Let's begin, shall we?
A few months ago, CSCW started pushing its formation pretty heavily on the internets. It seemed like they had advertised quite a bit...unfortunately the attendance number didn't reflect that as the turnout wasn't that great.
The talent lineup went through a few changes prior to the show...Eric Allen was injured but other previously-advertised names(Jordan McEntyre, Buddy Roberts Jr., Marcello Spade) didn't appear either.
Dark/Silent Kunai had the sunglasses-over-mask motif made popular by Super Calo...one of my colleagues questioned the legality of shades in a match and I noted that Mr. Hughes did okay with it. The match with Evan Money was a decent opener.
Since I was sitting close to the ring, I booed Shane Fury as he came out and he responded with a scathing indictment of the Wayne's World movie. I'll have him know that those were CINEMATIC MASTERPIECES, thank you very much. Fun contest with Chris Logan...Fury won with that most feared of lucha finishers: El Cheapo De Rollup.
Byron Wilcott was briefly with WWE's developmental group FCW and had a couple of TV matches(both under his real name and as Lennox McEnroe). The guy carried himself like a star and was a very good talker...WWE may have missed the boat on him.
Liked the matchup between Wilcott's cousin Jerome Daniels and Andy Dalton...apparently they both wrestle in Texas. The pre-match mic work from Wilcott and Daniels established that Daniels would rely heavily on the ARMBAR...he kept building up to the ARMBAR to the point where the fans would call out "ARMBAR!" in later matches on the card. Well done. Gregory James stopped Wilcott from interfering, pushing their matchup later in the show...good show there.
I had seen Symon Phoenix's name on wrestling shows in the past but I had personally never seen him in the ring. It had been quite a while since I'd seen Rick Ruby as he's mostly worked for RCW. Those who know me can vouch for the fact that I'm as diplomatic as possible...but this match wasn't very good. Nope. Maybe there was ring rust or something, I don't know...
Hadn't seen John Epperson before but I know Jimmy D from MMWA and SICW. This was more of a brawl than a wrestling match and it ended with a DQ as Jimmy D hit Epperson with his baseball bat. It looked like they were doing a restart, but the referee just stopped counting out D as he walked away from the match...
Hadn't seen Justa Mazing before, but he showed impressive athleticism. Spade seemed to be getting the big heel push for the show as he was aligned with manager Garrett Williams. Managers in indy wrestling are a tricky prospect, especially if the manager is bigger than the wrestler he's representing.
The tournament semifinal matches were fairly short. Though Spade-Phoenix was decent for what it was, though the finishing spot may not have come off as well as they'd liked. The quick flash pin in Money-Fury could be explained as Fury "taking a dive" since he and Money were secretly aligned under Garrett Williams' management.
Some finish coordination is a good idea for wrestling shows...I saw two matches end with the small package and two matches end with the rollup-with-tights.
Had only seen Gregory James one other time...he worked a St. Louis Anarchy show about a year ago as teamed with Jordan Lacey agaisnt the Kentucky Buffet(Matt Cage & Alex Castle). Apparently the guy nicknamed "Too Much Metal" hails from Detroit Rock City...wonder if he knows Ryan Ash?
The NWA's status has been hotly debated as of late...many groups have dropped their affiliation with the organization, including Metro Pro in the Kansas City area and Anarchy Wrestling in Georgia. The big belt was vacated after the best-of-seven series between Adam Pearce and Colt Cabana, then Kahagas won it in an eight-way dance several months ago...he recently dropped it to former WWE wrestler Rob Conway.
The main event was Evan Money vs. Deven Spade in the tournament final...they didn't seem to click for whatever reason. A lot of the match and aftermath centered around former wrestler(and current promoter) Shane Somers as special guest referee...I'll leave it at that. It must have sucked for the fans who bought Evan Money merchandise to see him turn heel at the end
of the show...I think he was the only wrestler with merch for sale.
Anywho...onward to a very busy April:
Friday 4/5: Dynamo
Saturday 4/6: MMWA at South Broadway
Saturday 4/13: SICW in East Carondelet
Friday 4/19: SLA
Saturday 4/20: SICW in Fairmont City
Saturday 4/27: MECW
CSCW has a show on Jerseyville on the 27th as well.
