WWE NXT

-Commentators:  Tom Phillips, Nigel McGuinness, & "Showtime" Percy Watson.
-Tommaso Ciampa entered the ring on crutches to speak his mind...he called Johnny Gargano to the ring, but then acknowledged that Gargano was not there.  He went into Takeover with an injury and never doubted that he would compete in the ladder match, but he felt like the fans were already replacing him in their minds with "dream partner" substitutions.  He realized that he would be on the shelf for a while after Takeover as he had aggravated the injury...and he grew concerned that Gargano would just "replace" him as well.  He blamed the fans for ruining Do It Yourself and said that if he was going away for a while, then Gargano would go away as well.  D.I.Y. didn't have their "moment" at Takeover, but he(Ciampa) did.
-United Kingdom Champion "The Bruiserweight" Pete Dunne d. Danny Burch(non-title) with the Bitter End(pumphandle Flatliner (7:04 aired).  Afterwards, Dunne proclaimed that he relieved a "boy"(Tyler Bate) of the title that rightfully belonged to him.
-Backstage:  "The Velveteen Dream" Patrick Clark was interviewed about his debut...but he proclaimed the ambiance to be "not right" and said they'd do the interview when things were perfect for him.
-Cezar Bononi d. Andrade "Cien" Almas via small package (3:07).
-At the Performance Center:  Billie Kay & Peyton Royce crossed paths with Ember Moon.  The Iconic Duo took offense to her presence and were quick to mock her, but their attitudes changed when it turned out that Ember was getting cleared to return to action.
-After Takeover:  Hideo Itami brushed off an interviewer out of frustration over his loss, then trashed the locker room area as other wrestlers(including Kassius Ohno) attempted to calm him down.
-Earlier today:  Itami and Ohno seemed to made amends after their previous heated exchange...
-Roderick Strong & Kassius Ohno d. Eric Young & Alexander Wolfe(w/ Killian Dain); "No Way" Jose Valenzuela stopped Dain from interfering and Strong pinned Young after the End Of Heartache(Falcon Arrow backbreaker) (9:33 aired).
-Next week:  Hideo Itami vs. Oney Lorcan.
-In two weeks:  Asuka Urai vs. Ruby Riot vs. Nikki Cross in a three-way dance for the NXT Women's Title.

Comedy Part 747: Flying Back Into Action

Location:  Westport Funny Bone
Emcee:  Jon Maddy
After:  Brandon Barr
Before:  Andy Hamilton

It was a rare night when just about everybody made the list...I drove from work straight to Westport Plaza for the evening's festivities.  I started with a quick couple of lines, calling back to both Andrew Frank and Tina Dybal's sets...bwahahaha.  I felt like the set flowed really well and I even worked in some newer jokes that got good laughs.  I ran up against the clock on a show with a lot of comedians, but I don't think I went too far over.  It'll be nice to get back to the comedy shows and get some stage time...woo.

-Thursday:  Hey Guys Comedy open-mic in Fairview Heights, IL (7:30 PM)
-Saturday:  Dark Roast Comedy show at the Artisan Bakery in Edwardsville, IL (8 PM)
-Thursday 7/6:  Happy Tree & Friends Comedy at The Way Out Club in St. Louis, MO (9 PM)

NWL Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Sunday's National Wrasslin' League show at the Casa Loma Ballroom in St. Louis, Missouri.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

After the previous show was cancelled due to weather/flooding conditions, the scheduled six-man tag team main event was postponed to this event.  NWL has not drawn as well in St. Louis as in Kansas City, possibly because of the oversaturation of this market compared to only one or two promotions in the K.C. area.  On that note, they were hoping to rebound.  One notable absence from the show was NWL President Major Baisden, presumably preparing an extra-special PowerPoint for the next show on June 4th.

Your ring announcer was Ben Simon; your referees were Michael Crase & Sean Orleans.

The show started with the debut appearance of a new tag team called "Five Direction" comprised of Chippy & C-Note.  (Some might note a passing resemblance to Beauty & The Beast:  Stevie Fierce & Rob Matter.)  Their literal song-and-dance routine was interrupted by NWL KC's Thor Theriot, who seemed to be warmly received before he noted his regional allegiance...whoops.  Theriot was looking for a fight, but Chippy & C-Note were decidedly uninterested.  They took their leave and randomly passed by Party Crasher Spike on the way out...Spike had run out of beer money and was looking for a fight himself, so he figured he might as well face Theriot.

Party Crasher Spike vs. Thor Theriot:  In retrospect, the St. Louis roster was fortunate that this was NOT, in fact, declared to be an I-70 Series match...they were already taking a drubbing in that department.  While the Party Crashers have found success in alternate universes, they haven't had the same luck in the NWL...Thor got the win with the Ragnarok(fireman's-carry double-knee gutbuster) in 5:01.

Next up was Marti Belle's "Marti Party" talk show segment; she seems to have borrowed Dominick Butler's old theme music.  However, she was quickly interrupted by "The Billion-Dollar Brother" Emmett DuBois(w/ Clayton Fox).  Marti has been very vocal with her criticism of DuBois' methods during interview segments and DuBois took exception to her attitude, literally backing her into a corner.  Marti was not intimidated and even removed her earrings and high-heeled shoes in preparation for a potential fight...but help arrived in the form of Neon Iverson.  Iverson challenged DuBois to a match and so it came to pass...

Neon Iverson vs. "The Billion-Dollar Brother" Emmett DuBois(w/ Clayton Fox):  DuBois tried to seek refuge outside the ring, but Iverson stunned him with a dropkick to the back from an adjacent turnbuckle as DuBois was sitting on the ring apron!  Iverson continued his aerial assault, but Fox took the bullet for his boss when Neon delivered a suicide dive that nearly caused him to wipe out on the floor.  Iverson managed to rebound from that setback and went to the top rope, but Fox distracted him by throwing money...when the referee turned his attention to the accountant, DuBois clocked Iverson with the ring bell and got the screwy win in 7:05.  DuBois and Fox continued the abuse after the match, but Iverson's tag team partner Dez Wellston returned from injury to make the save.  (The reunited Soldiers have challenged DuBois & Fox to a tag match at the June 4th show, adding to a stacked lineup.)

Party Crasher Boulder vs. Xavier Church(aka Connor Braxton):  Church established himself as an unfavorite with the St. Louis fans with his pre-match promo.  He's got good size and has been competing all over the Midwest(including the All-American Wrestling show I attended in December); I think he could be a great addition to the NWL roster.  As noted earlier, the Party Crashers should probably stick to tag team competition.  Church got the win in 5:42 with a suplex dropped into a Diamond Cutter (don't think I'd seen that before).

The Buddy System(Skyler Beckett & "Takedown" Javy Torres) vs. The Underground(Adam Ryan & Jackie Lee Bosch):  Buddy Shepherd had invented a new app to meet up with his Buddies, but his first meeting led to a sneak attack by Ryan and Bosch; Buddy hadn't been seen since that time.  Ryan & Bosch were carrying Shepherd's trademark white blazer and claimed that we would never see him again, but Beckett and Torres kept the faith as they fought on his behalf.  The Underground members kept up the trash talk, but Buddy finally ran through the audience and jumped the guardrail to encourage his Buddies!  Bosch chased him away, but that left Adam Ryan alone in the ring...Javy stunned Ryan with an enzuigiri and Beckett got the pin with an O'Connor Roll in 10:13!  The Buddy System stood reunited...but I suspect the issue is far from over.

Jack Foster vs. "High On Life" Ken Dharma, I-70 Series:  St. Louis has been behind the proverbial eight-ball in this series, but they somehow manage to stay within reasonable striking distance.  Dharma acknowledged that St. Louis was actually his hometown, but added that he was glad he left...despite that, his father and girlfriend were in attendance to support him.  Of course, he had an uphill battle against Foster...he managed to focus his attack on the arm after one of Foster's chops met the ringpost.  Foster fought back into the match, scoring the victory in 7:53 after IT'S THE BIG FOOT in the corner; that improved St. Louis' record in the I-70 Series to seven wins (against Kansas City's eleven).

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Two Coca-Colas.  Oddly, I was charged two dollars for the first one and three dollars for the second one...guess it was different bartenders.

"The Hanover Hooligan" Jay Lutz made his entrance and threw out a challenge to "Greatness" Marcellus Gaines...Gaines was not in the house, but his manager Drew Gold came out instead.  In fact, Gold claimed that he told his protege to stay at home so he wouldn't be goaded into a fight.  Gold said that Gaines WOULD face Lutz at the next show on June 4th...but only if he can beat the man that Gold hand-picked for the match...

Kansas City Champion "The Mile-High Magnum" Dak(ota) Draper vs. Jay Lutz, non-title I-70 Series match:  Draper's attitude seems to change like the wind with regards to the STL/KC rivalry.  Obviously the fans were on Lutz's side for this one.  Draper got a laugh out of me when he teased a suicide dive, only to step through the ropes and execute a HEADLOCK TAKEOVER on the floor.  Lutz gave the K.C. Champ a great fight, scoring a near-fall after his sliding forearm smash, but Draper put him away with the Mile-High Doctor Bomb in 9:11.  Lutz's sober showdown with Marcellus Gaines will have to wait a little longer.

"The Raging Bull" Maverick & The Blood Brothers(Davey Gibson & Mathew Grundy) vs. St. Louis Champion "The Five-Star Phenom" Todd Letterman, "The Bull City Boss" Cornell Douglass, & Brother Castle:  The battles between the men on either side have been raging for the past several months; the match also featured the final four in the St. Louis Title tournament(Letterman, Maverick, Douglass, and Grundy).  The match was a good preview of coming attractions...I'd be interested in seeing Letterman vs. Gibson down the line.  The referee was barely able to maintain control and things only got more chaotic when an errant Maverick kick took out the official by mistake.  Maverick hit the Death Valley Driver on Douglass but there was no one to count; there was also no one to count when Douglass recovered and took out Maverick with the heart punch.  Douglass brought in a chair, but Letterman stopped him and said he didn't need to cheat to win...that partnership seemed doomed from the start.  (*whispers* DOUGLASS DOESN'T LIKE WHITE PEOPLE.)  Letterman relieved him of the chair and the verbage escalated until Letterman took a swing at his partner with the chair...Douglass avoided the swing and the champion took out Maverick instead.  Douglass and Castle were quick to pounce on their "ally" as Castle held Letterman for Douglass' heart punch...the ref had finally recovered and Douglass covered Maverick for the three-count in 20:54.  Curtain down, that's our show for the night.

A lot was set up for the next St. Louis show:  Letterman vs. Maverick vs. Douglass in a triple threat match for the St. Louis Championship, Davey Gibson gets a rematch with Kyle O'Reilly, Mathew Fitchett challenges Marcellus Gaines, and The Soldiers face Emmett DuBois & Clayton Fox.  They'll have a lot of competition on June 4th with Ring Of Honor in Collinsville, plus Metallica's concert at Busch Stadium numero dos.

This coming weekend is oddly devoid of immediate-area shows.  There isn't anything on Saturday or Sunday, but Glory Pro returns to Alton, Illinois on Friday with the tournament to crown the first United Glory Tag Team Champions.

June looks like this:
-Friday 6/2: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in Grafton, IL
-Sunday 6/4: Ring Of Honor in Collinsville, IL; NWL in St. Louis, MO
-Saturday 6/10: Pro Wrestling Championship Series in Alton, IL; Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance in St. Louis, MO

-Saturday 6/17: World League Wrestling in Troy, MO; SICW in East Carondelet, IL
-Sunday 6/18: NWL in St. Louis, MO

That's my special comment for this, the twenty-third wrestling show I've attended in the year 2017.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

With my evenings freed up, I made my way back to Hey Guys for the Thursday open-mic night.  We had a decent audience and quite a few comedians(as you see above); I'm pretty sure Bruce Veach just assigns me to host so he can see the whole lineup on this dumb blog.  *waves hi*  I was trying out a lot of new material, to the point that I brought my notebook on stage...it was probably a move best left unmade.  At any rate, I hope to get back to other open-mics in the near future, particularly the Westport Funny Bone.  I have plenty of material about my days of pizza delivery, as well as other bits of randomness...

SICW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling show at the Community Center in East Carondelet, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

The May show is considered one of the bigger annual events for SICW as it's the anniversary of Wrestling At The Chase.  Special guests included Abdullah The Butcher, Barbara Goodish(wife of the late Bruiser Brody), and Charlie Thesz(wife of the late Lou Thesz).  The house was packed and myself and Ben Simon just barely found seats.  The concession stand had some new items, including pizza rolls.  REPEAT, WE HAVE PIZZA ROLLS.

Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus; your referees were Jay King, Nick Ridenour, & Shaft.

Drew started off the show with promoter Herb Simmons bringing out Barbara Goodish and Larry Matysik(for television commentary).  Travis Cook, as is his wont, interrupted to claim credit for the attendance since they were all there to see Chris Hargas win the title.  After the verbage escalated, Barbara sent him packing with a slap to the face.

Drew segued into a ten-bell salute for recent wrestlers who have passed away:  "Pretty Boy" Doug Somers(who was a bit before my time) and Rosey(of Three-Minute Warning and Super Hero In Training fame in WWE).

Bodily Harm("The Enforcer" Jimmy D & Bobby D) vs. The Professionals(Shawn Santel & Mauler McDarby):  Cool to see Santel & McDarby at SICW; I feel like their style is a good fit for this company and audience.  It's unfortunate that there aren't many active tag team championships in the area right now; Dynamo Pro Wrestling Tag Champ Keon Option seems to be on hiatus and World League Wrestling's tag belts are in limbo.  The Ds held the Tag Titles in Wrestling Invades America, but that reign didn't last long and those tag belts are currently vacant as well.  The former Dynamo Pro Tag Champs focused their attack on Jimmy D's arm and isolated him for a short time, but Bobby D got into the fray and cleaned house.  Bobby eventually got the pinfall on Santel in 6:20 after he and Jimmy hit the Hart Attack.

"Big Country" Clint Poe vs. The Big Texan:  Last year's Bruiser Brody Memorial Battle Royal winner has been tangling with Poe in recent tag matches.  This was their first one-on-one meeting and it got out of hand in a hurry...the referee attempted to restore order, but both men shoved him away and it ended in a double DQ after about a minute.  (Will get the exact time if the match airs on the TV show. EDIT: Joined in progress; about 1:25)  The two big men continued brawling and the fight spilled out of the ring, moving all the way to the backstage area.

Flash Flanagan vs. "Volatile" Curtis Wylde(w/ Wyldefyre) vs. Cowboy Marc Houston, Classic Title Tournament Semifinal:  Houston defeated Bobby D and Ax Allwardt to reach the semifinals, then interfered in the Flanagan-Wylde quaterfinal to cause a no-contest.  He had hoped to get a bye straight to the finals, but promoter Herb Simmons set up the semifinal as a triple threat instead.  Flanagan scored a quick win over Johnny Blade to reach the quarterfinals while Curtis edged out a win over recent rival Moondog Rover.  While it seemed like the two "rulebreakers" would work together against Flash, Houston hadn't forgotten about the Wylde Ride(Flatliner) he had taken in Millstadt and understandably didn't trust the self-professed "Lion Of The Lou".  When Wyldefyre attempted to get involved, Flash picked her up over his head and threw her onto Wylde and Houston at ringside!  Wylde and Houston both targeted Flanagan's arm in the matchup, but he managed to roll up Houston with a handful of tights in 8:48 to get to the finals!  Wylde was unhappy since he wasn't the one defeated...I'm sure we haven't heard the end of that.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Mountain Dew, pizza rolls, Pepsi, and a hamburger(they had run out of cheeseburgers at the end of the night when concessions were half price).  I managed to score some leftover pizza rolls and a bag of potato chips at the end of the night as well...yeahhhhh, diet starts tomorrow.

Herb interviewed Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance promoter Tony Casta and Nick Ridenour of the St. Louis Wrestling Hall Of Fame...they announced that "The Fabulous Flying Frenchman" Edouard Carpentier would be the next inductee.  He was slightly before my time, but the Wrestling Explosion flashback segments have featured him on a few occasions.

Moondog Rover vs. "The Unstable" Dave Vaughn:  This was a rematch from Millstadt where Rover won by disqualification due to Wylde's blatant interference.  Vaughn's always had the talent in the ring, but his recent state of mind has often derailed any strategy.  Such was the case here, as he got frustrated quickly and hit Moondog with his own bone for the DQ in 3:31.  Wylde hit the ring to add more damage as they laid out Rover with their version of Total Elimination(spinning heel kick/legsweep combo).  Wyldefyre made her presence known as she attempted to protect Moondog again...that allowed Moondog to recover and brawl with Wylde.  In the meantime, Vaughn got in the face of Abullah The Butcher at ringside...even in a wheelchair, Abdullah got in a few good shots on Mr. Unstable!

"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson vs. Johnny Blade(w/ Big Daddy):  Former champion Jackson had a definite edge in experience.  However, he tweaked his knee while leapfrogging over Blade; Blade has been using the figure-four leglock in recent months and he focused his attack on the injury.  Jackson did his best to fight back, but the damage was too much for him and Blade caught him in the figure-four.  Jackson was saved by the bell as the 10:00 time limit expired before Jackson could potentially surrender.  Words were exchanged over whether Jackson could have escaped the hold; a rematch was teased for June as Jackson said that his Texas Cloverleaf was the superior submission hold.

"Ironman" Ken Kasa, Heath Hatton, & "Your Canadian Hero" Sean Vincent vs. Superstar Steve Fender, Ax Allwardt, & Bubba Troll(w/ Travis Cook):  The fan favorite trio was loaded up with two former Classic Wrestling Champions as well as the SICW "Ambassador".  Travis Cook's side featured two veteran competitors and the super heavyweight Troll.  The rulebreaking trio attacked before the opening bell and the six men brawled in and around the ring.  Once things finally settled down, Vincent was cut off from his corner for several minutes by the opposing team...Hatton finally got the tag and went to war with his long-time rival Ax.  As the action broke down between the other combatants, Heath was able to score the flash pin on Ax with a crucifix in 12:20.

Intermission numero dos~!  Programming note:  SICW events will start earlier at 7:00 PM beginning in June.

Herb interviewed Charlie Thesz after the second intermission, relating stories about her husband's storied wrestling career.

Flash Flanagan vs. "The Icon" Chris Hargas(w/ Travis Cook), Classic Title Tournament Final, Best-Of-3-Falls Match, Special Guest Referee "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz:  Hargas defeated The Big Texan, Gary Jackson, and Ken Kasa to reach the finals; he was the fresh competitor compared to Flash who had already competed and was favoring his arm.  Cruz had plenty of history with both Flanagan and Travis Cook, but he had promised to be unbiased.  Cook couldn't resist getting involved and that led to Hargas winning the first fall; Flanagan attempted to suplex Hargas back into the ring, but Cook grabbed Flash's foot and held it as Hargas fell on top for the pin in 8:12.  Travis kept sticking his nose into the matchup until Ricky finally hauled off and belted him off the ring apron.  Flanagan fought back to even the score in 11:05 after a Tree Of Woe double-stomp off the top rope.

As Flash hoped to maintain his momentum, Cowboy Marc Houston made his presence known; Flash left the ring to confront Houston during the rest period between falls.  That didn't end well as Houston ran Flanagan shoulder-first into the ringpost...Big Daddy seemed to be encouraging Houston's actions from the sidelines, so perhaps he's found a new protege.  Cook demanded that Flanagan be counted out to give Hargas the final fall, but Cruz allowed Flanagan a longer rest period for the sake of fairness.  Unfortunately the damage had already been done; Flash did his best to stay in the fight, but Hargas locked on the Crippler Crossface...Flash never surrendered, but he passed out in the hold and the referee called for the bell in 17:23 after three arm drops!  "The Icon" Chris Hargas had become the new SICW Classic Wrestling Champion, much to the delight of his manager who finally had "his" championship back!

Bruiser Brody Memorial Battle Royal:  The match featured everyone on the card who hadn't been involved in the tournament; Gary Jackson was an exception as he wanted to compete, but he was kept out of the match due to his earlier leg injury.  The field consisted of fifteen competitors at that point; previous winners of the Brody battle royal were Ron Powers and The Big Texan.  (Heath Hatton had won a battle royal at the May show in 2014, but I don't think it was officially designated as the Bruiser Brody Memorial Battle Royal at that time.)  Several wrestlers ganged up on Troll to eliminate him first, taking out the biggest man in the match.  The rest of the eliminations:  Mauler McDarby, Ax Allwardt, Shawn Santel, "The Unstable" Dave Vaughn, Bobby D, "The Enforcer" Jimmy D, "Big Country" Clint Poe, Moondog Rover, and Johnny Blade.  "Ironman" Ken Kasa and Superstar Steve Fender eliminated each other, leaving the final three as Heath Hatton, "Your Canadian Hero" Sean Vincent, and The Big Texan; Hatton and Texan grappled to the ring apron, but Vincent was able to dropkick them both to the floor to win in 8:34!  Sean Vincent scored the surprise win and was awarded the Brody Memorial trophy by Barbara Goodish to close out the show!

It was another fine evening of wrestling at the East Carondelet Community Center; they'll return to the venue on June 17th with the earlier start time of 7:00 PM.  It was just announced that Chris Hargas' first title defense would be against Sean Vincent, riding the momentum of his battle royal victory.

The weekend wasn't quite over yet, but that's another story for another time...tune in next time.  Same Pat-Time, Same Pat-Channel.

That's my special comment for this, the twenty-second wrestling show I've attended in the year 2017.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

Dynamo Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Dynamo Pro Wrestling show at the Concordia Turners Gymnasium in St. Louis, Missouri.

DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.

Dynamo's been in limbo for a while, searching for steady venues while trying to find its niche in a suddenly-loaded St. Louis wrestling scene.  It wasn't as difficult when there were only a handful of other groups in the region, but nowadays there can be multiple choices in a weekend.  On this Saturday, World League Wrestling had a show in Troy, MO and the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance had its monthly offering at the South Broadway Athletic Club in a different part of the STL.

The company experienced the departure of several key players at the end of 2016; Ricky Cruz retired and several wrestlers(Jake Dirden, Kevin Lee Davidson, and Mike Outlaw) departed for the National Wrasslin' League with exclusive deals.  On top of that, D-1 Champion Michael Elgin's students haven't been as available as in the past.  "The Valedictorian" Keon Option(who happens to be one-half of the current Tag Team Champions) has been M.I.A. for several months, leaving the tag scene up in the air.

Concordia Turners Gym has the potential to be a really good venue for the company; it reminded me a bit of the Wild Acres Gym in Overland, MO where Gateway Championship Wrestling had many key shows.  The turnout wasn't that big, but the curse of nice weather(not to mention the other area shows) may have been a factor.  Talent availability didn't help as Heavyweight Champion Brandon Aarons was competing in California, meaning no current titleholders were at the event.

Your ring announcers were Chris Roedel & Luke Roberts; your referee was Scott Ramsey.

Nero vs. The Snitch:  Nero is a competitor from the Quincy, Illinois area and yes, I had to be the asshole who shouted out "I KNEEEEEW YOU'D COOOOOME!"  I hadn't seen him before, but he looked like a solid competitor...hopefully he'll be back.  He pulled off some impressive aerial moves, including a somersaulting suicide dive a la Homicide.  Snitch used some underhanded tactics to score the win, pushing the ref into the ropes to crotch Nero on the turnbuckles.  After that, Snitch got the pinfall with feet on the ropes in 9:02.

Frodo "The Ghost" Meyer vs. Mauler McDarby:  I've underestimated Frodo a bit in my short time seeing him, but appearances can be deceiving; he's been putting in the work and competing for several area promotions.  McDarby is underrated in his own right and I've been one of the biggest advocates for him and Shawn Santel.  It looked like things would play out the same way as they did at Cinco De Mayo with C.J. Shine; the referee confiscated McDarby's shillelagh, only for McDarby to coldcock Frodo with brass knuckles while the referee was getting the original weapon out of the ring.  McDarby got the three-count in 5:20, but he made the mistake of hiding the knucks under his arm and they fell to the mat when the official raised his hand.  That led to a decision reversal and Frodo got the DQ victory...McDarby attempted to attack his opponent after the bell, only to be dispatched with a wheelbarrow DDT.

Outtkast vs. "The Alternative" Ozzie Gallagher:  Gallagher made his return to action at Cinco De Mayo with shorter hair(thanks to a mask vs. hair match with Makaze several months ago); he was hoping to establish himself in the D-1 Title picture by beating the former two-time titleholder.  I was sitting with longtime area wrestling fan Tommy Peterson and we recalled Outtkast's days in Gateway Championship Wrestling; while Outtkast is bulkier than he was in his light heavyweight days, he never lost the agility.  For whatever reason, he's rarely ventured outside of the St. Louis wrestling scene; he appeared a handful of times for 3XW in Iowa and NWA Wildside in Georgia.  It may take some time for Gallagher to get back on the winning track, as he lost to Tag Team Champion Justin D'Air at Cinco De Mayo.  He put up a good fight against the former D-1 and Tag Champ, but Outtkast put him away with the Case Study in 9:00.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Nachos and a Coca-Cola.

C.J. Shine vs. "The Wind Of Destruction" Makaze:  Shine was in his usual party mood, dancing with several ringside fans(I confess to nothing) as well as the referee and ring announcer Chirs Roedel.  Makaze wasn't necessarily a "rulebreaker" at Cinco De Mayo, but he was in a surly mood against Frodo Meyer and C.J. Shine.  Prior to the bout, Makaze apologized for his previous actions and said he got carried away...but the handshake was marred by a cheapshot by the masked man.  He probably hoped to ride the wave of momentum after his win over Ozzie Gallagher, but he came up short against then-D-1 Champion Outtkast...frustration can make anyone resort to excessive measures.  Makaze had the big edge in experience, but he made a crucial mistake when he missed a plancha to the floor.  Despite that, he recovered enough to deliver his signature Northern Lights fisherman suplex...but Shine surprisingly kicked out at two.  Shine managed to rally against his veteran opponent...it seemed like the youngster was overmatched, but he overcame the odds and got the upset win with a springboard dropkick in 9:05!  Shine celebrated after the match, even encouraging the referee to do his own cartwheel...all righty then.

"Lights Out" Adrian Surge vs. "The Filipino Warrior" Elvis Aliaga:  This match was initially pushed as a top-contenders bout with Heavyweight Champion Brandon Aarons out of town; that put Surge in the odd position of being the fan favorite against Aliaga.  It was also the only match that was announced ahead of time...the wrestling talent of the area was spread out across Dynamo, MMWA, and WLW (among other places).  Both men had challenged Aarons for his title in recent months; Aliaga came up short against Aarons in February while Surge got a DQ win over the champion at Cinco De Mayo, only to fall to him in a no-disqualification bout later in the day.  In front of a fresh audience, Surge had no problem with garnering the fan support against the arrogant Filipino.  Aliaga gained the advantage and appeared to be setting up for his T.C.B.(Falcon Arrow) finisher, but Surge double-legged him to the mat and got the flash pin with a jackknife cradle in 15:50!

Since the show wrapped up fairly early, I chatted with a few people before departing and then made my way to the South Broadway Athletic Club...but I only arrived in time to see the final match of the night(Gary Jackson & Brian James vs. A.J. Williams & B.T. Daramola).  I had to catch the ladder match on YouTube, but it was a tremendous outing.
