Busy weekend with a lot to cover...
For the second year in a row, MMWA's Hillsdale show drew a good crowd of kids from the neighborhood...sounds like it will remain a regular thing.
Espy had a very busy day as he worked the afternoon show and also had two matches at MECW that night. Ace Hawkins and Dave Osborne also worked both shows, plus several guys from the afternoon show worked the SICW show in Columbia that night.
Liking Archer's heel work. Thought he got up a bit quickly after King's piledriver.
With Harley Race in town for an appearance at the Columbia show, it was cool to see some of the WLW crew on the Hillsdale show.
I already covered the injury situation with Super Castaldi...I did get an update and thankfully he wasn't as seriously injured as initially thought. That's a good thing...after that accidental head drop, he was not moving much at all. Saw his hands move a bit but not his legs...anything with the neck is a scary situation, as many will attest(including Keith Smith whose regular career was ended by neck problems).
Personally, I would have called an audible at that point and had Jackson go over Texan decisively to end the show on a positive note...but that was just my knee-jerk thought at the time.
Onward to MECW...the lineup was shuffled a bit in the past month. At the previous show, they seemed to set up a Santel-Mike Anthony rematch for this month as well as Eric Allen vs. Barry Ryte. However, the event posters came out and advertised Santel vs. Count Kharfu instead, along with McDarby vs. Mizfitt. At the show, Sinn said he put Anthony into "anger management" counseling to explain his absence...Ryte's absence wasn't really explained and the other two singles matches were turned into a six-man tag. Also, Sinn wrestled twice for no real reason.
Would be interested in seeing a full-length Mannix-Espinosa matchup...the one last night was basically a setup for the tag match. Meanwhile, Ace Hawkins went from face to heel back to face over the course of a single show...I have enough trouble keeping his and Espy's face/heel alignments straight across the promotions they work.
Lately Sinn has been carrying around an oversized check and offering to "buy" MECW from Mr. K...obviously, Mr. K has been refusing. I suspect this will lead to something or other...
A couple of confusing actions in the show...why did Mannix attack Hawkins? Mr. K had instituted a no-contact rule for Mannix and Allen, which is notable because Allen would have violated that rule if he had successfully struck Mannix during the opener against Espy. The best explanation I could fathom was that Mannix was planning to challenge Allen to put his belt on the line at the end of the show, thus he had to ensure that Allen retained his title.
Also, I can only assume that the no-contact rule ended after the two agreed to the match at the end of the show...when Mannix pulled Allen into the Mannix Depression, Mr. K just basically shrugged and said "the match is set".
I cringe a bit when Santel does anything that puts his neck at risk, including the swandive headbutt he's been using lately. That hanging backcracker looked nasty.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention Mizfitt's valet Miranda who plays her heel role very well. Not a whole lot of valets in wrestling any more who "get" that aspect of things. She's also easy on the eyes and redheads are one of my 746 weaknesses...ahem.
Buddy Roberts Jr. earned a future Tag Team Title shot, but Evan Money will be on the shelf for several months after a major car wreck recently. Best of luck to him for a speedy recovery...wonder what IHW will do about the status of the Illinois Title held by Money.
Anywho...onward to October. 10/1 is IHW in Red Bud. The following weekend is a potential tripleheader with Dynamo on Friday the 7th, MMWA at South Broadway on Saturday the 8th, and STL Anarchy on Sunday the 9th.
