I took high school and college Spanish; I should be able to navigate a Cinco festival. At least that's what I told myself. The Google Map directions didn't take into account that the neighborhood would be barricaded off...so I had a bit of a hike from my parking spot to the wrestling ring setup. I got there right at showtime, so that worked out well. They drew a pretty good crowd of onlookers to the free outdoor show, so success in that department.
A.J. Williams was conspicuous by his absence and the main event was hyped as a triple threat Heavyweight Title match at least once during the event...it just became a one-on-one bout.
Your ring announcer was Ben Simon, your referees were Nick Ridenour and Commissioner Jim Harris.
Jackson Whitechapel & Sean Orleans(w/ J-Mal Swagg) vs. Super Electro & Everett Connors for the Tag Team Titles: Electro & Connors earned this title shot by virtue of their victory over...um, by virtue of their impressive performance against...err, I'll get back to you on that. This was the first appearance by Electro in quite some time. This got a TON of time(even longer than the main event!) and, given the experience level of the participants, I'm not sure why. Connors and Orleans are both extremely new and even Whitechapel's only been wrestling for about a year or so. Though Orleans was in there a bit much for a character who's essentially a manager. Also thought it was funny that Swagg was in his wrestling gear despite only being a cornerman for this show. Just saying that this could have gotten the point across in about half the time it got...liked the double-team curbstomp finisher, at any rate. Everett was declared unable to continue at the 19:31 mark(!)
"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson vs. Barackus: Barackus is undefeated in MMWA competition and Gary's a top title contender, so something had to give here. On second though, it really didn't...while Gary was able to knock the big man off his feet, the two fought to a double countout in 6:48. While the official clearly made a ten-count with the two competitors outside the ring, it was still announced as a no-contest for some reason...oh well. Gary had a ringside fan translate THE RULES~! into espanol for the benefit of the ringsiders.
Ace Hawkins vs. Andrew "The Wolf" Wilder for the Jr. Heavyweight Title: Commissioner Harris stepped out of officiating retirement to referee this bout. These two had a great no-DQ bout a few months ago when Hawkins won the title...that was followed up with the double turn that put us where we are today. Most of MMWA's heels seem to be aligned with Brandon Espinosa's Elitism either directly(Ace, Lynn Mephisto, Barackus) or loosely(Orleans and company, Chase King). Ace resorted to a blatant BELTing and DQ to save the title in 9:56, but Wilder came back with his Call Of The Wild inverted neckbreaker to regain face(so to speak).
Brandon Espinosa vs. Da'Marius Jones for the Heavyweight Title: Billed from Mexico, Jones was a big crowd favorite. He's looked really good considering he's only been wrestling for about a year; on top of that, he's started to branch out a bit with some Dynamo appearances. Good competitive matchup ended with the Espinosa brainbuster in 16:43.
Good to get some new eyes on the wrestling product; a lot of people simply aren't aware of independent wrestling in their area. If you wonder why I'm constantly pushing the shows to people, that would be why. :)
I'm the type that wants to see everything, so it's kinda rough when shows happen on the same night. That'll be the case next weekend when Dynamo and MMWA both run on Saturday night...can't be in two places at once, though.
Part three forthcoming...
Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.
