MMWA Special Comment 12/8/18

Now, as promised, a special comment about the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance show on Saturday, December 8th at the South Broadway Athletic Club in St. Louis, Missouri.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

If I remember right, this show was originally supposed to include "The Little Blue Dragon" Tootie Lynn Ramsey vs. Kenny Alfonso, but the state inspector cancelled the bout due to questions about whether the Missouri State Athletic Commission allowed intergender matches.  Thankfully that issue was eventually set straight, but it meant Alfonso drove from Kansas City to St. Louis and didn't get to wrestle.  Ugh.

Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus; your referees were Jay King, Nick Ridenour, & Shaft.  Your video commentators were myself, Johnny Elias, and Jam.

The night began with a ten-bell salute for Larry Matysik.  MMWA promoter Tony Casta, Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling promoter Herb Simmons, and Gary Jackson all said a few words about their friendships with Mr. Matysik.

Bobby D vs. "Rough Cut" Rick Ruby:  I didn't expect this to be a technical classic, but Bobby D has surprised me on occasion.  Ruby's size advantage nearly paid off in his favor as he scored near-falls after a big splash and an enzuigiri(!).  Bobby D fought back and got the big man out of the ring, but Ruby avoided the incoming somersault plancha...he tried to get D back into the ring, but D was able to slingshot into a re-entry sunset flip for the pin in 9:49.

"Magnificent" Mark Morgan vs. Barackus:  Barackus was still in the mood to make a statement on his path to the Heavyweight Title...Morgan's MMWA debut didn't go very well for him as a result.  The big man finished in short order with a Blackhole Slam and sitout chokebomb 3:25.

"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson & Khayman(w/ Abigail) vs. The Professionals(Shawn Santel & Mauler McDarby):  The Gary Jackson Fashion Watch for the night:  Red jacket and Santa hat with red and yellow trunks.  In previous months, referee Shaft had made decisions in Khayman's matches that seemed to come off as biased against him but could have easily been dismissed as circumstantial.  However, this case was drastically different; Khayman went to the top rope with the intent to launch a swanton bomb onto Santel, but Shaft pulled his leg to crotch him on the top rope!  Santel took advantage of the situation to hook Khayman in a three-quarter nelson and Shaft fast-counted the pin in 9:55.  After the match, Shaft decided to formally accept Khayman's challenge for a match...and Khayman said it would be the first-ever casket match in MMWA history!  It was scheduled for the January show, but that event was cancelled due to severe winter weather so it was pushed back to February.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Pepsi, Mountain Dew, French fries.

"Your Canadian Hero" Sean Vincent vs. Waco(w/ "Volatile" Curtis Wylde & Wyldefyre):  This was scheduled to be Vincent vs. Wylde, but Wylde came out with a kneebrace and cane and claimed an injury to back out of the match.  The history between Vincent and Wylde in SICW has been well-documented and I imagine things may never be fully settled between the two, given the egos of both competitors.  Despite the change of opponent, Vincent was able to score a relatively quick win with his version of the Indian Deathlock(called the Mapleleaf Leglock) in 3:16.  Wylde attacked Vincent with his cane after the bell(showing no signs of his claimed knee injury), but Gary Jackson & Mark Morgan hit the ring to run him off.

"Da Bomb" Brian James vs. "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz for the Heavyweight Title:  Cruz had made his Midwest wrestling debut in the MMWA, but he hadn't competed at the South Broadway Athletic Club in several years.  He made his name across several promotions, holding the SICW Classic Title as well as the Dynamo Pro Wrestling Heavyweight and Tag Titles...but he had not held gold in this promotion.  It was set up to be the toughest challenge of James' title reign as the competitors seemed to be evenly matched in many respects.  However, they would not reach a decisive finish on this night...Barackus was unhappy about Cruz "jumping the line" into a title shot and attacked James, causing the champion to technically win by DQ in 12:06.  All three men fought each other until Waco ran out to assist Barackus...that unusual alliance led to James & Cruz joining forces to clear the ring.  That set up a tag match for the January show (though it would be pushed back due to that show's cancellation).

"The Caramel Bear" C.J. Shine vs. Ezra Zealous:  These two have mostly competed for Dynamo Pro in recent times, but often make their way to the MMWA as well...they're both the types to get experience wherever they can, and that seems to be a good work ethic to have.  Zealous nearly won after a forward roll into a jumping DDT, but Shine won a competitive match with the knee trembler in 10:54.

Moondog Rover vs. The Big Texan, Texas Death Cage Match:  These two have battled many times over the past several years, but this was set to be the final blowoff to their long-standing feud.  It was the first time I had ever done commentary for a cage match, so that was a personal milestone for me.  The stipulation meant that if a wrestler was pinned or made to submit, he had a ten-count to get back to his feet...if he was able to do so, there would be a thirty-second rest period before the action officially resumed.  They didn't even wait for the opening bell before brawling outside the ring and it took some time before they could get them inside the walls of the cage to start things.

Falls as I remember them(the two active officially traded off duties between falls):  Rover pinned Texan after Texan missed a top-rope splash.  Texan pinned Rover after an elbowdrop.  Rover pinned Texan after a big splash.  Texan pinned Rover with a top-rope cross-bodyblock(!).  Rover pinned Texan after an elbowdrop.  Texan pinned Rover after the big splash.  Texan pinned Rover after another elbowdrop.  By the time it was all over, both men were bloody and Texan's mask had been partially ripped.  The end saw Texan knock out Moondog with his own bone before scoring the final fall...Rover was unable to answer the ten-count and Texan was declared the winner in 31:35(!).  I felt like it was a good brawl and the fans were into it, though I felt like it might have been better in a shorter timeframe.  As always, that's just me.

Two to go and I'll be finished with 2018.  Whaaaaat.

That's my special comment for this, the seventy-eighth wrestling show I attended in the year 2018.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

WOE Special Comment 12/2/18

Now, as promised, a special comment about the Wrestling Over Everything show on Sunday, December 2nd at the River's Edge Community Center in Centreville, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

Your ring announcer was The Landlord; your referees were Jacob Carter & Michael Crase.

The night started with a ten-bell salute for Larry Matysik.

"Thoroughbred" Brayden Lee vs. "Paragon" Khris James:  This was my first time seeing either competitor.  The roles were made clear in short order as Lee won over the fans with aerial offense, taking out James with a somersault plancha.  James cut him off with a single-arm DDT as he re-entered the ring, focusing his attack on the arm to slow the pace.  Lee made a comeback, but James held onto the referee to shield him from seeing a mule kick to the Universal Weak Point(tm); James finished with a spinning uranagi after that, scoring the pin in 11:18.

Savanna Stone vs. James Brady:  These two know each other well from training, but Brady wasn't in a friendly mood as he was focused on winning.  He took the advantage after a blind charge by Savanna hit the ringpost shoulder-first, then followed up with a suicide dive before throwing Savanna into the ringside seats.  Stone came back with her own suicide dive and then a superplex, then scored a near-fall after a uranagi.  Brady stopped her with a 3.0 backbreaker and nearly won after a fireman's-carry slam, but Savanna showed her power by delivering a turnbuckle powerbomb before winning with a a standard-issue powerbomb in 9:00!

John Boi vs. Krispy 2 Pop(w/ "The Unholy Father" Richard Faith):  I missed a few WOE shows so I wasn't there for the Sabotage Squad breakup or Krispy aligning with Faith.  Faith got himself ejected from ringside in the early going, leaving the two former teammates to settle their differences.  The more experienced Krispy nearly won after a swinging neckbreaker and elbowdrop off the top rope, but it only got a two-count.  John Boi came back with a DDT but Krispy got a foot on the bottom rope to escape defeat.  Krispy went for a rana off the second rope, but John Boi countered into a huge sitout powerbomb to get the duke in 7:20.  John Boi offered to make amends after the bell, but Krispy answered with a low blow...the fight continued and John Boi brought in a chair, but Faith returned with new protege Alister Crowe for the gang beatdown.

"The Gypsy Warrior" Orion Creed vs. Brandon Espinosa:  I hadn't seen Creed in a little while as he'd been on the shelf with an injury.  Both guys have a lot of talent and were very evenly matched in this one.  Creed nearly scored the win with a Rite Of Passage-style behind-the-back piledriver but Espy just barely kicked out of the pin at 2 1/2.  Espinosa fought back into the matchup and delivered a huge Last Ride-style powerbomb...but Creed somehow reversed Espy's pin attempt into a modified sunset flip for the flash three-count in 9:33!  Hope to see more of Creed around this area in the future.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Cheese fries, Mountain Dew, Pepsi.

No Coast(Sid Holland & D.C. Shaw) vs. All Eyes On Us(Micah Pope & Nelson Sixx) for the Tag Team Titles:  Shaw was previously known as J.C.J., for those keeping track.  A.E.O.U. are regulars in central Illinois but they occasionally make their way down here.  The champs retained in a hard-fought matchup; Holland delivered a knee trembler to Sixx and Shaw got the pin after a Shining Wizard to the back of the head in 11:51.

"The Pain Train" P.T. Beckham vs. "The Canadian Boss" Trystan Brady Shadeux(w/ Hardcore Andy) for the Interstate Title:  Beckham had retained the title against Shadeux in October, but the issue was far from settled as they crossed paths once again.  Seeing Hardcore Andy as a rulebreaker just seems wrong.  Shadeux had an underhanded game plan going into the bout as he sneak-attacked Beckham with a chair during his entrance, leaving him bloody.  Despite the assault, Beckham agreed to start the match and Shadeux pressed his advantage.  P.T. nearly scored the comeback win after a slingshot spear, but Shadeux got a foot on the bottom rope to escape defeat.  The referee was knocked down and Beckham could have won after his advanced curbstomp, but there was no official to make the pin count.  Andy passed the title belt in to Shadeux and he blasted the titleholder with it...the referee recovered as Shadeux made the cover, but Beckham barely kicked out of the pin at 2 1/2.  However, that was all of the fight that was left in Beckham...Shadeux delivered a close-range superkick to seal the deal in 7:03 to crown a NEWWWWW Interstate Champion!

"2.0" Da'Marius Jones vs. "The Unholy Father" Richard Faith(w/ Krispy 2 Pop & Alister Crowe) for the Heavyweight Title:  After Faith lost the Interstate Title, he made it clear that he had bigger goals in mind and that meant the big belt in the company.  Faith had plenty of backup, but John Boi ran off Krispy to make the sides a bit more even.  Faith almost accomplished his goal after hitting the Blackhole Slam, but took too long in making the cover and Jones kicked out at 2 1/2.  Faith brought in the title belt and the referee stopped him, leading to Jones hitting the Paydirt, but Crowe pulled Jones off the cover when he went for the pin.  Jones took out Crowe, but Faith blatantly leveled Jones with the belt and got disqualified in 8:27.  Landlord(who had a tumultuous relationship with Jones at best) got a microphone and said that Jones had saved him from a beating at a previous event, so he might have thought that they were on the same side.  Instead, he simply said they were "even" and attacked Faith and Crowe with a baking pan.  Jones stood tall in the end, retaining his title...

I fully plan to get caught up on these.  It may take a while and I may consolidate my format of these commentaries, but it will happen.

That's my special comment for this, the seventy-seventh wrestling show I attended in the year 2018.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

Comedy Part 827: Troy Bound

Location:  Schmitty's Sunset Inn Again
Emcee:  Ashley Montes
After:  Ashley Montes
Before:  Joe "The Animal" Lancey

I hadn't performed in a while and it was nice to see a show on the Illinois side of the river...if this becomes a regular thing, I hope to make it up there as much as possible.  It's set up as an open-mic for the first hour and a local showcase after that...the signups for the open-mic were myself, Joe, and Ronaldo Mercado.  A Troy show is not only a lot closer to home for me, but it's closer to members of my family; shoutout to my cousin Tyler for checking out the show.  I had a really good set and got to see a bit more of the newer comics in the area...hope to be back sometime soon!
