WOE Special Comment
Now, as promised, a special comment about last Sunday's Wrestling Over Everything show at the River's Edge Community Center in Centreville, IL.
DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.
I got the start time right; bonus. Said hi to Gary Jackson and Mark Bland who were also in attendance; Gary occasionally takes in the WOE shows as a spectator. General Manager Darkside was once again missing in action, meaning that Landlord had to relay his messages via phone/text message. The ring was set up diagonally with respect to the walls, which was an odd view of the action...I joked that someone must have played WWF WrestleMania Challenge for the NES recently. (I guess WCW SuperBrawl Wrestling for the SNES works as a reference too...)
Your ring announcer was Moe Romero-Kennedy; your referee was Jason Pemberton; your video commentators were Chris Kaelin & The Landlord.
Brandon Espinosa vs. Deacon Cash: Cash jumped Espy before the opening bell, just to make sure we knew who to cheer. Cash was coming off one of the biggest wins of his career the previous night at the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance show, cleanly pinning Gary Jackson. Espinosa's focus has been divided in recent months as he attempts to focus on advancing his career beyond the Midwest, but he's never opposed to earning some glory close to home. Cash went for his signature lariat, but Espy countered and caught him in the cross-armbreaker for the tapout in 11:36. After the match, The Landlord informed Espy that Darkside had granted him the next shot at the Heavyweight Title on May 20th...all righty then.
Jake Prater vs. Noah: Noah bore a striking resemblance to David X and I mistook him for David X at first; as it turns out, they're brothers. Prater has been on a path of destruction in WOE lately and this was no different, as he put away the upstart with a huge powerbomb in 1:24.
"The Infamous" Tyler Copeland & Benjamin Ulysses Trust vs. The Sabotage Squad(Krispy 2 Pop & John Boi): In a stunner, Copeland rolled up John Boi for a flash pin in 0:51...but the Squad called it a fluke and demanded an immediate no-DQ rematch. As you might expect, things broke down from there...John Boi even took out his aggression on Hardcore Andy(who was working security) with a chair! Presumably the clock was continued from the initial bout as it was called a 10:00 draw...by my timer, we got about 8:09 of the restart so that adds up. Landlord announced that the teams would face each other again on May 20th in a street fight so there would be an undisputed winner.
David X vs. "The Supreme" B.T. Daramola: While B.T. had the advantage in size and experience, David X was able to outmaneuver him in the early minutes of the bout...that was enough of a frustration that B.T. simply took a walk for the countout in 3:44. That was random...even more random was the surprise appearance by Everett Connors who beat down David X and took selfies after the fact. That's the most random grudge match ever...
Miss Monica Passeri vs. Harley: I hadn't seen Harley before; she competes in the Springfield, Illinois area from what I understand. While Monica was the more established competitor in this area(currently holding the World League Wrestling Women's Title), Harley scored a bit of an upset victory via Flatliner in 7:02. Harley continued to dish out punishment after the match, prompting Karim Brigante to come to the aid of his lady.
Intermission~! Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm): Mountain Dew and bottle of water.
"The Unholy Father" Richard Faith(w/ Harley) vs. "K.B. Violence" Karim Brigante for the Interstate Title: Due to the beating dished out earlier in the show, Monica was not in Brigante's corner as usual. Without her presence to counteract Harley, the deck was stacked against Karim on this night...a well-timed low blow behind the referee's back allowed Faith to retain via Blackhole Slam in 6:02. Monica came out after the match, but the Faith/Harley duo was just leaving...and Landlord announced a mixed tag match for May 20th.
"The Gypsy Warrior" Orion Creed vs. "The Notorious" P.T. Beckham: Creed was a nice surprise on the show. He gave Beckham a good fight, but Beckham's angling for another title shot at Mephisto so the outcome seemed inevitable. Beckham cut off Creed on the turnbuckes before finishing with the advanced curbstomp in 5:44.
Leone Mephisto vs. Billy McNeil for the Heavyweight Title: These two have a ton of history dating all the way back to Independent Hardcore Wrestling where they feuded over the championship; they also traded the Interstate Title in this promotion. Billy had a scary moment where he landed badly on a flying headscissors and took some time to recover, but he seemed okay later in the bout. Unfortunately this was not his night all around as P.T. Beckham stormed the ring and decked both champion and challenger with the title belt, leading to a DQ win for Mephisto(since he was struck first) in 11:03. Unfortunately this story got a pre-emptive conclusion earlier this week as Mephisto announced that he was forfeiting the WOE Heavyweight Title...presumably he won't be back, leaving the championship situation up in the air.
"2.0" Da'Marius Jones & LaMarcus Clinton vs. "Category 5" Corey Storm & Mickey Midas for the Tag Team Titles: Both challengers are regulars for IWA Mid-South; Midas started his career as Mickey Muscles and teamed with his brother Myron Reed in The Brotherhood. It's been notable that the Tag Titles have main-evented the shows in recent times over the Heavyweight Championship. I hadn't seen Storm before; I think he worked WOE in the past but I wasn't there to see him. I had seen Midas at least once at Glory Pro. They had a really good main event that was slightly marred by the involvement of the Sabotage Squad...their inference backfired in the end, leading to Jones pinning Midas in 9:53 after he and L.M.C. hit a Flatliner/Buff Blockbuster combo. Krispy and John Boi jumped the champions afterwards, but Storm & Midas came to their defense and fought off the Squad...cue Mutual Respect(tm) to close out the show.
I'm writing this after having attended the Pro Wrestling Championship Series show this evening, so I've got two more shows to write about...a non-profit journalist's job is never done, I suppose.
May looks like this:
-Friday 5/4: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in Glen Carbon, IL
-Saturday 5/5: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in St. Louis, MO(afternoon/Cinco De Mayo Festival); World League Wrestling in Troy, MO(evening);
-Sunday 5/6: Glory Pro Wrestling in Collinsville, IL
-Saturday 5/12: Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance in St. Louis, MO
-Saturday 5/19: Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in East Carondelet, IL
-Sunday 5/20: Glory Pro/Resurgence in Swansea, IL; Wrestling Over Everything in Centreville, IL
That's my special comment for this, the twenty-second wrestling show I've attended in the year 2018. Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

Comedy Part 798: Quintessential Comedy
Location: Quintessential Rooftop Terrace (St. Charles, MO)
Emcee: Jake Beckman
After: Lance Cain
Before: Spencer Perkins
We had a pretty good turnout in St. Charles for this show...I hadn't been in that area in several years since Lloyd & Harry's had regular open-mics. Shoutout to Crystal Yount for attending the show, arriving just in time for my set...I had a good ten-minute performance, though I had a couple of jokes that I wished I'd used. The goal is still to feature at a local comedy club and that will mean a comfortable 20-25 minutes...I just need to get to shows more regularly.

MMWA Special Comment
Now, as promised, a special comment about the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance show on Saturday, April 14th at the South Broadway Athletic Club in St. Louis, Missouri.
DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.
Some combination of allergies and weather changes seemed to wipe me out this past weekend...any time on Saturday or Sunday that I wasn't at a wrestling show, I was probably in bed. Taking better care of myself seems to be edging upwards on my personal priority meter...and if it means de-prioritizing professional wrestling, that's what it'll have to mean. Age and sedentary living decisions will catch up to anybody, I suppose.
I stopped for gas and cough drops on the way to the show and got to the venue later than usual...the line was out the door when I arrived, so I made a call to Ben Simon to check on whether I'd be able to get a ticket. I crossed paths with several familiar faces including "Evil" Jim Yount, Crystal Yount, Sadie Blaze, Mike Outlaw, and Drew Abbenhaus...always nice to be in good company for the evening. Of course, I didn't stay in one place for very long due to the lack of a dedicated seat...I also dressed a bit warmly for the evening as the crowded venue meant a stuffy atmosphere.
Your ring announcer was Ben Simon; your referees were Jay King, Shaft, and Nick Ridenour.
A lengthy segment kicked off the show as the St. Louis Wrestling Hall Of Fame was expanded to include the independent scene...and its first two entrants in that regard will be MMWA promoter Tony Casta and SICW promoter Herb Simmons. There are quite a few good candidates for this particular section of the STL Hall Of Fame, including Gary Jackson and Ron Powers. This meant that the opening match didn't start until around 8:30...
Frodo "The Ghost" Meyer(w/ Khayman & Abigail) vs. "The Caramel Bear" C.J. Shine(w/ The Snitch): Shine and Snitch are an odd team on paper, but they seem to know each other well enough to operate as a cohesive unit. Frodo was returning from injury; his absence meant that Khayman was left in a handicap match situation in March where Shine & Snitch got the victory. The outside parties(other than Abigail) got involved on a few occasions, but this meant that the referee's eye was not on the action as Frodo had Shine pinned after his wheelbarrow DDT finisher. As the official was occupied with a skirmish between Snitch and Khayman, Shine stunned Frodo with a mule kick to the Universal Weak Point and finished with a TKO in 8:41. I suspect this issue is far from over...
"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson vs. "The Incomparable" Deacon Cash: This was another continuation from the previous month as Cash was looking to avenge his previous loss to the multi-time Heavyweight Champion. Cash has dropped quite a bit of weight with the side effect of his ring attire looking a bit loose...hopefully he gets that resized. While he still throws a lot of suplexes, he may have to alter his style to accomodate his smaller size. Gary Jackson Fashion Watch(tm): Blue and gold robe, gold trunks with fringe. It was another competitive matchup between two of the top guys in the MMWA, but this time the result was different as Cash scored the upset with a sunset flip out of the corner in 11:38! Cash wasted no time in gloating about his victory, as you might expect...
Moondog Rover vs. "The Party Wave" Johnny Park: This was said to be the rest of an open challenge by Park, something which rarely goes well for the rulebreaking types. While Park stayed in the fight for longer than expected, he was simply overpowered on this night; Moondog OVAH finished with the front powerslam in 7:50.
Former local competitor Bishop Stevens said a few words to the fans...he was known in this area as "Atomic Dog" Steve Sharp (Kevin X's brother) and was MMWA Heavyweight Champion at one time. I also saw him work a WWF dark match as Ali Stevens. I only saw him once or twice in Gateway Championship Wrestling so I admittedly didn't know him that well, but nowadays he's an actor and has a movie or two coming out. Cool for him...hey, if you can make a living without getting yourself banged up, more power to you.
Intermission~! Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm): Cheeseburger, bottle of water, Sierra Mist. (I literally had nothing to eat that day before going to the show...)
"2.0" Da'Marius Jones vs. "The Spanish Red Devil" Ricky Rodriguez for the Cruiserweight Title: It was tough to tell who the fan favorite was supposed to be in this match, as Jones is technically a rulebreaker but still has a lot of fans at South Broadway. Ricky was set up for the underdog role, except that he was a relative unknown against the more established Jones. Rodriguez focused his attack on the arm of the champion, but Da'Marius made the comeback to win with a gourdbuster in 6:54. Afterwards, Commissioner Jim Harris informed Jones that his opponent for May would be a familiar foe: Brandon Espinosa! As Ben Simon noted, the title would be on the line if Espy made the weight limit for the championship...
"The Supreme" B.T. Daramola vs. "The Enforcer" Jimmy D, strap match: This stemmed from the show-ending bout in March where B.T. won by disqualification...it was under "tag four turnbuckles" rules. B.T. won a decent brawl in 7:39 by the above conditions...Jimmy D didn't take the loss well and attacked afterwards with the strap, but Ricky Rodriguez hit the ring to run him off.
Savanna Stone vs. "The Little Blue Dragon" Tootie Lynn Ramsey: The previous encounter between these two at Dynamo Pro was interrupted by Rahne Victoria, but this time they got to battle it out to a conclusion. Both were fan favorites which made for an interesting match flow...over the course of the bout, they won over a sometimes-skeptical crowd. I heard "this is wrestling" and "this is awesome" chants during the match! Savanna finished with a Samoan Drop in 8:36, but Tootie gave her a tough fight...I'm sure it won't be the last time these two cross paths.
The Big Texan vs. "Da Bomb" Brian James for the Heavyweight Title, falls-count-anywhere match: Texan captured the title from Moondog Rover in January; James defeated Damion Cortess in March to earn this championship opportunity. These two have battled in the past and traded wins, but things were different in the no-DQ environment. Despite the stipulation, the match didn't leave the ring for very long and I don't recall too many weapons coming into play. Texan has been attempting to diversify his offense, but he doesn't really NEED to do a whole lot more than overpower his opponents...sometimes this can backfire and it happened here. When Texan climbed the turnbuckles for an attempted aerial move, James was able to powerbomb him down to the mat, scoring the surprise win in 9:36 to recapture the MMWA Heavyweight Title!
After the 50/50 drawing (once of these days I'll win a 50/50 raffle...I entered the one in Millstadt when the prize was a few hundred dollars), we got our extra bonus match...
Khayman(w/ Frodo "The Ghost" Meyer & Abigail) vs. The Snitch(w/ "The Caramel Bear" C.J. Shine): Of course this extended from the night's opener when the tag team partners did battle. Khayman seems to work in a rulebreaking style despite being a fan favorite, but I think the team wearing the "HEEL" T-shirts had license on that position in the two matches for the evening. Both cornermen got involved and Frodo was able to hit his wheelbarrow DDT behind the referee's back. Khayman capitalized by locking on the Fujiwara armbar for the tapout in 9:09...thank you and good night!
Once again, I'm behind on my commentaries. Life has gotten busy lately...also, the local scene has blown up with news and drama in the past few weeks. It's getting increasingly difficult to figure out what CAN be said without raising the ire of some thin-skinned individuals. Unfortunately that's the nature of the business and isn't likely to ever change. I'd rather each promotion focus on its own matters and let the fans and their ticket money decide who's doing things "right" or "wrong"...but other people prefer to cling to old grudges from 10-15 years ago. Oh well.
Upcoming commentaries: Wrestling Over Everything from Sunday the 15th in Centreville, IL; Dynamo Pro Wrestling from last night in St. Louis, MO.
The next few weeks look like this:
-Saturday 4/28: Pro Wrestling Championship Series in Alton, IL
-Friday 5/4: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in Glen Carbon, IL
-Saturday 5/5: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in St. Louis, MO(afternoon/Cinco De Mayo Festival); World League Wrestling in Troy, MO(evening);
-Sunday 5/6: Glory Pro Wrestling in Collinsville, IL
-Saturday 5/12: MMWA in St. Louis, MO
-Saturday 5/19: Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in East Carondelet, IL
-Sunday 5/20: Glory Pro/Resurgence in Swansea, IL; Wrestling Over Everything in Centreville, IL
That's my special comment for this, the twenty-first wrestling show I've attended in the year 2018. Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

SICW Special Comment
Now, as promised, a special comment about the Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling show on Saturday, April 7th at the St. James Parish Center in Millstadt, Illinois.
DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.
I touched on the National Wrasslin' League/St. Louis Anarchy situation in my previous commentary...it sounds like we'll find out more information at the Pro Wrestling Championship Series event on the 28th when Pierre Abernathy(aka Matt Jackson) addresses the fans. I'm sure everyone has their own views on how things went down in the past year and a half, but I just hope that the talented men and women of the Midwest rasslin scene can continue to thrive and make their mark. There are a lot of different places to work within this immediate area and sometimes you just have to look for your best fit. NWL was definitely a stronger presence in the Kansas City area and I hope that the competitors who live in that region can find a solid home base to ply their proverbial trade. (It appears that Metro Pro is restarting, so there you have it!)
Dialing back to WrestleMania weekend, many wrestling fans were binging on the smorgasbord of show options in New Orleans, Louisiana and the surrounding areas. As for my neck of the woods, there was the longer drive to Zero-One USA and there was a relatively short jaunt to Millstadt for SICW's fundraiser. I crossed paths with a high school classmate while I was there...small world.
Alex Pelman(?) sang the National Anthem and promoter Herb Simmons acknowledged the show's sponsors to kick things off...
Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus; your referees were Jay King, Shaft, and Nick Ridenour.
"Your Canadian Hero" Sean Vincent vs. Bobby D: This was a battle of fan favorites, though Bobby D seemed to have a slight edge in popularity. That didn't stop Vincent from pulling out all the stops, including a suicide dive and a moonsault off the second rope! (Nice to have more ceiling room for aerial moves...) D gave him a good fight, scoring a close near-fall after a sunset flip/powerbomb from the turnbuckles...but Vincent put him away with the Death Valley Driver in 6:46.
Moondog Rover vs. Jake Law: It was my first time seeing Law, who is a regular for USA Championship Wrestling in Tennessee. With the fan support almost always in the Moondog's corner, any opponent has an uphill battle ahead of them...add Rover's unorthodox tactics to the equation and Law had a long night on the agenda. Law was able to use some high-risk maneuvers to gain an advantage for a short time, but a missed moonsault led to Moondog winning with the front powerslam in 8:14. Hope to see Law back again sometime!
Manager Travis Cook claimed that King Christopher Hargas was unable to appear due to injury, thus cancelling the scheduled main event between Hargas and the returning "King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz. Cruz took this bit of information to mean that no one was standing between him and a potential beating to be dished out on the loud-mouthed manager...but Cook had some backup on his side in the form of the former Bubba Troll, now calling himself Kowalski. Kowalski blindsided Cruz and the two brawled around the ring area before order was restored...Herb ordered Cruz vs. Kowalski for later in the night, saying that Cruz would get Travis Cook in the ring for five minutes if he won. All righty then.
Billy McNeil vs. Shawn Santel(w/ Mauler McDarby): McNeil and Sean Vincent fought The Professionals to a time-limit draw in East Carondelet, so Billy was looking for payback as the duo had attempted to injure his shoulder in that bout. Santel tried to keep him grounded by working on his back...and McDarby wasn't shy about getting in a cheapshot or two. Billy fought back and went to the top rope, but missed a Spiral Tap(!) and Santel locked on the Sharpshooter...McNeil was somehow able to fight out of the hold and even get Santel in a Sharpshooter of his own, but the time limit expired in 10:00. There will be another day for these two sides...
Intermission~! Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm): Sprite, hot dog, Coca-Cola.
Keith Smith Jr. vs. Mauler McDarby(w/ Shawn Santel): Keith Jr. had defeated both Professionals in singles bouts in the past, but Santel and McDarby aren't the types to handle losses all that well. Despite Santel's presence(and involvement) at ringside, Keith Jr. won a competitive matchup with the top-rope splash in 8:17.
"Ironman" Ken Kasa & "The Wrestling Machine" Dave Vaughn vs. Guerrilla Warfare(The Big Texan & Waco): Two cohesive tag team combinations went to war here...while Kasa & Vaughn hadn't teamed in a while, they were once the top contenders to the Dynamo Pro Tag Team Titles. Kasa & Vaughn dusted off their old teamwork to control the early minutes of the matchup, but the masked Texans turned things around and isolated Vaughn. Kasa finally tagged back into the fray and cleaned house along with Vaughn, ending with Kasa Irish-whipping Vaughn into a spear on Texan. However, the referee got occupied with escorting Kasa out of the ring and Waco broke up the pin cover with a loaded-mask diving headbutt! Once the official's attention was back on the legal men, Texan had Vaughn covered for the three-count in 12:58.
"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson vs. "Volatile" Curtis Wylde(w/ Wyldefyre): This rivalry goes back a few years in SICW...when you get two guys together who are never at a loss for words, egos are going to clash. After a solid bout, the fight spilled out of the ring and Wyldefyre attempted to get involved, but she accidentally hit her own man and Jackson beat the ten-count for the win in 11:36. Naturally, this didn't satisfy either man and a rematch was set up for April 21st...
Intermission numero dos~! Not much else to say here, honestly...especially since a lot of wrestling people aren't fond of marks who don't fall in line.
"The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz vs. Kowalski(w/ Travis Cook): As one might expect, the two started brawling on the floor before the opening bell could even be rung...they took the full tour of the gymnasium before making it into the ring. It didn't get much more scientific once the bout officially began; Travis Cook got involved in an attempt to save his own neck, as you might expect. While he was risking a disqualification, things worked out in Cook's favor on this night as Cruz was disqualified in 4:17 for hitting Kowalski with a chain that Cook had passed into the ring. Of course the hostilities weren't quite over yet as the fight continued...Travis called in some old backup in the form of The Professionals to tilt the odds in his favor even more. Thankfully Ricky got help from Keith Smith Jr. as well as Ken Kasa and Dave Vaughn...once order was restored, a tag match was set up for the 21st with Cruz & Smith joining forces against The Professionals!
This show had a strong turnout and also set up several matches for the next show...always a plus. April continued to be a busy month with two shows this past weekend, but those are other stories for another time...so tune in next time: Same Pat-Time, Same Pat-Channel!
Next Saturday has three shows in the area: Dynamo Pro Wrestling returns to Concordia Turners Gymnasium in St. Louis, MO. SICW has an event at its home base in East Carondelet, IL. In an interesting addition to the calendar, Rampage Championship Wrestling(which usually runs further north in Illinois) has a show in Pontoon Beach, IL.
That's my special comment for this, the twentieth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2018. Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.
