SLA Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about the St. Louis Anarchy show on Friday, July 13th at the Spaulding Hall Club in Alton, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

When the National Wrasslin' League closed up shop, it wasn't long before St. Louis Anarchy decided to get back in the game.  It was established that the promotion would have a working relationship with Pro Wrestling Championship Series(as it did before) and the Gateway Heritage Title(previously the SLA Title) would be defended in both promotions.  Time will tell whether the Tag Team Titles or any other championship will return to circulation.  As it was, the show had a lot of hype behind it and it showed in the attendance; they packed the house with a lot of enthusiastic onlookers.

Your ring announcer was Sarah Rose; your referees were Nick Chinn & Adam Kennedy.

Logan James vs. Mighty Micah vs. "The Tragedy" Slade Porter vs. Mathias Waterman vs. Shane Sanders:  This was the "dark match" and introductions started EXACTLY as the door opened...I was pretty far back in line, so I completely missed the match by the time I made it into the venue.  NOOOOO MY OCD...thankfully Ben Simon filled me in on the details and Micah posted the match video online.  It started in progress so I don't have the exact match, plus the camera dipped down from the ring RIGHT when the finishing move was executed.  I will have to take Ben's word for it; Logan James pinned Porter(who's gone from a fratboy to an opera buff) with a Michinoku Driver in about 7-8 minutes.  Don't recall any significant highlights, but it had solid action and I look forward to seeing more of everyone involved.

"Li'l Hollywood Hills" Everett Connors performed "I Am Him" live...he heard a few "David X" chants but brushed them off.  It's good to see that the song rights have carried over from the NWL.  Hopefully this will be in the DVD extras or something.

Pierre Abernathy kicked off the show for a teased major announcement, but he said it wasn't about him and quickly handed the microphone over to "The Dirty Rook" Mat Fitchett.  St. Louis Anarchy would be joining forces with PWCS for a joint show on Friday, August 24th...but the big news was that Fitchett's longtime Internet nemesis DAVID ARQUETTE would be there.  They had encountered each other at an independent show during WrestleMania weekend and Arquette even had a match recently, but Fitchett had been calling him out on social media for a few years.  Fitchett said that he would see Arquette in the ring and deal with him personally...no match was specificed at the time, but it was seemingly set for 8/24!  (Sadly, Arquette cancelled on the show mere days after this event...I don't know the whole story first-hand, but it's too bad this couldn't happen.  Whatever the so-called match quality, it would have been an entertaining piece of business and gotten a lot of attention for the Midwest wrestling scene.)

Leonel "Hoodie" Howlett vs. "The Monarch" Jeremy Wyatt:  These two had traditionally been on the same side in the NWL, so this was their first one-on-one meeting...Hoodie got a pretty positive reaction at PWCS the previous month, so he was the crowd favorite here against long-established rulebreaker Wyatt.  Wyatt had been very close to retiring before the NWL came calling, but that run gave him new motivation in his career.  Howlett showed that he's more than just a brawler, focusing his attack on Wyatt's leg in the early stages of the bout.  Wyatt retaliated by going after the arm to negate Hoodie's power advantage.  Howlett was primarily known as a tag team competitor for a long time but he's had some impressive performances in singles competition against the likes of Jimm,y Jacobs, Eddie Kingston, and even Haku.  He nearly beat Wyatt with a Rock Bottom, then Wyatt got his own near-fall after the Lightning Spiral.  In the end it came down to Wyatt's experience edge as he was able to take Hoodie down in a double-armbar submission(a la Rings Of Saturn)...Howlett couldn't tap out but the referee called for a stoppage in 13:01!

Roscoe Eat Lisa("The Big Mustache On Campus" Mikey McFinnegan & "Zesty" Zakk Sawyers) vs. The Riegel Twins(Logan & Sterling):  Several competitors held up cups of beer over the entrance aisle for the returning and reuniting duo of Roscoe Eat Lisa.  Zakk had seemingly quit the business about a year ago, but he returned to wrestling fairly recently and patched things up with Mikey.  (Mikey and Marko Stunt are the Cape Championship Wrestling Tag Team Champions, but Zakk subbed for Marko in a recent title defense under the now-widely-popular Freebird Rule.)  The Riegels were looking to make a good impression outside of the NWL...I'm sure they would have been Tag Champs there if they hadn't been bitten by the injury bug.  This was full blast from bell to bell...now that the Riegels don't have their individual names on their gear, I'll have no idea who's who unless I hear one call out to the other during a bout.  (Former NWL play-by-play man Ben Miller called the match for Powerbomb TV and he seems to be one of the only people who can tell them apart, so I should probably leave it to him.)  Given the pace of the match, it couldn't have lasted all that long...Mikey pinned hell-if-I-know Riegel after the Stone Cold Stunner-assisted Code Red in 5:39.

Familiar music played in the building and we were greeted by an unexpected guest:  Buddy Shepherd!  His very close personal long-time friend Evan Gelistico said on social media that he couldn't make it to the show, but Buddy made no such statements and he was happy to be in the building.  As is often the case in wrestling, promos like this tend to be interrupted...in this case, it was by SLA original Adam Caster, who had retired from in-ring competition a few years prior.  The friendly conversation turned hostile as Caster took credit for training all of the SLA favorites like Gary Jay, Pierre, and Evan...he then said that he had a new protege who was better than all of them.  That prompted Matt Kenway to attack Buddy from behind, leaving him laying in the ring.  Kenway and Caster took their leave, but Buddy was furious and let them know about it with some colorful language that I didn't think Buddy knew.  He challenged Kenway to a match at the September 14th show...in a twist on a familiar stipulation, it would be a "Buddies Bring The Weapons" Match!

"Li'l Hollywood Hills" Everett Connors vs. Anthony "Sharkbait" Gutierrez:  Connors made quite an entrance in a rainbow-colored jacket with his hair in cornrows.  The fans quickly decided Connors was their favorite in this one, but Sharkbait impressed a lot of fans who hadn't seen him before.  Sharkbait had mostly been a fan favorite in the NWL, but he could have potential as an arrogant bad guy...he definitely showed shades of that attitude here.  Sharkbait pulled off an impressive combo, hitting a standing backflip uranagi and transitioning straight into the triangle hold for the tapout in 9:55...nicely done.

Savanna Stone vs. Angelus Layne:  This was a rematch from PWCS in June where Angelus scored a dominant victory; the bout was originally scheduled to be Angelus vs. Marti Belle, but Marti had to cancel due to another opportunity.  Angelus was very popular in her previous run in St. Louis Anarchy, meaning that Savanna's reception wasn't as positive as it normally is.  Angelus was embracing her recent rulebreaking streak from PWCS, but it was still a fairly divided crowd.  As noted with previous bouts against Angelus and Sophie King, Savanna may need to formulate new strategies for stronger opponents...she connected with a few high-risk maneuvers, but there was no way she could go punch-for-punch with someone as tough as Angelus.  Unfortunately for Savanna, this match ended the same as the first one as Angelus finished with a hanging neckbreaker in 7:18.

The Besties In The World("The Miracle Worker" Davey Vega & "The Dirty Rook" Mat Fitchett) vs. The Carnies("The Ringmaster" Nick Iggy" & "The Dogfaced Gargoyle" Kerry Awful):  Sarah announced "The Imaginary Friend" Tripp Cassidy in the Carnies' corner, but I didn't see him...Ben Simon theorized that he was truly "imaginary" on this night.  The match started with a psychological game known as "taking the other team's entrance attire hostage".  On top of that, Fitchett had a number for his pizza order and had to tell Pizza Ebert(the fan nickname for the venue's food server) to hold it for the end of the match.  Fitchett came out with a title belt, which I was informed was the Gordie Boggs Championship(named after David Arquette's character in Ready To Rumble)...I was told it's on the line 24/7 like the old WWF Hardcore Title.  This was a first-time match between these teams, both of which have interesting partner contrasts:  Vega's technical acumen with Fitchett's aerial ability, plus Iggy's straightforward style with Awful's brawling ability.  We saw a ton of close calls for either side with the tag team partner breaking up pinfalls...The Besties' Brain Damage(brainbuster to the knee/flying knee strike combo) didn't end the match and neither did the Carnies' dropkick-assisted Michinoku Driver.  In the end, Fitchett showed impressive strength by lifting Awful into Tombstone position, then holding up Iggy when Vega stacked him up for the Last Ride...cue TOTAL TAKER and Fitchett pinned Awful for the win in 21:15!

We got some post-match mutual respect as Pizza Ebert came back out to give Fitchett his pizza...but then the pizza guy blindsided Fitchett with the pizza pan and pinned him for the Gordie Boggs Championship!  I can honestly say that I did not expect this turn of events going into the evening's festivities...

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Root beer and Coca-Cola.

Mike Outlaw vs. "Privilege Personified" Rasheed Ali(w/ Shane Sanders):  Of note, Ali's expensive entrance shirt was on the line in this one.  Sanders got involved at opportune moments, as per his recent history.  This seemed like a more straightforward bout to ease the fans back into the action...Ali is doing very well, considering his limited experience.  Sanders' involvement finally backfired and Outlaw won with the mafia kick in 8:56, taking home the newest addition to his wardrobe.

Kevin Lee Davidson vs. Thomas Shire:  Cue HOSS BATTLE~!  It was unusual to see K.L.D. as a fan favorite since he's been a rulebreaker in most other promotions around here.  We saw great power and agility out of these two heavyweight competitors.  While Shire had only recently been making a name for himself in the Midwest, he actually had a significant experience edge on Davidson since he debuted in 2007.  The momentum shifted several times, but Shire muscled K.L.D. up into a Death Valley Driver for the shocking upset win in 10:54!

Paco Gonzalez vs. "The Professional Lowlife" Christian Rose(w/ Quinn MacKay) for the Gateway Heritage Title:  With all of the high-profile bouts on this show, the championship was nearly an afterthought in the match announcements.  I don't know anything about Quinn, though I would LIKE to know...*gets whacked*  Rose rudely pushed Sarah Rose down, just to make sure we all knew who to boo.  We were told that each champion gets to pick his own title match stipulation and Paco's choice was the presence of two referees...oddly enough, after that was made a thing, the second referee stayed in the backstage area for most of this one.  Rose is one of my favorite wrestling personalities, both in the ring as a rulebreaker and out of the ring on social media.  The match went swimmingly until the referee was knocked down, meaning there was no one to check for a submission when Rose hooked the No-Leaf Clover(Liontamer-style Boston crab).  Ref two arrived just as Paco countered the hold into a victory roll, but Quinn pulled the official out at two.  Rose came back with a backslide and feet on the ropes, getting the three-count in 12:17 to win the Gateway Heritage Title!  BUT WAIT...the original referee saw the feet on the ropes and told the second one what had happened, leading to the bout being restarted.  A furious Rose went back on the attack and attempted an O'Connor Roll, but Paco reversed it and held the tights(fight fire with fire) for the real win in 0:51 of the restart (13:08 total)!

"The Stiff Robo Ginger" Gary Jay vs. "The Warhorse" Jake Parnell, best-of-three-falls match:  This was promoted as the final battle in this long-standing feud, something which started in Zero-One USA over their Jr. Heavyweight Title and included Gary doing some serious damage to Parnell's face with a turnbuckle hook.  After his robe had been previously misplaced at an east-coast independent show, Parnell had it back for this event.  Gary brought out a turnbuckle hook in an attempt to replicate the previous damage, but didn't get to use it right away.  Gary ended up bloody after a suicide dive hit nothing but chairs and floor.  Parnell notched the first pinfall in 13:14 after the double-stomp off the middle rope to the back of the head.  Gary evened the score in 21:48 by countering a half-nelson suplex attempt into a victory roll for a flash pinfall.  Things got even crazier from there as the referees were abused for trying to enforce the rules...chairs came into play, then tacks, then even MORE chairs...in fact, the fans filled the ring with chairs!  The two battled on the top rope, ending with Gary delivering a massive superplex into the chair-filled ring!  Gary got the final fall after that in 30:55 to end the feud!

As the two warriors laid in the middle of the ring, Greg Jovi suddenly made an appearance with a microphone, ranting against Anarchy and all it stood for.  Before the fans even processed what was happening, Christian Rose(w/ Quinn) and Thomas Shire hit the ring to beat down Gary and Parnell!  "Dirdey" Jake Dirden made a surprise appearance and made his way to the ring...but he turned out to be on the side of Jovi's crew as he assisted in the beatdown!  That was how a wild and crazy night ended in St. Louis Anarchy's return!

Whew...there was a lot to process with this show...as previously mentioned, the David Arquette appearance was not meant to be, but Anarchy and PWCS still have a lot of great shows set up for the rest of the year...Midwest rasslin is going strong in 2018!

The lights went off and on again and Makaze was gone, but LaFleur had time to recover and hit a reverse Stunner to score the huge upset win (11:07).
-”The Wind Of Destruction” Makaze d. Outtkast by DQ to retain the Heavyweight Title. The referee was knocked down and Outtkast hit the Case Study, but there was no one to count. Makaze stunned Outtkast with a low blow, but Adrian Surge hit the ring to attack Makaze and the recovering official called for the bell (12:22).
-Mike Outlaw d. Jayden Dominic Rose to win the D-1 Title. Rose claimed Outlaw had car problems and called for the referee to count Outlaw out of the ring, but Outlaw ran in the front door to kick-start the match. Once the bell sounded, Rose desperately went for a chair and blatantly hit Outlaw for the DQ (0:33). Outlaw demanded that Rose come back to the ring and face him in a no-DQ matchup...surprisingly Rose took him up on it. Outlaw gave Rose a taste of his own chair, then hit the High Noon(top-rope elbowdrop) to decisively win the championship (1:02)!

-Commentators:  Matt Striker & Vampiro.
-"The Savage" Jake Strong d. Sammy Guevara with the anklelock (4:00).  Strong refused to immediately release the hold, giving it an extra twist to seemingly break Guevara's ankle.
-Promoter Antonio Cueto gave a less than shining performance review to Vinnie Massaro, but did get him a pizza delivery(pineapple?)...unfortunately, it would be his last meal.
-Matanza Cueto d. Vinnie Massaro after the Wrath Of The Gods(rewind powerslam) (1:09).  The pizza delivery guy tried to make off with Massaro's wallet, but ran into the masked monster and received a chokeslam.  Matanza would deliver a double sacrifice to the gods:  Not just Massaro, but the pizza guy as well.
-Antonio Cueto, in the interest of doing something different from his son Dario, changed the scheduled six-way match for the Gift Of The Gods Title into a trios bout.  The winning team would then compete with each other in a triple threat match to decide the new titleholder.  Cueto paired off former tag team partners Havoc and Ivelisse, then asked them to select a partner; it didn't take long for them to decide on Havoc's current championship partner Mack.
-King Cuerno, Dragon Azteca Jr., & Dezmond Xavier d. Trios Co-Champions Willie Mack & Son Of Havoc & Ivelisse Velez when Cuerno pinned Havoc after the Thrill Of The Hunt(fireman's-carry Michinoku Driver) (6:16); Mack & Havoc's partner Killshot watched the match from afar.  Mil Muertes appeared after the match, attacking Mack and powerbombing him into the ring apron; Killshot ran to ringside, but accidentally(?) hit Havoc with a pump kick when Mil moved out of the way.  Mil laid out Killshot as well before taking his leave.
-Dragon Azteca Jr. won a triple threat match with King Cuerno and Dezmond Xavier to win the Gift Of The Gods Title when he pinned Dezmond with a top-rope victory roll (11:29).
-Elsewhere:  Marty "The Moth" Martinez was recovering from his broken arm at the hands of LU Champion Pentagon Dark...but Mariposa woke him up from a pleasant dream about ring announcer Melissa Santos.  Mariposa said that she double-crossed him at Ultima Lucha because he lacked focus...he needed to focus on taking Pentagon's championship.

Dynamo Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about the Dynamo Pro Wrestling show on Friday, July 6th at The Loading Dock in Grafton, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

I'm a big fan of wrestling tournaments in general, so I was psyched to hear that Dynamo's second annual Riot On The River Tournament had been expanded to sixteen participants.  They even provided brackets to fill out at this particular show...I got about half of my picks right, though my attempt at a clean sweep was derailed with the opening match.  There was a great fan turnout for the show, which I hope continues through the other two Grafton events this year.

The brackets shaped up as follows:

Adrian Surge vs. Jackal
Shiroi Senshi vs. The Snitch

C.J. Shine vs. Tony Esteem
Billy McNeil vs. Jimmi LaFleur

Ricky Rodriguez vs. Xavier Shadowz
Mike Outlaw vs. Viktor Von Stein

Benjamin Trust vs. Camaro Jackson
Outtkast vs. Ryan Ash

Your ring announcers were Chris Roedel & Luke Roberts; your referees were Scott Ramsey & Jay King.

The show kicked off with a group photo of the sixteen tournament entrants; it was very Japanese/super indie style.  Heavyweight Champion "The Wind Of Destruction" Makaze made an appearance, saying he had initially been entered in the tournament but decided to rest on his championship laurels instead.  He dismissed any of the competitors in the ring as a threat, though his actions later in the night would speak differently...

"Lights Out" Adrian Surge vs. Jackal, Riot On The River Tournament:  Surge was one of the tournament favorites, particularly in his quarter of the bracket...of course, one can never underestimate Jackal with his experience advantage.  Jackal actually managed to deliver a chokeslam for a near-fall...I hadn't seen him use that move since his GCW series with Daizee Haze.  Near the end of the bout, Makaze made his way to ringside, taking an interest in recent contender Surge.  When Jackal managed to hit the Killswitch #2(step-up Unprettier), Makaze made his move and held Surge's foot from outside the ring.  Neither Jackal nor the referee saw this subterfuge...thanks to the unwanted involvement of the champion, Jackal picked up the win in 11:28 to advance in the tournament!  I had figured on Makaze screwing over Surge in the tournament...I just didn't see it happening until round TWO.  Jackal and Surge made nice afterwards (as Jackal was unaware of Makaze's interference with the pinfall)...but Surge's night wasn't quite over.  He got the microphone and challenged Makaze to defend the Heavyweight Title against him at the August 3rd show in Grafton!

"The Spanish Red Devil" Ricky Rodriguez vs. Tag Team Champion Xavier Shadowz, Riot On The River Tournament:  With the bracket setup, there was a chance that the Agents Of Chaos would face each other in the quarterfinals.  These two were no strangers to each other as Rodriguez had challenged for the Tag Titles previously with Edvin Kudic.  Rodriguez put forth a great effort, even delivering a DDT on the ring apron.  He went for the win with a Fameasser, but Shadowz blocked it and hit a sitout powerbomb to get the duke in 9:27...Viktor Von Stein celebrated with his partner afterwards, but would they be opponents in the next round?

Benjamin Ulysses Trust vs. Camaro Jackson:  Trust had mostly competed for Wrestling Over Everything in recent months, but he had competed for Dynamo a handful of times in the past and this was his return to the DPW ring.  Trust had quite a few supporters in the audience on this night, which may have caught Jackson off guard as he's usually the crowd favorite.  There were a handful of rough spots but things got smoother as the match progressed...I've seen that both guys are capable of delivering in the ring.  Trust picked up the win in 10:41 with a fireman's-carry slam(a la John Cena's F-U/Attitude Adjustment...is that the Trust Fall?).

Outtkast vs. "The Beach Body" Ryan Ash, Riot On The River Tournament:  The winner of this match would face Trust in the quarterfinals.  While it seemed like a logical outcome for Outtkast to avenge his loss to Ash from FUBAR, my brackets had Ash going to the semifinals and losing to Mike Outlaw there...hopefully that match can happen eventually.  (Ash's availability was a factor as well; that should have been a dead giveaway.)  These guys first fought in 2001 and know each other very well...I think they're 2-2 against each other all-time.  (They traded wins on GCW TV, Ash won the hair-vs.-hair ladder match at an Adults F'n Only show, and Ash won at FUBAR.  WHY DO I KNOW THIS OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD.)  For the newbies reading this, Ash started his career at the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance as "Danny Kidman" due to his resemblance to the former WWE/WCW Cruiserweight Champion...when he joined Gateway Championship Wrestling, his character was a Pokemon fanatic(taking the name from the main hero of the anime franchise) before becoming "The Rock 'N' Roll Sensation".  He teamed regularly with Billy McNeil and Matt Sydal before turning on Sydal and becoming a rulebreaker.

Anywho, the match ruled, thanks for asking.  Ash scored close near-falls after an Unprettier and another after a Razor's Edge flipped forward into a version of the Pedigree(I think that used to be the Hard Knox Drop or something to that effect)...he nearly got the tapout with the triangle hold that won him the FUBAR match but Kast just barely reached the ropes.  Outtkast finally managed to hit his Case Study finisher out of nowhere, scoring the pinfall in 10:00...our first confirmed quarterfinal would be Outtkast vs. Benjamin Trust!

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Popcorn(free at the venue) and a root beer.  Indie fan rule of thumb:  Look for freebies (or a water fountain) if you're short on cash.

"The Caramel Bear" C.J. Shine vs. Tony Esteem, Riot On The River Tournament:  I figured on one of the Arch Town Mercenaries(Esteem & LaFleur) advancing to the next round via chicanery so it would be a fan favorite-vs.-rulebreaker bout...I went with Esteem here and Billy McNeil to beat LaFleur, though it could have easily gone either way.  This was another setup where members of a tag team could end up as opponents in the quarterfinals.  I'm still waiting for Shine's title shot since he scored an upset win over Makaze a little over a year ago.  Shine has been branching out to central Illinois in recent times and gaining valuable experience in the process.  Esteem tried to slow him down with his traditional roughhouse tactics, but Shine wiped him out with a huge LARIATOOOOO for the win in 8:00.

Billy McNeil vs. Jimmi LaFleur, Riot On The River Tournament:  With Shine winning, Billy's chances seemed to diminish (as noted above); the winner of this bout would take on Shine in the quarters.  LaFleur tried to keep McNeil grounded by focusing his attack on the arm, but the experience edge was too much for the rookie to overcome on this night.  McNeil took to the air and hit a flying elbowdrop off the top rope to the back of LaFleur, scoring the three-count in 9:15.  Second quarterfinal confirmed:  McNeil vs. Shine!

Shiroi Senshi vs. The Snitch, Riot On The River Tournament:  Snitch gave Chris Roedel his usual lengthy introductory spiel.  My money was on the masked guy in this one...*cough*  Someone pointed out their own theory about Senshi's identity...they may be on to something, but you can't truly say unless you see the person take off the mask in front of you, you know?  With all the rumors and gossip going around these days, you never can tell.  The match seemed like it could go in either direction, but Snitch came out on top with an Olympic Slam in 9:35...meaning he'll move on to face Jackal in the next round.  The two competitors shook hands afterwards, but Senshi leveled Snitch with a superkick before leaving the ring.

Mike Outlaw vs. Tag Team Champion Viktor Von Stein, Riot On The River Tournament:  Outlaw faced a tough test in round one against the largest man in the tourney.  Outlaw had already earned a future D-1 Title shot against Jayden Dominic Rose in the gauntlet match at FUBAR and was hoping to add to his accolades for 2018.  However, it turned out Surge wasn't the only contender Makaze was worried about as he stuck his nose into this match as well...his distraction nearly led to a win for Von Stein as he crushed Outlaw with an avalanche and Vader Bomb for a close near-fall!  Adrian Surge ran out to ringside to fend off Makaze, chasing him to the backstage area...in the meantime, Outlaw managed to make a comeback, lifting the big man on his shoulders for his version of the Go 2 Sleep!  He followed up with the mafia kick, scoring the victory in 13:07!

The quarterfinals are set for August:  Jackal vs. Snitch, McNeil vs. Shine, Outlaw vs. Shadowz, and Outtkast vs. Trust.  We shall see how things shape up from there...and August will also feature the championship match between Makaze and Surge.  Before we get there, Dynamo returns to the Concordia Turners Gymnasium in St. Louis, MO this Saturday the 28th...Outlaw gets his shot at Jayden Dominic Rose and the D-1 Title!

WWE NXT

-Commentators:  Mauro Ranallo, Nigel McGuinness, & "Showtime" Percy Watson.
-NXT North American Champion Adam Cole d. Sean Maluta(non-title) after the Last Shot v2.0(Shining Wizard to the back of the head) (2:15).  Cole spoke his mind after the match and was met by Ricochet...Ricochet felt like Cole was running from his toughest challengers and wanted to face him for the belt at Takeover Brooklyn.  Cole simply responded that he wouldn't lower himself to facing Ricochet...even after Ricochet reasserted his view that Cole is a coward, he refused to get back in the ring to answer Ricochet's challenge.  NXT Tag Team Champions Roderick Strong & Kyle O'Reilly arrived to back up Cole, but then The War Raiders(Todd Hanson & Raymond Rowe) stopped them from leaving...they tried to go through the crowd, but one exit was blocked by Moustache Mountain(Tyler Bate & Trent  Seven)!  The Undisputed Era trio finally made their getaway...
-Earlier today, backstage:  General Manager S. William Regal presided over the contract signing for the Takeover bout between NXT Women's Champion Shayna Baszler and Kairi Sane.  Shayna objected to the portrayal of it as a rematch from the Mae Young Classic finals, saying she had beaten Kairi since then and she was a different competitor now.  Kairi simply told Shayna that they both know that she can beat her.
-Lacey Evans d. Tenilla Price with the Woman's Right(knockout punch) (2:04).
-Backstage:  Bianca Belair was interviewed; she said she didn't feel a need to prove herself like the other women and she'll get what she deserves(the title) once she returns to action from her recent injury.
-Backstage:  Shayna got into a confrontation with Candice LeRae over her strong comments about the rest of the NXT women's division.
-Tommaso Ciampa d. Aleister Black to win the NXT Title.  The referee was knocked down and Ciampa brought the belt into the ring, but Johnny Gargano ran in to stop him with a superkick.  Gargano tried to pull the belt away from Ciampa, but accidentally struck Black with it in the process; Ciampa threw Gargano out of the ring and delivered a sitout Pedigree as the referee recovered to make the three-count (22:19)!
-Next week:  Ethan Carter III vs. Kona Reeves.

PGP Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about the Proving Ground Pro show on Saturday, June 30th at The Boar's Nest in Athens, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

Both options for June 30th were lengthy trips:  Either PGP or Cape Championship Wrestling.  I would have been able to carpool with Ben Simon, but I chose Proving Ground Pro for the evening and carpooled with Jason Cline and his son.  Attendance at the show got somewhat awkward when Michael Elgin was added to the lineup, but it didn't really affect my perception of the show to any great extent.  Take that however you wish.

The Boar's Nest is a bar, but the show was held outside on the patio; there was a roof over the proceedings so we had some shade; I initially wondered if we entered the wrong bar door when we went in and found ourselves among the wrestlers...heh.

Your ring announcers were Sarah Rose and Robby Leach; your referees were Jason Pemberton and some other dude who I didn't know.

Savanna Stone vs. "The Little Blue Dragon" Tootie Lynn Ramsey vs. Sophie King vs. "The Southwest Spitfire" Valentina Loca for the Zero-1 USA Women's Title:  Originally Savanna was scheduled to defend against Holidead(who had to cancel a few days before the show) and Tootie and Valentina were to compete in a triple threat bout with Rahne Victoria(who was out with a minor injury).  As a result, the women were all put in this four-corner bout with the belt on the line; as is tradition in these multi-way title matches, the champion is at a disadvantage as she doesn't have to be pinned or made to submit to lose her title.  I think it was the first time that Valentina had worked with any of the three women, though she'd done an angle with Savanna at a previous show.  Only Sophie worked as a rulebreaker in this one, which made for an awkward dynamic.  Despite that, the action was really good; I've seen Savanna and Tootie in particular have some strong one-on-one bouts in recent months.  The finish saw Savanna even the score with Sophie, scoring the rollup pin in 6:56 to retain her title.

Paco Gonzalez vs. Gyasi:  I'd seen Gyasi a few times at Zero-1 and PGP; I believe he's a Black & Brave Academy trainee.  Paco was clearly the guy with the fan support on this night; the closer one gets to Paco's hometown of Chicago, the more popular he seems to get.  Paco had a slight edge in experience and agility, but Gyasi resorted to underhanded tactics to score the win...Paco had him set up for the fireman's-carry Michinoku Driver, but Gyasi got out of the move and rolled him up with a handful of tights(HEEL~!) in 9:31.

Tyler Matrix vs. Logan James vs. "The Millenial" Danny Adams:  I had heard a lot of positive reviews of newcomer Logan James but this was my first time seeing him in action.  The match got off to a quick start as Adams jumped Matrix in the aisleway, which brought out James to kick-start the contest.  Once the match officially began, it was a relatively short bout...of course in multi-way affairs, anyone can steal a fall at just about any moment.  In this case, experience won the day as Adams pinned James after an elevated inverted DDT in 5:11.

The Dixieland Destroyer & Duke Cornell vs. The Top Guys(Adam Slade & Kevin Giza):  I had seen Slade & Giza at Glory Pro shows in the past year; they're both entertaining characters.  I hadn't seen the masked Destroyer in a VERY long time; given recent current events, he has toned the Stars & Bars motif of his attire WAY down.  I had only seen Cornell a handful of times, usually as part of the Guns & Beer team with Bo Gott and Joey Anderson.  Slade & Giza had trouble dealing with the significant size difference in the early going, but they finally managed to isolate Cornell for a while.  Destroyer got a tag and cleaned house, but made the mistake of tagging Cornell back into the match to finish things.  The Top Guys managed to get Destroyer out of play just long enough for Giza to roll up Cornell with feet on the ropes(HEEL~!) for the pin in 8:26.

"Unbreakable" Michael Elgin vs. "The Indestructible" Calvin Tankman:  Cue HOSS BATTLE~!  Elgin has dropped weight in recent times but it hasn't taken away from his upper body strength...something he would need against a massive opponent like Tankman.  On top of that, both guys are capable of leaving their feet when the situation calls for it...in fact, Elgin pulled off a flying rana off the second rope with the aid of one of the overhang beams.  Tankman took control with his sheer size and went for a Vader Bomb(R.I.P. Big Van Vader), only for Elgin to powerbomb him down from the turnbuckles!  Elgin went for the cover after that, but only got 2 1/2.  Elgin made several attempts to lift Tankman into his signature sitout powerbomb...he finally got him up in a double-underhook powerbomb and followed up with a running senton for the win in 10:38!

Promoter Jesse Matthews addressed the fans at this point, announcing that former Franchise Champion "Dirdey" Jake Dirden would return to Proving Ground Pro at their next show in July.  I suspect he'll want his title back...

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Two Pepsis.

Jake Lander vs. Mike Outlaw for the Cutting Edge Title:  Previous titleholder Firelord Draconis had retired and vacated the title in April; Lander defeated Gyasi and Paco Gonzalez in a four-man tournament in May to become the new champion.  A lot happened in the closing stretch of a very good match; it looked like Outlaw was on the way to a title win after he hit his Go 2 Sleep variation and the mafia kick, scoring the pinfall in 9:20...but the referee had been bumped just prior to that sequence and missed Lander's foot being on the bottom rope.  A second official told the first what had happened and the match was restarted...Lander kicked the belt out of Outlaw's grasp(it looked like the belt hit Outlaw in the process), then delivered a rolling Death Valley Driver and close-range superkick for the win in 0:20 of the restart (9:40 total) to retain his title.  There was plenty of controversy to go around in this one and I'm sure Outlaw will be looking for a rematch.

Barackus & Mo Atlas vs. Scott Keyes & Dan Liplock:  The basic story of the match was that the new team of Barackus & Atlas(since dubbed "The Heavyweight Club") were on the same page and Keyes and Liplock, well, WEREN'T.  Barackus was the only competitor in the match who I knew fairly well; Atlas is nearly his equal in terms of sheer size.  That meant a long night for the opposing team; on top of that, Liplock seemed intent on looking out for his own interests while Keyes attempted to play things straight.  The issues between the team members led to their downfall as Barackus pinned Keyes in 6:50 after a running cross-bodyblock(OOF).  Post-match, Keyes and Liplock argued and finally came to blows, ending with Keyes decking Liplock before leaving the ring.

"The Leader Of The Pack" Stephen Wolf vs. Kevin Lee Davidson for the Franchise Title:  K.L.D.'s size and power seemed to make him the favorite on paper, but Wolf had been a strong champion in central Illinois and I was not expecting a title change going into this show.  It was just a matter of how Wolf would fight...going aerial seemed to be his best bet, as trading strikes with the much larger K.L.D. didn't seem like an effective tactic.  The two worked very well together and I'm sure this won't be the last time they cross paths.  (I recall two similar competitors named Marcellus Gaines and Todd Letterman facing each other a while back...)  On that note, Davidson delivered the Endzone Spike(pumphandle Michinoku Driver) but Wolf shockingly kicked out at two-and-a-half.  Wolf had one last gasp of offense, but got caught in K.L.D.'s spinebuster and that was enough for the three-count and a NEWWWWW Franchise Champion in 11:36!  With the big man on top of Proving Ground Pro, it'll take a truly special kind of opponent to knock him off his throne...

I'm not QUITE as behind as I once was...I made it through June!  WOO~!  The summer isn't as slow as it normally is, as there's a lot happening in July and August...see you around.
