Lucha Underground Season 4 Episode 16

-Commentators:  Matt Striker & Vampiro.
-Striker started the show by reading a prepared letter from promoter Antonio Cueto.  Four men had a chance to punch their ticket to the main event of Ultima Lucha Cuarto on last week's program, so this week they'll fight for the right to challenge LU Champion Marty "The Moth" Martinez:  Pentagon Dark vs. Mil Muertes vs. King Cuerno vs. Dragon Azteca Jr.
-Jack Evans declared his refusal to participate in a match due to dangerous competitors like X.O. Lishus...not to mention dangerous situations like Matanza Cueto destroying his friend Johnny Mundo's wedding.  Promoter Antonio Cueto had a different idea in mind...
-Matanza Cueto(w/ Antonio Cueto) d. Jack Evans with the Wrath Of The Gods(rewind powerslam) (1:22).  Evans was "sacrificed" after the bell.
-Before the scheduled Trios Title Match, Paul London introduced the newly-reorganized Rabbit Tribe:  El Bunny(a darker-clad Mascarita Sagrada) & The White Rabbit; the trio watched the match from the entranceway.
-The Reptile Tribe(Daga, Jeremiah Snake, & Kobra Moon) d. Joey Ryan, X.O. Lishus, & Ivelisse Velez to retain the Trios Titles when Daga made Ryan tap out to the headscissors crucifix hold (5:24).  The Rabbit Tribe attacked Ryan, Lishus, & Ivelisse afterwards.
-"The Savage" Jake Strong d. Drago & Aero Star in a handicap nunchucks match when he made Aero Star tap out to the anklelock (8:28).  Strong broke Drago's ankle with the hold after the bell.
-Pentagon Dark won a four-corner match with Dragon Azteca Jr., King Cuerno, and Mil Muerte.  Fenix went after ring announcer Melissa Santos during the bout, sidetracking Azteca as he came to her aid...after that, Willie Mack got involved and hit Muertes with two Stone Cold Stunners, leading to Pentagon pinning Muertes after a Canadian Destroyer (5:19).  After the match, Mack challenged Muertes to a death match at Ultima Lucha Cuatro.

WWE Mae Young Classic Tournament

WWE NXT

-Commentators:  Mauro Ranallo, Nigel McGuinness, & "Showtime" Percy Watson.
-General Manager S. William Regal kicked off the show, but he was almost immediately interrupted by The Undisputed Era(Adam Cole & NXT Tag Team Champions Roderick Strong & Kyle O'Reilly).  They didn't want to hear about the Aleister Black investigation; Strong & O'Reilly wanted to hear about repercussions against The War Raiders(Todd Hanson & Raymond Rowe) for repeatedly attacking them, while Cole wanted to hear about his rematch for the NXT North American Title against Ricochet (especially with United Kingdom Champion "The Bruiserweight" Pete Dunne getting a title shot before him).  Regal wondered if someone doth protest too much and noted that Cole never ASKED for his title rematch against Ricochet until after Dunne conveniently wore him down.  In two weeks, Cole would get his shot at Ricochet...but it would be a triple threat match with Dunne included.  As for Strong & O'Reilly, they would defend the NXT Tag Titles against The War Raiders in three weeks.
-Earlier today:  Johnny Gargano was interviewed about facing "The Premier Athlete" Tony Nese on next week's show.  He said that he didn't like where his head was at, but he's seeing more clearly now and he's refocused on climbing the ranks.  As Gargano took his leave, he and Candice LeRae were confronted by Lacey Evans who said that a good wife and "lady" should stand by her man at all times instead of splitting off on her own career direction...
-Backstage:  "The Velveteen Dream" Patrick Clark blew off an interview attempt after a photo shoot...though oddly he brought up the Aleister Black situation without the interviewer bringing it up.  Hmm...
-Lars Sullivan d. Victor Orchant(aka Vordell Walker) by DQ when Ethan Carter III attacked Sullivan (1:28).
-Backstage:  Regal found Nikki Cross in his office...she wanted to "play" with Bianca Belair again and Regal said that he would take it under consideration.  After that, Nikki walked off while saying "I know...I know...I know..."
-The Mighty-61(Shane Thorne & Nick Miller) d. The Street Profits(Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) when Thorne pinned Ford with a figure-four jackknife cradle (7:41).
-NXT Women's Champion Kairi Sane d. "The Vision" Vanessa Borne(non-title) with the top-rope diving elbowdrop (3:06).  Shayna Baszler made her entrance to announce that she was invoking her rematch clause...and Kairi accepted the challenge, saying they would meet at Evolution.
-Earlier today:  "Limitless" Keith Lee felt like his successful start in NXT would lead to championship gold soon...he crossed paths with "The Finest" Kona Reeves, who wasn't all that impressed with him.  Lee responded that he wasn't impressed with Reeves' recent lack of in-ring success...perhaps they shall settle it in the squared circle in our near future.
-Next week:  EC3 vs. Lars Sullivan, plus The Forgotten Sons(Jaxson Ryker, Wesley Blake, & Steve Cutler) in action.
-NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa d. Otis Dozovic(w/ Tucker Knight)(non-title) after the hanging DDT (9:39).

-Mustafa Ali fought Hideo Itami to a double countout after Ali hit a 450 Splash off the top rope with Itami laid out on the ring apron (16:28).
-Next week:  Kalisto vs. T.J. Perkins and Akira Tozawa vs. Jack Gallagher.

Comedy Part 813: Nailed It

Location:  Helium Comedy Club
Emcee:  Rob Tee
After:  Spencer Wolf
Before:  Marvin Davis

I went up fairly early and had a really good set...when it's an open-mic, I sometimes stray from my usual format of the early character establishment jokes but not always.  They seemed to go over really well on this night...I'm still working out some of my newer jokes, but my stage time went very well in general.  I have a couple of bigger shows in the upcoming months so I don't want to be too rusty when that time comes...it's a constant proving ground to show how good you can be.  Club open-mics are particularly important since they can lead to paid weekend spots, whether they be hosting or featuring...my next goal/step is to feature at a comedy club, but I haven't hosted at Helium yet so hopefully that can happen in the near future.

MMWA Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance show on Saturday, August 11th at the South Broadway Athletic Club in St. Louis, Missouri.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

This will be remembered as the night I met Rich Swann...err, I will explain.  I hung out with Mike Outlaw for most of the show and a fan approached him, asking if he was Cedric Alexander.  Outlaw jokingly said that he was actually Rich Swann...and the possibly inebriated fan believed him long enough to buy him a few drinks.  Outlaw finally fessed up, even showing the guy his driver's license to prove who he was...and the fan turned out to be an acquaintance of Kevin Lee Davidson's.  Bwahahaha.

(I could have sworn that I also had a Searcher sighting, but I'll put that down as unconfirmed...)

Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus; your referees were Jay King, Shaft, & Nick Ridenour.

Khayman & "Mr. Mustache" Ricky Rodriguez(w/ Abigail) vs. Cruiserweight Champion "2.0" Da'Marius Jones & A.J. Williams:  The announced lineup had El Diablo Loco teaming with Khayman, but the card was shuffled around in a few respects; Rodriguez was scheduled to face Rick Ruby and Jaden Roller was supposed to take on "The Supreme" B.T. Daramola(who was absent).  Khayman has had recent issues with the 2.0 team, though his recent tag team partner Frodo "The Ghost" Meyer had been out of action for the past few months; the numbers caught up to him in July when Jones cost him a match with A.J.  Khayman and Ricky worked well together, but not quite well enough to topple the more experienced duo; Williams pinned Khayman in 11:50 after he and Jones hit the Flapjack/Paydirt combo.

"The Incomparable" Deacon Cash vs. "P.O.D." Damion Cortess:  These two rulebreakers have made a habit of getting in each other's way in pursuit of "Da Bomb" Brian James' Heavyweight Title.  They're also a popular topic of conversation on the internet broadcasts of the MMWA shows.  Cortess had a huge size advantage over Cash, who oddly has dropped weight in his move to heavyweight contention...Cash had a slight experience edge and was able to go toe-to-toe with Cortess on a few occasions.  An unlikely factor played a role in the outcome:  "Dirty" Jason Spurgeon left his broadcast position to heckle Cortess directly.  Cortess turned his attention to the interloper and throttled him at ringside, leading to Cash winning by countout in 10:19.  From what I understood, "Dirty" was suspended as a result(leading to him buying a front-row ticket at the September show).

"Rough Cut" Rick Ruby(w/ Rough-Cut Diamond) vs. "The Heartthrob" Jaden Roller:  This was Roller's MMWA debut and he faced a unique challenge in the form of the lime-green-attired veteran; it was Ruby's first MMWA appearance in a long time, though he has competed for Rampage Championship Wrestling and other area promotions.  Ruby had a huge experience edge, but some underhanded tactics made the difference in this one.  The referee was bumped as Ruby had Roller up in fireman's-carry position, giving Roller the opening to deliver a low blow...one axe kick later, Roller got the cheap win in 9:02.

Drew Abbenhaus interviewed "The Little Blue Dragon" Tootie Lynn Ramsey...truth be told, I had trouble hearing Tootie in the venue.  An open challenge was issued and Commissioner Jim Harris said that an opponent would be set up for Tootie later in the show.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Two Pepsis.

Seven-Man Battle Royal:  I don't THINK this contest had any specific stakes...our contestants(all of whom had competed earlier in the evening) were Khayman, Damion Cortess, Rick Ruby, Deacon Cash, Jaden Roller, Da'Marius Jones, and A.J. Williams.  As you might expect, recent enemies Cortess and Cash went after each other and established tag team Jones/Williams worked together in the early going.  Jones eliminated Khayman first, then Cash got rid of A.J.  Ruby threw out Roller to avenge his earlier defeat, only for Cortess to send Ruby to the floor.  Cortess took advantage of his status as the biggest man in the match, throwing out Jones and then Cash to win the battle royal in a brisk 4:01.

"The Little Blue Dragon" Tootie Lynn Ramsey vs. El Diablo Loco:  Despite Loco previously competing for MMWA as a fan favorite, he was a bit more aggressive on this night.  Do what you have to do to win, I suppose...though it wasn't quite enough here.  Tootie rallied with her striking ability, finishing with the knee trembler in 5:21.

"Da Bomb" Brian James vs. Moondog Rover for the Heavyweight Title:  Moondog defeated The Big Texan in July to earn this title shot...unfortunately, that didn't end their long-standing grudge as Texan attacked Moondog from behind as he made his entrance.  It took a lot of manpower to get the Texan away from the ring area so the main event could start.  I didn't expect a technical classic, but James' more refined style was a contrast to Rover's straightforward brawling.  Moondog's unorthodox style would backfire on him in the end, as he blatantly hit the champion with his trademark bone and got disqualified in 7:49.  The issues between these men (as well as Texan) went unsettled on this night...

I will get more of these done, I promise...har har.

Resurgence Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about the Glory Pro Wrestling: Resurgence show on Sunday, August 5th at the Improvement Association in Swansea, Illinois.

While Glory Pro tends to draw very well, the fans seem to have gotten the impression that Resurgence isn't quite as worthwhile.  That's not saying anything about the show quality, but the bigger names tend to appear on the main Glory Pro events so they draw better.  That can be a tough side to hitching your success on outside talents; your core group of competitors are potentially seen in a lesser light.  I couldn't say what would improve things for Resurgence, but I suppose it's not for me to say as an individual fan.

Your ring announcer was Ben Simon; your referees were Jack Griffin and Steven Bailey.

Ryder Reid & Maverick West vs. Frank Wyatt & Frankie Flynn:  I didn't know any of the guys in the preshow match besides Wyatt; I liked Flynn's look and charater.  Flynn was trained by Johnny Gargano & Candice LeRae, which is a pretty good note on one's resume.  Reid hails from Cleveland so I imagine a carload of guys traveled from Ohio for the show; West's Twitter bio has him as a K.C. guy who works for Kansas City Xtreme Wrestling.  The good guys got the victory when West pinned Flynn after a swanton bomb by Reid in 8:01.

Cornelius Wyverstone vs. "The Hawkeye" Steve Manders vs. "Privilege Personified" Rasheed Ali vs. "The Mercenary" Graham Bell vs. "Fresh 2 Death" Pretty Boy Smooth vs. "Chainsaw" Stephen M. King:  I had seen Manders once at the Zero-One USA show I attended in May; the only competitor I didn't know was Smooth, who made quite an impression with his size and ability.  Bell's bazooka is now rigged to emit flames from the barrel...hope he's careful in buildings with sensitive sprinkler systems.  I don't think we'd seen Wyverstone around here since the last event of the previous incarnation of Resurgence; he's a regular for KCXW.  There was at least one signature big-guy-squareoff between Smooth and King in this one; I'm pretty sure those are contractually obligated.  In the end, Smooth pinned Bell after a full nelson faceplant(Darren Young's old finisher) in 6:43.

Alpha Omega(Camaro Jackson & Kenny Alfonso) vs. The Hysteria("Six-Foot Swole" Cole Radrick & Sage Philips):  Around these parts we usually see Camaro Jackson in singles competition, but Kenny Alfonso was in the house for this tag bout.  With several local promotions hurting for teams, hopefully these duos can move into contention for someone's belts.  This was one of my favorite matches of the night...hopefully we can see more of these guys in this area.  The finish saw Jackson pin Radrick after he and Alfonso hit their version of the Hart Attack (with Alfonso delivering a Slingblade instead of the usual hooking clothesline) in 12:38.

Edvin Kudic vs. Matt Kenway:  This match was originally scheduled for the Resurgence Title tournament earlier in the year, but Kenway was sidelined by an injury.  THE PRIDE EXPLODES~!  Kudic has bounced back and forth between fan favorite and rulebreaker in the past several months, but he was the definite "good guy" here against the seemingly universally-hated Kenway.  Kudic went into the match with a shoulder brace, which can often be a bullseye on an injured body part and this instance was no exception.  Many fans expected Kenway to capitalize on the bad shoulder and come out victorious, but Kudic managed to reverse an O'Connor Roll for the flash pin in 11:42!  Kenway didn't take the loss well as he attacked his former tag team partner after the bell, dropping him with a brainbuster.

"The Master Of Hairflips" Brandon Aarons vs. Tony Esteem:  Esteem has primarily competed for Dynamo Pro and was making his Resurgence debut here against the former Dynamo Heavyweight Champion.  Aarons had recently returned to action after a hiatus of several months but showed no signs of rust...as the joke goes, he must have made a trip to Ring Ziebart.  *crickets*  Yeahhhhh, I'm old.  Esteem pulled out all the stops, getting a near-fall after his signature headlock driver...but Aarons retaliated with the Hairflip Suplex(half-nelson suplex) before following up with the close-range superkick, getting the win in 6:43.

Shigehiro Irie vs. Kevin Lee Davidson:  Cue HOSS BATTLE~!  We hadn't seen Irie in the area in quite a while and hopefully it won't be as long before we see him again.  It was relatively short, but with the artillery these guys were exchanging, it would take the human equivalent of a tank to withstand it all for long (which these two are, now that I think about it).  The finish was particularly memorable as K.L.D. went for his spinning heel kick, but Irie avoided it AND caught him in the sleeper and bodyscissors in one fluid motion!  Davidson tapped out in 5:54...I would be perfectly fine with seeing these two battle again in the future.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Pizza and root beer(courtesy of Timothy Miller) and birthday cake(courtesy of Sam Johner).  Had a chance to chat with the young lady who briefly competed for Wrestling Invades America as Kandi Kane; there weren't many other women wrestling when she got into things, but things have improved in that category recently.  I also met female wrestler Jinx(who will hopefully be competing in this area down the line).

"The Big Mustache On Campus" Mikey McFinnegan vs. "The Canadian Crusher" A.J. Sanchez:  Sanchez is a big boy.  Mikey ran around the building to greet his fans and 100% surprised me by grabbing me in a big hug when he got to my side of the ring...heh.  This reminded me of Mikey's match with Satu Jinn a few months back where he stalled a bunch to rile up his bigger opponent...on this night, he goofed around with the fans a bunch and even hid under the ring for a short time.  Once the two went toe-to-toe, things shifted slightly in favor of Sanchez...but one can never underestimate McFinnegan when it comes to ring acumen.  Mikey muscled up for the HULK/ANDRE BODYSLAM OF DOOM before finishing with a Shining Enzuigiri in 14:15.

Savanna Stone & "The Little Blue Dragon" Tootie Lynn Ramsey vs. "The Empress Of Evil" Rahne Victoria & Sophie King:  The Midwest women's division was in full force on this night with plenty of history between everyone involved; they didn't even wait for the opening bell as all four women brawled before the match could officially be started.  Things settled down into a standard tag match with some solid action; Savanna and Tootie had a slight edge in terms of team experience, but Rahne and Sophie had fewer qualms about bending or outright breaking the rules.  Sophie's obsession with "breaking stone" led to her bringing a hammer to ringside; once the match broke down and the referee lost control, the weapon came into play as Sophie nailed Savanna in the midsection with it.  That was enough for Sophie to score the tainted three-count in 7:22...this story is far from over, as they say.

James Brady vs. Roy "The Strangler" Lewis:  This was Brady's third match, but his first two occurred earlier in the weekend so he's brand new to in-ring competition.  I sometimes think of Lewis as a "veteran" since I've seen him around shows for so long, forgetting that he's only been an active wrestler for a few years.  At any rate, I wouldn't have known that Brady was so new if I hadn't been told beforehand...both guys did a tremendous job here.  Lewis had control of the bout, but he couldn't quite put Brady away; Brady surprised him with a small package for the upset win in 8:57!

Air Wolf vs. "The Canadian Hercules" Tyler Colton for the Resurgence Title:  Air Wolf has become a popular competitor in this area in a short amount of time...Colton hadn't appeared here very often, so I don't think anyone in the building was expecting a title change despite the significant size and experience difference.  The match was really good but didn't seem to have a lot of crowd interest for that reason...then Colton hit a sitout powerbomb and won the title in 12:39!  I definitely didn't see that coming...I'll be interested to see how things pan out when the next Resurgence show is set up.

Okay, I'm still REALLY behind but I'm making some progress...

Upcoming shows look like this:
-Friday 9/21:  Dynamo Pro in St. Louis, MO(Concordia Turners)

That's my special comment for this, the forty-seventh wrestling show I've attended in the year 2018.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.
