MECW Special Comment

My year in local wrestling began on a busy weekend...AAPW had one of their biggest shows ever in Marion with Colt Cabana and El Generico on the card, plus SICW opened their 2012 in East Carondelet. The dog collar match was the only match announcement ahead of time...well, that and Justin Reno defending his Heavyweight Title against a mystery opponent.

No Mizfitt Manners or Myranda in the house, so Sinn Enterprises were a bit shorthanded for the night...

No, I hadn't made the connection between Gabriel Brimstone's exit from wrestling and Sarin Sinn's rise in MECW. I immediately joked that a) he should put the mask back on and b) now we know why Brimstone never talked. :) SWERVE~! since Sinn had originally said on Facebook that he wouldn't be at the show.

Eric Allen's retirement only lasted a few months...yeah, I know how those go in wrestling.

This was a very strong show in terms of in-ring action...can't think of too many low spots on the card. It looks like Shorty is becoming a regular there, which is cool with me.

Ace Hawkins came out slapping hands...then did a heel promo saying he had just used the restroom and didn't wash his hands. Har har. Fine matchup with Dave Osborne...Dave has quietly become a solid competitor(he just finished up his own rookie year).

The dog collar match was about as violent as you could get without any blood...the two traded sick chairshots to the head that made everyone cringe and would have infuriated a Torch columnist. Was especially concerned for Shawn Santel since he had neck problems in the past that forced him to step away from wrestling for a while. While Count Kharfu technically won the match decisively(the referee was down when Santel had him covered, then Kharfu hit his own finisher and had him pinned), it was Ace Hawkins counting the fall and Sinn simply put his stamp of approval on that "decision". Another joke on my part: "There's another title change Crimefighter won't recognize." :)

Sinn Enterprises had all the gold...until Sinn decided to reactivate the Great Plains Title(it had been unified with the Heavyweight Title in the Bailey Mannix-Eric Allen Ironman Match). Fine matchup between Mauler McDarby and Brandon Espinosa...McDarby got the clean win for, amazingly, his first singles title EVER. Cool for him...I remember his earliest matches from South Broadway and he's slimmed down quite a bit since those days. The guy deserves a lot of credit for his hard work...

The Tag Title match was the only real low point of the night and it wasn't even that bad. It was tough to buy Joey as the face in peril, I guess...but the champs were retaining and Seals was the one to take the fall in that situation. Guess it averted one of my pet peeves in recent months(a guy getting a hot tag and cleaning house, then quickly tagging his tired and battered partner back into the match).

The audience was psyched for the whole night(Monster Energy~!), even for the main event with a heel referee. My main question for the rematch at the next show is simple...what's keeping Sinn from naming himself as the ref for THAT encounter?

As I said, busy weekend on the indy scene...the St. Louis Anarchy scene was affected by ACW's show on Sunday as several belts changed hands. Davey Vega won the T.V. Title from Scot Summers in a four-way dance that also included Jerry Lynn and Mat Fitchett. Also, Angel Blue captured the Joshi Title from Athena, Matthew Palmer beat Masada for the Hardcore Title, and J.C. Bravo regained the U-30 Title from Chingo Del Santo. After all those title changes, A.C.H. still managed to hang onto his belt against Gary Jay.

Next weekend is South Broadway...can't think of anyone running in the last weekend of January. Light month, which is fine by my budget...
