One of the big questions of the evening regarded the amount of available talent. With Metro Pro, WLW, and MMWA also running on Saturday night, several key players were elsewhere. Only two people worked both Dynamo and MMWA(Ace Hawkins & Everett Connors).
Dynamo is slowly building an audience for the Fenton shows, though the promotion seems to be slightly behind the other area groups in terms of attendance numbers. There are plenty of possible reasons: The long layoff for soccer season in Glen Carbon and starting two new venues(not to mention the Tuesday night slot for Off Broadway). Either way, I wish I knew the answer to that question.
Not much was announced ahead of time; until a day or so before the event, I only knew about the Cruz-Dirden title rematch. I saw a few more matches on social media: Aarons-Gallagher, Bumrush Brothers vs. Viking War Party, and Evan "Money" Morris vs. Jack Gamble. Money wasn't at the show, so Gamble faced Shorty Biggs, Outtkast went one-on-one with Alexandre Rudolph, and Jake Parnell was in a triple threat match with Rocket Mapache and Everett Connors.
Your ring announcers were Chris Roedel & Luke Roberts, your referees were Patrick Hook and Keith Smith Jr.
"The Bosnian Warchild" Spi-Ral vs. Ace Hawkins: Spi-Ral enters the Midwest wrestling scene with an interesting resume; he's a multi-faceted competitor with martial arts experience. Going by a Google search, he's also gone by "S.P.I." and the name is an acronym for "Streets Produced an Icon, Raw And Legit". He's competed for Zero-One in Japan and has also wrestled in Puerto Rico. Long story short: He's not a total newbie. Thought he had a good showing for his first appearance in the area...look forward to seeing more of him in the future. The finish saw the referee stop Ace from using the ring bell as a weapon, but Hawkins kicked Spi-Ral in the Universal Weak Point as the ref was returning the bell to the timekeeper's table. Ace got the pinfall in 10:25.
"The Littlest Viking" Jake Parnell vs. Rocket Mapache vs. Everett Connors: This was a battle of three fan favorites...also, I think this was Connors' first triple threat match. I've heard mixed reviews on Parnell's viking character; it works when he's playing off Rudolph, but the "Gentleman" character might fit better when he's in a heel role. Also, I'm wondering if the furry boots are a drag on his 450 Splash finisher. The match was solid enough for an all-fan-favorite triple threat...Parnell pinned Mapache after the aforementioned 450 in 5:18.
Brandon Aarons vs. "The Alternative" Brandon Gallagher: I wish Dynamo had more undercard storylines. Gallagher had the feud with Dan Walsh, but after he got a DQ win in their first encounter, it seems like he's hit the skids himself. That's part of my reasoning for reviving the light heavyweight division: They have plenty of guys in that weight class who aren't in tag teams and aren't in a position to challenge for the main belt. (I'll get to the tag team division.) Aarons got the win with a unique finisher(pumphandle setup into a half-nelson released German suplex?) in 8:25.
Executive Director Mark Bland hyped the show and was confronted by Heavyweight Champion Ricky Cruz. The segment had the purpose of establishing that Jeremy Wyatt and Lucy Mendez were both absent(barred from the building) after they played a major role in Ricky's title win. Bland also made it a no-DQ match, but Cruz said that he didn't mind that style of match either...
"The Don Mega" Shorty Biggs vs. Jack Gamble(w/ Travis Cook): The Black Hand Warriors(Michael Magnuson & David DeLorean) were absent as they were at WLW; they're Tag Champs for both promotions. As such, Shorty got to continue his feud with the Travis Cook Organization(such as it is); Shorty was even managed by Cook for a brief time in his GCW days. I'd seen Gamble work as a rulebreaker in the past; in fact, he and Jon Webb were in that role against Shorty and Outtkast at one of the FIST shows at Pop's last year. Travis' distraction allowed Gamble to superkick Shorty for the win in 11:49 (that was the last match time I got).
Crystal Yount thanked the fans for their support and hyped the June 28th Glen Carbon event as Dynamo's anniversary show. She brought Evil Jim to the ring and let the fans know that Sunday was his birthday, leading to everyone singing Happy Birthday to him...heh.
Outtkast vs. "The American Viking" Alexandre Rudolph(w/ Jake Parnell): Not sure why Shorty wasn't in Outtkast's corner with Parnell in Rudolph's corner. As previously stated, this was supposed to be a tag bout...perhaps the Viking War Party will be positioned for a run at the Black Hand Warriors in the near future. Missouri licensing and alternate commitments seem to limit the tag team options, unfortunately. History was made as Outtkast actually hit the corkscrew moonsault senton(I swear the opponent almost ALWAYS rolls out of the way of that) and it was good enough for the victory.
"The King Of Chaos" Ricky Cruz vs. "Dirdey" Jake Dirden, no-DQ match for the Heavyweight Title: This definitely lived up to the expected environment. Cruz's tumble out of the ring and through the timekeeper's table happened completely out of the blue. Even in a no-disqualification format, Ricky found a way to weasel out of a fair fight...one of the hardest hits of the match was probably the kendo stick shot on referee Patrick Hook! Both refs AND Mark Bland were down by the time it was over...I believe this was the first time Bland had gotten physically involved in a situation. He's been teasing a return to the ring for a while and I wonder what's planned for the anniversary show. After cuffing Dirden's hands behind his back, Ricky laid him out with the title belt and teased cutting his hair and beard until Shorty and Outtkast ran him off. With the Tag Title situation in question, maybe Shorty and Outtkast have singles gold in mind...at any rate, it was a no-contest but the feud is far from over.
Upcoming:
-Saturday 6/21: SICW in East Carondelet(Ted DiBiase); NWA:CSCW in Fort Leonard Wood
-Saturday 6/28: Dynamo in Glen Carbon; WLW in Troy, MO
Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.
