Comedy Part 818: Back To Breese

Location:  Breese American Legion Hall
Emcee:  Jerry Wuhl
After:  Jerry Wuhl
Before:  Wayne Wiskow
Headliner:  Christine Stedman

My comedy doubleheader went swimmingly as there was a really good crowd in the basement room known as "The Bunker".  It had been almost exactly three years since I had performed at that venue...paid gigs are always nice and I timed my set at around 18 minutes.  I feel like I need to build stronger material for the later parts of a long set and I haven't had a truly strong closing joke in quite some time...so hopefully I can work on those in the upcoming months.  I have two paid gigs in December...Friday the 7th in Centralia IL and Friday the 14th in Lincoln IL.  Hope to see you at one of my upcoming shows!

Comedy Part 817: Mystic Schitt's Creek

Location:  Way Out Club
Emcees:  Micaela Mohr & Rebecca Kearney
After:  Tiel Pierce
Before:  Spencer Tegtmeyer

This was my second time at the Way Out Club after having performed on Tree Sanchez's Happy Tree & Friends showcase.  The show featured horoscope and tarot card readings between comics, giving the show a unique vibe.  Two newer comics went up before Tiel, Pat Ryan and John Green...I feel like I've been out of the loop since I haven't been to open-mics in quite a while.  I felt like my set went really well and I'll be making it a doubleheader tonight as I'm driving out to Breese, Illinois for a show with Christine Stedman and Wayne Wiskow...good times!

PWCS Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about the Pro Wrestling Championship Series show on Friday, October 5th at the Spaulding Hall Club in Alton, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

The unfortunate side effect of running shows in Alton every month is that the building seemingly got burned out to an extent (attendance was noticably down for the September show, as I saw via Powerbomb.tv).  Also, with St. Louis Anarchy positioning itself as the more important of the two groups, PWCS has suffered in terms of attendance.  I'm not usually one to headcount, but this event had MAYBE fifty fans in attendance...ouch.

Your ring announcer was Chris Kaelin; your referees were Steve Reagans & Greg Peebles.

Starting scoreboard:  Blacklist/Ego Busters 5-4, Resurgence/Submission Squad 4-5.  The entire season saw the win-loss records stay relatively close to each other, so any stable had a legitimate chance of making it to the championship match.

Mighty Micah vs. "Lights Out" Adrian Surge(Ego Busters):  If Micah won this match, he would take Surge's place in the Ego Busters stable.  Surge didn't take Micah too seriously and paid for his cavalier attitude on a few occasions.  Despite that, it seemed like Surge would score a decisive victory...but Micah countered a spinebuster attempt and small-packaged Surge for the flash pin in 9:41!  (Hmm, the newly-crowned Dynamo Pro Heavyweight Champion losing to a Kansas City rookie in the opener?  I imagine someone backstage got a good laugh out of that...)

Dallas Cayde(Submission Squad) & Shane Sanders(Resurgence) vs. Big Chris Mac(Blacklist) & "Privilege Personified" Rasheed Ali(Ego Busters):  This tag match was set up as featuring members from each stable being forced to team up...they had to win to improve their group's standing.  Ali came out with Sanders in his corner, but was shocked when Sanders was announced as the Resurgence representative...they'd had some tension in the past, but now they were set to be across the ring from each other.  Ali fully expected Sanders to not fight him...Sanders wasn't exactly on the same page with Cayde, so Mac and Ali had slightly better teamwork than their opponents.  The finish saw Ali miss a blind tag on the other side and roll up Cayde, only for Sanders to come in and roll up Ali for the three-count in 9:16!  Ali confronted Sanders over his apparent betrayal, only to receive a powerslam in response...ladies and gentlemen, we have a face turn.  (Resurgence/Submission Squad/Blacklist/Ego Busters 5-5)

Mike Outlaw(Resurgence) vs. "The Wildman From The Ozarks" Alex Herzog(Blacklist):  I wondered whether Dynamo's singles champions would go 0-2 for the night, though at least in this case Outlaw and Herzog were about even on the PWCS totem pole.  Herzog's size and power advantage were coupled with his experience edge...while Outlaw had more recent singles success, he had a lot of factors going against him in this one.  On top of that, trying to win a striking contest with a pure brawler like Herzog is a tough prospect.  With all that in mind, the outcome wasn't QUITE as big of an upset as it seemed to be on the surface...I imagine a lot of people expected Outlaw to win, but it was Herzog who scored a huge victory with his chokelift Flatliner in 7:12!  (Blacklist 6-5, Submission Squad/Ego Busters 5-5, Resurgence 5-6)

"The Dirty Rook" Mat Fitchett(Resurgence) vs. Matt Kenway(Blacklist):  With the standings so close, every win and loss was critical on the final evening of competition.  Kenway pushed his size advantage and focused his attack on the ribs of Fitchett...but Fitchett fought back and got a close near-fall after a spear.  Fitchett seemed to be on his way to a win, but Greg Jovi ran out to cheapshot Fitchett behind the official's back...that led to Kenway winning with a fireman's-carry double-knee gutbuster in 9:45.  (Blacklist 7-5, Submission Squad/Ego Busters 5-5, Resurgence 5-7)  After the match, Jovi ran his mouth about Fitchett as well as Davey Vega's contract with the Ego Busters...Fitchett wanted Vega freed from the stable so The Besties In The World could join forces in PWCS again.  Jovi said he would release Vega from his Ego Busters contract, but only if Fitchett could win his match at the season finale on December 2nd...an Anarchy Rules match against Greg Jovi himself!  I can only assume that Jovi is going through some serious training for that grudge match, seeing as how his previous foray into competition(vs. Makaze) didn't turn out so well...

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Coca-Cola, root beer, few slices of buffalo chicken pizza(thanks Zach!), and Mello Yello.

Evan Gelistico(Submission Squad) vs. "Dirdey" Jake Dirden(Ego Busters):  Gelistico knew going into this matchup that he was the underdog against the towering monster...but that didn't meant he was going to simply lay down.  He put up a great fight against the big man, using just about every trick in the book in an attempt to gain an advantage...but Dirden was just too much for him.  Dirden delivered several crushing headbutts in a row and the official stopped the bout in 12:02, declaring Evan knocked out and unable to continue.  (Blacklist 7-5, Ego Busters 6-5, Submission Squad 5-6, Resurgence 5-7)

Reilly MaGuire vs. Roy "The Strangler" Lewis:  This was a free agent showcase and it felt like they were essentially sent out to die, as neither was well known to Alton crowds.  Lewis worked on MaGuire's arm when he was in control, but it wasn't quite enough to tip the scales in his favor; MaGuire won with his version of the Rainmaker(windup short-arm lariat) in 9:34.

"Li'l Hollywood Hills" Everett Connors(Submission Squad) vs. Thomas Shire(Ego Busters):  At the previous Mega Ticket season finale, Evan Gelistico encouraged Connors to make a bigger impact by winning his high-profile matches...he proceeded to mostly lose those matches this year.  *shrug*  This was a good time for him to reverse his fortunes with the fate of the Season Five Championship in the balance.  Shire had a breakout year with some impressive performances, including a huge win over Kevin Lee Davidson at the SLA show in July.  Shire had the advantage in most of the tangibles, but The Submission Squad needed a big win to keep themselves in contention.  Connors was able to take the big man down with a knee clip and stayed in the fight despite the size difference...Shire overpowered him on more than one occasion, but Connors scored the important win with a modified Stone Cold Stunner in 9:58!  (Blacklist 7-5, Ego Busters 6-5, Submission Squad 6-6, Resurgence 5-7)

Paco Gonzalez(C)(Resurgence) vs. "The Monarch" Jeremy Wyatt(Submission Squad) vs. "The Millenial" Danny Adams(Blacklist) vs. "The Miracle Worker" Davey Vega(Ego Busters) for the Gateway Heritage Title:  Not only did the gold hang in the balance, but also the final fate of the season championship...with only one squad able to earn a win and the other three being tagged with losses, the outcome could have gone in any number of directions.  The title had gone from Vega to Adams to Paco earlier in the year...only the self-proclaimed "Belt Collector" had yet to hold the championship.  In a nod to Fitchett's earlier arrangement with Greg Jovi, Vega wore his Besties jacket to the ring.  It seemed like Wyatt was the only one who the fans truly hated, though Adams wasn't quite a full fan favorite.  Interestingly enough, Danny and Paco briefly joined forces in a nod to their tag team past as Alpha Class...of course, the alliance didn't last long as THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE.  The battle spilled out of the ring and Adams ran Wyatt's head into the wall, leaving a hole...the venue owner was probably wondering "why me?" at this point.  Finishers flew near the end of the bout with the other participants breaking up pins, but Wyatt was able to maneuver Paco into position for the Coronation piledriver for the win in 11:34 to win the Gateway Heritage Title!  In hindsight, it made sense for Wyatt to win the title as he would defend it at the SLA show in Overland Park, Kansas...

Final Season Five scoreboard:  Blacklist/Submission Squad 7-6, Ego Busters 6-6, Resurgence 5-8.  The Squad's three wins on the show did make the difference...The Blacklist had the commanding lead at the halfway point of the show, but it was just a matter of who would oppose them.  Going into the season finale, it would be Submission Squad(Season Four Champions) vs. Blacklist(Season One Champions) as well as Fitchett vs. Jovi.

SICW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about the Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling show on Saturday, September 29th at Fire Department Engine House #2 in Swansea, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

The Swansea Firehouse shows are always a good time; I personally appreciate the fact that it's a short car trip.  There's also slightly more elbow room than in the smaller East Carondelet Community Center, though that's more of a case of my own personal claustrophobia in such a situation.

Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus; your referees were Nick Ridenour, Jay King, & Shaft.

After the National Anthem(USA! USA! USA!), promoter Herb Simmons announced that James J. Dillon would be the special guest at the next Swansea event on November 3rd.  Sweet.  The firehouse mascot Firepup made an appearance, though he made the mistake of trying to squeeze his ginormous mascot head through the ropes to enter the ring and nearly got stuck when he tried to exit.  Whoopsie.

"The Pain Train" P.T. Beckham vs. Waco(w/ The Big Texan):  With the Multi-State Tag Team Titles about to enter circulation, it was in the best interests of the Guerrilla Warfare duo to get on the same page for title contention...while it was a one-on-one match for the night, that didn't mean that Texan wouldn't try to get involved.  Things didn't work out well for them on this night as Waco's suicide dive hit Texan by mistake, leading to Beckham scoring the win with the advanced curbstomp in 5:37.

Moondog Rover vs. "Killer" Keith Smith:  This was an interesting battle of fan favorites...of course Moondog isn't the type to know too much about the rulebook, so we saw plenty of his usual tactics like biting his opponent.  The match didn't get too far before Moondog went for his trademark bone, hitting Smith with it for the DQ in 5:44.

Billy McNeil vs. "The Canadian Boss" Trystan Brady Shadeux:  This was an interesting battle between a Midwest mainstay and one of the newer up-and-coming competitors on the SICW roster.  I freely admit my favortism as it relates to The Irish Luchador, but Shadeux had a fine showing as well...I hope to see him continue to improve and take on a wider variety of talent.  Shadeux nearly won on a few occasions, but McNeil put him away after jumping backwards off the second turnbuckle into a flying Diamond Cutter(similar to Will Ospreay's Oscutter)...that earned him the pinfall in 10:30.

"Volatile" Curtis Wylde & Wyldefyre made an appearance and Wylde, as usual, was not at a loss for words.  The fans chanting "Sippy Cup" in reference to the Bruiser Brody Memorial Battle Royal trophy seems like it's more disrespectful to the trophy than its holder.  At any rate, they took a couple of seats in the front row (including one for the trophy) for the next matchup...

"The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz & Keith Smith Jr. vs. The Professionals(Shawn Santel & Mauler McDarby):  Santel & McDarby were scheduled to be in the upcoming bout for the Multi-State Tag Team Titles...after McDarby fell short against Gary Jackson & Sean Vincent with Brady Shadeux as a substitute partner, the regular team was back together in the hopes of gaining some much-needed momentum.  Ricky couldn't resist poking fun at the Wyldes at ringside when he had the chance.  While The Professionals had the edge in team experience, Ricky had been training with Keith Jr. on a regular basis so the in-laws knew each other extremely well.  Santel & McDarby were able to isolate the less experienced Keith Jr. for several minutes, but the big man delivered an impressive jumping leg lariat before making the hot tag to Ricky Cruz.  Cue Casa En Fuego(tm)...I wonder about wrestlers who tag their beaten-down partners back into the match after only a short time, but it worked out in this case; Keith Jr. pinned McDarby after a sitout spinebuster in 9:23.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Dr. Pepper, Caramello candy bar, and Ski soda.

"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson vs. "The Mountain Man" Jake Prater:  Gary went with the blue vest for the evening...he had a tough task ahead of him against the much larger newcomer to SICW.  Trying to trade punches with the big man wasn't the best strategy...Prater is becoming known for his knife-edge chops around these parts.  Prater went to the second rope and I was expecting a Vader Bomb, but the heavyweight competitor surprised the fans with a MOONSAULT off the second rope!  That nearly earned him a massive upset, but Jackson barely got a foot on the bottom rope.  Prater went for the kill, but Jackson's experience came into play as he got his opponent in a last-ditch small package to edge out the win in 8:32!

Bobby D vs. The Big Texan:  These two had faced each other a metric asston of times with Texan usually winning, though Bobby D had come up with a few wins by DQ.  D had finally scored a pinfall win over Texan at a Swansea show last year and wanted to prove it was no fluke.  Trying to win a slugfest against the larger Texan seemed to be a fool's errand, so Bobby had to use his other skills to gain an advantage...when Texan went for a big splash off the second rope, Bobby D was able to cut him off and deliver a top-rope Frankensteiner!  One Pedigree later, Bobby D scored the three-count in 7:04.

"Ironman" Ken Kasa & "Your Canadian Hero" Sean Vincent vs. "Superstar" Steve Fender & King Christopher Hargas(w/ Travis Cook):  Curtis Wylde(still seated at ringside) attacked Kasa before the bell, attempting to get revenge for his loss at the previous East Carondelet show...promoter Herb Simmons and the officials in attendance quickly ejected both Curtis and Wyldefyre from the building.  Order was restored before too much damage was done and the match proceeded as planned...both sides had a lot of experience, but the Travis Cook Organization seemed to be the more cohesive unit.  Whatever you might think of Cook, he's managed a lot of successful tag teams...it wouldn't surprise me to see some combination under his guidance with the Multi-State Tag Team Titles down the line.  His crew managed to isolate Vincent long enough for Hargas to deliver the F-5, then Fender hit the swandive headbutt off the top rope; Hargas pinned Vincent for the win in 12:42.

Intermission numero dos~!  Not much to add here...note for wrestling show attendance, check for a working water fountain before dropping money on beverages.  Need to dial back on the soda consumption anyway, not that I've been very successful in that endeavor.

Flash Flanagan vs. Rob Kowalski, no-countout-no-DQ match for the Classic Title:  While it was Kowalski who pushed for the stipulation after a recent countout win over the champion, Flanagan's ever-present kendo stick would indicate that the environment suited the titleholder just fine.  Flanagan had plenty of experience with hardcore-style warfare from his days in Puerto Rico.  The kendo stick came into play very early along with several folding chairs...once the action spilled out of the ring, Flash put one of the chairs to good use for a Sabu-style triple-jump plancha!  More weapons were introduced, including the ring bell and a fire extinguisher...as the match progressed, Kowalski grew frustrated with his inability to put away the champion and shoved referee Jay King.  Flanagan came back with a shot from the kendo stick, then offered the weapon to Jay to deliver his own revenge shot...bwahahaha.  Flash went to the top rope and delivered a flying kendo stick shot to the head of the big man, finally putting him down for the count in 9:29!

Battle Royal:  This consisted of practically everyone on the card except the ones in the just-concluded championship match.  Gary Jackson was shockingly the first one eliminated; he had taken a beating earlier in the night and Jake Prater avenged his earlier defeat by throwing out the veteran.  Prater continued his dominance by eliminating P.T. Beckham.  Billy McNeil and Trystan Brady Shadeux tangled once again with McNeil tossing The Canadian Boss out of the ring.  Several competitors ganged up on Prater to get him out.  Steve Fender took out a major threat by eliminating Ricky Cruz.  King Christopher Hargas tossed Sean Vincent and then McNeil.  Moondog Rover was eliminated, followed by Shawn Santel and Mauler McDarby of The Professionals.  Fender and The Big Texan double-teamed Keith Smith to get him out; Keith Jr. attempted to avenge his father and ended up taking himself out of the ring along with the masked man.  Old rivals Ken Kasa and Hargas crossed paths and they ended up eliminating each other as well.  That meant the final two were the same as in the battle royal from last November in that very building:  Bobby D and Steve Fender.  Bobby D won that particular encounter and Fender(along with Travis Cook) were determined to make sure that history didn't repeat itself...Travis even gave Fender a boost from the floor to save him from elimination at one point.  As the officials confronted Cook over his actions, Fender shocked Bobby D by throwing a FIREBALL in his face, then threw him over the top rope to win in 18:25!

Pandemonium ensued as the locker room emptied to check on Bobby D...in particular, Classic Champion Flash Flanagan got into a brawl with Fender before officials and wrestlers broke it up.  Flanagan demanded to get Fender in the ring, so Travis played the situation like a fiddle and said it would ONLY happen with the title on the line.  Therefore, the match was set up for East Carondelet on October 20th!

I MADE IT THROUGH SEPTEMBER.  MY GOD.

The rest of the year looks like this:
-Saturday 11/24:  Dynamo Pro in DeSoto, MO; Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance in Lemay, MO

-Saturday 12/1:  World League Wrestling in Troy, MO
-Sunday 12/2:  Wrestling Over Everything in Centreville, IL; Pro Wrestling Championship Series in Alton, IL

-Sunday 12/16:  Pro Wrestling Force in Springfield, IL
-Saturday 12/22:  Dynamo Pro in St. Louis, MO(Concordia Turners Gym)

That's my special comment for this, the fifty-ninth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2018.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.
