Guess I should do this before I get too far behind...
Disappointing news this past week as D.T. Porter(aka "The Future" Donovan Ruddick) was released from WWE. FCW's website switched completely over to an NXT motif and he wasn't on the roster page...Crimefighter confirmed through Future himself that it was a mutual agreement to part ways. I had heard that he had just been cleared to get back to in-ring training...hopefully he'll get another chance once he works off the ring rust.
Dynamo used several different talents this past Friday...several WLW competitors made the trip including Cancun Kid, Jack Gamble, Miss Natural, and the returning Eathon Wright. Also, Chris Logan and Shane Fury(aka Gamertag Fury816) made the trip and it sounds like they made a good impression...cool.
Walsh vs. Stone was a bit slow and disappointing, sorry to say...the non-finish didn't help matters. K.C. Karrington must not watch mainstream wrestling as busting up a contenders' match tends to ALWAYS land a heel champion in a triple threat match(see also C.M. Punk).
The teased face turn for Rudolph paid off as he got into a fight with Greg Jovi and Dice...he came out later to even the odds during Karrington's title defense against Makaze. Rudolph has made good progress in recent months...some "big guys" in wrestling are unfortunately typecast as subpar workers as the mainstream promotions keep giving us guys who are built like tanks and about as mobile and versatile.
Jake Dirden has made a good impression in his first few months of active competition...cool.
Adam Rich vs. Outtkast ended out of nowhere and I legitimately missed the actual finish...I just looked up from a conversation and Rich was getting the pin. Outkast later told me that he was knocked a bit loopy from a knee strike to the head...yeah, that would do it.
Cruz-McNeil was good but somewhat heatless as it was a face vs. face matchup...Cruz showed some heel tendencies, including shoving the ref down after the match(!) before shaking Billy's hand.
Kennedy hasn't been wrestling as often lately...I would consider him one of the most overlooked guys on the local scene right now as a result. He and Shorty have fought each other a whole lot and they'll meet against next month in the Bumrush Brothers' first defense of the Dynamo Tag Titles...
MsChif's injury was a last-minute thing, resulting in the intergender matchup we got. Magic Man actually showed a few wrestling moves in the early going, including a La Majistral cradle(JAPAN~!). Fun matchup and MsChif's involvement means we'll probably see the actual match between MsChif and Miss Natural once MsChif is healed up.
Hard to believe that Makaze was completely retired a few years ago as he's been on a roll in the past few months. Selling is a lost art and his selling in the NWA Missouri Title tourney match with Karrington last year set the stage for his eventual face turn. If a face doesn't sell...how are the fans supposed to have sympathy for him? If a heel doesn't sell...how are the fans supposed to believe he's in any danger of losing?
Slight nod to history as Makaze and Sharona were rivals several years ago...leading to the question of whether Sharona had ulterior motives for restarting the match. However, the two have a common enemy these days and Sharona simply made the fair decision(K.C. did get his foot on the bottom rope during the pin). The post-match situation sent the fans home happy as Karrington was run out of the building by his future challengers...and Sharona made it up to Makaze by adding him to next month's title match. Guess that means Stone's heel turn was a solo job and not a defection to Karrington's group...Trent still Wants Da Belt.
Onward to South Broadway(I REALLY need to avoid that construction on the Poplar Street Bridge)...
I noticed right away that they were using a different ring than usual(SICW's ring, in fact) as it was clearly smaller than their usual one. Unfortunately, they had another rope mishap(on top of the one at SICW's show last month)...leading to an extended intermission to get it fixed.
The talent roster has undergone some changes...I don't know the exact situation with Brandon Espinosa and his crew but they haven't appeared at MMWA in a few months. Battle Royal Champion Dave Osborne is still there, at any rate...and the recent returns of Ken Kasa(Ian Storm) and Brian James have helped things a bit.
Apparently EVERY Mauler match has to end with a cowbell backfire...
Red Bastien was a bit before my time, sorry to say, though I did recognize his name...
September is shaping up to be a busy month for MMWA/SICW with the outdoor Hillsdale show, the usual two events, AND the Lemay show with the King Of St. Louis Cable Tournament. The tournament winner earns a guaranteed Heavyweight Title shot...persumably if Champion Gary Jackson wins, he gets to hand-pick his next opponent(as clarified before last year's tourney).
Sounds like Johnny Courageous was working hurt last Saturday and may have gotten banged up even more in his match with Max Archer...hope he's able to heal up soon. That explains why he wasn't in the battle royal at the end of the night...the battle royal included just about everybody on the card except Courageous and Jackson(who did guest commentary).
Tony Raze worked face against Osborne...interesting change of pace. Hey, maybe the toy nightsticks will sell better. :)
Good push for James...Gary talked him up after the match with Dave Vaughn, then James got two significant eliminations(Vaughn and Kasa) before being the last guy thrown to the floor by Osborne.
In other local news, I had heard from a few different people that Independent Hardcore Wrestling is done...unfortunate news as they had a good run for a while there.
Tonight is SICW in East Carondelet with Ricky Cruz defending the Classic Title against Ken Kasa plus Chris Hargas vs. Ron Powers...nothing next weekend, I don't think, but September will be very busy.
