WWE NXT

-Commentators:  Mauro Ranallo, Nigel McGuinness, & "Showtime" Percy Watson.
-Backstage:  Several wrestlers and security guards were found down and injured...General Manager S. William Regal surveyed the situation.  It was unclear who did it, but the commentators speculated that it was Adam Cole and reDRagon(Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish).
-New NXT Champion Drew McIntyre kicked off the show to celebrate his title win...he put the locker room on notice, especially Cole and reDRagon, and said that anyone who wanted a title shot was welcome to challenge him face to face.  That brought out Roderick Strong...Strong said that he had his grudge rematch with Bobby Roode later in the night, but his ultimate goal was still the NXT Championship.  Drew respected Strong's honesty, but said he would fall like the rest.
-Next week:  Injured NXT Women's Champion Asuka Urai would give an update on her future.
-Peyton Royce(w/ Billie Kay) d. Ruby Riot after Billie BOOTed Ruby on the floor, allowing Peyton to win with the Perfectplex (7:15 aired).
-Backstage:  Regal was interviewed about the chaos at the top of the show...Kassius Ohno(sporting a sweet Mitsuharu Misawa-Stan Hansen T-shirt) interrupted to ask for another match with Hideo Itami.  Regal granted his request, but Ohno upped the ante by wanting it to be no-DQ; Regal made it so.
-Heavy Machinery(Otis Dozovic & Tucker Knight) d. Damien Aweel & Edwin Negron; Dozovic pinned Negron after he and Knight hit the Compactor(assisted World's Strongest Slam) to drop Negron onto Aweel (2:14).
-Backstage:  Regal told Lars Sullivan that he had beaten up three tag team partners, so he would be in a three-on-one handicap match on next week's show.  Sullivan seem unfazed by this news.
-Roderick Strong d. "The Glorious" Bobby Roode after hitting the End Of Heartache(Falcon Arrow backbreaker) twice in a row (14:27 aired).  NXT Champion Drew McIntyre came out to stare down Strong after the match, but Drew was ambushed by Adam Cole and reDRagon; Regal and security guards arrived to restore order, but Cole and company were just leaving.
-Next week:  Kassius Ohno vs. Hideo Itami in a no-DQ match and Cezar Bononi vs. Andrade Almas.

Comedy Part 764: Hey Guys, Still Plugging Away

Location:  Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee:  Andy Hamilton
After:  Adam Hoppe
Before:  Rich Braun

Despite recent Thursday nights with decent audiences for open-mic, this week's attendance was minimal...with an audience of mostly comedians, I focused on newer material even though I'm still working on it.  I am doing a guest set at Hey Guys tomorrow night with headliner Brian Aldridge...hopefully some of you can make it to the show!

Comedy Part 763: Tuesday Night's All Right For Boning (wait, what?...)

Location: Westport Funny Bone
Emcee: Jack Schurk
After: Jack Schurk
Before: Jimmy Day

Going up early(first after the host, in this case) can mean little prep time but also little time to overthink my set and psych myself out. All things considered, I had a really good set; I’m deciding whether to break from my usual set-opening bits since I’ve done them for a long time. It's a balance between “have a good set” and “try new stuff”(which I don't have much of, currently). Next up: Open-mic at Hey Guys Comedy on Thursday...

Glory Pro Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Sunday's Glory Pro Wrestling show at the Spaulding Hall Club in Alton, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

Even without an overly notable "big name" in the house, Glory Pro packed the venue once again...it was to the point where I was having trouble finding a good vantage point to watch the show.  I almost felt claustrophobic at times...I'm not the most social person in the world, as you may know.  Despite that, it was a good time and I got to see some people who I don't see all that regularly.

Your ring announcer was Kevin Harvey; your referees were C-Lo, Brandon Tolle, and Richard White.

Xavier Walker, Logan James, & Kevin Giza vs. "The Diamond Tiger" Kobe Durst, Adam Slade, & Leone Mephisto:  Mephisto's been putting in the work to rebuilt his bridges, to his credit.  I remembered Slade from his previous Glory Pro appearance; Giza also competed at Glory Pro in the past.  I saw Walker as one half of "Super Future" at Proving Ground Pro in Taylor Springs; he's a big dude who could be a standout over time.  James was the only one I wasn't overly familiar with.  It took a great deal of effort for the rulebreaking trio to chop down the big man Walker, but it finally took its toll and Durst pinned him after a piledriver in 7:25.  Durst wasn't too pleased with being relegated to the preshow match after competing at the first Glory Pro event (he was in the inaugural Crown Of Glory Title tournament!) and let everyone know about it.

Space Monkey vs. "All Ego" Ethan Page:  The fan favorite was clear in this bout, though Page had his share of supporters.  As Space Monkey was introduced, the fans showered the ring with bananas instead of streamers...bwahahaha.  Page had the distinct size and power advantage, but Space Monkey's unorthodox style can thrown anyone off.  Page delivered a bodyslam off the top rope and swanton bomb(!) for a close near-fall...he was stunned by the kickout and Space Monkey managed to crucifix him to the mat for the flash pin in 7:42.

Eight-Man Rumble-Style Gauntlet Match:  It was tough to keep up with the action in this one and I whiffed on writing down elimination times...whoops.  Entries:  "Sensational" Stevie Fierce, "The Warhorse" Jake Parnell, "The Incredible Primal Prodigy" Matt Kenway(Look At Him After Dark), "The Stiff Robo Ginger" Gary Jay, Calvin Tankman(that's a big dude), Aaron Dzinic, "Marvelous" Matt Knicks, and Barackus(w/ Jason Saint).  No eliminations took place until most of the competitors were entered; Pride members Kenway and Dzinic united for a Codebreaker/German suplex combo, allowing Kenway to pin Fierce.  Despite the teamwork, their luck ran out as Gary Jay pinned Kenway after a lariat.  The simmering issue between Gary and Jake Parnell surfaced a few times in this battle...Parnell used his own lariat to eliminate Dzinic.  Most of the competitors hit dives to the floor, including the massive Tankman...yikes!  Barackus took out Knicks with the clawhold chokeslam.  Tankman and Barackus added a different dimension to the bout and, of course, we did get the crowd-pleasing HOSS SHOWDOWN~!  Barackus came out on top of that exchange, pinning Tankman after a Bossman Slam.  Gary and Parnell attempted to work together against the heavyweight, but couldn't stay on the same page and came to blows...Gary eliminated Parnell with the Michinoku Driver.  Gary gave Barackus a great fight to close out the match, but the size disadvantage was too much and Barackus got the final win with the Baldo Bomb in 16:24.  Cue Jason Saint's self-congratulatory post-match promo...

Tyler Matrix vs. "The Mad Dragon" Hakim Zane:  Matrix has appeared for Glory Pro a few times in the past, but I think this was his first singles match in the area.  Have seen Zane at both Glory Pro and Proving Ground.  This was another fine match in a show full of them, as you might expect...Zane got the win with the top-rope double-stomp in 10:40.

"The Lone Star" Curt Stallion vs. Fred Yehi:  Stallion's been making a lot of waves on the independent scene in recent months; he picked up his first Glory Pro win in July against Martin Stone.  I first saw Yehi in Georgia's Anarchy Wrestling as he had a classic series of bouts with Slim J; he moved on to EVOLVE and held their Tag Team Titles with "Hot Sauce" Tracy Williams as part of Catch Point.  It was a battle of fan favorites on paper, but Stallion has become a mainstay at St. Louis-area shows so the crowd support was mostly in his corner.  The match got an extra added dimension in the weeks leading up to the show:  The winner of this match would face the winner of the Paco Gonzalez-Danny Adams match at the October show with the winner of THAT match getting a title shot.  As such, Stallion had a great opportunity to work toward his championship goals while Yehi had a chance to make an impact in his Midwest debut.  Yehi has a unique style that stood out to me on this show; he definitely made a great first impression on St. Louis-area fans.  In the end, Stallion managed to finish off Yehi with the flying headbutt in 13:25!

Jeff Cobb vs. Jake Something vs. Kevin Lee Davidson:  Cobb had competed for Cape Championship Wrestling earlier this year, but this was his first appearance in the greater St. Louis area; he's become an indie standout in recent years on top of his fame in Lucha Underground as the masked Matanza Cueto.  K.L.D. has solidified himself as the rulebreaking type through his alliance with Danny Adams, though he still has his share of supporters.  Something has gained a cult following in this area; not bad for someone who had flown under the national radar until recently.  This was hyped as a HOSS FIGHT~! of epic proportions and we got several FEATS OF STRENGTH~! out of the competitors...Cobb in particular displayed impressive power as well as uncanny agility for his size.  This match would determine the next challenger to the Crown Of Glory Title at the October show...Something scored one of the biggest wins of his career as he pinned Cobb in 12:13 after the sliding lariat to the back of the head!

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Bottle of water and root beer.

"The Kentucky Gentleman" Chuck Taylor vs. Austin Theory vs. Maxwell Jacob Feinstein vs. Brandon Espinosa:  "The Dad Bod" Sean Orleans was scheduled to be in the match, but Espy attacked him in the aisleway and threatened to shave his head before wrestlers and security guards intervened.  Espinosa settled for taking Orleans' place in the scheduled bout featuring two Midwest newcomers and the reigning Pro Wrestling Guerrilla Heavyweight Champion.  Chuck Taylor has reached some career milestones in the past year that were a long time in coming, including appearances for Total Nonstop Action and Ring Of Honor.  I'm not that familiar with Theory or M.J.F.; M.J.F. came in with a lot of hype and was an entertaining character (fans threw toilet paper instead of streamers!).  Theory has a good look and has become a standout on the east coast...I'll need to do a bit more research on both of those guys.  The referee was bumped(in a four-corner match, which is essentially no-DQ by definition anyway?) and Espy delivered a low blow to M.J.F., stunning him long enough for a small package pin in 7:03.  BOO~!  Espy celebrated, but Orleans returned to the ring to attack Espinosa!  Cue pull-apart brawl...they'll (hopefully) settle their differences at the October show.  If Orleans wins, Espy loses his hair.  If Espy wins, Orleans is forced to be Espy's manager!

Paco Gonzalez vs. "The Millenial" Danny Adams, dog collar match:  I suspected that this would be a very different dog collar match than the one at SICW the previous night.  Paco was busted open in this one as they brought the violence...Kevin Harvey even warned the fans that this would NOT be a family-friendly matchup.  It was hoped that this would settle the issues between the two without any outside involvement, but K.L.D. thought otherwise...when Paco nearly had the match won, the big man ran into the ring to plant Paco with a spinebuster!   Jake Something hit the ring to run off Davidson, but the damage had been done.  Adams set up a table on the floor and teased a superplex through it(!), but Paco reversed the superplex into the ring and then set up Danny for a frog splash through the table!  Unlike the previous night's match, this match was won by pinfall or submission...Paco got some poetic justice by hanging Danny over the top rope with the chain(similar to what K.L.D. did to him in July) and that got the tapout in 15:36!

"The Miracle Worker" Davey Vega & "The Dirty Rook" Mat Fitchett^H^H^H"The Leader Of The Pack" Stephen Wolf vs. "Unbreakable" Michael Elgin & "Pretty Reckless" Everett Connors for the United Glory Tag Team Titles:  Vega came out alone and said that Fitchett wasn't cleared to compete...he'd gotten stitches from his match the previous night(in the National Wrasslin' League against The Faces Of Fear).  He introduced Wolf as his substitute partner for this title defense...Connors had won a scramble match earlier in the year for a United Glory Tag Team Title shot and chose his trainer Elgin as his partner (despite Elgin's winless record in the promotion).  Wolf more than held up his end as the sides were essentially even in tag team experience (both duos were joining forces for the first time).  Bombs were thrown, as you might expect.  There were a lot of close calls, but the last-minute change in plans for the defending team may have made the difference.  Connors scored the victory over Wolf with the torture-rack Diamond Cutter in 20:43, crowning NEWWWWW United Glory Tag Team Champions!

Post-match, Elgin expressed his regret that he didn't get to lock up with Fitchett...he also guaranteed that The Besties In The World would definitely get a title shot once Fitchett was healthy.  Works for me.

"Hot Fire" Myron Reed vs. "The Real-Life Ben Affleck" Alex Daniels for the Crown Of Glory Title:  As this was a defense for Reed against someone who WASN'T a big outside name, the chances for a title change were actually higher than usual.  Daniels had his multiple Affleck T-shirts in full effect.  Daniels came closer than Reed's previous challengers to dethroning him, but the young titleholder stayed strong and withstood his assault.  After a really good competitive matchup, Reed won with the Spanish Fly in 15:47 to retain his title!

As noted, I'm behind on my commentaries and now I've got two more shows in the books from this past weekend.  Comedy obligations meant I did not attend the National Wrasslin' League show in St. Peters, MO on Saturday, but I still hit a personal best of nine wrestling shows in one calendar month (NWL would have made it ten).  I don't know if anything local is happening next week (Labor Day weekend and all that), but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.  In the meantime, I should get some sleep or something stupid like that...

That's my special comment for this, the forty-third wrestling show I've attended in the year 2017.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

P.S. We are all marks.

Sunday PWCS Results From Alton, IL

-Gateway Heritage Champion Davey Vega and Greg Jovi started the show with Jovi gloating over the Ego Busters already clinching their spot in the season finale.  Jovi presented Vega with a brand-new title belt and prepared to throw the old St. Louis Anarchy belt in a trash can, but Vega stopped him...because he wanted to do it.  That brought out an enraged Gary Jay who ran Vega and Jovi out of the ring and retrieved the belt from the trash.

Danny took out Fitchett with the belt and the ref recovered, but Gary barely managed to kick out. Vega(who had focused on Gary’s arm and hand) managed to take Gary down and lock on a kimura for the tapout (22:12). (Ego Busters 8-1, Submission Squad 3-6)
-Final scoreboard: Ego Busters 8-1, Resurgence 4-5, Blacklist/Submission Squad 3-6.

Comedy Part 762: Hey Guys, I'm Working With Josh Blue

Location:  Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee:  Spencer Tegtmeyer
Feature:  Tim Convy
Headliner:  Josh Blue

My Saturday plans changed as I was asked to do a guest set on the Saturday late show...getting to work with a former Last Comic Standing winner was a pretty cool thing.  I drove him from the hotel to the club and he's a really good dude.  The 7:00 show had a packed house...the 9:15 show wasn't QUITE as full but it was still a fun audience.  I seem to be more comfortable on stage when I don't plan things out meticulously in advance; this was a good example of that as I focused on doing a strong five minutes.  It was a full weekend as I drove Josh from the hotel to the show (I'll never look at apples the same way again), then got up early this morning to drive Josh and Bruce Veach to Lambert Airport...gotta put in the work and pay dues, you know?

Weekend wrestling

ROH TV

-Commentators:  Ian Riccaboni & Colt "Boom Boom" Cabana.
-War Machine(Todd Hanson & Raymond Rowe) d. Jay White & Jonathan Gresham; Rowe pinned Gresham after he boosted Gresham up into an over-the-shoulder powerslam by Hanson (9:52 aired).  "The Punishment" Damien Martinez attacked White after the match.
-Josh "The Goods" Woods d. Shane Taylor via rollup after the referee stopped Taylor from using a chair (5:29 aired); "God's Gift" Q.T. Marshall did commentary and encouraged Taylor to beat down Woods after the match, giving him a payoff after the damage was done.
-The Young Bucks(Matt & Nick Jackson) fought The Motor City Machineguns(Chris Sabin & Alex Shelley) to a no-contest to retain the Tag Team Titles when The Addiction("The Almighty" Christopher Daniels & "The Heavy Metal Rebel" Frankie Kazarian) attacked both teams (9:59 aired).
-Next week:  Bully Ray & Mark Briscoe vs. Heavyweight Champion "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes & "Hangman" Adam Page.

The referee was breaking up a fight on the floor between Flanagan and Houston as Jackson reversed Blade’s figure-four leglock, but Big Daddy hit Jackson with his cane. That allowed Blade to turn the hold back over and the ref returned to count Gary’s shoulders down on the mat.
-Next week:  The Starr Twins(Nathan & Matthew) vs. Bodily Harm(Bobby D & Jimmy D), plus Manny Fernandez vs. "The New Raging Bull".

SICW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about last Saturday's Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling show at the Community Center in East Carondelet, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

The main story of the night was a packed house and questionable air conditioning, leaving the fans in a rather sweaty environment...by the end of the night, the venue actually ran out of bottled water.  The main story on my end was completely forgetting about the earlier start time; since the last time I attended a show in East Carondelet, they had moved their start time from 8 PM back to 7 PM.  I realized this fact slightly before 7:00 so I jumped in the car and rushed to East Carondelet as fast as possible...as it turned out, the show began with an extended talking segment so I didn't miss any matches!

Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus; your referees were Shaft, Jay King, and Nick Ridenour.

Promoter Herb Simmons hyped the upcoming shows, including an appearance by Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat in Swansea.  Former Classic Champion made his first appearance in East Carondelet since retiring and forfeiting the title, thanking the fans for their support after the death of his father.  USA Championship Wrestling promoter Bert Prentice was in the house as the show featured the debut of their Tag Team Champions, The Starr Twins(Nathan & Matthew).  As I finally entered the building(fans filled me in on the rest), Herb was interrupted by Bubba Troll who wanted to issue an open bodyslam challenge...Herb made it so.

Keith Smith Jr. vs. Ax Allwardt:  I believed these two crossed paths once in the past and wrestled to a time-limit draw.  Keith Jr. is using his father's old theme music("Back In Black" by AC/DC).  Keith's a big boy, billed at around 280 lbs.  These two have similar styles and had a solid opener, ending with Ax's piledriver in 6:16.

Bodily Harm(Bobby D & "The Enforcer" Jimmy D) vs. The Starr Twins(Nathan & Matthews):  The Starrs had their championship gold with them; this was my first time seeing them in action.  While the low ceiling probably impeded their bigger aerial moves, they had a strong showing in their Midwest debut...I hope to see more of them in the St. Louis area down the line.  The finish saw Nathan superkick Bobby D into Matthew's German suplex for the three-count in 10:22...cue post-match mutual respect and all that.

Promoter Herb Simmons interviewed "The Raging Bull" Manny Fernandez about his career...as has become tradition, Travis Cook interrupted in an attempt to make a name for himself.  Travis said he had found the true toughest man in Texas, "The New Raging Bull"...the man in question looked suspiciously like Waco with a slightly altered mask.  At any rate, the match was set for later in the evening.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Two bottles of water, Pepsi, and Mountain Dew.  With the conditions of the building, it was a good idea to stay hydrated...

Bubba Troll Open Bodyslam Challenge:  Each segment had opening and closing bells as each individual "challenger" stepped up to the plate...you won by successfully bodyslamming the opponent.  The Big Texan was the first to step up to the plate...he matched up well with Troll but was unable to slam him.  Troll bodyslammed Texan to win that challenge in 0:20.  Next up was Keith Smith Jr. who had some height and leverage on Troll, but he wasn't up to the task and Troll slammed him to the mat in 0:13.  Ax Allwardt tried to stick and move, but it wasn't enough and Troll powered him down in 0:25.  "The Enforcer" Jimmy D gave it a go, but Troll slammed him in 0:15.  Last up was "Big Country" Clint Poe...it seemed like he had a decent shot at getting the job done, but Poe's slam attempt didn't quit work out(shenanigans were alleged but I didn't see anything; update as warranted once I see the video on Wrestling Explosion).  Troll bodyslammed Poe in 0:21 and that was all she wrote...however, the tension boiled over as everyone ganged up on Troll, leading to Poe successfully slamming Troll!  Of course, Troll said that bodyslam didn't count...

"The Raging Bull" Manny Fernandez vs. The New Raging Bull(w/ Travis Cook):  I am admittedly unfamiliar with Fernandez's work; he did bring his gear in case he ended up in a match.  Manny kept it basic with mat-based holds to control the action...the fans enjoyed the action so that's what counts.  Travis got frustrated and tried to interfere, but Fernandez ran the masked man into his manager and got the rollup pin in 5:57.  Travis misheard the ring announcement and thought his man had won...he was disappointed to hear the true result.

Flash Flanagan & "Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson vs. Cowboy Marc Houston & Johnny Blade(w/ Big Daddy):  All four men have recent history, including Jackson's claim that he could escape Blade's figure-four leglock.  Jackson had a chance to test that theory as Blade locked him in his signature hold...Gary managed to reverse the hold, but the referee was occupied with Flanagan and Houston on the floor.  Big Daddy entered the ring and whacked Gary with his cane, allowing Blade to turn the hold back over...when the official returned to the ring, Gary was down and out so he was counted down for three in 10:41.  This issue is far from settled...

Intermission numero dos~!  Concessions were half off at this point, but the hamburgers were sold out by the time I decided to go to the table.  In the meantime, Manny Fernandez was just chilling in the bar area and chatting with nearby fans...heh.  "Your Canadian Hero" Sean Vincent came out for some small talk on the microphone, noting that he was scheduled to face Jayson Khaos but Khaos couldn't make it to the show.

Moondog Rover vs. "Volatile" Curtis Wylde, dog collar match, referee Wyldefyre:  After Wyldefyre counted down her man last month(it has been acknowledged that the two are husband and wife), she was appointed as the referee for this match as well.  The stipulation dictated that the loser would have to stay away from Wyldefyre.  This was the tag-four-corners variety of dog collar match, though Wyldefyre accidentally went to count a pin at one point...whoops.  Both competitors ended up bloody by the end of it...we got the now-standard finishing sequence to this style of match with a man tagging the corners behind his opponent until both had tagged three corners.  (That applies to any tag-four-corners bout like bullrope, strap, or chain/dog collar...trace it back to the Savio Vega-Steve Austin strap match from 1996.)  The two fought before the final corner and Wyldefyre finally had to intervene...by kicking Moondog below the belt.  Wylde tagged the final corner, leading to some P.D.A. with his wife before she finally decided to call for the closing bell in 10:44.  So ends that particular story...

"Ironman" Ken Kasa vs. "Superstar" Steve Fender(w/ Travis Cook):  Classic Champion "The Icon" Chris Hargas, oddly left without a match for the evening, joined the television commentary for the bout...I can only assume this was an unofficial top-contenders' bout.  These two have had some really good bouts in the past and this was no different, though I don't think they've fought to a decisive winner yet.  Travis got involved(as usual), allowing Hargas to BELT Kasa on the floor...that brought out Flash Flanagan to chase down the champion, but he slipped on the floor and fell badly.  He came up clutching his shoulder; he had previously injured his collarbone, if I remember correctly, so I can only hope that he didn't reaggravate it.  Fender missed his swandive headbutt and Kasa lined up for his John Wu Dropkick, but Cook blatantly grabbed his foot to intervene and got his man disqualified in 13:30.  With Flanagan out of commission, Gary Jackson and Sean Vincent hit the ring to save Kasa from a double-team beatdown by Hargas and Fender.  Jackson stepped up to challenge Hargas...I wonder if that was an audible and it was supposed to be Hargas-Flanagan as the next championship match.  Ah well, such is life...

As you can tell, I'm extremely far behind on these commentaries...I went to Dynamo Pro last night, but I'll have to miss the National Wrasslin' League show in St. Peters tonight as I'm doing a guest set at Hey Guys Comedy with headliner Josh Blue(former Last Comic Standing winner).  There's also Pro Wrestling Championship Series in Alton, IL on Sunday, so it'll be another full weekend.

LAST weekend wasn't quite over for me, but that's another story for another time...tune in next time.  Same Pat-Time, Same Pat-Channel.

That's my special comment for this, the forty-third wrestling show I've attended in the year 2017.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

I went to the show straight from work and forgot my notebook, so I didn't do much preparation before I went on stage.  I went on late and we had a decent audience...I focused on my pizza delivery material and bookended it with my established material.  I need to figure out a balance between a good open-mic set and working out new material...I haven't written much in a while and I want to get out of that writer's block.  I am doing a guest set on Saturday's late show at Hey Guys Comedy with headliner Josh Blue(from Last Comic Standing)...hope to see you there!
