-Commentators:  Tom Phillips, Jerry Lawler, & Byron Saxton.
-Roman Reigns d. Kane by countout when Kane walked away from the match (6:24 aired).
-Damien Sandow d. Curtis Axel with the You're Welcome(full nelson slam) (2:30).
-Ryback d. Luke Harper with the Shellshock (6:04 aired).  After the match, Bray Wyatt attacked Ryback again.
-Antonio Cesaro & Tyson Kidd(w/ Natalya Neidhart) d. WWE Tag Team Champions Big E Langston & Kofi Kingston(w/ Xavier Woods) by DQ when Woods interfered to break up Cesaro's pin attempt on Big E (9:58 aired).
-Women's Champion Nikki Bella d. Cameron Lynn(non-title) with the Rack Attack(torture-rack drop) (3:57).
-WWE Champion Seth Rollins(w/ Jamie Knoble & Joey Mercury) d. Dean Ambrose(non-title) with the layout DDT (10:06 aired); Kane made his way to ringside during the bout.  The united Authority beat down Ambrose after the match until Reigns made the save.

Main Event + Lucha Underground

WWE Main Event

-Commentators:  Rich Brennan & John Bradshaw Layfield.
-The Prime Time Players(Titus O'Neil & Darren Young) d. The Ascension(Konnor O'Brian & Rick Viktor) when Young pinned Viktor after the Gut Check(fireman's-carry double-knee gutbuster) (3:44).
-Stardust d. Jack Swagger with the Beautiful Disaster kick (7:56 aired).

Lucha Underground Episode 25

-Commentators:  Matt Striker & Vampiro.
-Backstage:  Promoter Dario Cueto spoke with The Crew(Cortez Castro, Mr. Cisco, & Bael)...Cueto was disappointed in them for losing the Trios Title tournament finale.  He said he would show them some real motivation...and introduced them to his "brother" in the basement cell.
-Fenix d. Killshot with the Fire Thunder Driver(sitout Tombstone) (5:59).
-Backstage:  Cueto met with Drago about his "unique opportunity"...after that, he spoke with LU Champion Prince Puma about potentially ending Drago's career.  Shawn Hernandez confronted Cueto about putting him in a triple threat match with two rivals, but Cueto told him that the winner of the match would get a future title shot.  Puma overheard the whole exchange, including Hernandez's statement that he didn't care about Puma...only his own situation.
-Argenis vs. Famous B vs. Ricky Mandel vs. Vinny Massaro ended in a no-contest when El Texano Jr. attacked all four men and the referee (0:13).  He complained about the "fan" who attacked him last week(Shawn Daivari) and challenged him to meet him in the ring.
-Backstage:  Cueto crossed paths with Marty "The Moth" Martinez who was looking for an opportunity in Lucha Underground.
-Shawn Hernandez won a triple threat match with Brian Cage and King Cuerno when he pinned Cuerno after a sitout Dominator (4:56).  Marty The Moth tried to run into the ring and took a beating for his efforts.
-Earlier today:  Vampiro did a sitdown interview with Trios Champions Son Of Havoc, Angélico, & Ivelisse Velez...leading to an argument over who was the "team captain".
-Prince Puma(w/ Konnan) d. Drago to retain the LU Title in a title-vs.-career match.  The referee was bumped and didn't see Drago have a visual fall after a Canadian Destroyer; Shawn Hernandez entered the ring and took out Drago with a Pounce(something Puma didn't appreciate).  Puma reluctantly finished with an inverted suplex into a sitout Tombstone (10:29).  After the match, Drago left the temple under the glare of a silent Dario Cueto...

WWE NXT

-Commentators:  Rich Brennan, Byron Saxton, & Corey Graves.
-NXT Champion Kevin Owens kicked off the show...he said he was going to get rid of a problem(Alex Riley), but Sami Zayn intervened.  Owens had no problem with fighting Zayn...but General Manager S. William Regal came out to the ring instead.  Zayn made his entrance but Regal declared that it wouldn't turn into a free-for-all like the previous week.  Regal made the match for the next live special on May 20th...Owens balked at putting the belt on the line, but Zayn goaded him into accepting the match (a role-reversal from the setup for their previous bout).
-Earlier today:  Greg Hamilton encountered a heated discussion with Enzo Amore, Colin Cassady, & Carmella Van Damme.  The guys took their leave, leading to NXT Tag Team Champions Wesley Blake & Buddy Murphy trying to make a move.  Carmella told them that only she was allowed to insult her boys...then Alexa Bliss told her off and got slapped.
-Backstage:  Regal had Zayn sign the contract for the title match...Alex Riley stormed in and demanded another shot at Owens, but Regal said that he had run out of opportunities.  Zayn tried to interject himself into the discussion, but that got under Riley's skin and led to a match being set up between the two.
-Enzo Amore & "Big Cass" Colin Cassady(w/ Carmella Van Damme) d. NXT Tag Team Champions Wesley Blake & Buddy Murphy(non-title) when Enzo pinned Murphy after the Rocket Launcher (3:19).
-Backstage:  Becky Lynch said that winning the NXT Women's Title meant everything to her career.  She started training in her mid-teens, moved to Canada to train, wrestled in Japan...she didn't plan to be just another name in the women's division.
-Backstage:  Devin Taylor interviewed Bayley Rose about her upcoming match with Dana Brooke...but she was unfocused since she didn't have her T-shirt and hairbands.  After Bayley left, Emma Tayla passed through the interview area and wondered if Bayley would be needing the hairbands that she happened to be carrying...
-Dana Brooke d. Bayley Rose; Emma came out to Bayley's music in her shirt and hairband, mocking her usual entrance.  That distraction led to Dana winning with the Whiplash (4:16).
-Backstage:  Regal announced a triple threat match for the next NXT Title shot:  Hideo Itami vs. Finn Bálor vs. Tyler Breeze.
-Hideo Itami d. Adam Rose(w/ Rosebuds) with the flying boot (2:52).
-Backstage:  Bayley went looking for Emma...she promised that she would get her shirt and hairbands back.
-Becky Lynch d. Sarah (Crazy Mary) Dobson with an armbar submission (2:14).
-Backstage:  Rhyno responded to a Baron Corbin vignette from earlier in the show...he said Corbin had a lot to learn.
-Sami Zayn d. Alex Riley by DQ; NXT Champion Kevin Owens did commentary and left the table to attack Zayn for the finish (4:40).  Owens finished by taking out Riley with the apron powerbomb.
-Next week:  Itami vs. Breeze.

Comedy Part 563: It Was In The Cards

Location:  Crow's Nest (Wild Card Comedy)
Emcee:  Chris Cyr
After:  Nathan Orton
Before:  Jon Maddy

I didn't make the list at the Valley Park Funny Bone open-mic, so I went to the second stop on my itinerary...it was my first time at the Crow's Nest for Wild Card Comedy.  The gimmick of the show is that you can draw a "card" for some sort of challenge within your set.  I drew the cards for "Beat Fauxetry"(do a joke in beat-poetry style) and "New Release"(do a new joke).  My "beat-poetry" joke was actually another new joke that went over relatively well...it was hard to gauge the reactions since the bar was pretty loud at times.  All in all, I had a good time with the evening...tomorrow night, onward to "Ursa Miker" at The Great Grizzly Bear Pub and then Thursday Night Mic Night at Fitz's!

-King Of The Ring Tournament:  "The Man That Gravity Forgot" Adrian Neville d. Sheamus O'Shaunessy; Dolph Ziggler distracted Sheamus, allowing Neville to capitalize with an enzuigiri and the Red Arrow(corkscrew shooting star press) for the win (5:44).  Ziggler and Sheamus brawled after the match and referees had to separate them.
-King Of The Ring Tournament:  Wade "Bad News" Barrett d. "R-Truth" Ron Killings with the Bullhammer (4:38).
-R.I.P. Verne Gagne.

SICW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling show at the Community Center in East Carondelet, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

It was another standing-room-only turnout for SICW this past weekend...they'll need a bigger building at the rate they're going.  Thankfully no big adventure in my trip to the event...I was stopped by a train on the way home, but only for a minute or two.

Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus; your referees were Denny Thomas & Terry Riley.

Morgan sang the National Anthem for the third month in a row...fine job.

Promoter Herb Simmons unveiled the trophy to be awared to the winner of next month's Bruiser Brody Memorial Battle Royal...looks good.  He also ran down the list of special guests, including Stan Hansen, former WWF ring announcer Mike McGuirk, and Barbara Goodish(widow of the late Bruiser/King Kong Brody).

"Your Canadian Hero" Sean Vincent vs. "Dead Sexy" Daniel Gunner:  This was more of a technical match than I was expecting as Gunner focused on Vincent's arm and Vincent retaliated by working on the leg.  Vincent has been finishing with a modified figure-four called the "Mapleleaf Leglock" lately and he built up to that hold...he nearly beat Curtis Wylde with it at last week's Millstadt show but the time limit expired.  Vincent got the win with his new finishing hold in 7:03.

Big Jim Hoffarth & Paloma Starr vs. Ax Allwardt & Lucy Mendez:  Paloma Starr has been wrestling for five years and recently moved to the area from Texas.  They announced the ladies for the show but didn't announce a one-on-one match, so it turned out to be a mixed tag (similar to an LWA show where they booked MsChif and Daizee Haze and they did a mixed tag).  Hoffarth and Ax had a match at the previous show where Ax got disqualified for hitting Hoffarth with his chain, so they had some prior history.  It was basically a tease of the women battling and it erupted into a catfight that spilled out to the floor...resulting in a double DQ in 9:05.  These feuds...MUST CONTINUE~!

"The Man Of Tomorrow" Daniel Eads vs. "Volatile" Curtis Wylde(w/ Wyldefyre):  Interesting matchup here between two up-and-coming competitors...Wylde had the experience edge, plus the distraction factor of his valet at ringside.  Wylde isn't the most technically-refined grappler, but he's a great wrestling personality, if that makes sense.  This time around, the outside factor wasn't enough to turn the tide and Eads won with the Superman Punch in 8:20.

Drew interviewed Ron Powers in the ring...the subject was Ron's request to enter the Brody Battle Royal, but Drew courageously(?) pressed the issue of Red River Jack's identity.  Powers kept dodging the question until Travis Cook came out with Bull Bronson.  Director Of Affairs Cowboy Bob Orton granted Ron's request, prompting the entire Travis Cook Organization to attack...Ken Kasa & Chris Hargas jumped Orton while Bronson and Attila Khan attacked Powers.  Orton finally recovered enough to run off the rulebreakers with a chair, but the damage had been done as Bronson and Khan had delivered several big splashes.

Cue intermission~!  Had a decent dinner, so nothing to eat on this night.  Kept myself to one can of soda and a bottle of water.  #middleaged

A one-on-one match between Paloma Starr and Lucy Mendez was announced for the May show...woo.

"The Old School Warrior" Chaz Wesson & Keith Smith Jr. vs. "Ironman" Ken Kasa & "The Icon" Chris Hargas(w/ Travis Cook):  Chaz and Keith Jr. teamed with Keith Sr. at the GCW reunion show in December 2012, but last week's Millstadt show was the first time they had been in a two-on-two bout.  They defeated Ax Allwardt & Waco, but this was a different sort of challenge...Kasa and Hargas had teamed up in a past life(when Kasa was known as Ian Storm).  They could become a formidable tag team in the long run...guess we'll see.  The tag team experience fell in the favor of Travis Cook's duo; Kasa got the win over Keith Jr. with the John Wu Dropkick in 11:24 as Hargas kept Wesson from breaking up the fall.

"Dwarf Destroyer" Little Kato vs. "The Ladies' Man" Beautiful Bobby Dean:  MIDGET MADNESS~!  A lot of people came specifically for this bout and noticably left after it was over.  WHO SAYS SMALLER WRESTLERS DON'T DRAW?!?  Ahem.  They played it a bit more serious than their previous SICW meeting(about two years ago), though there were still comedy spots that drew the referee into the shenanigans.  Terry Riley certainly had a "tall order"...sorry, I'll show myself out.  Anywho, Dean was definitely the heel in this one...Kato won with a double karate thrust, evening the score from their previous encounter.  These two have been around a long time(dating back to WLW's days on PAX when I first saw them).

Red River Jack vs. Bull Bronson(w/ Travis Cook):  Big Daddy was notably absent for this month's SICW events.  It was hardly a technical exhibition, as you might expect...the two powerhouses traded bombs for most of the bout.  RRJ(and Ron Powers *cough*) seem to do as they please outside the ring as the masked man mercilessly beat down Bronson with a chair on the arena floor.  That led to Jack getting the  countout win in 7:27...perhaps the rookie referee Denny Thomas was a bit intimidated?  At any rate, Attila Khan(who didn't even have a match on the card) ran in for the post-match beatdown but Cowboy Bob made the save...

Intermission numero dos~!  That led into Brian Kelley presenting Daniel Eads with the Missouri Wrestling Revival Future Star award...he's definitely got the size and look, I'll be interested to see how his career progresses after only two years in the biz.  Cowboy Bob announced that Ricky Cruz(wrestling in Mexico for the weekend) would be teaming with old rival Ron Powers at the May show against Khan & Bronson...very interesting.

"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson vs. Flash Flanagan for the Classic Title:  After a few years of the SICW Championship featuring long reigns by its holders, the belt has become somewhat of a hot potato in the past twelve months.  Nagging injuries cut Heath Hatton's run a bit short, then Flash only held the belt for a few months before dropping it to Gary in February.  Flanagan had complained that Big Daddy's distraction had led to his downfall, so he got his contractually-obligated rematch here.  These two are as old-school as it gets and had a really solid main-event bout with no outside factors...at least not until the closing moments.  Gary accidentally knocked down the referee and Flanagan brought in his trademark kendo stick, but Jackson avoided the use of the weapon and got a hold of it himself.  As the ref struggled to regain his wits, Flanagan brought out a chain and KOed Gary with it for the shocking title win in 15:55!  Flash is now the only two-time SICW Classic Wrestling Champion and Gary's reign ended after two months in his third title defense.  My own personal conspiracy theory was that SICW wanted the belt on Gary when they were in attendance at the Cauliflower Alley Club reunion in Las Vegas...but the long game had Flanagan as champion, thus the double switch.  Just an Internet nitwit's speculation, mind you.

At any rate, that drew the month of April to a close with six shows in the books...but May will be even busier.  To wit:

-Saturday 5/2:  Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance in St. Louis, MO(Cinco De Mayo Festival/afternoon); Dynamo Pro Wrestling in Fenton, MO(evening)
-Tuesday 5/5:  Dynamo in St. Louis, MO(Off Broadway)
-Saturday 5/9:  Pro Wrestling Championship Series in Granite City, IL(new venue); Dynamo in Wood River, IL; MMWA in St. Louis, MO(South Broadway Athletic Club)
-Saturday 5/16:  SICW in East Carondelet, IL
-Sunday 5/24:  High Risk Wrestling in Cahokia, IL(new venue)
-Saturday 5/30:  World League Wrestling in Troy, MO
-Sunday 5/31:  Wrestling Invades America in Swansea, IL

If plans hold up, I'll be attending eight shows in the next month...I swear there should be support groups for this sort of thing...

Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

P.S. We are all marks.

Comedy Part 562: First Time At McKeane's

Location: McKeane's Pub
Emcee: Jon Maddy
After: Quentin Wilbert
Before: Stryker Spurlock

Wanted to get out to some different open-mics on my vacation week from work...unfortunately I didn't get to Heavy Anchor(looked like Danno's didn't have a show).  This was a newer open-mic show and had a few things going against it on this evening...the main bar patronage was a party group that wasn't paying attention to the comedy, plus we were competing with baseball AND WWE Raw on the TV screens.  (Myself and one other comic even joked that we were paying more attention to the wrestling.)  I plowed through my set without getting much of a reaction(to be fair, no one got much out of our alleged audience)...oh well, moving onward.

We had fun despite a minimal audience...no biggie, it can be fun to just tell jokes in front of people.  It can turn into a makeshift comedy workshop with people giving advice on each other's material...and we all have jokes that are works in progress.  I had a few new bits that I got out on the table, including one wrestling-related joke that I'd previously only told to friends who are wrestling fans.  Not quite sure how well it'd go over with your average casual audience, but I'll probably give it a shot at the next open-mic I attend.  I'm on vacation from work next week, so I'm hoping to get to a bunch of open-mic shows in that time...good times.

SLA Special Comment (Part 2)

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's St. Louis Anarchy show at the Knights Of Columbus Hall in Alton, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

This was an interesting show as very little was set up beforehand.  Davey Richards was scheduled to get a shot at the SLA Heavyweight Title, but he cancelled to work the EVOLVE show in Florida.  As a result, a multi-way match was scheduled with the winner to get a title shot later in the night.  A handful of matches were announced after Friday's show, but the main feature was the Tag Team Title tournament final.  Got to see former LWA manager Jewells; it was her first indie wrestling show in quite a while.

This time around, my trip to the show wasn't quite as adventurous...I made sure to use an ATM from my bank's branch so I wouldn't have to deal with the fee.  There was an overturned flatbed truck across the median as I got onto Highway 64, but thankfully I was taking the ramp onto 255 so I wasn't delayed for very long.

Your ring announcer was Mullet Guy; your referee(who had a really long night) was P.J. Drummond.

Jojo Bravo vs. "The Big Mustache On Campus" Mikey McFinnegan:  Both guys were looking to rebound from the previous night...Jojo came up a bit short against SLA Champion Gerald James while McFinnegan and Zakk Sawyers lost to A.C.H. and Davey Vega in the first round of the Tag Title Tournament.  This was essentially face-vs.-face and a good fast-paced opener...Jojo won with a jackknife cradle in 6:21.

Ricky Starks vs. Brandon Espinosa:  Espy was NOT liked by the fans after his actions toward Angelus Layne the previous night.  Interesting, Layne came out during the bout and seemed to be rooting for Espinosa...she said she "forgave" him for his previous actions, but her attempts at interfering in the match seemed to misfire more often than not.  Ultimately, her attempted blind trip caused her to hook Espinosa's leg by mistake...Starks got the win with Angel's Wings in 8:31.  A post-match argument ensued...Espy nearly repeated his actions from Friday but Layne blocked the punch, then unloaded on Espinosa with forearms until he retreated from the ring.  Looks like that honeymoon is over...but as long as she was in the ring, we might as well move on to her match...

Angelus Layne vs. "The Littlest Viking" Jake Parnell vs. "The Madman" Paco Gonzalez vs. Donovan Danhausen vs. Jordan Lacey(w/ Greg Jovi) vs. Alex Castle:  This would determine Gerald James' challenger for the SLA Title later in the night.  The face/heel balance was a bit off with four faces and two heels, but this style of match tends to be chaotic as a rule.  It was a good move to give an "underdog" a title shot on a night when the Tag Title tournament finals would be the main event...it reminded me a bit of Dynamo's gauntlet-style six-way dance from November.  Paco got the fall with a turnbuckle-walk DDT on Angelus in 10:51...interesting choice of contender.

Steve O. Reno vs. "The Millenial" Danny Adams:  Adams is doing really well for his short time in TEH BIZ(less than a year)...good for him.  Have only seen Reno a few times in recent months(he's from Texas); hope to see more of him in the future.  Adams won with a double-leg pin and feet on the ropes(FLAIR~!) in 8:02.

Zakk Sawyers vs. Trik Davis:  Given the youthful apperance of both participants, I wondered if this would be a winner-gets-his-driver's-license match.  *runs*  Anywho, they had a fun matchup with Trik as the heel for the weekend...things were starting to run together a bit in my head at this point(ugh).  Sawyers scored the slight upset with a brainbuster in 11:24.

A.C.H. vs. Louis Lyndon:  St. Louis Anarchy beat High Risk Wrestling to the punch by about a month on this one.  A.C.H. brought a basketball and hoop to the ring, then actually had fans "hold" Lyndon while he dunked the basketball onto his head...heh.  A fan returned the hoop to A.C.H. by placing it over his head...so would it be wrong to say that A.C.H. was "rimmed" in front of a bunch of people?  *ducks thrown objects*  We got a bit of "Stone Cold A.C.H." here as he went through the Steve Austin moveset, including the mudhole-stomping and Thesz Press.  This was a lot of fun and one of the longest matches of the weekend...A.C.H. hit the Stone Cold Stunner and followed up with the Hero's Grip v2.0(German suplex into an O'Connor Roll pinning combinatino) for the three-count in 19:05.

Intermission~!  Trying to mix up my beverage choices between soda and water...at the very least, root beer doesn't have caffeine.  Yes, I've reached THAT age.  :P

Davey Vega(w/ A.C.H.) vs. Jonathan Gresham:  The Cthulhu motif continued to get over for Gresham...he's really stood out in his recent appearances.  A.C.H. went to the backstage area at the start of the match, but he came back out to root for his tag team partner and roommate.  Vega was hobbled by a recent knee injury(it was heavily braced at both shows) and Gresham targeted the bad limb...A.C.H. actually directly interfered at least one, which was unusual.  They traded brainbusters in the finishing stretch(FIGHTING SPIRIT~!) until Vega finally got the win after a brainbuster onto the knee in 14:21...your opinion on this would probably depend on how you feel about the Japanese "jump up from big move" spots.

Mat Fitchett vs. Evan Gelistico:  Gelistico had spoken about his new "Cause" but didn't elaborate at the time...this was Fitchett's official return to the ring for SLA after revealing himself to be the man behind the Dangerous Deveroux mask.  I was banking on Fitchett being in the six-way match, but I'm guessing his title shot will happen at Circus Maximus.  Fitchett won a competitive match with a modified flying headscissors in 10:27.

"American Viking" Alexandre Rudolph vs. Joe Heiken:  Martial artist Heiken started by pulling his headband over his eyes as a makeshift blindfold...then blocking Rudolph's early strikes without the benefit of vision.  Neat.  The strategy only worked for so long, unfortunately...but it turned into a fun matchup with the contrast in styles.  Rudolph won with the Goozleplex(half-throttle/half-waistlock released German suplex) in 6:13.

Gerald James vs. "The Madman" Paco Gonzalez, Heavyweight Title Best-Of-Three-Falls Match:  These two had a fun match at Pro Wrestling Epic last month, so this promised to be another spirited affair.  Gerald didn't have Dorian Victor in his corner, so the fans chanted for Gary's Mom and Gary's Dad in the early going...he wasn't taking his challenger too seriously.  James won the first fall with a lariat(!) in 4:27...but Paco surprised him with an offensive flurry:  Turnbuckle-walk DDT, superkick, exploder suplex, and another superkick for an upset pinfall in 10:53!  Even if it wasn't for the title, it was a pretty big deal for Paco to score a fall on Gerald James in St. Louis Anarchy.  Gonzalez put up a heck of a fight, surviving not one but TWO of Gerald's Michinoku Drivers...but Gerald finally had enough and beat him down with a "ground-and-pound" attack(did I get that right, MMA people?) until the referee stopped the match in 13:57.  The champ retained once again...several of the fan favorites made their way to the ring to check on Paco after the bell and he was assisted to the backstage area.

The Hooligans(Devin & Mason Cutter) vs. Team BOSS("The Rebel" Jeremy Wyatt & Christian Rose)(w/ Greg Jovi), Tag Team Title Tournament Finals:  The Cutters defeated Brandon Espinosa & Angelus Layne and then The Viking War Party to reach the finals.  Team BOSS got past Ricky Starks & Steve O'Reno, followed by The Roommates to get to this point.  This one promised to be a classic battle and another good style contrast between the brawling Hooligans and more technical Wyatt & Rose.  Team BOSS had a strategy as Wyatt bashed Devin Cutter with a chair and rammed him into the wall, leading to the Vikings assisting him away from ringside.  That left Mason Cutter on his own for a large portion of the matchup, but he was able to withstand the assault.  Gerald James ran him from the front door to blindside Mason with his title belt, but Mason surprisingly kicked out of Wyatt's pin attempt!  (A fan nearly got his hands on Gerald as he ran back out the front door...eep.)

Devin finally made his way back to the ring to assist his brother, sparking the Hooligans' comeback...after a lot of close calls on both sides(including a wicked superkick/Lightning Spiral combo by Team Boss), Mason finally pinned Rose after the Hooligan Driver(wheelbarrow/second-rope flying DDT combo) in 24:08 and The Hooligans were the first St. Louis Anarchy Tag Team Champions!

The night wasn't quite over as a suit-clad Evan Gelistico made his way to the ring with a surprising cast of characters:  Danny Adams, "Risky Business" Everett Connors, and the returning Adam Raw!  They beat down the new champions in short order and fended off other wrestlers as well...Gelistico showed off a book labeled "THE RULES" and declared that The Cause would bring law and order to St. Louis Anarchy.  I guess they're an offshoot of "The Commission" from Metro Pro Wrestling...Anarchy has operated with relaxed rule enforcement for most of its existence so this will be an interesting development...

The next month or so will be busy around here...

SLA Special Comment (Part 1)

Now, as promised, a special comment about Friday's St. Louis Anarchy show at the Knights Of Columbus Hall in Alton, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

St. Louis Anarchy had been without Tag Team Titles since its days as the Lethal Wrestling Alliance, but the promotion finally crowned its first Tag Champs during this past weekend's double-shot.  The Hooligans(who were the final LWA titleholders) were the odds-on favorites to win the tournament, but there were quite a few duos who had the potential to be spoilers.  Dan Walsh & Jordan Lacey had been scheduled for the tourney, but Walsh is out of action with a concussion so that duo was replaced by Ricky Starks & Steve O. Reno.

I had planned to stop at a bank in Wood River to withdraw cash for my ticket, but that bank had closed down since my previous visit so I had to scramble for an ATM.  Stupid out-of-network fees.  *grumbles*  #thanksobama

SLA made the decision to delay the show since several fans were held up by an accident on Highway 270; the preshow match took place slightly after 7:00 and the main show began around 7:30.  Attendance was good, but it seemed to be a LITTLE bit down from Yuletide Terror.

Your ring announcer was Mullet Guy(I'll get his name one of these days); your referees were Richard White & P.J. Drummond.

"Risky Business" Everett Connors vs. Joe Heiken vs. J.J. Garrett vs. Jordan Lacey(w/ Greg Jovi):  Lacey was the lone heel in this matchup.  Heiken was a new face in SLA; he hails from Georgia and trains at the WWA4 school.  (I presume he traveled with Jonathan Gresham.)  We didn't really get to see his character until his singles match on the Saturday show...when more people are involved in a match, it's tougher to gauge what an individual can do.  Lacey won with an elevated DDT on Connors in 3:11.  (Yes, I personally timed the matches.  Shut up.)

The Roommates(A.C.H. & Davey Vega) vs. Roscoe Eat Lisa("The Big Mustache On Campus" Mikey McFinnegan & Zakk Sawyers) , Tag Team Title Tournament:  A.C.H. & Vega came out to the theme from "Friends"...bwahahaha.  A.C.H. and Vega have been both tag partners and opponents in the past few years, as well as real-life roommates(thus their team name).  No idea where McFinnegan and Sawyers' team name came from.  Fun matchup all around; Vega superkicked Sawyers into A.C.H.'s new version of the Hero's Grip(transitioning the German suplex into a modified O'Connor Roll) for the pinfall in 12:45.

The Viking War Party("American Viking" Alexandre Rudolph & "Littlest Viking" Jake Parnell) d. The Kentucky Buffet("The Money" Matt Cage & Alex Castle), Tag Team Title Tournament:  Continuing the trend of offbeat theme songs, Cage & Castle came out to "Fill Me Up Buttercup" with Cage singing along...outstanding.  The first two tag matches were essentially face-vs.-face so they didn't have as much heat as you'd think, but they were solid bouts.  This was the main question mark in my first-round predictions with the prior tag team experience of the Kentucky Buffet duo.  Cage & Castle hadn't teamed up in a little while as they had been pursuing separate interests...that lack of cohesion may have made the difference here.  A miscommunication led to Rudolph powerbombing Cage, then holding him upside-down for a middle-drop dropkick from Parnell.  Parnell pinned Cage in 9:17, sending the Vikings to the next round of the tournament...then Castle turned on Cage, viciously destroying his arm with a steel chair (explaining Cage's absence from the following night's show).

Ricky Starks & Steve O. Reno vs. Team BOSS("The Rebel" Jeremy Wyatt & Christian Rose)(w/ Greg Jovi), Tag Team Title Tournament:  Doing the math, the BOSS teams would have been pitted against each other if Walsh & Lacey had remained in contention...hmm.  Starks is the current ACW Heavyweight Champion but I didn't see if he had the belt with him...in fact, Reno is the current ACW U-30 Champion.  Wyatt & Rose were the main people to actively work heel...shockingly enough, their matches drew more heat as a result.  GASP!  Wyatt & Rose pulled off a nice powerbomb/neckbreaker combo on Reno, then Rose made him tap out to the No-Leaf Clover(Liontamer-style Boston crab) in 11:27.  Well done.

The Hooligans(Devin & Mason Cutter) vs. Brandon Espinosa & Angelus Layne, Tag Team Title Tournament:  Layne recently returned to action after a broken ankle.  I don't know if I'd call this face-vs.-face; Espinosa & Layne mostly played it straight(err...), but the Hooligans were the obvious crowd favorites.  Espy & Layne gave them a good fight, but miscommunication led to another team's downfall as Devin rolled up Espinosa in 6:35.  The couple attempted to make nice afterwards, but Espy rudely DECKED Angelus afterwards...ouch.

Louis Lyndon vs. Jonathan Gresham:  Gresham has really been getting into his new personae with the Cthulhu mask/jacket/tights...it definitely makes him stand out from the pack.  He got some "Octopus" and "Calamari" chants over the course of the weekend.  Saw Lyndon live for the first time at HRW a few weeks ago and he was impressive in his matchup with Blake Belakis...this bout was a lot of fun as well.  Lyndon definitely won over the fans in his SLA debut, getting "Please Come Back" chants afterwards.  They had a really fun match, one of my favorite bouts of the weekend; Gresham blinded Lyndon with green mist(octopus ink?) and obliterated him with suplexes, then repeatedly crushed his knee into the mat until he tapped out in 14:57.  That was a unique finish(in a good way).

Intermission~!  Shoutout to Brian Kelley & Dubray Tallman for letting me mooch off their pizza order.  It's turned into a running gag at the Alton venue for the fans to be distracted when the bartender brings in a pizza order for someone at the show...heh.

Donovan Danhausen vs. "The Millenial" Danny Adams:  Adams did a pretty good heel promo and issued an open challenge, something that rarely works out well for heels.  Danhausen was another debuting competitor on this weekend; he's from Michigan and trained at the House Of Truth wrestling school under Truth Martini and Jimmy Jacobs.  This was a good solid bout; Adams got the submission with a London Dungeon-style submission hold in 7:07.

"The Madman" Paco Gonzalez vs. Trik Davis:  Davis may look REALLY young(seriously, he looks like he needs someone to drive him to the shows), but he's been wrestling for quite some time; he was a big part of the heyday of IWA Mid-South.  I hadn't seen Trik too much before this, to be honest.  They had a good matchup and I wasn't sure who would come out on top; Trik won with a backpack Stunner(aka Ryback's Over-The-Shoulder Boulder Holder) in 11:06.

The Hooligans vs. The Viking War Party, Tag Team Title Tournament:  These teams are no strangers to each other as they're fought all over the national independent scene, including matches for Jersey All-Pro Wrestling with Necro Butcher as the Hooligans' tag partner.  Frank Wyatt(the third Viking) was in the house at the merchandise table.  This was as wild as you'd expect...unfortunately, no ghosts were sighted in this one.  Mason pinned Parnell after the Hooligan Driver(wheelbarrow/second-rope flying DDT combo) in 10:10 to send the Cutter brothers to the finals.

The Roommates vs. Team BOSS(w/ Greg Jovi), Tag Team Title Tournament:  Would we get a face/heel finale or would get a rematch from a previous SLA show with fan favorite duos squaring off?  This was one of my favorite matches of the night and could have legitimately gone either way...but Rose rolled up A.C.H. with a handful of tights in 14:00.  BOO~!  A.C.H. & Vega teased our third tag team falling-out of the night, but elected to Hug It Out(tm) instead.

Gerald James(w/ Dorian Victor) vs. Jojo Bravo, Heavyweight Title Best-Of-3-Falls Match:  With all due respect, calling it the "Heavyweight" Title doesn't really fit with the participants in this matchup.  These two had a really strong match at a Pro Wrestling Championship Series event with Jojo scoring the upset victory, but James has been a dominant champion over the course of his eighteen-month(!) reign in St. Louis Anarchy.  James went to a sixty-minute draw with Davey Vega in December and won his previous two title defenses(against Mat Fitchett and Angelus Layne) in two straight falls.

Bravo scored a flash pin with an O'Connor Roll in 5:00, marking the first time in nearly a year that Gerald had been pinned in SLA competition.  James evened the score with a blind flying Flatliner off the second rope in 13:12.  The referee was knocked down and Jojo hit an F-5, then locked Gerald in a camel clutch for a visual tapout that the official didn't see.  That brought out the members of BOSS to run interference, but The Hooligans made an appearance to even things up.  That cleared out everyone but Christian Rose and Dangerous Deveroux...Rose prepared to hit Jojo with a chair, but Deveroux suddenly took out Rose and unmasked to reveal Mat Fitchett!  I had heard rumors about Deveroux's true identity but had no confirmation until now...I suppose the full bodysuit would do a good job of covering up all of those tattoos.  Fitchett blitzed his old rival Gerald James with a flurry of offense before the referee revived, ending with a turnbuckle-walk DDT that gave Jojo a CLOSE near-fall.  Bravo delivered an Asai DDT and Samurai Driver(cross-legged Ki-Krusher...WA-SHING~!), but Gerald reversed the pin into a modified victory roll and held the tights for the cheap win in 19:00.  BOO~!

Of course, the weekend wasn't over...more on that next time.  Same Pat-Time, same Pat-Channel.

Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

P.S. We are all marks.

-Tag Team Title Tournament:  The Hooligans(Devin & Mason Cutter) d. Team BOSS("The Rebel" Jeremy Wyatt & Christian Rose)(w/ Greg Jovi) to become the first Tag Team Champions.  At one point, Wyatt bashed Devin with a chair and rammed him into the wall; that led to The Viking War Party(Rudolph & Parnell) helping Devin to the backstage area, leaving Mason on his own against both members of Team BOSS.  Mason toughed out a lot of abuse, including a belt shot from Gerald James behind the referee's back.  Devin finally returned to the match and evened things up...after a lot of close calls on each side, Mason pinned Rose after the wheelbarrow/second-rope DDT double-team finisher (24:08)!
-After the match, Evan Gelistico hit the ring in a suit accompanied by three other men in suits:  Danny Adams, "Risky Business" Everett Connors, and the returning Adam Raw!  They beat down the new Tag Champs and Evan Gelistico, brandishing a book labeled "THE RULES", declared that this was "The Cause" he was following...
