Attendance seemed to be down a bit again...don't know what factors contributed to that. Saw a few people that I recognized from local comedy shows who also follow wrestling...I recommend to any wrestling fan to check out an independent show just for the perspective of it all.
The main angle pushed on the show was the brewing issue between Heavyweight Champion Gary Jackson and T.V. Champion Brandon Espinosa. Espy has been challenging Jackson, but Gary had been absent from recent shows. Espinosa has been racking up a string of impressive victories over nationally-known competitors and has several belts to his current credit, so he wants to add the MMWA Heavyweight Title to that list. The match has finally been set for the next South Broadway show.
Also on the agenda is MMWA's upcoming debut in Lemay on October 29th...that show will feature not only the King Of St. Louis Cable Tournament with the winner earning a guaranteed Heavyweight Title shot, but also former TNA Women's Champion Madison Rayne appearing and competing against Stacey O'Brian. Also on the card, Tony Raze & The Big Texan defend the Tag Team Titles against the former champions, Lumberjacks Abe & Gabe.
The tournament brackets have been announced: Jackson vs. Ace Hawkins, Espy vs. Dave Osborne, Johnny Courageous vs. Phil E. Blunt, and Dave Vaughn vs. Sean Vincent. It was said that if the Heavyweight Champion wins the tournament, he gets his choice of a championship opponent at the following show. The brackets seem to be set up for a possible Jackson-Espinosa semifinal and each quarterfinal has a current singles champion.
Max Archer is now working heel on both sides of the river...I've liked his heel work better, personally.
Odd logic for LMC to get a second match against a different opponent right after his initial matchup with Osborne(which ended in a double countout). He did have intermission to rest, though it was still two matches in a row for him. Don't know how it makes Raze look that he lost clean to a guy who just went through a tough match.
Felt a bit bad that the big Jackson-Espinosa confrontation was slightly upstaged by a small mouse that was seen running along the edge of the ring apron...a few people close to the ring spotted it and one of the ringside workers got it out of there. Still, the show more or less peaked with that staredown and the setup for next month's matchup.
The final match of the night didn't go over well with the live crowd since, as I said, the show peaked with the previous matchup and post-match. On top of that, it was face vs. face AND went to a twenty-minute draw, satisfying no one. It was between two champions(Battle Royal Champion Vaughn and Jr. Heavyweight Champion Courageous), so what were they fighting for? Nothing wrong with the match technically, I suppose...but it was another case of odd match placement at an MMWA/SICW show.
Anywho, next week is SICW in East Carondelet with Ron Powers defending the Classic Title against Chris Hargas. The week after that, MMWA runs in Hillsdale for their now-annual back-to-school matinee event...that evening, SICW has a show in Columbia, IL while MECW runs in Wood River.
