HRW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Sunday's High Risk Wrestling show at the Belle-Clair Fairgrounds Expo Center in Belleville, Illinois.

This newer promotion had a slightly better turnout than the last one; good to see the word is getting out. The setup was different as well; the show was set in a smaller section of the Expo Center, so there wasn't as much wide open space in the event area.

The lineup was shuffled a bit; the original listing had Arik Cannon vs. Ace Steel, Bolt Brady vs. Vic Capri vs. Blake Belakis, and Shane Hollister vs. Christian Rose in a singles match. These were changed to Capri facing Steel for a shot at A.C.H. later in the night, Tony Kozina taking Capri's place in that triple threat bout, and Cannon being added to the Hollister-Rose match for another triple threat. Hope we eventually get to see Cannon-Steel as I was looking forward to that one.

Your ring announcer was Brian Thompson, your referees were Brian Stoltz and Nick Ridenour, and your video commentators were Ben Simon & Patrick "Presumably No Longer An Intern" Brandmeyer.

Mike Outlaw, Sir Isaac, & Nicholas The Titan vs. Davey Vega, "The Maniac" Paco Gonzalez, & "The New Hotness" Danny Adams: This was the dark match and took place about fifteen minutes before the scheduled start time of 4 PM, so we didn't call the action. Outlaw, Isaac, and Nicholas were the fan favorites here with Vega and the Elgin proteges as the heels. Nicholas was the only one in the match who I wasn't familiar with; he wrestles out of Ohio. Solid outing by all involved; Paco got hit with a series of big moves, ending in a Macho elbow from Nicholas for the three-count in 7:51.

Bolt Brady vs. Tony Kozina vs. Blake Edward Belakis: Brady was the fan favorite here despite his heel turn in an alternate universe(St. Louis Anarchy). At different times, Belakis and Kozina bided their time outside the ring while the other two fought. Three-way matches tend to be no-countout-no-DQ anyway(in order to avoid one person being counted out/DQed and trying to figure out who "wins" out of the remaining two), so it made sense. With the more relaxed rules of HRW, it was an especially good tactic. (To recap: No countouts; DQs are automatic and ONLY in the event of outside interference, foreign object usage, or deliberatly striking the referee.) Brady fought the odds and pinned Kozina after his Angel's Wings/lungblower combo(called the Tesla Coil, if my half-assed Google search is any indication) in a time of 7:36.

Justice Jones vs. Samson Walker: This was a case where I should have done a bit more research before my commentary gig as I wasn't too familiar with either man. Jones wrestles in the Chicago area and has been appearing a bit for AAW. Walker had a cup of coffee with Ring Of Honor in 2011-2012 and primarily wrestles in Puerto Rico nowadays. Both are big boys and this was a solid power battle with Jones as the fan favorite. Jones delivered an impressive dropkick off the second rope at one point. Walker CHEATED TO WIN~! with a rollup and feet on the top rope for leverage in 7:51...don't know if that was necessarily "rulebreaking" in the HRW environment, but one could certainly call it unethical. The two traded words and then fists after the bell...looks like this issue isn't over yet.

"Icepick" Vic Capri vs. "Crazy" Ace Steel: As previously noted, the winner would challenge A.C.H. for the Heavyweight Title later in the show. I recognized Capri's name but admittedly hadn't seen many of his matches; he's a sixteen-year veteran who primarily competes in the Chicago area. Steel is the current WLW Heavyweight Champion and was one of the Second City Saints in ROH with C.M. Punk and Colt Cabana. Steel came out as the heel and snapped at the ring announcer for using the "Crazy" nickname. Capri won a good match with Sliced Bread #2 in 11:16 and they shook hands afterwards.

reDRagon(Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish) vs. Uhaa Nation & Moose(w/ Magic Man): O'Reilly & Fish made a big entrance to Taylor Swift's "You Belong With Me"...tremendous. They had their ROH Tag Team Title belts in tow and said they were glad to be here in "Bellevue, Indiana". They did the old open-challenge deal and Moose came out, saying Magic Man could conjure up the ideal tag team partner for him. Magic Man brought out a big box and worked his, well, magic...revealing Uhaa Nation. I saw Nation a handful of times at High Voltage Wrestling shows, but he's become a major player on the national independent scene with Dragon Gate USA. Moose was a former football player who was signed by Ring Of Honor as a hot prospect; he's been very impressive in his short time as a wrestler.

This was the longest match of the show as the "Moose Nation" team initially dominated with its size and power advantage, but the tag experience of reDRagon allowed them to turn things around and isolate Moose for a while. Nation got a hot tag, pier six, bonzo gonzo...Nation hit a Death Valley Driver on O'Reilly followed by a major standing moonsault, but Fish broke up the pin by BELTing Nation for the cheap DQ in 18:56(!). Good guys stood tall at the end of it as O'Reilly & Fish escaped with their belts that I don't THINK were on the line...ah well.

Brian Thompson did a brief interview with the visiting Beautiful Bobby Eaton, who said he was bringing a "new Midnight Express" to the next show on Sunday, December 28th. Bob Holly and Bart Gunn could not be reached for comment.

"The Anarchist" Arik Cannon vs. "The New World Man" Shane Hollister vs. Christian Rose: Cannon and Rose were both looking to rebound from losses at the first HRW show(Cannon to Dustin Bozworth, Rose in a tag match with Matt Cage against The Hooligans). Hadn't seen Hollister in this area in a while(he works St. Louis Anarchy on occasion). They established things pretty quickly as Hollister and Rose double-teamed Cannon on several occasions...of course THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE so the alliance didn't last. The endgame saw Cannon rally and fend off both opponents, only to get rolled up by Rose with a handful of tights in 9:23. Good times.

A.C.H. vs. "Icepick" Vic Capri for the Heavyweight Title: A.C.H. won a triple threat match with Bolt Brady and C.J. Esparza at the previous show, then went on to win a three-way dance with Blake Belakis and Nick Brubaker to become the first champion. He had a slight advantage in being the fresh competitor after Capri had already wrestled, though Capri had a decent amount of time to rest between his matches. It started out as a face/face matchup(SPORTSMANSHIP~!), but Capri gradually moved into the subtle heel role against the more popular A.C.H. I don't know the whole story about A.C.H. missing the Ring Of Honor show in Toronto, but the issues don't seem to be significant; he had a strong showing in the Champions vs. Allstars match at their Saturday show. He's still identified as originally being from Texas despite moving to the St. Louis area a while back. At any rate, another good matchup; A.C.H. showed some versatility as he won with a rolling prawn cradle and bridge in 11:42. SPORTSMANSHIP~! ensued afterwards.

"Unbreakable" Michael Elgin vs. Uhaa Nation(w/ Magic Man): This was the advertised main event; like Capri, Nation wrestled twice but had some rest time between his bouts. Both men were fan favorites here as Magic Man never got directly involved; it was a great display of both power and agility for both guys. As someone who hasn't seen a lot of his recent work, I was really impressed by Uhaa Nation and hope to see more of him in the future. I was fortunate to see Elgin at two shows this past weekend; I've been a fan of his for a while and thought he came dangerously close to "can't win the big one" status in ROH. I like TEH WORKRATEZ~! as much as lot of people, but sometimes a fan just wants to see the "good guy" beat the "bad guy"; that's something that will never get old. Match quality is fine, but it's up to the promoters to give meaning to the matches and their outcomes. Otherwise, what reason is there to care about the outcomes?

Okay, that was a bit of a tangent...heh. Uhaa Nation is a big dude who can pull off a standing shooting star press, something you'd normally expect out of a smaller competitor. (The move was popularized by Amazing Red and, in this neck of the woods, Matt Sydal.) Both men threw their best shots at each other...I'm fine with that in moderation, though a show full of those kind of matches can be tiring for a fan. Elgin finally sealed the deal after the turnbuckle powerbomb/spiral bomb combo in 15:27...cue handshake and respectful promos from both. Elgin said he'd been wanting to face Nation in the ring for a long time, but this was their first one-on-one meeting.

The wrestling scene in this area has been very busy lately, as evidenced by the crowded Saturday we just had. As the number of area promotions increases, it's important for each one to establish its own identity and audience. Thankfully, things should be a bit simpler for the next month and a half.

-Commentators:  Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, & John Bradshaw Layfield.
-John Cena & Dean Ambrose won a non-title triple threat match with Tag Team Champions Goldust & Stardust and Jimmy & Jey Uso when Cena pinned Stardust after the F-U.
-Women's Champion A.J. Lee & Layla El d. Paige Knight & Alicia Fox; Layla walked out on A.J., but A.J. still got the win over Alicia after a Shining Wizard.  A.J. dished out some post-match abuse on Layla for her walkout.
-Randy Orton d. Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler(non-title) by blocking a Fameasser, then dropping Ziggler out of the powerbomb position down into an RKO.  Antonio Cesaro did commentary and Seth Rollins watched the match from ringside.  Orton and Rollins had a brief confrontation after the match, but then Rollins took out Ziggler with the advanced curbstomp.
-Seth Rollins d. Jack Swagger(w/ Zeb Colter) via victory roll with a handful of tights; Orton watched the match from ringside.  After the match, Orton RKOed Swagger...leading to another tense exchange of words with Rollins.
-Alexander Rusev(w/ Lana Perry) d. The Big Show by DQ when Mark Henry broke up the Accolade(camel clutch).  Show and Henry surrounded Rusev at ringside, leading to Show PUNCHing out Rusev.
-Mike Mizanin(w/ Damien Sandow) d. U.S. Champion Sheamus O'Shaunessy by countout(non-title); Miz and Sandow both tried to crawl under the ring and Sheamus got occupied with Sandow, allowing Miz to beat the ten-count.
-Brie Bella, Natalya Neidhart, & Naomi Night(w/ Rosa Mendes & NeNe Leakes) d. Nikki Bella, Summer Rae, & Cameron Lynn when Brie pinned Nikki after the Bella Buster(X-Factor).
-Dean Ambrose d. John Cena in a contract-on-a-pole match; Triple H, Stephanie McMahon-Helmesly, Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, and Kane were all at ringside.  All hell broke loose with the ringside parties, tying up Cena long enough for Ambrose to retrieve the contract.

Anarchy Wrestling TV #453

-Commentators:  Brett Wolverton & Jonathan Feltner.
-"The Real" Slim J called out C.B. Suave for costing him the Young Lions' Title to Joey Rhymer...he got Miss Rachael and her entire stable(Rhymer, Heavyweight Champion B.J. Hancock, & Lars Manderson).  Rachael trashed Slim J until he decked Rhymer, triggering a gang attack by the threesome.  Hancock dropped Slim J with the piledriver...Alex Avgerinos tried to help but was thrown shoulder-first into the ringpost by Hancock.  That left Avgerinos in bad shape for his scheduled matchup and Rachael called for a referee to start the bout...
-Joey Rhymer(w/ Miss Rachael, Heayweight Champion B.J. Hancock, & Lars Manderson) d. Alex Avgerinos after a springboard knee strike to retain the Young Lions' Title (4:16 aired)
-"The Lethal Dose" Stryknyn d. "Wild" Billy Buck to earn the next shot at the Heavyweight Title; Hancock ran out to interfere and Buck knocked him off the apron, but Stryknyn took the opportunity to spear Buck for the win (11:26 aired).
-"The Technician" Todd Sexton & "Hit For Hire" Bobby Moore d. Heavyweight Champion "The Modern Classic" B.J. Hancock & Lars Manderson(w/ Miss Rachael & Joey Rhymer) to retain the Tag Team Titles.  Hancock set up Moore for a piledriver on the floor but Billy Buck ran out to drop him with the Buckshot superkick; that led to Moore hitting Manderson with a roaring elbow and Sexton covering Lars for the pin (13:04 aired).
-Next week:  The Urban Assault Squad vs. Mikael Judas & Azrael vs. Iceberg & Se7en, plus Geter vs. Jagged Edge.

Dynamo Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Dynamo Pro Wrestling show at The Sports Academy in Glen Carbon, Illinois.

When several wrestling promotions run shows in one general area, event overlap can be unavoidable. Such was the case on Saturday when there were three indy shows in the greater St. Louis area...if you went a bit further east, you could also add the one-shot(?) Pro Wrestling Collision event in Nashville, Illinois. It didn't help that the Cardinals were playing Game 1 of the National League Championship Series at Busch Stadium II AND there was a Blues game at Scottrade Center. As a result, wrestling show turnouts were a bit lower...though the Dynamo show actually seemed to have a few more people than usual.

Several wrestlers worked multiple shows in the same night, resulting in some unusual match placement on the shows. Gary Jackson worked the opener at SICW in Swansea, then went to MMWA in St. Louis for a match there. Espinosa worked the opener at Dynamo before going to South Broadway for a 60-Minute Ironman Match with Da'Marius Jones. Ken Kasa worked both SICW and Dynamo. Oddly, Ricky Cruz only had a match at SICW and wasn't on the card for Dynamo despite being Heavyweight Champion; I think I heard that he was injured but don't hold me to that.

Your ring announcer was Chris Roedel(with Luke Roberts handling extra announcements); your referees were Eric Allen(!) and Patrick Hook. Hadn't seen Allen at a wrestling show in an official capacity in quite a while...sounds like he's easing back into things.

"Dirdey" Jake Dirden & Jackal vs. Brandon Espinosa & Elvis Aliaga(w/ Lucy Mendez) for the Tag Team Titles: Very interesting...Ricky wasn't around and Lucy was in Espinosa's corner. That may create a conflict of interest when those three all cross paths again. I'll freely admit that it's hard to hate Lucy...the STL tattoo helps. (Go Cards!) Would like to see more of her in the ring, but it's tough to get fresh matchups with the handful of female wrestlers in the general area. Good stuff here; Lucy got involved on a few occasions, including an early tripup of Jackal that turned the momentum in her team's favor. Hot tag Dirden, casa en fuego, bonzo gonzo...Jackal and Espy took each other out of the game and Dirden went for the kill against recent rival Aliaga. However, Elvis' trip to Chokeslam City was diverted by a blatant low blow from Lucy on Dirden...right in front of the ref, so that was a DQ at 9:32. The good guys rebounded to clear the ring and this feud...MUST CONTINUE~!

Sir Isaac vs. "The Alternative" Brandon Gallagher: Isaac is one of the newest Dynamo trainees; before this, I had only seen him in a battle royal and a one-on-one match with fellow rookie Mike Outlaw. This was his first traditional face-vs.-heel outing and I thought he looked really good. He pulled off a nice flying rana off the apron before Gallagher cut him off and took control. Gallagher's hit the skids as of late, so the possibility of an upset was pretty good. Isaac nailed a beautiful 450 Splash late in the match, but wasn't able to cover right away and Gallagher reached the ropes to escape defeat. Isaac went to the well once too often and Gallagher tripped him up, causing an uncomfortable landing on the turnbuckle...and the internal observation on my part that Sir Isaac had just discovered gravity. (I apologize, ladies and gentlemen.) Gallagher got the pinfall after that(with a handful of tights for good measure) in 8:48.

Brandon Aarons vs. "The" Evan Morris: Morris' introduction now includes "intergalactic thumb wrestling champion" as well as "former prom king"; coming out to "Beat It" by Michael Jackson is a nice touch as well. Aarons' hair status remains pristine and, yes, he did tell me to say that. Solid action here; Aarons won with a modified Burning Hammer in 8:15.

"Unbreakable" Michael Elgin vs. "The Rebel/Belt Collector" Jeremy Wyatt: Elgin's story has been a significant one in the national wrestling scene; until a month ago, he was Ring Of Honor Heavyweight champion with no sign of his reign coming to an end any time soon. However, Jay Briscoe continued his trend of unexpected title victories...I didn't see his win over Kevin Steen coming, either. The bigger story was Elgin's visa status, something that kept him from returning to the U.S. until fairly recently(he was at St. Louis Anarchy last week). ROH advertised Elgin's return for Saturday's show, but Elgin responded to them on Twitter saying that he WOULDN'T be there and seemingly quit the promotion. He had already been booked for High Risk Wrestling on Sunday, but he was a late addition to the Dynamo card on this night against Midwest standout Wyatt.

Elgin's presence on the card probably helped the attendance; the turnout was noticably better than usual for Glen Carbon. These guys had a really good match, I thought; to the best of my knowledge, it was the first time they had faced each other. The matchup could have realistically gone either way as Wyatt made a thing out of defeating indy wrestling standouts for a while(in Metro Pro). The ending saw Wyatt escape a turnbuckle powerbomb attempt and pull the referee between himself and Elgin. The momentary ref distraction allowed Wyatt to get in an undetected low blow, then score the upset(albeit a tainted one) with the Lightning Spiral in 13:58. I suspect these two will meet again down the line...

CUE INTERMISSION~!

"The New Hotness" Danny Adams vs. Steven Kennedy vs. Keon Option vs. Mike Outlaw: Option is a Dynamo trainee who was making his in-ring debut; he substituted for Barackus in the announced show lineup. It can be difficult to judge a person's skill when there are multiple people in the matchup, but he looked fine from what I saw of him. The match was relatively short compared to some of the other bouts on the card; a dive sequence saw Outlaw take out Option and Adams with a somersault plancha, then Kennedy followed up with an Asai moonsaul to the floor. Kennedy hit Option with the Splash Mountain(sitout Razor's Edge-style powerbomb), but Adams dropkicked Kennedy to break up the pin attempt and stole the fall on Option in 5:23.

"The Maniac" Paco Gonzalez vs. "Showtime" Bradley Charles: It looked like Paco had a lot of friends in attendance as a particular section of the crowd was really into him. This was a solid bout; SBC has mostly been a heel in Dynamo but, depending on the opposition, he can play the face role. Charles won with the TKO in 10:21...unfortunately, the Paco fan club left shortly after the matchup.

I saw something similar at another recent show when a group was clearly there to see one particular person and left after his match. Maybe people have other stuff going on, but it seems like a slight against the other wrestlers when you don't stick around the whole show. I see it at comedy shows as well; sometimes those people in the audience go one further by making a point to ONLY make noise for their friend (even if other comics are deserving of a reaction). Bit of a sidetrack on my part, but just something I had seen a few times recently and felt a need to address.

Team Dynamo(Billy McNeil, "The Don Mega" Shorty Biggs, Outtkast, Jack Gamble, & Jon Webb) vs. The Travis Cook Organization("Ironman" Ken Kasa, Michael Magnuson, Dave DeLorean, Shawn Santel, & Mauler McDarby), elimination tag match: Travis Cook was not in attendance for Dynamo OR SICW on this night; Executive Director Mark Bland announced at the Fenton show that Travis would be barred from the building for this one. (Notably, Bland wasn't at the show either.) I've always been a fan of the Survivor Series format so I'll admit some bias when it comes to this style of matchup. Billy was a random addition to this one as everyone else in the matchup had some degree of history with each other. Thanks to Chris Roedel for passing along the elimination times...

The good guys hit a series of dives, including Billy going Ridiculously Dangerous(tm) with a somersault plancha off the top rope. However, the heels took the initial lead when Magnuson pinned Gamble after a Death Valley Driver in 4:43; Gamble kept going after Magnuson until the ref finally convinced him to leave the ring. The feud between High Level Enterprise and the Black Hand Warriors continued as Webb and Magnuson took the fight to the floor; that exchange was highlighted by Webb hitting Magnuson with a moonsault off the guardrail. However, that led to both men fighting to the backstage area and being counted out at 8:07. (Both men were legal, but the eliminations came off awkwardly as Eric Allen continued officating with the guys in the ring; Patrick Hook came out to tell Chris that Webb and Magnuson were eliminated via countout.)

The "Travis Cook guys" maintained a 4-on-3 advantage, but Team Dynamo evented it up when Shorty hit Paydirt on McDarby to eliminate him at 10:44. McDarby lurked at ringside and got in a cheapshot with his shillelagh, allowing Santel to pin Shorty in 11:26. McNeil took out Santel with a modified Codebreaker in 12:15, evening things up with two on each side. Kasa and DeLorean worked together well for a while but things broke down between the four remaining competitors; that led to DeLorean powerbombing McNeil onto Outtkast, leading to Kasa pinning McNeil at 19:46 and putting Outtkast in a two-on-one situation.

Unfortunately for the heel side, their teamwork backfired at a key moment as Kasa superkicked DeLorean by mistake, allowing Outtkast to roll up Kasa for a flash pin in 23:05. That left Outtkast and DeLorean to battle it out; Outtkast has had surprising luck with his corkscrew moonsault senton off the top rope after going YEARS without hitting it. That move sealed the deal in 26:05, giving Team Dynamo the victory.

Switching gears to the other area shows: It sounded like SICW got a good turnout for their Swansea fundraiser, but the baseball playoffs affected the attendance a little bit. Heath Hatton retained the SICW Classic Title against Bull Bronson in the main event while the feud between Gary Jackson and Mohamad Ali Vaez continued. Two newcomers from Ohio Valley Wrestling debuted: Jade Dawson and Robbie Walker(not the WCW guy).

On the MMWA side, Brandon Espinosa retained the Heavyweight Title against Da'Marius Jones in a 60-Minute Ironman Match. The regulation time expired with a 4-4 tie, but sudden death was ordered; shenanigans with a chair and the involvement of A.J. Williams led to Espinosa retaining and more trouble brewing between Tag Champs Williams & Jones. Elsewhere on the card, Moondog Rover retained the T.V. Title in a no-DQ match against Kevin Lee Davidson and Dave Osborne won a gauntlet match to earn the next shot at Espinosa.

I haven't seen anything about the Pro Wrestling Collision show yet; I will post if/when I get the info. All I knew about the show was Bull Bronson defending the Heavyweight Title against Ax Allwardt.

As for shows in other parts of the country...who would have thought that Madman Pondo would work a Ring Of Honor show(albeit only in an interference spot)?

-Kelly interviewed new Heavyweight Champion Jay Briscoe to start the show.  Briscoe was interrupted by Adam Cole who vowed to regain the title.
-Moose & Robert D. Evans(w/ Veda Scott & Ramone) d. The Bloodbound Warriors(Red Scorpion & Grey Wolf)(w/ Prince Nana); Moose speared both opponents at once and Evans pinned Wolf with a jackknife cradle.
-Michael Bennett won a 20-Man Honor Rumble to earn a Heavyweight Title shot:

#17 Cedric Alexander; he didn't come out right away as Tommaso Ciampa tried to enter instead(with the implication that Ciampa had attacked Alexander backstage).  ROH officials and Nigel kept him out of the ring.
#18 Tag Team Champion Bobby Fish; Strong eliminated O'Reilly before Alexander finally entered the match.

Alexander eliminated Whitmer & Jacobs at the same time and then Strong threw out the weakened Alexander.  Strong & Fish eliminated each other, Cole threw out Cheeseburger, Mark Briscoe eliminated Cole, and then Bennett threw out Briscoe for the win.  Cole wasn't happy about not winning the match and didn't want to celebrate with his Kingdom stablemate...

SICW Wrestling Explosion

-Commentator:  Larry Matysik.
-Larry did a sitdown interview with Big Daddy(w/ Red River Jack) about Jack's upcoming match with Bull Bronson.  Larry said that if it's revealed that Red River Jack truly is Ron Powers, then Powers would be banned from SICW for life.
-Joined in progress:  Heath Hatton d. "Ironman" Ken Kasa by countout to retain the Classic Title; Kasa's manager Travis Cook was banned from the building. Kasa tried to cheat with a foreign object in his boot, but the referee caught him; that led to the official accidentally getting knocked down in a collision. Hatton got a hold of the metal baton in Kasa's boot, but Kasa stopped him from using it with a low blow. The referee recovered to count Kasa's pin attempt, but Hatton barely got his shoulder up at 2 1/2. The two fought on the edge of the ring and that led to Hatton spearing Kasa off the apron, causing Kasa to hit his head on the edge of the timekeeper's table...after that, Kasa was unable to beat the ten-count back into the ring. Flanagan ran out to attack Hatton...but Daniel Eads limped out to the ring and Flash backed off. However, Flanagan challenged Hatton to defend his title against the "real champion" in the near future...
-Larry did a sitdown interview with Flash Flanagan about the tag match at the next East Carondelet show(Flanagan & Kasa vs. Hatton & Eads).  Flanagan claimed to be the uncrowned champion since he pinned then-champion Ricky Cruz a year and a half ago and never got a title shot after that (the decision was reversed in the match with Cruz).
