Saturday DPW Results From St. Louis, MO + Other Show Results

-Jackal vs. Ricky Rodriguez ended in a no-contest when newcomer Jimmi LaFleur attacked both men (4:21).
-D-1 Title Tournament: “The Valedictorian” Keon Option d. “The Gypsy Warrior” Orion Creed with the axe kick (7:25).
-D-1 Title Tournament: The Snitch d. Outtkast after interference by Tag Team Champions The Agents Of Chaos(Viktor Von Stein & Xavier Shadows); Shadowz distracted the referee as Von Stein tripped Outtkast during a superplex attempt, causing Snitch to fall on top for the win (9:35).
-Savanna Stone d. “The” Ace Hawkins after the Sliced Bread #2 (13:54). Hawkins attacked Savanna after the match until Brandon Espinosa made the save, setting up an impromptu matchup…
-Brandon Espinosa d. “The” Ace Hawkins after Savanna stopped Ace from using a chair, leading to Espy winning with the brainbuster (9:25).
-The Agents Of Chaos(Viktor Von Stein & Xavier Shadowz) d. “The Master Of Hairflips” Brandon Aarons & “Lights Out” Adrian Surge to retain the Tag Team Titles; The Snitch interfered by pushing Aarons off the top rope, allowing Shadowz to roll him up with a handful of tights (15:15). Outtkast ran in to help Aarons & Surge during the post-match attack by The Agents & Snitch.
-Tootie Lynn Ramsey d. Rahne Victoria by reversing an O’Connor Roll and bridging while holding the middle rope for illegal leverage (8:23).
-D-1 Title Tournament: Jayden Dominic Rose d. “The Mercenary” Graham Bell with the windup short-arm roundhouse kick (14:00).
-”The Wind Of Destruction” Makaze d. Mike Outlaw to retain the Heavyweight Title. Makaze focused his attack on Outlaw’s arm but the former champion was able to fight back into the match. Near the end, Makaze slid out of the ring and hid a metal plate under his ring gear...when Outlaw delivered his High Noon elbowdrop off the top rope, he hurt his own arm on the landing. Makaze got the rollup pin after that (12:33).

SICW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about last Saturday's Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling show at the Community Center in East Carondelet, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

SICW had a solid turnout for its monthly show in East Carondelet...they're building up to their annual Wrestling At The Chase anniversary show in May.  So far the announced guests will be Barbara Goodish(wife of the late Bruiser Brody) and "Dr. D" David Schultz.  April will be a two-show month for them with a Millstadt fundraiser on April 7th.

Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus; your referees were Jay King, Nick Ridenour, & Shaft.

Billy McNeil & "Your Canadian Hero" Sean Vincent vs. The Professionals(Shawn Santel & Mauler McDarby):  The two sides traded Facebook videos in the previous week with the Professionals questioning whether their rivals were true "heroes".  McNeil & Vincent had plenty of tag team success with other partners, but they've traditionally been enemies so this partnership was a surreal one for long-time fans to witness.  The Professionals isolated McNeil and targeted his arm, leading to McNeil's shoulder being injured after a single-arm DDT by Santel...the referee stopped the match in 4:46 and was prepared to award it to The Professionals due to the injury, but Vincent asked for the match to continue and said he would fight on his own.  (See, that's what HEROES~! do.)

Vincent weathered the storm for several minutes after the restart, though the possibility of victory seemed remote...but McNeil returned to the ring area with his shoulder bandaged, wanting to tag into the match!  Billy entered the fray and fought as well as he could with a bad shoulder...Vincent hit the Death Valley Driver on Santel but McDarby broke up the pin.  The match continued and Vincent hit another DVD as McNeil went to the top rope, but the 15:00 time limit expired (call it 10:14 of the restart)...of course The Professionals felt like they should have won ten minutes earlier due to the injury, but oh well.

"The Wrestling Machine" Dave Vaughn vs. The Big Texan:  These two crossed paths in the past but it's been a while...the roles have been reversed as Vaughn was the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance Heavyweight Champion at the time and now Texan holds that title.  Both guys have challenged for the SICW Classic Wrestling Title but neither has captured the gold in this promotion yet.  Things weren't settled on this night as Texan pretty blatantly kicked Vaughn in the Universal Weak Point(tm), then threw him over the top rope for the DQ in 4:03.  A nearby fan joked that somehow the blatant low blow wasn't cause for a disqualification but the toss out of the ring put it over the top.

Jake Prater vs. "Volatile" Curtis Wylde(w/ Wyldefyre):  I've been seeing Prater a bit more in recent months; this was his SICW debut.  Despite being outmatched in size and power, Wylde had the advantage in experience as well as intelligence...not to mention the presence of Wyldefyre outside the ring.  Prater gave Wylde a good fight, but fell to the Wyde Ride(Paydirt) in 7:16.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Bottle of water, soft pretzel, Mountain Dew.

Moondog Rover vs. Khayman:  Even Ben Simon is unsure of the "correct" spelling of Khayman's name.  He went by Kahyman in his previous run and his T-shirts have that spelling, but I've seen both spellings used.  This was Khayman's first SICW appearance in a long time; I recall seeing him at one of the first shows I attended at the East Carondelet Community Center in 2007.  His daughter Abigail was not at ringside for this one, presumably because there isn't much ringside space at these shows.  Khayman had a better showing than I would have expected by targeting Moondog's leg, but the former MMWA Heavyweight Champion hit the front powerslam to win in 7:06.

Keith Smith Jr.(w/ "The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz) vs. King Christopher Hargas(w/ Travis Cook):  At least Hargas and Cook deemed Keith Jr. worthy...last month, Hargas took a walk and got counted out when presented with Bobby D as an opponent.  Of course Cruz and Cook have a whole lot of history.  Keith Jr. dominated the early minutes of the bout, even delivering an impressive top-rope splash for a near-fall...but Hargas used his experience advantage to turn the tide.  While Hargas was the smaller of the two, he showed impressive power in delivering his signature F-5...but he only got a two-count after a delayed pin cover.  In the tradition of previous grappling monarchs, Hargas delivered a piledriver but pulled up Smith rather than score a potential pinfall.  He hit a second piledriver, but that only got a two-and-a-half count...so Hargas went for the kill by delivering a THIRD piledriver.  Once again Hargas passed on a pin attempt, opting to lock on the Crippler Crossface...while Keith Jr. wasn't the type to surrender, Ricky threw in the towel to preserve his brother-in-law's career.  That ended the match via referee stoppage in 12:42...Smith had to be assisted from the ring area and an enraged Cruz challenged Hargas to a match to get his revenge!  Cruz hadn't wrestled since retiring a year and a half ago, but promoter Herb Simmons made it so...the match would take place on Saturday, April 7th in Millstadt!

"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson vs. Axeman Clint Poe(w/ Big Daddy):  Gary Jackson Fashion Watch(tm):  Green coat, lime-green singlet.  If The Lumberjacks were still around, I could see Abe & Gabe taking umbrage with Poe and Marc Houston's team name.  The former Classic Champion had a tough fight against his larger opponent, but he nearly got him in the Texas Cloverleaf before Big Daddy stuck his nose into things.  (Noted, Big Daddy briefly managed Jackson at the time he won the SICW Title.)  Poe attacked Jackson from behind and the two brawled to a double countout in 9:26...afterwards, Jackson mentioned THE RULES~! and vowed that things weren't over between himself and Big Daddy's crew.

Intermission numero dos~!  Concessions were half off at this point, but they were out of cheeseburgers...aww.  I settled for the aforementioned soft pretzel.

"Ironman" Ken Kasa vs. Axeman Marc Houston(w/ Big Daddy & Clint Poe) for the Classic Title:  Kasa won the title from Chris Hargas in October and fended off all challengers, including a memorable best-of-three-falls bout with Hargas that went to a sixty-minute draw.  He defeated Poe in February but still had the other Axeman on his agenda.  The two brawled outside the ring right out of the gate...once things got back in the ring, Kasa took control until a missed kneedrop gave Houston the opening to attack the leg.  Poe got involved and Houston hit the LARIATOOOOO~!, but Kasa was in the ropes and escaped defeat.  Poe's second attempt at interference backfired and Kasa took out both Poe and Big Daddy before lining up for the John Wu Dropkick...but Houston sidestepped the move and drove him down to the mat with a second LARIATOOOOO~! for the shocking title win in 8:47!  Ladies and gentlemen, we have a NEWWWWW SICW Classic Wrestling Champion:  Marc Houston!

It was announced in the past few days that Houston will defend his title against former three-time champion Flash Flanagan on April 21st...also on that show, Sean Vincent faces King Christopher Hargas in a best-of-three-falls match.  I've only heard Cruz-Hargas for April 7th in Millstadt...updates as warranted, of course.

My weekend wasn't quite over as I attended Glory Pro's Resurgence show last Sunday in Swansea, IL, but that's another story for another time...as for this weekend, Dynamo Pro Wrestling has a show tonight at Concordia Turners Gymnasium in St. Louis, MO.  Tune in next time for the stories on those shows...Same Pat-Time, Same Pat-Channel!

That's my special comment for this, the seventeenth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2018.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

WWE NXT

-Commentators:  Mauro Ranallo, Nigel McGuinness, & "Showtime" Percy Watson.
-Earlier today:  Tommaso Ciampa confronted General Manager S. William Regal, saying that Johnny Gargano has been stalking and attacking him at the building, in the parking lot, and even at his home...so what's going to be done about it?  Regal said that Ciampa would face Gargano in an unsanctioned match at Takeover:  Gargano wins, he gets his job back; Ciampa wins, Gargano's barred from NXT forever.
-In-arena:  Regal announced that a new title would be created and the first NXT North American Champion would be crowned at Takeover.  Ethan Carter III made his big entrance and expected to be handed the title, but Regal said he'd have to earn it like everybody else:  He would be in the six-way ladder match for the belt.
-Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament:  The Authors Of Pain(Akam Dhinsa & Rezar Selmani)(w/ Paul Ellering) d. The Street Profits(Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford); Akam pinned Dawkins after he and Rezar hit the Last Chapter(Russian legsweep/lariat combo) (2:33).
-Backstage:  Regal added Adam Cole to the ladder match; "The Velveteen Dream" Patrick Clark approached him about being in the match and was added as well.
-Lars Sullivan d. John Silver with the Freak Accident(waistlock uranagi) (1:37).
-Backstage:  Regal told Lars that he's in the ladder match.  Lars said he wanted to face Killian Dain; Regal made it so, along with mentioning that Dain was in the ladder match as well.
-Dakota Kai's scheduled match never officially started as NXT Champion Andrade "Cien" Almas(w/ Zelina Vega) attacked Aleister Black backstage and brought him to the ring to beat him down with a chair.
-Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament:  United Kingdom Champion "The Bruiserweight" Pete Dunne & Roderick Strong d. Sanity(Eric Young & Alexander Wolfe); Dunne pinned Young after he and Strong hit an Olympic Slam faceplant/Flapjack double-team (8:40 aired).
-Backstage:  Regal says that he just finalized the final participant in the ladder match:  Ricochet!
-Next week:  Lars vs. Dain, plus Dunne & Strong vs. Authors Of Pain in the Dusty Classic final.

Comedy Part 795: Hey Guys, Second Semifinal

Location: Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee: Me
Lineup: Nicholas Cuvar, Lucas Hinderliter, Spencer Tegtmeyer, Shon Don, Shannon Yarbrough, Johnny Pants, Meredith Hopping, Tom Brown

The contest went swimmingly once again...as for my show-closing set, I opted for a bit I don't do very often: The story of an open-mic emcee literally introducing me as a rapist. The nice thing about this particular format was that I had time on my side, so I was able to let the reaction to the initial statement play out. It's just a matter of figuring out the best way to follow that up. Congrats to the four finalists: Spencer, Shannon, Shon Don, and Johnny Pants! Finals are next Wednesday!

NWL Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Friday's National Wrasslin' League show at the Elks Lodge in O'Fallon, Missouri.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

A lot of notable things have been happening in the NWL; Maverick regained the Spirit Of NWL Title from Gary Jay, plus The Besties In The World(Davey Vega & Mat Fitchett) won the Tag Titles from The Foundation(Michael Strider & Ace Steel) in a street fight.  On top of that, Todd Letterman(Kevin Lee Davidson) returned on the side of Matt Jackson to feud with Dak Draper.  Maverick turned down an offer to join the Jackson Administration and dumped Drew Gold in the process, but Thor Theriot was a bit more receptive to the opportunity and joined Gold's growing stable.  The YouTube and television content is a bit behind on these events, which can leave the St. Louis crowd in a bit of a lurch...I don't think the fans around here follow the Kansas City goings-on as closely as they think.  You've got a big video screen at the shows...use it.

Your ring announcer was Ben Simon; your referees were Michael Crase & David Gulick.

Mat Waterman(w/ Tootie Lynn Ramsey) vs. S.K. Bishop:  With the show taking place on March 16th(you know, "3/16"), Waterman came out to the old "Stone Cold" Steve Austin Disturbed theme music with a Waterman 3:16 entrance video.  Waterman is a rookie from the NWL Performance Center who just recently made his debut; I'd never seen Bishop before.  Tootie brought enough enthusiasm for everyone, to her credit.  Waterman utilized some Austin-esque tactics as well as his own arsenal...he won after a swinging uranagi in 6:32.

Mike Outlaw vs. Everett Connors(w/ Rasheed Ali):  I feel like these two have crossed paths in one-on-one competition in the past, but the time and place escapes me.  Music producer Ali gave his client a grandiose introduction and also wasn't above getting involved in the match; this one could have easily gone either way without outside factors.  Outlaw had things going his way, but Ali made enough of a nuisance of himself that Outlaw chased him around the ring and then through the ropes...Connors seized the opening and rolled up Outlaw with a handful of tights in 9:03 to get the cheap win.

Will Lowe vs. Leonel Howlett:  Lowe is Alpha Omega's Kenny Alfonso working under his real name; he wore a mask for this match for some reason.  He recently appeared on Smackdown alongside Mat Fitchett against the Bludgeon Brothers...which went about as well for them as you'd expect.  Lowe had a very impressive outing here as he showed great speed and agility...but the battle-tested Howlett has been in some recent wars with competitors on the level of Jimmy Jacobs and Eddie Kingston.  The only question is where he true focus lies:  On singles glory or tag team gold with Marco?  Leonel scored a hard-fought win with a pop-up Diamond Cutter in 7:55.

"The Mile-High Magnum" Dak(ota) Draper vs. Rasheed Ali(w/ Everett Connors):  Connors was ejected from ringside fairly quickly, forcing Ali to fight on his own against the former Kansas City Champion.  This was a surprisingly long match that unfortunately didn't draw a lot of crowd noise; I don't think the people bought Ali as much of a threat to the nearly-undefeated Draper.  Dak picked up the victory with the Mile-High Doctor Bomb in an even 10:00.

"The Five-Star Phenom" Todd Letterman vs. "The Professional Lowlife" Christian Rose:  Rose spoke his mind before the match, proclaiming Letterman to be a quitter for leaving NWL last year after his St. Louis Title loss.  The setup here was a bit suspect as they seemed to expect a positive crowd response for Letterman on his home turf; the problems with this were that a) Letterman was a rulebreaker for his entire NWL run, b) Kevin Lee Davidson has competed as a rulebreaker in the St. Louis area for the better part of the past year, and c) Letterman returned to NWL as a rulebreaker by attacking Dak Draper.  Letterman's reception was far more lukewarm than one might have expected...it got to the point where Rose attempted to play to the crowd like a fan favorite to get SOME noise out of them.  The match itself was a good one, but the circumstances just weren't favorable on this occasion.  Rose busted out a Stone Cold Stunner(3/16!) for a near-fall, but Letterman planted him with the spinebuster before finishing with the Endzone Spike(pumphandle Michinoku Driver) in 12:36.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Dr. Pepper, Payday candy bar, Coca-Cola.  Unless you're getting water, concessions at NWL are a bit pricey($2 for soda and $3 for a candy bar?).  During intermission, the big-screen video was a feature on Maverick's recent WWE Performance Center tryout (the true reason for his "walkout" prior to getting his title rematch with Gary Jay).

"The Raging Bull" Maverick vs. "The Connoisseur" Niles Plonk for the Spirit Of NWL Title, no-DQ match:  The enthusiasm level wasn't looking good to start...Plonk got very little reaction despite his pre-match promo.  Since the title is contested under the no-DQ stipulation by default, the other members of Top Shelf Entertainment(Everett Connors & Rasheed Ali) hit the ring immediately after the bell to gang-attack Maverick.  Former titleholder Gary Jay ran out to help, clearing out the extra parties to make it one-on-one...he even made a point to shake hands with Maverick before departing(MUTUAL RESPECT~!).  That was a positive step to get the fans behind Maverick, but it'll be a tough road...I once referred to Maverick as the Roman Reigns of the NWL, but at least Maverick had a rulebreaking run to freshen up his character.  The match turned into a pretty good battle with Maverick retaining his title via LARIATOOOOO~! in an even 10:00 (wow, twice in one night).

The Royal Blood(Jet & Jax Royal) vs. Thor Theriot & Thomas Shire(w/ Drew Gold):  Both Royals were plagued by injuries in 2017; Jax was on the shelf for so long that I legitimately wondered if he was out for good (Jet even formed a regular partnership with Anthony "Sharkbait" Gutierrez in recent months).  Thor seemed to be a bit bland as a fan favorite and often needed a dynamic rulebreaking personality as his foil (i.e. Jeremy Wyatt), so I think a rulebreaking run with Gold as his manager will benefit him greatly.  The Royals didn't have their names on their gear like usual (though they had their names on their SHIRTS which they removed before the bout), so I had trouble keeping them straight.  A more observant colleague noted that Jet appeared to be doing most of the work for his side, thus allowing Jax to ease his way back into in-ring competition (this was his first match in several months, after all).  Jax did get the hot tag near the end of the bout, leading into the finishing sequence where he delivered a crucifix bomb on Theriot as Jet hit a running Buff Blockbuster!  Gold distracted the referee and Shire turned the pinning combination so that Thor was on top, but Jet re-reversed the positions and his brother got the winning fall on Theriot in 11:52!

Savanna Stone vs. Rahne Victoria:  This was almost exactly one year to the day of both women's in-ring debuts against each other.  In just that year, they've traveled all over the country and competed against a wide variety of opponents...but the feud between the two continues to this day.  These two had a couple of rough spots in the match but worked through them fairly well; it happens from time to time.  I'm sure they'll face each other again down the line (way to go out on a limb, huh?)...Savanna tilt-a-whirled into a small package for the pinfall in a brisk 4:36.

Jack Foster, "The Stiff Robo Ginger" Gary Jay, & "Dominican Dynamite" Marti Belle vs. Kansas City Champion "The Monarch" Jeremy Wyatt, Michael Strider, & Carolina Rodriguez:  Foster has his sights set on Wyatt's title and has a couple of title shots coming up(including one at the show tonight in K.C.).  On the ladies' side, Marti has been itching to get Carolina in the ring only to be constantly sidestepped, with Carolina claiming injuries AND putting alternate opponents in her path.  Gary and Strider chop really hard.  With mixed tag rules in effect, there was a lot of do-si-do as Carolina would tag in, Marti would enter the ring, and then Carolina would quickly tag out.  While Gary was isolated by the Foundation duo/trio for a long stretch, it was inevitable that this fight would get out of hand...it ended with the other parties brawling to the backstage area, leaving Foster and Wyatt in the ring.  Wyatt went to the top in an attempt to finish off Foster, but Marti re-entered in time to grab Wyatt's foot and distract him from the task at hand.  That momentary loss of focus was enough of an opening for Foster to mount a comeback, pinning Wyatt after a spear in 20:36!

I'm caught up for the moment, but I've got a two-show weekend ahead...Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling has its monthly offering tonight in East Carondelet, IL (best wishes to those at Proving Ground Pro tonight as well!).  Tomorrow night, Glory Pro Wrestling has a show in Swansea, IL in a revival of the Pro Wrestling Resurgence brand...a one-night eight-man tournament will not only determine an opponent for "The Zombie Princess" Jimmy Jacobs at the next big Glory Pro event, but will also crown a new Resurgence Champion!  March wraps up for me with Dynamo Pro Wrestling back at Concordia Turners Gymnasium in St. Louis, MO on Saturday the 31st!

That's my special comment for this, the sixteenth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2018.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

P.S. We are all marks.

Location:  Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee:  Me
Lineup:  Ron Finger, Rich Braun, Nathan Orton, Andy Hamilton, Will O'Donnell, Wayne Wiskow, Brian McDowell, Jimmy Day

The contest is getting down to the nitty-gritty, so to speak.  This night was a real toss-up as it related to who would advance to the finals, but a few standout performances made the difference (no one went over time).  My set was kinda ehh, in my opinion...a few jokes fell flat, but I was able to recover well enough.  Congrats to those advancing to the finals:  Nathan Orton, Will O'Donnell, Wayne Wiskow, and Jimmy Day!

WOE Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Sunday's Wrestling Over Everything show at the River's Edge Community Center in Centreville, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

The previous month, I thought the start time was 6 P.M. when it was actually 5, causing me to miss the first few matches.  This time around, I was prepared to go to the building at 5...and it turned out that the show was scheduled to begin at 6.  Well, better early than late...and I needed to run to the store to get new shoes anyway, so I did that before returning to the venue for the actual start to the event.  All righty then.

While Darkside is technically the General Manager of WOE, he has yet to appear in person in that capacity.  The previous month, The Landlord just seemed to be in charge ANYWAY...this time around, Darkside did speak to the fans via video screen.  Darkside put Landlord on video commentary duty with Kaelin for the evening.

Your ring announcer was Chris Kaelin; your referee was Jason Pemberton.

Azrael Knight & Jayson Virtue(w/ Celina) vs. The Sabotage Squad(Krispy 2 Pop & John Boi):  While Virtue won the four-corner match in February to determine who would get a WOE contract, two other participants in that match would wrestle on this show(Knight being one of them).  I've liked what I've seen out of Knight, which admittedly has consisted of the two most recent WOE events.  Krispy has looked motivated in recent outings as well.  The Sabotage Squad fought Da'Marius Jones & LaMarcus Clinton to a time-limit draw in February and felt they should have gotten another shot at the belts, but it was not to be on this night.  The finish saw Krispy hit an inverted swinging neckbreaker on Knight, then John Boi delivered a heavyweight version of a standing moonsault for the pin in 8:49.

The Rock Lobster vs. Jake Prater:  I hadn't seen the Midwest version of Rock Lobster in a while...he actually came out to The Rock's old WWE theme.  I think CHIKARA had its own version of Rock Lobster at one time.  The masked man didn't fare too well against his much larger opponent...Prater finished him with the powerbomb in 1:32.

David X vs. Orange Lazarus:  David X was the other participant in last month's four-corner match for a contract who appeared on this show.  He's a fairly small competitor, to the point that Lazarus may have had a slight size edge on him.  This was a much better showing for X than the previous month, in my dumb opinion; he picked up the win with a cutthroat version of the old Zack Attack in 1:51.

Intermission~!  This was oddly timed and announced as only a short break...Brandon Espinosa was scheduled for the show but did not appear for unknown reasons.  Heavyweight Champion Leone Mephisto came out and complained that he had no challenger for his title, instead only being relegated to a tag match.  He said he would issue an open challenge with the belt at stake...that usually doesn't end well for a "bad guy", I've found...

Leone Mephisto vs. Mason Alexander for the Heavyweight Title:  Alexander was Espy's scheduled opponent...he looked good against the champion here but it wasn't quite enough.  Mephisto overcame a spirited effort, putting him away with the Air Raid Crash in 5:21...Ace Roberts was on assignment, I can only assume.

Intermission numero dos~!  (This was the full-fledged break, for reference.)  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Cheeseburger, bottle of water, potato chips, and Pepsi.

The Big Texan vs. B.T. Daramola:  Despite Texan's methods being those of a traditional rulebreaker, he has a bit of a fanbase in some parts of the Midwest.  B.T. wasn't about to make this an easy night as the fight spilled out to the floor and a chair was used in the ensuing brawl.  Still, Texan's size and power edge won out as he delivered the chokeslam and big splash for the victory in 5:50.

"2.0" Da'Marius Jones & LaMarcus Clinton vs. The X Klan Mafia(Zaiden Kayne & Chuck Chronic)(w/ The Coach) for the Tag Team Titles:  "Zaiden Kayne" may be the most indie wrestling name ever; I believe the team hails from Tennessee.  Jones and L.M.C. are coming together well as a team and I thought this was a really good matchup; The Coach(not John Tolos) got in his cheapshots, as you might expect.  It was anybody's ballgame, but The Sabotage Squad ran in to attack the champs for the DQ in 11:02...aww.  As you might expect, this didn't sit well with the challengers who were just robbed of their championship opportunity...

"The Unholy Father" Richard Faith vs. Billy McNeil for the Interstate Title:  Faith screwed McNeil out of the title in February so REMATCH CLAUSE~!  It didn't take long for this one to get out of control as they fought on the floor, leading to Billy pulling out a RIDICULOUSLY DANGEROUS~! somersault dive off the entrance stage.  McNeil stopped Faith from walking out on the match at one point(since a countout would save his title), but Faith used the referee as a shielf when McNeil went to the top rope to finish.  The official stopped Faith from using his good book as a weapon once again, but as he was removing the book, Faith leveled McNeil with the title belt and pinned him in 10:18.

"The Infamous" Tyler Copeland & Benjamin Ulysses Trust vs. Heavyweight Champion Leone Mephisto & P.T. Beckham:  This stemmed from events at the February show...Mephisto and Beckham weren't exactly on the same page as Beckham wanted a title shot just as badly as their two opponents.  They worked together at times but it never lasted too long...that probably made the difference in this one, especially near the end when Mephisto took a walk.  With Beckham on his own, Trust finished him off with a faceplant variation of an Olympic Slam(I'm told it's called the Trust Buster) in 10:38.  I suspect Copeland will be gunning for his championship rematch, but Trust has put himself in a good position for a future title shot as well.

This past weekend was relatively light with the only immediately-local option being the National Wrasslin' League show in O'Fallon, MO on Friday.  I thought about checking out some other events, but I've been kinda worn out lately and needed the downtime.  At any rate, NWL is another story for another time...

This coming weekend has Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling's monthly offering in East Carondelet, IL with "Ironman" Ken Kasa defending the Classic Wrestling Title against Cowboy Marc Houston...I haven't heard any other matches for that show.  SICW has a full few weeks as they return to Millstadt two weeks later on April 7th.  On Sunday, Glory Pro Wrestling will be in Swansea, IL with the Gateway To Glory Tournament...it will now be for the revived Pro Wrestling Resurgence Title as well as a future matchup with "The Zombie Princess" Jimmy Jacobs.  The show will also feature Jake Something defending the Crown Of Glory Title against "The Mad Dragon" Hakim Zane.

That's my special comment for this, the fifteenth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2018.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

WLW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about last Saturday's World League Wrestling show at the Tri-County Sports Center in Moscow Mills, Missouri.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

This was a big show for WLW in a different venue, titled Night Of Champions 3 with several special guests.  "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson was at the afternoon meet-and-greet but couldn't stick around for the evening show due to his WWE commitments.  The other guests included "The Mouth Of The South" Jimmy Hart, James J. Dillon, Cowboy Bob Orton, and "Big Poppa Pump" Scott Steiner.  The names on the show paid dividends as the event was said to be a legitimate sellout...between the packed house at this show and the capacity crowd on the other side of town for the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance, it was a good night for the pro wrestling.

Your ring announcers were Brian Thompson & Dane Horst; your referees were Richard White & Martin Kattich.

Tammy Fults sang the National Anthem to start off the show...most tremendous.

"The" Ace Hawkins vs. "KB Violence" Karim Brigante(w/ Miss Monica Passeri) for the MWR Missouri Title:  Hawkins won the title from Brandon Espinosa last July at a Dynamo Pro Wrestling event; he had defended the title at a few recent events, but he often preserved his reign by taking a walk for the countout loss.  It looked like this battle of speed vs. power would go in Brigante's favor...Ace attempted to gain the upper hand by using Monica as a shield outside the ring, but it didn't last long enough to achieve him victory.  When Ace attempted to take a hike once again, Monica put a stop to it and threw him back in the ring.  With Hawkins' escape option out the window, Brigante put him away with the pop-up forearm smash in 12:53 to become the NEWWWWW MWR Missouri Champion!  Hawkins had held the title for 232 days, but a new reign began in Moscow Mills...

"The Wrestler For The People" Rex Fults vs. "The Heartthrob" Jaden Roller(w/ "Can-Do" Curtis Dearling):  These guys have battled on several occasions with Roller usually getting the upper hand.  Curtis played a major role in a lot of those matches and this time was no different...but there was a countermeasure this time in the form of Jimmy Hart.  The Mouth Of The South ran to ringside and prevented Curtis from getting in a cheapshot with his briefcase, then shoved the younger manager down!  Unfortunately he didn't stay at ringside as Curtis attempted to stick his nose into things AGAIN...that allowed Roller to blindside Rex with his own nightstick and pin him in 11:10.  (I'd recommend keeping someone in your corner from bell to bell, is all...)

Jayden Dominic Rose vs. Jack Gamble, strap match for the Jr. Heavyweight Title:  Rose used his Harley Race Invitational Tournament trophy to cash in for an immediate title shot at the previous WLW show, upsetting Jon Webb and ending his lengthy championship reign.  Webb's longtime tag team partner Gamble would step up as Rose's first challenger and the bad blood was well established; the two fought for a few minutes before the referee could even secure the strap to each man's wrist and ring the opening bell.  It was tag-the-corners rules, which throws a different spin on finish teases...I don't think anyone went for pins.  At one point Rose blatantly removed the strap from his wrist and tagged all four turnbuckles, but the referee astutely told him that it didn't count...which earned him a punch to the face from the titleholder (no-DQ!).  Gamble rallied on offense(which allowed the official to refasten the strap around Rose's wrist) and tagged three corners, but Rose spit mist in Gamble's eyes before he could reach the fourth (THERE'S a new trick for him!).  With the challenger disabled, Rose was able to touch all four corners for the win in 16:38...both guys were showing the battle scars from the strap afterwards!

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm):  Coca-Cola and Sunkist orange soda.  Main quibble with the venue was that they were clearly not used to the number of people in attendance for the show; the restrooms were single-occupant and there was a line backed up for the men's room for the entire evening.

Announced for Troy, MO on June 2nd:  ULTIMO DRAGON!  Didn't see that coming.

Miss Monica Passeri vs. Savanna Stone for the Women's Title, special guest referee Stacey O'Brien:  With Monica as a fan favorite, I got to see Savanna as a rulebreaker for the first time...the merchandise section even had more "heelish" 8x10s for her, which was a nice touch.    (Perhaps the upbeat theme music will need adjustment for situations such as these...heh.)  Former titleholder Stacey was the official; she hadn't wrestled in quite some time and I'd even heard rumblings of possible retirement.  I'd seen this combination in the past but with the roles reversed; considering Savanna is traditionally the fan favorite, I thought the match went really well.  Monica did some damage to the arm as the match progressed, setting up the finish as Monica tilt-a-whirled into a Fujiwara armbar takedown for the submission in 8:56.  After the match, Stacey decided she wasn't QUITE done yet as she leveled Monica with the belt, then tried it on for size before leaving it with the titleholder in the ring.

"The Legacy" Leland Race(w/ "Can-Do" Curtis Dearling) vs. "The Hybrid Ace" Jon Webb for the Heavyweight Title, no-DQ match:  Race had held the title for nearly a year(323 days) and did battle with Webb several times in that span...even a thirty-minute Ironman Match didn't settle things as that bout ended in a draw.  In that time, Race edged closer to the Dark Side of The Force, finally lowering himself to acquiring the managerial services of Can-Do Curtis.  As a result of recent altercations with both Race and Jayden Dominic Rose(who defeated him for the Jr. Heavyweight Title in February), Webb's ribs were bandaged...of course, that put a bullseye on the injured area for the experienced titleholder.  Curtis conspicuously entered without the champion...as Webb turned his attention to the manager, Race jumped the guardrail to attack from behind.  A chair and a ring bell came into play in this one (no-DQ!) and Curtis got in his cheapshots as well, putting Webb at a disadvantage...I presume Gamble was indisposed due to the damage suffered earlier in the night.  The tide finally turned when a miscommunication led to Race decking his manager with the briefcase by mistake...Webb hit the moonsault and got a close near-fall.  Race brought in the chair once again, but missed a wild swing and it rebounded off the top rope into his face...Webb capitalized with the Asai DDT to finally capture the WLW Heavyweight Title in 20:48!

Intermission numero dos~!  Not much to add here...Savanna joked about whether I'm scared of her since she was a heel for the night.  For the record:  I'm scared of most people.

Superstar Steve Fender & Brandon Espinosa vs. "Big Poppa Pump" Scott Steiner & Kyle Roberts for the Tag Team Titles:  Fender & Espy defeated Roberts and Warwick Stephans to win the long-vacant Tag Titles, though the two had issues with getting on the same page.  When Stephans was injured and unable to attend the show where he and Roberts would get their rematch, Roberts fought on his own for the night and somehow managed to pull out the non-title win, giving him the opportunity to challenge for the belts with a partner of his choice.  Of course Steiner's history of tag team glory with his brother Rick was well-documented...Rick Steiner had appeared for WLW as well, even holding their Heavyweight Title.  If Steiner and Roberts were victorious on this night, it meant that both Steiner Brothers would have held WLW gold!  I wish I had brought my June 1992 WWF house show program from when the Steiners won the Tag Titles from Money Inc.(Ted DiBiase & Irwin R. Schyster)...I had Rick and DiBiase's autographs and could have gotten Scott's as well.

Fender & Espy knew the situation and seemed to be on better terms on this night...as Steiner made his entrance, the champions jumped him and destroyed him with chairs!  They made a point to "Pillmanize" his leg with the chairs...Steiner had to be assisted to the backstage area, meaning Roberts was once again in a two-on-one situation.  (I saw a few fans leave at this point, probably feeling like there was a bait-and-switch on some level.)  While the champions had things well in hand, a few instances of miscommunication derailed their momentum on a few occasions...so Roberts was able to last a lot longer than one might expect.  At a key moment, Steiner limped back out with a chair as a makeshift crutch...as the referee was occupied with Fender, Steiner tossed in the chair and Roberts used it for a Van Daminator on Espy!  That assist made the difference as Roberts got the winning three-count in 16:17...your newwwww WLW Tag Team Champions are Scott Steiner & Kyle Roberts!  Steiner spoke to the fans after the match, saying he wasn't feeling so good but his partner didn't need too much help in the end...but he would be back to defend the belts with Roberts.  All righty then!

That weekend wasn't quite over as I would make my way to Centreville for Wrestling Over Everything on Sunday...but that's another story for another time.  Tune in next time:  Same Pat-Time, Same Pat-Channel.

That's my special comment for this, the fourteenth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2018.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.
