Now, as promised, a special comment about last Sunday's Dynamo Pro Wrestling show at 4 Hands Brewery in St. Louis, Missouri.
DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.
We were worried about the temperature for an outdoor show, but it improved just enough that people weren't freezing their butts off in their wrestling attire. Several people were in Halloween costumes, including one individual who was dressed as "Pyramid Head" from the Silent Hill video games...going shirtless in that weather was a tough proposition.
Your ring announcer was Chris Roedel; your referee was Scott Ramsey.
Jackal vs. Tony Esteem: On Saturday I had seen the newcomer's name on a format sheet as "Asteem", but I was corrected after the fact. The veteran Jackal was a good opponent for him to work with, though there were a few minor hiccups in the bout. Such is life when you're new; work through it, learn, and move on. Jackal won with a slightly modified Killswitch #2(walk-up Tomakazi) that ended more like a bulldog, scoring the pin in 6:34.
Straps Down University("The Valedictorian" Keon Option & "The Neon Icon" Justin D'Air) vs. The Agents Of Chaos(Viktor Von Stein & Xavier Shadowz) for the Tag Team Titles: I would have trouble telling you the last time Option & D'Air defended the belts. The Agents targeted D'Air at a show in August, leading to Option making his return from hiatus to save his partner. The teams split a pair of singles matches at the previous night's show at Concordia Turners Gymnasium, leading to this championship bout. One could argue that ring rust as a tag team affected the champions, as Von Stein and Shadowz have been teaming consistently in recent months. The match broke down as all four men battled in the ring...and Shadowz speared D'Air for the win out of nowhere in 10:15, crowning NEWWWWW Tag Team Champions! The match may have been over but the fight continued...Option & D'Air got the better of that exchange and D'Air landed a 450 Splash on Shadowz to send the new titleholders into retreat. I suspect these tandems will meet again...
"The Master Of Hairflips" Brandon Aarons vs. "The Heartthrob" Jaden Roller: Roller played a key role in Aarons' loss of the Heavyweight Title at Concordia Turners, so Aarons was out for some payback. Aarons took a big chance early and paid for it as a dive off the top rope hit only guardrail. Roller was able to maintain an advantage for several minutes after that, but Aarons needed a win to rebound from the previous night...he put away Roller with the top-rope double-stomp in 9:35. Thankfully Aarons' face and hair were not seriously damaged by the previous night's fireball.
Savanna Stone vs. Rahne Victoria: Rahne scored the win in their Saturday bout, so Savanna was hoping to even the weekend score with her rival. Savanna had a big week ahead of her, as she would be facing Mia Yim at Zero-One USA and Marti Belle at the National Wrasslin' League event in O'Fallon, Missouri. Savanna had a rough landing off a rana and people were worried about a potential rib injury, but she seemed to be feeling better late in the day. Savanna got the pin with a floatover rollup out of the corner in 6:56.
Intermission~! Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm): Gooey butter cake doughnut before the start of the event, Coca-Cola, French fries from one of the food trucks, and another Coke later in the day...plus some leftover chicken from the Strange Donuts booth's chicken-and-waffles doughnuts. I should have eaten before the show or something stupid like that.
Roy Lewis vs. The Snitch: Lewis got a chance to main-event at the Eat & Treat event when he was in a Heavyweight Title triple threat match with then-champion Brandon Aarons and Brandon Espinosa...even if it didn't end up too well for him. Snitch's luck has been mixed in recent times, though his first-time teaming with Tony Esteem resulted in a win the previous evening. They had a solid matchup with Lewis getting the flash pin off a rollup in 7:43.
"The Wind Of Destruction" Makaze vs. Ricky Rodriguez for the Heavyweight Title: Methinks Makaze hand-picked his first title challenger...he wore a Chicago Blackhawks jersey to the ring to make it crystal clear that he was the bad guy. The recent referee was making his in-ring debut against the veteran champion...he didn't get totally dominated, but I imagine the masked man was testing him a bit to see what he had. Makaze put him away with the Northern Lights Perfectplex in 7:55.
Battle Royal: This would determine a future challenger to Makaze's title and featured most of the competitors who had already been on the show, plus a few others who had worked the Saturday night event. Snitch had Chris Roedel read an ultra-extended rant against the crowd and the event, causing the entire field to beat him down once the bell rang...he was thrown through the ropes and hid behind the timekeeper's table, hoping to wait out the fight. The former tag champs Option and D'Air joined forces right away and had a hand in several early eliminations; D'Air threw out Jackal and Option eliminated Rodriguez to start. Jaden Roller eliminated Tony Esteem, then both members of Straps Down University sent Roy Lewis to the asphalt. Thomas Munos(who attempted to enter the costume contest as Bruiser Brody) threw out Option, but was double-teamed by Brandon Espinosa and Graham Bell and sent over the ropes. Espy followed up by eliminating D'Air and Bell, but Roller threw out Espy. Roller threw Aarons through the ropes...Snitch, thinking Roller was the last man standing, came out of hiding and threw Roller out of the match. The masked man thought he'd won, but Aarons re-entered the ring and dumped him out for the win in 13:20! Looks like Aarons has a rematch for the title in his future...
"The Neon Icon" Justin D'Air vs. Brandon Espinosa: A lot of people thought the show was over, but I guess this was Dynamo's version of an encore match(a la CHIKARA). Both guys are tremendous talents and I would call D'Air one of the more underrated guys in the area nowadays. They had a fine outing to close out the wrestling portion of the festivities, ending with Espinosa's brainbuster in 8:37. A good time was had by all (okay, maybe not so much D'Air).
So we have a new Heavyweight Champion and new Tag Team Champions in Dynamo Pro...now we just need to find where Michael Elgin left the D-1 Title and we'll be all set. It's good to see the wheels in motion for a more active promotion in the near future...stuff happens, but now they have a steady home venue and several newcomers helping out the roster.
This past weekend I went to Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in East Carondelet, IL(Saturday) and the National Wrasslin' League in O'Fallon, MO(Sunday)...more on that in upcoming commentaries, of course.
