Comedy Part 551: Hey Guys, I'm Running Out Of Wacky Blog Titles
Location: Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee: Gary Schultz
After: Barry Pultman
Before: Joe "The Animal" Lancey
With fewer comics on the lineup, I did a ten-minute set at Wednesday's open-mic night. It's a good confidence-booster to do longer performances...I really want to figure out my ceiling as far as set length goes. The longest set I've ever done was around twelve minutes and I've added a lot of new material since that time...if I pace myself well, I could probably get to fifteen with no problems. I won't know if I can do a twenty-plus-minute set until I actually do it, I suppose. My main problem is remembering all the material that would go into a performance of that length, which is why I want to write more extended bits as opposed to one-liners. My current project is a bit of that nature and I want to see how much I can add to it for the sake of sheer audacity (given the subject matter). At any rate...onward.

Anarchy Wrestling TV #472
-Commentators: Brett Wolverton & John "The Body" Johnson.
-Shadow Jackson d. "P-Dog" Mike Posey(w/ C.B. Suave) by DQ; Suave pulled the referee out of the ring as Shadow had P-Dog pinned after a Stone Cold Stunner (8:33 aired). Suave punched referee D.A. Brewer and P-Dog shoved him down...but Brewer fired up and fought off Suave and P-Dog.
-"The Encore" Kevin Blue won a four-corner match with Jacob Ashworth, "The Violence Artist" Trever Aeon, and El Gran Laredo; Lars Manderson pulled Ashworth out of the ring as he had Laredo pinned after an inverted swinging neckbreaker, leading to Blue covering Laredo for the pin (13:40 aired). Blue earned a title shot with his win and decided to challenge Corey Hollis for his T.V. Title.
-John Johnson brought out "The Technician" Todd Sexton...Sexton talked about how injuries have caught up to him and he'll have to retire as a result. However, the fans' heckling got to him and he yelled that he's NOT afraid of "Hit For Hire" Bobby Moore...he called Moore to the ring and said they were even after Moore cost him the T.V. Title. Sexton offered a handshake, but Moore nailed him and beat him up at ringside. Johnson tried to help but Sexton accidentally hit his manager, so Moore continued the attack until referees arrived in an attempt to restore order. Security guards had to intervene to keep them separated...and Moore challenged Sexton to a Valentine's Day Massacre street fight.

SICW Special Comment
Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling show at the Community Center in East Carondelet, Illinois.
DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.
The weather forecast wasn't looking too sunny heading into the weekend. Fortunately, the worst of it didn't hit the Metro East as it was 40 degrees and clear for most of Saturday. Unfortunately, it did affect the status of the special guest as James J. Dillon's flight was cancelled due to weather issues. Promoter Herb Simmons posted the info on his Facebook that afternoon...I appreciate his honesty in that regard. (He did the same thing with Marty Jannetty's no-show.) The attendance was a bit lower than usual but filled out to be a decent crowd.
Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus; your referees were Denny Thomas & Terry Riley.
Morgan sang the National Anthem again...good job.
Herb Simmons started the show by letting the fans know about J.J. Dillon's absence, offering refunds to anyone who wanted them. I didn't see any takers.
"The Don Mega" Shorty Biggs vs. "Dead Sexy" Daniel Gunner: I wanted to make the joke about how one of these guys might just win a match, but it would have been ill-timed since Gunner won in January (beating Keith Smith Jr.). Fine opener for what it was; the referee caught Gunner trying to use the ropes for illegal leverage at one point. Shorty went on to win via clean rollup in 10:05...it was a popular finish for the night, as you'll see.
Keith Smith Jr. vs. Waco: This was Keith Jr.'s second singles match after losing his one-on-one debut against Gunner. Keith has definitely been emulating his father's style with the technical game and the chops. However, shenanigans led to the finish as Waco won with a rollup(second of the night) and a pull of the tights right in the TV camera's view...have fun editing that, guys. Anywho, the masked man walked away with the cheap win in 6:12...this was the second time Keith Jr. had fallen victim to underhanded tactics. Will that sway his sense of fair play in the near future?
"Your Canadian Hero" Sean Vincent vs. "Ironman" Ken Kasa(w/ Travis Cook): Don't think these guys had crossed paths since the GCW days...back then it would have been "Slim Sexy" vs. Ian Storm and the face/heel roles would have been reversed. Vincent hasn't been taking it easy since his return as he's had a few lengthy matches, including the time-limit draw with Brandon Espinosa. I thought they had a pretty good matchup here; Travis got in a cheapshot with his cane behind the referee's back, allowing Kasa to get the screwy victory in 12:28.
Cue intermission~! Side note: Espy worked the Ring Of Honor show in Georgia this past weekend; he was one of the notable absences from the SICW card, others being Daniel Eads and Ax Allwardt.
Ron Powers vs. Bubba Troll: Didn't expect a technical classic here, obviously. Powers seemed to play by his own rules as he destroyed Troll with a chair outside the ring...this was in full view of the referee without a disqualification being called. Not a big deal, just a question of consistent officiating (especially after his match with Attila Khan last month). Powers finished the job in short order after that beatdown, winning with a legdrop off the second rope in 3:44.
Big Jim Hoffarth vs. "The Icon" Chris Hargas(w/ Travis Cook): We got a double surprise here...not just Hargas' return to action after a long layoff, but also his new alignment with the Travis Cook Organization. He's a soft-spoken guy, so having a mouthpiece will probably do him some good. I wasn't sure how this one would turn out, but Hargas won via rollup(number three on the night) with feet on the ropes for illegal leverage in 5:12.
"The Old School Warrior" Chaz Wesson vs. "Wildchild" Curtis Wylde(w/ Wyldefyre): The effects of Wesson's chops were somewhat blunted by Wylde's shirt. Wyldefyre wasn't shy about getting involved on more than one occasion. The ending was oddly weak as she got into the ring to bodily shield her man from Wesson's chops...that somehow drew a DQ in 8:51 despite no contact being made with Wylde's opponent. Chaz got his hands on Wyldefyre and threatened to hit her, but settled for a quick swat on the backside to send her on her way. I suspect that issue isn't settled.
Cue intermission numero dos. Side note: I was made aware that Jayden Fenix(the new third member of the Black Hand Warriors) is the artist known as Jamell Harris in World League Wrestling.
Flash Flanagan vs. "Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson(w/ Big Daddy) for the Classic Title: This was announced as Gary's last shot at the title...they didn't specify if it was his last shot at Flash or his last shot at the belt, period. It seemed like an odd stipulation considering this was his first match against Flanagan while Flash was champion; if Flash had screwed him over previously and refused to grant him a rematch until Gary made that concession, then it might have been a bit more logical. They had crossed paths a few times in tag matches and traded pinfall victories, but I'm pretty sure this was their first one-on-one encounter. Gary brought out the GLADIATOR HELMET~! for the big occasion...only Gary could get away with some of the ring attire choices that Gary makes, and I mean that in the best possible way. Solid bout between these two, as expected...Flanagan couldn't put Gary away so he went for his kendo stick. Big Daddy protested and drew the champion's attention, giving Jackson the opening to roll up Flanagan for the three-count(fourth rollup of the night) and win the Classic Title in 13:02!
A big celebration ensued as the face locker room emptied to congratulate the new titleholder...it had been a little while since Gary had held a championship(his last being the MMWA Heavyweight Title). Gary reminded us of THE RULES~! before taking his leave...Flash blew his top and refused to leave the ring until Herb called some of East Carondelet's finest law enforcement officers to ringside to escort him to the exit.
Red River Jack(w/ Big Daddy) vs. Attila Khan(w/ Travis Cook): Interesting choice of a main event...the title match hasn't gone on last in the past few shows. This was another match that I didn't expect to go long or be a high-flying affair...Khan played hide-the-international-object for most of it. Having learned a bit about Khan's past, I have to tip my Wayne's World cap in respect to how completely the man reinvented himself. Jack hit his Double-R-J(Diamond Cutter) finisher but Kasa & Hargas manhandled Big Daddy at ringside and handcuffed him to the ringpost, then rushed the ring for the DQ in about 3:32. (Drew admittedly didn't get the precise time, but that sounds about right.) The heels choked out RRJ with a rope and held him against the ropes, leading to Travis calling out "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz for the honor of unmasking the man they believe to be Ron Powers. Ricky nearly got the mask completely off...but then turned around and attacked Kasa and Hargas! What's Spanish for "Ladies and gentlemen, we have a face turn"? Ricky even got in a shot on Travis before the heels took their leave...

The weather affected other parts of the wrestling world this weekend...World League Wrestling cancelled their show in Troy, MO due to ice on their parking lot. The show was put off until next Friday...so I may finally be able to attend a WLW show. Woo.
World Powerhouse Wrestling had their second show on Saturday in Collinsville, IL. The event raised a bit of a firestorm on my Facebook page over the potential quality of the show...I should probably leave it at that. I wasn't there so I can't personally judge, but I'll try to watch whatever video of the event that I can find. Comments are anonymous on my blogs, so chime in if you wish. It sounds like they had a decent enough attendance number.
Next few weeks look like this:
-Friday 2/27: WLW in Troy, MO
-Saturday 3/7: Dynamo in Fenton, MO; PWE in Pontoon Beach, IL
-Saturday 3/14: PWCS in Granite City, IL; MMWA in St. Louis, MO
-Saturday 3/21: SICW in East Carondelet, IL (Nikolai Volkoff appearing)
Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.
P.S. We are all marks.

Comedy Part 550: First Time At Jacobsmeyer's
Location: Jacobsmeyer's Tavern
Emcee: H.D. Reeves
After: Darin Duffin
Before: Josh Miller
Darin asked me to perform at this bar show in Granite City; I'd heard of shows at the venue in the past but hadn't been to one until now. One of my cousins lives in the area but I didn't think to text him about it until the last minute...maybe next time. I went up early and had a good time with my set...I'm still working on remembering all the tags for my newest extended bit. The show also featured Greg McClintock, Kathy Zeman, Aaron Brooks, and Ben Flug...good times.

Anarchy Wrestling TV #471
-Commentators: Brett Wolverton & John "The Body" Johnson.
-Jerry Palmer introduced Heavyweight Champion "Wild" Billy Buck to start the show...Buck vowed to be a fighting champion and that caught the attention of B.J. Hancock and Miss Rachael. She claimed that Buck's win over Hancock was a fluke and demanded that B.J. get his rematch for the title...next out was Agent/Attorney Jeff G. Bailey who took exception to Miss Rachael's high opinion of herself. He said that if The Elite wanted to focus on the belt, they would get it...but the next man to enter the ring was another former champion: Mikael Judas. Judas challenged Hancock to fight him for the next title shot...that set up the main event.
-Jeremy Foster d. Lars Manderson(w/ Miss Rachael) to retain the Young Lions' Title; Jacob Ashworth distracted Manderson and Foster took advantage with a flying knee strike for the win (12:17 aired).
-"The Priest Of Punishment" Mikael Judas d. "The Modern Classic" B.J. Hancock(w/ Miss Rachael); Heavyweight Champion Billy Buck did commentary and Jeff G. Bailey came out to watch the match. The referee was knocked down and Rachael threw powder in Judas' eyes, but Bailey pushed Rachael into Judas who blindly delivered a chokeslam! Hancock delivered a piledriver and Lars Manderson pulled his manager to safety as the referee recovered to count...two. Judas avoided a top-rope kneedrop and got the win with El Crucifijo(Border Toss-style powerbomb) (11:52 aired). Buck congratulated Judas and the two shook hands...Judas raised Buck's hand with the title belt between them. Hancock shoved Judas into Buck as their backs were turned...sparking tension between the two.

HRW Special Comment
Now, as promised, a special comment about Sunday's High Risk Wrestling show at the Belle-Clair Fairgrounds in Belleville, IL.
DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.
Not the best turnout for HRW, sorry to say. The talent list for the show may not have been on the same level as that of previous events (with the same ticket price). On top of that, the weather forecast called for a lot of snow last night, so people may have been paranoid about driving. On the bright side, the people in attendance were enthusiastic for most of the show.
Your ring announcer was Brian Thompson and your video cmmentators were Brian Thompson and Steve Murphy. Your referees were Brian Stoltz, Nick Ridenour, and Jason Pemberton.
Keon Option vs. Curt Stallion: Stallion is a trainee of Michael Elgin; he teamed with Brandon Espinosa in a recent dark match for Ring Of Honor. This preshow match was essentially face-vs.-face...Stallion had some good mid-match quips about how well he was or wasn't doing. Option won with an axe kick in 7:18.
Mike Outlaw vs. Justin D'Air vs. "The Bosnian Warchild" Spi-Ral: This was the "Fans' Choice Match" where the fans' post-match response would determine each man's future in the promotion. Outlaw and D'Air have wrestled each other a few times in the past, but I don't think either of them had worked with Spi-Ral before. This was fine for what it was...Spi-Ral was taken out of the game long enough for Outlaw to finish D'Air with the High Noon(top-rope elbowdrop) in 4:15. It seemed like Outlaw got the best post-match response while Spi-Ral and D'Air got mixed reactions...but no decision was announced.
Trevor Murdoch vs. "The Obsession" Caleb Konley vs. Blake Edward Belakis, three-way dance: This was an elimination-style match, something that wasn't made clear in the introductions. I hadn't seen Murdoch in several years; he hasn't been as active recently but isn't fully retired. He got his start in the St. Louis area as Trevor Rhodes, primarily working for Harley Race's World League Wrestling. I had seen Konley a few times on NWA Anarchy TV(several years ago), but he's progressed since that time, becoming one-half of the Open The United Gate Champions with Anthony Nese in Dragon Gate USA. Always cool to see Belakis. This match was also unusual in the sense that only two men were legal at once and you had to tag in and out of the match. Konley and Belakis worked together against Murdoch for most of the bout, but that alliance inevitably broke down. Murdoch pinned Konley with his Code Red variation in 8:02...but Belakis blindsided Murdoch with a forearm smash and immediately covered him for the final win in 8:07.
The Bravado Brothers(Harlem & Lancelot)(w/ Magic Man) vs. The New Midnight Express(Bad Brad Charles & Tenacious Tyler Cook)(w/ Beautiful Bobby Eaton & Moose): I hadn't seen the Bravados since their Ring Of Honor days. They used to look similar, but nowadays Harlem has a shaved head and beard in contrast to Lancelot's clean-cut appearance. They had a lengthy reign as DGUSA Open The United Gate Champions until dropping the belts to Nese & Konley. This was a solid tag match with the New Midnights doing a good job of cutting off the ring on Lancelot. Harlem got a hot tag and cleaned house, but Eaton's distraction allowed Bad Brad to roll him up with a handful of tights in 11:46. Presumably that puts them in line for a Tag Team Title shot...no reDRagon on this night, sorry to say.
"Unbreakable" Michael Elgin vs. "The Last Real Man" Silas Young: Elgin was a surprise replacement for Tony Kozina in the only change to the announced lineup. These two had a really strong match on Ring Of Honor TV that boosted Young's credibility in that promotion. Silas is a tremendous heel...'nuff said. They had a really strong matchup that ended out of nowhere with Young tapping out to the Sharpshooter in 10:42. (EDIT: Kozina was working the TNA One Night Only tapings this past weekend.)
Cue Adam Starr Memorial Not-So-Brief Intermission(tm)...the next HRW show will be on Sunday, April 5th. Hope I can plan that around Easter festivities, such as they are.
Bolt Brady(w/ Magic Man) vs. "The Yoga Monster" Mike Sydal(w/ Bobby Eaton & Moose): This stemmed from Sydal turning on Brady during a tag match against the New Midnights. Eaton & Moose attacked Magic Man midway through the bout, prompting an encore appearance by the Bravados with steel chairs in hand. They prevented any further damage from being done, but that left Brady on his own with Eaton and Moose still at ringside. Sydal tried to slow Bolt down but Brady was able to make a short-lived comeback. A cheapshot by Moose gave Sydal the opening for a rollup-with-tights for the tainted win in 8:08...second finish of that nature on the show, though it was from the same stable so you may be able to chalk that up to some degree of continuity for the group.
Cedric Alexander vs. Jonathan Gresham: Have seen these guys a handful of times at area shows. Not sure why Gresham hasn't appeared more for higher-profile independent promotions...though size still does matter in the wrestling game. First saw Cedric when he entered ROH as the tag team partner of veteran Caprice Coleman...they were a rare case of a tag team splitting amicably and pursuing separate singles careers as fan favorites. These two worked pretty well together and I could see a rematch happening down the line. Gresham targeted the leg to ground Alexander, showing off his technical expertise. I noticed a few instances of referees counting REALLY fast on this show and I'm not sure why...I don't even think it was one official in particular. There was some confusion when Alexander got the win with a Michinoku Driver as Gresham appeared to kick out, but the count was fast and the ref called for the bell. Again, I have no idea what was up with the different pin counts here, but Alexander still walked away with the win in 11:17.
"The Sicilian Psychopath" Tommaso Ciampa vs. Moose: It's a little-known fact that Ciampa wrestled for WLW for a short time in his career...I thought his name looked familiar when he started with Ring Of Honor, especially since "Tommaso" isn't a very common name. Ciampa's done pretty well in ROH despite being derailed by a major injury...he held the T.V. Title and has a Heavyweight Title shot at the next iPPV. Reportedly Moose is already on WWE's radar and that's not too surprising...great size, physique, and agility for a guy of his size. If I'm not mistaken, he's still undefeated in ROH. It wasn't stated outright until after the match, but this main event was supposed to set up a future challenger for A.C.H.'s championship...notably, this was the first HRW show that A.C.H. had missed.
This wasn't a technical masterpiece...it wasn't supposed to be and it wasn't expected to be. It was two big guys slugging it out...despite his limited experience, Moose has looked really good so far. Referee Stoltz was bumped by accident and Moose speared Ciampa...Jason Pemberton apparently tripped on his way to the ring(so I was told) but still got to the ring to count the near-fall. Moose quickly disposed of referee number two and brought in a chair, but Ciampa sidestepped a spear and Moose hit the chair. Ciampa rolled up Moose and Nick Ridenour hit the ring to count...two. Ciampa beat HIM up and Pemberton recovered to call for the bell in 12:49, calling it a no-contest on account of attempted reficide. The New Midnights and Sydal hit the ring but didn't do any further damage; they just stood by Moose as everyone sorted things out. Ciampa demanded a restart but the heels backed off...so Tommaso took out his aggression on Stoltz with repeated Panic Attacks in the corner. Ouchie.
As previously noted, the next show is in April with Murdoch vs. Silas already announced...several names from this show will be back for that event as well.
Next Saturday will be very busy around here with three shows that evening: SICW in East Carondelet with James J. Dillon appearing, WLW in Troy MO, and World Powerhouse Wrestling in Collinsville. Choose your destiny, as it were...
Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.
P.S. We are all marks.

Moose threw the second ref out of the ring and brought in a chair, but Ciampa sidestepped a second spear attempt and Moose hit the chair. Ciampa rolled up Moose and a third referee ran in to count...two. Ciampa laid out the third referee, leading to one of the other officials calling for the bell and throwing the match out (12:49). The New Midnights & Sydal came out to back up Moose, but they declined Ciampa's desire for a restart...so Ciampa took out his aggression on one of the remaining officials.

-Attila Khan(w/ Travis Cook) d. Ron Powers by DQ. It didn't take long for the match to get out of hand as the fight spilled out of the ring and Powers bashed Khan with a chair. They brawled to the backstage area and Powers choked Khan with a rope before the referee finally restored some level of order. Khan repeatedly used a foreign object to attack Powers, passing it back and forth to Travis Cook to keep the referee from finding it. However, Powers finally got a hold of the weapon and blatantly attacked Khan with it, leading to the referee calling for the disqualification.

Comedy Parts 547-8: Hey Guys, I Have Valentine's Day Plans
Location: Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee: Me
Feature: Dan Deibert
Headliner: Mike Mercury
I attended the Friday night show at Hey Guys Comedy and Bruce Veach asked if I could host on Saturday...shockingly, I had no plans for the Valentine's Day. The 8:00 show was preceded by a holiday dinner and had one of the biggest crowds in the club's history...by contrast, the 10:00 show had a decidedly smaller audience. We had a lot of fun and it's always cool to get an opportunity to perform on weekend shows. Good times. P.S. I got to take home the leftover breadsticks from the Valentine's Day dinner...so hey, bonus. :-D

-Kurt Angle thanked Heavyweight Champion Bobby Lashley for his assist in Lethal Lockdown, but then challenged him to a title match. That brought out the Beat Down Clan(Montel Vontavious Porter, X-Division Champion Low-Ki, Samoa Joe, & Kenny King) to protest...that set up a tag team match for the main event.
-Bobby Roode d. Austin Aries with the Crippler Crossface (8:19). With Roode at #1 and Aries at #3 in the Impact Top 5 rankings, the match would decide positions in the following week's twenty-man gauntlet battle royal. The final five slots would be filled by the holders of the Top 5 spots (#1 would get #20 in the gauntlet, #2 would get #19, etc.). Roode challenged Lashley after the match, but he was attacked by Eric Young who laid him out with the piledriver. Referees and security tried to assist Roode to the backstage area, but Young attacked again and piledrove him on the entrance ramp.
-Al Snow(one of the trainers on British Boot Camp) spoke to the fans and trashed Boot Camp contestant Grado...he called Grado to the ring to set up a match on next week's show. Snow talked to Grado's mom(who was sitting in the front row)...she slapped him and Grado stuck up for his family.
-Bram Cameron d. Crazzy Steve after an elevated DDT (2:19).

The American Wolves(Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards) made the save before more damage could be done.
-Montel Vontavious Porter & Samoa Joe(w/ X-Division Champion Low-Ki & Kenny King) d. Heavyweight Champion Bobby Lashley & Kurt Angle; a miscommunication between Lashley and Angle led to M.V.P. rolling up Lashley with a handful of tights (10:07).
