Decent turnout for MECW, as usual...crowd enthusiasm is rarely a problem in Wood River.
It was an oddball show in the sense that it didn't feature ANY "outside" guys...just local wrestlers. Not on the card were Independent Champion Tony Kozina, Great Plains Champion Evan Money, and Tag Team Champion Chris Logan. It was a busy weekend in the area with shows from WLW(Mark Sterling), Pro Wrestling Collision(Brandon Espinosa/Ace Hawkins/Chase King), and CSCW(Evan Money). The show had five matches but no one worked twice.
I'm not too clear on Eric Allen's exact situation, sorry to say...I think he had previous injury issues but the Elgin incident officially put him on the shelf. Just walking and getting in and out of the ring looked like it was tough for him...best of luck to him and I hope he's able to recover down the line.
The opener was between two masked newcomers...the Super Castaldi family continues to spread its influence. The Castaldis have apparently migrated around the globe as Castaldi XIII was announced as hailing from Japan(as opposed to the great wrestling town of Encinada, Mexico). Fine matchup for what it was.
Not sure if the McDarby/Santel stable is expanding, but McDarby seemed to have some connection to The Big Texan. It had been a while since I'd seen Shaft in the ring...the match was decent enough.
Shawn Santel's had previous neck issues and hadn't wrestled in a few months as a result...he's a solid worker so it's good to see him in the ring. I cringe when he takes DDT bumps or anything like that...
Sarin Sinn has turned face...it may take a while for me to get used to that, but the fans in attendance in Wood River seemed okay with it. He was wearing one of his old Gabriel Brimstone outfits(sans mask, of course). Solid bout with Sinn getting the upset win off a small package reversal...was surprised that the heels left quietly instead of dishing out post-match retribution.
Sinn: "Sorry about beating you up and stealing your company for a year."
Mr. K: "No worries."
Brandon Gallagher got "Katy Perry" chants because of his blue hair...this must become a thing. :-D Billy didn't have much ceiling clearance for a top-rope move so he did a standard top-rope splash(a la Rey Misterio Jr.) for the win. McNeil had a full evening as he wrestled at the CSCW show in Jerseyville before his match at MECW.
It was around this time that I noted the heavy Dynamo influence on the show...heh. Nothing wrong with that...it can be a tricky situation when a lot of your wrestlers have to travel to the show. MECW had a show last year where a busy weekend combined with assorted transportation issues for a particularly short-handed show.
Shorty's always entertaining in the ring...I often call him one of the most underrated wrestlers in the Midwest. Plenty of interference in this one...and it led to McDarby finally capturing the MECW Heavyweight Title after having been with the promotion since the beginning.
McDarby claimed to have paid off Michael Elgin to injure Allen...wonder if we'll see Elgin in MECW again in the near future? For now, the next show(date TBA) is set up as McDarby defending against Sinn.
That wraps up a busy month of April...six shows from five different companies. May looks to be a bit lighter, partially because Dynamo cancelled. As it stands, there's nothing local next weekend...the weekend after that is SICW at Argosy and MMWA at South Broadway. SICW is back in East Carondelet on the 18th and I don't know if anyone local is running on the 25th.
As always, thanks to the people who put up with my endless chatter at the shows: Drew, Gary, Brian Kelley and Dubray from Missouri Wrestling Revival, Evil Jim and Crystal, Dingo, Steven Kennedy, and everyone else I've encountered in the past month or so. See ya at the shows!
