Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Dynamo Pro Wrestling show at the Stratford Inn in Fenton, Missouri.
DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.
The first three weekends of March are slated to be very busy with two area shows on each Saturday night. All choices are good in this case and it sounds like Pro Wrestling Epic had a strong show in Pontoon Beach, IL. From what I understand, they have a show in East St. Louis, IL on Friday the 27th and I'm planning to attend that show.
Your ring announcer was Chris Roedel; your referees were Patrick Hook and Richard White.
"Young & Dangerous" Evan Morris vs. "The Alternative" Ozzie Gallagher: In a YouTube clip released by Dynamo, Morris and "The New Hotness" Danny Adams agreed to go their separate ways...and then Adams attacked Morris from behind, effectively turning Morris face. Adams wasn't in the building on this night, but I'm sure that issue will be settled down the line. Morris missed a swanton bomb and Gallagher hit an inverted DDT for the pinfall with feet on the ropes for illegal leverage in 6:47...but Keon Option told the referee what Gallagher had done and the match was restarted. Morris immediately rolled up Gallagher for the flash pin in 6:52 total time...Gallagher's woes continue.
Executive Director Mark Bland brought out Heavyweight Champion Mike Outlaw and Ricky Cruz to set up the main event. Cruz said that he had more respect for Outlaw after their December encounter, but he still planned on regaining his title. Outlaw said he was ready for the fight and they shook hands...but Outlaw slapped Ricky in the face, saying they were now even (since Ricky had slapped him before their December match). Nice way to heat up the face-vs.-face battle.
The Mathmagician vs. Draco Verdadero: Had heard of Mathmagician but this was my first time seeing him in action(more or less)...had only seen Draco in MMWA previously. This only went 0:47 before Attila Khan attacked both men for the no-contest...Cruz ran in with a (plastic) chair to make the save, but Khan shrugged off the attack and it took the full force of referees and security to restore order.
Justin D'Air vs. "The Filipino Warrior" Elvis Aliaga(w/ Lucy Mendez): Impressive showing for D'Air, who gets some great hangtime on his aerial moves. He even teased a table spot in the early going as he set up Aliaga on the timekeeper's table and went to the top rope...unfortunately Lucy stood in the way to prevent that from happening. D'Air went for a springboard move to finish, but Lucy grabbed his foot and Aliaga brought him back into the ring with the T.C.B.(Falcon Arrow) for the win in 11:35.
Keon Option vs. "Walking Reality" Dan Walsh: I am NOT typing out ALL of Dan's nicknames. He's definitely a heel nowadays and Option has become a big crowd favorite. Option scored his first win at last month's show against Gallagher(after previously losing to him), thus his involvement with Gallagher earlier in this show. Unfortunately, Gallagher took the opportunity to get him back here...he distracted the referee at a point when Option had Walsh covered after an axe kick. That allowed Walsh to capitalize with a rollup and handful of tights(moon over Fenton...) for the cheap win in 8:27. Never thought I'd see the day when Walsh and Gallagher would be on the same side. The biggest news item of the week in Midwest wrestling: DAN WALSH WON A MATCH IN MISSOURI~! MY GOD~! (Nod to Ben Simon and the MWR Missouri rankings...) Anywho, Option said it wasn't over between him and Gallagher, challenging him to a match at next month's show.
The Bumrush Brothers("The Don Mega" Shorty Biggs & Outtkast) vs. High Level Enterprise(Jack Gamble & Jon Webb): This was a battle of fan-favorite teams to determine who would be next in line for a shot at the Black Hand Warriors. Shorty & Outtkast are multi-time former champions but Gamble & Webb have yet to hold the gold in Dynamo (they are the current WLW Tag Champs). They had a solid match with a lot of near-falls in the finishing stretch...Gamble hit Outtkast with an inverted suplex and Webb followed with a basement dropkick, pinning Outtkast for the win in 14:05. I'd call that a slight upset...don't know if/when HLE will get their title shot, but they'll be leaving for Pro Wrestling Noah in Japan soon...
Cue intermission~! Stratford's cheese fries are tremendous.
Mark Bland had another talking segment with Travis Cook and Alexander P. Dixon, Esquire...had to read my previous commentary to remember the lawyer's name. Travis' main role was to bring out his newest acquisition: Jake Dirden.
Jackal vs. "Dirdey" Jake Dirden(w/ Travis Cook, The Black Hand Warriors, & Alexander P. Dixon, Esquire): The outside parties were quickly ejected when the referee caught them interfering on the arena floor. Dirden dominated a lot of the match while Jackal stayed competitive just by surviving the assault. Jackal got off a few big moves and pin combos for near-falls and even escaped the setup for the Asiatic Spike, but Dirden finally caught him with the hold...the referee called for the bell after three arm drops in 15:34(!). Dirden enlightened the fans...he felt like he had been forgotten in the Heavyweight Title picture and he was going after HIS championship. For his part, Jackal called Dirden back to the ring and said he never tapped out...so he wanted an I Quit Match. All righty then.
"The Yoga Monster" Mike Sydal vs. Brandon Espinosa(w/ Lucy Mendez): There is not a word in English or Spanish to describe how far out of my league Lucy Mendez is...ahem. These guys are familiar with each other as former tag partners(in Babewatch/Glamour Inc. with Brandon Aarons). They had a good matchup and Lucy's presence played dividends once again...her distraction allowed Espy to cut off a potential Yogasault, then finish with the brainbuster in 10:50.
Guns & Beer(Bo Gott, Duke Cornell, & "JoeDozer" Joey Anderson)(w/ Miss Nikki Paris) vs. Tag Team Champions The Black Hand Warriors(Michael Magnuson, Dave DeLorean, & Jayden Fenix)(w/ Travis Cook): Guns & Beer had been scheduled to face Dirden & Jackal for the Tag Titles at last month's show, but Travis' legal proceedings led to the Black Hand Warriors getting a three-on-two title shot and winning the belts. I had only seen Nikki on 3XW's YouTube show in a different role as Ravishing Ryan Slade's valet. I went in cold on all three of the G&B trio so it was tough to gauge them individually...especially since I wasn't sure who was who. It was an entertaining six-man tag, though the show was running long and the fans were a bit burned out by this point in the evening. The BHWs are reaching Young Bucks territory in their elaborate finishing sequences...Magnuson and DeLorean picked up Gott and Anderson in Tombstones and Fenix did a double stomp from the top rope to add the "spike" to both moves! That led to Fenix pinning Anderson for the win in 16:34.
Mike Outlaw vs. "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz for the Heavyweight Title: The rookie Outlaw earned a title shot in a gauntlet-style six-way dance, then scored the shocking upset over the veteran Cruz in December. Since then, Outlaw has retained the title against Ken Kasa and Brandon Espinosa, but this was his chance to prove that lightning could strike twice. Of course, Ricky wasn't taking things lightly and they had a good competitive matchup, as you'd expect. Cruz seemed to be in control as he cut off the High Noon(top-rope elbowdrop) and set up for a hanging DDT...but Espinosa ran in for the DQ in 10:53. BOO~! Attila Khan joined in the post-match chaos(looking for revenge on Cruz for getting involved in his business)...Outlaw brought in a chair but it didn't have much effect on Khan. However, Outlaw and Cruz finally cleared the ring to stand tall at the end of the night...the show ended around 11:15 or so.
-----
Thanks to Ben Simon for providing the PWE results...the tournament had to be shuffled a bit as Paco Gonzalez and Tony Kozina were absent and Evan Morris was at Dynamo. LaMarcus Clinton was switched out of the tournament and into a match with Barackus; the tournament substitutions were Laurence Johnson, Curt Stallion, Everett Connors, and Steven Kennedy. Billy McNeil, Danny Adams, Leone Mephisto, and Brandon Aarons(in that order) advanced to the finals with Aarons pinning Mephisto for the final win to capture the Heavyweight Title.
Shoutout to 3XW in Iowa...have heard nothing but good things about their promotion and I've been following their YouTube show. Unfortunately they suffered a setback on Friday as their ticket money was reportedly stolen...hopefully the thief or thieves will be brought to justice.
The rest of March looks like this:
-Saturday 3/14: PWCS in Granite City, IL; MMWA in St. Louis, MO
-Saturday 3/21: SICW in East Carondelet, IL; WLW in Troy, MO
-Friday 3/27: PWE in East St. Louis, IL
Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.
P.S. We are all marks.
