Raw + This Week In Wrestling

WWE Raw

-Commentators:  Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, & John Bradshaw Layfield.
-C.M. Punk d. Seth Rollins(w/ U.S. Champion Dean Ambrose & Roman Reigns) after the Go 2 Sleep.
-Dolph Ziggler d. Curtis Axel with the Zigzag.
-Big E Langston d. Johnny Fandango(w/ Summer Rae) with the Big Ending to retain the Intercontinental Title.

-"R-Truth" Ron Killings d. Brodus Clay.  Xavier Woods did commentary and distracted Brodus by calling out the Funkadactyls to dance; R-Truth took advantage with a flying Lie Detector(Paydirt) off the second rope to win.
-Brock Lesnar & Paul Heyman returned and Heyman declared that Lesnar wanted the WWE Title...he challenged anyone to stand up to Brock and got an answer from Mark Henry.  Henry threw Lesnar over the ringside barrier, but Lesnar speared him through the barrier and then F-5ed him on the floor.
-Kaitlyn Bonin, Alicia Fox, Aksana Raudoniene, Summer Rae, & Rosa Mendes d. The Bella Twins(Brie & Nikki), The Funkadactyls(Naomi Night & Cameron Lynn), & Eva Marie; Aksana pinned Nikki after a reverse Eye Of The Hurricane(front facelock setup, then turning elbowdrop to the back of the head to drive the opponent face-first to the mat).
-Gauntlet Match:  Daniel Bryan d. Luke Harper(w/ Bray Wyatt & Erick Rowan) with the flying knee strike.  Bryan d. Rowan(w/ Wyatt & Harper) via small package.  Bryan d. Wyatt(w/ Harper & Rowan) by DQ when the family members jumped Bryan before he could get his hands on Wyatt.  After the usual beatdown, Bryan seemed to accept his fate and joined the Wyatt Family...though Bray dropped him with Sister Abigail first.  Harper & Rowan walked him up the aisle and, after a moment of indecision, Bryan finally followed Wyatt under his own power.

-After that confrontation, Bailey handed the microphone over to Tempers...there's only one championship he hasn't held in this building and that's the Young Lions' Title.  "Can I get a 'spray-men'?"  (Bailey sprays Temptation cologne in the air.)  Tempers challenged Dango Wynn(who became top contender recently) to put his title shot on the line...

-Anthony Henry, B.J. Hancock, & Joey Rhymer(w/ Miss Rachel) d. Ace Rockwell, Todd Sexton, & Seth Delay.  The match started with Steven Walters teaming with Rockwell and Delay, but B.J. injured Walters with a piledriver on the entrance ramp.  The injured Sexton came back out and was allowed to tag into the match; Delay and Rockwell had both taken beatings, leaving no one but Sexton to fight for his side.  B.J. took out Sexton's bad arm and Rhymer(who had made a blind tag) rolled up Todd for the win.
-Next week:  Billy Buck vs. Bobby Moore in a falls-count-anywhere match.

Comedy Part 508: Groundbreaking

Location:  Shameless Grounds
Emcee:  Stryker Spurlock
After:  Stryker Spurlock
Before:  Quentin Wilbert

Had been to a few Shameless Grounds showcases in the past, but this was my first time performing at the venue.  I'm working on new callbacks tags for an old joke that will make it into a good closer...it's a work in progress and it showed last night.  Other than that, I feel like I did pretty well...the show was a sendoff for Atlee Solomon as he's moving to Colorado.  I didn't perform nearly enough in 2013...by my count, only 33 sets in this calendar year.  Will things change in 2014?  Inquiring minds want to know...

WWE NXT

Host:  Renee Young.  Commentators:  Tom Phillips, Byron Saxton, & Lord Tensai.  Ring announcer:  Howard Finkel~!

Most of this episode is a best-of-2013 clipshow, but there is one exclusive matchup.

Antonio Cesaro says that he admires and respects S. William Regal...Regal even helped him get a job with WWE.  However, they both knew the day would come when they would clash in the ring and only one would be left standing.

Devin Taylor interviews NXT Women's Champion Paige Knight.  She's proud of being the titleholder but she wants more...and she plans to make history and become the WWE Women's Champion as well.  Devin wraps up that interview...and then NXT Champion Bo Dallas enters the picture to extol his own virtues.

Regal's response to Cesaro is somewhat reserved...he says he's in the "late autumn" of his career and wonders about his legacy.  He never became a World Champion but he takes the blame for that.  As for Cesaro, he admits that he's probably not the favorite, but he is ready to compete with all the "vile and venom" he has left.

Taylor interviews Sami Zayn about his best-of-three-falls match with Cesaro last summer...he's flattered by the praise for the bout, but it still bugs him that he didn't win.  As for current business:  He'll take care of Leo Kruger and then go after Bo Dallas' title again.  With the discussion of the previous match with Cesaro, Zayn gets an idea:  How about best-of-three-falls with Kruger next week?  That'll work.

S. William Regal vs. Antonio Cesaro:  Regal came to Byron's defense recently when Cesaro was abusing him for no good reason...so we have this battle of noted European grapplers.  YAY WRESTLING~!  Regal gets off the mat with a nip-up or two...the fans chime in that He's Still Got It.  Cesaro responds by busting out an old-school flying headscissors but Regal powers him off.

They go into a classic Greco-Roman knucklelock with Antonio getting the edge, but Regal bridges to avoid a pinning situation.  Regal reverses into a straitjacket hold and pulls him back across his knees...very cool.  Cesaro uses his power to escape that predicament...it's a stalemate for now and the fans note that This Is Wrestling.  Back to the knucklelock we go and Regal turns it into a CRAVATE~!  He snapmares Antonio, but Antonio bridges up and gets his own cravate...then uses brute force to power Regal over into a pin attempt!  That only gets two...they end up in the corner and it turns into a slugfest with Regal getting an advantage.  Regal begs off from the referee while back-kicking Cesaro in the corner...but that only ticks off Antonio as he clips the knee!

Cesaro works on the leg to keep Regal down...he even undoes the kneebrace to do more damage.  He hooks a leg-around-the-head version of the half-crab and lifts Regal partially off the mat in the process...Regal barely gets to the ropes.  Regal reverses another attempt at the leg into a flash rollup...for two.  Backslide...gets two.  A big forearm shot puts Cesaro on his back and Regal fires up...he throws a few European uppercuts, but Cesaro decides to show him how it's done with a barrage of his own!  Cesaro goes for the leg again...GIANT SWING~!  Antonio trash-talks him instead of going for the win...Neutralizer?  No, Regal backdrops him and drops a knee on the arm in one motion!  Regal targets the arm with pinpoint focus...the commentators note that this takes away the power game and specifically the Neutralizer.  Exploder suplex hits but Regal can't make the cover...knee trembler?  No, his own knee is bothering him too much and Cesaro stops him with a headbutt.  Antonio goes for another headbutt but Regal simply kicks him in the head to stop him...not pretty but effective!

Double-underhook suplex is blocked...Cesaro backdrops him and bridges...for two.  Regal rolls him over and goes to the legs...he nearly gets the Regal Stretch but Antonio barely reaches the ropes.  Cesaro stops him with a dropkick, then lands a double-stomp to the back of the head!  Cesaro stands over his fallen opponent...he pulls him up for the Neutralizer but Regal seems to be dead weight.  Cesaro shows signs of remorse but Regal finally shows some life...and that's enough motivation for Cesaro to hook him up for the Neutralizer and nail it.  1-2-3 and it's over.

The referees help Regal to his feet and walk him back up the aisle...but Cesaro stops them so he can offer a handshake.  The gesture is accepted...and that's a wrap.  #yaywrestling

Comedy Part 507: Surprise!guestset

Location: Valley Park Funny Bone
Emcee: Shaun Arredondo
Feature: Josh Arnold
Headliner: Andi Smith

I had just planned to check out the Sunday night show at the Valley Park Funny Bone. As it turned out, I was asked about doing a guest set, so it was a good thing I had some of my comedy notes with me. I didn't keep track of my time but I think it was about 7-8 minutes. I felt like I did really well though I didn't finish as strongly as I would have liked. I don't have one definite "closer" right now and I had used all my usual closers earlier in the set. One of my newest jokes got some good laughs, so that was cool to hear.

All in all, a good comedy night...I definitely want to get to the Valley Park Funny Bone's open-mic in the future. The drive is about the same as Westport and it sounds like I'd have a better shot at making the list. I am performing next Saturday evening at the monthly showcase at Shameless Grounds...hope to see you there!

Weekend wrestling

WWE Superstars

-Commentators:  Tom Phillips & Alex Riley.
-Summer Rae d. Kaitlyn Bonin via rollup after Kaitlyn missed a spear and hit the turnbuckles.
-"R-Truth" Ron Killings & Xavier Woods d. Drew McIntyre & Jinder Mahal when Woods pinned Mahal after the Lost In The Woods(Eat-The-Feet).

ROH TV

-Commentator:  Kevin Kelly.
-The show was a highlight package of Heavyweight Champion Adam Cole's Ring Of Honor career.

SICW Wrestling Explosion #151

-Commentator:  Larry Matysik.
-The Christmas special edition of the show featured Larry and promoter Herb Simmons interviewing Ron Powers, Gary Jackson, manager Travis Cook, and Commissioner Keith Smith.
-They also ran a highlight video that included previously unseen footage from the GCS Stadium show(including Travis Cook getting his head shaved!) as well as the December SICW show.  Apparently Baron Von Raschke is sometimes mistaken for George Clooney...bwahahaha.
-Note:  SICW will be debuting in Caseyville in 2014.

Anarchy Wrestling TV #412

-Commentators:  Bret Wolverton & Jonathan Feldner(we're told Andrew Pendleton III was fired for his excessive list of contract demands).
-Hammer Roberts & Adam James d. Dustin & Christian Tarr; Roberts hit a low blow on Dustin behind the referee's back and got the win after a Meltdown(pumphandle powerslam).
-Young Lions' Champion Kevin Blue d. Steven Walters in a non-title match; Walters got a near-fall after a running Gory Bomb and went for the move again, but Blue escaped the setup and sunset-flipped him for the win.
-Bobby Moore protested his T.V. Title loss to "Wildside" Billy Buck; Buck was officially out of Anarchy so he shouldn't have been able to challenge for the title.  Representative Bill Behrens brought out Buck for the official ruling:  The title would be held up and decided in a series of three matches between the reinstated Billy Buck and Bobby Moore.  The wrestlers would decide the stipulations for each bout; Moore selected a falls-count-anywhere match for the first bout, Buck picked a bullrope match for the second.  Behrens said the third match(if necessary) would be an I Quit Match at Seasons' Beatings.  Behrens said Moore deserved another title opportunity so he granted him one...
-Mikael Judas(w/ Billy Buck) d. Bobby Moore to retain the Heavyweight Title; Buck stopped Moore from using the loaded elbowpad, leading to Judas hitting El Crucifijo for the win.
-Stryknyn d. Anthony Henry(w/ Miss Rachel) in a submission-or-surrender match.  Stryknyn got out of a chair-enhanced Texas Cloverleaf by blinding Henry with a fire extinguisher, then speared Henry before locking on the Tourniquet(Anaconda Vise) for the tapout.

TNA Impact

-Commentators:  Mike Tenay & Taz.
-Bobby Roode d. Kurt Angle in a best-of-three-falls match.  Roode won the first fall after a low blow behind the referee's back followed by the Death Valley Driver.  Angle evened it up with an Olympic Slam.  Roode got the final fall by countering an anklelock attempt into a victory roll and holding the ropes for illegal leverage.
-Feast Or Fired reveals:  Shiima Xion got the X-Division Title shot, Phil Gunner got the Heavyweight Title shot, Ethan Carter III got the Tag Team Title shot, and Chavo Guerrero Jr. got the pink slip.
-O.D.B. & Madison Rayne d. Women's Champion Gail Kim & Lei'D Tapa; Rayne pinned Gail by countering an Eat-The-Feet attempt into a backslide.
-Heavyweight Title Tournament Finals, Dixieland Match:  Brutus Magnus d. Jeff Hardy to become the new champion.  To win, a wrestler had to climb out of a steel cage, then climb the ladder on the entrance stage to retrieve the title belt.  Ethan Carter III(w/ Dixie Carter) interfered but Hardy took him out with the Twist Of Fate(after reminders throughout the show that he sold out once before).  Hardy was on the verge of winning, but Rockstar Spud pushed the ladder down...Magnus took the opportunity to climb the ladder and get the belt for the win.

Midweek wrestling

TNA XPlosion

-Commentators:  Mike Tenay & Jeremy Borash.
-Velvet Sky d. Brooke Tessmacher with the In Yo' Face(sitout Pedigree).

WWE NXT

Commentators:  Tom Phillips, Byron Saxton, & Lord Tensai.  Ring announcers:  Alexa Bliss & Howard Finkel(!)(for the main event).

Chief Operating Officer Triple H starts the show...he invites the fans to chant "NXT" instead of "Triple H".  It's the 200th episode of the show...WOO~!  He drops the names of some of the people who got started here:  Damien Sandow, Antonio Cesaro, The Shield, The Wyatt Family...and after some "Five" chants, he adds Big E Langston to that list.  He congratulations to the wrestlers and the fans who made it possible...but since no one came here to see him talk(HA!), let's get to the action...ARE YOU READY?

Tyson Kidd & Sami Zayn vs. Antonio Cesaro & Leo Kruger:  Feuds all around in this one.  The fans chant "OLE~!"(obviously fans of Los Matadores), then go into dueling "We The People"/"Sami Zayn" chants after that...so of course Kidd and Kruger start.  YAY WRESTLING~!  Zayn tags in, Leo tags out...cue "Match Of The Year" and "This Is Awesome" chants before Zayn and Cesaro even make contact!  The two have a spirited exchange before Kidd re-enters with a slingshot rolling prawn cradle(for two)...but Cesaro catches him in mid-leapfrog for a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker!

Kidd fights his way out of the heel corner but Leo plants him with a major spinebuster...for two.  Antonio tags in and hits the deadlift gutwrench suplex...for two.  The fans want Sami but he'll need to get a tag first...Cesaro boots Zayn off the apron in response.  Kidd finally fires back and low-bridges Kruger out of the ring, then avoids a Cesaro charge...and finally fends off Kruger long enough to tag in Zayn!  The house is on fire and he cleans house, hitting a Steamboat Press...for two.  Leo raises a knee to stop the corner boot but runs into a Blue Thunder Bomb...Antonio saves.  Cesaro tries to get rid of Kidd only to end up on the floor himself...then Kidd follows up with a Homicide-style rolling suicide dive!  The legal men are left in the ring...and the CORNER BOOT hits to give Zayn the win over Kruger!

Backstage:  Natalya Neidhart is watching her husband Tyson Kidd's match on the monitor...Emma Tayla dances her way into the picture and annoys Nattie a bit.  Emma gets the same impression that Paige did a few weeks ago; she feels like Nattie's a bit less social since she "got famous"(WATCH TOTAL DIVAS SUNDAY NIGHTS ON E!).  Natalya jokes about how Emma became number-one contender through a dance contest rather than a wrestling match...this all sets up a match to determine Paige's next challenger.

Flashback to February 23, 2010 and the first episode of NXT...some dork named Daniel Bryan debuted against then-World Champion Chris Jericho.  Whatever happened to that guy?

NXT Women's Champion Paige Knight vs. Summer Rae(w/ Sasha Banks)(non-title):  I believe it was a match with Paige that sparked Sasha's heel turn.  Paige goes right after Sasha and yanks her around by the hair...Sasha fires up with a series of rapid-fire chops.  A brief distraction by Summer allows Sasha to snap Paige's neck off the top rope, then stomp her down in the corner.  Sasha grabs a sleeper to wear her down...Paige fights out but Sasha slaps her.  Sasha goes for her ropewalk armdrag but Paige blocks it and Sasha hits the mat hard...I smell a comeback!  Paige hits a series of short-arm clotheslines and then a dropkick, but Summer trips her behind the referee's back.  Sasha runs in with a boot but misses, hitting Summer by mistake...KICK WHAM PAIGE TURNER and that's the ballgame!

Backstage:  Enzo Amore(in a wheelchair) chats with Colin Cassady about his injury...they hear Aiden English warming up his singing voice and pay him a visit.  Words are exchanged as I note the brand-new "SAWFT" T-shirts...outstanding.  Enzo says Big Cass has great pipes as well...sounds like a singing contest to me.

Flashback to the debut at Full Sail University(June 20, 2012):  Bo Dallas made his debut and Tyson Kidd won the main event against Michael McGillicutty(whatever happened to THAT guy?).

NXT Tag Team Champions The Ascension(Konnor O'Brian & Rick Viktor) vs. The American Pitbulls(Derek Billington & Jon Cahill)(non-title):  This is the answer to an open challenge...I don't know, those Pitbulls look more like Wolves to me.  Tensai relates his experience with the two in Japan:  "These two can go".  Viktor starts with Davey Richards...okay, the commentators say he's Billington so Eddie Edwards is Cahill.  (Davey was inspired by Dynamite Kid, whose real name is Tom Billington...I see what they did there.)  The Pitbulls work together for a double Japanese armdrag on Konnor and Cahill lowbridges Viktor out, but Konnor drops Billington with a Flapjack.  Billington tries to flip out of a back suplex attempt by Viktor but nearly lands on his head...ouch.  Billington whiffs on one enzuigiri but hits the second, finally making the tag to Cahill...the house is on fire!  Cahill nails a Shining Wizard on Viktor but Konnor saves...then gets low-bridged out of the ring.  Viktor gets backdropped out to join him...and the Pitbulls hit stereo suicide dives!  Cahill throws Viktor in for a two-count...tag to Billington for a swandive headbutt and another near-fall.  Viktor mows him down with a flying boot to halt that momentum...tag to Konnor, Viktor bashes Cahill off the apron, Fall Of Man(legsweep/flying European uppercut), Konnor pins Billington for the win.

Quite the debut appearance for our intrepid would-be challengers...but Hunico & Donny Camacho show up to stake their claim to another title shot.  Cahill tries for some post-match retribution only to get double-hiptossed into a double powerbomb, then he takes the Fall Of Man as well.

Backstage:  Devin Taylor interviews Kofi Kingston, but he's interrupted by Lana Perry.  Lana issues a challenge in notEnglish on behalf of Alexander Rusev...next week is looking pretty stacked to me.

Speaking of which, next week's main event:  S. William Regal vs. Antonio Cesaro!

Bo Dallas vs. Adrian Neville for the NXT Title, lumberjack match:  Bo retained his title on a countout loss two weeks ago, so we have this match to keep both men in the ring.  Hey, Howard Finkel!  I don't recognize the lumberjacks besides Tyler Breeze.  Bo tries to bail early, gets tossed back in the ring, and Adrian gets a bridging O'Connor Roll for a close early near-fall.  Dallas throws Neville to the floor and Breeze teases a cheapshot, so he gets slapped...NOT THE FACE~!

Flashback to 8/29/12:  Seth Rollins beat Jinder Mahal to become the first NXT Champion.  Name the guys in the victory celebration that aren't around any more!

Anywho, back to our main event...Adrian unleashes the educated feet but gets thrown through the ropes.  The lumberjacks do their job as advertised...meanwhile, Breeze is still seething over the slap from earlier.  Bo hooks a CRAVATE~! and the fans creatively chant "BO-ring"...then "Drop The Title".  Bo wipes out Neville with a huge short-arm clothesline...for two.  The turnbuckle-walk BO-dog is blocked...Neville with kicks, flying forearms, and a basement dropkick for two.  Spear setup is stopped by a dropkick, then Adrian follows up with an enzuigiri and standing shooting star press...for two!  Fans:  "We Will Riot"...no, you won't.  Neville slams Bo and goes up for the Red Arrow(corkscrew shooting star press) only for Bo to roll out to the floor.  The lumberjacks stop him from taking a powder and Neville takes out everyone with a somersault plancha!  Neville throws Bo back in the ring and sets up his finisher again...but Breeze pulls Dallas out of the way!  Bo quickly covers Neville and gets the pin just like that...Bo Dallas is still your NXT Champion!

Bo celebrates, it's Neville's turn to seethe, and Breeze checks his face with the camera phone as we wrap up episode #200...

WWE Main Event

-Commentators:  Josh Mathews & Alex Riley.
-Santa Foley made an appearance to start the show, but Ryback & Curtis Axel tried to bully their way into some early presents.  That led to Mike Mizanin leaving the broadcast table to defend the holidays.
-"R-Truth" Ron Killings & Xavier Woods d. Drew McIntyre & Jinder Mahal when R-Truth pinned Drew after the Lie Detector(Paydirt).
-Women's Champion A.J. Lee(w/ Tamina Snuka) d. Kaitlyn Bonin(non-title) with the Black Widow.
-Mike Mizanin(w/ Santa Foley) d. Curtis Axel(w/ Ryback) with the Skull-Crushing Finale as "Santa" held off Ryback with the, ahem, "Mandible Claus"(using a Christmas stocking instead of the usual Mr. Socko).

WWE Raw

-Commentators:  Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, & John Bradshaw Layfield.
-The Big Show & Rey Misterio Jr. d. Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes & Goldust(non-title); Show PUNCHed out Goldust and Rey got the pin after splashing Goldust from Show's shoulders.  The other fan-vote choices for Cody & Goldust's opponents were The Real Americans and Ryback & Curtis Axel.
-Dolph Ziggler d. Johnny Fandango(w/ Summer Rae) via rollup.
-Mark Henry & Intercontinental Champion Big E Langston d. The Real Americans(Antonio Cesaro & Jack Swagger)(w/ Zeb Colter) when Langston pinned Cesaro after the Big Ending.
-Ryback & Curtis Axel d. Tons Of Funk(Brodus Clay & Lord Tensai)(w/ Funkadactyls); "R-Truth" Ron Killings & Xavier Woods did commentary.  Brodus refused to tag in, leaving Tensai to get Shellshocked by Ryback for the win.  Brodus turned on Tensai afterwards with two big splashes and teased a splash off the second rope before Truth and Woods ran him off...then Truth & Woods invited the Funkadactyls into the ring for a dance.
-The Shield(U.S. Champion Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns, & Seth Rollins) d. C.M. Punk & Jimmy & Jey Uso; Punk hit the Go 2 Sleep on Ambrose, but Reigns had made a blind tag and speared Punk for the win.  The other fan-vote choices for Punk's partners were The Prime Time Players(Titus O'Neil & Darren Young) and Los Matadores(Fernando & Diego).
-Women's Champion A.J. Lee, Tamina Snuka, & Alicia Fox d. Natalya Neidhart & The Bella Twins(Brie & Nikki); Tamina broke up Nikki's torture-rack drop on A.J. with a superkick and A.J. pinned Nikki after a Shining Wizard.
-Daniel Bryan d. WWE Champion Randy Orton(non-title) by DQ after a blatant low blow by Orton.  John Cena came out to run him off, but as Cena checked on Bryan, Randy slid back in the ring to hit him with the RKO.

SICW Special Comment

Hey yo. Some of you may be new here. My name is Patrick Brandmeyer. I've been a wrestling fan for about 22 1/2 years and have followed the St. Louis independent scene for about 13 years. I worked in radio and now work in data entry. I do standup comedy open-mics(though not as frequently as I once did). I don't get out much otherwise.

I'll just leave this link here:
http://missouriwrestlingrevival.wordpress.com/2013/12/13/mwr-person-of-the-month-patrick-brandmeyer/

Appreciate the acknowledgement from MWR...Brian Kelley and Dubray Tallman do a lot of great work for the website and travel WAY more than I ever did. They go as far west as Kansas City for Metro Pro, as far east as Springfield IL for New Midwest, and as far north as Des Moines, IA for 3XW.

The props should go to the people on the local wrestling scene...they put on a product that deserves more attention that it tends to get. A lot of the big work is done by the people behind the scenes and they deserve a lot of credit as well. I'll try to list some names though I'm sure I'll miss a few: Pierre Abernathy at St. Louis Anarchy, Evil Jim and Crystal at Dynamo, Herb Simmons and Larry Matysik at SICW, Tony Casta and Tim Miller at MMWA, Charles Wilcox at CSCW(don't think I've officially met him yet), "Mr. K" Dereck Krebs at MECW, and Mike Gordon at FIST Combat.

I mentioned the referees in one of my Special Comments last week and they're another understated part of the wrestling product. Jim Harris had his final shows with both MMWA and SICW this month after many years of officiating...he had the distinction of refereeing Randy Orton's pro debut at South Broadway. Other men in stripes include Jay King, Eric Davis, Luke Roberts, and Michael Crase(KNEW I forgot a name last week).

Though the podcast is on a slight hiatus, I'll throw in a mention for Ringsyders as well. It was started by Mike Gordon on Party Animal Radio and eventually became the podcast of the MWR website with co-hosts Ben Simon and Drew Abbenhaus manning the show. Hope to hear them back on the internets in the near future.

My whiny blog archives go back to 2004 on Livejournal if you want to step into the wayback machine. You can also punch the URL of my old photo page into archive.org if you want to see some of my previous photography: http://www.tnaw.com/

Anywho, I've got one more show to cover before I call it a year for 2013...so let's get to it.

-----

Your ring announcer was Ben Simon and he handed it over to promoter Herb Simmons to start the show. Herb acknowledged Jim Harris' retirement and presented him with an award for his years of service. Even Herb was joking about how wrestling retirements don't tend to stick...Jim officiated a few matches on his (real) last night in the stripes.

I noticed that SICW was using a different ring than usual. They had been using Dynamo's ring for a while after MMWA stopped letting them use their ring, so I guess they finally got their own ring to use.

There were a few card changes due to a combination of injuries and travel issues. Absent from the released lineup: Bull Bronson, Heath Hatton, and Tony Raze. The original lineup had Bronson vs. Ricky Cruz, Raze vs. Big Jim Hoffarth, Hatton teaming with Chaz Wesson and Bobby D against Alexandre Rudolph/Ax Allwardt/Joker, and Dave Vaughn vs. Daniel Eads. As a result: Hoffarth faced Max Archer. Eads took Hatton's spot in the six-man tag and Jake Parnell faced Vaughn. The debuting Frank Wyatt took Rudolph's spot in the six-man as Rudolph answered Ricky's open challenge later in the night.

Jake Parnell vs. Dave Vaughn(w/ Travis Cook): Cook passed on his usual intro as he was upset about being stuck in the opener...he placed the blame squarely on Vaughn for "not getting the job done" against Jake Dirden at the November show. Uh-oh, trouble in paradise? Good competitive matchup...Parnell seems to only be using the "Gentleman" gimmick when he works heel. Vaughn won with the spear, then added a double-underhook DDT after the bell. Cook wanted a post-match high-five but Vaughn walked away from him...hmm.

Big Jim Hoffarth(w/ Waco) vs. Max Archer: It's turned into a monthly mantra at SICW: Poor Max Archer. He's been MMWA Jr. Heavyweight Champion and FTW No Limits Champion; he's also lost a feud with ring announcer Jeff Vernetti. Hoffarth won in fairly short order...he motioned to help Archer up from the mat, then the tension between the Guerrilla Warfare teammates finally came to a head as Waco snapped on Hoffarth. Hoffarth shrugged off the assault and Waco retreated from the ring...but not for long as he was in the next match.

Gary Jackson vs. Waco: This was set up as Waco trying to avenge the loss of his partner's mask. Waco played hide-the-chain for a little while and got in a few cheapshots. The ending was a bit abrupt as Waco took one last swing with the chain and got backdropped...at which point the referee saw the weapon and called for the bell. It's not often that Gary doesn't get to enlighten us on THE RULES~!

Herb interviewed Hillbilly Jim...he's a big guy and looks different without the overalls and hat. It's a cliche in wrestling but it's true: You don't always grasp the size of the bigger wrestlers unless you see them in person. I wasn't aware of a lot of his non-WWF career(he used to compete as biker "Harley Davidson"). He appeared at WrestleMania III in an infamous six-man tag match with King Kong Bundy and four midgets; he was also on the Mega Powers' team at the 1988 Survivor Series. Most of his in-ring career was before my regular viewing time, but I saw him as the manager of Henry & Phineas Godwinn in the mid-'90s. I wasn't aware that he had a show on Sirius Satellite Radio: "Moonshine Matinee".

The first intermission went fairly long as Jim was signing autographs and taking pictures with the fans; Santa Claus also made an appearance to give out candy to the kids. Santa must be booked solid at wrestling shows in December...heh.

Chaz Wesson, Daniel Eads, & Bobby D vs. Ax Allwardt, Frank Wyatt, & Joker: It says something when Ax is the "small" guy on his team. This was fine for what it was...honestly don't remember much about it.

Commissioner Keith Smith did an interview with Jordynne Grace...it's been a while since SICW has had women's wrestling and we don't see it often enough at any promotion in this area. The fans didn't really know who Jordynne was...to be fair, she IS fairly new. She got started in Texas before moving to the St. Louis area along with some other guys from the ACW crew. It's always good to see Lucy Mendez(Jordynne's scheduled opponent for January). Had a minor wish list for the near year and "more women's wrestling" was one of the items...so yay.

Ron Powers vs. Flash Flanagan: At first, it looked like the referee was going to let these guys fight it out. However, things got out of hand when Jim Harris was knocked out of the ring...then Jay King entered the ropes only to get booted down by Powers. This feud...MUST CONTINUE~! They teased either a special ref or a cage for the rematch in January...it's been a while, but SICW has done cage matches in the past. Wonder if that's a possibility in the near future...

Ken Kasa(w/ Travis Cook & Dave Vaughn) vs. Jake Dirden for the Classic Title: Dirden's been pushed strong since returning from Japan...he won the second FIST Combat tournament, captured the Dynamo Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Title from Dan Walsh, and has been on a winning streak in SICW. There's a lot of Bruiser/King Kong Brody influence around these parts with former Brody protege Powers, Dirden, and Alexandre Rudolph around. It looked like they were going into the endgame early, but then Dirden accidentally punched the ringpost and Kasa targeted the arm and hand. Dirden nearly realized the dream of DOUBLE GOLD~! but it was not to be...really liked the finish with Kasa turning the Asiatic Spike into a pin combo for the win.

Ricky Cruz vs. Alexandre Rudolph: These two have fought a few times before...I imagine the Bronson match will simply be pushed back to January, but who knows. This was fairly quick compared to the other feature bouts but it was a good matchup. At one point Ricky hit Rudolph with a spinebuster, then told referee Jim Harris to make the cover while he made a three-count...heh. Of course, the match continued from there...Rudolph was bloodied from the finishing superkick into the chair.

January is already looking busy:

Saturday 1/4: DPW in Fenton, MO(Stratford Inn)
Friday 1/10: SLA in Alton, IL
Saturday 1/11: MMWA in St. Louis, MO
Saturday 1/18: SICW in East Carondelet, IL

On top of that, CSCW makes its Missouri debut on Saturday 1/11 in St. Robert.

Have a great holiday season...and as always: #yaywrestling

-Gary Jackson d. The Big Texan in a career-vs.-mask match.  Waco came out to ringside during the bout and attempted to interfere after referee Jim Harris was knocked down. However, his attempted loaded-mask headbutt from the top rope hit Texan by mistake as Gary moved out of the way.  Jackson threw Waco out of the ring and headbutted Texan to the mat, then dropped an elbow for the win as referee Harris recovered to make the three-count.  Gary had saved his career...and after much hesitation, Texan finally removed hjs mask and shook Gary's hand.

-Clips:  Todd Sexton(w/ Joey Rhymer) vs. B.J. Hancock(w/ Miss Rachel) ended in a no-contest; Rhymer was scheduled to face B.J., but he suffered an ankle injury at Fright Night and Todd offered to take his place.  Anthony Henry distracted the referee as Todd caught B.J. in the Crippler Crossface.  Rachel tried to break it up with her clipboard but Joey took it away from her...only to bash Todd with it himself.  Ladies and gentlemen, we have a heel turn!  Henry, Hancock, and Rhymer triple-teamed Sexton until Stryknyn and Steven Walters ran them off.

-Ken Kasa(w/ Travis Cook & Dave Vaughn) d. Jake Dirden to retain the Classic Title.  Kasa attempted to destroy Dirden's hand to neutralize the Asiatic Spike and the chokeslam.  Vaughn's interference backfired and Dirden finally got him in the Spike; however, Kasa kicked off the turnbuckles and flipped on top to get the pin as Dirden refused to release the hold.

NXT + Impact

WWE NXT

The Ascension(Konnor O'Brian & Rick Viktor) vs. Hunico & Donny Camacho for the NXT Tag Team Titles:  Hunico & Camacho upset the champs two weeks ago in a non-title bout, so here's their title shot.  That upper body tattoo on Hunico looks familiar for some reason.  The champions don't have the usual intimidation advantage as Camacho goes toe-to-toe with Viktor right out of the gate.  Viktor takes a beating for the first few minutes of the match as Regal and Riley snipe at each other...fun.  Viktor finally stuns Hunico with a flying knee strike and that turns the tide in favor of the titleholders.

The Ascension members keep Hunico isolated...but Hunico rolls up Viktor and then deadlifts him up into a modified powerbomb!  It's time for a race to tag...and tags are made on both sides!  Camacho rallies against Konnor but Viktor gets involved...only for Hunico to pull him out of the ring.  However, Camacho whiffs on a corner move and Konnor plants him with a full nelson slam.  Viktor pulls Hunico off the apron to prevent a tag and Konnor Flapjacks Camacho on top of that.  Tag to Viktor, Fall Of Man(legsweep/flying European uppercut combo), and Viktor pins Camacho to retain the Tag Titles.

Kassius Ohno vs. Alexander Rusev(w/ Lana Perry):  Rusev beat up Ohno two weeks ago, costing him a match to Tyler Breeze...this stemmed from Ohno beating Rusev's time in the Beat The Clock Challenge.  Ohno's bandaged up from that assault and Rusev overpowers him in short order.  Rusev drops him with a fallaway slam that turns into a Samoan Drop in midstream...well done.  Bearhuggery ensues along with a more general attack on the back...Ohno fires off a forearm smash out of the blue and gets a small package for two, then a basement dropkick for two.  Despite that flurry, Rusev mows him down as he hits the ropes...he hooks the Accolade(camel clutch) and that's all she wrote.  Referees can't convince him to release the hold but Lana calls him off.  Fare thee well, Kassius Ohno...perhaps you were the Hero NXT needed but not the one it currently deserves.

Backstage:  Bayley Rose hugs it out with Natalya Neidhart...they're got a tag match tonight.

We recap last week's incident between Antonio Cesaro and Byron Saxton...what does Mr. Regal have to say about this?  Regal simply says that if Cesaro has a problem with him, there's no need to take it out on someone else.

Natalya Neidhart & Bayley Rose vs. The Beautiful Fierce Females(Summer Rae & Sasha Banks):  Bayley's still hugging Nattie as they walk down the aisle...heh.  Bayley grabs Sasha in a sleeper right away and rams her face into the mat, then tags in Natalya for a double suplex.  Summer tags in only to get a drop-toehold from Nattie, then Bayley gets the tag and it's Summer taking a double suplex.  Sasha gets a tag and SHE runs into a drop-toehold from BAYLEY...but Sasha blocks a boot and goes nuts with multiple back slaps...ow.  The BFFs isolate Bayley, but Bayley fights off Sasha and it's HOT TAG NATTIE~!  Snap suplex, Michinoku Driver, and discus lariat set up the Sharpshooter, but Summer immediately breaks that up.  Bayley tags herself in and nails Summer, but Sasha boots her in the gut and finishes with the Union Jack neckbreaker(now called Bankrupt).  Summer is wonderfully bitchy in her victory gloating...

Backstage:  Leo Kruger's on a quest to be a Real American and his path goes through Sami Zayn.  Ta-ta...

Mojo Rawley vs. Scott Dawson(w/ Sylvester Lefort):  Presumably Mr. Rawley remains hyped.  Dawson has been compared to Arn Anderson...that's high praise at this stage of his career.  Dawson is relentless for the first few minutes, but a blind charge hits turnbuckles and Mojo makes the comeback.  Flying hip-check sets up the Earthquake buttdrop(Hyperdrive) and that'll do it!  Lefort makes Rawley another monetary offer, but it only sets up a dropkick from the blind side by Dawson.  This feud...MUST CONTINUE~!

Next week:  Bo Dallas vs. Adrian Neville in a lumberjack match for the NXT Title, plus The Ascension members have issued an open challenge...well, ANYONE could answer THAT.  Also, Chief Operating Officer Triple H makes an appearance for the 200th episode of the show.

Sami Zayn vs. Leo Kruger:  Zayn beat Kruger in Beat The Clock, so Kruger responded by attacking Zayn back.  Zayn showed up during Leo's match last week and distracted him, leading to Leo losing to Tyson Kidd.  So IT'S ON~! and the two go straight to fisticuffs!  Kruger cuts off Sami's momentum with a huge spinebuster and kicks him to the floor...the fans chant OLE~! as they're apparently fans of Los Matadores.  Kruger takes the fight to Zayn in and out of the ring, including a slam on the floor...but Zayn fires off a dropkick to get some separation.  Leo rolls out to the floor but Zayn follows him out, throwing him back in for a Steamboat Press...and a two-count.  Zayn sets up his finishing ropewalk tornado DDT, but Leo has it scouted and SWEEPS THE LEG~! causing Sami to crotch himself on the top rope!  Kruger wipes him out with the SLICE~! lariat and that's enough for the win.

Kruger decides he's not done and lines up for another Slice, but Zayn ducks it and clotheslines Leo out of the ring...then nails the no-hands somersault plancha!  Sami wails on Kruger and the referee brigade arrives to restore order...this feud MUST CONTINUE~!

-Eric Young & Joseph Park d. Bad Influence(Christopher Daniels & Frankie Kazarian).  Young resorted to punching his own partner in the head to bust him open; that set him off and he cleaned house on Daniels & Kazarian, finishing off Kazarian with the Blackhole Slam.  Young said that the reason why Joseph Park could never find his brother Abyss was because...wait for it...Joseph Park IS Abyss.
-Ethan Carter III vs. Jeremy Borash(the latest hand-picked opponent of EC3) never started as Sting interrupted the proceedings.  Sting challenged Ethan to either face him right then and there or "take a chance" for the first time in his life by entering the Feast Or Fired match...EC3 elected to enter Feast Or Fired.
-O.D.B. confronted Women's Champion Gail Kim and Lei'D Tapa during Gail's usual open challenge...the numbers caught up to her until Madison Rayne made a surprise return for the save.
-Austin Aries d. Chris Sabin(w/ Velvet Sky) with the brainbuster to win the X-Division Title.
-Feast Or Fired Match:  Briefcases were retrieved by Ethan Carter III, Shiima Xion, Chavo Guerrero Jr., & Phil Gunner.  Other participants:  Ken Anderson(who was taken out by a Bully Ray piledriver on stage before the match started), Curry Man(who walked out since he got the "fired" briefcase in a previous one of these bouts), Shawn Hernandez, James Storm, Samoa Joe, X-Division Champion Austin Aries, Chris Sabin, Norv Fernum, and Dewey Barnes.  EC3 declined to take part in a dive sequence and went for a briefcase instead.  Xion dumped Fernum and Barnes to the floor to get his case.  Hernandez assisted Chavo in getting to his briefcase.  It looked like Storm had a clear road to the final case, but his tag partner Gunner cut him off and got it instead.
