Now, as promised, a special comment about Sunday's Dynamo Pro Wrestling show at the 4 Hands Brewery in St. Louis, Missouri.
DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.
This was an outdoor show with free admission, starting at 1:00 in the afternoon. The Pro Wrestling Epic show from a few weeks ago was a scorcher...take that, eliminate most of the options for shade, add a bit more humidity, and you had this event. Despite that, the wrestling drew a pretty good crowd of onlookers...I didn't get the opportunity to sample the available cuisine(Seoul Taco, Gioia's Deli) and had to bug Ben Simon to buy me bottles of water since I didn't think to bring any cash. I also parked in a diner parking lot a few blocks away since I didn't have the five dollars for parking close to the building.
This was the third year in a row that Dynamo Pro Wrestling had a show on my birthday...yup, I'm now 38 years old. I have no problem with accepting belated gifts and you won't offend me with cash. *nodnodnod*
Your ring announcer was Chris Roedel, your assistant ring announcer was Luke Roberts, and your referees were Patrick "Sparkles" Hook and Jay King. (For whatever reason, Hook opted for a bedazzled version of your traditional striped shirt...)
The show started with an introduction of the two "teams" for the day...though the actual competition seemed to fall by the wayside over the course of the event. Notably, the "home team"(4 Hands Brewery) was represented by the rulebreakers while the fan favorites were supporting Strange Donuts. Each side had a mascot of sorts..."Super Flare"(guy dressed up like Ric Flair) for 4 Hands and "The Legion Of Done" for Strange Donuts. Music was played pretty consistently throughout the show, even as the matches were taking place.
"Cowboy" Ric Maverick vs. Bahamut: Maverick's name rang a bell but I don't think I had seen him before; someone told me he had been around wrestling for a while. Bahamut was a new big masked guy. This didn't go long before Heavyweight Champion Jake Dirden hit the ring to beat up both men, causing a no-contest in 1:29. D-OH!
"The Valedictorian" Keon Option vs. "The Alternative" Ozzie Gallagher: Gallagher made it clear that he was fighting for himself and the "Age Of Alternative" rather than for any sponsor or the "sheeple". These two traded wins early in the year before Gallagher was sidelined with a back injury; Gallagher wrestled at Outlaw Wrestling a few weeks ago, but this was his return to action in Dynamo. Option won a solid matchup with the axe kick in 6:04.
Rocket Mapache vs. The Snitch: I predicted that the masked guy would win this one. Most of the matches were kept short and for good reason; I was sweating like crazy in the heat, so I can only imagine how rough it was for the people who were wrestling outdoors in the full afternoon sun. Snitch pushed the ref into the ropes to crotch Rocket on the top turnbuckle, then got the cheap pin with feet on the ropes in 4:55. SNITCH WINS~! That evened the score between the two "teams", though the fan favorites would run away with it by the end...
Justin D'Air vs. Shawn Santel(w/ Mauler McDarby): In a case of ships passing in the night, "Mr. K" Dereck Krebs stopped by the Fenton show the previous night but former Metro East Championship Wrestling compatriots Santel & McDarby weren't on that show. I hadn't seen him since MECW closed up shop a few years ago. The Professionals are kinda underrated in the grand scheme of Dynamo, especially since they weren't working Missouri shows for a bit there. They're a more old-school pair of guys that might fit into a product like WLW (or SICW if that group had a tag team division). The Dynamo trio of Outlaw/D'Air/Option have all been making waves on the St. Louis wrestling scene; I look forward to seeing how far they all go. D'Air rallies the fans behind him with a chant of "Donuts"...yup. He got the victory with the 450 Splash in 4:06...Santel ended up with a bloody(apparently broken) nose as D'Air's knee caught him in the face. OW.
Intermission~! Concession total for the day was three bottles of water. Appreciate the folks who helped my cheapstake self out in that regard. Davey Richards & Angelina Love made their way out to the merchandise table for autograph signing at this point...their appearance had flown under the radar after they had to cancel on their Saturday appearance, but they were in attendance for this particular day. The two are expecting their first child, so congrats to them on that...
"The Yoga Monster" Mike Sydal vs. Outtkast: While Outtkast was out with the Strange Donuts crew at the start of the show, Sydal didn't appear with either faction; this played out as a face-vs.-face matchup. Mike wrestled barefoot for some reason(he usually has boots)...that couldn't have been easy with the summer heat. Would like to see these two have a longer match in the future as they worked pretty well together. Sydal won with the Yogasault in 5:08...as Outtkast made his exit, he borrowed my Wayne's World cap since his shaved head was getting sunburnt. Heh.
"The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz vs. Kevin Lee Davidson: This shaped up to be an interesting bout...it was a slightly closer size matchup than K.L.D.'s usual opposition, though Ricky was still at a disadvantage in that regard. Working with someone of Cruz's experience will help a newcomer like Davidson to hone his craft; this is another pairing that I hope will get another go-around. Ricky's experience won out in the end as he superkicked the big man to the mat, then followed up with a Macho Elbow for the three-count in 5:40.
Mike Outlaw vs. Mauler McDarby(w/ Shawn Santel): With the fan favorites in the lead as far as the team competition was concerned, I wondered if K.L.D. or McDarby might pull off a surprise win(cheaply or otherwise). As it turned out, they weren't paying too much attention to the score...heh. They had a solid matchup; Outlaw finished with the Mafia Kick in 6:20.
"Dirdey/Intelligent Monster" Jake Dirden vs. Davey Richards for the Heavyweight Title: This one caught me completely by surprise; I had no idea Davey would be wrestling on this show. This was originally scheduled to happen at a previous Dynamo event, but Richards was unable to attend that show. Dirden attacked Richards during his entrance to kick-start the matchup. They had a really good (if short) main event with Davey trying to take out the big man's legs while Dirden attempted to dominate with his power. The respective mascots for 4 Hands and Strange Donuts approached the ring to root for their respective sides. Richards got a near-fall after a double-stomp off the top rope, then hooked a figure-four leglock...unfortunately, the tension at ringside reached a boiling point and the mascots entered the ring to fight. This caused enough of a distraction that Davey released the hold...Dirden was able to recover and take out Davey with the Cure(chokeslam), scoring a huge win in 5:30!
As for the rest of the holiday weekend, I had dinner with my dad on Sunday evening and got my brake pads replaced on Monday(so much for getting extra sleep on Labor Day!). Yesterday, I had to get my driver's license renewed...had one of the better license photos that I've ever had, and that's saying something from a person who is eternally dissatisfied with his personal appearance. Bwahahaha...
Anywho, the month rolls on...the rest of September looks like this:
