WOE Special Comment
Now, as promised, a special comment about the Wrestling Over Everything show on Sunday, September 9th at the River's Edge Community Center in Centreville, Illinois.
DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.
Any rebuilding process for a wrestling promotion takes time if it's truly effective; I saw it with Dynamo Pro in the past few years. That will be the case if WOE's plans truly work out and they build their audience...attendance has been hit-and-miss recently, including some shows with scary low attendance. Running on Sunday usually leaves them unopposed, but October and November would be unfortunate for them as they ended up running on the same days as Glory Pro. The event was listed as starting at 5 PM; things kicked off closer to 5:20.
Your ring announcer was Ben Simon; your referees were Shaft & Jason Pemberton.
New Heavyweight Champion "The Incomparable" Deacon Cash kicked off the show...he wanted to defend his title but former titleholder "2.0" Da'Marius Jones wasn't there (plus Cash had been injured at the MMWA show the previous night). Cash said that when the rematch took place the following month, he wanted it to be an I Quit Match...all righty then.
LaMarcus Clinton vs. Reilly MaGuire: MaGuire was a substitute for "Li'l Hollywood Hills" Everett Connors and in the unusual position of being the rulebreaker in a match. He attempted the slow down the high-flyer with a belly-to-back suplex onto the ring apron(#HARDESTPARTOFTHERING), then focused his attack on L.M.C.'s leg. Clinton fought through the pain to rally, delivering a Codebreaker before going to the top rope to finish with the 450 Splash in 4:41.
The Sabotage Squad(Krispy 2 Pop & John Boi) vs. No Coast(Sid Holland & J.C.J.) for the Tag Team Titles, street fight: This was set up by the Squad's complaints about a lack of competition, leading to the debut appearance of No Coast in August. CUE THE PLUNDER~! We saw chairs, a kendo stick, crutches, a trash can and lid, and a baking pan used as weapons in this one...it was a format that would seem to benefit the champions, but No Coast gave as well as they got. They managed to isolate John Boi and Sid stunned him with brass knuckles, then J.C.J. followed up with a Shining Wizard for the win in 12:18 for NEWWWWW WOE Tag Team Champions!
Intermission~! Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm): Orange Gatorade.
The Enforcer vs. Jake Prater: Enforcer had been wanting a spot on the WOE roster, so The Landlord had been putting him through the wringer with tough opponents and this night was no exception. Prater finished him off in short order with a piledriver in 1:41...then decided his night wasn't quite over and called out The Big Texan for an impromptu matchup.
The Big Texan vs. Jake Prater: This hoss feud continues to rage at WOE...much like Texan's feud with Moondog Rover at the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance, neither man has been above a bit of rule-bending or weapon usage to achieve victory. Prater scored his second win in a row after bashing Texan in the head with a chair outside the ring, rolling him in to get the three-count in 5:22.
"The Notorious" P.T. Beckham vs. "The Unholy Father" Richard Faith for the Interstate Title: Beckham had won the title from Faith in August and Faith immediately invoked his rematch clause for this bout. However, Faith grew frustrated quickly with his inability to put the champion away...after scoring a 2 1/2-count after his Blackhole Slam finisher, he blatantly leveled Beckham with his good book for the DQ in 6:13. After the match, Faith proclaimed that he was putting the Interstate Title behind him and looking to bigger and better things...perhaps a run at the Heavyweight Championship?
Before the main event, senior official Jason Pemberton announced that he was stepping away from wrestling to focus on his personal life...he's had a rough few months on the home front and I wish him the best.
Brandon Espinosa vs. "K-Dos" Kyle King: Espinosa was in position for a title shot a few months ago before Leone Mephisto left the promotion and forfeited the championship. These guys had a solid main event and the new champ Deacon Cash made an appearance to watch his potential contenders...Espy won via brainbuster in 9:40. Cash already had his rematch with Da'Marius Jones scheduled, but would Espy be the next in line for whoever won that one?
To close the show, Landlord personally thanked Jason Pemberton for his officiating job for WOE...then gave him a Rock Bottom, because why not.
I don't have as much free time as I once did, plus it just isn't as fun as it once was to write these commentaries. I'll get to them eventually, but it'll just take a little while. The sheer amount of wrestling content available to the average fan is staggering nowadays and it would take a superhuman effort to absorb it all. Meanwhile, my financial situation is somewhere between Defcon-1 and Defcon-0...yes, again.
The next several weeks look like this:
-Sunday 10/28: Rampage Championship Wrestling in Granite City, IL (HEY THAT'S TECHNICALLY TODAY)
-Friday 11/2: Pro Wrestling Epic in Brownstown, IL
-Saturday 11/3: World League Wrestling in Troy, MO; Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in Swansea, IL
-Sunday 11/4: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in St. Louis, MO(4 Hands Brewery)
-Saturday 11/10: Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance in St. Louis, MO
-Sunday 11/11: Glory Pro Wrestling in Collinsville, IL; WOE in Centreville, IL
-Friday 11/16: St. Louis Anarchy in Alton, IL
-Saturday 11/17: SICW in East Carondelet, IL
-Saturday 11/24: MMWA in Lemay, MO
That's my special comment for this, the fifty-fifth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2018. Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

Comedy Part 815: Y'Ever See A Carp Gasp For Air?
Location: Mason City Limits
Emcee: Buddah Eskew
After: Zach Boblitt
Before: Joe "The Animal" Lancey
Much appreciation to both Buddah for booking me on this showcase and Joe for doing most of the driving at a time when I wasn't sure if I would have enough gas money for the trip. It was my first time at the club and we have a Small But Mighty(tm) audience who were very energetic(if a bit chatty at times). Buddah said my time frame was 12-15 minutes and I had a really strong set, which I was happy about since first impressions are important for one's first appearance at a venue(especially a comedy club). Unfortunately club manager Chris Spreyer was out of town, but hopefully the good reviews get back to him and I'll be able to return to Mason City Limits in the near future. Shoutouts to the other comedians on the show: Whitney Devine, Will O'Donnell, and Ron Finger!

Unfortunately club manager Chris Spreyer was out of town, but hopefully the good reviews get back to him and I'll be able to return to Mason City Limits in the near future. Shoutouts to the other comedians on the show: Whitney Devine, Will O'Donnell, and Ron Finger!

With all sides even, he believed that he would win the title from Dunne...but the heckling from the fans threw him off his game and led to his defeat. He never got a proper rematch and "The Scottish Supernova" Noam Dar was just handed an opportunity he didn't deserve. That brought out Dar for a confrontation, but General Manager Johnny Saint ordered both of them back to his office RIGHT NOW. (When Johnny Saint tells you to do something, you do it.)
-Backstage: Travis Banks was interviewed about his experience in NXT UK...his primary goal is to get some payback on Joe & Mark Coffey.

Next out was "The Velveteen Dream" Patrick Clark, who said the people wanted an "experience" at Wargames and wanted Regal to say HIS name. Cue Lars Sullivan, who believed he deserved the next title shot as well...Lars didn't think much of Dream's retort and throttled him. Cue Nikki Cross to herald the arrival of "him", who turned out to be Aleister Black running roughshod over the security guards on a beeline for the ring. Ciampa wisely retreated from the ring as Black entered, dropping Sullivan with the Black Mass(spinning kick) before confronting Regal: "Where is he?" Regal had no idea who Black was wanting, but Black turned around into a superkick from Johnny Gargano! The show closed with Gargano's statement: "I'm right here!" I guess that answers the question of who attacked Aleister Black...

Aero Star said he could help him, bringing in Drago with a little gift: The Gauntlet Of The Gods! MMWA Special Comment
Now, as promised, a special comment about the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance show on Saturday, September 8th at the South Broadway Athletic Club in St. Louis, Missouri.
DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.
After my 41st birthday, I had a doubleheader wrestling weekend with MMWA and Wrestling Over Everything. Broadway usually packs in the crowds, even on its off-months...finding a spot to watch the show where I'm not blocking anyone's view can be a tricky prospect. I've never been the type to seek out a front-row seat for that reason...sometimes I need to get up and move around, that's all.
Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus(now in that role on a permanent basis with Ben Simon pursuing other opportunities); your referees were Nick Ridenour, Jay King, and Shaft.
"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson vs. The Big Texan: This was a surprising choice to start the show as two former Heavyweight Champions locked up. This was one of three matches that had been announced prior to the show, the other two being the title bouts for the evening. These two had crossed paths many times in the past, including a match in Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling where Jackson put his career on the line against Texan's mask...Texan lost his mask and wrestled as Big Jim Hoffarth for a while before voluntarily going back under the hood. Gary Jackson Fashion Watch(tm): Brown coat and orange trunks. As it turned out, the match didn't go long before Moondog Rover made his presence known...he pulled Jackson out of the ring and made a beeline for his long-time rival Texan, leading to the referee calling for the bell as other officials tried to separate the two. The official decision seemed unclear at first, but it was announced as a DQ win for Jackson in 5:40 due to Rover interfering against Jackson first. It was announced that Moondog and Texan would get a chance to battle out their differences later in the night.
At this point in the show, we got an unexpected visit from "Volatile" Curtis Wylde and Wyldefyre. Wylde bragged about his exploits in SICW, leading to another surprise visit from "Your Canadian Hero" Sean Vincent. Of course these two are no strangers to each other and had a long feud in SICW...the confrontation led to a match being set up for the October show. It seems like the MMWA and SICW are going to be working a bit more closely together, as I believe the upcoming Multi-State Tag Team Titles will be defended in both promotions as well as New Breed Wrestling. Speaking of tag team wrestling...
Khayman & "The Caramel Bear" C.J. Shine(w/ Abigail) vs. The Professionals(Shawn Santel & Mauler McDarby): Khayman and Shine were teaming for the first time against an established duo who had held the Dynamo Pro Tag Titles and will be competing in the match that will crown the first Multi-State Tag Champs. Khayman and Shine had been in tag team competition recently with other partners in MMWA; Shine had been joining forces with The Snitch while Khayman had been working with Frodo "The Ghost" Meyer. My money would have been on The Professionals based on tag team experience alone...but things would turn out a bit differently. Santel & McDarby got frustrated and brought their shillelagh into play, so Khayman retaliated by spitting mist in their eyes...that led to the official calling for a double DQ in 12:46.
Intermission~! Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm): Pepsi, water, soft preztel with cheese.
"The" Ace Hawkins vs. A.J. Williams(w/ Cruiserweight Champion "2.0" Da'Marius Jones): Jones had been scheduled to defend against the returning former champion Hawkins, but Jones decided that Hawkins needed to earn his title shot...that led to Williams wrestling Hawkins in his place. I'm a fan of both guys as in-ring competitors and they had a tremendous matchup...Jones ran interference for his partner for most of the bout, of course. Williams went for the 450 Splash but Hawkins got his knees up...Ace could have gotten the pinfall but the referee was occupied with Jones. A.J. connected with the superkick out of nowhere and went for the pin, but the referee was STILL with Jones...by the time he turned around, Ace kicked out at 2 1/2. A.J. went to the top rope again, but Ace cut him off and nailed the top-rope Frankensteiner! Hawkins took out Jones, then capitalized with the somersault Ace Crusher to get the duke in 11:12! Jones vs. Hawkins would happen for real at the October show!
"Rough Cut" Rick Ruby(w/ Rough-Cut Diamond) vs. "The Righteous One" Johnny Park: From that fast-paced cruiserweight bout, we shifted gears to this matchup. Park has been throwing around open challenges and often getting more competition than he was expecting...that was the case here against a much larger and more experienced opponent. It wasn't exactly a technical masterpiece, nor did I expect it to be one...Ruby put him away with a belly-to-back suplex into a uranagi(aka John Cena's Protobomb) in 8:52.
Moondog Rover vs. The Big Texan, no-DQ match: It feels like these two have been battling for the better part of the past few years...Moondog won the tournament for the vacant Heavyweight Title and Texan was the one who ended his reign. The situation was already out of hand earlier in the show and they picked right up where they left off. Texan had no problem with using foreign objects to his advantage, hitting Moondog with his own bone as well as brass knuckles. Rover battled back and attempted to take out Texan's knee, but Texan was able to retaliate with a huge chokeslam...he climbed the ropes and nailed the big splash off the second rope, putting his feet on the ropes for extra leverage(no-DQ!) to win in 11:38. Moondog didn't take kindly to Shaft's officiating job and attacked him after the match, leading to Commissioner Jim Harris suspending him for a month. (Unfortunately Drew forgot to mention at the start of the match that it was no-DQ, leading to the fans getting on Shaft's case for ignoring the use of the weapons...Drew did mention it after the match was over.)
"Da Bomb" Brian James vs. "The Incomparable" Deacon Cash vs. "P.O.D." Damion Cortess for the Heavyweight Title: Cash and Cortess had been battling for months and often getting in each other's way in their respective pursuits of the big belt, so all the factors were put in one match. Cash looked rather small next to the other two, but he picked his spots when the other two were focused on each other. Cortess was able to eliminate his rival from contention by slamming him off the top rope to the outside of the ring, leading to a nasty landing as Cash hit the edge of the ring on the way down! (That left him injured and unable to defend his WOE Heavyweight Title the following night.) While Cortess' attention was on Cash, James took advantage of the situation and dropped Cortess with the sitout gourdbuster...that allowed James to score the winning pinfall to retain his title in 10:37!
The night wasn't quite over as Gary Jackson made his entrance, challenging James to a title bout at the October show...those two are no strangers to each other and most people have honestly lost track of how many times Gary has been the MMWA Heavyweight Champion. Would The Great One regain his throne? We would find out in a month's time...

Dynamo Special Comment
Now, as promised, a special comment about the Dynamo Pro Wrestling show on Saturday, August 25th at the Sports Academy in Glen Carbon, Illinois.
DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.
In a month where Dynamo had three shows, we knew zero matches going into the night. It was an unfortunate situation, especially when it comes to a venue where Dynamo had admittedly struggled to draw in the past. The main focus was the hype for the upcoming Riot On The River Tournament finals as well as the Makaze-Adrian Surge feud over the Heavyweight Title...how we would get there would be addressed over the course of the night.
Your ring announcer was Chris Roedel, your referee was Scott Ramsey, and your video commentators were Luke Roberts & Patrick Brandmeyer.
"Li'l N8" Nathen Edwards vs. "The Mercenary" Graham Bell vs. The Snitch vs. "The American Bully" Kyle Hammer vs. Ezra Zealous vs. Billy McNeil, six-way dance: Amidst several relative newcomers to the Dynamo mix, we had two of the remaining four competitors in the Riot On The River Tournament as McNeil and Snitch would meet in the semifinals. This was as chaotic as you might think, though it lasted quite a while before any eliminations took place. Hammer scored the first elimination, pinning Zealous in 10:57 after the Kyledriver(Mick Foley-style piledriver). Bell took out Hammer with a gourdbuster onto the knees and eliminated him in 11:21. It looked like we would get a bunch of rapid-fire eliminations, but then several more minutes passed before another pinfall occurred. In a surprise, McNeil was the next to go as Edwards scored an upset pinfall after his version of the Death Valley Driver in 17:42. Bell took out Edwards with his kneedrive curbstomp in 20:04, leaving The Snitch and Bell as the unlikely final two...but Snitch took the opportunity to quickly roll up Bell with a handful of tights in 20:07 for the final win! The masked man may have been in the right place at the right time, but he picked up some valuable momentum heading into the final stretch of Riot On The River.
Tag Team Champions The Agents Of Chaos(Viktor Von Stein & Xavier Shadowz) vs. "Lights Out" Adrian Surge & Jackal, non-title: With "Mr. Mustache" Ricky Rodriguez not in attendance for the night, Jackal teamed up with recent ally Surge instead. Surge had crossed paths with the Agents on several occasions prior to this, especially since they had run interference on behalf of Heavyweight Champion Makaze. Surge and Jackal were on the same side in a recent six-man tag, but this was their first outing as a two-man unit...the team experience may have been the deciding factor in this one. Von Stein's recent path of rage(to borrow a phrase) gave his team some added momentum as well...the champs isolated Surge long enough to hit their fireman's-carry Flapjack/Diamond Cutter combo, allowing Von Stein to pin Surge for the win in 7:45. While Surge had scored a recent non-title win over Makaze, he had struggled to sustain any momentum since that time...and it was usually either Makaze or his cronies who had a hand in his recent woes.
Outtkast vs. Reilly MaGuire: The rookie MaGuire had a tough test ahead of him in the form of the local veteran and multi-time titleholder. He's looked solid in the handful of outings I've seen, but some things will simply take some time to fall into place. MaGuire gave Outtkast a good fight, but missed a moonsault off the second turnbuckle and Outtkast put him away with the Case Study in 6:33.
"The Valedictorian" Keon Option vs. Tony Esteem: D-1 Champion Mike Outlaw joined the commentary team for this matchup; he knows Option very well as they started their careers around the same time. Jimmi LaFleur made a fashionably late entrance, but his assistance wasn't quite enough to tip the scales in Esteem's favor; Option scored the quick pin with a modified crucifix on the mat in 5:12.
Camaro Jackson vs. Jimmi LaFleur(w/ Tony Esteem): With LaFleur already in the ring area, his match logically came next. Unfortunately for Jackson, that meant Esteem remained at ringside and the numbers game was not in his favor. At one point Esteem delivered a cheapshot behind the referee's back and LaFleur followed up with the reverse Stunner, but Jackson somehow kicked out at 2 1/2. Jackson fought the odds but they caught up to him in the end...as Jackson attempted a re-entry sunset flip, LaFleur knelt down to block and held onto Esteem for illegal leverage as the ref made the three-count in 7:48.
Intermission~! Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm): A post-show Pepsi courtesy of Jimmi LaFleur (thanks!).
Brady James vs. "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz: James previously competed with his real name reversed as James Brady, but has since switched it back. He had looked impressive in his early outings, but on this night he was up against a former Dynamo Pro Heavyweight Champion and SICW Classic Champion (to say nothing of the championships he has held internationally). Cruz spoke on his disdain for the level of competition across the ring, but James nearly caught him napping on more than one occasion. James somehow managed to kick out after Cruz's pop-up Diamond Cutter, a move that Cruz has used to win matches in the past. The experience edge would be a bit too much for James to overcome as Cruz finally put him down with the superkick in 5:18...then delivered a post-match Cruz Control(swinging fisherman buster) for good measure.
"The Empress Of Evil" Rahne Victoria vs. Sophie King(w/ The Snitch) for the Women's Title: With Savanna Stone and Tootie Lynn Ramsey out of town, we had a rare battle of rulebreakers over the newly-minted championship. Sophie was Snitch's first manager(going by Sophie Darling at the time), so he accompanied her to the ring on this night. That put Rahne in the odd position of being the pseudo-fan favorite for the evening and she expanded her repertoire a bit, including a nicely-executed rana. Sophie attempted to slow the pace by focusing her attack on the champion's arm, but Rahne retained her title via spinebuster in 8:45.
"The Wind Of Destruction" Makaze vs. "The Caramel Bear" C.J. Shine for the Heavyweight Title: Shine scored an upset win over Makaze about a year and a half ago, so he knew he was capable of beating the champion despite being the underdog. Of course, that was a very different Makaze...this one was capable of just about anything to hang onto his title, including some underhanded and downright dangerous tactics. Makaze focused on slowing the pace to his liking, but Shine was able to rally with a re-entry Diamond Cutter for a near-fall. Shane pushed his advantage and got another close two-count after a flying knee strike. Makaze cut him off and delivered the Northern Lights fisherman suplex, but Shine surprisingly kicked out at 2 1/2. At that point the champion seemed to snap, bringing in a leather strap and choking out the challenger until he was disqualified in 9:09...of course while Shine won the match, the title did not change hands on the DQ. Adrian Surge hit the ring with a strap of his own to run off the champion...but Makaze returned with the locker room's rulebreakers as backup. Surge had plenty of his own backup, of course, as the fan favorites made their appearance and everyone had to separate the champion and contender as they brawled! Surge challenged Makaze to a lumberjack strap match at the next Concordia Turners show(September 21st)...Makaze didn't want to accept, but co-promoter Crystal Young said that the match would happen or Makaze would be stripped of the title!
Quite a bit was set up for coming attractions and not just the Riot On The River Tournament...I'll get to those events in due time. Life stuff is taking precedence at the moment as my credit cards are becoming a bit less than useable...I may have to ix-nay any major road trips for the time being unless I can bum rides.
At any rate, here's what's coming up in the next month and a half or so:
-Sunday 10/28: Rampage Championship Wrestling in Granite City, IL
-Friday 11/2: Pro Wrestling Epic in Brownstown, IL
-Saturday 11/3: WLW in Troy, MO; SICW in Swansea, IL
-Sunday 11/4: DPW in St. Louis, MO(4 Hands Brewery)
-Saturday 11/10: MMWA in St. Louis, MO
-Sunday 11/11: Glory Pro in Collinsville, IL; Wrestling Over Everything in Centreville, IL
-Friday 11/16: St. Louis Anarchy in Alton, IL
-Saturday 11/17: SICW in East Carondelet, IL
-Saturday 11/24: MMWA in Lemay, MO
