WWE Smackdown

-Commentators:  Mauro Ranallo & Jerry Lawler (with Byron Saxton & Renee Young on location from WrestleMania Axxess).
-A.J. Styles d. Heath Slater(w/ Curtis Axel, Bo Dallas, & Adam Rose) with the springboard forearm (4:48).
-D-Von Dudley(w/ Buh-Buh Ray Dudley) d. Jey Uso(w/ Jimmy Uso) after the R.D.S.(spinebuster, named after Ron "Damn" Simmons) (4:18).
-Dean Ambrose d. Erick Rowan(w/ Bray Wyatt & Braun Strowman) via Dirty Deeds v2.0(double-underhook DDT) (10:06 aired).

Lucha Underground Season 2 Episode 10

-Commentators:  Matt Striker & Vampiro.
-With promoter Dario Cueto back in charge, the guest bands are a weekly feature again and Dario himself opened the show.  He announced a trios tournament and then pondered who would be the first challenger to Matanza Cueto's Heavyweight Title...but he was quickly interrupted by Pentagon Jr.  Pentagon declared that Matanza only won because he wasn't in the match...but Dario speculated that Pentagon didn't deserve to be in the match.  Pentagon threw Dario down to the mat and threatened to break his arm until Dario agreed to his demand.
-The Crew(Cortez Castro & Mr. Cisco) d. Johnny Mundo & Taya Valkyrie; Brian Cage ran off Mundo, leading to Castro pinning Taya after the Psycho Realm(Flapjack-into-Codebreaker) (4:41).
-Elsewhere:  Marty "The Moth" Martinez explained that a moth tribe once ruled the Aztec empire.  He said that the tribe's greatest warrior was Mariposa, who destroyed enemies of his tribe when they coveted their gold.  Now, the Mariposa mask has been passed down to his sister and the moth tribe will rule again.
-Backstage:  Dario settled into his old office...despite Black Lotus standing guard at the door, Catrina Perez materialized in the room.  Catrina declared that death would come for the title once again...but Dario noted that he gave The Disciples Of Death their Trios TItle rematch tonight in an act of good faith.  Catrina said that she would reclaim the temple in due time...
-Son Of Havoc, Angélico, & Ivelisse Velez d. The Disciples Of Death(Barrio Negro, El Siniestro De La Muerte, & Trece)(w/ Catrina Perez) in an elimination tag match to retain the Trios Titles.  Eliminations:  Catrina distracted Ivelisse and Negro kicked her in the head from the ring apron, allowing Siniestro to pin her (2:37).  Angélico evened the score by pinning Trece after the Fall Of The Angels(turnbuckle Razor's Edge) (4:46).  Siniestro eliminated Angélico after a double-kneedrop to the back of a bent-over Angélico (6:34).  Havoc eliminated Negro after a springboard double-stomp to the back of Siniestro, from which he jumped into another double-stomp to the back of Negro and then followed up with a standing moonsault for the three-count (7:54).  Havoc got the final win over Siniestro with the shooting star press after Ivelisse took out Catrina with a roundhouse kick to the head (9:27).
-Backstage in Dario's office:  The promoter met with Rey Misterio Jr....Rey said he was there because of Dragon Azteca.  Dario claimed to know nothing about the senior Azteca's demise and said that Matanza had nothing to do with it (that part was true enough; it was Black Lotus who choked him out).  Dario said he would leave the past behind if Rey and Azteca Jr. continued to compete in his temple...and they toasted the truce with a drink.
-Mariposa(w/ Marty "The Moth" Martinez) d. Sexy Star(w/ Willie Mack) after the Butterfly Effect(Vertebreaker) (1:26).
-Matanza Cueto(w/ Dario Cueto) d. Pentagon Jr. with the Wrath Of The Gods(rewind powerslam) to retain the Heavyweight Title (4:00).  Vampiro left the broadcast table to check on Pentagon, but Matanza kicked him in the head and then powerbombed Pentagon through the broadcast table.  Pentagon left the temple on a stretcher with Vampiro riding with him in the ambulance.

-Commentators:  Brian Thompson, Leland Race, & Mo Romero Kennedy.
-Tag Team Champions Elite Aggression(Superstar Steve Fender & "The King Of Crossfit" Mark Sterling, subbing for the injured Dangerous Derek McQuinn) d. Roy Lewis & Air Raid(non-title); Sterling pinned Lewis after Fender superkicked Lewis into Sterling's German suplex (8:35).  Heavyweight Champion Trevor Murdoch congratulated the champs on their win...this led to a confrontation with Leland Race and Jayden Fenix.  A tag match was set up for later in the night; Murdoch was so confident that he could beat Race & Fenix on his own that he agreed to team up with Air Raid.  It was set up that Leland would get his title rematch with Murdoch and The Black Hand Warriors would get their Tag Title rematch with Elite Aggression if Race & Fenix won.
-Leland Race & Jayden Fenix d. Heavyweight Champion Trevor Murdoch & Air Raid(w/ Tag Team Champions Steve Fender & Mark Sterling).  "Air Raid" unmasked to reveal that he was really Michael Magnuson and hit a Codebreaker on Murdoch, leading to Race pinning Murdoch with a small package (9:00).  Dave DeLorean joined Black Hand Warriors Magnuson & Fenix in the ring to celebrate with Leland Race.

-Apollo Crews d. Alex Riley with the delayed Blue Thunder Bomb (1:57).  Afterwards, Elias Samson came out to address Crews in song.
-Backstage:  Baron Corbin claimed that Austin Aries hadn't set foot in NXT since he "punked him out" during his debut appearance.  Once he's done with him, Aries can go back to showing his "fighting spirit" to crowds of fifty and sharing merchandise tables with Virgil.
-Earlier today:  Sami Zayn said that he has a big weekend ahead at WrestleMania, but he's not looking past his match with Shinsuke Nakamura at Takeover.  He knows Nakamura will be looking for a great first impression, but he won't be a mere stepping stone for him.
-Samoa Joe d. Bull Dempsey with the Kokita Clutch (1:31).  Joe refused to release the hold, causing General Manager S. William Regal to bring out extra referees and wrestlers to restore order.  Joe fought off the wrestlers and locked Bull in the hold again...Finn Bálor finally made the save, triggering a brawl that went past the guardrail until Joe threw Bálor over the broadcast table into the commentators!  Bálor dove off the table onto Joe and the two continued to fight until referees and wrestlers finally separated them.

Comedy Parts 665-6: The Devil Made Me Do Comedy

Location:  Helium Comedy Club(garage)
Emcee:  Rusty Hughes
After:  Ron Finger
Before:  Brian McDowell

Location:  Helium Comedy Club
Emcee:  Tina Dybal
After:  Patrick Trowbridge
Before:  Brady Septillion

Always cool to perform at Helium...I tried to get there early enough to perform on the "bucket show" workshop beforehand and just barely made the cut near the end of it.  I worked on a couple of things during that set, then focused on stronger material during the main show.  The audience was configured oddly with very few people sitting in the immediate vicinity of the stage, so I started with a joke about how "fifty feet means fifty feet"...har har.  I finally got out the full version of a newer bit that I've been writing...it'll get smoother in time, I'm sure.  I don't know if it was the best time to try newer material, but that was the set I did on this night.

Dynamo Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Dynamo Pro Wrestling show at the Douglas Club Incorporated in Wood River, Illinois.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

It was another weekend with two choices for independent wrestling shows, as Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling had their monthly event in East Carondelet.  I am the type that wants to see a bit of everything, so it's a tough decision when there's something worthwhile at most of the area shows.  I can catch up on SICW goings-on via Wrestling Explosion, at any rate...it looked like a lot of new faces made their debuts at their show.  As it stands right now, I am planning to attend the next East Carondelet event with Terry Funk in the house.

As has been tradition with the Wood River shows, several of the bigger guns were elsewhere for the night.  Heavyweight Champion Jake Dirden was not in the house and Ricky Cruz was at New Breed Wrestling in Eldon.  Also, Tag Champs High Level Enterprise(Jack Gamble & Jon Webb) were not in attendance.  The nice thing about the addition of the D-1 Championship is that it can be used to main-event shows when the other titleholders are absent.  Dynamo has built a really good audience in Wood River over the past several months and I've always enjoyed shows in this particular venue.

Your ring announcers were Chris Roedel and Luke Roberts; your referee was Patrick Hook.

Mike Outlaw vs. C.J. Shine:  This was a battle of fan favorites, but C.J. had a few vocal supporters in the audience and Outlaw subtlely went into a more aggressive style as a result.  In fact, Outlaw exchanged a few words with C.J.'s mother in the audience!  Shine had a good showing and has been making progress in recent months, especially in terms of showing more personality and enthusiasm in the ring.  Outlaw won a competitive match with the Mafia Kick in 8:43 and they shook hands afterwards; Outlaw also apologized to C.J.'s mom.

Paco Gonzalez vs. Brandon Espinosa:  Espy had a full night as he wrestled a tag match at SICW later in the evening; he was obviously in a hurry as he attacked Paco from behind before the opening bell could even ring.  He should probably be more careful with his trash-talking as he used some colorful language in front of a more family-based audience...whoops.  Espy reminds me a lot of Dingo in the sense that he's always evolving and working on his game; an Espinosa match from a year or so ago isn't the same match as a match he would have nowdays.  Paco's been traveling quite a bit in recent times, which can only be good for his experience level at this early stage in his game; my only recommendation would be to save the Cubs cap for when he's working as a rulebreaker in the St. Louis area.  Espy went after the arm early and often, building up to the cross-armbreaker...Paco got a few good near-falls out of his rally, but Espy grabbed him in his finishing hold out of nowhere to get the tapout in 9:18.

"The Valedictorian" Keon Option & Justin D'Air vs. The Viking War Party("American Viking" Alexandre Rudolph & "Littlest Viking" Jake Parnell):  This was an interesting matchup with the more experienced Viking duo against the up-and-coming Option & D'Air.  Similar to Outlaw's traditional handout of his bandanna to a ringside fan, Option gave out graduation caps...always appreciate fan interaction like that, but then Bret Hart was one of my first favorites and he gave out the sunglasses.  The match got a lot of time and I think the teams worked pretty well together.  Guys survived moves that would have ended a lot of other matches, but Option & D'Air pulled out the upset win after Option hit an Olympic Slam on Parnell followed by a swanton bomb by D'Air for the three-count in 13:04.

Adam Rich vs. Shane Fury:  Fury was substituting for Jayden Fenix (who was originally announced as facing Rich).  Rich hadn't competed for Dynamo in several years since being a part of the First United Church Of Karrington...his last appearance was a table match loss with Steven Kennedy against then-Tag Champs The Bumrush Brothers(Shorty Biggs & Outtkast).  I hadn't seen Fury in quite a while; he and Chris Logan had competed for the NWA Central States Championship Wrestling group a few times, but they had been regulars with Metro East Championship Wrestling prior to that.  Fury wanted to show off his skill in the art of pushups, but Rich quickly proved to be the better of the two in that department and Fury gave him a cheapshot in mid-pushup.  These guys had a solid matchup which could have realistically gone either way...Rich won with his low Pedigree(Matter Of Time?) in 9:27.

Intermission~!  Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm): One root beer and a bag of chips.

"The Millenial" Danny Adams vs. The Snitch(w/ Sophie Darling):  I feel like I haven't seen a whole lot of what Snitch is capable of doing.  That's the weird dichotomy of work as a rulebreaker:  Your job isn't looking good, but making the opponent look good and cheating your way into an advantage.  Snitch pulled Sophie in the way of an Adams baseball slide in the early going, then attacked Adams from behind when he checked on the fallen manager.  Sophie was down on the floor for several minutes after that hit.  Adams, like fellow Michael Elgin trainee Paco, has become relatively well-traveled in his short career and he's come a long way in the past two years.  The finish saw Sophie recover from the baseball slide just in time to cause a distraction, allowing Snitch to deliver a low blow while the referee's back was turned.  With that, Snitch rolled up Adams for the cheap pin in 8:45.

"The Pride Of Peoria" Eric Allen, Brandon Aarons, & "The Shogun" Chris Logan vs. The Professionals(Shawn Santel & Mauler McDarby) & ?:  Allen's in-ring career had been cut short by nagging injuries; while he had a few matches in the past several years for NWA Central States, he was never the same after being forced to forfeit the MECW Heavyweight Title due to his medical issues.  He donned the striped shirt to officiate on a few occasions, but the bad blood between himself and the Professionals surfaced at recent Wood River events.  That led to this match as Allen recruited longtime MECW ally Logan and rival-turned-friend Aarons for his side.  For their part, Santel & McDarby kept their partner's identity under wraps; the partner even made his way to the ring under a mask and nondescript casual attire to keep his identity a secret.  Both Allen and McDarby put their wrestling careers on the line, though it seemed to be set up as a one-shot return for Allen to settle the issue.

Allen worked a smart match as he didn't have to do a lot of heavy lifting in a six-man tag like this.  The masked man worked a nondistinct style for the most part so that fans wouldn't guess his identity; I was racking my brain to figure out who from MECW's past would fit into the role.  McDarby brought the old MECW Title belt with him(as he had at the previous Wood River event) to further raise Allen's ire.  At one point, the masked man did a rope-handspring into a leg lariat and I finally realized who it was, but it would be a few more minutes before his identity would be revealed.  The Professionals trio isolated Aarons for a while, then Logan...but Allen finally got in to clean house, delivering Stone Cold Stunners on both Professionals.  When he went for the move on the masked man, his opponent slipped away but lost his hood in the process...revealing "Young & Dangerous" Evan Morris, a man who had begun his wrestling career in that Wood River venue!

Allen and company were shocked by the reveal, but EA took out Morris with one more Stunner in short order.  Allen hit his corkscrew snapmare driver on McDarby but Santel broke up the pin attempt.  Undaunted, Allen got McDarby in a Boston crab but Morris distracted the referee while Santel hit Allen from behind with the MECW Title belt.  McDarby recovered enough to lock Allen in a Sharpshooter...Allen tried to hold on, but was risking permanent injury and finally tapped out in 20:47!

The Professionals and Morris took their leave, though they forgot to bring the MECW belt with them as they left.  Aarons and Logan helped Allen to his feet and he acknowledged the fans who were there to see his last match...I can remember him getting his start in Gateway Championship Wrestling in 2006 and competing all over the Midwest in the subsequent years.  He had a good run as a multi-time MECW Heavyweight Champion and also had some standout matches in Independent Hardcore Wrestling as well.  One of his final matches was an upset win over Michael Elgin, leading to a series of post-match powerbombs that nearly put him on the shelf for good.  While it's never fun to see the end of a wrestling career(especially when injuries are the determining factor), it was good to see Allen essentially go out on his own terms...he got a great sendoff from the fans in attendance in Wood River!

Outtkast vs. Jayson Khaos for the D-1 Title:  This had a hard time following the six-man tag, but I suspect they wanted to have a fan favorite win to close the show.  The absence of Khaos' manager C.J. McManus probably didn't help...the match was good but probably could have been better than it was, in my dumb fan opinion.  It came down to a finisher-countering exchange until Outtkast went back into the archives, dusting off the Lost Cause(fireman's-carry spinebuster) for the win in 10:31.  WOO~!

With Drew Abbenhaus ring-announcing at SICW and Ben Simon also at that show, I figured that the event would be over by the time I got there if I had left right away...I hung out with some of the wrestlers and fans in the bar area afterwards.  When I got home, I realized that the house was strangely warm...because I had forgotten to turn off the oven after baking a pizza for dinner.  Ak...thankfully the warmth was the worst thing that occurred as a result.

Third week in a row of hosting the contest show?  Sure, why not...I could use the exercise (to say nothing of the compensation).  I haven't been focused so much on new material as I have been focused on figuring out how to organize a longer set...it's still a work in progress, but if I'm going to feature any time soon, I need to be able to do that.  Congrats to the four finalists from tonight:  Andrew Frank, Wayne Wiskow, Andrew Hagan, and Nathan Orton!

As Evans was entering, Rey forced Cuerno to tap out to a cross-armbreaker (8:15 aired).

#20 Mil Muertes(w/ Catrina Perez)
Pentagon Jr. attacked Mil with a chair before he could enter the ring, then threw Muertes into the ring for Rey's frog splash.  That allowed Rey and Puma to dogpile him for the elimination (24:28 aired).  The countdown clock comes up, even though this was supposed to be a twenty-wrestler match...and promoter Dario Cueto makes his return to the Temple!  Since he IS the boss, he announces that the match has one more entrant...
#21 Matanza Cueto
Matanza pinned Fenix with a rewind powerslam (27:08 aired), guaranteeing a title change.  Matanza shrugged off a Stone Cold Stunner by Mack and German suplexed him for a three-count (27:28 aired).  Aero Star tried his hand but Matanza clubbed him out of the air, then pinned him with another German suplex (27:46 aired).  Texano tried to choke Matanza down with his bullrope and was thrown off, then tried a rana only to get dropped with a sitout powerbomb for the elimination (28:11 aired).  Matanza broke the guardrail where Ryan was handcuffed to get him into the ring, then took him out after a chain of three gutwrench suplexes (29:14 aired).  Chavo threw Azteca to the wolves, err, wolf...Azteca got in a few moves, but couldn't knock the monster off his feet and Matanza pinned him after a spinning chokeslam (30:28 aired).  Chavo tried to cut a deal with Dario, but Dario gave the throat-slash motion behind his back...Matanza mowed him down with one huge clothesline and pinned him after a standing shooting star press(!) (31:08 aired).  Rey and Puma finally opt against the black-ninja style of attacking one at a time, but Matanza throws Rey out of the ring and overpowers Puma before pinning him with a deadlift German suplex (32:17 aired).  That left Rey and Matanza as the final two; Rey staggered the monster with an enzuigiri and hit the 619 on the second attempt, but Matanza caught him in mid-air as he jumped off the top rope to finish him with the rewind powerslam (34:50 aired).  Your NEWWWWW Lucha Underground Heavyweight Champion after nine straight eliminations is Matanza Cueto!

WLW Special Comment

Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's World League Wrestling show at the Race Wrestling Arena in Troy, Missouri.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm biased.  Deal with it.

I hadn't been to WLW since last August's Night Of Champions event; matches from that show were featured on the first few episodes of their new YouTube show.  It's a matter of simple geography; their closest venue is an hour drive from me, so I tend to choose an option that's closer to home if there's another show on the same night.

It was a long day as I had been to a show at Hey Guys Comedy the night before, woke up early for a five-hour work shift, and then went straight to the grocery store from there.  I barely had time to walk the dogs and eat some leftover pizza casserole before I was back out the door to drive to the show.  I was overly amused by the fact that the WLW training center featured the sign "Harley Parking Only - Violators Will Be Crushed".  (...see, since it means Harley RACE...)  It's still surreal to see the man himself in the front office, especially since he seems to recognize me from attending previous WLW shows.  (Stupid hat.)  I manned the Missouri Wrestling Revival merchandise table for the night as Brian Kelley took photos at ringside, so I was occupied for most of the night.

Since I was last there, Trevor Murdoch captured the Heavyweight Title from Leland Race under controversial circumstances as Steve Fender interfered to cause the title change.  New General Manager Matt Murphy had made the questionable decision to book Race for two title defenses in the same night; one has to wonder about Murphy's loyalties, as he was once closely associated with Fender and Derek McQuinn in the Gold Exchange stable.  (In fact, Murphy & Fender were WLW's first Tag Team Champions.)  That's just idle speculation on my part, of course...but you never know.

Your ring announcer was Dan Gier; your referee was Richard White.

Justin D'Air vs. Mike Outlaw, Junior Heavyweight Title Tournament:  WLW hadn't created a new championship since 2001(!) when the Tag Team Titles were started.  At the previous show, Jon Webb defeated Danny Adams and Ace Hawkins pinned Kyle Roberts to advance in the tournament; Webb vs. Hawkins will be one semifinal and this night's matches would determine the other semifinal.  This was the first meeting between these two in the St. Louis area, though they had faced each other in other parts of the country.

Outlaw was oddly reserved in his entrance and then went into full rulebreaker mode once the bell rang...it was the first time I had seen him in that role in person.  Notably, Outlaw turned on D'Air after they lost the High Risk Wrestling Tag Team Titles to Logan & Sterling Riegel, so there was some backstory even if it was on the other side of Missouri.  D'Air looked really good with several impressive aerial moves, including a ropewalk into a plancha off the top rope...these two work really well together.  D'Air rallied and went for the 450 Splash, but Outlaw raised his knees to block the move and rolled up D'Air with his feet on the ropes for the cheap pin in 11:51.  Afterwards, Outlaw told the ringside fans that it was just what "outlaws" do...

Jon Webb vs. Karim Brigante(w/ Miss Monica Passeri):  Good to see Brigante and Monica again...they had gone back to Italy for a little while, but recently returned to the Harley Race Dojo.  They're both very cool people from my brief experiences with meeting them in person.  Webb is an odds-on favorite in the Jr. Heavyweight Title tournament and has been expanding his arsenal in recent months; he pulled out an impressive rana counter to a vertical suplex in the match with Leland Race that just aired on their YouTube show.  These guys have a really solid matchup; Monica did a fine job of jawing with the fans and interfering when the referee's back was turned.  She has wrestled in Italy(saw a few clips on YouTube) but I don't think she's competed in the States yet; I can only imagine the Missouri licensing headaches.  Monica's interference prevented a few chances for Webb to close things out, but it finally backfired as Webb knocked Karim into his valet, knocking her off the apron.  A few exchanges later, Webb finished with a superkick and Sliced Bread #2 in 8:39...woo.

Trevor Murdoch(w/ Tag Team Champions Steve Fender & Mark Sterling) vs. Roy Lewis for the Heavyweight Title:  Per General Manager Matt Murphy, Murdoch has contractual freedom to hand-pick his challengers...notably, former champion Leland Race did not wrestle on this show(though I'm pretty sure I saw him in attendance).  Murdoch gave a big verbal buildup for his challenger (he's WLW's first Eagle Scout!), but it was obvious that he had picked the inexperienced Lewis with the expectation of an easy night.  Lewis was psyched just to get the opportunity to be in the ring with the former WWE Tag Team Champion, but the enthusiasm went away in a hurry as he took a serious beating.  The "welcome to wrestling, kid" initiation is continuing for Lewis, obviously.  The fans chanted "We Want Leland", prompting Murdoch to ask "What about Roy?"...heh.  Lewis got a late rally, but Murdoch rolled through a cross-bodyblock for the win in 5:36...I think he was in the ropes and may have had a handful of tights as well, but I had trouble seeing from my vantage point.  The post-match beatdown ensued...all three Black Hand Warriors ran in to brawl with Murdoch and company, but they got the worst of the exchange and were a bit dinged up heading into their matches later in the night.

Intermission~!  Due to my stomach woes, I only had a bottle of water on this night.  Apologies to Ben Simon for this uneventful edition of the Concession Count(tm).

"Miss Natural" Heather Patera vs. Stacey O'Brien vs. Lucy Mendez for the Women's Title:  There was an altercation at the previous show that set up this match.  Miss Natural and Stacey had battled for the past year or so, but Lucy is also a former WLW Women's Champion and started her wrestling career with this promotion.  In contrast to Dynamo Pro's alignments, Miss Natural was the rulebreaker in this match while both challengers were fan favorites.  As noted earlier, Missouri licensing is a particularly big headache for female wrestlers; I remember hearing at one point that a negative pregnancy test had to be submitted for every show.  Unfortunately, that makes the female talent pool extremely limited, especially since WLW is the only area promotion with a women's championship.  (MMWA's title was quietly retired several years ago.)

I was honestly disappointed that this match didn't get more time; the match was good for what it was, but I think they're capable of doing even better.  Lucy and Stacey started fighting before Miss Natural was even introduced, kick-starting the bout as the champion bided her time and let the challengers fight it out.  There were some really good triple threat exchanges, including the obligatory Tower Of Doom spot with Miss Natural powerbombing Stacey as she superplexed Lucy.  The finish saw Stacey hit the backcracker on Lucy, only for Miss Natural to toss Stacey out of the ring and steal the pin on Lucy in 6:15.  When you see a lot of three-way matches, that finish becomes a bit cliched...just one idiot fan's view, as usual.

Jayden Fenix vs. "The Yoga Monster" Mike Sydal, Junior Heavyweight Title Tournament:  The winner would move on to face Mike Outlaw in the semifinals.  With Sydal in rulebreaking mode for the night, the winner seemed obvious; the Black Hand Warriors have built a pretty strong fanbase in Troy since even before their official turn to fan favoritism.  There were a few scattered "Derek Jeter" chants for Fenix but they didn't last.  I haven't seen Sydal in the heel role as often in recent years, but he's very effective at it as he focused his attack on the arm.  Sydal never had an opportunity to go for the Yogasault; Fenix won with a flying knee strike(a la Mr. Brie Bella) in 10:41.

Intermission numero dos~!  Suffice it to say that I may have left that pizza casserole in the fridge for a bit longer than I should have...urgh.

They played a video on the TV monitors in the building to announce the special guest for the May 14th show:  Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat!  Very cool...will need to check the schedule and see if I'm free for that.

Elite Aggression(Superstar Steve Fender & "The Fittest Wrestler On Earth" Mark Sterling)(w/ Trevor Murdoch) vs. The Black Hand Warriors(Michael Magnuson & Dave DeLorean) for the Tag Team Titles:  This feud stemmed from Fender and Dangerous Derek McQuinn cashing in Fender's Harley Race Invitational Tournament opportunity after DeLorean and Jayden Fenix had won a four-team tournament for the vacant tag titles; Fender & McQuinn defeated the worn-down champions for the belts immediately after the tourney final.  McQuinn suffered a recent injury and Sterling was allowed to substitute as Fender's tag partner; I had honestly forgotten that Fender & Sterling had been Tag Champs in their own right in the past.  Magnuson only recently returned to action, reuniting the original Black Hand Warriors tandem for this grudge match.

The match was clearly going long as they did the slow build, starting with a lot of quick tags on the Warriors' side.  While Fender & Sterling would seem to be the less-experienced duo, they had teamed in the past so their own continuity was on point as well.  The champs were able to isolate DeLorean(disposing of his ever-present T-shirt) and then Magnuson, but the challengers finally regained control and cleaned house.  They were able to get Sterling out of the game long enough for Magnuson to hit a Codebreaker on Fender, followed by DeLorean dropping Fender with a superkick and getting the pin in 25:12!  We have NEWWWWW Tag Team Champions...Jayden Fenix came out to celebrate with his partners...I don't know where he was DURING the match with Murdoch out at ringside, but oh well.

Post-show:  Touched base with a few people who I don't see as often as others, particularly Sterling and Sydal.  With a lot of the usual crew elsewhere for the night, it was just myself and Brian Kelley who made the late-night food run to Steak 'N' Shake in Wentzville.  I had hoped to take it easy for the night, but since I had coupons in my car, I had the bacon-lovers' double steakburger with cheese plus fries.  I did opt for water instead of soda, if nothing else.

Next Saturday will have two shows in the area:  Dynamo Pro Wrestling in Wood River and Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in East Carondelet.  Either event is a good option for indie rasslin fans, so go wherever your preferences lead you.  At the end of the day, I'm one fan and I only speak for myself; go to shows and judge for yourself.

That's my special comment for this, the eleventh wrestling show I've attended in the year 2016.  Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

Comedy Part 663: Hey Guys, Hosting The Contest Again

Location: Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee: Me
Lineup: Max Price, Rex & Echo Selix, Chris Cyr, Josh Funneman, Shon Don, Andrew Topping, Joe "The Animal" Lancey, Libbie "Claudette" Higgins, Tree Sanchez, Jon Maddy

I hosted the contest for the second week in a row, this time for the semifinalists.  After the first round's window of 4-6 minutes, this round had a time frame of 6-8 minutes.  The show kept me hopping as I was both the emcee and the timekeeper, jotting down everyone's times in between the introductions.  I had a few good quips between comedians and had a really good set at the end of the show...so I guess the luck of the Irish was with me on St. Patrick's Day.  Congrats to the four finalists:  Andrew Topping, Shon Don, Chris Cyr, and Jon Maddy!

Lucha Underground Season 2 Episode 8

-Commentators:  Matt Striker & Vampiro.
-Backstage:  Gift Of The Gods Champion Fenix prepared for his main event...Catrina Perez paid him a visit, saying that she desired his "powers" to "give (her) life again".  She wondered if she made the wrong choice by siding with Mil Muertes over Fenix...then kissed him before warning him that Mil would destroy him for good.  After that, he would "bring (her) back from the dead".
-Son Of Havoc, Angélico, & Ivelisse Velez d. The Disciples Of Death(Barrio Negro, El Siniestro De La Muerte, & Trece)(w/ Catrina Perez) in a titles-vs.-careers match to win the Trios Titles; Angélico pinned Siniestro after Havoc's shooting star press (4:56).
-Backstage:  Prince Puma crossed paths with old rival Johnny Mundo...they were both preparing for Aztec Warfare in a week's time.  Mundo's arrogance led to Puma taking out his frustration on a defenseless punching bag.
-Elsewhere:  Rey Misterio Jr. met with Dragon Azteca Jr....Rey said their training is complete and they have received invitations to Aztec Warfare.
-El Texano Jr. d. Chavo Guerrero Jr.(w/ Cortez Castro & Mr. Cisco) in a bullrope match via sitout powerbomb (6:04); The Crew teased a run-in after the opening bell, but instead they walked away from the ring area.
-Backstage:  Heavyweight Champion Mil Muertes beat up The Disciples Of Death over their loss of the Trios Titles; Siniestro attempted to strike back, but Mil throttled him until Catrina called for mercy.
-Elsewhere:  Dario Cueto(w/ Black Lotus) declared that Matanza was ready to return to The Temple...and we got our first official look at the masked monster, stained with the blood of his victims.
-Gift Of The Gods Champion Fenix d. Mil Muertes(w/ Catrina Perez) to win the Heavyweight Title.  Each man ripped the other's mask and Fenix was busted open after Mil countered a suicide dive with a chair to the head; Muertes was bloodied after Fenix turned the chair against him.  Mil hit a top-rope Flatliner, but made the mistake of going for one more Flatliner and Fenix countered by victory-rolling Mil into a bridging pin for the win (13:39).
-After the match, Catrina announced that Fenix would defend the title in next week's Aztec Warfare(originally scheduled to be for a title shot).  To twist the knife further, she made Fenix #1 and Mil Muertes #20(the same spots as last year).  Despite that ruling, the new champion celebrated with the fans to close the show.

William Regal.  Regal announced that Zayn would get a special opponent at Takeover and played a video message from that opponent:  Shinsuke Nakamura!

Comedy Part 662: My Own Biggest Critic

Location: Westport Funny Bone
Emcee: Spencer Tegtmeyer
After: Andrew Frank
Before: Joe Murray

It was a long show with several first-timers getting on stage.  Some of them were funny and some of them...thought they were funny.  (Hey, we all think we're funny in the beginning.)  I didn't do nearly as much new material as I had wanted to do, but I worked on a few things(brown van, new Valentine's Day stuff).  Of course, the most praise I'll usually give myself is "I did all right", so...on to whenever my next performance will be.
