Comedy Part 783: Hey Guys, F*** Twitter

Location:  Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee:  Me
Lineup:  Brian McDowell, Jeremy Hellwig, Jake Beckman, Alex Karns, Spencer Tegtmeyer, Adam Hoppe, Vincent Opper, Tom Brown, Josh Bluehat, Richard Ozavala

I hadn't been on stage in almost a month due to illness; hosting meant that I didn't have much time to prepare and admittedly half-assed my set.  At least one new joke went over fairly well...suffice it to say that it was about the evils of social media and I will probably be adding to it in the next few days.  I'll just leave it at that.

TNA/GFW Impact

SICW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about last Saturday's Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling show at the Fire Department Engine House #2 in Swansea, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

It was a relatively light weekend as I made the short drive to SICW; I think the only other show for the evening was World Powerhouse Wrestling (Proving Ground Pro was a bit out of my traditional range).  The turnout was much better than the previous Swansea show, which was said to have been affected by a chili cookoff in Belleville.  I was in the company of colleagues Ben Simon and Luke Roberts for the evening...it had been an eventful week or two in independent wrestling.

Devin sang the National Anthem to start the show and promoter Herb Simmons addressed the fans, thanking the sponsors and hyping the night's card before being interrupted by Curtis Wylde and Wyldefyre.  The Wyldes were confronted by not one but TWO "Firepup"s, encouraging them to leave the ring.  Herb welcomed the night's special guest Cowboy Bob Orton before the matches officially got underway...

Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus; your referees were Shaft, Nick Ridenour, & Jay King.

"The Enforcer" Jimmy D vs. Bubba Troll:  D's luck hasn't been the best in recent times and his fortunes didn't appear to be changing here...Troll dominated the opener in short order, winning with a big splash off the second rope in a brisk 2:24.

Moondog Rover vs. Purple Passion:  Passion has about the same chance of winning as Jimmy D in the opener; he managed to last only slightly longer against his opponent.  The current Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance Heavyweight Champion continued his winning ways here, winning with his trademark front powerslam in 3:20.

Larry Matysik was in the house, making his way to ringside to watch the festivities...didn't get a chance to say hi on this night, unfortunately.

"The Wrestling Machine" Dave Vaughn vs. "Big Country" Clint Poe vs. Ax Allwardt:  I don't think they had too many triple threat matches at Wrestling At The Chase.  Vaughn and Poe crossed paths in the Classic Title tournament earlier in the year with Vaughn eliminating Poe in the first round; Vaughn's got a better attitude(and mental state of mind) nowadays.  Vaughn and Ax were briefly stablemates but each man had his own individual falling-out with manager Big Daddy.  Ax seemed to have the match won with the piledriver on Vaughn, but Poe threw Ax out of the ring and stole the pin on Vaughn in 5:37.  It seemed like a rulebreaker's move to win like that, which was odd...at the time.

Chief Attakullakulla vs. Beast, falls-count-anywhere match:  This was a unique stipulation match; once a man had scored a fall outside the ring, he had to step back through the ropes uninterrupted in order to be declared the winner.  Shockingly the match actually started in the ring, but it didn't stay there for long as it turned into another out-of-control brawl between these two.  Beast got the first fall in 5:36 after an elbowdrop on the floor, but Chief prevented him from getting back in the ring.  Chief managed to rally with the aid of a steel chair, beating down the big man with the weapon to score a fall in 7:20.  Beast wouldn't stay down and kept his rival from achieving the win, so Chief had to go back on the attack and scored another fall after a big splash in 7:58.  Beast refused to surrender and the brawl went out through the audience...Chief put the chair to good use once again, jamming it into Beast's midsection before pinning him on the floor again in 11:35.  This time, Beast was unable to stop his opponent from stepping back through the ropes...Chief was declared the winner in 12:06.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Coca-Cola and Dr. Pepper.

"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson & "Your Canadian Hero" Sean Vincent vs. "Volatile" Curtis Wylde & "The Northern Saint" Tony Flood(w/ Wyldefyre):  Central Illinois competitor Flood is a regular for Stride Pro Wrestling; he made his SICW debut a few weeks ago at their Caseyville event, fighting Jackson to a double DQ.  Wylde has plenty of history with both Jackson and Vincent, of course.  Flood immediately took issue with Vincent over CANADIAN PRIDE~!  They had a good solid tag match, ending with Wylde pinning Vincent after the Wylde Ride(Flatliner) in 9:59.

Bobby D vs. The Big Texan, no-DQ match:  D defeated Texan at the previous Swansea show, so we got the rematch here...these two have fought each other a lot so the familiarity runs deep.  Chairs came into play relatively quickly and Jimmy D interfered on his brother's behalf, but even that wasn't quite enough.  Texan pulled off a somersault senton at one point...does he think he's a luchador nowadays?  Texan countered a top-rope Frankensteiner with a powerbomb onto some set-up chairs that looked nasty.  He finished off Bobby after hitting an double-underhook faceplant a la Angel's Wings, followed by a suplex onto two set-up chairs in 12:15.

Flash Flanagan & Heath Hatton vs. "The Icon" Chris Hargas & "Superstar" Steve Fender(w/ Travis Cook):  This high-profile tag match included three former SICW Classic Champions, as well as a man who could easily hold that title in the near future in Fender.  While Hargas and Fender are stablemates, Flanagan and Hatton had an old rivalry stemming from Flash cheating to beat Heath for the aforementioned Classic Title...that seemed to be water under the bridge as they worked fairly well together in this one.  It was a tremendous match as expected, but no one could put the opposing team away on this night as it ended in a 15:00 draw.  There will be another day for all four men, to be sure.

"Ironman" Ken Kasa vs. Cowboy Marc Houston(w/ Big Daddy) for the Classic Title:  Kasa captured the title from Chris Hargas in October, then retained against Bubba Troll in Caseyville.  Hargas got his rematch in a best-of-three-falls bout two weeks before this event and the two went the distance in a 60:00 time-limit draw (each man had scored one fall so Kasa retained).  There was no rest for the weary as Kasa faced a big and tough challenger on this night; he also had to deal with the presence of the veteran manager Big Daddy on the floor.  Despite those factors, Kasa was able to persevere and lock on the Crippler Crossface...but Clint Poe hit the ring to break up the hold, causing the disqualification in 8:27!  Poe had been a fan favorite prior to this night, but he teams with Houston in other parts of the country...I can only assume that Big Daddy got in his ear and convinced him to join forces with Houston in this territory.  The two delivered their own version of the Hart Attack on the champion(with Houston delivering his signature lariat for his side of the move).  Most of the roster was preparing for the battle royal(that's my story and I'm sticking to it), so the task fell to Cowboy Bob Orton to restore order!  The Hall Of Famer entered the ring and assisted Kasa in fighting off Big Daddy's crew...they stood tall at the end of the fray, but Kasa now has to worry about the two-pronged attack in the near future.

Battle Royal:  Most of the guys on the card were in this free-for-all...it was all I could do to keep up with the eliminations, let alone who did the tossing and at what times.  It was a fairly lengthy battle royal as well, so it was several minutes before anyone was eliminated.  Curtis Wylde had a lot of enemies in the ring and was quickly dumped for the first elimination.  Gary Jackson and Big Texan grappled on the ropes and both tumbled out at the same time.  Next out were Heath Hatton, Ax Allwardt, and Jimmy D, followed by Chris Hargas, Flash Flanagan, and Moondog Rover.  Sean Vincent and Tony Flood renewed hostilities, eliminating each other.  The remaining  competitors ganged up on Bubba Troll to get him out.  The final four were Clint Poe, Dave Vaughn, Steve Fender, and Bobby D...Poe and Vaughn were sent to the floor and Fender arrogantly took his time with Bobby D, even going for visual pinfalls to assert his superiority.  As is often the case, this proved to be his undoing and Bobby D managed to surprise Fender for the final elimination in 15:25 to score the win!

HEY, I'm caught up...for about half a day.  Woo.  Tonight is Dynamo Pro at Concordia Turners Gymnasium in St. Louis, MO; also Cape Championship Wrestling has an event in Delta, MO.  Things will slow down for December, of course...that month looks like this:

-Saturday 12/2: World League Wrestling in Troy, MO; Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance in St. Louis, MO(South Broadway)
-Saturday 12/9: SICW in East Carondelet, IL
-Sunday 12/10: National Wrasslin' League in O'Fallon, MO

That's my special comment for this, the sixtieth(!) wrestling show I've attended in the year 2017.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

WOE Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about last Sunday's Wrestling Over Everything show at the River's Edge Community Center in Centreville, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

Your ring announcer was Chris Kaelin; your referee was Jason Pemberton.

The Landlord kicked off the show, announcing that a tournament for the vacant Tag Team Titles would begin at the first show of 2018.  He also apologized to Interstate Champon LaMarcus Clinton for "accidentally" booking him twice(a title defense against Billy McNeil and also a Heavyweight TItle shot against champion Tyler Copeland along with fellow challenger Da'Marius Jones.  Landlord thought he would simply cancel the Interstate Title match, but McNeil arrived to protest that decision...the war of words led to an impromptu start to the first match.

LaMarcus Clinton(w/ Landlord) vs. Billy McNeil for the Interstate Title:  Landlord vowed that he wouldn't get physically involved...but when L.M.C. got an anklelock in the early stages of the match, Landlord rang the bell in 0:46 and declared his man the winner.  (Twentieth anniversary of Montreal!)  Oddly enough, referee Pemberton wouldn't allow that and ejected Landlord from ringside, allowing the match to continue(and absolutely screwing up my attempt at timing the match).  They had a fine bout, but I'd like to see them square off in another environment where both could really cut loose.  L.M.C. brought the belt into the ring and the referee took it away, but it was merely a feint as Landlord ran back in through the front door and tried to hit McNeil with a cookie sheet.  Billy avoided the shot and L.M.C. was accidentally laid out by his manager...Billy followed up with a Pac-Man Attack-style frog splash to capture the title for the second time in 6:27 of the restart!

Trystan Brady Shadeux vs. P.T. Beckham:  The card was a bit shorthanded with Taylor Champion and "The Icon" Chris Hargas absent, so there were only six matches on the final lineup.  (Disappointed I missed the Champion vs. Hargas match at the previous WOE show; they were running on the same day as Glory Pro.)  Shadeux is inexperienced but he seems to be improving.  I thought this one was solid; Beckham missed his top-rope elbowdrop and Shadeux hit an Elijah Express-style double-knee to the back of Beckham in the corner, getting the pin in 6:11.

All Eyes On Us(Micah Pope & Nelson Sixx) vs. The Sabotage Squad(Krispy 2 Pop & John Boi):  The Squad had been scheduled to face a team called "Superkicks & White Chicks" who were also MIA, so they threw out the open challenge and got A.E.O.U.  Despite the Squad's recent alliance with Landlord, the fans actually seemed to prefer them over the obnoxious antics of Pope and Sixx.  The match was surprisingly short and, despite the fans seemingly siding with the Sabotage Squad, they still cheated to win as Krspy rolled up Sixx with a handful of tights in 4:53.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  One Coca-Cola.

Johnny Park vs. The Big Texan vs. Richard Faith(w/ Miss Chaos):  I hadn't seen Park(fka Garrett Shanks) much outside of the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance.  I didn't know anything about Faith's new valet, but she wasn't shy about getting involved in the matchup.  Texan continues to impress with his increased mobility, once again doing a plancha off the second rope to the floor and also adding a rolling necksnap to his arsenal.  Texan dominated a lot of the match, but Miss Chaos distracted him at a key moment and Faith pinned Park after the Blackhole Slam in 9:06.  Texan took out his frustrations on Park, dropping him with a chokeslam as Faith and Chaos headed for higher ground.

Intermission numero dos~!  That was quick...

"The Infamous" Tyler Copeland vs. "2.0" Da'Marius Jones vs. LaMarcus Clinton(w/ Landlord) for the Heavyweight Title:  Copeland was without his title belt as Leone Mephisto had stolen it at a previous show.  A highlight spot saw Copeland get Jones on his shoulders and L.M.C. hitting Jones with a Buff Blockbuster from that position.  The Sabotage Squad ran in to attack Copeland and Jones, but the injured Benjamin Ulysses Trust came in to help with his crutch.  Jones hit the Flatliner on Copeland, but didn't seem to appreciate Trust's presence as he took him out with a superkick before scoring a near-fall on the champion.  Copeland came back with a Go 2 Sleep and Rude Awakening on Jones...for two.  He got Jones in the bridging chancery but L.M.C. broke it up with the 450 Splash, getting a close near-fall on Copeland.  L.M.C. went for another Blockbuster on Copeland but got caught in the Go 2 Sleep, then Copeland made him tap out to the bridging chancery in 8:45.  Very enjoyable main event!

Post-match, Copeland threw out the challenge to Mephisto...Mephisto was not in the building, but Landlord said he'd make the no-holds-barred match for the next show(whenever it is).  All righty then...

Fun weekend...this past weekend had Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in Swansea, IL at the Firehouse.  Will get to that commentary in the next few days, hopefully...the holiday weekend should help me get caught up on some things.

The rest of the year looks like this:
-Saturday 11/25: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in St. Louis, MO(Concordia Turners Gymnasium); Cape Championship Wrestling in Delta, MO
-Saturday 12/2: World League Wrestling in Troy, MO; Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance in St. Louis, MO(South Broadway)
-Saturday 12/9: SICW in East Carondelet, IL
-Sunday 12/10: NWL in O'Fallon, MO

That's my special comment for this, the fifty-ninth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2017.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

SICW Wrestling Explosion

-Commentators:  Drew Abbenhaus & "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz.
-"Ironman" Ken Kasa fought "The Icon" Chris Hargas(w/ Travis Cook) to a time-limit draw in a best-of-three-falls match to retain the Classic Title; Travis was handcuffed to promoter Herb Simmons at ringside. Kasa nearly won the first fall after a John Wu Dropkick off the second rope, but Hargas' feet were under the ropes and the referee waved it off. Hargas took advantage of the chaos and rolled up Kasa with a handful of tights to win the first fall for real. Hargas delivered a Tombstone, but took too long to go for the cover and Kasa took him down into a Crippler Crossface for the tapout to even the score. Hargas focused his attack on the neck from there and the two traded sleepers...Hargas nearly won the third fall and the match with a sleeper as Kasa's arm dropped twice, but he just BARELY kept his arm up on the third check. Kasa countered an F-5 attempt by taking Hargas down into the Crossface again, but Hargas refused to surrender and the time limit expired!

PWCS Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Pro Wrestling Championship Series show at the Spaulding Hall Club in Alton, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

My weekend plans were nearly very different, as I had agreed to perform at Hey Guys Comedy on Saturday evening.  However, the illness bug that had bitten quite a few people(including some co-workers) finally got to me and I had to cancel on that engagement.  I did my best to minimize my contact with others(yes, moreso than usual) on this weekend of wrestling escapades...

Your ring announcer was Chris Kaelin; your referee was Adam Kennedy.

Starting scoreboard:  Ego Busters 8-1, Resurgence 4-5, Blacklist/Submission Squad 3-6.  The 'Busters ran away with the lead this season, but all you have to do is come in second to qualify for the championship match so the records became meaningless at that point.

"Rich Homie Juice" A.J. Gray vs. Brandon Espinosa:  Gray had an impressive performance at Proving Ground Pro earlier this year against Hakim Zane, showing great agility and versatility.  He faced a tough test in his first appearance in the immediate St. Louis area, taking on the well-traveled veteran Espinosa in this free agent showcase.  The competitive opener could have easily gone either way, but Gray scored the upset win after a lariat in 8:35.

"The Dad Bod" Sean Orleans(Submission Squad) & Aaron Dzinic(Blacklist)(w/ "The Incredible Primal Prodigy" Matt Kenway (Look At Him After Dark)) vs. "Sensational" Stevie Fierce(Ego Busters) & Geoffrey Percival Austes(Resurgence)(w/ Greg Jovi):  Competing stables had to be on the same page in this one, as the win/loss records would be impacted regardless of who won or lost the fall.  Kenway was on crutches due to his recent injury.  Midwest fans are familiar with Orleans and Dzinic, of course(even if they're not entirely clear on Dzinic's first name)...Fierce has been down this way a few times, but it was the Midwest debut for Chicago's "G.P.A."  While he was associated with the Resurgence stable, his side was clearly of the rulebreaking variety in this matchup.  The teams worked fairly well together, but the outside parties made the difference as Jovi antagonized Kenway on the floor.  That brought Dzinic out to intervene and G.P.A. rolled up a distracted Orleans with feet on the ropes(HEEL~!) in 13:55.  (Ego Busters 9-1, Resurgence 5-5, Blacklist/Submission Squad 3-7)

"The Wind Of Destruction" Makaze(w/ Alexandre Rudolph)(Blacklist) vs "Lights Out" Adrian Surge(w/ Greg Jovi)(Ego Busters):  These two have battled several times in recent years...it's odd to note that their roles are completely the opposite in Dynamo Pro nowadays.  The bout was relatively short as Surge got under his rival's skin by tearing at his mask.  Makaze had a chance to win with his patented Kyouhen Sharpshooter, but instead elected to dish out immediate payback in the form of a blatant stomp to the groin.  That earned him a disqualification in 6:00, putting his Blacklist team even further behind the eight ball on a crucial night.  (Ego Busters 10-1, Blacklist 3-8)

"The Miracle Worker" Davey Vega(w/ Greg Jovi)(Ego Busters) vs. Everett Connors(w/ Evan Gelistico)(Submission Squad) for the Gateway Heritage Title:  Connors was on a roll in PWCS, scoring wins over Paco Gonzalez and Danny Adams heading into this title bout.  Since the title transitioned from the St. Louis Anarchy Championship to its current state, Vega has retained it against Mat Fitchett, Paco, Alexandre Rudolph, and Gary Jay...mostly through dubious means and his deal with the long-haired devil known as Greg Jovi.  It was good to see Gelistico and Connors on the same page, given the recent falling-out of their dopplegangers Buddy Shepherd and Skyler Beckett (Gelistico was also in the corner of Paco Gonzalez, who bears a striking resemblance to "Takedown" Javy Torres, later in the show).  Some fans seemed intent on dubbing Connors the "master of the chokeslam", a sentiment that Gelistico approved despite the fact that I personally have never seen Connors execute that maneuver.  To my surprise, Connors actually did deliver a chokeslam at one point and got a near-fall out of it.  Vega survived that devastating maneuver and leveled Connors with the buzzsaw kick, but Connors rolled out of the ring to escape defeat.  Connors had the fans on his side and scored with the Bieber Driver(hanging piledriver), but Vega barely got a foot on the bottom rope.  Vega had to delve into his submission arsenal, catching Connors in a triangle choke out of nowhere for the tapout in an extremely competitive 18:28!  (Ego Busters 11-1, Submission Squad 3-8)

Vega didn't have much time to celebrate as Mat Fitchett made an appearance with the PWCS Championship trophy in tow.  He agreed to return it to Jovi, but only under the condition that he finally get his rematch with Vega at the season finale on January 6th!

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  A bottle of water, plus a couple of slices of buffalo chicken pizza offered to me by my compatriot Zach.  You can tell I'm under the weather when my appetite suffers...

"The Warhorse" Jake Parnell(Resurgence) vs. Matt Knicks(Blacklist):  I hadn't seen much of Chicago competitor Knicks in a while; he worked in a tag team with Chris Castro in St. Louis Anarchy in the past.  Knicks got a lot of hatred from the fans; I blame the man-bun.  I think everyone was expecting Parnell to win this one, so it was a bit of a surprise when Knicks pulled off the upset via buzzsaw kick in 9:11.  (Blacklist 4-8, Resurgence 5-6)

Paco Gonzalez(Resurgence) vs. Evan Gelistico(w/ Matt Kenway & Shawshank)(Submission Squad):  This was a battle of fan favorites, thought Gelistico is a rulebreaker in most places...one might even call it a battle of the buddies.  (Har har.)  While Evan admittedly doesn't have the best physique in the world, he's got a great mind for the business and is an excellent talker as well.  The finish was unique as Gelistico leapfrogged out of the corner, somehow landing on Paco's upper chest and lifting him up into the setup for a Tombstone from there...that scored Gelistico the important victory in 12:49!  (Submission Squad 4-8, Resurgence 5-7)  As the dust settled from the battle, Danny Adams hit the ring to attack Paco(the feud spans all promotions!)...Gary Jay made the save, kick-starting our main event matchup...

"The Millenial" Danny Adams(w/ Greg Jovi)(Ego Busters) vs. "The Stiff Robo Ginger" Gary Jay(Submission Squad) vs. "The Dirty Rook" Mat Fitchett(Resurgence) vs. "The Chainsaw Viking" Alexandre Rudolph(Blacklist)(w/ chainsaw):  The Blacklist's representative had been scheduled to be Dingo, but he had to cancel...too bad, would have liked to see him in this mix.  Rudolph presented a unique element to the bout with his size and power, compared to the other smaller participants.  In fact, Rudolph stacked up all three opponents on the ring apron with huge chokeslams!  #hardestpartofthering  A chair came into play(no disqualifications in a four-corner bout!) and Adams wasn't above using a low blow or two to gain an advantage...but Gary put him away with a double-stomp to the back of the head in 10:15!  (Submission Squad 5-8, Ego Busters 11-2, Resurgence 5-8, Blacklist 4-9)

The final standings for the season had the Ego Busters in first place by a wide margin, but a rare tie for second between the Submission Squad and Resurgence...as a result, an impromptu "tiebreaker" match was decided upon to determine who advanced to the season championship match.  Each squad chose a representative, both of whom just happened to be in the preceding bout.

"The Stiff Robo Ginger" Gary Jay(Submission Squad) vs. "The Dirty Rook" Mat Fitchett(Resurgence):  The stables all remained at ringside to support their teammates.  Since both men had just competed, this was a quick sprint as both men threw bombs right out of the gate.  Gary rode his wave of momentum to victory, picking up the win with the sliding forearm smash in 5:40 to make it Ego Busters vs. Submission Squad in the finals!  (Submission Squad 6-8, Resurgence 5-9)  Cue mutual respect speeches regarding everyone in the ring area and that, my friends, was a wrap.  ACTUAL final season scoreboard:  Ego Busters 11-2, Submission Squad 6-8, Resurgence 5-9, Blacklist 4-9.

The ensuing week wasn't much better in terms of my physical well-being, as I've been zonked out at home for most of my non-work hours.  At least I should actually get caught up on these commentaries before my next indie show...but I'm not QUITE caught up.  That's another story for another time, so tune in next time:  Same Pat-Time, Same Pat-Channel.

That's my special comment for this, the fifty-eighth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2017.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.
