Lucha Underground Season 2 Episode 23
-Commentators: Matt Striker & Vampiro.
-Added to Ultima Lucha II: Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans, & P.J. Black defend the Trios Titles against Fenix, Drago, & Aero Star.
-King Cuerno d. Mil Muertes(w/ Catrina Perez); the referee was knocked down when Cuerno hit a suicide dive on Mil. That allowed the two to trade chair attacks, then Cuerno sidestepped a spear and Mil hit the chair in the corner head-first...Cuerno rolled up Mil with feet on the ropes for the tainted win (4:34).
-Backstage: Promoter Dario Cueto met with Ivelisse Velez and Taya Valkyrie in his office. The rivalry had to be settled and it would happen at Ultima Lucha II. Ivelisse crossed paths with Catrina in the hallway as she left and Ivelisse reminded her that she wasn't done with her. Catrina told Dario that Mil Muertes wanted a rematch with Cuerno...Dario felt that Catrina was in no position to make demands, but Catrina demanded a "death match" to settle the issue. Dario liked it when Catrina talked violence to him, so he approved the match.
-Prince Puma d. Dragon Azteca Jr.(w/ Rey Misterio Jr.) with the 630 Splash (8:46). Rey and Puma traded some tense words after the match.
-Promoter Dario Cueto addressed Brian Cage, Willie Mack, Son Of Havoc, and El Texano Jr. in the ring...he wanted them to be a part of Ultima Lucha II. To kick off the event on next week's show, the four would be in a "Unique Opportunity Tournament"...he encouraged the entrants to start early, touching off a four-way brawl.
-Trios Champion Johnny Mundo(w/ Taya Valkyrie) d. Fenix after hitting him with his title belt behind the referee's back (7:48). Trios Co-Champions Jack Evans & P.J. Black celebrated the win with Mundo & Taya and put the boots to Fenix until Drago, Aero Star, and finally Ivelisse Velez made the save.

Dawson & Wilder made their entrance, saying their called the shots...but General Manager S. William Regal said that he's the one in charge. Ciampa & Gargano are in line for a title shot, but the Tag Title rematch comes first...it'll happen next week and it'll be best-of-three-falls. As Ciampa & Gargano left the ring, The Authors Of Pain(Sunny Dhinsa & Gzim Selmani) attacked Jordan & Gable from behind...they fought off Ciampa & Gargano when they tried to help, giving Jordan the opening for a huge overhead suplex on Dhinsa! However, Selmani mowed down Jordan with a clothesline, then the Authors laid out Jordan and Gable with their Russian legsweep/lariat combo. Manager Paul Ellering walked out to observe the carnage of his new team...

NJPW G1 Climax 26
For the uninitiated: The G1 Climax is an annual round-robin-style tournament in New Japan Pro Wrestling that takes place over the summer. Two blocks of competitors face each other with the point leaders squaring off the finals. The winner earns the right to challenge for the IWGP Heavyweight Title at Wrestle Kingdom(New Japan's biggest show of the year) in January. Last year's G1 was the first one I followed to any degree and I only recently got around to watching the matches from that tournament.
This year's tournament has a similar field to last year's, though the roster was obviously changed due to five major defections to WWE/NXT: A.J. Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Karl Anderson, Luke/Doc Gallows, and Kota Ibushi. Also dropping out of last year's field are Hiroyoshi Tenzan(who had won the tournament on three previous occasions) and Yujiro Takahashi. Filling those spots are former Intercontinental Champion Kenny Omega, former Tag Champ Tama Tonga, CHAOS underling Yoshi-Hashi, Seiya Senada and Takaaki "EVIL" Watanabe of Tetsuya Naito's Los Ingobernables, and Naomichi Marufuji and Katsuhiko Nakajima from Pro Wrestling NOAH.
Block A: Togi Makabe, Satoshi Kojima, Tomohiro Ishii, Hirooki Goto, Bad Luck Fale, Tama Tonga, Seiya Senada, Naomichi Marufuji, IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi
Block B: NEVER Openweight Champion Katsuyori Shibata, Yuji Nagata, Tomoaki Honma, IWGP Intercontinental Champion Michael Elgin, Toru Yano, Tetsuya Naito, Takaaki "EVIL" Watanabe, Kenny Omega, Yoshi-Hashi, Katsuhiko Nakajima
The full match schedule hasn't been released yet, but several key matches have been announced:
7/18: Tanahashi vs. Senada, Okada vs. Marufuji.
7/22: Nagata vs. Naito, Shibata vs. Honma
7/23: Tanahashi vs. Makabe, Okada vs. Senada
7/24: Shibata vs. Nakajima, Honma vs. Yoshi-Hashi
7/25: Makabe vs. Senada, Okada vs. Goto
7/27: Naito vs. Yano, Elgin vs. Shibata
7/28: Ishii vs. Marufuji, Goto vs. Senada
7/30: Elgin vs. Omega, Shibata vs. Naito
7/31: Makabe vs. Marufuji, Tanahashi vs. Goto
8/1: Yoshi-Hashi vs. Nakajima, Naito vs. Honma

8/6: Tanahashi vs. Marufuji, Okada vs. Ishii
8/7: Omega vs. Nagata, Naito vs. EVIL
8/8: Ishii vs. Senada, Tanahashi vs. Kojima
8/10: Elgin vs. Honma, Shibata vs. Nagata
8/12: Goto vs. Marufuji, Okada vs. Tanahashi
8/13: Shibata vs. EVIL, Naito vs. Omega
Stories from last year's G1 Climax included:
-Elgin's quest for respect in his first major tour of Japan
-Honma's quest for any wins at all after going winless in the 2014 tourney (he scored one lone win toward the end of last year's G1).
-Nakamura overcoming an early elbow injury to battle his way to the finals.
-Okada's desire to be both the IWGP Heavyweight Champion and the G1 Climax winner (meaning he would hand-pick his Wrestle Kingdom opponent if he remained champion).

Comedy Part 703: Hey Guys, Pinch-Hitting
Location: Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee: Me
Feature: Thaddeus Challis
Headliner: Chili Challis
Went to the club tonight with the expectation of simply watching the show...but Bruce Veach asked if I could host the late show since his scheduled emcee wasn't there. I was cool with that...other than stumbling over Thaddeus' name in his introduction, things went swimmingly. Went to the Friday show as well, so I got to talk to both Chili and Thaddeus quite a bit over the weekend. Also, Al Canal stopped by the Saturday show...hadn't seen him in a little while. Tip to local comedians: Always be prepared to perform in case you're needed! Next up for me is probably the Westport Funny Bone on Tuesday...we shall see. My work vacation ends on Monday...yay?

Comedy Part 702: Hey Guys, We Have Air Conditioning
Location: Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee: Joe "The Animal" Lancey
After: Rex & Echo Selix
Before: Mondo Franco
We had a decent turnout for this show...I threw out some lesser-used bits to see how they went and those didn't go over quite as well. I probably need to write them out, or maybe I just should leave those in the notebook. At any rate, this was my fifth straight evening of comedy performing...think I'll take it a bit easier for the weekend.

-Bayley Rose d. Deonna Purrazzo with the Belly-To-Bayley Hugplex (2:46).
-Backstage: Cathy interviewed Carmella Van Damme about her pursuit of the NXT Women's Title...she was interrupted by Alexa Bliss, setting up a match for next week's show.
-Nia Jax d. Liv Morgan with a powerbomb (2:10).
-Shinsuke Nakamura d. Buddy Murphy after the Kinshasa(flying knee strike) (4:36).
-Oney Lorcan(aka Christopher Girard/Biff Busick) d. Tye Dillinger after a running Buff Blockbuster (5:57).
-Backstage: Cathy Kelley interviewed Austin Aries; he lost to Shinsuke Nakamura at Takeover, but his mission to become champion remains unchanged. "No Way" Jose Valenzuela interrupted, telling Aries to stay positive...Aries didn't seem to take this too well.
-Earlier today: Bayley Rose celebrated the fact that she's been cleared to return to action.
-"No Way" Jose Valenzuela d. Josh Woods with the cobra clutch slam (2:00). Afterwards, Austin Aries made his way to the ring...he said he wouldn't make excuses for his loss(despite his bruised ribs), but Jose may have helped him a bit. Aries admitted that he could learn to have more fun...he was reminded of who he really is and who he needs to be. Jose invited him to dance and Aries surprisingly accepted the offer...they danced on the commentary table, but then Aries stunned Jose with a roaring elbow and beat him down on the arena floor. Aries locked Jose in the Last Chancery on the entrance ramp until referees broke things up.

Comedy Part 701: Keg Kontest
Location: Corner Keg (Highland, IL)
Emcee: Bruce Veach
After: Jeff Tolbert
Before: Hayden Hamilton
My comedy cavalcade continued for the week as I made the trip to Highland for the monthly contest. Joe "The Animal" Lancey usually hosts, but he was otherwise engaged so Bruce handled the emcee duties while Brian McDowell judged and did the show-closing set. I hadn't been to the Highland bar in a while; I had previously performed there for a more standard show, but these have been contests in recent months. I felt like I had a really good set, though I wasn't sure how I would fare in the actual contest portion of the evening; there were several guys I hadn't seen before as well as familiar faces like Wayne Wiskow and Doug Morris. Larry Smith won first place, but I got second and did win some money...so score, first time I'd ever won anything in a comedy contest! (I'm told Amber Klear got third place; not sure how that came about.) At any rate, my busy comedy week continues as I return to Hey Guys Comedy for the weekly open-mic on Thursday night...I may also do Fitz's if I feel up to it.

Comedy Part 700: The 700 Club
Location: Westport Funny Bone
Emcee: Quentin Wilbert
After: Jamie Fritz
Before: Stephon Hightower
Would have been neat to hit the seven-hundred mark precisely on my ten-year anniversary, but I settled for hitting it at the site of my first comedy performance. I nearly whiffed on the signup as I forgot about the earlier start time of 7:30, but thankfully they allowed me to add my name on the signup sheet and I made the list. It was a lively audience and I had a really good set, mixing my newer material with a few established jokes. The last ten years have been an eventful ride...who knows if the comedy thing will turn into anything significant overall, but it's been an interesting life experience and I've met a ton of cool people along the way. Next up: Think I'll check out Joe "The Animal" Lancey's comedy contest tomorrow night at the Corner Keg in Highland...

SICW Special Comment + This Week In Wrestling
Now, as promised, a special comment about Saturday's Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling show at the Community Center in East Carondelet, Illinois.
DISCLAIMER: I'm biased. Deal with it.
The local rasslin schedule continues to be crowded as Saturday also featured a Wrestling Invades America show in Swansea. The fact that the choice for the weekend was a difficult one speaks volumes about the progress that WIA has made in recent years; I will catch up on their goings-on via YouTube in the near future.
The aforementioned crowded wrestling schedule has meant that I haven't been to SICW shows as regularly as I had been. I know that I can keep tabs on the product through Wrestling Explosion, but some things are better experienced in person. Attendance seemed to be lower than usual at this event, but then there was probably going to be a dropoff after last month's big Wrestling At The Chase anniversary show. The fans were into the show and that's really what counts, not one dork's opinion. Heh.
Your ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus; your referees were Denny Thomas, Nick Ridenour, & Terry Riley.
Promoter Herb Simmons started the show by acknowledging the recent passings of Gypsy Joe and Muhammad Ali. Gypsy Joe was a bit before my time, but he had in-ring wars in his later years against such opponents as New Jack and Necro Butcher. Quite a few of the wilder rasslin stories in history involve the name of Gypsy Joe, to say the least. Herb also noted that it was the birthday of the late Bruiser Brody, segueing into the ten-bell salute.
GCS Ballpark is hosting a meet-and-greet with Kurt Angle on Friday, July 1st...there won't be a wrestling show associated with it, but SICW helped to promote the event with some representatives from GCS in attendance.
"Your Canadian Hero" Sean Vincent vs. Britton Tucker: Tucker is not well-liked in East Carondelet; one female fan was particularly irate about Tucker's mere presence and Tucker promised to take her out to Olive Garden after the show. Bwahahaha. They had a solid opener and Vincent appeared to be on the verge of winning with his Mapleleaf Leglock, but "Unstable" Dave Vaughn entered the ring and blatantly attacked TUCKER...thus getting Vincent disqualified in 7:44. Har har. Afterwards, Vincent reaffirmed that Vaughn would not turn him back into a "villain" as he insisted he would...
"The Fury" Jason Vaughn vs. "The Incredible" Matt Kenway (Look At Him): We have two guys in SICW with the last name of Vaughn...cue the MARKET CONFUSION~! Kenway was substituting for Ax Allwardt(Vaughn's scheduled opponent). Vaughn's two young children were in attendance and were VERY vocal in their support of their father. Kenway did a good job in the rulebreaking role and targeted Vaughn's arm, but Vaughn made El Big Comeback and got the figure-four leglock out of nowhere for the submission in 6:08. Good enough for government work, as they way.
Bobby D vs. "Unstable" Dave Vaughn: Vaughn's transition into Heath Ledger Joker continues with the similar hair and the eye makeup. Vaughn controlled most of the matchup, but had trouble putting D away and went for a chair. That brought out Vincent to confiscate the weapon, leading to Bobby D getting the rollup pin on a distracted Vaughn in 5:14. Vaughn didn't seem too upset about the loss, laughing about how Vincent's interference proved that he truly was reverting to his old ways...more on this as it develops.
Intermission~! Official Ben Simon Concession Count(tm): Cheeseburger, two Coca-Colas, and a leftover bag of popcorn that I picked up as a freebie after the show had ended. (Ben was ring-announcing at WIA on this night.)
Flaming Freddie Fury vs. Purple Passion: WHEN EFFEMINATE MASKED GIMMICKS COLLIDE~! I try to be diplomatic in these commentaries...it takes a lot for me to even say "that match wasn't very good". That being said: This was a dumpster fire wrapped in a car wreck surrounded by a trash explosion. It not only made me wish I had been at WIA for the evening, it made me wish I had driven two-plus hours to Litchfield for the return of Rampage Championship Wrestling. It set LGBQT rights back several decades and I felt like issuing a personal apology to the citizens of Orlando. I accept that wrestling, by its very nature, is extremely politically incorrect; note the endless string of evil foreigners and stereotypical gimmicks that exist to this day. However, the usually-forgiving audience in East Carondelet did not care for this at all. I heard several people call out "This isn't wrestling!" At any rate, the two ended up falling into 69 position on the ring apron and both were counted out in a 5:43 match that was about five minutes too long. The two literally left arm-in-arm...I award you negative five stars, may God have mercy on your soul, and let us never speak of this again.
"Dead Sexy" Daniel Gunner vs. Brandon Espinosa(w/ Travis Cook): The MWR Missouri Title is only defended in its namesake state, so Espy didn't have the belt here. Travis started out by loudly complaining about the previous match, asking if Vince Russo had booked it. I'M AGREEING WITH TRAVIS COOK...QUIT THAT. Espinosa followed suit, continuing his mindset that he's above everyone else in the promotion by insulting several members of the locker room...that included his scheduled opponent for the evening. Anything would have looked like Gotch-Hackenschmidt after what preceded this...this was a solid matchup with Gunner doing better than I would have expected. I suspect a small part of Travis' soul dies when he has to extol the virtues of Ring Of Honor as part of Espinosa's resume. At any rate, Espy got the cross-armbreaker out of nowhere for the tapout in 7:18.
Big Jim Hoffarth vs. Bubba Troll(w/ Big Daddy): Hoffarth won last month's Bruiser Brody Memorial Battle Royal and Troll was the last man eliminated, so Troll obviously wanted some payback in this battle of super heavyweights. I jokingly throw around "#ClubbingForearms" at times like this, but it's not like we're gonna see a lucha-style match out of these guys. I'm often told that casual fans would rather see a "fight" than a "wrestling match", at any rate. In a slight surprise, Troll got the win after a splash off the second rope in 8:30...Drew tried to get a word with Hoffarth afterwards, but he wasn't feeling up to an interview after BEING SPLASHED FROM THE SECOND ROPE BY A LARGE OPPONENT. Timing, Drew.
"Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One" Gary Jackson & "Ironman" Ken Kasa vs. "The Icon" Chris Hargas(w/ Travis Cook), "St. Louis Handicap Match": Hargas & Espinosa defeated Kasa in this style of match in May, so Hargas wanted to prove that he could do what Kasa couldn't. The match had a fifteen-minute limit and the tag team would win if the single wrestler couldn't win a decision in that time frame. Kasa wanted to fight on his own and asked Gary to stay outside the ring...so the match was basically a singles bout with Gary doing his beset to thwart interference attempts by Travis Cook. Travis was able to get involved enough that the referee was distracted after Kasa delivered the John Wu Dropkick...at that moment, Jackson chased Travis back to the dressing room area. Kasa locked on a version of the rear naked choke as the time limit ticked down, but Hargas didn't tap out until RIGHT after the closing bell sounded at 15:00. Technically Jackson & Kasa won the match, but Kasa wanted a decisive victory...so the July show will feature a thirty-minute Ironman Match between Kasa and Hargas. Goodie.
Intermission numero dos~! The show was running pretty late at this point and Ben Simon called me during the handicap match about the WIA show being finished.
Johnny Blade vs. "The Tokyo Monster" Kahagas(w/ Travis Cook): I had totally forgotten about Kahagas being on the show. Blade returned to the St. Louis area fairly recently after previously being a regular for both SICW and the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Aliance. At this point in the night, I think people just wanted to get to the main event...Kahagas won with a pumphandle Michinoku Driver in 5:54.
Ron Powers vs. Attila Khan for the Classic Title, Travis Cook Banned From Ringside: The past two months of Wrestling Explosion have attempted to compare this rivalry to Bruiser Brody vs. Abdullah The Butcher, as Powers is a protege of the late Brody and Khan has a similar style to the "Madman From The Sudan". This wasn't a technical classic and wasn't expected to be...Khan played that popular Memphis game of "Where Oh Where Could The Foreign Object Be?" Hey, it ticks off the fans and that's what counts for a rulebreaker. Ron had control when the rulebreakers' locker room essentially emptied on Khan's behalf to cause the DQ in 3:53. It started with Bubba Troll, then continued with Brandon Espinosa, Chris Hargas, and Kahagas with Big Daddy attempting to direct traffic. It took a while for the fan favorites' locker room to get the memo, but finally Ken Kasa and Gary Jackson hit the ring to help. Once they brought chairs into the fray, the rulebreakers backed off...that wrapped up the show.
I honestly wouldn't mind having an easy weekend for a change...there's nothing in the immediate area this coming weekend. If anyone feels like letting me bum a ride to High Risk Wrestling in Warsaw, MO, feel free to drop me a line. I'm getting old, folks...har har.
July looks like this:
-Saturday 7/2: Stride Pro Wrestling in Marion, IL (a bit of a haul, but not much else on 4th Of July weekend...)
-Saturday 7/9: Pro Wrestling Championship Series in Granite City, IL; Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance in St. Louis, MO
-Saturday 7/16: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in Glen Carbon, IL; Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in East Carondelet, IL
-Friday 7/22: Dynamo Pro Wrestling in Collinsville, IL (NatsuCon)
-Saturday 7/23: Pro Wrestling Resurgence in St. Louis, MO (Ready Room)
That's my special comment for this, the twenty-eighth wrestling show I've attended in the year 2016. Good night, good luck, and #yaywrestling.

Comedy Part 699: Decade Of Destruction
Location: Heavy Anchor
Emcee: Chad Wallace
After: Rocco Hogan
Before: Vincent Bryant
My first comedy performance was on June 20th of 2006 at the Westport Funny Bone; Chad Huff was the emcee and I performed after Clayton Champagne. There aren't a whole lot of jokes from that set that I would do today...at least not in their original form. I've been to the Comedy Shipwreck shows when there has been a good audience and when there hasn't...thankfully, this was the first case. I focused on newer material and got an applause break for one particular joke...so to my cousin Jason, "Plan B" is still killing. *ducks thrown objects* Next up is the Westport Funny Bone tomorrow night...if I make the list, it'll be performance #700.

Emcee: Spencer Tegtmeyer

It would be an understatement to say that attendance was low...apparently the NBA Playoffs were a thing tonight. Usual hosts Emily Hickner and Tina Dybal were at Helium for Maria Bamford's show, so Spencer hosted for the evening. I did mostly new material and got a few laughs out of the mostly-local-comics crowd...there you have it. Next up is Heavy Anchor tomorrow night, which will be the ten-year anniversary of my first comedy performance...if I make the list at the Funny Bone on Tuesday, that'll be #700. Woo.

Comedy Part 697: Hey Guys, It's Another Contest
Location: Hey Guys Comedy
Emcee: Me
Lineup: Rex & Echo Selix, Doug Morris, Lucas Hinderliter, Amanda Koltzbach, Joe "The Animal" Lancey, Spencer Tegtmeyer, Jeremy Eastep, Josh Funneman, Josh Moore, Brian McDowell, Tim Loss, Jamie Fritz, Gary Reinhardt
Winner: Doug Morris
The winner of this competition would get a monetary prize and also automatic entry into next February's full-scale contest. I never quite got around to entering the contest myself as Bruce Veach asked me to host the show instead...I was okay with that. Given my recent track record in comedy contests, I don't know how well I would have fared anyway. I had a short set at the end of the show while the audience votes were counted...unfortunately I stumbled over my newer jokes, but I hadn't done them too often before tonight. I haven't gotten out to shows as often recently as I've stayed home on a few recent Tuesdays...will keep you posted about upcoming events.
