down on the mat, allowing Copeland to deliver his finishing curbstomp onto the chair.  Ladies and gentlemen, we have a heel turn...and Copeland revived the referee to count three in 8:27.  The turn produced an audience reaction of essentially "Huh?"...I had a feeling it might happen, then realized it when she didn't immediately attack Tyler with the chair.  I'd heard rumors of WIA starting a women's division and I imagine Kandi would be one of the main players in that...I've been wanting to see women's wrestling get a higher profile on the local scene, especially since World League Wrestling is the only area promotion with a Women's Championship.  Hopefully that'll happen in the near future.

Adam Caster & Tony Kozina vs. Beauty & The Beast(Stevie Fierce & Rob Matter) for the Tag Team Titles:  Fierce & Matter didn't get much pre-show hype for this appearance, unfortunately.  I had seen Fierce once or twice before(at St. Louis Anarchy?) but hadn't seen Matter before.  I had commented to a friend that Caster & Kozina looked like a before-and-after picture of SOME kind...the friend suggested "father and son", which seemed fitting.  Caster is a Tag Champ in two area promotions with different partners; he co-holds the St. Louis Anarchy Tag Team Titles with Evan Gelistico in The Cause.  One of the challenged slipped on the ropes as they executed a spike version of the Unprettier on Kozina, but they still managed to hit it well enough for a near-fall as Caster broke up the pin.  A blind tag allowed Caster to spear Matter for the win in 13:25 after my current pet peeve of a guy rallying after a hot tag, only to immediately tag his banged-up partner back into the fray...oh well.

Everett Connors vs. Brandon Espinosa:  Hadn't seen Connors in a few months, but he was looking to make a statement in this matchup against one of his mentors.  Espy didn't seem to take Connors seriously in the early going, but Connors made him pay for that cavalier attitude.  The low ceiling was a hindrance in this match, but they made the most of the environment they had.  Connors survived the best of Espinosa's arsenal and kept coming back for more, but a brainbuster finally ended the battle in 16:23(!).  After the match, Espy noted that Connors started out as one of his trainees but, like others before him, moved on to train under former Ring Of Honor Heavyweight Champion Michael Elgin.  Espinosa congratulated Connors on a hard-fought battle, but told Connors to make a choice between himself and Elgin...

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Fitz's root beer, Ski soda(I support local businesses~!), and pepperoni/sausage pizza.  A few years ago I might have partaken in the "grenade"-style chicken wings, but not nowadays...a bit too spicy for my taste.  Wasabi AND horseradish among other incendiary ingredients?  Eep.

Trystan Brady Shadeux made a big entrance with his new protege Paulie Ravastelli, but they were interrupted by Vuluum and his cornerperson under a similar robe.  Shadeux didn't seem to take the getup seriously, but Vuluum proceeded to "Force-choke" Ravastelli:  He held out his hand and clenched his grip as Ravastelli fell to the mat like he was being throttled.  Shadeux ran away from the masked man, who threatened to continue his pursuit of the evil forces in WIA...the fans didn't seem to know what to make of all of that.

Leone Mephisto vs. Billy McNeil vs. Ace Hawkins for the Interstate Title:  McNeil came out in sailor's garb and said that he was planning to buy a boat with the winner's/champion's share of the purse money.  After a few choice words for Prince Moses(during which he emphatically denied him another title opportunity), Mephisto attacked Billy before Hawkins could even make his entrance.  Oddly, that was probably a sound strategy as McNeil and Hawkins have been allies in recent months.  (Their tag team name is "Fearless Bueller".)  Each pairing out of the three wrestlers had a turn in the ring, with McNeil and Hawkins being more sportsmanlike toward each other as opposed to Mephisto's win-at-all-costs mentality.  The no-countout-no-DQ environment of a triple threat match eliminated Mephisto's championship advantage, but the titleholder took advantage of the format by handcuffing Hawkins to the ropes.  With one opponent taken out of the situation, Mephisto was able to finish off McNeil with the Air Raid Crash and pin him with feet on the ropes in 12:08.  Ace was furious afterwards and challenged Mephisto to face him one-on-one...he even directed his rage at the video commentary crew of Taylor Champion and Trystan Brady Shadeux.

Heavyweight Champion Kevin Lee Davidson vs. Pro Wrestling Epic Heavyweight Champion Brandon Aarons, non-title:  I could have sworn this was originally billed as a title-vs.-title bout, but I guess not.  It played out as a battle of fan favorites despite their encounters in other promotions where K.L.D. is a rulebreaker...it could have realistically gone in either direction, but politics abound when the champions of two independent promotions square off (even if the promotions in question are on friendly terms).  I'm honestly wondering about the status of PWE as they haven't had a show since November.  At any rate, the non-finish was probably a necessity as Tyler Copeland and Barackus attacked both guys for the no-contest in 12:48.  They hated each other not too long ago, but I guess money talks as they were both wearing Landlord T-shirts and were accompanied by the man himself.  Landlord got his payback on K.L.D. for rejecting his allegiance and I imagine Aarons just happened to be in the crossfire...so the two champions now have common enemies.

A lot was set up for the next show on May 22nd, which was a nice touch and cool to see...it's always good to have at least one match(preferably the main event but not always) to hype for the next event.  Next Saturday has Pro Wrestling Championship Series in Granite City, IL and Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in Millstadt...on the Missouri side, there's New Breed Wrestling in Sedalia and Gateway Elite Wrestling in Camdenton.

That's my special comment for this, the sixteenth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2016.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

Comedy Parts 678-9: First At Helium, Last At Crow's Nest

Location: Helium Comedy Club
Host: Jeremy Hellwig
After: Jeremy Hellwig
Before: Sarah Pearl

Location: Crow's Nest (Wild Card Comedy)
Host: Tree Sanchez
After: Casey Paulsen
Before: None(on last)

While I didn't make the open-mic list at Helium this week, I was asked to do a special "host audition" showcase on Wednesday night along with a half-dozen other local comedians.  It was a chance for us to do longer sets and club announcements in preparation for weekend emcee bookings...woo.  Ben Simon and his female friend attended the show, which I appreciated since I had a few comp tickets to dole out.  I felt like I lost some momentum in the second half of my set, but I filled it out well and nailed the announcements...woo.  I got some good feedback from manager Andrew...regional material may not fly as well in different areas(i.e. references to Bellevegas or Washington Park).

From there, I made my way to The Crow's Nest for Wild Card Comedy...the bar was very chatty, but I crossed paths with familiar face Justin Poole in the house.  I went on last and figured out pretty quickly that the people weren't listening to regular material, so I went to the card-drawing.  I whiffed on two cards(Do Pun-To Others and Rad Lib)...it was weird as I have several pun-related jokes but totally blanked on them.  As for the other one, crowd work may be my biggest onstage weakness...urgh.  The third card was Is This Thing On, meaning I did my last joke sans microphone.  That went slightly better and my overall set went slightly better than anticipated...I had a few things planned as I had wanted to avoid repeating anything I did at Helium, but the plan went out the window in a hurry.  Ah well...I need to learn to do more things on the fly while on stage.  Next up is another doubleheader on Thursday night:  Hey Guys Comedy, then Fitz's!

TNA Impact (Sacrifice)

-Commentators:  Josh Mathews & D'Angelo Dinero.
-R.I.P. Joanie "Chyna" Laurer.
-Drew Galloway d. Tyrus Clay(w/ Rockstar Spud) with the Future Shock(double-underhook DDT) to retain the Heavyweight Title (7:56).
-Rosemary Rush(w/ Crazzy Steve) d. Gail Kim after Maria Kanellis-Bennett distracted Gail, leading to Rosemary blinding Gail with green mist and winning with an F-5 (6:09).
-The Decay(Abyss & Crazzy Steve)(w/ Rosemary Rush) d. Beer Money(Bobby Roode & James Storm) in a Valley Of Shadows Match to win the Tag Team Titles; Rosemary stopped Roode with a low blow and Abyss chokeslammed him onto thumbtacks, leading to the Decay members dogpiling Roode for the three-count (10:30 aired).
-Bram Cameron d. Eric Young in a falls-count-anywhere match to win the King Of The Mountain Title.  Bram stopped an attempted piledriver off the apron with a low blow, then finished with the Brighter Side Of Suffering(elevated DDT) off the ring apron and through a table (6:30).
-Mike Bennett(w/ Maria Kanellis-Bennett) d. Ethan Carter III.  Maria interrupted the referee's count after EC3 hit the One-Percenter(headlock driver).  Bennett recovered to win by kicking off the turnbuckles to counter a cobra clutch, flipping on top for the pin (11:13 aired).  This was EC3's first one-on-one pinfall/submission loss in TNA.

Comedy Part 677: Vacation Week Begins

Location: Westport Funny Bone
Emcee: Nathan Orton
After: Andrew Topping
Before: Brandon Barr

Honestly wasn't holding high expectations for making the list...I went on late(third-to-last) so I had some time to figure out my set.  Had a few newer bits to try out, mostly based on my transportation adventures in the past few weeks...I feel like my set went over pretty well, so woo.  I've got a full week ahead of me:  Showcase at Helium tonight and possibly Crow's Nest after that, Hey Guys and probably Fitz's on Thursday, and Effingham(!) on Friday...hope to see you at a show!

Sunday WIA Results From Swansea, IL

-The show started with ring announcer Ben Simon interviewing Big Jim Hoffarth; he wanted to get his hands on either Jimmy D or Bobby D, but neither was in the house.  Hoffarth challenged one or both of them to a match at the next event (May 22nd).
-After that, The Landlord called Heavyweight Champion Kevin Lee Davidson to the ring and offered him a chance to join his side.  When K.L.D. refused, Landlord backed down and seemed to leave peacefully...

-"Infamous" Tyler Copeland d. LaMarcus Clinton(w/ Kandi Kane); the referee was knocked down and Copeland brought a chair into the ring, only for Kandi to take the weapon away from him.  However, she set the chair down on the mat and allowed Copeland to finish off L.M.C. with a curbstomp onto the chair, leading to the three-count when the official recovered (8:27).  Copeland and Kandi left together.

-Leone Mephisto won a triple threat match with Ace Hawkins and Billy McNeil to retain the Interstate Title.  Before the match, Mephisto refused Prince Moses' challenge and said that he had to earn his title rematch.  Mephisto took advantage of the no-DQ environment of the bout by handcuffing Hawkins to the ropes, then finished off McNeil with the Air Raid Crash with feet on the ropes for extra leverage (12:08).  A frustrated Hawkins challenged Mephisto to face him one-on-one in May.
-Heavyweight Champion Kevin Lee Davidson vs. Pro Wrestling Epic Heavyweight Champion Brandon Aarons ended in a no-contest when Tyler Copeland and Barackus attacked both men (12:48).  The Landlord joined Copeland & Barackus in the ring and told K.L.D. that he would regret turning him down.

Comedy Part 676: Hey Guys, There's More To Watch Than Sports

Location: Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee: Josh Funneman
After: Jeremy Hellwig
Before: Ray Wilkins

Live comedy has a lot of competition around this time of year:  Spring weather, the start of baseball season, and hockey playoffs.  Fortunately, we had a decent turnout for open-mic night(partially thanks to Gary Rittenhouse) and I had an opportunity to work on some newer material.  Josh rightly pointed out that I was more upset about Chyna's death than Prince's...har har.  In transportation news, my car may have a stay of execution...will keep you posted on that.  Dale Jones is at Hey Guys Comedy this weekend and I HIGHLY recommended checking out one of his shows...Friday at 8, Saturday at 7 and 9:15!

WLW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's World League Wrestling show at the Race Wrestling Arena in Troy, Missouri.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

I chose WLW instead of SICW on Saturday since it was closer to home:  About an hour to Troy as opposed to almost two hours to Cape Girardeau.  (NOTE:  The Cape show results have been added to the blog, a few posts down.)  However, my transportation plans became more complicated when my car's warning lights lit up like a pinball machine on Saturday afternoon.  I got my car to the repair place with the expectation that I would only need a rental for a day or so...as it turned out, the specific part for my specific car is somewhat of a bitch to find, so I'm still rolling with the rental at the moment.  The only vehicle available at the rental place was a minivan...so for all the people who joke that I look like I should be driving a van, I have been doing thusly for the past few days.  (Et tu, rental place?)

At any rate, I took Ben Simon up on his offer to carpool, which presented another fun time as I attempted to navigate the crowded Central West End in an unfamiliar vehicle.  After parking about a mile away from Ben's location and hiking the rest of the way, I rode with him to Troy MO for the evening's festivities.  The attendance turnout was a bit lower but still decent...they had a legit sellout in February when Ted DiBiase was the special guest and I expect the same in May when Ricky Steamboat is in the house.

Your ring announcer was Brian Thompson; your referee was Richard White.

Jayden Fenix vs. Mike Outlaw, Jr. Heavyweight Title Tournament Semifinal:  Fenix had bested "The Yoga Monster" Mike Sydal in the first round; Outlaw had used surprisingly underhanded tactics to get past former tag team partner Justin D'Air.  I saw these two in a match at Dynamo Pro Wrestling last year, though Outlaw was the fan favorite in that case with Fenix as the rulebreaker.  These two seem to work well together and this was no exception; with fewer matches on the show than the SICW event the previous night, the matches generally got more time.  The finish saw Fenix tie up Outlaw in a lucha-style pinning combination, ending with a crucifix on the mat in 10:39.  The tournament finals were announced as taking place on the May 14th show.

The Math Magician vs. Superstar Steve Fender:  I was far too proud of my shoutout to the masked man:  "You've got his number!"  *ducks thrown objects*  This was far, far more competitive than I was expecting...to the point that Heavyweight Champion Trevor Murdoch ran in for the DQ in 8:40.  Didn't see THAT coming...Leland Race made the save and Commissioner Matt Murphy announced a tag match for later in the night.  The originally scheduled main event was Race teaming with Roy Lewis against Murdoch & Fender...then that was changed to Race being in a gauntlet match against Karim Brigante, Fender, and possibly more opponents to earn his rematch with Murdoch.  (I think Lewis and the rest of the Troy Athletic Club were at NWA Central States Championship Wrestling for the evening.)  In essence, they defaulted to their previously-scheduled main event with Math Magician in Lewis' spot.

Jon Webb vs. "Kickin'" Kyle Roberts, Jr. Heavyweight Title Tournament Semifinal:  Webb defeated "The Millenial" Danny Adams in the quarterfinals; "The" Ace Hawkins defeated Roberts by pulling the tights during a rollup attempt, but Harley Race overruled the decision after the fact and Roberts advanced to the semis by default.  (Presumably Hawkins was otherwise engaged, thus the match change.)  The outcome seemed to be a foregone conclusion, but it was a fine short match; Webb won after a flying knee strike to the back of the head in 6:38.  Jayden Fenix hit the ring for the mutual-respect-yadda-yadda setup for the finals...only to blast Webb with a cheapshot.  Fenix said he was tired of being in the shadow of the other Black Hand Warriors (Tag Champs Michael Magnuson & Dave DeLorean were absent on this night) and would make his own name at Webb's expense.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Mountain Dew, Pepsi, and a bottle of water.

Stacey O'Brien vs. Miss Monica Passeri(w/ Karim Brigante):  This was billed as a top-contender's match for the next shot at Women's Champion "Miss Natural" Heather Patera.  I don't know much about Monica's wrestling background or how much experience she has, though she has a few matches on YouTube; this was my first time seeing one of her matches in person.  I had commented on the women's match at the previous WLW Troy show being on the short side; in contrast, this one went longer than expected.  (Not necessarily a bad thing...as I've learned from comedy, the only way to get used to working longer matches is to work longer matches.)  Karim didn't have a match for the night and took it out on Stacey on a few occasions.  That finally brought out Kyle Roberts to fight him off, and the distraction allowed Stacey to win after a Codebreaker in 11:35(!).

Leland Race & The Math Magician vs. Heavyweight Champion Trevor Murdoch & Superstar Steve Fender:  Math Magician was prepared enough to have two sets of gear in case he had to wrestle twice.  Murdoch turned on Race last August and then cheated him out of the Heavyweight Title, so Race has been fighting his way back to a title rematch.  A lot of solid in-ring competitors in one match made for a really good main event; the masked man seemed slightly out of place but he held his own.  The finish saw Murdoch shove Race off the top rope, leading to Fender getting the surprise win over the former champion via brainbuster in 14:22.

Post-match:  Murdoch's comments were interesting as he seemingly complimented his tag team partner and talked condescendingly about him at the same time...he berated Race for being unable to even beat his tag team partner, let alone be worthy of another title opportunity.  Perhaps that would open the door for the possibility of Fender challenging Murdoch...we shall see.  Matt Murphy announced that Race vs. Fender would take place at the May 14th show...with Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat as the special referee.  Sweet.  Will need to check my calendar on that one...tickets will probably sell VERY quickly.

Since the evening was young(the show ended right around the two-hour mark), Ben Simon and myself made our way to the Peacock Loop Diner in University City for some post-game dining.  I opted for the "Finals Breakfast Sandwich", which was essentially a classier version of a McGriddle...good stuff.  We also watched the first part of Saturday Night Live (sans audio).

In an update to my transportation situation, my car's troubles turned out to be far more expensive than expected...I'm already paying a ton for the work already completed and it would cost even more to fix everything.  Alas, it appears as though the 2009 Chevy Aveo has been on its final voyage...it carried me through many a wrestling and comedy excursion.  There's never been a right time to say goodbye, has there?  Shopping for the next edition of the Patmobile will progress in the next week or so...any recommendations are highly appreciated.  Thankfully I'm on vacation from work next week.

This coming weekend, the main wrestling shows in the Midwest are slightly out of my range.  Dynamo Pro Wrestling will be in Columbia, MO with Davey Richards & Angelina Love in the house, plus High Risk Wrestling returns to Warsaw, MO.  Wrestling Invades America returns to Swansea on Sunday and that's close enough to home for me to attend...woo.  The month of April wraps up with Pro Wrestling Championship Series in Granite City on Saturday the 30th...also Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling has a show in Millstadt, IL with the MIGHTY MIDGETS~! in the house.  Elsewhere in the area:  Gateway Elite Wrestling will be in Camdenton, MO that Saturday, New Breed Wrestling will be in Eldon, MO, and NWA Central States Championship Wrestling has a show in Lebanon, MO.

That's my special comment for this, the fifteenth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2016.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

Glad to get out and take my mind off real-life things...much appreciation to Landon Meyer for doing the driving.  Didn't have anything specific in mind for my performances on this night...I paged through my notebook and jotted down a few jokes that I felt like pulling out of the mothballs.  I got a six-minute set on the main show and I actually underprepared, but I got through it okay...the audience wasn't that big(curse nice weather and sports), but the people there enjoyed the show.  Next up for me comedically is Hey Guys Comedy on Thursday.

SICW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Friday's Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling show at the Community Center in East Carondelet, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

The personal schedule has been a lot busier as of late; between comedy and other wrestling shows, I hadn't been to an SICW event since December.  The promotion had a rare doubleheader weekend with a special event in Cape Girardeau on Saturday, so their monthly visit to East Carondelet was scheduled for Friday.  I have kept up to speed on SICW through Wrestling Explosion:  Flash Flanagan regained the Classic Title in January, ending Kahagas' one-month reign and becoming the first three-time champion.

I got to the show relatively early and crossed paths with Rebecca Raze for the first time in several years.  I think the last time I had seen her was at one of her last matches (at Independent Hardcore Wrestling against The Great Cheyenne).  SICW seems to have finally switched to individual theme music for wrestlers; for a long time, they played unconnected music as both sides made their entrances (since the formal introductions were done with both sides in the ring).

Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus; your referees were Denny Thomas, Jay King, and special guest Earl Hebner (who was in the house for autograph signing with his twin brother Dave).

"Memories Of Elvis" star Steve Davis sang the National Anthem; after that, they had a ten-bell salute to Blackjack Mulligan and Balls Mahoney (R.I.P.).

Bobby D vs. Attila Khan(w/ Travis Cook):  Travis gave a grand reintroduction to Khan, who hadn't been seen in SICW since his cage match loss to Gary Jackson in December.  Other than a brief flurry of offense by D (somersault plancha included), Khan dominated most of this opening bout.  Khan pulled him up from a pin attempt after the inverted DDT, then hit the finisher a second time for the easy win in 3:02.

The dynamic duo of Terry Funk and Larry Matysik did a random draw to determine the first-round matches in the Funk Title Tournament; the winner would be guaranteed a shot at the Classic Wrestling Championship.  The draw produced several interesting bouts...

Ron Powers vs. Big Jim Hoffarth, Terry Funk Title Tournament Quarterfinal:  I didn't expect a lot of technical wizardry in this one, but the two heavyweights did start the match with an exchange of holds.  Of course, it quickly turned into a slugfest that culminated in two straight instances of simultaneous clotheslines.  The power game was the deciding factor as Ron delivered a huge released German suplex for the win in 4:17; the two shook hands after the match.  Given the tournament field, Powers seemed like the clear favorite to emerge victorious...but a few new wrinkles would surface in the big picture.

"Unstable" Dave Vaughn vs. Ax Allwardt(w/ Big Daddy), Terry Funk Title Tournament Quarterfinal:  Big Daddy managed both men, so he entered on his own after both wrestlers made their way to the ring.  Vaughn returned to wrestling as a member of Big Daddy's new stable as the veteran manager returned to his rulebreaking ways; the group also includes Bubba Troll, who was absent on this night.  Vaughn had said that Big Daddy got him out of an insane asylum; he had "SANE" written on his wrist tape, though his demeanor would indicate otherwise.  Vaughn had only recently returned to action after a layoff of several years, so it may take some time for him to get back into prime ring shape.  With a matchup of two rulebreakers, the fans weren't too invested in the bout; Vaughn seemed to be the lesser of two evils in this case.  Big Daddy loudly proclaimed that he didn't care who won as he got the winner's share of the purse money in either case; however, he distracted the referee after Vaughn hit his signature spear.  That distraction enabled Ax to hit Vaughn with his chain behind the referee's back, scoring the tainted win in 5:54.  On the heels of Vaughn and Ax's tag team loss in March and this outcome, Big Daddy fired Vaughn from his stable...but a YouTube video showed Vaughn attacking Sean Vincent later in the night, so that feud will continue.  At any rate, Ax was set to face Ron Powers in the semifinals.

"The Fury" Jason Vaughn & "Dead Sexy" Daniel Gunner vs. Britton Tucker & Waco:  In the tradition of Wrestling At The Chase, this tag match had two referees; Earl Hebner was the main referee and Jay King was on the floor.  Vaughn and Tucker are newcomers to SICW; I first heard of Tucker from his days in World League Wrestling.  Vaughn(market confusion~!) recently started with the promotion and I don't know much about him.  I would have expected the official's roles to be reversed, but it was Hebner who was knocked down during the match's closing moments.  Vaughn small-packaged Tucker and Jay King entered the ring to count the fall in 8:40...all righty then.

Intermission~!  The Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm) for the night was a cheeseburger and two sodas(Mountain Dew & Pepsi).  I scored a leftover hamburger after the show, so bonus.

Moondog Rover stopped by the East Carondelet Community Center; he was a regular for the promotion before the split with the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance.  He's not one for lengthy talking segments, but he pushed his return to in-ring competition at the following night's event in Cape Girardeau.

"Ironman" Ken Kasa vs. "The Icon" Chris Hargas(w/ Travis Cook), Terry Funk Title Tournament Quarterfinal:  Kasa was booted from the Travis Cook Organization and it was his old friend Hargas who dished out the beating to accentuate that executive action.  Kasa was looking for payback, but Hargas attacked him from behind as he was entering the ringside area.  Hargas hit him across the back with a chair for the fun of it...and this happened before the opening bell, so it put Kasa at a several disadvantage.  Kasa fought back and nearly won with a rear naked choke, but Travis reached through the ropes to rake Kasa's eyes out of the referee's line of sight.  The fight repeatedly spilled out of the ring, finally resulting in a double countout in 7:12...with a loaded card like this one, I figured something like this would happen.  As it stood, no match on this show lasted over ten minutes and the show still went fairly long.

Promoter Herb Simmons interviewed the special guests for the evening:  Terry Funk and Director Of Affairs Cowboy Bob Orton.  Classic Champion Flash Flanagan entered the ring with some harsh words for the legends and said he had PLANNED to make a name for himself at their expense...but circumstances dictated otherwise as he has a torn rotator cuff.  Flash admitted that he's not cleared to compete and had to surrender the championship...he seemed to be in the process of a turn to fan favoritism in recent months, mostly through common enemies with the other "good guys" on the roster.  Simmons, Funk, and Orton mutually agreed that the winner of the night's tournament would earn the vacant championship...it seemed like the tourney winner would be next in line for the belt anyway.

"Your Canadian Hero" Sean Vincent vs. "The Tokyo Monster" Kahagas(w/ Travis Cook), Terry Funk Title Tournament Quarterfinal:  The winner of this match would get a bye to the finals due to the Kasa-Hargas double countout.  Travis was on fire with his pre-match promo as Kahagas was his last horse in the race.  While Vincent had a good run of momentum in the previous months, this seemed like a foregone conclusion as the former titleholder was driven to regain his gold.  Kahagas got the win after a huge lariat in 6:22...and Vincent's night got worse as he was attacked by Vaughn outside the building (as noted earlier).

Ron Powers vs. Ax Allwardt(w/ Big Daddy), Terry Funk Title Tournament Semifinal:  Yeahhhhh, I didn't see Ax having much of a chance here.  This was a good quick sprint; Big Daddy's distraction backfired this time as Powers gave Ax a taste of his own chain, notching the victory in 5:07 to go to the finals.

"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson vs. "Volatile" Curtis Wylde(w/ Wyldefyre):  This stemmed from Wylde wanting to rebound from his cage match loss to Sean Vincent in December, making a statement by attacking Jackson after his own cage match with Attila Khan.  They caused each other's eliminations in a six-man tag, then Wylde got suspended for attacking a referee during a singles bout between the two.  Wylde bought a ticket to the March show and attacked Jackson AGAIN...Herb Simmons wanted to fire him outright, but Gary convinced him to let them settle things in the ring.

Wyldefyre put herself between Wylde and Jackson at the opening bell and was a constant nuisance for Gary...Wylde repeatedly used her as a human shield whenever Gary gave chase.  The end came when Wyldefyre interjected herself AGAIN as Jackson was preparing to finish off her man.  Gary avoided her slap attempt and picked her up to throw at Curtis Wylde, causing her to deliver an unintentional rana on Wylde!  However, the referee made the unusual decision to call for the bell, disqualifying Jackson in 9:12 for using Wyldefyre as a weapon.  The Wyldes celebrated their ill-begotten win while Gary confronted the referee over his thought process...that brought Herb Simmons into the situation.  Gary wanted one more shot at Wylde and Herb made it so for the May 21st show...with Wyldefyre locked in a cage to keep her out of things!

Ron Powers vs. "The Tokyo Monster" Kahagas(w/ Travis Cook), Terry Funk Title Tournament Final:  The tournament was originally to determine the next challenger to Flash Flanagan's Classic Wrestling Championship, but Flanagan's injury and forfeiture meant that the tournament winner would become the new titleholder.  It didn't take long for this battle of heavy hitters to get out of hand...the two brawled out of the ring and all the way around the Community Center, whacking each other with chairs and other furniture.  The referee allowed a lot of leeway with the stakes involved in the matchup, so they eventually made it back to the ring as the match continued.  Seemingly out of nowhere, Powers hit the RKO for the win in 6:05 to become the NEWWWWW SICW Classic Wrestling Champion!

After the match, Flash Flanagan entered the ring...tension ensued, but he graciously handed the title belt over to Powers and then beat down Travis Cook with his kendo stick.  That brought out the rest of Cook's troops(Attila Khan and Chris Hargas), but Terry Funk and Cowboy Bob Orton hit the ring to help Powers fight them off!  Once the dust settled, Herb proposed that Flash give the belt to the tournament's namesake Funk; Funk then presented it properly to the new champion Ron Powers to close the show!

This was an eventful evening as we were simply expecting to see a new top contender crowned, but instead we saw Ron Powers become only the second multi-time SICW titleholder.  The weekend wasn't over for SICW as they had the following night's matches in Cape Girardeau to look forward to; Funk and Orton were in the house for that event as well (results to be posted once I get them).

For reasons both geographic and mechanical, my Saturday went a bit differently...but that's another story for another time.  Same Pat-Time, Same Pat-Channel...

That's my special comment for this, the fourteenth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2016.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

-"The Fury" Jason Vaughn & "Dead Sexy" Daniel Gunner d. Britton Tucker & Waco; Earl Hebner and Jay King were the referees for the bout.  Hebner was accidentally knocked down, but King entered the ring to count the fall as Vaughn small-packaged Tucker (8:40).

-"Volatile" Curtis Wylde(w/ Wyldefyre) d. "Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson by DQ.  Wylde constantly used his valet as a shield during the match, leading to Wyldefyre blatantly entering the ring to confront Jackson.  Gary avoided a slap attempt and threw Wyldefyre at her man, causing her to execute an inadvertent rana on Wylde!  The referee made the unusual call that Jackson was disqualified for using the valet as a weapon (9:12).  Gary asked Herb Simmons to rectify the situation and a rematch was set for the May 21st show...with Wyldefyre locked in a cage!
-Tournament Final:  Ron Powers d. "The Tokyo Monster" Kahagas(w/ Travis Cook) after the RKO to win the vacant Classic Title (6:05).  The match was a wild brawl that spilled out of the ring and saw each man attack the other with steel chairs.  Afterwards, Flash Flanagan entered the ring for a staredown with the new champion, but graciously handed over his title and beat down Travis Cook with his kendo stick.  Travis brought out Khan and Hargas to back up Kahagas, but Terry Funk and Cowboy Bob Orton entered the fray and helped Powers and Flanagan clear the ring!  After the dust settled, Flash handed the title belt to Funk in honor of his namesake tournament and Funk then presented the championship to the tournament winner Ron Powers!

Comedy Part 673: Hey Guys, It's M.C. P.B.

Location: Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee: Me
Lineup: Marcelis Flores, John Dillon, Joe "The Animal" Lancey, Rich Braun, Jesse Hickman, Brian McDowell, Tabi Davis, George Haynes, Lucas Hinderliter, Spencer Tegtmeyer, Ryan Dalton

A modest but fun audience was in the house for open-mic night at Hey Guys Comedy...mostly brought by two of the comedians.  I hosted the show and did a shorter set than usual to kick things off...there were several newer faces on the show, including one first-timer and a couple of second-timers.  I used a few newer lines with varying degrees of effectiveness...hey, that's what open-mic shows are for.  I have a work vacation at the end of April, so I hope to check out some of the comedy shows in the St. Louis area that I don't regularly attend.  Next up for me is Tuesday night at either Helium or the Funny Bone...

Lucha Underground Season 2 Episode 12

-Commentators:  Matt Striker & Vampiro.
-Backstage in promoter Dario Cueto's office:  Dario put Brian Cage on the same trios team as Johnny Mundo & Taya Valkyrie.  Cage wants a one-on-one match with Mundo...but Dario likes his idea better.  Taya is unimpressed by Dario's position.  Dario notes that Son Of Havoc, Angélico, & Ivelisse Velez once hated each other but they turned out to be a pretty good team(and current Trios Champions)...and they all want championship gold.  Dario blows off Cage's catchphrase drop...heh.
-Killshot d. Argenis with an electric chair dropped into a half-nelson Michinoku Driver (4:36).
-Backstage:  Dragon Azteca Jr. confronted Black Lotus in front of Dario's office...Lotus claimed that Heavyweight Champion Matanza Cueto was the one who did away with Azteca Sr.  Inside the office, Dario met with newcomer Daga and pondered the redistribution of the Aztec Medallions.  Daga would compete for one of the medals in his debut against El Texano Jr....Daga seemed to be pretty sure of himself.
-For Aztec Medallion #1:  El Texano Jr. d. Daga with the sitout powerbomb (7:04).
-Elsewhere:  Mil Muertes meditates as Catrina Perez informs him that The Disciples Of Death(Barrio Negro, El Siniestro De La Muerte, & Trece) will be in the trios tournament next week...and Mil gets his title shot at Matanza next week as well.
-Trios Tournament:  Rey Misterio Jr., Prince Puma, & Dragon Azteca Jr. d. Johnny Mundo, Brian Cage, & Taya Valkyrie when Puma pinned Mundo after the 630 Splash (12:53).
-Backstage:  Dario talked to his brother Matanza in his cell...next week's clash with Mil Muertes will be his toughest test to date, but he will make him proud.
