PGP Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about last Saturday's Proving Ground Pro show at the VFW Hall in Taylor Springs, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

My free time has become a bit sparse lately, so I've been late on these commentaries...at least I'm getting this one done before the next wrestling show I attend.  My choices for this particular Saturday were Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling's monthly offering in East Carondelet, IL and Proving Ground Pro...as it turned out, I missed a title change as "Ironman" Ken Kasa won the SICW Classic Title from "The Icon" Chris Hargas.  They'll have a best-of-three-falls rematch at the next East Carondelet show on November 4th.

The drive was relatively uneventful, led by the GPS in my smartphone...though I drove right past the venue and had to double back.  (I was expecting it to be on the right and it was on the left...whoops.)  The attendance wasn't that great, but the fans enjoyed the show...I hope they continue to run in Taylor Springs as it's the closest the promotion gets to me, but they'll have to draw better in the future.

Your ring announcer was Chris Roedel(on call from Dynamo Pro Wrestling).  Your referees were Scott Ramsey & Richard White.

Dakota Wrestleford vs. "The Upperclassman" Cody Herrich:  I initially misheard Herrich's name as "Tarek"and tweeted as such; my bad.  Dakota has a nerd gimmick with a white shirt, tie, suspenders, and a white-guy afro...he used an inhaler a few times when he got short of breath.  This was announced as a preshow match for newcomers and both guys looked solid; Dakota won with a modified elevated DDT(landing his opponent in X-Factor position) in 6:54.

One of the promoters announced that Corbin Blaze was injured, so the scheduled mixed tag match was off(he was supposed to team with Savanna Stone against Aaron Dzinic and Rahne Victoria).  Enter Dzinic and Victoria; Rahne complained about Savanna getting the night off due to outside circumstances.  It was announced that Savanna and Rahne would face each other one-on-one...as for Dzinic, he would be added to the scheduled Kyle King vs. Bailey Bright match to make it a triple threat.  Oh, and as long as Rahne was out at the ringside area, that match is NEXT!

Savanna Stone vs. Rahne Victoria:  I've seen the majority of the history between these two; both ladies have been doing very well after a mere six months in the wrestling business.  Their whole careers are ahead of them and they have plenty of time to learn and grow.  There were a few hesitant spots but still a fine outing from these two...as announced prior to the match, the winner would face Laynie Luck at the big PGP show in November.  Rahne ripped up a fan's pro-Savanna sign at one point...that's just not nice.  Savanna survived Rahne's Flatliner finisher, but Rahne kept up the pressure until being caught with a sunset flip out of the corner for the flash pin in 8:41; Savanna moves on to face Laynie Luck next month!

"The Master Of Hairflips" Brandon Aarons vs. "The Filth King" Nick Brubaker for the Dynamo Pro Heavyweight Title:  Aarons was a bit cockier on this night as he threw out his scheduled open challenge...the answer came in the form of the central Illinois standout Brubaker, who was sporting a new green tint to his hair.  It seemed unlikely that Aarons would lose his title outside of DPW, but Brubaker gave him a run for his money...it's hard to believe that Aarons is nearing the one-year mark of his title reign.  In the end, Aarons bent the rules a bit to achieve victory, rolling up Brubaker with a handful of tights in 11:30.  In a side note, his hair did look as impeccable as always...

Bailey Bright vs. "K-Dos" Kyle King vs. Aaron Dzinic:  I've only seen King a handful of times, dating back to Full Throttle Wrestling; I think he still works with the same crew in World Powerhouse Wrestling on occasion.  He travels from Kansas City where he regularly competes for Kansas City Xtreme Wrestling...I've heard of a receding hairline, but King has what I can only describe as "proceeding sideburns".  Bright was the lone fan favorite in this one, though King and Dzinic weren't really on the same page for any length of time.  King apparently refers to his behind-the-back Pedigree move as the Human Centipede...good to know.  Bright was able to edge out a victory, pinning King after a Zigzag in 7:47...nicely done.

Kevin Lee Davidson vs. "The Ice Pick" Vic Capri:  Capri isn't too well-known in St. Louis circles, but he debuted in 1998 and was trained by "The Fallen Angel/Almighty" Christopher Daniels...he's the very definition of a well-traveled veteran.  The last time I saw him at a show was one of the early High Risk Wrestling events when he defeated Ace Steel, then went on to challenge A.C.H. for the Heavyweight Title.  Davidson dominated with his size and power advantage, but Capri showed impressive power by suplexing K.L.D. on more than one occasion.  The experience was on Capri's side, but sometimes that's not quite enough to achieve victory...K.L.D. won with his signature spinebuster in 12:13.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Cheeseburger, Fritos, root beer, Pepsi.  (I didn't get a chance to eat dinner before I left the house because I slept late...weekends seem to be my time for catching up on the Z's...)

Firelord Draconis vs. "The Bad Wolf" Blake Belakis:  The winner of this match would move on to the November show to challenge Space Monkey for the Cutting Edge Title; Space Monkey recently defeated Belakis for that championship in a triple threat match that also involved Draconis.  Draconis is a masked competitor who I've heard about but had never seen in person; he used the Gangrel theme for his entrance.  Belakis primarly competes in central Illinois but occasionally ventures for the St. Louis area; he held the High Risk Wrestling Title for several months before the promotion moved out to western Missouri.  Belakis targeted Draconis' arm when he was in control of the match...when the tide turned, Belakis attempted to use his infamous spike but the referee took it away from him...that allowed Draconis to hit a mid-air Flatliner(a la Baron Corbin's End Of Days) for a near-fall!  The two fought on the top rope until Draconis knocked Belakis back to the mat, then followed up with a cross-bodyblock off the top for the win in 8:50!  Draconis will challenge Space Monkey for the Cutting Edge Title in November!

C.J. Esparza vs. Jake Lander:  I hadn't seen Lander before; Esparza is known for his tag team partnership with Brett Gakiya in Zero Gravity but is an accomplished singles competitor as well.  This was a battle of fan favorites and they had a really good match.  The finish to this one was similiar to the previous contest, only Lander was in a seated position on the mat when Esparza delivered his cross-body off the top...that got the pinfall in 10:35.

Mario Crivello & Derek St. Holmes vs. Paco Gonzalez & "Pretty Reckless" Everett Connors for the Tag Team Titles:  I don't know for sure why Johnny Alves was absent from this event, but Crivello was given the option of choosing a substitute partner for the night.  St. Holmes is a veteran who I'd previously only seen as a commentator for All-American Wrestling, but he still competes at Wisconsin indies.  He brought a very old-school style to the table, as he has been known as the "Thinking Man's Wrestler".  Fans heckled Crivello with chants of "Luigi"...come on, clearly he's that guy's brother.  I couldn't tell you about Alves' exact status so I didn't know if they'd switch the belts to a steadier team...in this era of "gotta swerve people and be unpredictable, logic be damned", you can't really rule out anything.  Connors went for a sunset flip on St. Holmes, but Derek blocked the move and hung onto Crivello for illegal leverage to get the cheap pin in 16:54...the titles stayed put for a little bit longer.

The schedule doesn't get any lighter...the next three weekends will be jam-packed as everyone will be scheduling their shows around the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.  This weekend had two Dynamo Pro outings in St. Louis, MO as well as a Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling event in Caseyville, IL.  Next weekend has Pro Wrestling Epic's annual show in Brownstown, IL on Friday...on Saturday, SICW returns to East Carondelet, IL while World League Wrestling has their monthly offering in Troy, MO with Ron Simmons in the house.  Sunday will be highlighted by the National Wrasslin' League's visit to the area as they have a show in O'Fallon, Missouri.

That's my special comment for this, the fifty-third wrestling show I've attended in the year 2017.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

Aarons superkicked him off the apron, but as the ref’s attention was on Roller, Makaze threw a fireball in Aarons’ face! Makaze made the cover and the referee turned around to count three, bringing an end to Aarons’ eleven-month title reign (14:35)!

Comedy Parts 780-1: Hey Guys, Two More In The Books

Location:  Helium Comedy Club
Emcee:  Nathan Orton
After:  Ron Finger
Before:  Lucas Hinderliter

Location:  Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee:  Me
Lineup:  Lucas Hinderliter, Adam Hoppe, Keith Hughes, Cuvi, Andy Hamilton, Brian McDowell, Vincent Opper, Rich Braun, Gary Schultz, Tom Brown, Jerry Wahl, Joe "The Animal" Lancey, Tony Reeve, Kevin Bunetic, Sydney Adeniyi

I had a full week of comedy open-mics with the Funny Bone on Tuesday and then the weekly shows at Helium and Hey Guys.  Both shows had solid turnouts and my sets went pretty well, though I didn't get as much new material on the table as I would have liked.  Hosting doesn't give me much time to think over my set, though I had a few things planned out...plus I got in a few good lines between comics.  Not much else to say, I suppose...

William Regal congratulated Cross with the NXT Women's Title belt in the ring...that brought in Peyton, Ember Moon, and Kairi Sane for the big showdown.
-Aleister Black's scheduled match never officially started as "The Velveteen Dream" Patrick Clark attacked him.
-Andrade "Cien" Almas(w/ Zelina Vega) d. Roderick Strong; Zelina caught Strong with a flying rana off the apron behind the referee's back, sending him into the ring steps.  That allowed Almas to capitalize with the hammerlock DDT for the win (8:29 aired).  Adam Cole & reDRagon(Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish) had a chat with Strong after the match, once again offering him a spot in their group.
-Next week:  Sanity vs. Authors Of Pain(Akam Dhinsa & Rezar Selmani) for the NXT Tag Team Titles.

Comedy Part 779: Change Of Scenery

Location:  Westport Funny Bone/Backstreet Jazz & Blues Club
Emcee:  Quentin Wilbert
After:  Meredith Hopping
Before:  Brandon Barr

The previous week's open-mic at the Funny Bone had been cancelled due to a water main break...the water damage was still being repaired, so the previous week's shows had all taken place next door at Backstreet.  We had a decent audience for the show and since things were still in a state of disarray, they just decided to put everyone on the list with slightly reduced time (three and a half minutes instead of the usual four).  My main goal was to work on a newer joke (about holidays to honor low-income meals) and it went far smoother than it did last Thursday...so score in that regard.  All in all, the set went well...hopefully I can make it two-for-two as I'm on the list for Helium tomorrow night.  Woo.

Glory Pro Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about last Sunday's Glory Pro Wrestling show at the Spaulding Hall Club in Alton, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

It was a full weekend of wrestling with afternoon shows on both Saturday and Sunday...this one had been built up for a while and Michael Elgin had promised a major announcement about the anniversary show in February.  He had dropped some major hints that set expectations very high...would it live up to the hype?  The turnout told the story as Glory Pro had another packed house in Alton...cue my claustrophobia.

Your ring announcer was Kevin Harvey; your referees were C-Lo and Richard White.

The Pride("The Incredible Primal Prodigy" Matt Kenway(Look At Him After Dark) & Aaron Dzinic) vs. Super Future(Xavier Walker & Palmer Cruise):  Walker made his Glory Pro debut in August; I had first seen him and Cruise at Proving Ground Pro in July against Alpha Class.  They had the size advantage over the upstart duo of Kenway and Jeremy, err, Dzinic.  While the fans were still not fond of Kenway, Dzinic got a good reaction for his late-match rally.  The Pride's teamwork made the difference as Kenway picked up Cruise in electric-chair position, then dropped him forward into a Diamond Cutter by Dzinic...Dzinic got the pinfall after that in 8:30.

"Unbreakable" Michael Elgin & "Pretty Reckless" Everett Connors vs. The Boys From Jollyville(T-Money & Nasty Russ Myers) vs. No New Friends(Kevin Lee Davidson & "The Millenial" Danny Adams) for the United Glory Tag Team Titles:  Elgin & Connors scored a surprise title win over Davey Vega & Stephen Wolf(subbing for the injured Mat Fitchett) in August, but their first title defense would be no walk in the park.  Adams played some mind games as he shouted at Elgin "You're not my real dad!"  K.L.D. and Adams seemed to have the momentum heading into the bout, but the Boys From Jollyville had a lot to prove after coming up short against The Besties In The World in July.  As for Elgin & Connors, they were looking to prove that their title win over a makeshift team was no fluke.  One of the highlights of the match saw T-Money deliver a POUNCE on Connors, sending him flying over the top rope onto the other four men!  The champions got it together for the win as Elgin powerbombed Adams, setting him up for Connors to deliver a legdrop off the top rope for the victory in 14:58!

Savanna Stone vs. Kylie Rae:  This was a qualifying match for a women's tournament known as the Making Towns Classic, organized by Papa Hales and "Making Towns Guy" from Twitter.  Savanna was sporting new gear for the weekend and this was a big opportunity for her...I wasn't too familiar with Kylie Rae, but she comes out to the classic Pokemon theme and has Pikachu-themed gear, so I'm good with that.  Given that Savanna(and Rahne Victoria) only have six months of experience and Savanna is only seventeen years of age, she's already doing extremely well and the sky's the limit for her potential...I look forward to seeing what she and her cohorts can do.  Savanna showed a bit more of an "edge" in this match, which I hadn't seen before...it showed me that she'd be capable of filling a "rulebreaking" role down the line.  Despite that, she scored the upset win with a floatover rollup out of the corner in 8:37 to qualify for the Making Towns Classic!

"The Stiff Robo Ginger" Gary Jay vs. "The Warhorse" Jake Parnell:  These two have been battling for months, including an epic time-limit draw over Parnell's Zero-One USA Jr. Heavyweight Title.  This bout wasn't quite as long as that one, but they brought the heavy artillery as the fans expected.  In the end, the former St. Louis Anarchy Champion emeged victorious with his trademark sliding forearm smash in 8:21...but things haven't quite been settled between the two as they'll meet again at the Glory Pro anniversary show in February.

D.J. Shiima Xion vs. Shigehiro Irie vs. "The Leader Of The Pack" Stephen Wolf vs. Tyler Matrix:  This could have gone in any number of directions.  Irie made it to the finals of the original Crown Of Glory Title tournament and had quickly become a crowd favorite.  D.J. Z's resume is well documented, particularly as a former TNA X-Division Champion...his light-up gear always leads me to joke "Your move, Justin D'Air".  Wolf had several impressive outings in Glory Pro, leading to him becoming a more consistent member of the roster.  Matrix's outings had been a bit more understated as he had been unable to secure victories in the deep talent pool of the company.  Of course, in this style of match just about anyone can steal a quick fall so it's anybody's ballgame.  That held true on this night as Matrix scored a surprising victory, pinning Irie after a Death Valley Driver onto the knee in 10:33.

Shane Strickland vs. "The Mad Dragon" Hakim Zane:  Strickland had been an independent standout for some time, but gained national exposure for his time as the masked Killshot in Lucha Underground.  I've found it interesting that Lucha Underground performers are pretty open about their masked identities...it's a badly-kept secret that Ricochet was Prince Puma, plus Jeff Cobb and Strickland openly sell Matanza Cueto and Killshot(respectively) merchandise.  The Hell Of War Match between Killshot and Dante/A.R. Fox was a spectacle to behold and I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it.  Zane was determined to spoil Strickland's St. Louis-area debut, but the King Of Swerve was not to be denied...one of the highlights of the match was Strickland delivering his flying double-stomp from the ropes with Zane seated in a chair on the floor!  Strickland picked up the win with his JML Driver(half-nelson Michinoku Driver) in 20:41...outstanding.

Going into intermission, Elgin came back out to announce the goings-on for the anniversary show in February.  First of all, current TNA/GFW X-Division Champion Trevor Lee would make his Glory Pro debut; he had competed for St. Louis Anarchy in the past.  Next up, Savanna Stone's impressive performance earlier in the night had earned her a big match at the anniversary show:  A one-on-one bout with current SHINE Champion Lufisto!  As for the big matchup for the show, Elgin had hinted that one of the participants would be Penta El Cero Miedo, but he was not available for the show.  His second choice, Rey Fenix, was not available for the show either...but the third time was the charm as A.R. Fox would be making his second Glory Pro appearance.  His opponent?  None other than former IWGP Heavyweight Champion Tetsuya Naito!  The line formed for advance tickets in a hurry...and they're going fast, so get yours before they're gone!  (Given that Naito is set to main-event Wrestle Kingdom against current titleholder Kazuchika Okada, Naito could very well be the champion going into the Glory Pro anniversary show!)

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Root beer and bottle of water.

The Besties In The World("The Miracle Worker" Davey Vega & "The Dirty Rook" Mat Fitchett) vs. The Lucha Brothers(Penta El Cero Miedo & Rey Fenix):  Glory Pro has been good about putting the title match on last, regardless of the names that are on the lineup...still, it was a surrpise to see this bout at this point on the card.  The two teams started throwing bombs right out of the gate and rarely slowed down...the accolades of all four men are well-documented, of course.  Fenix is the current All-American Wrestling Heavyweight Champion and Penta holds the AAW Heritage Title; the two were also the reigning Pro Wrestling Guerrilla Tag Team Champions at this time.  On top of that, Penta was the Gift Of The Gods Champion of Lucha Underground (en route to capturing their main title from Prince Puma this past week at Ultima Lucha Tres).  Vega & Fitchett have been tag team partners for a long time, but it's tough to get two people closer than brothers(as Fenix and Pentagon are).  The Besties survived some of the best that Fenix and Penta had to offer, but a flying double-stomp from Fenix added some oomph to Penta's package piledriver on Fitchett...that allowed Penta to score the hard-fought pinfall in 13:07.

"The Dad Bod" Sean Orleans vs. Brandon Espinosa:  This has been building since the inaugural Glory Pro show when Espy dispatched Orleans in short order, making the statement that Orleans did not belong there.  Orleans gained a measure of revenge by humiliating Espy at the big show in July with a schoolboy trip and rollup in five seconds flat.  The two had attacked each other repeatedly at Glory Pro shows this year and the stipulations were set for this bout:  If Orleans won, he got to shave Espinosa's head; if Espy won, Orleans would be forced to become Espy's manager.  This one was not going to end quickly like their previous bouts...it was definitely more story-driven than a lot of the other matches on the card.  Orleans nearly pulled out the win on a few occasions, but an untimely ref bump meant that no one was there to count when Orleans got the schoolboy trip and rollup.  As the official recovered, Espy delivered a blatant low blow...the brainbuster followed and Espinosa edged out a cheap win in 12:30.  After the match, Espinosa ordered Orleans(as his new manager) to raise his arm and hold the ropes for him to exit the ring...

Paco Gonzalez vs. Mark Haskins vs. "The Lone Star" Curt Stallion:  Paco defeated Danny Adams in the dog collar match at the previous show while Stallion scored the victory over Fred Yehi, allowing them to advance to this bout with a future Crown Of Glory Title shot on the line.  United Kingdom standout Hawkins was added to the show after the match had already been set, so he was added to the bout.  I was honestly not that familiar with Haskins prior to this, but he made a strong first impression on the Midwest here.  Paco managed to keep Hawkins out of it long enough to finish Stallion with the fireman's-carry Michinoku Driver in 10:59, earning himself a future title shot!

MsChif made her traditional appearance to do the ring introductions for the title match...

"Hot Fire" Myron Reed vs. Jake Something for the Crown Of Glory Title:  Reed brought inaugural champion Jason Kincaid's reign to a surprisingly quick end, then defended it against Rey Fenix, A.R. Fox, and Alex Daniels at Glory Pro shows.  Something earned this shot by winning a triple threat match with Kevin Lee Davidson and Jeff Cobb...he had quietly been impressing onlookers at Glory Pro shows this year.  These two crossed paths at Proving Ground Pro in July with Reed edging out a win, but this was a higher-profile bout with a larger audience on hand.  Both guys brought the heavy artillery as expected...Reed even managed to survive Something's usual finisher, the sliding lariat to the back of the head.  Reed nearly pulled out the victory, but Something delivered a sitout Tombstone to finally capture the title in 16:48!

Something had little time to celebrate as Jason Saint brought out his monster Barackus...the duo had set their sights on the title months ago.  However, the appearance was a feint as the Boys From Jollyville attacked Something and Reed out of nowhere!  The beatdown ensued...Paco ran out to help even the odds, but a masked man ran into the fray to join the side of Saint's crew.  As the newly-formed stable stood tall, Saint dramatically pulled off the man's mask...revealing him to be Curt Stallion!  Stallion had come so close to earning a title shot and came up short against Paco, so he sold his soul to the devil to get ahead...

That was quite an eventful show...and I'm still behind on my commentaries, go figure.  I had a therapist appointment on Friday night so I had to skip the WWE house show in town, but I did attend the Proving Ground Pro show on Saturday in Taylor Springs, Illinois.  Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling had its monthly event in East Carondelet, IL this past Saturday and featured "Ironman" Ken Kasa dethroning "The Icon" Chris Hargas to become a two-time Classic Wrestling Champion.

NXT + LU

WWE NXT

-Commentators:  Mauro Ranallo, Nigel McGuinness, & "Showtime" Percy Watson.
-Ember Moon won a triple threat match with Ruby Riot and Sonya Deville; Sonya got Ruby in an anklelock, but Ember hit the Eclipse(flying Stone Cold Stunner off the top rope) on Sonya and covered Ruby for the three-count (7:53 aired).
-Earlier this week:  Adam Cole & reDRagon(Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish) approached Roderick Strong as he was leaving the Performance Center...is this an alliance in the making?
-Backstage:  General Manager S. William Regal was interviewed about the NXT Women's Title situation.  Kairi Sane, Peyton Royce, and Ember Moon have qualified, so next week's qualifier will be...enter Billie Kay & Peyton Royce, hoping Billie would be in the match.  Regal confirmed that she was correct...but it would be a battle royal to give everyone a chance.  Billie & Peyton were less than pleased with this development.
-Aleister Black d. Raul Mendoza with the Black Mass(spinning kick) (2:12); "The Velveteen Dream" Patrick Clark attempted to distract Black by trying on his vest, but it didn't work...he still left with Black's vest.
-NXT Champion Drew McIntyre did a sitdown interview about his recent accomplishments.  Zelina Vega interrupted, saying that Drew and Andrade "Cien" Almas have a lot in common...and Almas might just be the next one to challenge for that title.  Has he been avoiding Almas?  While Zelina insinuated that Drew had the pull to get the title match made, Drew said that he would defend against anyone and kindly informed Zelina that perhaps Almas should take this up with him personally instead of sending his business partner.
-Kassius Ohno d. Cezar Bononi after a rolling elbow to the back of the head (3:06).
-Sanity(NXT Tag Team Champions Eric Young & Alexander Wolfe & Killian Dain) d. Adam Cole & reDRagon(Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish) by DQ when The Authors Of Pain(Akam Dhinsa & Rezar Selmani)(w/ Paul Ellering) attacked the members of Sanity (9:33 aired).

-In two weeks:  Johnny Gargano vs. Fabian Aichner.

Lucha Underground Season 3 Episode 40 (Ultima Lucha Tres Part 4)

-Commentators:  Matt Striker & Vampiro.
-Matanza Cueto(w/ promoter Dario Cueto) d. Dragon Azteca Jr. in a cage match after Black Lotus attacked Azteca with a cross-bodyblock off the cage, leading to Matanza winning with the Wrath Of The Gods(rewind powerslam) (8:33).  (Azteca initially won via "escape" when Matanza overhead belly-to-belly suplexed him through the cage, but Dario restarted the match to end by pinfall/submission only.)  Lotus attacked Matanza as well and cornered Dario, forcing him to admit that he had lied about who killed her parents(it was Matanza, not the original Dragon Azteca)...Matanza recovered and laid her out with the Wrath Of The Gods.
-Mil Muertes(w/ Catrina Perez) won a three-way dance with "They Call Him A Machine" Brian Cage and Jeremiah Crane.  Cage pinned Crane after the Weapon X(Gory Special Flatliner) (11:34), then Muertes pinned Cage after a Flatliner onto a chair (14:09 aired).  Dario presented the gauntlet to Mil and Catrina, but King Cuerno made a surprise return to attack Mil...the hunter left with the gauntlet as his trophy.
-Prince Puma d. Johnny Mundo in a title-vs.-career match to win the Lucha Underground Title.  "The Darewolf" P.J. Black, Jack Evans, Taya Valkyrie, & Ricky Mundo all got involved after a ref bump, but Angélico helped to even the odds...Puma went on to win with the 630 Splash (18:25 aired).
-BUT WAIT~!  Dario announced that Pentagon Dark had approached him last week about cashing in his Gift Of The Gods Title, so that match would happen TONIGHT...and BOTH men's careers were at stake!
-Pentagon Dark d. Prince Puma to win the Lucha Underground Title; Puma appeared to be on the verge of victory, but Vampiro left the commentary table to pull Pentagon out of the way of the 630 Splash.  Pentagon finished with the package piledriver to win the title (8:30).
-Pulp Fiction-style closing vignettes:  Puma left the Temple, discarding his mask as he departed...Cuerno put the gauntlet in a place of honor in his trophy room...a little girl left a spider in a box for Sexy Star, saying "she hasn't forgotten about you"...The Rabbit Tribe(Paul London, Saltador, & Mala Suerte) continued their worship of Mascarita Sagrada...Fenix and ring announcer Melissa Santos left the building, but Catrina was watching and so was Jeremiah Crane...Daga took his place as Kobra Moon's king; Drago was still imprisoned and Pindar was executed for being the weak link of the team in their loss...Vampiro met up with his master, who congratulated Vampiro for getting rid of Puma...Matanza returned to his cage and Rey Misterio Jr. was revealed as still being alive in the cell next to him...Dario promised his superiors that he would get the gauntlet back, but they SHOT HIM and told him that "new management" would take care of his mistakes...Dario tried to call for help on his phone, but passed out before he could...
-The end?

Glory Pro/Dynamo Pro Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Glory Pro/Dynamo Pro Wrestling exhibition at the Rizzuto Show Eat & Treat event at the Amphitheater in Chesterfield, Missouri.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

I began listening to 105.7 The Point's morning show on a regular basis several years ago...back then it was the Woody & Rizzuto Show, but it became the Rizzuto Show when Woody accepted a radio show on the west coast.  One of the hosts of the show, Tony Patrico, is a big wrestling fan and uses some remixed wrestling themes as bumper music...I've had the opportunity to chat with him at a few remote broadcasts and also at some of the local wrestling shows he has attended.  He's a big fan of Glory Pro and I've seen him at Ring Of Honor as well...I know that several of the deejays are wrestling fans, including Donny Fandango and Lux(who now does the morning show on 96.3 FM with local comedian Tim Convy).  I thought I spotted Lux at the dunk tank but didn't get a chance to say hi.

Glory Pro was advertised as being a part of this event, which featured many local food trucks, trick-or-treating for the kids, and musical acts as well as the wrestling.  I helped out at the wrestling tent for a little while, so yes, I was handing out candy to children for a short time.  Have you ever gotten the feeling that your deity of choice is laughing at you from on high?  As the event drew closer, it was pushed as a combination effort of Glory Pro and Dynamo Pro...I figured it would be the local crew working, so it made some sense.  The wrestling got a lot of positive attention from the onlookers, many of whom were unfamiliar with the local independent scene...so score in that regard.  I said hi to Donny Fandango at the Point booth as he was broadcasting live from the event...don't know how much of the show he saw, but I've always encouraged him to check out the local indie scene.  (Most of the local groups are family-friendly, so you can bring the kiddos...)  I got my picture taken with Fredbird...woo-hoo.

Your ring announcer was Ben Simon; your referee was Richard White.  Tony Patrico introduced the wrestling festivities; the ring was set up in front of the stage where the musical performances took place.

The Pride("The Incredible Primal Prodigy" Matt Kenway(Look At Him After Dark) & Aaron Dzinic) vs. No New Friends(Kevin Lee Davidson & "The Millenial" Danny Adams):  I think I'm overdue to retire the overblown nickname thing for Kenway...I'll do that eventually.  This was a more casual crowd than the usual Glory Pro audience, so Kenway wasn't unmercifully booed as he normally is.  K.L.D. and Adams showed some innovative teamwork at times, including a move where Adams monkeyflipped K.L.D. into his corner cannonball on Kenway.  Dzinic got a hot tag and rallied, but the opposition was too much for The Pride...K.L.D. lifted him into wheelbarrow position and Adams added a flying knee strike before Davidson faceplanted him, getting the three-count in 10:34.  No New Friends picked up some momentum heading into their United Glory Tag Team Title shot on Sunday...

Savanna Stone vs. Rahne Victoria:  I suspect these two will battle each other for a long time.  Rahne competed for Anarchy Wrestling in Cornelia, Georgia recently...it was also her first time as a de facto fan favorite against area rulebreaker Crystal Rose.  (Seeing a show in the old NWA Wildside venue is on my personal bucket list as a wrestling fan.)  Versatility is a good thing and I imagine we'll see Savanna as a rulebreaker at some point in her career...we may even see these two as a tag team down the line (as we saw Matt Sydal and Delirious eventually paired up).  This was a short contest and Savanna was motivated to gain momentum heading into Sunday's show as well...she got the victory with Sliced Bread #2 in 3:38.

"Pretty Reckless" Everett Connors vs. "The Stiff Robo Ginger" Gary Jay:  This was a battle of fan favorites and unfamiliar onlookers got an education on how hard Gary can hit...his chops left a red handprint on Connors' chest that was still visible at the following day's show!  It seems like it wasn't that long ago that Connors was just starting out as a fresh-faced rookie at the South Broadway Athletic Club...he's taken his lumps and progressed to where he's proven he belongs with the top competitors in the Midwest.  (He returns to CHIKARA in a few weeks!)  Of course Gary Jay has proven himself many times over and is finally starting to turn some heads on the national scene.  The match could have gone either way as both men had big matches in Alton:  Gary would continue his recent feud with "The Warhorse" Jake Parnell while Connors would team with his mentor Michael Elgin to defend the United Glory Tag Team Titles against No New Friends and The Boys From Jollyville(T-Money & Nasty Russ Myers).  After the two exchanged close near-falls, Connors edged out the win with a victory roll in 7:38...most tremendous.

"The Master Of Hairflips" Brandon Aarons vs. Brandon Espinosa vs. Roy Lewis for the DPW Heavyweight Title:  Lewis was an interesting X-Factor in this bout between former Babewatch tag team partners.  In this style of match, it's easy to steal a quick pin cover and one does not need to pin the champion to capture the belt...so it can be anybody's ballgame.  Espinosa has been a Tag Team Champion in Dynamo but has yet to hold singles gold, a goal he's attained in just about every other promotion where he's competed.  For a while it seemed like Espy's goal was to take Aarons out of the game and isolate Lewis to pin him, but Aarons managed to fight his way back into the match.  Espinosa hit the brainbuster on Lewis but Aarons broke up the cover with a double-stomp off the top rope.  Espy rolled out of the ring and Aarons capitalized on the situation, taking out Lewis with the close-range superkick and getting the pin in 6:44 to retain his title!

Ben Simon sought to wrap up the show, but K.L.D. and Adams made another appearance to talk up their United Glory Tag Title shot the following day...all righty then.

There was no intermission and no Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm)...aww.  I touched base with a bunch of people at the event...I had to joke with Sarah Rose(taking photos at ringside) over her wearing a Joey Ryan "King Of Dong Style" T-shirt to a kid-oriented event.  It's always cool to chat with Patrico, Moon Valjean(of Greek Fire/Story Of The Year fame), and Jeff Burton...I also got to officially meet Rizzuto, Mak(who does afternoons at The Point), and King Scott(Moon's cousin who has been a guest host at times).  I caught up to Moon as he was finishing up at the dunk tank...heh.  I wish I'd brought enough cash to partake in one of the food trucks, but I've been a bit under the weather in recent days so extra food may not have been a good idea.  Anywho, I headed home and just relaxed at home for the evening...think I needed the rest as Sunday would be a long day.

Of course, Sunday was another story for another time, so tune in next time:  Same Pat-Time, Same Pat-Channel.

That's my special comment for this, the fifty-first wrestling show I've attended in the year 2017.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.
