WWE NXT

-Commentators:  Rich Brennan, Byron Saxton, & Corey Graves.
-Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament Update:  Kyle Edwards reported that Jason Jordan & Chad Gable defeated The Hype Bros(Zack Ryder & Mojo Rawley) to advance to the semifinals when Gable pinned Ryder with the Grand Amplitude(Jordan belly-to-back throw into Gable bridging back suplex).  That confirms one semifinal:  Rhyno & Baron Corbin vs. Jordan & Gable.  On the other side of the bracket, Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder will face the winner of tonight's tournament bout...
-Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic:  NXT Champion Finn Bálor & Samoa Joe d. Enzo Amore & "Big Cass" Colin Cassady(w/ Carmella Van Damme); Joe hit Enzo with the muscle buster and Bálor got the pin after the Coup De Grace(top-rope double-stomp) (3:44 aired).
-Backstage:  Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano reflected on their early experiences in NXT...they're out of the tag tourney, but they've got singles matches tonight.  Gargano is facing Apollo Crews...Tyler Breeze decided that friends of Crews are enemies of his, so he's facing Ciampa.
-Asuka Urai:  Debuting soon.
-Apollo Crews d. Johnny Gargano with the gorilla press/standing moonsault combo (4:07).
-Backstage:  General Manager S. William Regal spoke with Emma Tayla & Dana Brooke in his office; they interrupted Asuka's inaugural appearance, so Dana will be facing her in her in-ring debut.  Regal showed Emma & Dana some footage of Asuka's match preparation(kicking a heavy bag) and they suddenly took the matter a bit more seriously.  Emma:  "Um...good luck with that..."
-Coming soon:  Nia Jax.
-Emma Tayla & Dana Brooke d. Peyton Royce & Billie Kay when Dana pinned Royce after the Whiplash (6:48).
-Backstage:  Devin Taylor interviewed Jason Jordan & Chad Gable about the Dusty Classic...they figure Rhyno & Corbin will spend more time fighting each other than them.  Dawson & Wilder interrupted, noting that they blew the eight-man tag in Brooklyn so they have an issue with them.
-Tyler Breeze d. Tommaso Ciampa with the Unprettier(!) (7:47).
-Backstage:  Rhyno & Corbin don't feel like anyone can stop them in the Dusty Classic...
-The show closed with a lengthy video package to hype the NXT Women's Title Ironwoman Match between Bayley Rose and "The Boss" Sasha Banks.
-Final lineup for Takeover: Respect:  Rhyno/Corbin vs. Jordan/Gable, Bálor/Joe vs. Dawson/Wilder, Dusty Classic finals, Crews vs. Breeze, Asuka vs. Dana, and Bayley vs. Sasha.

Comedy Part 604: 1/8

Location:  Westport Funny Bone
Feature:  Charlie Winfrey
Headliner:  Ryan Singer

So I didn't make the list at last night's open-mic.  No big deal, a ton of guys sign up.  I was promised that I would perform on next Tuesday's show...then I was contacted about hosting for the weekend.  Wow...I'd never even hosted an OPEN-MIC at the Funny Bone, let alone a weekend show.  I definitely appreciate the opportunity and a paid gig is always a nice perk.  I felt like I did well in my opening set, but the important part of the hosting role is getting the introductions and announcements right.  In that regard, I got everything right, so score in that regard.  Hopefully I can mix up my material a bit over the course of the next few nights...it'll be a grand total of eight shows: Tonight, tomorrow, two Friday, three Saturday(!), and Sunday.  Hope you can check out a show!

HRW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Sunday's High Risk Wrestling show at the Knights Of Columbus Hall in Cahokia, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.

I don't think it was announced to the live audience, but this was the end of HRW's stint in Cahokia. It sounds like they'll be moving their shows to western/central Missouri...state licensing may be a factor there, but hopefully they can build a better audience in a new location. HRW lowered their ticket price to $10 for this show after struggling to draw at previous events...it definitely produced a better turnout than usual, though it could have been even better.

A tournament was held to crown new Tag Team Champions; unfortunately, there has not yet been a linear title change in this promotion. A.C.H. was the first champion, vacated the title due to lack of defenses, then Blake Belakis won the vacant championship by beating Louis Lyndon. The Hooligans(Devin & Mason Cutter) were the first Tag Champs, vacated, reDRagon(Kyle O'Reilly) beat The Colony(Fire Ant & Silver Ant) for the vacant titles, then THEY vacated the titles.

Your ring announcer was Brian Thompson; your referees were Richard White, Nick Ridenour, & Jay King. Your unadvertised special guest was "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton.

Tag Team Title Tournament: Magic Inc.(Mike Outlaw & Justin D'Air)(w/ Magic Man) vs. A.J. Williams & LaMarcus Clinton: Dynamo vs. South Broadway! I was looking forward to this one and they had a really good opener. I don't think Williams and L.M.C. had teamed up before this, but Outlaw and D'Air have joined forces on several occasions. Wouldn't mind seeing these guys cross paths again in the near future, either in singles or tag matches. Magic Man stole L.M.C.'s wig(GASP~!), leaving our hairsprayed hero out of sorts. Williams got D'Air in an O'Connor Roll, but Outlaw broke it up with the Mafia Kick and D'Air got the pin on A.J. in 8:19. Woo.

Tag Team Title Tournament: The Riegel Twins(Logan & Sterling) vs. Adam Caster & Tony Kozina: Caster was subbing for "The Last Real Man" Silas Young whose absence was not explained; Young had been banned from ringside for the main event since he had interfered in Blake Belakis' previous title defenses. It was all I could do to not describe the team by saying "I shall call him...Mini-Me." (Sorry, Tony.) The Riegels were a late replacement for the team of Heath Hatton & "The Man Of Tomorrow" Daniel Eads; I was surprised Hatton & Eads were booked for HRW in the first place, given their connection to nearby Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in East Carondelet. (That was probably why they eventually cancelled, I would imagine.) The Riegels are from the Kansas City area; I had heard a few interesting things about their home promotion, but that's another story for another time. They are identical so I had to use the Bella Twin Method to keep them straight("Come on, Logan!"). Caster & Kozina were stiff enough that I identified Sterling by the red handprint on his back...ouch. The Riegels are pretty new but they showed potential here...it's just a matter of gaining experience and working with different people. Caster pinned I'm-pretty-sure-it-was-Sterling after his new fireman's-carry powerslam finisher in 8:18.

Tag Team Title Tournament: Team I.O.U.("The Down-South Dandy" Nick Iggy & "The Music City Mutt" Kerry Awful) vs. "The Blue-Eyed Devil" Tripp Cassidy & "Never Say Die" Josh Crane: Iggy & Awful were on a three-match winning streak heading into this show, so they had the momentum advantage out of the tournament field; they're an entertaining pair and I hope to see more of them in the near future. Cassidy & Crane have teamed up in the past but not in this area; they're two of the newer faces that I've seen through HRW. I appreciated seeing some different people at these shows; it's too bad they didn't draw well enough to remain in the greater St. Louis area. The more established team got the duke as a miscue between Cassidy & Crane led to their downfall; Awful pinned Cassidy in 7:18 after boosting Iggy into an advanced curbstomp.

John E. Rock vs. "The Fittest Wrestler On Earth" Mark Sterling: This was an open challenge by the debuting Sterling; he was scheduled to appear for HRW before this, but he sustained an injury at the previous night's Metro Pro event in Kansas City. I've seen Rock a few times, mostly in World League Wrestling; he brought a can of energy drink to the ring and was a bit too hyper for Sterling's liking. Sterling challenged Rock to a pushup contest, but it was a ploy to lure Rock into position for a cheapshot elbowdrop...which missed. Bwahahaha. They had a good solid match from there; Sterling blocked a sunset flip and held the ropes for the pin in 10:15(HEEL~!).

Intermission~! I indulged a bit with a slice of pizza as well as two root beers. The pizza had some garlic taste to it, which convinced me to throw a bit of garlic powder on the next frozen pizza I heated up at home. Results were mixed in that regard.

Monster Chaos vs. Karim Brigante(w/ Miss Monica Passeri): Hadn't seen Chaos before; I'd heard he was relatively new to The Biz. He's definitely a big boy, about a head taller than Brigante(who's a tall guy himself). I've become a quick fan of Brigante as he's looked impressive in his first few Midwest outings. Monica wrestled in Italy prior to moving to the U.S. with Karim, so hopefully we'll see her in the ring in the near future. It's a broken record on my part at this point, but it'd be nice to see more female competitors in this area. Brigante focused his attack on the leg to slow the big man down and keep him on the mat...Chaos made the powerhouse comeback but Karim kept taking out the leg. Chaos had to resort to a rollup out of nowhere to win in 9:05 and limped away from the ring area.

Tag Team Title Tournament Final: Team I.O.U.("The Down-South Dandy" Nick Iggy & "The Music City Mutt" Kerry Awful) vs. Magic Inc.(Mike Outlaw & Justin D'Air)(w/ Magic Man) vs. Adam Caster & Tony Kozina: The match had an interesting rule: The first pinfall/submission would win the match, but a team COULD be eliminated by disqualification if they broke up a pin more than once in the matchup.  Outlaw & D'Air were clear fan favorites with Caster/Kozina as clear rulebreakers with I.O.U. somewhere in the middle.  Given the rules, there were a lot of blind tags as you couldn't win the titles without being legal in the ring.  A couple of teams used up their saves, which added a bit to the drama.  Things broke down near the end and Outlaw and D'Air hit major dives to the floor...they were able to isolate Kozina long enough for D'Air to superkick Kozina into Outlaw's German suplex for the win and the belts in 11:07!  WOO~!

Gauntlet Match:  Heavyweight Champion Blake Edward Belakis started the match with red-tinged facial hair and red liquid splashed on his chest...that's what happens when you drink Kool-Aid too fast.  *runs*  Sugar Dunkerton and "Beer City Bruiser" Matt Winchester were both scheduled for the gauntlet but were M.I.A. for unknown reasons.  I'm not a big fan of stacking the deck against a heel, personally.

"The Midwest Jackass" Dale Patricks was Blake's first opposition and gave him a good fight, but fell to the palm strike in 5:16.  Next out was Jeremiah Plunkett, who I'd never seen before; he primarily wrestles in Tennessee and has held several regional championships in the National Wrestling Alliance.  Belakis pulled out the win with another palm strike in 9:30.  Next out was "The Yoga Monster" Mike Sydal...the New Midnight Express was NOT mentioned, even with Bobby Eaton in the house.  Belakis was starting to wear down and Sydal came close to scoring the win, but Blake rolled him up with a handful of tights(HEEL~!) in 14:28.  "Dirdey" Jake Dirden was a surprise entrant and someone Belakis knows very well from their battles in central Illinois.  Dirden dominated their exchange, but was disqualified in 19:32 for choking in the corner...D-OH!  Last out was "Diamond Cut" Ace Perry...he'd be the underdog under normal circumstances, but Belakis had taken a lot of abuse from multiple opponents.  Blake focused his attack on Ace's arm, but Ace made the comeback despite the damage...Perry got near-fall after near-fall with a lot of fans expecting a changing of the guard.  However, one more last-ditch palm strike allowed Belakis to hang onto his title by the skin of his teeth in a total of 26:08.  Whew!

HRW's run in the greater St. Louis area was a turbulent one for a variety of reasons:  Ticket prices, the Sunday afternoon scheduling, and running in the back yards of other area promoters.  All in all, I had a good time at their events(and got to do commentary for the first few) and wish promoter Frank Thurman the best of luck with his endeavors...

Plans for this coming weekend have changed for me...there are two good wrestling shows on Saturday night as Dynamo Pro Wrestling returns to the Stratford Inn in Fenton, MO and Pro Wrestling Championship Series has Stage Four of its second season at the Downtown Dugout in Granite City, IL.  I was having difficulty choosing between the two...can't go wrong either way, honestly.  However, I have a great opportunity ahead of me...I have my first hosting weekend at the Westport Funny Bone!  I am emceeing the shows from tonight through Sunday for headliner Ryan Singer...hope to see you there for one of those shows!

Local wrestling in October looks like this:

-Saturday 10/3:  Dynamo Pro Wrestling in Fenton, MO; Pro Wrestling Championship Series in Granite City, IL
-Saturday 10/10:  Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance in St. Louis, MO
-Sunday 10/11:  Outlaw Wrestling in Centralia, IL
-Saturday 10/17:  Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in East Carondelet, IL
-Saturday 10/24:  Dynamo Pro Wrestling in Granite City, IL

Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

WPW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's World Powerhouse Wrestling show at the American Legion in Kampsville, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

Truth be told, I initially balked at attending this show due to the driving distance.  However, Ben Simon's curiosity was piqued as he had never been to an MPW/FTW/WPW show, so we decided to carpool to the event.  Ben did the driving and he had GPS, so that was a plus.

Kampsville is a small town of about 350 people(going by the sign), so I imagine they don't get a lot of wrestling shows in their neck of the woods.  We nearly drove past the venue since all we had for an address was "2nd Street"; thankfully the sign outside the building had "WRESTLING" on it.  Yup, the marquee literally said "wrestling" on this night.

Your ring announcer was promoter Chuck Maddox; your referees were "The Whole Reffin' Show" and another guy whose name I didn't quite catch.

Chief Executive Officer Scotty Mac started the show...thankfully the opening promo wasn't overly long.  He had a ten-bell salute for Dusty Rhodes & Rowdy Roddy Piper(who had both passed away since the previous show).  He also acknowledged the "controversy" from the previous show; the referee had counted Uriah Eleazar down in his match with Curtis Payne when Uriah had seemingly gotten a shoulder up before the three-count.  Instead of giving him a rematch(which I thought had been teased at that Collinsville show in July), he was put into the Heavyweight Title match between champion Xavier Frost and challenger Scar to make it a triple threat.  That meant two members of The Legion would be in the main event against Frost...I see odds to be overcome.

"The Shooter" Curtis Payne vs. The Searcher for the U.S. Title:  The Legion had put Searcher out of action for a few months (explaning his absence from recent shows).  Searcher had been a rulebreaker before that(going by the WPW YouTube channel), but seemed to be a fan favorite on this night.  They went all mutual-respect-y in the early going, but then tempers flared and they took the fight to the floor.  The Legion(minus Scar) made its way out to ringside after a few minutes, but they just observed the battle as the two fought with chairs and a ladder.  They made their way back to the ring(with the referee allowing a lot of leeway with regards to countouts) and Payne went for a superplex, but Searcher took a bad fall off the turnbuckles to the floor.  He came up bloody as he had apparently hit his head on the landing...all I saw at first was blood on his arm.  Payne appeared to have the edge after a Buff Blockbuster, but Uriah Eleazar entered the ring to superkick The Shooter.  That ended the match in an indirect DQ win for Payne in 14:07(!)...Searcher didn't appearciate the interference(and the lost title opportunity) and dropped Uriah with a sitout powerbomb, encouraging the referee to make a three-count for some reason.  They had to take a quick break to clean up the blood on the mat and floor...

Dr. Wapo Choncho vs. Gideon Morbid:  Wapo came out in doctor's scrubs with a plastic toy doctor's bag.  This was Morbid's first match in several years; I saw him in attendance at the previous WPW show but didn't know if he would be getting back into the game.  Morbid took a quick cheapshot and went to the top rope with Wapo's doctor bag...but Wapo avoided the leap and Morbid hit his head on the plastic case on the landing.  Just like that, Morbid was down and out...Wapo attempted to administer C.P.R. and got a three-count completely by accident in 0:48.  WAPOWITZ WINS~!  Morbid decked the masked man after the bell...that was weird.

Sniper vs. Victor Cortez(w/ The Legion):  Scar was absent from the earlier Legion appearance, but he was at ringside for this matchup along with "The Butcher" Damian Blade, Uriah Eleazar, and Scarlet Wyld.  This was Sniper's first truly competitive matchup as he had previously only been in squashes with Wapo and Paradox.  He's still inexperienced, but he can only get better if he wrestles more back-and-forth matchups.  Of course, The Legion got involved on their new recruit's behalf...Cortez's suplex on Sniper looked a bit shaky, but then Sniper's a big dude.  Sniper set up for a chokeslam but Uriah broke it up with a superkick to cause the DQ in 6:10.  Cue Legion beatdown, capped off by a splash off the second rope by Scar.  Blade proclaimed that the heroes would all fall...

"The Real Deal" Alexander Steele & Knyght Fyre vs. "The Hitman" Jake Capone & Bronson(w/ Juggernaut Jones) for the Tag Team Titles:  Steele & Knyght won the titles from Ivan Strokgenovf and Victor Cortez at the previous show thanks to Cortez & Scarlet Wyld turning on Ivan to join The Legion.  Capone and Jones won a tag match at that show, but this match had Capone and Bronson teamed up with Jones in the corner.  Would like to know a bit more about Bronson; he's shown some good athleticism in the few times that I've seen him.  There was one gaffe where Jones pulled on the leg of a guy making a pin attempt...but it was one of his own guys.  Whoops.  The match was pretty decent but seemed to run out of steam toward the end; maybe it could have gotten the point across with less time.  The makeshift challenging team fell apart at the end as the two got into a shoving match...that led to Knyght pinning Bronson after a pretty cool Skyhigh/Zigzag combo in 14:33.

Intermission~!  Refreshment count:  Two root beers.  Ben indulged a bit more, including some chocolate-covered potato chips...interesting combo.  During the break, Uriah talked Jason Halbert of the Hour Bomb podcast into entering the ring for a handshake...then decked him and put the boots to him before order was restored.  Hate when that happens.

Ivan Strokgenovf vs. "The Chosen One" Gauge Evans(w/ The Chipster):  Chipster proclaimed Evans to have been "trained by Ric Flair & Harley Race"...I can only assume that he attended the World League Wrestling training camp last month.  Ben was a bit worried when Ivan took a DDT from Evans, but thankfully no Darren Drozdov tribute ensued.  Uriah/Cortez/Scarlet came out to ringside...seriously, this was getting to New World Order territory with the constant presence on the show.  Uriah distracted the ref while Cortez took out his former tag team partner with his own kendo stick; that allowed Evans to capitalize with a frog splash for the win in 9:57.  Cortez invited Evans to join The Legion...Evans walked away from the offer and Cortez told him that he would regret his decision.

Christian Haze vs. "The Butcher" Damien Blade(w/ The Legion):  Hadn't seen Haze in quite a while; it looks like he's slimmed down in the past few years.  Cortez got in a cheapshot with Blade's Grandmasters' Rumble briefcase and Blade targeted the arm.  At one point, the match spilled to the floor and Blade jokingly(?) confronted me, asking me if this was my "match of the week"...I think he mistook me for someone else in that regard.  (Was it Crimefighter who used to do that?)  At any rate, Haze rallied but had trouble delivering power moves with the bad arm(PSYCHOLOGY~!).  Christian went aerial with a cross-bodyblock off the top rope, but the ref's attention was elsewhere thanks to the 82nd Airborne at ringside; Cortez whacked Haze with the briefcase once again and Blade got the cheap win in 18:26(!).

Xavier Frost vs. Scar vs. Uriah Eleazar(w/ Victor Cortez & Scarlet Wyld) for the Heavyweight Title:  Scar came out alone but the rest of the Legions(sans Blade) entered with Uriah; it was implied that Scar was supposed to help Uriah get the win as it was essentially a two-on-one situation.  As I was talking to Ben, I referred to Uriah as looking like "emo Gary Jay", if that makes sense.  As one would expect in this situation, the Legion duo worked together to beat down Frost, but tension surfaced over who would get the pin for the win and the championship.  They got back on the same page, but Uriah threw one superkick too many and accidentally took out his stablemate.  Frost took advantage with the KICK WHAM STONE COLD STUNNER on Uriah for the win in 9:17 to retain his title...but his night wasn't quite over.

Cue Blade's music...he was cashing in his briefcase contract.  Payne, Searcher, and Haze entered the scene to brawl with the rest of The Legion, leaving it as a one-on-one matchup...

Xavier Frost vs. "The Butcher" Damian Blade for the Heavyweight Title:  Frost had just been through a tough title defense...Blade had his own match right before the main event, but he had some time to rest.  Frost was able to take Blade down almost immediately into a Koji Clutch, but Blade punched the referee as he tried to escape the hold.  Scotty Mac called down a second referee, but one official counted Frost's shoulders down on the mat as the other ref called for the bell due to Blade's verbal submission in 1:19.  We had a double-fall draw...would the champion retain?  Would the title be held up?  Put on the spot to make a decision, Scotty Mac declared that Frost and Blade were "co-champions"...weird, but okay.  It's not unprecedented in wrestling as Chris Jericho and Chyna once did that with the WWF Intercontinental Title.  Of course, there's only one title belt so Frost got to take it home...he called for the sound guy to play some music to wrap up the show, even noting that I wanted some music.  Well, yeah, music is good.

Anywho, WPW has two shows lined up for November:  Friday the 6th in Jerseyville and Saturday the 28th in Collinsville.  More on that as it develops and more on the weekend in the next commentary.  Same Pat-Time, Same Pat-Channel...

Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

Anarchy Wrestling TV #503

-Commentators:  Brett Wolverton & John "The Body" Johnson.
-Stephen Platinum enlightened us...he's wasted far too much time on Anarchy Wrestling and doesn't plan to be in the building for Hostile Environment.  He already took his pound of flesh, so why should he put himself in harm's way and give Anarchy the satisfaction of a CHANCE at redemption?  He claimed that Platinum Championship Wrestling was the true number-one promotion in Georgia and he had nothing left to prove to Anarchy.
-Jacob Ashworth & "The Violence Artist" Trever Aeon d. T.V. Champion "The Encore" Kevin Blue & Young Lions' Champion Jeremy Foster when Aeon rolled up Blue (7:19 aired).  Since Aeon scored the pin, he got to decide which title would be on the line in the four-corner match at Hostile Environment...he wanted to regain his Young Lions' Title, but wanted all the glory and decided that BOTH belts would be at stake.
-Heavyweight Champion Jagged Edge enlightened us, introducing PCW's team for the main event.  He also announced that his title defense against "Wild" Billy Buck at Hostile Environment would be a bullrope match.
-War Games Advantage Match:  "The Modern Classic" B.J. Hancock & Lars Manderson(w/ Heavyweight Champion Jagged Edge) d. "Hit For Hire" Bobby Moore & "The Lethal Dose" Stryknyn when Jagged hit Stryknyn with his bullrope's cowbell behind the referee's back and Hancock got the pin after the piledriver (9:52 aired).  "Wild" Billy Buck hit the ring along with Jerry Palmer to run off the PCW contingent afterwards.
-Buck officially accepted Jagged's bullrope match challenge for Hostile Environment, then Jerry Palmer spoke his mind...he said the proverbial keys to the kingdom were on the line at War Games.  If Team PCW won, Stephen Platinum would get control of the company as he had always wanted.  That team was established as Hancock, Manderson, The Big F'n Deal("Wrestling's Most Dangerous Weapon" Geter & Brian Blaze), & Washington Bullet Jon Williams.  As for Team Anarchy, it would be Moore, Stryknyn, Shadow Jackson, and Logan Creede.  "The Priest Of Punishment" Mikael Judas is already booked for his Ironman Challenge defense against "The Technician" Todd Sexton, but Palmer got his word that he would be the fifth man at War Games as well.  On top of that, if Team Anarchy won, Jeff G. Bailey would get Stephen Platinum in the cage!
-Agent/Attorney Jeff G. Bailey offered his rebuttal to Platinum.  What does he have to gain...other than ownership of the promotion that he had always coveted?  Once he gets him in the cage, he'll teach him a lesson in violence...he's just flesh and blood and Bailey vowed to "butcher the former and spill the latter."  If Miss Rachael dares to stick her nose into things, she'll get more of the same...

Heath went for the hold again but Flash kicked him off into the referee...Hatton took Flanagan down into the Crippler Crossface and Flash tapped out, but the ref was still down. Flash got his kendo stick and beat down Hatton with it, causing Big Daddy(who had been scouting the match) to call Ron Powers to the ring as a countermeasure. Powers dropped Flanagan with an RKO and put Hatton on top...the referee recovered and started the pin count, but saw Powers and the kendo stick in the ring and disqualified Heath. Hatton was angry with Powers for costing him the match, insisting that he had it won on his own...Heath left the ring as Flanagan and Powers confronted each other, but Flash retreated with his championship.
-Drew interviewed Classic Champion Flash Flanagan about his next title defense against Ron Powers.
-"The Icon" Chris Hargas(w/ Brandon Espinosa) d. Karim Brigante when Espinosa's distraction led to Hargas hitting the F-5 for the win.

-"The Real Deal" Alexander Steele & Knyght Fyre d. "The Hitman" Jake Capone & Bronson(w/ Juggernaut Jones) to retain the Tag Team Titles; dissension on the challengers' side led to Knyght pinning Bronson after a Skyhigh/Zigzag combo (14:33).

Scotty Mac had to make a decision and declared Frost and Blade to be "co-champions".  Uriah took another cheapshot at the Hour Bomb host on the way out and Scotty Mac blew his top, threatening Uriah with a heavy fine.

The audience was smaller but they seemed to have a good time at the show...yay.  I went up first and brought my notebook on stage to try out some newer material; I finally related a rough draft of my "don't piss in my city again" story and it definitely has potential.  I have a few tags for the bit that I didn't use, but it's officially become a work in progress and I hope to give it a few more run-throughs in the upcoming weeks.  It's all a work in progress, of course...stay tuned to social media for the time and place of my next performance!

After:  Josh Arnold
Before:  Remy Jones

I feel like I've had a pretty good run of solid performances lately...I did my best to mix things up on this night by using different material.  Hopefully I'm making a good impression on the right people...the fact that I've been making the list on a regular basis at Westport is a positive sign.  I've got a few new bits in mind that I need to write out and hopefully I can try those out on stage in the near future.  Next up for me:  Open-mic night at Hey Guys Comedy...WOO~!

WIA Special Comment

EDIT 9/23: Forgot a match...whoops.

Now, as promised, a special comment about Sunday's Wrestling Invades America show at the Improvement Hall in Swansea, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.

This was originally scheduled to take place at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, but the plans fell through and they moved the event to the Swansea venue. The show had the unfortunate stumbling block of running at the same time as WWE's Night Of Champions pay-per-view, on top of everything else. As such, the turnout was a bit lower than the previous Swansea event, though the fans were enthusiastic for most of the event.

WIA has been a bit polarizing in these circles with previous events getting less-than-stellar reviews. I feel like the in-ring quality has improved, though the storylines can be overly complex at times. (I freely admit that I'm unfamiliar with the early days of this promotion; I didn't attend one of their shows until last December.) I'm sure there's a balance between too many storylines and not enough storylines...angles are a tough thing to do on the independent scene when fans aren't privy to everything that happens.

Your ring announcer was Jeff Callahan; Jason Pemberton was the only one of the three referees that I recognized. (EDIT 9/23: One of the other refs was Chris Collins.)

Jeff started the show with a ten-bell for his father(and the grandfather of his son Donald, aka Robert Dorsey).

Nicholas Newman, previously the sidekick of General Manager (Trystan) Brady Shadeux, came out to voice his desire to become a wrestler himself. He seemed to be acting like a face, especially when Brandon Espinosa(established heel) came out and insulted him. Espy punctuated his statements with a microphone cheapshot, then locked on the cross-armbreaker until Kevin Lee Davidson(his scheduled opponent) ran him off. Shadeux made his entrance, seemingly paying little attention to Newman, and announced that Heavyweight Champion Jonathan Napier had suffered a concussion the night before. Thus, the scheduled Full Metal Mayhem match between Napier and Gavin Alexander was off and the K.L.D. vs. Espy match would crown an "interim champion".

Just as myself and Ben Simon were wondering what Alexander thought about being shut out of the title picture, Gavin made his entrance and he was SERIOUSLY ticked off. At some point in the past, Napier betrayed Alexander to join The Empire and Gavin was seriously wanting some payback(with the championship being a nice perk in the deal). He cornered Shadeux with a bunch of barbecue skewers in hand and threatened to get all stabby if he didn't get some compensation...he wanted to beat up The Empire and didn't care how many of them he had to face. This led to a handicap match being set up for later in the event.

Davey Richards vs. Tony Kozina: This was an interesting match for this particular show...it helped that both live in the St. Louis area. It seems like Davey's been doing more independent dates recently. Kozina's had bad luck with entrance music lately as he got some kind of hip-hop tune and griped about it all the way to the ring. Kozina was in klutzy mode as he stumbled around a bit in the early going, including a full-fledged trip when Davey did a duck-under as he was running the ropes. Kozina got the microphone and tearfully proclaimed that he just didn't have it any more and was going to retire...he called the locker room out to ringside as he spoke to his protege Richards. Davey said that he respected Kozina's decision and maybe it was time for him to hit the old dusty trail...they embraced as the fans applauded...then Kozina mulekicked Davey in the groin as the referee wasn't paying attention. Bwahahaha.

Kozina ranted at Davey that he made a fool of him on pay-per-view(TNA's recent Gut Check show), then went to the top rope to finish him off...only to slip on the turnbuckle and crotch himself. D-OH! Things settled down into a more standard matchup, though they had several comedy spots that included Kozina's tights being pulled down. Kozina took control and delivered an airplane spin...but he got dizzier than Davey and fell over Davey as he was down on all fours. Davey dazedly rolled backwards onto Kozina and got the pin by sheer accident in 15:25. Definitely a different sort of match than you'd expect, similar to the match they had at High Risk Wrestling earlier this year...but it was fun to watch, Maggle.

Billy McNeil vs. Leone Mephisto: This rivalry extends back to the days of Independent Hardcore Wrestling when McNeil won the title and Mephisto turned on him. Mephisto loudly proclaimed his hatred for old people, particularly the vocal ones in the front row...this led to a spot where Billy held Mephisto for an elderly woman to slap. Whatever you think about him as a person, he's a solid heel character. I'm the type that's okay with some political incorrectness in wrestling if it's a heel doing it, thus emphasizing that it's wrong to say/do those things. Screw SHADEZ OF GREY; most fans want to see good guys beat up bad guys. Billy's been one of my favorites for a long time and it's always cool to see him in the ring; these two worked well together. Mephisto blocked a re-entry sunset flip and held the ropes for the cheap pin in 11:42(HEEL~!).

After the match, Mephisto antagonized the older ringside fans, then turned his attention to Tyler Copeland...he said the Pro Wrestling Epic Heavyweight Title was his for the taking and Copeland should just step aside. Copeland got some fan support for being in opposition for Mephisto, but he quickly dismissed the fans by saying that he didn't care much for them either. Long story short, Copeland wasn't walking away from his title shot...so Mephisto promised to keep a very close eye on the championship match later in the show. They got all "inside baseball" for a bit, talking about the relationship between PWE and WIA and how Mephisto "saw potential" in Copeland when everyone else was writing him off, then Mephisto took credit for WIA's improvement in the past year.

Barackus & Jayson Virtue vs. LaMarcus Clinton & Chase King vs. Chase Daniels & Flaming Freddie Fury vs. Taylor Champion & Jason Allen(w/ Trystan Brady Shadeux), four-way dance for the Tag Team Titles: WIA had announced a gauntlet match to crown its first Tag Champs, but changed it to this format instead. Daniels & Fury's pre-match theatrics lasted longer than their actual participation in the match; Jason Allen quickly pinned Daniels after his version of Stardust's Dark Matter move(sort of a reverse STO) in 0:26. Champion & Allen were the lone heel duo(representing The Empire) and I had them pegged as my favorites to win, but things went awry and Chase King pinned Allen after a side backbreaker by L.M.C./running elbowdrop by King combo in 4:31. Champion was not happy with his partner's incompetence and literally carried him away from ringside. That left us with the two face teams, though Barackus and Virtue seemed to be slightly more fan favorite-ish as L.M.C. & King isolated Virtue for a while. Barackus got a hot tag and cleaned house, but made the mistake of tagging Virtue back into the match for the finish. L.M.C. and King were able to get Barackus out of play long enough to cut off Virtue on the turnbuckles, then deliver a powerbomb/top-rope clothesline combo. That was enough for King to pin Virtue in 9:18 and we had newwwww Tag Team Champions! The former MMWA Tag Champs have gold once again...and the members of the final two duos all shook hands afterwards.

Paco Gonzalez vs. Adam Caster: This was originally scheduled to be Paco vs. Austin Blackburn but it was changed a few days before the show. It looked like a one-sided affair with the former Adam Raw having the edge in size and strength as well as experience. I'm REALLY glad Paco didn't wear his Cubs attire or the fans might not have been so supportive. These guys had a solid competitive matchup with quite a few near-falls for Paco...but Raw got in a mule kick while hanging onto the referee to stop Paco's momentum(HEEL~!). Raw finished with a fireman's-carry powerslam in 9:05...but Paco didn't take the tainted loss lightly and confronted Caster, dropping him with a post-match superkick.

Intermission~! Stuck to root beer(Fitz's~!) on this night and had two bottles of soda. Gary Jackson bought me another root beer later in the night...oh, forgot to mention that Gary Jackson was in the house to watch the show. #namedropper

Darkside vs. "The Enforcer" Jimmy D vs. Clownman Jacko for the Interstate Title: The feud was Darkside-Jimmy D; not sure why Jacko was added. Darkside had fallen out of favor with The Empire and Jacko(in his more psychotic heel character) is a new addition to that stable. About halfway through the match, Jimmy D took down Darkside with a single-arm DDT and he was assisted to the backstage area, announced as "eliminated" around the 5:50 mark. Since it was a triple threat match, it didn't really matter too much since a pinfall/submission on anyone would win the match and the belt. Oddly, I saw this particular pairing at PWE about a month ago with the face/heel roles reversed. D and Jacko don't seem to click that well in the ring for whatever reason; not sure why. Jacko hit the Big Top Drop(second-rope senton bomb) but D got a foot on the bottom rope; Jacko went for the move again and this time D rolled out of the way. Jimmy D rallied with a spear, then followed up with a wind-up elbowdrop(nod to Gary Jackson?) for the pin and the title in 11:10.

FIRE THE OVERBOOKING TORPEDOES~! Symon Phoenix(who was screwed out of the Interstate Title by Darkside earlier this year) dragged the already-injured Darkside out from the backstage area and beat him down...he was followed by the other members of The Empire, including Jacko and the returning Landlord(accompanied by Krista, who was dressed as a secretary and handing out "eviction notices"). Somewhere in the middle of it all, Big Jim Hoffarth(who was in the audience the whole time) attacked Jimmy D and they brawled to the backstage area. The Empire beatdown continued for a LONG time and Darkside was handcuffed to the bottom rope for a good portion of it. Landlord enlightened us, then capped off the assault with a Rock Bottom on Darkside. Guess that's a face turn?

Brandon Aarons vs. "Infamous" Tyler Copeland for the PWE Heavyweight Title: Copeland defeated L.M.C. at the most recent PWE show to become the top contender. These guys worked pretty well together and I could see this becoming an extended feud(probably turning into a three-way issue with Mephisto included). Copeland has a case for a rematch since he seemingly had the match won with a TKO, but the referee had been knocked down and there was no one to count the pinfall. Aarons came back with a superkick for his own visual fall, but the ref was still down and Copeland BELTed him. The official recovered to count one...two...NO. Copeland hooked his Last Chancery finisher in the middle of the ring and things looked bad for Aarons, but he just barely reached the ropes to escape. I was wondering if Mephisto would interfere, but Aarons hit the Go 2 Sleep out of nowhere and then followed up with the close-range superkick...that sealed the deal in 8:21 of a really good matchup. Once the match was over, Mephisto hit the ring to attack Aarons...but the members of the guest band Hallow Point hit the ring to run off Mephisto and Copeland. Guess they're big fans of Aarons...heh.

Gavin Alexander vs. Taylor Champion, Clownman Jacko, Symon Phoenix, & Jason Allen(w/ Trystan Brady Shadeux, The Landlord, & Krista): Alexander benefitted from the fact that all but new Empire member Phoenix had already competed on the show. On top of that, The Empire foursome had to tag in and out, forcing them into black-ninja mode. ("How did we all agree we should attack the guy?" "All together..." "And how did we attack?" "One at a time.. ") On top of that, the tension in The Empire finally reached a boiling point as Champion started fighting with Allen, leaving The Empire with only two active participants in the match. As a result, Gavin was able to get the win after a huge lariat on Phoenix in 8:58. Gavin made peace with both Robert Dorsey and Taylor Champion after the match, then gave Jason Allen a swinging uranagi for the hell of it...he's not done with The Empire and will be targeting Tyler Copeland as well as Jonathan Napier. Hopefully this means Champion will get some time to shine...I've been a fan of him from what little I've seen, but he seems to be in the background for the most part.

Kevin Lee Davidson(w/ Nicholas Newman) vs. Brandon Espinosa for the "interim championship": There was no belt for the interim title, but then the championship situation came up at the last minute. It sounds like the interim champion will be recognized as the titleholder until Napier is cleared to return, then Napier will face the interim titleholder to determine the undisputed champion. I joked with Gary that he could do some scouting on both guys in this main event(he's feuding with Espinosa in SICW and is the top contender to K.L.D.'s Heavyweight Title in the MMWA).K .L.D. had his regular wrestling gear at this show as opposed to his bodyguard attire from the MMWA.These guys had crossed paths before, but this was their first one-on-one encounter in the immediate St. Louis area(they were in a triple threat match at the previous WIA show with Da'Marius Jones). Davidson dominated with his size and strength advantage, but Espinosa had the experience edge and targeted the arm after using the ringpost to his advantage. I was wondering if the suddenly-face Newman would double-cross K.L.D., but it didn't happen on this night. In fact, Newman played a vital role in the finish: The referee was knocked down when Espy pulled the ref in the way of a Davidson avalanche, so Espinosa brought in a chair and whacked K.L.D. with it a time or three. Espinosa covered as the referee recovered to count three in 13:48...but Newman video-recorded the chair attack on his smartphone and showed the official what happened. (That's ONE way to do instant replay...) As a result, the ref restarted the bout...and Espy ran right into K.L.D.'s spinebuster for the win in twelve seconds (14:00 total match time)! We have a newwwww WIA (Interim) Heavyweight Champion!

Whew...that was a busy weekend. Next weekend won't be nearly as crowded...World Powerhouse Wrestling is in Kampsville, IL on Saturday and I'm still deciding whether to make that trip. (I think Ben Simon wanted to carpool...) Next Sunday is High Risk Wrestling in Cahokia.

October looks like this:

-Saturday 10/3: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in Fenton, MO; Pro Wrestling Championship Series in Granite City, IL
-Saturday 10/10: WWE in St. Louis, MO; Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance in St. Louis, MO
-Sunday 10/11: Outlaw Wrestling in Centralia, IL
-Saturday 10/17: Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in East Carondelet, IL
-Saturday 10/24: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in Glen Carbon, IL

I won't be able to attend the Dynamo show in Glen Carbon...that's because my esteemed colleague Michael Langan has decreed that I need a vacation of sorts. To that end, we're going on a four-stop CHIKARA road trip: Thursday 10/22 in Minneapolis, MN, Friday 10/23 in Chicago, IL, Saturday 10/24 in Jeffersonville, IN, and Sunday 10/25 in Columbus, OH. More on this as it develops.

Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

SICW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling show at the Community Center in East Carondelet, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

It looks like my stint as a commentator for Wrestling Explosion has come to an end.  Promoter Herb Simmons wants to personally push the upcoming fall events, so he has returned to the mic alongside Drew Abbenhaus.  It was fun while it lasted and hopefully I'll be able to call more of the local wrestling action in some capacity.

Turnout seemed a bit lighter than normal but was still decent...there was a baseball game at GCS Stadium that night, though I don't think that was a HUGE factor.  I left earlier than usual, which was fortunate since I was stopped by a train for a few minutes.

They didn't have any music for the night...had never been to an "a cappella" wrestling show before.  The show started with the National Anthem, sung by local young lady Morgan...nice job, as usual.  The roster came out to ringside and promoter Herb Simmons introduced someone who hadn't been to the building in almost a year:  Larry Matysik!  That got a great crowd reaction...sadly, I couldn't see him over the rest of the audience as everyone was standing.  Wish I could have talked to him before he left for the night, but he said a few words to the fans in attendance...very cool that he's feeling well enough to stop by the show.

Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus and your referees were Terry Riley & Denny Thomas.  Both officials got "New Ref" catcalls during the night...geez, those fans don't know WHAT they want...  (Presumably they wanted Jay King...give the man a break, he's very busy with the refereeing, veterinary duties, ninjitsu, AND Von Erich impersonation gigs...)

Keith Smith Jr. & The Math Magician vs. Waco & "Dead Sexy" Daniel Gunner:  The Math Magician made his SICW debut at the August show in a loss to The Iceman...last month was an anomaly for me as I hadn't missed an East Carondelet show in almost two years.  Gunner had been a fan favorite in recent months and the makeshift duo with Waco didn't seem to function well as a unit.  The masked man took the lion's share of abuse for his side, but Keith Jr. cleaned house after the hot tag.  A miscommunication on the opposite side led to Keith attempting a sunset flip or rollup on Waco, but Waco fell into the ropes.  Smith rebounded with IT'S THE BIG FOOT and pinned Waco in 9:08...all righty then.  The Waco/Gunner tandem left separately...

Karim Brigante vs. "The Icon" Chris Hargas(w/ Brandon Espinosa):  Travis Cook was conspicuous by his absence on this evening...a few fans chanted "We Want Travis" at times.  I wondered about those particular gentlemen...and I was uneasy enough with the presence of a youngster in a Pentagon Jr. mask.  (Sure, let your kid idolize the guy who sets people on fire...just because I'm a bit weird in the head doesn't mean you should let your kids be influenced by those kind of characters.  I AM NOT A ROLE MODEL, or something.)  Ben Simon noted that our mutual first impression of Brigante was a match with "Skinny Timmy"...yup.  I thought this match was REALLY good and they worked well together...this was a rare case where Hargas was at a slight size disadvantage.  Espy stuck his nose into the proceedings a few times, as you might expect...Brigante got a good rally going, but the distraction proved costly.  Karim knocked Espinosa off the ring apron, but Hargas was able to recover and deliver the F-5 to win in 5:28.  Nice outing for Brigante; I'll be watching his career with great interest.

"The Modern-Day Moolah" Malia Hosaka vs. "The Queen Of Chaos" Lucy Mendez:  Hosaka had been at a few previous SICW shows, but this was her first Midwest match in a long time; she was in the rare position of being the fan favorite against established heel Lucy.  For those like myself who first saw Hosaka in WCW in the late-'90s, it was a revelation to discover that she made her pro debut in *1987*!  She competed in WCW's short-lived women's division during the Monday Night Wars before the New World Order overtook everything else...she also made a handful of appearances on WWF TV but never became a regular character on their show.  She held the World League Wrestling Women's Title and was also one-half of the SHINE Tag Team Champions with Brandi Wine.

They took some time to build up the match, something which made more sense in retrospect.  The fans were slowly drawn into the bout as Malia was essentially an unknown to casual observers, but she made a good impression by the end of the bout(I heard a few "Moolah" chants).  Lucy focused her attack on the arm and Malia favored the injured limb for the rest of the contest...YAY SELLING~!  They went for a lot of pinning combinations as the time ticked down...working toward a time limit is a lost art in wrestling nowadays as very few promotions still make use of the clock.  In the end, they went to a 15:00 time-limit draw(!)...fans wanted five more minutes but Lucy declined.  Hopefully we'll get round two in the near future...YAY WRESTLING~!

Cue intermission~!  Concession count was two sodas(Orange Crush and Pepsi) and a Hershey bar with almonds.  Patience is a virtue at some independent shows as they'll occasionally mark down the food/drink prices near the end of the show...word to the wise.

Ron Powers vs. Ax (Allwardt) & (Bubba) Troll:  Powers steamrolled Waco at the August show and got an impromptu title shot at Flash Flanagan; that ended in a non-finish due to outside interference.  Ax and Troll tried to use the numbers game to their advantage, but another makeshift team had communication problems on this night.  Troll accidentally avalanched Ax in the corner and Powers rolled up Troll for a quick pin in 2:30...for an exclamation point, Ax stumbled out of the corner and flopped forward, landing head-first on Troll's groin.  Owie.

"The Old School Warrior" Chaz Wesson vs. "The Iceman" Howard Moritz:  Iceman had his International Dance Championship trophy with him, but it was presumably not at stake here.  This was more competitive than I was expecting, to be honest...it definitely raised Iceman's stock in this area.  Chaz rallied only to be cut off by Iceman, but when Iceman tried to use his trophy as a weapon, Chaz got the pinfall with an O'Connor Roll in 10:21.  Iceman was quick to get some payback for his defeat, leveling Wesson with the trophy and beating him down with it before taking his leave.  Wesson called Herb out to the ringside area and asked him rather directly to sign a rematch between himself and Iceman...ahem.

"Your Canadian Hero" Sean Vincent vs. "Volatile" Curtis Wylde(w/ Wyldefyre), strap match, Wyldefyre handcuffed to the ringpost:  Wylde spent most of his recent matches in retreat mode, so Vincent wanted insurance that Wylde wouldn't be able to run away.  Also, Wylde won their August encounter via countout thanks to a cheapshot by Wyldefyre with a brick-loaded purse, so the cuffing was an attempt to neutralize her involvement.  These two have put on some really good matches in their recent series, something that has gone outside of SICW on a few occasions.  In particular, the characters are great foils for each other as the down-to-earth Vincent battles the more extravagant Wylde couple.

Even with Wyldefyre cuffed to the post, she was still able to interject herself by tripping Vincent when he was near her corner of the ring.  There were several close calls exchanged as each guy would tag three turnbuckles but be cut off before reaching the fourth.  That included the requisite spot where the heel neglects the position of the strap and gets crotched with it by the face...eep.  Vincent nearly won only to be pulled backwards into the Wylde Ride(Flatliner), then Wylde hogtied him with the strap and dragged him around the ring.  Unbeknownst to him, Vincent was tagging the turnbuckles behind him...so it turned into a struggle once they each had three tagged corners.  It's been a popular finish to this style of match(whether it be a strap, chain, or bullrope involved), but it usually goes over great.  In a nice twist with some continuity added, Wyldefyre tried to stop Vincent with her loaded purse but hit her own man by mistake...that gave Vincent the opening to tag the final corner and win in 10:56!

Vincent would have been forced to leave SICW if he had lost, but instead the Wylde couple became her servants for a whole weekend.  Vincent informed them to be at his family ranch bright and early...bwahahaha.  Curtis stormed away from ringside and left his lady cuffed to the ringpost...the ringside policeman teased leaving her there before he finally unlocked the handcuffs.  As Wyldefyre ran to the backstage area, Curtis grabbed her by the hair and angrily blamed her for the loss...uh-oh, there's some trouble in paradise.

"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson vs. Brandon Espinosa:  These two have battled several times, mostly in the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance over the Heavyweight Title.  Jackson, like many fan favorites in SICW, has issues with Travis Cook's crew and that caused their paths to cross again.  Espinosa targered the arm after Gary hit the ringpost shoulder-first, working toward his cross-armbreaker finisher.  Gary made the comeback, but Chris Hargas brought out Attila Khan to attack Gary for the DQ finish in 7:49.  The Travis Cook Organization beat down Jackson three-on-one, ending with Espinosa hooking the cross-armbreaker.  Gary left the ring area with his arm in obvious pain...

Cue intermission numero dos...nice that it's not as hot outside so the building wasn't as stuffy as it had been in previous months...

Flash Flanagan vs. Heath Hatton for the Classic Title:  After a few indecisive finishes, Flanagan won the title from Hatton through nefarious means about a year ago.  Hatton took time off from wrestling to recover from nagging injuries while Flash defended the championship, losing it to Gary Jackson before winning it right back.  Heath returned a few months ago and worked his way up the rankings to earn his return match for the title against a man he had never decisively beaten...so yup, just a bit of backstory here.  Big Daddy came out to watch the match and mingle with the fans...no real idea about his true purpose at ringside.  He's been associated with Red River Jack, Ron Powers(...not that they're the same person or anything... *shifty eyes*), Gary Jackson, and Daniel Eads in the past, so he had no official interest in this one.

At any rate...wrestling match, yay~!  A missed kneedrop by Flanagan set up some leg work by Hatton and a figure-four leglock, but Flash barely made it to the ropes.  When Heath went for the hold again, he was kicked away and the momentum caused him to knock the referee down.  *cue ominous music*  Hatton took Flanagan down into the Crippler Crossface(that's how he won the title from Ken Kasa last year~!) but there was no one to see the tapout.  Hatton agonized over what to do next, but in the meantime Flash got his kendo stick and beat down the challenger with the weapon.  Big Daddy called Ron Powers out to the ring and he dropped Flash with an RKO, then put Hatton on top as the referee recovered.  The official counted one...two...but then he smelled a rat as he saw the kendo stick in the ring and Powers still standing there.  As a result, he called for the bell and disqualified Hatton, awarding the match to Flanagan in 11:26.  D-OH!  Hatton had words with Powers after the match, saying he didn't need any help and Powers had cost him the match.  Heath stormed away from the ring area, leaving a brief Flanagan/Powers confrontation before Flash got away with his belt.

Flanagan vs. Powers for the title has already been announced for the October show, so I guess that was Powers' interest in the match...I can imagine that bout won't sit well with Hatton.  Not sure if Attila Khan will be facing Gary Jackson or Ricky Cruz(who was conspicuous by his absence on this night).  I'm sure we'll hear more in the coming weeks about how that show will shape up...

My weekend wasn't quite over as there was a show on Sunday night...but that's another commentary for another time.  Same Pat-Time, Same Pat-Channel...

Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.
