Tuesday DPW Results From St. Louis, MO(Off Broadway) + This Week In Wrestling

-Brandon Aarons & Mike Outlaw d. "The Madman" Paco Gonzalez & "The New Hotness" Danny Adams; miscommunication between Gonzalez and Adams led to Outlaw getting the pinfall on Paco after the Macho Elbow (8:16).
-Michael Magnuson(w/ Travis Cook) d. "The Don Mega" Shorty Biggs; Travis hit Shorty with his cane behind the referee's back, allowing Magnuson to win with a TKO (10:47).

-Jackal d. Tag Team Champion Brandon Espinosa with the Killswitch #2(turnbuckle-walk Tomakazi) (8:29).
-Outtkast d. David DeLorean(w/ Travis Cook).  DeLorean focused his attack on Outtkast's arm for most of the match, but Outtkast made the comeback and hit his corkscrew moonsault senton.  Travis distracted the referee and DeLorean nearly hit his manager when Outtkast ducked out of the way, but Outtkast rolled up DeLorean for the pin with a handful of tights (10:07).
-"Dirdey" Jake Dirden d. "Ironman" Ken Kasa(w/ Travis Cook) by reversing Kasa's attempt at an Asiatic Spike into a variation of his own hold for the submission (11:56).
-Tag Team Champion "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz(w/ Lucy Mendez) d. "Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson in a no-DQ match to retain the Heavyweight Title.  Gary was prepared to bash Cruz with a chair, but Lucy entered the ring and hit him with a low blow from behind.  Ricky capitalized with a DDT on the chair for the win (8:23).

WWE Raw

-Commentators:  Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, & John Bradshaw Layfield.
-Dolph Ziggler won a triple threat match with Antonio Cesaro and Mike Mizanin(w/ Damien Sandow) to retain the Intercontinental Title.  Miz jumped off the top rope into a European uppercut from Cesaro, but Ziggler superkicked Cesaro and got the pin on Miz.
-Layla El(w/ Summer Rae) d. Rosa Mendes(w/ Tyson Kidd & Natalya Neidhart) with the Layout(Rude Awakening).
-Dean Ambrose, having raided the merchandise stand, threw T-shirts out to the fans...Seth Rollins(w/ agents Jamie Knoble & Joey Mercury) came out to get his Money-In-The-Briefcase back and Dean let him have it.  However, Rollins opened the case and got sprayed by green slime...heh.
-Bo Dallas d. Mark Henry with the turnbuckle-walk Bo-dog.
-Brie Bella won a handicap match against Cameron Lynn & Eva Marie(w/ Nikki Bella) when she rolled up Cameron.
-Heath Slater & Titus O'Neil(w/ Hornswoggle in a gator costume) d. Los Matadores(Fernando & Diego)(w/ El Torito) when Heath pulled Fernando off the ropes and pinned him with a handful of tights; Adam Rose(w/ Rosebuds) did commentary.  Hornswoggle abused Torito after the match(even doing Luke Harper's "Gator Roll" on him) until Rose & The Bunny helped Los Matadores clear the ring.
-On Main Event:  Mark Henry vs. Bo Dallas.
-Alicia Fox(w/ Paige Knight) d. Women's Champion A.J. Lee(non-title); A.J. tried to drag Paige into the ring and Alicia axe-kicked A.J. for the win.  Paige dropped A.J. with the Ram-Paige(cradle DDT) after the match.
-U.S. Champion Sheamus O'Shaunessy d. Damien Sandow(w/ Mike Mizanin)(non-title) via Brogue Kick.
-John Cena & Dean Ambrose d. Randy Orton & Kane by DQ when Seth Rollins attacked Ambrose after Dean hit the Dirty Deeds(headlock driver) on Orton.  Cena & Ambrose fought all three men, but the Authority trio turned it around when Cena and Ambrose had a dispute over who would get to fight Rollins.  Ambrose and Cena got RKOed by Orton and chokeslammed by Kane before Rollins advanced-curbstomped each man onto the Money-In-The-Bank briefcase.

Anarchy Wrestling TV #451

-Commentators:  Brett Wolverton & Jonathan Feltner.
-"Country Jacked" Corey Hollis d. "The Violence Artist" Trever Aeon after the elevated DDT (joined in progress; 3:02 aired).

-"The Italian-American Bad Boy" Tommy Penirelli d. C.B. Suave to retain the T.V. Title; Young Lions' Champion "The Real" Slim J was the special guest referee.  Penirelli countered an attempted Moneymaker(flippy neckbreaker) into a modified Oklahoma roll for the pin (11:38 aired).
-"Wrestling's Most Dangerous Weapon" Geter d. Jacob Ashworth with the big splash (3:11).
-"The Technician" Todd Sexton & "Hit For Hire" Bobby Moore d. "The Deadly Sin" Se7en & The Jagged Edge by DQ to retain the Tag Team Titles; Moore hit Jagged Edge with his loaded elbowpad but Se7en pulled the referee out of the ring to stop the three-count (10:17 aired).  Moore left with the title belts as Se7en & Jagged Edge beat down Sexton...but he had second thoughts and ran back in for the save, cleaning house with one of the belts.
-Next week:  Azrael vs. Jagged Edge, plus Slim J vs. Joey Rhymer for the Young Lions' Title and B.J. Hancock vs. Billy Buck for the Heavyweight Title.

SICW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling show at the Holy Rosary Gym in Fairmont City, Illinois.

SICW occasionally ventures outside the friendly confines of East Carondelet; Fairmont City has been an occasional visit on the itinerary. In this case, it was a fundraiser for the local fire department, complete with an appearance by the mascot "Fire Pup".

I only knew one match ahead of time, which was the Hatton-Flanagan title match. The night was shaping up to be full with two other shows in the area on Saturday night, but the MMWA event in Herculaneum was cancelled. Larry Matysik estimated the attendance to be around 300; I had the privilege of talking with Larry for a good portion of the evening. The audience was into the show for the most part, from what I could tell.

Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus; your referees were Keith Smith Jr. and Jay King.

Shiloh Jonze vs. "Dead Sexy" Daniel Gunner: This was a battle of SICW newcomers. Jonze competes for Ohio Valley Wrestling and debuted at last week's show; Gunner made his first appearance at the July event. Seemed like a slight style clash but they worked together well enough. Jonze won with his Trouble In Paradise-style flying roundhouse kick in 5:45.

"The Man Of Tomorrow" Daniel Eads vs. "Ironman" Ken Kasa(w/ Travis Cook): These two have faced each other in the past, but Kasa's no longer Classic Champion and Eads appears to be on the rise. Eads has a good look and good size; he's a little over a year into his wrestling career so he's still in the process of gaining experience. I'm not sure if this was his longest match to date, but I imagine it was close. On the other side of things, Kasa's had some long matches in the past(including his 40-minute best-of-three-falls encounter with Jake Dirden). Kasa stalled a lot in the early minutes of the bout and Travis got in a cheapshot or two...bwahahaha. Eads rallied and landed a Superman Punch near the end, but Kasa rolled out of the ring and the fifteen-minute time limit expired.

Promoter Herb Simmons granted the wishes of Eads and the fans for five more minutes...Kasa and Travis protested but Kasa did re-enter the ring and the bell rang for the restart. However, Kasa immediately bailed out of the ring and walked back to the dressing room area with his manager...Eads won by countout (didn't get a time on the restart), but I suspect these two will meet again.

Red River Jack(w/ "The Famous" Big Daddy) vs. Bubba Trohl: Had never seen Trohl before; he's a big guy, almost as big as Bull Bronson. If the masked man IS Ron Powers as Ricky Cruz claimed last week, he's dropped some weight and is competing in more standard wrestling gear(after wrestling in jeans and a T-shirt in recent years). It speaks volumes that I was actively looking for Jack to be Ron Powers and had to second-guess myself upon first viewing. Jack gave Trohl a guided tour of the building, including a short trip into the wall followed by a beatdown with a steel chair. Trohl made a brief comeback but got caught with the Double-R-J(Diamond Cutter) for the finish in 4:08.

Intermission numero uno took place here...yes, I keep track of these things so other people don't have to. Shut up.

Farmer Billy Hills vs. Mohamad Ali Vaez: M.A.V. relieved Drew of the microphone to spout off in not-'Murican(Farsi?); Hills responded by requesting an interpreter. This was a far better and more competitive match than I was expecting; Hills even hit a swandive headbutt at one point(with Vaez rolling to the ropes to escape defeat). Hill went to the top rope again, but Vaez avoided the move on the second attempt and the Akbar Clutch(cobra clutch from the camel clutch position) sealed the deal at 6:54.

Big Jim Hoffarth & The Tornado vs. "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz & Waco: Hoffarth & Waco's history is well-documented. Tornado was an unknown masked competitor...I was hoping for a discus punch a la Kerry Von Erich, but no go. About halfway through the match, Tornado suffered a freak injury when he jumped off the second rope and went down clutching his leg. Tornado was assisted to the backstage area as Hoffarth attempted to fight on his own...Big Daddy had been scouting the match and offered the services of Red River Jack as an impromptu substitute partner. Herb Simmons made it so and Jack was allowed to tag into the match, renewing hostilities with Ricky Cruz. Jack took out Waco with the Double-R-J before Cactus-Clotheslining Cruz and himself out of play. There was a minor snafu with the finish as I don't think Hoffarth was legal when he big-splashed Waco for the pin, but such is life. The good guys won in 9:43.

Intermission number two was here...

Heath Hatton vs. Flash Flanagan for the Classic Title: Flanagan got Hatton's attention last week with his assault on Heath's protege Daniel Eads. Flash has been near the top of the rankings for most of his SICW stint; Flanagan actually pinned Ricky Cruz in a title match at the Argosy Casino in Alton about a year and a half ago, but the decision was reversed. This was a solid matchup that did a good job of setting up future developments. Referee Keith Smith Jr. was knocked down and Flanagan bashed Hatton with his kendo stick(breaking the stick in the process!). Flanagan covered and Keith recovered to count three in 11:01, seemingly making Flanagan the new champion.

BUT WAIT~! Daniel Eads came out to tell the official what Flash had done...on top of that, Keith Jr. noticed the proverbial smoking gun in the form of the splintered kendo stick. Thus the decision was reversed and Hatton retained via DQ; for the second time, Flanagan was denied the championship after nearly winning it through underhanded means. Flanagan took out his frustration on everyone in sight(including the ref!) and Ken Kasa joined in the beatdown until Hatton and Eads cleared the ring...nicely setting up the tag match at the next East Carondelet show.

It's interesting to note that Hatton's been more of an underdog as champion than his predecessors. He nearly lost clean to Ricky Cruz as Ricky had him pinned with the ref down, then Red River Jack interfered to cost Cruz the match. He edged out a countout win over Kasa last week, then was pinned by Flanagan here before the decision was reversed. It's a change of pace from previous champions, especially the ones of the fan favorite persuasion.

"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson & "Dirdey" Jake Dirden vs. Bull Bronson & Ax (Allwardt)(w/ Travis Cook): Gary and Dirden have had recent issues with Bronson as well as the Travis Cook Organization in general. This was a good way to cap off the night with a decisive face win; Dirden and Bronson took their fight to the floor and Jackson pinned Ax with a sunset flip(OLDSCHOOL~!) in 10:13.

I don't know any matches for the Swansea show at the moment, but several matches are already set for East Carondelet on the 18th: Hatton/Eads vs. Kasa/Flanagan, Hoffarth vs. Cruz, Jackson vs. Vaez, and Red River Jack vs. Bronson.

Tomorrow night is Dynamo at Off Broadway; the only announced match is Ricky Cruz defending the Heavyweight Title against Gary Jackson in a no-DQ match(stemming from Ricky's cheap victory over Gary at the previous Off Broadway event).

A very busy October looks like this:
Friday 10/3: SLA in Alton, IL
Saturday 10/4: DPW in Fenton, MO
Saturday 10/11: DPW in Glen Carbon, IL; SICW in Swansea, IL; MMWA in St. Louis, MO(South Broadway)
Sunday 10/12: HRW in Belleville, IL
Saturday 10/18: SICW in East Carondelet, IL (One Man Gang appearing)
Saturday 10/25: PWCS in Granite City, IL

Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

SICW Wrestling Explosion

-Commentator:  Larry Matysik.
-"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson fought Mohamad Ali Vaez to a no-contest; the referee lost control of the brawl and threw the match out after both men shoved him away.
-Flash Flanagan d. "The Man Of Tomorrow" Daniel Eads. Eads tweaked his knee when he delivered a double-axhandle off the top rope, then reaggravated it when he hit an inverted atomic drop. The veteran Flanagan was able to take advantage of the injury and focused on the leg, wearing Eads down with a figure-four leglock. Flanagan finally trapped Eads in an anklelock; Eads didn't tap out but the referee called for the bell, declaring Eads unable to continue. Flanagan didn't stop there as he did more damage to the leg with his kendo stick and a steel chair...Classic Champion Heath Hatton finally hit the ring to run off Flanagan.   Flash said that he was wondering what it would take to get the champion's attention...
-Flashback to November 1980:  Dick The Bruiser & Jesse Barr d. Mike George & Buzz Tyler when The Bruiser pinned Tyler after the atomic stomp off the second rope.

Saturday SICW Results From Fairmont City, IL + Other Show Results

-Shiloh Jonze d. "Dead Sexy" Daniel Gunner after a Trouble In Paradise-style flying roundhouse kick (5:45).
-"The Man Of Tomorrow" Daniel Eads d. "Ironman" Ken Kasa(w/ Travis Cook) by countout; they initially wrestled to a fifteen-minute time-limit draw but promoter Herb Simmons granted Eads' request for five more minutes.  Kasa immediately bailed out of the ring after the restart and took a walk for the countout.
-Red River Jack(w/ Big Daddy) d. Bubba Trohl with the Double-R-J (4:08).
-Mohamad Ali Vaez d. Farmer Billy Hills via Akbar Clutch(cobra clutch from the camel clutch position) (6:54).
-Big Jim Hoffarth & Red River Jack(w/ Big Daddy) d. "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz & Waco.  The match started with Hoffarth teaming with The Tornado, but Tornado tweaked his knee and had to be helped to the backstage area.  Big Daddy offered Jack's services as a substitute tag team partner and Herb Simmons made it official, leading to Jack and Cruz renewing their recent hostilities.  In the end, Hoffarth pinned Waco after the big splash (9:43).
-Heath Hatton d. Flash Flanagan by reversed decision to retain the Classic Title.  The referee was knocked down and Flanagan took the opportunity to bash Hatton in the head with his kendo stick; Flash scored the pin as the ref recovered to make the three-count (11:01).  However, Daniel Eads told the referee what had happened and the official saw that Flanagan's kendo stick was splintered from the deed, so he overturned his initial ruling.  This triggered a post-match fight; Ken Kasa ran in to back up Flanagan, but Hatton and Eads sent them out of the ring with dropkicks.  Flanagan took out his frustrations on the referee with the broken kendo stick.
-"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson & "Dirdey" Jake Dirden d. Bull Bronson & Ax Allwardt(w/ Travis Cook) when Jackson pinned Ax with a sunset flip as Dirden & Bronson brawled on the floor (10:13).

-Bayley Rose d. Alexa Bliss with the Belly-To-Bayley Hugplex (3:37).  Afterwards, Bayley called NXT Women's Champion Charlotte Flair out to the ring and asked for a rematch...Charlotte said that Bayley earned her respect and accepted her challenge, but said the result would be the same.

-Los Matadores(Fernando & Diego)(w/ El Torito) d. Heath Slater & Titus O'Neil when Fernando pinned Slater with a cross-bodyblock off the top rope; Adam Rose(w/ Rosebuds) did commentary and celebrated with the winners afterwards.
-Mark Henry did a frustrated promo, trashing the fans for pushing him into the rematch with Alexander Rusev when he was hurting from the previous bout.  That brought out The Big Show in an attempt to calm him down...he promised to stand by Henry and said he'd knock Rusev out on Smackdown.
-Paige Knight d. Naomi Night via rollup with feet on the ropes for illegal leverage.  Women's Champion A.J. Lee did commentary and hit Paige with the title belt after the match.
-Kofi Kingston d. Bo Dallas after the Trouble In Paradise.
-Mike Mizanin(w/ Damien Sandow) hosted MizTV with Dean Ambrose as his guest.  Miz went off on a tangent about being cheated by Dolph Ziggler(with Sandow mimicking his words and movements the whole way) until Dean finally got tired of him and gave him a headbutt.  Ambrose tossed Sandow out of the ring and planted Miz with the Dirty Deeds(headlock driver), then propped him up in his director's chair and thanked him for being a great host...

WWE Raw

-Commentators:  Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, & John Bradshaw Layfield.

-Natalya Neidhart(w/ Rosa Mendes) d. Summer Rae(w/ Layla El) via Sharpshooter.
-Dean Ambrose d. Kane by DQ when Seth Rollins attacked Ambrose after he hit the Dirty Deeds(headlock driver).  Ambrose fought with Rollins but took a chokeslam from Kane...Seth teased re-entering the ring to do more damage, but Dean got a hold of a steel chair and Rollins backed off.
-U.S. Champion Sheamus O'Shaunessy & Jimmy & Jey Uso d. Antonio Cesaro & Tag Team Champions Goldust & Stardust when Jey pinned Goldust after the top-rope splash.

-John Cena d. Randy Orton(w/ Seth Rollins & Kane) by DQ when Rollins and Kane broke up the STF.  The Authority trio brought Cena to ringside and thought the covered box at ringside would contain cinderblocks again, but it actually contained Dean Ambrose!  Cena and Ambrose got the better of Orton and Kane as Rollins escaped into the audience.

SICW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling show at the Community Center in East Carondelet, Illinois.

Not a lot to talk about from this past week, really. The next few weekends will be really busy around here with multiple shows on the same nights. On top of that, my twenty-year high school reunion will be in the first weekend of October, so I'll have to figure out my plan of attack for those few days.

Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus, your referees were Keith Smith Jr. and Jay King.

Big Jim Hoffarth & Farmer Billy Hills vs. Christian Rose & Ax (Allwardt): This was Rose's SICW debut. Hills went with the overalls instead of the spandex he wore in his previous appearance...probably a good choice. Rose attempted to emulate Hulk Hogan's bodyslam of Andre the Giant when he went up against Hoffarth...probably NOT a good choice. In the end, Hoffarth chokeslammed Rose for the win in 9:27.

"Dirdey" Jake Dirden vs. Bull Bronson: Bronson was flying solo with manager Travis Cook barred from the building. This would fall under the Gorilla Monsoon definition of the "irresistable force meeting the immovable object"; Dirden had a similar encounter with Barackus at the Dynamo show in Eureka. With a fan favorite holding the title, it's sensible to build up the rulebreaker side of the roster...Dirden stayed strong despite the loss. If a 400-plus-pound guy falls on you in mid-superplex, you're probably gonna stay down...and that's exactly what happened in 9:28. Not sure what business Bull had on the top rope in the first place, but it worked out for him so who am I to say anything?

"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson vs. Mohamad Ali Vaez: This was more angle than match as Vaez got the microphone beforehand and spoke some not-'Murican, prompting Gary to interrupt for some enlightenment about the merits of This Great Country Of Ours(tm). It was also more of a fight than a wrestling match, resulting in a relatively quick no-contest in 5:00. The referee tried to establish some level of control and that resulted in some mutual ref abuse and the bout being thrown out. This feud...MUST CONTINUE~!

Promoter Herb Simmons interviewed "The Birdman" Koko B. Ware. Koko told the story about his wife finding his original macaw Frankie in a pet store and how that was a selling point when Vince McMahon brought him into the WWF. (He told the same story on the Ringsyders podcast on the Missouri Wrestling Revival podcast...shameless plug!) He went out of his way to talk to the younger fans in attendance, encouraging them to follow their dreams. Koko seemed like a really down-to-earth guy and it was very cool to get his autograph.

On a personal note, Koko was in the opening match on the first live wrestling event I ever attended in March of 1993. Gary Jackson worked that show as well and I also got Gary's autograph on my event program. I'll need to look up Koko's Memphis work as I've heard he was a great heel there. He also had one of the best brainbusters in wrestling(known as the "Ghostbuster"). One of my main memories of Koko was the High Energy tag team with one of my all-time favorites, Owen Hart.

Herb also brought out Gary and they talked about how he and Koko got their start in the business around the same time...they nearly formed a regular tag team in those days and Herb teased that they should team up in SICW sometime. Hmm...

Bobby D & Shiloh Jonze vs. "The Money" Matt Cage & "All About Me" Mallaki Matthews: Cage & Matthews had an extended personalized introduction for Drew to read...nicely done. Jonze is another OVW competitor; saw him once or twice on Ring Of Honor's TV show when ROH and OVW had a working relationship. The two tag matches were the only unannounced bouts on the card; always interesting to see who's on the show. Jonze hit Mallaki with a Trouble In Paradise-style flying roundhouse kick out of nowhere, getting the win in 7:35.

"The Man Of Tomorrow" Daniel Eads vs. Flash Flanagan: I say it a lot: Selling is such a lost art that when someone does a good job of it, the fan's first instinct is to wonder if the wrestler is legitimately hurt. Eads is still fairly new to the wrestling game and has been working with some more experienced competitors lately: Ricky Cruz, Cage, and now Flanagan. It seemed to take a few minutes before they got on the same page, but things clicked once the leg injury came into play. Eads appeared to tweak his knee on the landing from a double-axhandle off the top rope, then aggravated it further with an inverted atomic drop; after that point, Flanagan focused his attack on the leg. Eads survived a figure-four leglock and was able to hit a Superman Punch out of nowhere, but couldn't make the pin cover right away and it only got a two-count. Flanagan took out the leg again and hooked an anklelock; Eads didn't surrender, but the referee declared Eads unable to continue in 14:16.

Flanagan wasn't done as he assaulted Eads' bad leg with his kendo stick and then a steel chair...that drew out Classic Champion Heath Hatton and Flanagan retreated. Flash told Heath point-blank that he was wondering what it would take to get his attention...Flanagan obviously has his sights set on the championship once again, so he got on Hatton's radar by doing some damage to his protege.

Red River Jack(w/ "The Famous" Big Daddy) vs. "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz: This was another bout that was set up to establish the story. Jack blatantly interfered in Ricky's title shot at Hatton last month, resulting in Cruz's long-awaiting title opportunity going up in smoke. Ricky took out Jack's leg at one point, but that didn't last too long. Jack survived Ricky's superkick finisher and went for his Double-R-J(Diamond Cutter/RKO), but Ricky bailed out of the ring and deliberately got counted out at 9:06. Cruz got the mic and started talking about how "you shouldn't be here," then finally clarified himself: "I know it's you, RON."

I'd done the same math that Ricky had: Red River Jack was an alias once used by King King/Bruiser Brody when he wrestled under a mask, Ron Powers was known as a Brody protege, and Ron lost to Ricky in a loser-leaves-town match earlier this year. However, from my observation, this new masked man doesn't APPEAR to be Ron Powers...I could be wrong, of course. Ron is technically only gone for the remainder of the calender year and could potentially make a comeback in 2015, but we'll see.

Heath Hatton vs. "Ironman" Ken Kasa for the Classic Title: This was Kasa's rematch for the title after Hatton ended his thirteen-month reign in July, but manager Travis Cook was banned from the building. Travis' absence was noticable in terms of the crowd noise for the match; it's hard to argue with what he brings to the table as a ringside presence. Kasa got to the ropes to escape the Crippler Crossface this time around, then used a metal baton hidden in his boot to do extra damage(how Memphis can you get? :)). The referee was knocked down and Hatton pulled off Kasa's boot to get the weapon for himself, but Kasa stopped him with a low blow...that resulted in a close near-fall. The match ended with an odd countout finish as Kasa teased a uranagi off the apron onto the timekeeper's table below, but Hatton escaped the setup and speared Kasa off the apron. That resulted in Kasa hitting his head on the table and not being able to beat the ten-count, so Hatton retained via countout win in 15:55. Hatton retained, but the door is open for another Kasa rematch since Heath didn't beat him decisively.

After the match, Flash Flanagan attacked the worn-out Hatton...Daniel Eads limped to the ring to help out(SELLING~!) but Flanagan was just leaving. It looks like Hatton-Flanagan will be the main event for next weekend's Fairmont City show...

Next Saturday will be busy with three shows: SICW in Fairmont City, MMWA in Herculaneum, and WLW in Troy, Missouri. The following Tuesday will be Dynamo's return to Off Broadway.

So far, October looks like this:
-Friday 10/3: St. Louis Anarchy in Alton, IL
-Saturday 10/4: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in Fenton, MO
-Saturday 10/11: Dynamo in Glen Carton, IL; MMWA in St. Louis, MO(South Broadway); SICW in Swansea, IL
-Saturday 10/18: SICW in East Carondelet, IL (One Man Gang appearing)
-Saturday 10/25: PWCS in Granite City, IL

Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

-Mike Mizanin(w/ Damien Sandow) d. Dolph Ziggler(w/ "R-Truth" Ron Killings) to win the Intercontinental Title; Sandow got superkicked off the apron but Miz got Ziggler in an O'Connor Roll with a handful of tights for the cheap win.
-Seth Rollins d. Roman Reigns by forfeit; Reigns had emergency hernia surgery over the weekend and will be out of action for a few months.  Rollins issued an open challenge and Dean Ambrose made a surprise return to brawl with Seth...Triple H and Stephanie McMahon finally had to bring out agents and security to restrain Ambrose.
-Alexander Rusev(w/ Lana Perry) d. Mark Henry with the Accolade(camel clutch).
-Randy Orton d. Chris Jericho; Jericho jumped off the top rope and got caught with a mid-air RKO for the finish.

-Big Jim Hoffarth & Farmer Billy Hills d. Christian Rose & Ax Allwardt when Hoffarth pinned Rose after the chokeslam (9:27).
-Bull Bronson d. "Dirdey" Jake Dirden; Dirden tried to cut off Bronson on the top rope, but Bronson fell on top of the superplex attempt and got the pinfall (9:28).
-"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson fought Mohamad Ali Vaez to a no-contest; the referee lost control of the brawl and threw the match out after both men shoved him away (5:00).
-Promoter Herb Simmons interviewed WWE Hall Of Famer Koko B. Ware in the ring.  Koko called the younger fans in attendance to ringside and talked to them about following their dreams.  Herb also brought out Gary Jackson to talk about his and Koko's formative years in the wrestling business.
-Bobby D & Shiloh Jonze d. "The Money" Matt Cage & "All About Me" Mallaki Matthews; Jonze pinned Mallaki after a Trouble In Paradise-style flying roundhouse kick (7:35).
Flanagan finally trapped Eads in an anklelock; Eads didn't tap out but the referee called for the bell, declaring Eads unable to continue (14:16).  Flanagan didn't stop there as he did more damage to the leg with his kendo stick and a steel chair...Classic Champion Heath Hatton finally hit the ring to run off Flanagan.  Flash said that he was wondering what it would take to get the champion's attention...
-Red River Jack(w/ "The Famous" Big Daddy) d. "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz by countout.  The competitive matchup saw Jack survive Cruz's superkick and nearly deliver the Double-R-J(Diamond Cutter); at that point, Cruz bailed out of the ring and walked away from the match (9:06).  Ricky got the house microphone and claimed he knew the identity of the masked man:  "I know it's you, RON!"
-Heath Hatton d. "Ironman" Ken Kasa by countout to retain the Classic Title; Kasa's manager Travis Cook was banned from the building.  Kasa tried to cheat with a foreign object in his boot, but the referee caught him; that led to the official accidentally getting knocked down in a collision.  Hatton got a hold of the metal baton in Kasa's boot, but Kasa stopped him from using it with a low blow.  The referee recovered to count Kasa's pin attempt, but Hatton barely got his shoulder up at 2 1/2.  The two fought on the edge of the ring and that led to Hatton spearing Kasa off the apron, causing Kasa to hit his head on the edge of the timekeeper's table...after that, Kasa was unable to beat the ten-count back into the ring (15:55).  Flanagan ran out to attack Hatton...but Daniel Eads limped out to the ring and Flash backed off.  However, Flanagan challenged Hatton to defend his title against the "real champion" in the near future...

-Sgt. Chris Melendez d. Kenny King(w/ Montel Vontavious Porter) when Melendez countered a Royal Flush attempt by going up and over into a sunset flip pin.  King dropped him with the Royal Flush after the match, then tried to pull off Melendez's prosthesic leg until Ken Anderson ran him off.
-Samoa Joe d. Homicide to retain the X-Division Title; Homicide attempted a Gringo Cutter(after hitting one earlier in the match) but Joe caught him in the Kokita Clutch for the tapout win.  Cowboy James Storm and The Great Senada attacked both men after the match, then Storm called out Manik(in new attire and mask) to join in the beatdown.

-Bobby Lashley(w/ M.V.P. & Kenny King) d. Bobby Roode to retain the Heavyweight Title.  The referee ejected M.V.P. from ringside a few minutes into the match, then later "Showtime" Eric Young ran off King.  Roode tweaked his knee when he leapfrogged a spear attempt late in the match, giving Lashley the opening to hit his second spear of the match for the win.

WWE NXT

-Commentators:  Rich Brennan, Alex Riley, & Renee Young.
-Titus O'Neil paid a visit to the NXT Arena...he felt like the NXT guys took some of his time on Raw a few weeks ago, so he felt obliged to take some of their time.  That brought out Sami Zayn for a response; NXT Champion Adrian Neville decided to pay a visit as well, sparking tension between himself and Zayn.  Tyson Kidd made an appearance to cap things off, siding with Titus but also trying to stir things up between Neville and Zayn.  Zayn said he wouldn't have done what Neville did(putting his hands on the referee)...and Neville responded by saying that that's why Zayn's not the champion.  General Manager S. William Regal ordered the expected tag match.
-NXT Women's Champion Charlotte Flair d. Emma Tayla(non-title) with the Natural Selection(low-altitude somersault Cutter) (4:08).
-Hideo "KENTA" Itami d. Justin Gabriel after a double-stomp off the top rope (3:35).  Konnor O'Brian & Rick Viktor of The Ascension attacked Itami after the match and laid him out with the Fall Of Man(legsweep/flying European uppercut combo).
-Baron Corbin d. "The Moonchild" C.J. Parker with the End Of Days(Blackhole Slam-into-Flatliner) (0:40).
-Earlier today:  Carmella met Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady at the training center...it seems like she wants to be a wrestler since they got her fired from her hairstyling job.
-Titus O'Neil & Tyson Kidd d. NXT Champion "The Man That Gravity Forgot" Adrian Neville & Sami Zayn; Titus pushed Neville off the top rope onto the raised knees of Kidd, then Kidd covered Neville for the three-count (10:59 aired).
-Next week:  The Lucha Dragons(Sin Cara & Kalisto) defend the NXT Tag Team Titles against The Ascension.

WWE Superstars

-Commentators:  Tom Phillips & Renee Young.
-The Wyatt Family(Luke Harper & Erick Rowan) d. Los Matadores(Fernando & Diego)(w/ El Torito) when Harper pinned Diego after the discus lariat (3:19).
-Sin Cara d. Justin Gabriel; Sin Cara hit a top-rope Frankensteiner and Gabriel rolled through into a modified sunset flip for two, but Sin Cara countered that into a sunset flip pin for three (8:43 aired).

Comedy Part 526: Hey Guys, It's Almost Contest Time

Location: Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee: Joshua Slobe
After: Shane Nicolls
Before: Jessica Campbell

Since it's turned into a running gag at the club, I took the idea about blogging about each comedy performance from former St. Louis comic Marcus Robinson. The extra details(names of the emcee and the people who performed before and after me) are just me being neurotic like that.

Hey Guys Comedy is starting a comedy contest in October and I've entered...haven't done too many contests so I hope to do well. Finally came up with a good way to finish the joke I've been working on...since it's fairly elaborate, I read it straight out of my notebook and I thought that made it funnier. I felt like my set went well, for what it's worth. Want to write more new material in the upcoming weeks...hope to see you at the shows so you can hear jokes other than the stuff I've run into the ground in the past few years. :)

WWE Raw

-Commentators:  Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, & John Bradshaw Layfield.
-Chris Jericho d. Kane; Jericho dropkicked Kane in the knee and he ran into an exposed turnbuckle, then Jericho rolled him up for the pin.
-Jack Swagger(w/ Zeb Colter) d. Bo Dallas with the anklelock.
-Women's Champion Paige Knight & Nikki Bella d. A.J. Lee & Brie Bella when Paige pinned Brie after the Ram-Paige(cradle DDT).
-The Big Show d. Bray Wyatt(w/ Luke Harper & Erick Rowan) by DQ when Harper & Rowan interfered; Show double-chokeslammed Harper & Rowan after the match.
-U.S. Champion Sheamus O'Shaunessy & Tag Team Champions Jimmy & Jey Uso d. Antonio Cesaro, Goldust, & Stardust when Jey pinned Cesaro after the splash off the top rope.
-Naomi Night d. Cameron Lynn with the headscissors crucifix hold(called the Spider Twist when used by Japanese wrestler Mariko Yoshida...thank you, Wikipedia).
-Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler & "R-Truth" Ron Killings d. Mike Mizanin & Damien Sandow when Ziggler pinned Miz after the Zigzag.
-Roman Reigns d. Seth Rollins via spear.

Anarchy Wrestling TV #450

-Commentators:  Brett Wolverton & Jonathan Feltner.
-"The Real" Slim J d. "Hot Blooded" Dom Black after a package piledriver to retain the Young Lions' Title (6:32 aired).
-"The Italian-American Bad Boy" Tommy Penirelli d. Jacob Ashworth with the grapevine anklelock to retain the T.V. Title (6:42 aired).  C.B. Suave challenged Penirelli to a rematch for the title, saying it would be the last T.V. Title match between the two.
-Mike Posey d. "The Lethal Dose" Stryknyn; Heavyweight Champion "The Modern Classic" B.J. Hancock made his entrance along with Joey Rhymer, Lars Manderson, and Miss Rachael.  The referee was distracted and Manderson dropped Strkynyn with the Falcon Arrow, allowing Posey to capitalize with the Alabama Jam for the win (5:53 aired).  "Wild" Billy Buck saved Stryknyn from a post-match attack.
-"The Priest Of Punishment" Mikael Judas, Young Lions' Champion "The Real" Slim J, & "The Angel Of Death" Azrael d. "The No-Pain Train" Iceberg, "The Deadly Sin" Se7en, & "The Temptation" Shaun Tempers(w/ Agent/Attorney Jeff G. Bailey) when Azrael pinned Tempers after the Green Manalishi With The Two-Pronged Crown(cradle Michinoku Driver) (5:36 + 2:35 aired).  Bailey, already frustrated with Tempers' loss of the Young Lions' Title at Hostile Environment, argued with Tempers after the match and Se7en attacked Tempers from behind.  The Elite members(including Bailey) assaulted Tempers for several minutes until referees and security finally had to restore order at the behest of promoter Franklin Dove and representative Bill Behrens.  Guess that solved the problem of the three-member stable limit for the Elite...now it's Iceberg, Se7en, and Jagged Edge with Tempers ousted from the group.

MMWA Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance show at the South Broadway Athletic Club in St. Louis, Missouri.

As I previously said, I feel like I've done the MMWA a disservice as I haven't been to one of their shows in a while. My last show at South Broadway was in March and my last MMWA event was the one at the Cinco De Mayo Festival. I appreciate Timothy Miller posting the video clips on YouTube as I've been able to keep up with the product for the most part.

Lynn Mephisto posted on Facebook that he has parted ways with the promotion. He had a good run as a heel, including reigns as Battle Royal(Survivor) Champion and T.V. Champion. Also, as previously noted, Ace Hawkins "quit" after his Jr. Heavyweight Title loss to Everett Connors; apparently he has military obligations that will keep him out of the ring for the time being.

Attendance was still strong, though a bit down from the packed houses at South Broadway earlier in the year. Audience enthusiasm was no problem on this night.

The King Of St. Louis Cable Tournament was restructured as the four first-round winners were scheduled to face each other in a four-way dance final. I did a Special Comment about the tournament a few days ago, so go there for the salient details. The tag match was announced online at the last minute, as was Kevin Lee Davidson's substitution for Tony Kozina in the tourney.

Your ring announcer was Ben Simon, your referees were Nick Ridenour & Brian Stoltz.

Tag Team Champion Da'Marius Jones vs. Barackus(w/ J-Mal Swagg), King Of St. Louis Cable Tournament: These two faced each other in Barackus' MMWA debut in January...this was shaping up to be as one-sided as their previous encounter. However, Swagg got into a discussion with his Elitism compatriot over how to end the match; that led to Jones hitting Paydirt out of nowhere for the surprise win in 5:40. Barackus and Swagg argued after the match and Barackus teased the CLAWWWWW~! on Swagg, but J-Mal talked him out of it...

T.V. Champion Moondog Rover vs. Kevin Lee Davidson(w/ Co-Commissioner Sean Orleans), King Of St. Louis Cable Tournament: As noted, Davidson was replacing Tony Kozina in the tournament. Co-Commissioner Jim Harris made the same observation I did, noting that Kozina lost his qualifying match to Gary Jackson last month. Orleans did a "random draw" to decide the remaining two tournament participants and they shockingly(?) turned out to be members of the Elitism(or allies of the group, at the very least).

This match mostly consisted of Davidson working on Moondog's leg, though the time-compressed nature of the tournament meant that the first-round matches were relatively short. Davidson was in full control of the match and brought in a chair, destroying Moondog's leg for the DQ in 5:47. Several faces finally ran him off, including the newly-turned Jackson Whitechapel(who was double-crossed by Sean Orleans in a battle royal last month). Jim Harris ordered a no-DQ rematch for Herculaneum(nice job of pushing that show), but we later found out that Rover wouldn't be able to compete in the tournament finals. Didn't make much sense for Davidson to go for the chair when he did...I don't recall him making many pin covers so it didn't seem like he was frustrated enough to go that route. If the Elitism guys wanted to ensure that Moondog didn't make it to the finals, then maybe Davidson should have, you know, tried to win. Oh well.

Andrew "The Wolf" Wilder & Johnathan Zulu vs. LaMarcus Clinton & Chase King: This would determine the next challengers for the Tag Team Titles held by A.J. Williams & Da'Marius Jones. LMC & Chase are the former champions but fell short against A.J. & Da'Marius last month. Zulu is still looking for a steady tag team partner since his previous two tag matches against Elitism members ended in defeat(thanks to timely low blows).

Wilder was thrown out of the ring and the referee was checking on him, so King went for a low blow only to be blocked by Zulu. However, LMC intervened with a punt to the Universal Weak Point and Zulu wasn't ready for THAT...Chase capitalized with a Protobomb variation for the win in 6:58. No word on when the Tag Title match will happen...they didn't say anything about Herculaneum in that regard and, as it turns out, Da'Marius Jones will be otherwise occupied at the next South Broadway show...

Big Dave Osborne vs. Heavyweight Champion Brandon Espinosa vs. "Da Bomb" Brian James for the Survivor Title: This was a unique setup as they essentially had two back-to-back matches; the first was for Osborne's title and the second was for Espinosa's championship with a short rest period in between. The only real precedent was the match at WrestleMania 2000 with Kurt Angle defending the Intercontinental and European Titles against Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho; that led to Angle losing both belts without being pinned or made to submit. Since James wasn't pinned in last month's tournament qualifier(it was a tag match) and he had won last year's tournament, he got this opportunity...in fact, the match(es) featured all three previous tournament winners. This seemed time-compressed as well, especially given the stakes involved. James got the clean pin on Espinosa with his sitout gourdbuster finisher in 5:30, winning Osborne's championship.

Brandon Espinosa vs. Survivor Champion "Da Bomb" Brian James vs. Big Dave Osborne for the Heavyweight Title: With the wear and tear of the previous match as a factor, this one didn't last long...Espinosa bided his time outside the ring as James and Osborne fought. Orleans stuck his nose into things after James hit his finisher on Osborne, distracting James and then holding his leg to keep him from breaking up Espinosa's pin cover on Osborne. Espinosa retained his title in 2:51, but James made a good case for a future one-on-one title shot. Never fond of setups where a champion can lose a title without being pinned/made to submit...I've already talked about how I think MMWA has too many championships and it seems like there are a lot of title switches in recent months. At any rate, Espinosa is defending his title in Herculaneum against the winner of a battle royal that same night.

Tag Team Champion A.J. Williams vs. Evan Gelistico, King Of St. Louis Cable Tournament: Surreal to see Gelistico at South Broadway; he's been training there this year and worked a previous show or two for the promotion. This was the most technical bout of the night and also the only match that went over ten minutes. It was definitely a different sort of match than anything else on the card. A.J. got the tapout win with a modified cross-armbreaker(with Evan face-down on the mat) in 10:12. That meant three faces in the tournament finale(well, two since Moondog was out), so a heel had to win the other first-round match, right?...

"Night Train/Great One/Gorgeous" Gary Jackson vs. J-Mal Swagg(w/ Barackus): Barackus came out with Swagg but left the ringside area before the match started...guess there's still trouble in Elitism paradise. As I said, I was wondering if Swagg would win somehow since the faces won the other three tournament matches...but it didn't work out that way as Gary won with the Texas Cloverleaf in 5:46. Hmm, an all-face final...Gary reminded us of THE RULES~! afterwards.

"Risky Business" Everett Connors vs. Co-Commissioner Sean Orleans for the Jr. Heavyweight Title: After Connors upset Ace Hawkins for the title last month, Orleans decided to take matters into his own hands. Orleans got a good run of offense after Connors missed his first attempt at the guillotine legdrop; however, Everett came back to hit the move on the second try for the victory in 4:37. That led to a post-match attack by J-Mal Swagg to set up the Jr. Heavyweight Title match for Herculaneum. Whitechapel made the save again, wanting to get his hands on his former tag partner, but Orleans got away to save his own skin.

"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson vs. Tag Team Champion A.J. Williams vs. Tag Team Champion Da'Marius Jones vs. T.V. Champion Moondog Rover, King Of St. Louis Cable Tournament, four-way dance: To get technical about it, Moondog was eliminated via forfeit due to his injury. It was an all-face match which may have dampened the crowd response a bit...with Espinosa retaining his title, it seemed obvious that a face would be winning the tournament. There were a few rough spots in this one as Gary seemingly shrugged off A.J.'s first superkick at one point...Gary got Da'Marius in the Cloverleaf but ate another superkick, leading to A.J. scoring the surprise three-count on Jackson at 5:43(used the YouTube video to get the elimination time). That left the tag champs to do battle...tempers flared, but Jones hit Paydirt for the one...two...hesitation...one...two...three. Whoops. Anywho, that was the finish in 8:22.

All three guys had history with Espinosa...in Jones' case, he debuted in the area with an upset win over Espy at an SICW show in Hillsdale. Espy won the rematch at South Broadway and retained his title against him at the Cinco De Mayo show earlier this year. It surprised me when Jones made the challenge for the 60-Minute Ironman Match...I had only seen one match of that kind at an indy show around here: Bailey Mannix vs. Eric Allen at MECW in late 2011. Hopefully that'll be a good one...October 11th is shaping up to be a very busy night for indy wrestling in this area.

I was under the weather on Sunday so I didn't attend the Wrestling Invades America(fka Wrestling Invades Alton) show in Edwardsville...a few of my compatriots were there, though. There were some talented guys on the card, but reviews of the rest of the roster have been mixed to say the least. They never post their show results so I've only had YouTube clips for reference...hopefully someone(Ben Simon, Drew Abbenhaus, or Crimefighter) can provide a more detailed rundown of the events. (Crimey posted the quick-'n'-dirty results...looks like Moose wasn't at the show.) I have a morbid curiosity to see this group for whatever reason...

The rest of September:
-Saturday 9/20: SICW in East Carondelet(Koko B. Ware)
-Saturday 9/27: SICW in Fairmont City; MMWA in Herculaneum
-Tuesday 9/30: DPW in St. Louis(Off Broadway)

Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

-Commentator:  Larry Matysik.
-Flash Flanagan, Bull Bronson, & Waco(w/ Travis Cook) d. "Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson, Big Jim Hoffarth, & "The Don Mega" Shorty Biggs in an elimination tag match. Hoffarth hit Waco from the ring apron and Shorty got the pin after the Shortcut(corkscrew snapmare driver). Waco returned the favor by snapping Hoffarth's throat off the top rope behind the referee's back, allowing Bronson to roll up Hoffarth for a three-count. Shorty was the next to be eliminated as Bull pinned him after a Samoan Drop. That left Gary alone against two opponents, but he took advantage of a backfired double-team and countered a Bronson slam attempt with an inside cradle to get the fall. However, Flanagan had the last laugh as he KOed Jackson with a foreign object hidden in his trunks, scoring the winning pinfall.
-Larry did a sitdown interview with Travis Cook & Bull Bronson about "Ironman" Ken Kasa's rematch with Classic Champion Heath Hatton, as well as Bronson's match with "Dirdey" Jake Dirden.
-Red River Jack(w/ "The Famous" Big Daddy) d. Ax Allwardt with the Double-R-J(Diamond Cutter). Jack abused Ax with the timekeeper's table after the bell.

Saturday MMWA Results From St. Louis, MO

-King Of St. Louis Cable Tournament:  Tag Team Champion Da'Marius Jones d. Barackus(w/ J-Mal Swagg); miscommunication between the Elitism members led to Jones hitting the Paydirt out of nowhere for the upset win (5:40).  Barackus and Swagg argued after the match but Swagg talked Barackus out of a potential clawhold.
-King Of St. Louis Cable Tournament:  T.V. Champion Moondog Rover d. Kevin Lee Davidson(w/ Sean Orleans) by DQ(non-title) when Davidson attacked Rover's leg with a chair (5:47).  Davidson was replacing Tony Kozina as Co-Commissioner Jim Harris ruled Kozina ineligible due to losing his qualifying match at the August show.  Gary Jackson, Brian James, and Jackson Whitechapel finally hit the ring to run off Davidson after he continued to assault Rover's leg with the chair.  Harris ordered Davidson to face Rover in a no-DQ match at the Herculaneum show in two weeks, but also ruled that Rover was unable to compete in the tournament final due to his leg injury.
-LaMarcus Clinton & Chase King d. Andrew "The Wolf" Wilder & Johnathan Zulu to earn a future shot at the Tag Team Titles; Zulu blocked King's attempt at a low blow, but LMC kicked him below the belt as the referee was checking on an injured Wilder on the floor.  Chase took advantage with a Protobomb on Zulu to get the pin (6:58).
-"Da Bomb" Brian James won a triple threat match with Big Dave Osborne(C) and Heavyweight Champion Brandon Espinosa to win the Survivor Title, pinning Espinosa after the sitout gourdbuster (5:30).
-Brandon Espinosa won a triple threat match with Survivor Champion "Da Bomb" Brian James and Dave Osborne to retain the Heavyweight Title; James hit the sitout gourdbuster on Osborne, but Sean Orleans distracted James and held his foot as Espinosa stole the pinfall on Osborne (2:51).
-King Of St. Louis Cable Tournament:  Tag Team Champion A.J. Williams d. Evan Gelistico with a reverse cross-armbreaker (10:12).
-King Of St. Louis Cable Tournament:  "Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson d. J-Mal Swagg with the Texas Cloverleaf (5:46).  Barackus came out with Swagg but left before the -match started.
-"Risky Business" Everett Connors d. Sean Orleans with the guillotine legdrop to retain the Jr. Heavyweight Title (4:37).  J-Mal Swagg attacked Connors after the match until Jackson Whitechapel made the save...Orleans challenged Connors to defend his title against Swagg at the Herculaneum show and Co-Commissioner Jim Harris made it official.
-King Of St. Louis Cable Tournament Finals:  Tag Team Champion Da'Marius Jones won a three-way dance with Tag Team Champion A.J. Williams and "Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson (T.V. Champion Moondog Rover was injured and unable to compete in the scheduled four-way tournament final).  A.J. broke up Jackson's Cloverleaf on Jones with a pair of superkicks and pinned Gary for the first elimination (5:43).  The Tag Champs had to fight it out for the tournament victory and Da'Marius defeated Williams after the Paydirt (8:22).  After the match, Jones announced that he was cashing in his tournament win against Espinosa at the next South Broadway show on October 11th...in a 60-Minute Ironman Match!
