Comedy Part 773: Effingham Unplugged

Location:  Pagel's Silver Dollar Lanes in Effingham, IL
Emcee:  Josh Funneman
After:  Spencer Tegtmeyer
Before:  Lucas Hinderliter

We had a really good audience and got enough donations that the comedians got a bit of extra pay...woo.  The show had its hiccups, particularly the incompatibility of the sound system with the speakers...in other words, we had to perform without a microphone.  I had a good ten-minute set and everyone did really well in overcoming the ambiance of a Friday night bowling alley.  I'm tired today, but it was a fun road trip...

Comedy Part 772: Roast Veach

Location: Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee: Landon Meyer
After: Lucas Hinderliter
Before: Josh Funneman

Roasts are not exactly my forte; they do force comedians to write material for the occasion. I wasn't too smooth in my set, but I had a few clever lines about roastee Bruce Veach and the rest of the dais. It was a lot of fun and drew a good audience, which is always a plus. Next up for me, I’m performing at a show in Effingham on Friday night...WOO~!

WOE Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about the Wrestling Over Everything show on Sunday, September 10th at the River's Edge Community Center in Centreville, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

After the one-hour drive to World League Wrestling the previous night, the shorter trip to WOE was a welcome change of pace.  They had a decent turnout and seem to be building a solid audience in Centreville.

Your ring announcer was Moe Romero-Kennedy; your referee was Jason Pemberton.

Da'Marius Jones started off the show with a promo, leading into a verbal confrontation with The Landlord to set up his Interstate Title match with LaMarcus Clinton later in the night.

Thomas Muños vs. Flavio Augusto:  After competing as a fan favorite at the WLW show, Augusto was decidedly not in that role on this night.  I've been seeing Muños a bit more regularly in this area lately.  I don't know if this was a match I would have positioned as the show opener, but that's why I'm not a booker.  Muños missed a spear in the corner and Augusto rolled him up with a handful of tights(HEEL~!) for the win in 5:14.

Brandon Espinosa vs. "The Roman Dynasty" Karim Brigante:  Augusto is announced as representing the Roman Dynasty, so I guess the Dynasty is more than one person now.  I need a scorecard to keep track of where to cheer Espinosa...he was the good guy on this occasion.  After bulking up for a little while, Espy seems to be slimming back down and dusting off the aerial arsenal...he needed that against a larger opponent like Karim.  Espinosa got the tapout win with the cross-armbreaker in 8:21.

Money & Gold(Taylor Champion & Trystan Brady Shadeux) vs. The Sabotage Squad(Krispy 2 Pop & John Boi)(w/ The Landlord), street fight:  This one got out of control in a hurry and the brawl even traveled completely out of the building at one point!  Champion and Shadeux hit a LOT of dives to the floor, some better than others.  I know this style of match calls for that kind of over-the-top action, but I'm surprised Champion doesn't focus on his technical background more than he does.  LaMarcus Clinton ran interference, leading to the Squad hitting a modified Hart Attack(with Krispy jumping off the top rope) to land Shadeux on a garbage can...L.M.C. added a 450 Splash and Krispy got the pinfall in 12:19.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Two Coca-Colas and chili cheese Fritos.

"The Neon Icon" Justin D'Air(w/ Lady D'Air) vs. P.T. Beckham:  Beckham is the artist formerly known as Shane "The Pain Train" Petrokovich; these two had a competitive match at the previous WOE show with D'Air emerging victorious, but Beckham attacked D'Air after the bell which led to this grudge rematch.  Lady D'Air usually doesn't stay at ringside for Justin's matches but she was in his corner for this one...Beckham raised Justin's ire by creeping on his lady on a few occasions.  D'Air's aerial range and hangtime are impressive as he's able to hit opponents on the far opposite side of the ring!  Beckham rolled out of the ring for a breather and got in Lady D'Air's face once again...Justin rushed in to break things up, but P.T. sidestepped him and Justin accidentally struck his valet!  D'Air was stunned over the accident and Beckham was able to take advantage, finishing with a top-rope elbowdrop in 6:46.  This was Lady D'Air's first physical involvement in the action...I hadn't known if she was training to wrestle, but perhaps its a possibility in the future.  Stay tuned, as they say...

Prince Moses(w/ B.T. Daramola) vs. Benjamin Ulysses Trust:  These two crossed paths at the August show, ending with Trust taking a walk for the countout loss.  Moses went aerial to gain an advantage and landed a top-rope elbowdrop, but climbed the turnbuckles again and got caught in a modified Death Valley Driver, followed by an Air Raid Crash onto the knee.  Trust pummeled Moses and the referee attempted to back him off, but Trust lost his cool and shoved the referee away twice...this got him disqualified in 9:01.  I suspect this issue is far from over.

LaMarcus Clinton(w/ The Landlord & The Sabotage Squad) vs. "2.0" Da'Marius Jones for the Interstate Title, For Whom The Bell Tolls Match:  Since Landlord didn't allow the bell to be rung when Jones had rightly beaten L.M.C. the month before, this match could only be won by the participant ringing the bell that was set up on the entrance stage.  Since it was essentially no-DQ, L.M.C.'s backup got involved on his behalf...eventually Taylor Champion and Brady Shadeux entered the scene to even the odds.  Hoever, it wasn't quite enough as the titleholder had an extra ace up his sleeve...as Jones was in position to ring the bell and win the match, B.T. Daramola swiped it and ran to the ring with it.  (So much for his tag team with Prince Moses...)  He brought it straight to L.M.C. who rung the bell for the win in 13:15...I expected better matches out of this pairing but for whatever reason they haven't clicked as well as I would have thought.

Savanna Stone vs. Miss Monica Passeri:  These two crossed paths for the first time in Dynamo Pro with Monica scoring the win after a distraction by Rahne Victoria.  Savanna evened the store by pinning Monica in a triple threat match that also involved Laynie Luck.  Savanna and Rahne have both been traveling to new territories in recent weeks, which is good to see...I look forward to seeing how they do.  Monica won a good competitive matchup in 6:02 after the roundhouse kick.

"The Infamous" Tyler Copeland vs. Richard Faith for the Heavyweight Title:  While Faith had the size advantage over the new titleholder, Copeland was riding a wave of momentum after unseating the long-time titleholder Leone Mephisto in August.  The match was shorter than expected but a good outing from both men...Copeland tried for the Last Chancery a few times, but finally got it in the middle of the ring and Faith tapped out in 7:05.

Copeland had little time to celebrate his victory as an unidentified figure walked down the aisle in a Leone Mephisto T-shirt and a pig mask...it turned out to be feint as the real Mephisto blindsided Copeland with a kendo stick!  Mephisto dropped Copeland with two Air Raid Crashes, then ranted and raved about his title loss and how he NEEDED to get the championship back...unfortunately dropping at least one F-bomb in the process(whoops).  Looks like that rematch is on tap for the next show in October...

Apologies for how far behind I am on these commentaries...this past weekend had no local wrestling events and next weekend only has the National Wrasslin' League show in O'Fallon, Missouri on Friday.  As it turns out, I have a comedy show in Effingham on Friday night so I'll have to miss the NWL event.  Cape Championship Wrestling has a show on Saturday which I may check out if I'm feeling up to it.  I've still got to cover last week's shows from Outlaw Wrestling and Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling...

So far, October looks like this:
-Friday 10/6:  High Risk Wrestling in Warsaw, MO
-Saturday 10/7:  World League Wrestling in Troy, MO; Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in Swansea, IL; Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance in St. Louis, MO(South Broadway Athletic Club
-Saturday 10/14:  World Powerhouse Wrestling in Madison, IL
-Sunday 10/15:  Glory Pro Wrestling in Alton, IL; Wrestling Over Everything in Centreville, IL
-Saturday 10/21:  Proving Ground Pro in Taylor Springs, IL; SICW in East Carondelet, IL
-Saturday 10/28:  SICW in Caseyville, IL

That's my special comment for this, the forty-seventh wrestling show I've attended in the year 2017.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

Comedy Part 771: Hey Guys, Be Ready To Perform

Location:  Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee:  Jamie Fritz
Headliner:  Charlie Wiener

I went to the 7:00 show at Hey Guys and Bruce Veach asked if I wanted to do a guest set at the 9:15 show, so yay.  I was dressed in shorts and literally drove to Target between shows to buy jeans...I'd been needing to get some new jeans anyway.  (I'm told you shouldn't wear shorts on stage...I think someone wrote a book about that.)  I had a solid five-minute set in front of a good audience at a weekend show...always nice to do.  Hopefully I can do more on the weekend shows...but the roast of Bruce Veach on Wednesday will probably be my next stage appearance.

Comedy Part 770: Hey Guys, Warming Up For The Roast

Location:  Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee:  Tom Brown
After:  Ron Finger
Before:  Mike McGuire

I managed to drop the microphone as I was getting on stage...ugh.  It wasn't exactly a charmed week for comedy as the turnout was reportedly low for the Westport Funny Bone's open-mic on Tuesday and Helium's open-mic on Wednesday was cancelled due to the protest at the Galleria.  I felt like I had a decent set, all things considered...last week was busy but this was my only open-mic for the week.  I need to get into the habit of signing up for Helium's open-mic...but next Wednesday is the roast of Bruce Veach at Hey Guys so I'll have to take a pass for next week.

WLW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about last Saturday's World League Wrestling show at the Race Wrestling Arena in Troy, Missouri.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

The choices for this particular Saturday were WLW and the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance at the South Broadway Athletic Club in St. Louis; I attended this event and caught up on the MMWA show via YouTube.  Going into the show, I only knew the main event...the Harley Race Invitational Tournament semifinals would take place, but the actual matches were up in the air.

Your ring announcers were Brian Thompson & Dane Horst; your referees were Martin Kattich & Richard White.

Second Chance Battle Royal-Harley Race Invitational Tournament:  Due to the disqualification finish in the Warwick Stephans-Steve Fender first-round bout, this battle royal would determine who would advance to the semifinals; Stephans and Fender were both in the bout along with first-round eliminations Brandon Espinosa, Rex Fults, and Orion Creed(w/ "Can-Do" Curtis Dearling).  Newcomers "The Heartthrob" Jaden Roller and Jordan "The Vision" Vinson rounded out the field.  Creed had big aspirations, but he was quickly sent to the floor in 2:59 by Fender and Vinson's double clothesline.  Vinson was the next to go; Roller stunned him with a superkick and sent him floorward in 4:51.  Espinosa took Roller out of the ring with a rana in 5:13.  An exchange between Espy and Rex led to Rex surprisingly eliminating Espy, giving him a Rock Bottom onto the ring frame while standing within the ropes; Espinosa fell out to the floor in 10:28.  Creed and Curtis ran back out to pull Rex to the floor in 12:20, continuing their feud.  That left Stephans and Fender to settle their issues...in a reversal of their previous match result, Fender eliminated Stephans in 12:51 to reclaim his spot in the tournament.

"The" Ace Hawkins vs. Flavio Augusto for the MWR Missouri Title:  Dane Horst ring-announced for this one match.  Augusto(or "Gusto" if you go by the entrance video) was making his first in-ring appearance to my knowledge.  He had a fine outing for his debut appearance(I honestly don't know if he'd had any matches prior to this); Hawkins got frustrated with his inability to put away the rookie, taking a walk for the countout in 10:03 (and thus retaining his title).  (As it turned out, he hung onto his title the exact same way at MMWA later in the night against Gary Jackson.)

"The Roman Dynasty" Karim Brigante(w/ Women's Champion Miss Monica Passeri) vs. Jayden Fenix, Harley Race Invitational Tournament Semifinal:  Brigante beat Orion Creed to advance in the tournament while Fenix defeated Brandon Espinosa.  Monica became a two-time WLW Women's Champion by defeating Lucy Mendez in Richmond, Missouri last month.  Fenix had his contingent of fans, but he broke their hearts by stomping on their replica belt...aww.  Brigante is a former Heavyweight Champion and the tournament would allow the winner to challenge for any belt of his choice, but Fenix was intent on challenging Jon Webb for the Jr. Heavyweight Title and settling their issue from the original tournament final.  Karim appeared to be on the verge of victory, but Fenix rolled out of the ring after being hit with the pop-up forearm smash.  Fenix somehow managed to recover, delivering his windup short-arm roundhouse kick for the upset win in 11:42!

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count:  Bottle of water, hot dog, Pepsi.  Hey, baby steps on the soda thing.

Kyle Roberts vs. "Superstar" Steve Fender, Harley Race Invitational Tournament Semifinal:  Roberts beat Rex Fults in Richmond to get to this point; Fender won the earlier battle royal(after having initially lost to Warwick Stephans by DQ).  These two have been at war for months, including their interference in each other's matches.  The experience edge was decidedly in the favor of Superstar Steve, but Roberts was motivated to get one up on his rival...after a hard-fought battle, Roberts scored the flash pin with a victory roll in 14:55!  The tournament finals have been set:  Kyle Roberts vs. Jayden Fenix.

Heavyweight Champion "The Legacy" Leland Race vs. Jr. Heavyweight Champion "The Hybrid Ace" Jon Webb, Non-Title 30:00 Ironman Match:  To the best of my knowledge, neither belt was at stake as this was a battle of pride...they fought to a twenty-minute draw at the previous Troy show, so they got more time on this occasion.  While Leland had been a steady fan favorite in recent times, he took on a more aggressive attitude against Webb..  However, his recent jaw injury may have been a weak spot as Webb stunned him with an early superkick, scoring the first fall of the match in 1:26!  Webb attempted to push his advantage and locked Race in a Crippler Crossface, but Race rolled him up into a cradle to even the score at 6:05.

Race attempted to slow the pace and keep Webb grounded...the weardown tactics worked and he was able to secure a submission fall in 11:40 with a sleeper(Webb's arm dropped three times in the hold).  Leland wasn't done as he went up 3-1 with the Go 2 Sleep in 14:05, giving Webb a huge deficit to overcome.  Webb was able to narrow the gap with a surprise small package in 16:19...he hit Sliced Bread #2 but Race was too close to the ropes, so he followed up with a pump knee strike to tie things up in 18:55.

Jayden Fenix decided to stick his nose into things, bringing one of the title belts into the ring...he teased hitting Webb, but instead hit Race to get Webb disqualified in 20:29.  That put Race up 4-3, but his temper got the best of him as he grew frustrated with the referee's counts...finally kicking the official in the groin and getting disqualified himself in 21:45.  That left the official out of it for the home stretch...and Can-Do Curtis came out to ring the bell himself, protesting Orion Creed's recent treatment.  Orion Creed attacked Webb until Race fended him off...so the battle continued as the clock wound down.  Webb hit a corner cannonball and seemed to have a visual pinfall, but the official still hadn't recovered...by the time the ref re-entered the ring, it only resulted in a two-count as the 30:00 time limit expired with a 4-4 draw.  The fans wanted overtime, but the show just ended on that note...it seemed odd for a time-limit draw to lead to a longer stipulation match that ALSO ended in a draw, but such is life and wrestling.

Anywho, the weekend wasn't over yet but that's another story for another time.  Tune in next time:  Same Pat-Time, Same Pat-Channel.

That's my special comment for this, the forty-sixth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2017.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

Comedy Part 769: Hey Guys, Wrapping Up The Tripleheader

Location:  Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee:  Gary Schultz
After:  Gary Schultz
Before:  Andy Hamilton

I thought of several new jokes and tags today, including a few on the drive from work...and they seemed to work pretty well.  It helped that several fresh audience members were in the house(supporting newer comedians) and they hadn't heard my usual material.  Given my current work schedule, doing three open-mics in as many nights was a trying task...probably won't do that again for a while...

Comedy Part 768: Getting Back On The Radar

Location:  Helium Comedy Club
Emcee:  Willie Lynch Jr.
After:  Ken Warner
Before:  Yale Hollander

I hadn't been to Helium in quite a while; I generally preferred the Funny Bone's open-mics on Tuesdays, but Helium has since moved their open-mic shows to Wednesdays.  I had enough time between work and the show to grab dinner at Raising Cane's in the Galleria(one love, *dog bark*).  The open-mics are now held in the bar/garage area instead of the showroom, which is an improvement in my book.  I felt like I had a really good set; I wanted to make a good impression since I hadn't been there in a while.  I formally met the current manager Julie while I was there and it sounds like I got the right kind of notice...woo.  Next up on my personal triple-header is Hey Guys Comedy on Thursday night!

Tuesday, September 12, 2017

Comedy Part 767: I Saw The Sign

Location:  Westport Funny Bone
Emcee:  Brian McDowell
After:  Jamie Fritz
Before:  Steve Poggi

I had supporters in attendance as Rahne Victoria and her fiancee arrived at the show right before I went on stage...Rahne even had a sign for me, which was a first.  I went up fairly early and thought I had a solid set...I did a bit more planning than usual as I went over my joke repertoire earlier in the day.  This will be a busy week for comedy shows as I'm on the list for the Helium open-mic for the first time in a while...that show is tomorrow night at 8, then I've also got the Hey Guys Comedy open-mic on Thursday at 7:30.
