-Flash Flanagan vs. Cowboy Marc Houston ended in a no-contest; Flanagan hit a middle-rope springboard legdrop, but Curtis Wylde pulled the referee out of the ring before he could make the count (10:20).  Wylde teased joining forces with Houston to gang up on Flanagan, but turned on Houston with the Wylde Ride...however, that left him alone with Flash who dished out some retribution with his kendo stick!
-"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson & "Ironman" Ken Kasa d. "The Icon" Chris Hargas & Bubba Troll(w/ Travis Cook); Travis initially said that Hargas wouldn't wrestle and risk an injury before the Classic Title tournament final, but promoter Herb Simmons ordered him to compete or he would lose his spot in the tourney.  The four men brawled all over the building before finally making it back to the ring, but the action broke down into a free-for-all once again.  Kasa bulldogged Troll onto Hargas, then got the pin on the title tournament finalist with an Oklahoma roll (10:38)!

Comedy Part 743: Hey Guys, It's Been HOW LONG?

Location:  Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee:  Lucas Hinderliter
After:  Donna Johnson
Before:  Joe "The Animal" Lancey

Did mostly new jokes tonight and one of them segued nicely from Lucas' introduction (something about how I look like a child molestor, but only when I'm molesting children).  I hadn't been on stage in over a month and it showed...the audience in attendance wasn't too responsive to anybody, but I didn't get a whole lot at all.  Well, I need to get back into practice if I have the chance...my priorities are elsewhere at the moment.

WWE NXT

-Commentators:  Tom Phillips, Nigel McGuinness, & "Showtime" Percy Watson.
-Nikki Cross entered the ring to start the show, calling out Ruby Riot to "come out and play"...not surprisingly, Ruby wasted no time in entering the ring and the two women brawled.  Referees and security guards attempted to restore order but had trouble separating them.
-Backstage:  NXT Champion Bobby Roode was interviewed about his altercation with Hideo Itami...he called it a cowardly and unprovoked attack from a man who was unaware of how the landscape had changed in his absence.  If Itami wants a title shot, he'll have to earn it.
-Drew McIntyre d. Andrade "Cien" Almas with the flying boot (3:54).
-Backstage:  General Manager S. William Regal announced that Ruby Riot vs. Nikki Cross would take place later in the show.
-Vignette:  Roderick Strong talked about his upbringing, which was fairly rough...when your mom shoots your dad, that's not exactly a storybook family life.  He talked about concealing his emotions since he saw them as weaknesses...that hit close to home for me.  His mother has overcome her past issues and supports him in his career.  He was mentored by Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart at a young age and was encouraged to stick with the wrestling thing.
-Aleister Black d. Kona Reeves with the Black Mass(spinning kick) (1:18).
-Backstage:  Ruby Riot was interviewed about her feud and upcoming match with Nikki Cross.  She said she would put the issue to rest tonight on her way to the NXT Women's Title.
-Backstage:  Almas was interviewed on his way out of the building, but he was occupied with the ladies escorting him to his vehicle...
-Ruby Riot vs. Nikki Cross never officially started as Cross attacked Riot from behind, re-igniting their previous brawl.  Referees and security guards had to separate the two once again...but they were as effective as before as Ruby dove off the entrance stage onto Nikki!
-Backstage:  Regal met with NXT Women's Champion Asuka Urai, announcing that a women's battle royal would take place on next week's show to determine her next challenger.  Asuka seemed unimpressed.
-Tyler Bate d. "The Extraordinary Gentleman" Jack Gallagher with the Tylerdriver '97(tigerdriver) to retain the United Kingdom Title (10:11 aired).  "The Bruiserweight" Pete Dunne, Mark Andrews, Wolfgang Young, & Trent Seven were seated in the front row for the match.

-Cruiserweight Champion "The King Of The Cruiserweights" Adrian Neville d. "The Extraordinary Gentleman" Jack Gallagher with the Rings Of Saturn(non-title) (10:51).  Neville attacked Gallagher after the match, prompting Austin Aries to run out for the save and fight with Neville.

-Superstar Steve Fender(w/ Travis Cook) d. Bobby D after a swandive headbutt.

SICW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about last Saturday's Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling show at the Community Center in East Carondelet, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

With Saturday night open, I made my way to East Carondelet for SICW's monthly offering.  The semifinals of the Classic Title tournament were up in the air as Cowboy Marc Houston had interfered in the Flash Flanagan vs. Curtis Wylde quarterfinal to cause a no-contest.  The other semifinal would take place on this night with Ken Kasa(having beaten Superstar Steve Fender and Dave Vaughn) squaring off with old friend and rival Chris Hargas(who had defeated The Big Texan and Gary Jackson to reach this point).  For his part, Houston would be in a battle of super heavyweights with Bubba Troll.

The attendance was pretty good, though not a packed house as with some of their bigger shows.  I could see people saving themselves for the big show in May; that one will probably be loaded.

Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus; your referees were Shaft, Jay King, and Nick Ridenour.

The show actually started about ten minutes before 8:00 with the announcements from Drew and promoter Herb Simmons.  They announced a ten-bell salute for a longtime fan who had recently passed away.  Sean Vincent came out to push a new SICW promotion where the wrestlers would visit hospitalized children.  Herb pushed the big May show as the anniversary at Wrestling At The Chase...on top of Barbara Goodish and Charlie Thesz(widows of Bruiser Brody and Lou Thesz, respectively), Brody's old rival Abdullah The Butcher would be in the house as well!

Steve Davis of "Memories Of Elvis" sang the National Anthem, then it was tournament update time.  Herb said that Flanagan was not in attendance(said to be injured in March) and the semifinal would take place as a triple threat match in May:  Flanagan vs. Wylde vs. Houston.  The finals would take place at the end of the night with the winner of the three-way facing the winner of tonight's Kasa-Hargas match.  (I assume Flanagan's absence was the reason for this little do-si-do.)  We were told that he would be at the Millstadt event, at any rate.  Herb also teased a special guest referee for the tourney finals.  Larry Matysik once again did television commentary for a few early matches...last month was his first live ringside commentary in many years.

Bubba Troll vs. Cowboy Marc Houston:  So who was the fan favorite in THIS one?  They started brawling right out of the gate, so it was a good thing that I didn't expect a technical classic in the first place.  Before things could even get going, Curtis Wylde attacked Houston from behind and caused a no-contest in 2:15...this was presumably revenge for Houston's interference in Wylde's match the previous month.  Wylde retreated after getting his proverbial pound of flesh, leaving both match participants in a bad mood.

Flaming Freddie Fury vs. Johnny Blade(w/ Big Daddy):  Blade defeated Fury's close personal friend Purple Passion in March; Fury brought Passion's mask with him and hung it on the ringpost for inspiration.  Other than Fury's usual schtick, Blade controlled the majority of the matchup and won with the figure-four leglock in 6:48.

"Your Canadian Hero" Sean Vincent & Moondog Rover vs. "Volatile" Curtis Wylde & "The Unstable" Dave Vaughn(w/ Wyldefyre):  Moondog presented Wyldefyre with candy before the match, but Wylde knocked the box out of her hands...aww.  The referee had to scramble to clear the chocolates off the wrestling mat before any of them got squashed.  Vincent's history with both opponents is well-documented.  Wyldefyre attempted to interfere in the match but Curtis accidentally elbowed her off the ring apron.  Curtis didn't seem to care too much about the well-being of his #1 Ginger at that moment...in the meantime, Vincent cleared the ring and pinned Vaughn after the Death Valley Driver in 13:45.  For the second time, Moondog carried Wyldefyre away from ringside...that left Wylde frantically searching for her, but he still had time to speak to Drew at ringside about his Classic Title tournament chances.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Pepsi, cheeseburger, Coca-Cola, and a freebie cheeseburger at the end of the night.  Woo.

"Big Country" Clint Poe & "The Enforcer" Jimmy D vs. Guerrilla Warfare(The Big Texan & Waco):  Former MMWA Tag Team Champions Texan & Waco reunited in March but lost to the team of Poe and Sean Vincent.  I haven't seen a whole lot of Poe thus far but he seems decent; he regularly competes in Indiana and Ohio where he occasionally teams with Marc Houston.  Unfortunately, the more experienced tandem was able to keep him out of this match for the most part.  Jimmy D was in the ring for most of the match...even after Poe got a hot tag and cleaned house, he quickly re-entered the ring for a Rocket Launcher with Poe.  I didn't see a tag, but D took the fall not long after that...Waco pinned him in 11:23 after he and Texan hit a sideslam/top-rope elbowdrop combo.

Heath Hatton vs. Ax Allwardt:  This was a surprise return for former Classic Champion Hatton, who had been primarily focusing on his home promotion of Stride Pro Wrestling in Marion, Illinois.  Despite being a fan favorite in recent months, Ax wasn't going to beat out Hatton in popularity and reverted to his more aggressive attitude.  These two know each other VERY well and have faced each other often, dating back to All American Pro Wrestling and continuing through Pro Wrestling Collision, SICW, and Stride Pro.  Ax focused on the arm after Hatton hit the ringpost shoulder-first; he nearly got the win after a mule kick and piledriver(he can now use it here since Ron Powers retired) but Hatton rolled out of the ring to escape defeat.  When Ax finally brought him back into the ring for a pin attempt, Heath got a foot on the bottom rope.  Hatton was able to rally and trap Ax in the Crippler Crossface(that's how he beat Ken Kasa for the Classic Title!), but the time limit expired in 15:00 (give or take a few seconds, going by my stopwatch...but I defer to the announced time).

Bobby D vs. Superstar Steve Fender(w/ Travis Cook):  Travis has scored a formidable acquisition, bringing his New Breed Wrestling protege to his stable in SICW.  This was a good solid matchup with Bobby D putting up some resistance, but Fender finally got him down for good and delivered a swandive headbutt to win in 5:18.  (It was especially impressive when you consider the low ceiling and the fact that D was over halfway across the ring!)

Intermission numero dos~!  This led into Herb's official announcement of the special guest referee for the tournament final, and it turned out to be a true surprise:  "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz!  The former Classic Champion was making his first official appearance at a wrestling show since his retirement; it was especially notable since he didn't seem to part with SICW on the best of terms.  He promised to call the match down the middle, despite his prior history with most of the remaining tournament participants.  It was also announced that the tourney final would be best-of-three-falls with a sixty-minute time limit for full OLDSCHOOL~! points.

"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson vs. Jayson Khaos:  Jackson delivered THE RULES~! before the opening bell, which is usually a bad sign for him(a la Kane's pyro).  Khaos had posted on Facebook about his excitement going into the match, as Jackson was his mentor early in his career.  Unfortunately, the match was derailed by an early groin injury to Khaos, leaving him to stall and retreat for most of it.  Khaos resorted to underhanded tactics like manhandling the official and delivering an unseen low blow.  The bout ended with Khaos trapping Jackson in a sleeperhold while both were in the ropes, drawing a DQ in 6:34 when Khaos refused to release the hold at the five-count (despite Drew accidentally announcing it as a countout).  Jackson vowed to get revenge on Khaos...hopefully Khaos will be able to bounce back from his injury for an eventual rematch.

"Ironman" Ken Kasa vs. "The Icon" Chris Hargas(w/ Travis Cook), Classic Title Tournament Semifinal:  I was just waiting for Travis to proclaim Hargas to be a born-again Syrian, but nope.  Despite the hand-to-ringpost spot that ended the March show, the injury focus was on Kasa's ribs after Dave Vaughn's previous spear on the edge of the ring.  They did a slow build since they were going for a long match, but the crowd was somewhat partisan in favor of Hargas so it made for an odd atmosphere.  Both guys delved into their submission hold arsenals to wear each other down...Hargas was able to deliver the F-5, but took too long to cover and only got a near-fall.  He got Kasa in the Sharpshooter in the middle of the ring, only for The Ironman to make his way to the ropes.  Kasa was able to hang Hargas upside-down from the turnbuckles, then deliver a Van Terminator-style dropkick from the adjacent middle turnbuckle!  However, Hargas was able to get to the ropes to escape defeat.  The fight spilled out of the ring and Kasa kicked away an approaching Travis Cook, but the momentary loss of focus was costly as Hargas delivered a modified F-5 into the ring steps!  Hargas dragged Kasa back into the ring and delivered one last F-5 for the hard-fought win in 22:06!

Hargas had cemented his place in the tournament finals and would be the fresh man at the end of the night...whoever his opponent would be(Flanagan, Wylde, or Houston), he would have already competed in the triple threat semifinal earlier in the evening.  Travis was even more vocal than usual, claiming Herb had rigged the game with Cruz as the referee...but we'll see how things play out in May.

Sadly, this weekend will be wrestling-free for me as I've had to work on Friday and Saturday nights and am also scheduled to work on Sunday evening.  That meant skipping the Cape Championship Wrestling doubleheader and I'll also miss the National Wrasslin' League event on Sunday night.  My job situation has been a work in progress as I will start training on Monday to work for American Income Life Insurance...I don't know if salesmanship is my thing, but I guess I'm ging to find out.  I would like to get to a point where my evenings aren't taken up by my job, so I'm hoping for the best.

Next Friday, WWE's NXT brand has its first St. Louis-area house show at the Family Arena in St. Charles, Missouri.  The timing was unfortunate as the post-WrestleMania callups meant that Shinsuke Nakamura(among others) would not be on the show.  Despite that, I'm looking forward to seeing a bit more of the developmental crew in action, as well as competitors from the cruiserweight division.  As for Saturday, SICW returns to Millstadt, Illinois and I should be able to make it to that show.

That's my special comment for this, the fifteenth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2017.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

NWL Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Sunday's National Wrasslin' League show at the Casa Loma Ballroom in St. Louis, Missouri.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

NWL had a solid turnout for their Sunday show, though I'm sure they would have liked more fans in attendance for their tournament final.  At any rate, the audience was enthusiastic and kept the energy level high.

Your ring announcer was Ben Simon, your referees were Sean Orleans & Michael Crase, and your ring girl was Laynie Luck.

"The Raging Bull" Maverick vs. "The Bull City Boss" Cornell Douglass(w/ Brother Castle), St. Louis Title Tournament Semifinal:  Due to Maverick not being cleared to wrestle at the previous event, the semifinal was postponed until this show.  Douglass didn't see why HE had to wrestle twice in one night, so he was able to negotiate a compromise with NWL President Major Baisden:  The tourney final would be a no-DQ match, something he felt would be in his favor.  To recap, Maverick defeated Dominick Butler and Dez Wellston to reach this point; Douglass got past Davey Gibson and Jay Lutz to reach the semifinals.  Maverick had the fans on his side, but he had to deal with Castle's presence outside the ring.  Douglass pulled out all the stops, even delivering a Cactus Jack-style elbowdrop off the ring apron.  Maverick fought back into the match and nearly won after a lariat, but Castle put his compatriot's foot on the bottom rope.  The double-teaming would finally backfire as Castle held Maverick for an attempted heart punch, but Maverick escaped his grasp and Douglass accidentally took out Castle with the lethal blow.  Maverick took advantage of the opportunity, hitting a Death Valley Driver for the victory in 14:55!

Party Crasher Spike(w/ Boulder) vs. Tommy Flagg of the Anti-Social Network(w/ August Marshall):  Flagg continued to make friends with his gift of gab, referring to a section of African-American spectators as "the entire population of East St. Louis".  Marshall got involved a few times, prompting Boulder to enter the fray and spear Marshall.  Despite the sides being evened, Flagg was able to score the victory after a modified Flatliner in 6:14.

NWL President Major Baisden made his entrance for his biweekly PowerPoint presentation.  (BUY THE SHIRT~!)  He talked up the NWL's TV deal in Kansas City and encouraged the fans to contact KPLR-11 about a television spot in the St. Louis market.  (DO EEEEET.)  Of course, an interruption had to happen and it came in the form of "The Billion-Dollar Brother" Emmett DuBois & Clayton Fox.  The duo took credit for running "Super Soul" Coco Rumble out of the NWL; he hasn't appeared since being powerbombed through a table by DuBois, causing him to miss his quarterfinal title tournament match.  DuBois wanted to talk business with Major and brought his own PowerPoint to connect with him...but Fox apparently screwed up the setup as we only saw a few templates(plus a funny slide with a picture of Fox giving the thumbs-up).  Finally, the buffoonery was interrupted by the arrival of Jack Foster...going by his entrance video, he was the one behind the "THIS IS NOT PRO WRESTLING" manifestos.  He declared the segment to be "NOT PRO WRESTLING"...DuBois went into retreat mode, leaving Fox to take the brunt of Foster's aggression.  IT'S THE BIG FOOT and a chokeslam left Fox laying in the ring...

"The Hanover Hooligan" Jay Lutz vs. "Greatness" Marcellus Gaines(w/ Drew Gold):  Lutz was a bit too inebriated in his previous encounter with Gaines, leading to a humiliating 59-second defeat.  For this rematch, he had every intention of walking into the ring sober(as the big-screen video displayed)...but SOMEONE left him a gift of booze in the backstage area.  As a result, he was in even WORSE shape than the last time, swinging wildly at Gaines and being easily dodged.  (My advice to "HIT THE ONE IN THE MIDDLE!" fell on deaf ears.)  Gaines finished with the Southpaw Shooter(knockout punch) in 1:48...so at least he lasted longer than the first match?  Post-match, Gold took credit for the liquor gift and said that Gaines didn't need it to win, but it made his night a lot easier.  This didn't seem to sit well with Gaines in the post-show interview, as he felt he was great enough to win on his own merits and warned Gold to NOT do something like that again.

The Blood Brothers(Davey Gibson & Mathew Grundy) vs. The Royal Blood(Jet & Jax Royal), I-70 Series:  Kansas City led the series 5-3 going into this match; this was a rematch from K.C. where Gibson & Grundy scored a victory.  I was wondering if the Royals would even the score, but that would widen Kansas City's lead and they were already comfortably ahead.  The fan favorite/rulebreaker dynamic was reversed from the K.C. outing, given the home-turf factor...it was a tremendous matchup, though I personally liked their first encounter better.  I'm sure they'll have plenty of future outings, of course.  Gibson got the winning fall on Jet after the brainbuster-onto-the-knee/flying knee strike combo with Grundy, narrowing the gap to 5-4 in favor of Kansas City...we'll see how things pan out on the other side of Missouri this weekend.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Two Coca-Colas.  I should stick to water for both my physical and financial health.

The Buddy System(Buddy Shepherd & Skyler Beckett) vs. The Underground(Adam Ryan & Jackie Lee Bosch):  Ryan & Bosch had attacked Buddy and Skyler a few weeks before, leading to this matchup.  The Underground continued their previous tactics by attacking their opponents on the entrance stage, then throwing Shepherd into the ringpost...that forced Beckett to fight on his own for several minutes.  Buddy was able to recover and enter the match for his side, leading to Beckett rolling up Ryan in 8:13 after escaping The Underground's back suplex/top-rope double-stomp finisher.  The Underground weren't done as they continued their attack, but "Takedown" Javy Torres made the save...Beckett had made him an offer to join The Buddy System and his actions spoke for themselves.  However, Javy showed off his new Buddy System T-shirt, confirming that he had allowed the Buddy System to come into him...all righty then.

Neon Iverson vs. Christian Adonis:  This was Iverson's first solo match in the NWL (his Soldiers partner Dez Wellston is out with an injury); he was facing a man who was intent on proving his worth without Carolina Grizelda Esmeralda Rodriguez in his corner.  Unfortunately, one would argue that Carolina was one of the main points of interest in Adonis' matches.  Despite that, they had a good dynamic; Adonis attempted to ground the high-flyer Iverson by attacking his previously-injured leg.  Iverson rallied, but his 450 Splash hit the raised knees of his opponent and Adonis hit a reverse neckbreaker to win in 5:47.

"The Raging Bull" Maverick vs. "The Five-Star Phenom" Todd Letterman, St. Louis Title Tournament Final, No-DQ Match:  Letterman defeated Skyler Beckett, Marcellus Gaines, and Mathew Grundy to reach the finals.  Major Baisden sat at ringside to observe the main event.  Ben almost forgot about the stipulation until the plunder came into play, at which point he reminded the audience about it.  The fight spilled out to the floor and continued for several minutes; I imagine the referee allowed a lot of leeway in the interest of a decisive winner.  I suspected that the fan support would be divided in this match, though it wasn't nearly as partisan as I feared; I was worried that the fans would totally side with the local guy Letterman and boo Maverick.  Maverick did his best to take out the leg after a missed corner cannonball by Letterman, then brought in chairs and a piece of the guardrail to do more damage; both were put to good use by both participants.  Letterman delivered not one but TWO spinebusters onto the railing as it was propped in the corner, then hit a third spinebuster in the middle of the ring...but only got a two-count.  Maverick powered Letterman up onto his shoulders for a Death Valley Driver(that's how he beat Douglass~!)...but that was only good for a two-count.

Letterman came back with his Endzone Spike(pumphandle Michinoku Driver) and Maverick incredibly kicked out of that pin attempt.  Out of desperation, Letterman pulled off a turnbuckle pad...but it nearly backfired on him as Maverick reversed him into the exposed metal.  Letterman was stunned, but regained his bearings in time to throw Maverick into the turnbuckle as well.  Letterman dropped Maverick with a second Endzone Spike and that was finally enough to score the win in 27:20!  Todd Letterman had become the first NWL St. Louis Champion!  Major presented the title to the winner and that closed out the show...

Now that a champion has been crowned, we will see which contenders will line up for a title shot.  Maverick has a case for a rematch as he had already competed earlier in the night.  Others who haven't faced Letterman in NWL competition will be looking for their opportunities as well:  Names that come to mind include Davey Gibson, Dez Wellston, Jay Lutz, Jack Foster, and perhaps even Kyle O'Reilly.  As always, time will tell...

Tonight, I'll make my way to the wrestling metropolis of East Carondelet, IL for Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling.  Next weekend doesn't have a lot on the table in terms of the immediate area, but Cape Championship Wrestling in Cape Girardeau, MO has a Friday-Saturday doubleheader.  Friday features the Luna Vachon Memorial Tournament with notable names such as "Blue Pants" Leva Bates and Mickie Knuckles in the brackets.  Saturday has several notable names:  Colt Cabana, Joey Ryan, and Jeff Cobb.  Will ponder whether I'll make that lengthy road trip in due time.  The weekend wraps up with the NWL's St. Louis offering on Sunday the 23rd in St. Louis.  On Saturday the 29th, SICW returns to Millstadt, IL and I may actually make it to the show...woo.

That's my special comment for this, the fourteenth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2017.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.
