CHIKARA Special Comment (Part 4)
Now, as promised, a special comment about Sunday's CHIKARA show at the King Arts Complex in Columbus, Ohio.
DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.
The final segment of our odyssey had a more leisurely pace...we even got a bit more sleep than we had in previous hotel stays. All things considered, that probably did some of us some good...speaking for myself, I was getting worn out from the long trip. Kudos to Michael for doing all of the driving on this excursion.
We met up with Michael's friend Derek at the Tasi Cafe for breakfast; I had a croissant sandwich with orange juice. Unfortunately, I had to change T-shirts since the first bite squirted grease on the one I was wearing...eep. If nothing else, one of the workers at the cafe gave his ringing endorsement to my Wayne's World cap/Decepticon T-shirt ensemble...I switched to a Nintendo-themed shirt for the rest of the day.
Since we had some time to kill before the show, we visited the Big Fun Store and Laughing Ogre Comics...Big Fun had all kinds of vintage toys(Transformers!) and video games(Atari 2600!), among other curiosities. They had more lines of action figures than I knew existed...very impressive. From there, we made a Target run and a Sonic stop-over before heading to our fourth and final rasslin show of the weekend...
Your ring announcer was Alex Proen(?); your referees were Bryce Remsburg & Larry Peace.
Dasher Hatfield vs. Ophidian: The show kicked off with this technico-contra-technico matchup. (All right, we get it, I took high school Spanish...I also took college Spanish.) Both men are team captains in the Challenge Of The Immortals competition, but this match was not part of that series. After a fine wrestling contest, Dasher delivered a superplex and went straight into a Jackhammer(Grand Slam?) for the win in 9:26.
El Hijo Del Ice Cream(Crown & Court) vs. Blind Rage(Nightmare Warriors), Challenge Of The Immortals: This could be classified as an "atypical" matchup. Hijo conversed with a toddler in the crowd, leading to the referee checking with both participants and the child to see if they were ready for the opening bell. This prompted a "Baby" chant from the fans. The actual match started with the good old Test O' Strength...but then they maneuvered through the ropes and continued their lockup on the floor. The two grappled all over the building, through the fans(with Hijo apologizing profusely along the way), and finally out the door of the building! The referee, not wanting to see a double countout, simply tried to corral them back into the ring...and they finally returned to the proverbial squared circle. Shortly thereafter, Hijo pulled off a surprise small pacakge for the flash pin in 5:19...yup, that was the whole match.
Icarus vs. The Proletariat Boar Of Moldova(w/ Prakash Sabar): Icarus dragged the Estonian Thunderhammer to the entrance stage as a reminder that he has it...he can move it around, but only The Estonian Thunderfrog was able to pick it up(a la Thor and Mjolnir). With the somewhat-similar-looking Farmer Frog becoming a regular, I suspect this will be important at some point. (Oh sure, I guess all frogs just look alike to you...) They made a big fuss about the water bottles, leading to a demand that the referee taste-test the water. I wondered if this would lead to the official collapsing and having convulsions or something, but no go (har har). This was a standard David/Goliath bout with Prakash Sabar interfering from the floor...but it finally backfired as Sabar ate a boot from Boar that was meant for Icarus. Icarus capitalized with a Death Valley Driver into the turnbuckles called the Blu-Ray(...since it's better than a "DVD"...), notching the three-count in 8:37. Icarus brought the hammer back with him...I figured he'd leave it on the stage and then Farmer Frog would nonchalantly pick it up at some point...
"Smooth Sailin'" Ashley Remington(Battle Hive) vs. Oleg The Usurper(Arcane Horde), Challenge Of The Immortals: I felt bad for the fans with Dalton Castle T-shirts since they didn't get to see their favorite wrestler...all they got was the very-similar-looking-but-totally-not-the-same-guy Ashley Remington. (It was a pure coincidence that Remington only worked the Sunday CHIKARA show while Dalton Castle was on the Ring Of Honor shows earlier in the weekend.) Despite that, Remington was OVAH...his doppleganger's recent TV exposure has raised his stock in a major way. We were reminded that Remington is enough of a gentleman that HE BREAKS ON ONE~! Oleg didn't quite understand Remington's mannerisms, particularly the finger-gun(HEYYYYY~!). That led to an impromptu duel with finger-guns against pantomimed swords...and Bryce Remsburg had to confiscate all of the invisible weapons. (Ring announcer Alex had trouble carrying Oleg's imaginary-yet-heavy sword. :)) After an entertaining bout, Oleg won with Off With His Head(crossface smash) in 11:31...aww. Mutual respect ensued after the match, but fruit baskets did not. I suspect Dalton Castle's increased ROH exposure may lead to a phasing-out of his smooth-sailing counterpart...
Intermission~! Per request from Billy McNeil, I picked up an Arcane Horde shirt; unfortunately they didn't have a large-sized shirt left so I had to settle for XXL. Billy joked that he'll have to bulk up in a hurry...bwahahaha. Got a CHIKARA cup as a free gift with my merchandise purchase...score.
Princess Kimber Lee(Crown & Court) vs. Jakob Hammermeier(Bruderschaft Des Kreuzes), Challenge Of The Immortals: Given Kimber's strong weekend up to this point, I didn't see Jakob posing much of a threat. Kimber did her pre-match tradition of giving her tiara to a ringside child for safekeeping...so Jakob stole it and pranced around with it, prompting a chant of "He's A Princess". The tiara was returned to the child and Jakob made the kid's father hold his stable's flag...yup, that's how this one started. They had a fine quick intergender match, ending with a pop-up powerbomb(!) by Kimber into the folding press in 3:38.
Eddie Kingston vs. Blaster McMassive: No flippies in this one, it was just Irresistable Force vs. Immovable Object. Both guys threw bombs with the opponent powering through the assault...Kingston withstood two Rainmaker-style short-arm lariats before winning with two spinning backfists in a row in 5:08. He Wants Da Belt(tm).
"Mr. Touchdown" Mark Angelosetti, Young Lions' Champion Heidi Lovelace, & Fire Ant vs. Grand Champion Hallowicked, "The Kentucky Gentleman" Chuck Taylor, & "The Anarchist" Arik Cannon: The premise of this match was that all six participants had held the Young Lions' Cup in their careers. Hallowicked nearly found himself as the lone rudo once again, but Chuck decided to go heel after a weekend of being the fan favorite. He established this by procuring a pair of scissors and popping Touchdown's football...ooh, that means war. At one point Chuck stormed out of the ring, walked out the door, and scared off a group of kids who were watching the show through the window...bwahahaha. (Vintage Chuck Taylor~!)
Hallowicked didn't want to wrestle Heidi, saying she was an unworthy tag team partner the previous night so she was an unworthy opponent as well. Chuck brought up his past history with Fire Ant; they feuded as singles and also in tag team competition as part of Team F.I.S.T. and The Colony (respectively). Cannon was a more reluctant tag team partner as he didn't want to strike Heidi(despite Hallowicked's encouragement to do so); however, this built to a moment when Cannon suddenly planted a kiss on Heidi. She slapped him, so he hauled off and decked her...OW. The high point of the match came when Touchdown hit Hallowicked with his delayed superplex...and Hallowicked's feet hit a hanging light on the ceiling, knocking part of it down onto them! (Check my Twitter for Michael's picture of that.) The end came when Heidi was left alone with Hallowicked...she got a good run of offense, but Hallowicked blatantly gouged her previously-blackened eye and finished her off with the exploder fisherman buster in 22:07. That was quite a battle...
One More Match? One more match...
13-Man Royal Rumble: We weren't sure WHAT kind of match this was...the ring announcer brought out Campeon De Parejas "The Generator" Race Jaxon and Prakash Sabar, so we thought it was just a singles match. However, "Juke Joint" Lucas Calhoun entered after a few minutes, so maybe it was a triple threat (there was a similar delay before Fire Ant's entry at the Chicago Show). Next out was the other half of the Campeones De Parejas Hype Rockwell, then The Proletariat Boar Of Moldova and Missile Assault Man. (I guess it didn't matter whether you had already wrestled or not.) Farmer Frog was the seventh entry; sadly the hammer was nowhere to be found. Darin Corbin was number eight and immediately put the match into SLOW MOTION~!...even the ring announcer got into the act as he slooooowly introduced the next participant. Number nine was a surprise appearance by Mr. Azerbaijan...WOO~! Number ten was Juan Francisco De Coronado who once again took his sweet time...so Ophidian(entry number eleven) blew right past him to enter the ring.
With Ophidian's Osirian Portal teammate Amasis absent, he got an assist from Bryce Remsburg to do his wheelbarrow hypnosis move...that left everyone in the ring in a trance and the dance party began. (Juan was still outside the ring and simply looked aghast at the ongoing events.) Soldier Ant was the party pooper at number twelve and he cleaned house on everyone, breaking them out of their trances...then Dasher Hatfield was final entrant at number thirteen, literally walking over from the merchandise table. Dasher encouraged TEAMWORK~! and they all ganged up on Soldier Ant to throw him out of the ring...then we discovered that this was a battle royal format. Bryce quickly bailed out of the ring to assume the position of battle royal official, so the stage was set.
Calhoun eliminated Race Jaxon, pushing a potential N_R_G vs. Battleborn feud (Battleborn has two points at the moment). Ophidian hung from the turnbuckles and used hypnotism again, causing Missile Assault Man and Mr. Azerbaijan to eliminate themselves. However, Farmer Frog took out a mirror and turned the snake's charm against him, causing Ophidian to eliminate HIMself. (Yes, this all happened.)
Everyone got together for a multiple-suplex spot, but Sabar freaked out when he realized that he had accidentally suplexed his own partner Boar. The brief dissension allowed Frog to use FARMER STRENGTH~! to eliminate the Boar. Calhoun, Farmer Frog, and Corbin all got together to dump Prakash onto his teammate at ringside. Dasher was thrown out, but he kept one foot off the floor and hopped around for a little while. However, he forgot himself for a moment and jumped when a big move happened in the ring, causing his other foot to touch the floor...aww.
Farmer Frog eliminated Hype Rockwell, but Calhoun ELVISED-UP~! and threw out Corbin and Farmer Frog. He thought he had won, but Juan Francisco De Coronado had never entered the ring and finally jumped in for a sneak attack. His advantage was short-lived and he hit the floor in short order, giving Lucas Calhoun the unlikely win in 17:28. Whew!
Our core group(myself, Michael, Lauren, and Will) got together with Derek and another fan(Joe) for dinner at Melt after the show...even with a half-sandwich, I couldn't finish my buffalo chicken selection and had to get a to-go box. The fries probably didn't help in that regard. I had a root beer to drink...in my defense, I did a good job of not overdoing it on the soda for this weekend. (There are your salient junk food details, Ben Simon!)
At any rate, it was time to part ways as Will was riding with Joe from there...it was a long haul down I-70 to return to the greater St. Louis area. I finally arrived back at the house around 1:15 AM...and I really wish I had asked off work for Monday instead of just asking off for Thursday & Friday. After the Langans stuck around the area on Monday to be St. Louis tourists, the final mileage count on the rental car was around 2300 miles...yikes, glad it held up through all of that.
I had to wait until the following afternoon to pick up the dogs from my friend's place...thus ended my legendary CHIKARA excursion. I traveled through several states I had never visited: Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ohio. I went from the Central time zone to Eastern back to Central, severely confusing my cellphone's clock setup. On top of that, I got quite a few travel-planning lessons...food for thought.
Updated Challenge Of The Immortal standings:
1) Dasher's Dugout (12)
2) Crown & Court/Wrecking Crew (11)
3) Nightmare Warriors (9)
4) Arcane Horde (8)
5) Snake Pit/United Nations (7)
6) Bruderschaft Des Kreuzes/Battle Hive/Gentlemen's Club (6)
With Ultramantis Black's seemingly-career-ending knee injury(suffered in Indianapolis in June :( ), the stage has been set for an upcoming eight-man tag match with the Arcane Horde being allowed to choose a substitute for U.M.B. The last two shows before the season finale have some intriguing matchups, including the first-ever Fire Ant vs. Silver Ant matchup...sadly, the Nightmare Warriors have turned Silver Ant to the Dark Side of The Force in recent months.
Records for the weekend(only counting the winner in the Rumble):
4-0: Princess Kimber Lee
2-0: Punk Rock All-Stars, Lucas Calhoun
1-0: Ariya Daivari
3-1: Hallowicked, Icarus, Oleg The Usurper
2-1: Shynron, Soldier Ant, Dasher Hatfield, El Hijo Del Ice Cream, Blind Rage
2-2: Eddie Kingston, Ophidian, Chuck Taylor, Arik Cannon
1-1: Frightmare, Missile Assault Man, Ice Cream Jr.
1-2: N_R_G, Juan Francisco De Coronado, Prakash Sabar, Darin Corbin
1-3: Heidi Lovelace, Mr. Touchdown, Blaster McMassive, Proletariat Boar Of Moldova, Jakob Hammermeier
0-1: Drew Gulak, Ashley Remington, Wildcat, Kody Rice, Venom
0-2: Orange Cassidy
0-3: Fire Ant, Farmer Frog
There are no local wrestling shows this coming weekend due to the Halloween holiday...honestly, I won't mind taking it easy for once.
A really busy November looks like this:
-Friday 11/6: Pro Wrestling Epic in Brownstown, IL; World Powerhouse Wrestling in Jerseyville, IL
-Saturday 11/7: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in Fenton, MO; Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance in St. Louis, MO
-Friday 11/13: St. Louis Anarchy in Alton, IL
-Saturday 11/14: St. Louis Anarchy in Alton, IL; Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in Swansea, IL; World League Wrestling in Troy, MO
-Saturday 11/21: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in Wood River, IL; Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in East Carondelet, IL
-Saturday 11/28: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in St. Louis, MO(Ready Room); Wrestling Invades America in Swansea, IL; World Powerhouse Wrestling in Collinsville, IL
Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

-Saturday 11/28: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in St. Louis, MO(Ready Room); Wrestling Invades America in Swansea, IL; World Powerhouse Wrestling in Collinsville, IL

Comedy Part 617: Halloweenies
Location: Valley Park Funny Bone
Emcee: Charlie Winfrey
After: Brett Barry
Before: Batman(who was totally not Ron Finger)
The show was combined with a costume contest for both the comedians and audience members. We got a decent-sized audience but they were really fickle at times...I felt like my set went okay, but I didn't seem to hear much from the crowd...oh well. Notably, they were looking around for possibilities for a weekend feature set and I was considered as a potential option. I really need to figure out if I'm capable of doing a set of that length...the only way to know is to attempt it.

CHIKARA Special Comment (Part 3)
Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's CHIKARA show at The Arena in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.
After two nights of not-all-that-great hotel sleep, I took the nuclear option of Benadryl and had my best sleep of the weekend. Score. Breakfast was had at the Bongo Room in Chicago; I had pretzel and caramel pancakes, but couldn't quite finish the whole batch...nice problem to have.
From there, it was car time as we drove through Illinois and Indiana to Louisville, Kentucky. We got some supplies at Super Target(!) and also had dinner at Havana Rumba before the show; I had never had Cuban food before. Sadly, my high school and college Spanish courses never really came into play. I had the pollo empanizado(breaded chicken) with black beans & rice and plantains...for the second time that day, I couldn't quite finish my restaurant meal. At the risk of being deemed a bigot, I didn't really care for the black beans & rice... *runs*
It was a rainy evening in southern Indiana and the venue roof was leaking a bit...the ring crew had to regularly clean up the ring between matches. The conditions made the building a rather hot and humid environment, but it was still a good time and they had a fine turnout.
Your ring announcer was Alex Proen(?), who was sounding much better after being raspy for the Chicago event; your referees were Bryce Remsburg & Larry Peace.
Ophidian & Shynron(Snake Pit) vs. Drew Gulak & Orange Cassidy(Gentlemen's Club), Challenge Of The Immortals: This was a battle of technico teams, though the Snake Pit duo seemed to have a slight edge in popularity. Gulak is a serious wrestler amidst the wackiness of CHIKARA; saw him at the merchandise tables at the weekend shows, but this was the only time I saw him in the ring. At one point, the ever-burned-out Cassidy elected to take a nap in the middle of the ring; Gulak even threw him a stuffed tiger toy. Ophidian QUIETLY attempted to pin him while he was asleep(with the referee counting quietly), but Gulak yelled out "FREE BAGEL BITES!" With that, Orange snapped awake and small-packaged Ophidian for a near-fall...bwahahaha. There was also a wacky series of pin attempt reversals that wore out the referee as he tried to keep up with the shoulders and counts. The end came when Orange went for a cheapshot on Ophidian, but the master of "snake style" avoided it and pinned Cassidy with a bridging backslide in 14:01.
Farmer Frog vs. Prakash Sabar: One of these guys might just win~! MY GOD~! The referee checked Sabar(who pretty obviously had some foreign objects on his person) and found two cucumbers...um, okay, sure. The Frog was aghast at this disrespect of farm produce...but Sabar had one more cucumber hidden in his tights(in the BACK, getyermindouttathegutter) and handed it to a young fan in the front row for safekeeping. Anywho, they had a solid wrestling match...at one point Sabar bailed to ringside and attempted to reclaim his cucumber from the kid, but the kid wouldn't give it to him! A frustrated Prakash had to use other means to win, powerbombing Farmer Frog off the turnbuckles as he was enduring a series of punches in the corner. Sabar got the pin after that with feet on the ropes(FLAIR~!) in 7:44...he repeatedly glared at the kid on the way out and gave him several "I've got my eyes on you" gestures...
AC/DC("The Anarchist" Arik Cannon & Darin Corbin) vs. "Juke Joint" Lucas Calhoun & Missile Assault Man: The Battleborn pairing is working its way up the ladder of contention since Kevin Condron recruited the former Missile! Assault! Ant! to the fold. M.A.M. still likes to shout out his name, but in different context as he beats down his opponents...he even spells it out while doing the Garvin Stomp. Corbin(w/ headband) and Calhoun had an epic karate duel that turned into a slapfight...then we got SLOW MOTION~! to the delight of the fans. This weekend was my first opportunity to see either of the Battleborn guys in action; Calhoun's an entertaining character and I've heard a lot of good things about M.A.M. Chaos broke loose near the end, leading to Missile Assault taking out Corbin with a pump kick in 13:56...that brought the Calhoun/M.A.M. pairing up to two points in the tag team rankings.
Eddie Kingston(Snake Pit) vs. Blind Rage(Nightmare Warriors), Challenge Of The Immortals: This seemed like an obvious win for Kingston as Blind Rage is the low man on the N.W. totem pole. However, the race was tight at the top of the COTI leader board between these two teams...on top of that, Kingston covets the Grand Championship held by Nightmare Warriors captain Hallowicked. Blind Rage worked on Kingston's leg for most of the match and showed impressive power by hitting a Splash Mountain Bomb(sitout Razor's Edge) for a near-fall.
Kingston made the comeback and avoided Rage's double-stomp off the top rope...Rage came up limping badly and rolled out of the ring to regroup. As the referee checked on Rage, Hallowicked ran into the ring to attack Kingston...he laid him out with his new exploder fisherman buster finisher and quickly retreated to the backstage area. Rage's leg was suddenly feeling a lot better(though he still limped after re-entering the ring)...he hooked Kingston in an STF and the referee, not getting a response from Kingston, called for the bell in 9:16. CHIKARA is already setting up their season finale and the war between these sides is far from over...
Intermission~! Talked to promoter/retired wrestler Mike Quackenbush for a bit...I hadn't seen him at the first two shows on the tour, but he was at this one and the one in Columbus. Saw a few of his matches in the St. Louis area, primarily for the Lethal Wrestling Alliance(now St. Louis Anarchy)...it's too bad he never progressed farther in his in-ring career than a cup of coffee with Ring Of Honor. Also chatted with Oleg The Usurper, who was disappointed that he didn't have a scheduled fight for the evening...thank goodness for encores, then. Had to appreciate people with dedication to their characters like Oleg and Dasher Hatfield...Dasher was really nice and appreciated my Pac-Man T-shirt(calling the changing symbol "voodoo" of some sort :)).
Juan Francisco De Coronado & The Proletariat Boar Of Moldova(United Nations) vs. Jakob Hammermeier & Soldier Ant(Bruderschaft Des Kreuzes), Challenge Of The Immortals: Ring announcer Alex really hit his stride over the course of the week; he joined in the gag of people dozing off in the middle of Juan's slow entrance (including front-row fans and referee Bryce Remsburg). The U.N. duo seemed to be the crowd favorites in this rudo/rudo bout. Each side seemed like a mirror image of the other with the smaller bossy "leader" pushing around the powerhouse guy to do the grunt work. Juan and Jakob had a fun opening segment as they tried to out-cheapshot each other. The lucha tag rules came into play when Jakob simply dove out of the ring to touch the floor, thus allowing Soldier Ant to legally enter the match...however, he nearly wiped out on the guardrail in the process(OW). Soldier Ant's big power spot saw him block a Gore from the Boar and hoist him up into a running powerbomb...yikes. Juan took out Soldier Ant with a suicide dive, allowing the Boar to Gore Jakob for the win in 10:50.
"The Kentucky Gentleman" Chuck Taylor(Gentlemen's Club) vs. Blaster McMassive(Wrecking Crew), Challenge Of The Immortals: The Gentlemen's Club had a rough weekend in COIT competition for the most part...needed more Swamp Monster. *nodnodnod* It was a battle of experience and agility versus sheer power and size...and Chuck's no angel as he'll throw the rulebook out the window if the situation calls for it. The match was surprisingly quick compared to other bouts in the weekend...Blaster won with a sitout Blackhole Slam in 5:33.
Grand Champion Hallowicked, Campeones De Parejas N_R_G("The Generator" Race Jaxon & Hype Rockwell), & Young Lions' Champion Heidi Lovelace vs. The Throwbacks(Dasher Hatfield & "Mr. Touchdown" Mark Angelosetti), Icarus, & Princess Kimber Lee: All of the reigning titleholders were put on the same team for this feature bout...that put Heidi opposite the ring from her Dasher's Dugout stablemates. Heidi was sporting a black eye from a boot she took in her Chicago match. Hallowicked and Icarus have all kinds of history as they were tag partners in the early days of CHIKARA(Icarus was "Ichabod Slayne" when he competed under a mask)...on top of that, Hallowicked dethroned Icarus for the Grand Championship. Hallowicked was the lone rudo and wanted little to do with his teammates, particularly Heidi...while Touchdown had been teasing a heel turn in recent times, he seemed to play it straight for the weekend. Of course, it was all in the name of competition...if anyone could score a fall on a titleholder, it would put them in line for a championship match. The Throwbacks are former Campeones De Parejas and would definitely be gunning for another crack at the gold.
Anywho...YAY WRESTLING~! Hallowicked's partners made an effort to be good sports(especially when up against Kimber Lee)...that didn't sit well with the stemmed one. Icarus wanted a piece of Hallowicked while the champ made an effort to stay away from his old acquaintance. Bodies flew all over the place. leaving Hallowicked alone in the ring and the referee on the floor to check on the carnage. That brought out a vengeance-seeking Eddie Kingston and he wasted no time in wiping out Hallowicked with a spinning backfist! Eddie limped out of the ring and back to the dressing room area...it was just a matter of who would be able to capitalize on the situation. That person was Princess Kimber Lee as she re-entered the ring, wrapping up the Grand Champion in a folding press for the three-count! In the span of three days and shows, Kimber Lee scored victories over both the Young Lions' Champion and the Grand Champion...tremendous weekend!
Did the fans want One More Match(tm)? As a matter of fact, they did...
Fire Ant vs. Oleg The Usurper: Don't blink. Fire Ant met Oleg in the aisleway with a suicide dive and they kicked it into high gear right away. The match went a mere 1:23 before Oleg scored a major win with the Off With His Head(crossface smash). Cue mutual respect and we're out.
On the way out of the building, I crossed paths with someone who I'd never met in person, but who had competed in my neck of the woods at one time: 2 Tuff Tony. I name-dropped Big Bad Ben in reference to his days in the St. Louis scene and we talked for a bit before I left The Arena.
Our group stopped for ice cream at The Comfy Cow...I had a peanut brittle waffle cone. Mmm, ice cream. We had no hotel reservations for the area, so we left for Columbus, Ohio(passing through Cincinnati) for the last leg of our journey.
Of course, that's another story for another time...Same Pat-Time, Same Pat-Channel.
Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

Comedy Part 616: West Country Excursion
Location: Westport Funny Bone
Emcee: Charlie Winfrey
After: Dan Walsh
Before: Cameron Keys
It was a rainy evening and atendance was light, so the club wanted to do a quick show with shorter sets for each comedian. I only had a few things to try out, so that was okay with me. I performed around the middle of the show...the audience was a bit rough but I got some laughs for the new material. I will give it another go at the Valley Park Funny Bone tomorrow night...woo.

CHIKARA Special Comment (Part 2)
Now, as promised, a special comment about Friday's CHIKARA show at the Logan Square Auditorium in Chicago, Illinois.
DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.
Michael & Lauren Langan, Will, and myself got some meager shut-eye before hitting the road for Chi-Town on Friday. On the way out, we gave one of the hotel workers an impromptu education on independent wrestling and CHIKARA in particular...heh. The car conversations went in several interesting directions...honestly, I never contemplated my favorite movie scene of THAT nature. *eye twitches*
Brunch was had in "The Human Wrecking Ball" Pete Madden's home state of Wisconsion at the Bassett Street Brunch Club in Madison. I went with "American Style" (scrambled eggs, sausage, an English muffin, and a whole lotta fried potatoes) with orange juice to drink...most tremendous. I had quite a few new dining experiences on this excursion.
It was a rainy day in the Windy City...Michael spotted a bumper sticker that said "Some Days The Dragon Wins". Perhaps a positive omen for Shynron, who was challenging Hallowicked for the Grand Championship on this night? It wasn't my first visit to Chicago; I had a few family trips there when I was younger. I can recall going to Six Flags-Great America, seeing the fountain from "Married With Children", and bugging my mom to drive past Wrigley Field...only to get us stuck in traffic since there was a Cardinals-Cubs game that afternoon! (One thing I had forgotten about the greater Chicago area was the toll booths on the highway...joy.)
I perused a nearby bookstore while waiting in line for the show; the event was at the venue where All-American Wrestling is running in November with Fenix and Pentagon Jr. on the card. Sweet. SHIMMER is on my personal wrestling bucket list as well and they run in nearby Berwyn.
Your ring announcer was Alex Proen(?), who was sounding a bit hoarse on this night...thankfully he recovered well for the subsequent two shows of the weekend. Your referees were Bryce Remsburg, Larry Peace, and P.J. Drummond.
"The Kentucky Gentleman" Chuck Taylor & Orange Cassidy(Gentlemen's Club) vs. Jakob Hammermeier & Soldier Ant(Bruderschaft Des Kreuzes), Challenge Of The Immortals: This was my first Orange Cassidy experience; he's a party guy who's burned out for his actual wrestling matches, so he's extremely lazy/lethargic as a result. He'll usually tag into a match, take one good hit/chop, and then immediately tag back out...heh. The BDK team still doesn't have the best communication as Jakob is bossing his partner around and Soldier Ant is fighting his brainwashing. Chuck is a god among men, but you probably knew that. The finish saw Cassidy accidentally spit mist^H^H^Horange juice in Chuck's face, then Jakob blasted Orange with the WORLDSTAR PUNCH~! Cassidy staggered, assured everyone he was okay, and then faceplanted to the mat where he was pinned in 8:46. Bwahahaha.
Oleg The Usurper vs. Farmer Frog: Oleg was unnerved at the sight of his opponent, yelling that he "saw him die"(referring to Estonian Thunderfrog). However, Farmer Frog seems to have no memory of his past life...more on this as it develops. Farmer Frog is a very vocal performer and quickly won over the crowds this past weekend...in this case, the fan support was fairly evenly divided as opposed to the audience outright turning on Oleg as in Minneapolis. They had a good David/Goliath bout; Frog went to the top rope, but Oleg cut him off and climbed the turnbuckles to deliver a super chokeslam! (It was not the same as the one that ended Soldier Ant/Blaster McMassive the previous night as Oleg was facing the ringpost and turned in mid-move to slam Farmer Frog to the mat.) At any rate, that was the finish in 8:46.
Juan Francisco De Coronado & Prakash Sabar(United Nations) vs. Frightmare & Blind Rage(Nightmare Warriors), Challenge Of The Immortals: Rudo/rudo strikes again. Coronado took so much time getting to the ring that the announcer introduced him THREE TIMES before he finally got between the ropes. The U.N. team seemed to be the lesser of two evils for the night, notably. Sabar has been consistently hitting the Bronco Buster these days; it had been a running gag that the opponent would ALWAYS move out of the way. The Nightmare Warriors got the duke when Frightmare pinned Sabar after the Kneecolepsy(standing moonsault into a double kneedrop) in 5:06.
Campeones De Parejas N_R_G("The Generator" Race Jaxon & Hype Rockwell) & Young Lions' Champion Heidi Lovelace vs. Blaster McMassive, The Proletariat Boar Of Moldova, & Missile Assault Man: Not sure about the mindset behind the random collection of rudos in this one. This was my first time seeing Missile Assault Ant/Man since he unmasked to join the Battleborn stable. Blaster hadn't competed at the Indianapolis show in June, only interfering on behalf of his Devastation Corporation teammates. Rockwell seems to have dropped the energy-drink gimmick that he had at the time of the Indy show. Heidi was banged up in this one, ending up with a bloody nose and a shiner by the end of it; she did get a big moment as she bodyslammed McMassive(!) Teamwork and continuity made the difference as McMassive accidentally knocked Missile Assault off the top rope; that led to Heidi pinning Missile Assault after the low-altitude Frankensteiner in 11:40. Go champs!
Cue intermission...this venue was packed. Again, no concessions. (Sorry, Ben Simon.)
Icarus(Dasher's Dugout) vs. Eddie Kingston(Snake Pit), Challenge Of The Immortals: This match's history ran deep as Icarus ended Kingston's reign as the first Grand Champion of CHIKARA. Icarus went from one of the most hated guys on the roster to the company's savior as he attempted to wrest the championship from Kingston; his best opportunity was cut short by the promotion's abrupt hiatus. Icarus would finally win the title after CHIKARA's revival, but he lost the title to Hallowicked earlier this year. While the COTI competition was the main focus here, both men were hoping to move back into title contention...while I hadn't seen their previous encounters, they had plenty of familiarity moments where they countered each other's signature moves. Both are technically fan favorites, but Kingston's attitude and character allow him to easily slide into tweener/rulebreaker mode. In contrast to the other shows of the weekend, Icarus focused his attack on Kingston's arm rather than the knee in an attempt to neutralize his power-based offense. Kingston worked on the neck to soften up Icarus for a potential Saito suplex/backdrop driver. The finish came down to a twice-reversed small package as Icarus edged out a hard-fought win in 14:44...nicely done. Kingston sulked after the bell, then finally snapped and leveled Icarus with his spinning backfist before storming out of the ring. The setup of the building was a nice touch as Kingston went to the backstage area and taunted Icarus from the balcony as he was being helped away from the ringside area.
The Throwbacks(Dasher Hatfield & "Mr. Touchdown" Mark Angelosetti) vs. AC/DC("The Anarchist" Arik Cannon & Darin Corbin) vs. The Punk Rock All-Stars(Drake Carter & Shaun Cannon) vs. Los Ice Creams(El Hijo Del Ice Cream & Ice Cream Jr.), four-way dance: Points were in play in this one...if a team could score all three eliminations, they could qualify for a shot at the Campeonates De Parejas in one night! Los Ice Creams took a seat in the audience after being announced first, observing the entrances of the other teams...then they got into a tiff with AC/DC over their clashing outfits(both wore pink). They opted for a temporary partner switch as Jr. stood in Corbin's corner and Hijo stood with Cannon...heh. Touchdown organized an impromptu football scrimmage in the middle of this one...then Corbin triggered the slow-motion sequence which got a slow "thiiiiis isssss awwwwwesooooome" chant.
Chaos broke loose and the All-Stars hit Hijo with their Blue Thunder Bomb/neckbreaker combo, allowing Carter to pin Hijo in 8:51. Shortly after that, Shaun Carter rolled up Corbin out of nowhere for another elimination in 9:28...aww. That left the former Tag Champs with the newcomers...there's a plot point in Dasher doing a People's Elbow and Touchdown going out of his way to retrieve the elbowpad (don't know the whole story there). The Punk Rock All-Stars got the surprise win as Carter pinned Touchdown after the Blue Thunder/neckbreaker combo in 15:03...just like that, the newbie team has three points and can challenge for the Tag Titles! The members of N_R_G stood on the balcony with the belts to tease that upcoming matchup.
Hallowicked vs. Shynron for the Grand Championship: Shynron earned his three points with consecutive wins over Boar, Touchdown, and Mark Andrews. Hallowicked has been around since the beginning of CHIKARA and Shynron is the young rising star with sensational aerial moves (he faced Amazing Red at Beyond Wrestling on Sunday). They had a really strong match with Shynron scoring several convincing near-falls...everyone bit on the pin attempt after a far-corner-to-far-corner Van Terminator, but Hallowicked got a foot on the bottom rope at the last split-second...yikes. Hallowicked managed to hit a last-ditch exploder fisherman buster to barely retain his title in 14:58...tremendous.
That was the main event, but the fans wanted One More Match(tm)...and so it came to pass.
Fire Ant vs. Ophidian vs. Princess Kimber Lee: It looked like a one-on-one match between Kimber and Ophidian, but then Fire Ant entered the fray to make it a triple threat. Fire Ant's entrance involved a slight slip on the ropes, then nearly splatting on the floor with his springboard somersault dive...ouch. He recovered well from that big leap and they had a fun little encore match. Fire Ant was taken out of the equation and Ophidian tried for a move off the top rope, but Kimber Lee countered into a powerbomb and pinned him with the folding press in 4:29. Woo.
Post-show, our group of four made its way to Pequod's Chicago Pizza...mmm, pizza. I had sausage and pepperoni deep-dish pizza and root beer as we watched the end of the A.L.C.S. game where the Kansas City Royals clinched the pennant against the Toronto Blue Jays. I'm not a HUGE baseball fan but I still pull for the Cardinals when they're in contention...now that I no longer have a horse in the race and it's down to the World Series, I'm rooting for the Royals against the New York Mets. On one hand there's the 1985 Series...on the other hand, there's pond scum. Do the math.
More truly weird car discussions ensued from there as we made our way back to the hotel...I'll simply say "CHIKARA After Dark" and leave it at that. I wish I had researched Chicago's comedy scene to see if there were any open-mic shows to check out...want to investigate that avenue at some point.
Anywho, that's the halfway point of the CHIKARA excursion...more to come next time. Same Pat-Time, Same Pat-Channel.
Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

CHIKARA Special Comment (Part 1)
Now, as promised, a special comment about Thursday's CHIKARA show at Mill City Nights in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.
This weekend was quite the adventure; it was my biggest extended trip away from home. While I planned reasonably well for the weekend, it would have been a good idea to bring a) a jacket and b) cash...didn't see any ATMs from my bank branch on the trip. (I hadn't been away from home for an extended period of time in over a decade!)
My compatriot Michael Langan and his wife Lauren flew into St. Louis on Wednesday night and picked me up at home in a rental vehicle...we tried to find a late-night doughnut place in St. Louis, but nothing was open (including places that advertised themselves as being 24/7). We drove to Minnesota from there with a stop in Iowa City's Sheraton Hotel for shut-eye around 3 AM...we discovered that if Iowa highway signs advertise a rest stop, be sure it says "modern" rest stop or you might just get a few picnic tables and a trash can. We almost hit a deer and that was the extent of the eventfulness of this leg of the trip. (There's not much in Iowa, is my point.) Breakfast/brunch was at Hamburg Inn No. 2; had a breakfast wrap. Once we got to Minneapolis, dinner was had at Matt's Bar: Home of the Jucy Lucy (cheese melted inside of the hamburger patty). I opted for a standard cheeseburger and root beer.
I had general-admission seats for the whole weekend and had my ticket printed out for this show...since my compatriots(including previous acquaintances Will and Alec) had better seats, I was watching on my own for a lot of the shows. I did have to refer to them for some of the background info, but I was aware of the backstories for the most part. The first half of the show was viewed from the balcony, but I was able to move down to the floor for the second half.
The tour had a few notable absences: Two-thirds of the Devastation Corporation(Max Smashmaster & Flex Rumblecrunch), Silver Ant, Worker Ant II, Jervis Cottonbelly, Amasis, Obariyon & Kodama of The Batiri, and Kevin Condron. Ashley Remington was only on the Sunday show as his suspiciously-similar doppleganger Dalton Castle was wrestling for Ring Of Honor.
Your ring announcer was Alex Proen(?); your referees were Bryce Remsburg, Larry Peace, and Rob Page(w/ sunglasses). Alex was making his ring-announcing debut and had an early slip-up when he dropped an F-bomb at the family-friendly show...however, he quickly righted the ship and did well from there.
"The Kentucky Gentleman" Chuck Taylor(Gentlemen's Club) vs. Frightmare(Nightmare Warriors), Challenge Of The Immortals: I was able to recognize several of the theme songs by the end of weekend, including the distinctive tunes that these two used. Of course, all three Nightmare Warriors on the tour used the same theme, so that probably helped. Chuck was the fan favorite and spent the early portion of the match claiming that Frightmare touched his butt...heh. Actual butt-touching would ensue, including Chuck pushing Bryce into the ropes when Frightmare was on the turnbuckles. Taylor won in 8:43 with a running version of the Awful Waffle, which is a powerbomb pickup into a piledriver-ish drop...owie.
Campeones De Parejas N_R_G("The Generator" Race Jaxon & Hype Rockwell) & Farmer Frog vs. Darin Corbin & The Punk Rock All-Stars(Drake Carter & Shaun Cannon): The spiky-haired All-Stars were making their CHIKARA debuts. N_R_G upset The Devastation Corporation for the tag titles in September. Farmer Frog seems to be a reincarnation of Estonian Thunderfrog; Thunderfrog was "killed off" by masked monster Deucalion when The Flood was running rampant. Corbin managed to put the match into "slow motion" for a short stretch, something that became a recurring theme for his weekend. (He even has a shirt that says "This T-Shirt Is In Slow Motion"!) Hadn't seen Corbin in a while; he hasn't wrestled for St. Louis Anarchy in a bit. There's a good chance I didn't always get the All-Stars' individual names right as this was my first time seeing them; I think Carter had the spiky beard and Cannon had the braided beard. At any rate, the All-Stars' teamwork made the different as Carter pinned Farmer Frog after a Blue Thunder Bomb/neckbreaker double-team with Cannon in 11:03...the new team made a quick impact and got one-up on the current Tag Champs in the process.
Oleg The Usurper vs. "The Anarchist" Arik Cannon: Oleg is fresh off a full-fledged turn to fan-favoritism after "off-ing" Wrecking Crew manager Sidney Bakabella. In that regard, he had a tough weekend as he was matched up against other technicos on all four shows. Cannon was the clear hometown favorite and Oleg worked a subtle heel role as a result. Neither guy could hit a finisher, but Cannon scored a slight upset win with a forward-roll cradle in 7:56. They shook hands afterwards...SPORTSMANSHIP~!
Icarus, "Mr. Touchdown" Mark Angelosetti, & Young Lions' Champion Heidi Lovelace(Dasher's Dugout) vs. Princess Kimber Lee & Los Ice Creams(El Hijo Del Ice Cream & Ice Cream Jr.)(Crown & Court), Challenge Of The Immortals: Kimber Lee's motivation has been helping the perennial punching bags to achieve more success in recent months. Before the match, a fan on the balcony yelled out "DIPPIN' DOTS!"...those were fighting words and Hijo actually ran up the stairs to accost the fan at close quarters. Bwahahaha. Hijo tried to join Touchdown's pre-match huddle and Kimber Lee had to pull him away.
Heidi and Kimber had some really good exchanges; apparently they've feuded in other promotions and perhaps that will be carried over to CHIKARA with Heidi's Young Lions' Cup at stake. Kimber seems to be the CHIKARA version of Bayley as she had a lot of young girl fans over the course of the weekend.
Los Ice Creams goofed around with a spare mask and one of them put on the extra mask...then lost the extra mask and freaked out like he'd been exposed. Heh. Later in the match, an Ice Cream put the extra mask on Heidi before attacking her in the corner...but then got upset because he thought he was attacking his partner. Kimber got a great near-fall on Touchdown as Los Ice Creams assisted her in executing a flying rana into a pin attempt. The finish saw the women fight on the turnbuckles, ending with Kimber Lee getting a sunset flip off the top rope into her alligator clutch/folding press pinning combination...that allowed the Princess to pin the Young Lions' Champion in 14:12! Nicely done.
Cue intermission...the wrestlers are very active during intermission, something I always enjoyed in the Gateway Championship Wrestling days. Prakash Sabar appreciated my X-Pac T-shirt and I got my picture taken with him...I also picked up one of his T-shirts(some wrestlers are bringing card swipers for people who don't have enough cash). Without spending cash, I didn't invest in concessions at the wrestling shows this weekend...gasp! (I know Ben Simon always appreciates that part of my columns...) Talked to Heidi briefly and name-dropped Davey Vega, who's finally starting to get more recognition on the national independent scene...good for him.
"The Sheik" Ariya Daivari vs. Wildcat vs. "The Husky Heartthrob" Kody Rice vs. "The King Of Throwdown" Venom for the F1RST Wrestlepalooza Title: This was a showcase for Minneapolis' resident independent promotion; I had only seen Ariya Daivari before this(at St. Louis Anarchy). Rice is a heavy-set guy who seems to be a fan-favorite version of Gorgeous Jordan Lacey's original character; he also applied quite a bit of body oil, borrowing from the schtick of Japanese wrestler Michael Nakazawa and becoming "too slippery" to keep in wrestling holds. Wildcat was billed as a "crimefighter" and does a "Meow" taunt in the vein of Daniel Bryan's "Yes" chant. He stopped Ariya from praying before the match...because MURICA. He also takes the cat schtick very seriously, to the point where he was distracted by one of his opponents producing a ball of yarn! Venom was the only guy who didn't really stand out here...he came out like a fan favorite, but seemed to drift toward the heel side to keep an even balance in the matchup. Rob Page was apparently a F1RST official as this was the only match he refereed. Wildcat dove off the top rope onto Rice and Daivari got the win over Venom with the Magic Carpet Ride splash off the turnbuckles in 10:35. Nicely done.
Grand Champion Hallowicked(Nightmare Warriors) vs. Jakob Hammermeier(Das Bruderschaft Des Kreuzes), Challenge Of The Immortals(non-title): Given the format of the COTI series, we were bound to get some rudo-vs.-rudo matches like this one. Unfortunately, it didn't make for a very engaged audience...Jakob became the lesser of two evils in the eyes of the fans, though that was still an awkward match structure. (Jakob would gripe on the other shows about the fickleness of the audience...heh.) Hallowicked won with a new finisher: It started like an exploder suplex, but he dropped Jakob straight down like a fisherman buster. That was enough for the victory in 5:51.
The ring announcer and referee pick a kid out of the crowd to draw for the 50/50 raffle(RAFFLEMANIA~!)...in this case, the little girl actually drew her dad's ticket. It was her first live wrestling show and I'm sure she had a great experience...she was practically covered in wrestling merchandise by the end of the show.
Ophidian, Eddie Kingston, & Shynron(Snake Pit) vs. Juan Francisco De Coronado, The Proletariat Boar Of Moldova, & Prakash Sabar(United Nations), Challenge Of The Immortals: Juan's slooooow entrance was emphasized by the referee falling asleep in the ring and the front-row regulars dozing off as well. I've been very impressed with Shynron; would like to see him against A.C.H. at some point. FLIPPIES~! Juan's boots came untied and the fans got on his case with "tie your shoes" chants. He blatantly defied them by leaving the boots untied; of course, this came back to bite him as Ophidian tripped him up with a timely yank of the laces. The evil foreigners targeted Kingston's knee at every opportunity, something that would be a recurring theme during Eddie's matches this weekend. Finishers flew in the home stretch and Shynron showed off his agility, getting the main shine to lead into his title shot against Hallowicked in Chicago. He finished off Prakash with an insane 630 Splash off the MIDDLE turnbuckle in 20:57...yowza.
The regular CHIKARA fans knew what to do at this point: Start a "One More Match" chant. This started at the previous Chicago show and carried over to the Indianapolis show that I attended...and now it's a regular thing. It's a good quick bout to cap off the show and features guys on the tour who aren't on the night's announced card.
Soldier Ant vs. Blaster McMassive: I agree with my compatriot about McMassive; he's got the size and build to make an impact in the bigger picture. Soldier Ant was the fan favorite for the night as he's been fighting the brainwashing of the BDK...fans have been saluting him to remind him of who he was. He was acting more like his old self here than at any other time in recent memory; he's usually the dominant character, but he was fighting a much bigger and stronger opponent. The two fought on the top rope when Blaster cut off Solder's attempt to climb the turnbuckles...but Soldier Ant got the better of the exchange and delivered a top-rope chokeslam(!) for the win in 4:46. Woo. After the match, Soldier Ant acted like he was trying to remember his past and the fans saluted him...but he simply staggered to the backstage area without a breakthrough(yet).
We made a run to Wendy's(I didn't get anything) and then a gas station before heading back to the hotel for some sleep. The odyssey was far from over...but that story will continue in my next commentary. Stay tuned...Same Pat-Time, Same Pat-Channel.
Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.
-PB, Watching Wrestling Wrong Since 1991
P.S. We are all marks.
Rob Page was apparently a F1RST official as this was the only match he refereed. Wildcat dove off the top rope onto Rice and Daivari got the win over Venom with the Magic Carpet Ride splash off the turnbuckles in 10:35. Nicely done.

Unfortunately, it didn't make for a very engaged audience...Jakob became the lesser of two evils in the eyes of the fans, though that was still an awkward match structure.
